Het Nederlandse jacht van Jeff Bezos is weer eens in het water gespot. Zeiljacht Koru kostte de Amazon-oprichter 500 miljoen euro, maar daarmee houden de kosten natuurlijk niet op. Dit betaalt hij ongeveer per jaar om het schip van Oceano drijvende te houden.

Op het moment van schrijven hijgt Jeff Bezos zijn rijke rivaal Elon Musk in de nek in de strijd om rijkste persoon op aarde. De tussenstand is op dit moment (26 juni, 2024) nog 210 miljard dollar voor Musk tegenover 209 miljard voor Bezos. Kwestie van tijd dat het stuivertje gewisseld wordt. Maar bezuinigen op speelgoed zit er niet in.

Je las al eerder over het Nederlandse jacht van Jeff Bezos, waarvoor een Rotterdamse brug moest worden ontmanteld , wat uiteindelijk niet gebeurde. Maar het is opgelost en sinds enige tijd wordt de miljardair af en toe op het water gespot met zijn vriendin Lauren Sanchez.

Uiteraard beschikt het 75 meter lange jacht over alle luxe, pracht en praal. Een zwembad, verschillende terrassen, sportruimtes, er is geen nee te koop. Maar de meest bijzonder feature is de Abeona. Dat is een ondersteuningsschip van 75 miljoen euro, met onder meer slaapplekken voor personeel of extra gasten en een helikopterplatform.

Wat kost het om een jacht van 500 miljoen te bezitten?

Leuk en aardig, zo’n superjacht van 500 miljoen euro. Maar wat kost het om het Nederlandse jacht drijvende te houden?

Personeel en standaardkosten

Volgens The New York Post heeft de Koru een bemanning van maximaal 36 mensen. Daarmee houdt het niet op. Ondersteuningsschip Abeona heeft tot 45 bemanningsleden en ondersteunend personeel nodig. Vakpersoneel, of het nou een kapitein of kelner is, dat daarvoor ook goed wordt betaald. De personeelskosten en andere standaardkosten om het schip draaiende te houden zijn volgens Daily Mail samen een dikke 23 miljoen euro per jaar.

Haventarief

In november 2023 arriveerde het Nederlandse jacht van Jeff Bezos in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Het was echter te groot om in de haven te passen met alle andere superjachten. Daarom moest het aangemeerd worden bij cruiseschepen in Port Everglades, tegen een tarief van omgerekend 15.460 euro per week. Hoeveel weken in het jaar het schip op een dergelijke plek ligt aangemeerd, is niet bekend.

Dat je een fiets niet goed onderhoudt is al zonde, maar een superjacht van 500 miljoen euro laat je al helemaal niet aan zijn lot over. Volgens de website Superyacht Fan kost het onderhoud van Koru tussen de 5 miljoen en 10 miljoen euro per jaar.

Diesel tanken

Dan moet er af en toe ook nog diesel getankt worden, want er wordt niet alleen maar gezeild. Wat het Jeff Bezos kost om Koru vol te tanken, is niet bekend. Wel weten we dankzij deze theoretische berekening hoeveel een volle tank van Dilbar kost, een superjacht van 600 miljoen euro. Gaat al snel richting de 1 miljoen euro, al komt het in theorie natuurlijk nooit voor dat een tank helemaal leeg is.

Het door het Nederlandse Oceanco gebouwde zeilschip waarvoor Jeff Bezos naar verluidt $500 miljoen betaalde, heeft haar eerste nautische mijlen gemaakt. En uiteraard cirkelden de botenspotters daar met hun camera’s omheen.

Zelden is er meer commotie geweest rond een in ons land gebouwd zeilschip, dan om het nieuwe varende speeltje van Jeff Bezos. Het gigantische ding paste namelijk niet onder een monumentale Rotterdamse brug. Die moest daar dus maar even voor wijken, zo was de aanvankelijke gedachte . Een gedachte die al snel overboord werd gezet, door te besluiten de drie masten pas later op de romp te plaatsen. Daar werd het project wel iets duurder van, maar ach, goedkoop is het project toch al nooit geweest. En weliswaar is Bezos niet langer de rijkste man op aarde, op de kleintjes hoeft hij nog altijd niet te letten .

Enfin, afgelopen week maakte het 127 meter lange schip, dat Bezos Koru zal dopen, op de Noordzee haar eerste proefvaart. Daarbij werden nog niet de zeilen gehesen, maar uit de beelden die Superyacht Times maakte valt al wel te concluderen dat het echt een plaatje is.

De Koru, een naam waarvoor Bezos inspiratie opdeed bij de Maori , is het langste schip dat ooit in Nederland werd gebouwd, en het op één na langste schip ter wereld dat zich door de wind kan laten voortstuwen. Ook het hulpschip, waarop bijvoorbeeld zijn helikopter kan landen, werd in Nederland besteld. Beelden daarvan hieronder.

Sailing yacht KORU: What we know so far about Jeff Bezos’ 127 meter yacht

Recent footage showcasing the vast proportions of the Amazon founder’s new 127m (417ft) Oceanco sailing yacht KORU , known throughout her build as Project Y721, has provided some valuable insight into one of the yachting industry’s best-kept secrets.

The megayacht’s specifications and amenities had been kept completely under wraps until she was forced to move from the Dutch yard’s primary facilities in Alblasserdam to get her masts fitted elsewhere in order to avoid dismantling the Koningshaven Bridge after huge public backlash. 

In August, the yacht was spotted in the Port of Rotterdam after her trio of masts had been successfully stepped, with pictures barely doing justice to the monolithic proportions of the sailing spars, reportedly up to 70-80 meters tall.

World yacht rankings

KORU will replace Oceanco’s BLACK PEARL for second place in the world's largest sailing yacht rankings behind Nobiskrug's 143m (469ft) sailing yacht A .

Oceanco's newest yacht is understood to have an internal volume of 3,300 GT and will undoubtedly offer a wealth of luxurious accommodation and amenities. Although we have scant information about the yacht's features, we do know that she will have an aft dip pool along with a further Jacuzzi on her sundeck and variety of alfresco social spaces. She also has a crow's nest attached to her central mast, offering lofty panoramic views for her more adventurous guests.

From the pictures we can see KORU also benefits from full-length windows across her superstructure allowing plenty of light to infuse her interiors. 

Design inspiration

Built with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure with teak decking, she reportedly takes her design cues from the 93-meter Lürssen sailing yacht EOS , perhaps inspired by the entrepreneur’s visits to this yacht in previous years. 

Showcasing a midnight-blue hull with a distinctive red stripe running along her waterline, KORU’s exterior styling mirrors this traditional schooner style, with an elongated bowsprite and canoe stern. Another similar style yacht is the 90m (295ft) Royal Huisman sailing yacht ATHENA . 

Kinetic energy technology

As expected from a tech entrepreneur, known for pushing boundaries and driving innovation, sailing yacht KORU will be trialing a prototype for a new kinetic energy recovery system. This is based on a conversion of wave induced motion, heave, pitch and roll into electric energy, with initial tests showing early promise. 

With a nod to her green credentials, this will provide an additional power source for the yacht allowing for more sustainable cruising.

Tenders and toys

Access to sailing yacht KORU will be via folding passerelles, discreetly hidden in the yacht's hull on either side. Rescue and work tender launches will likely take place further forward, as per regulations. Recent pictures show a large hatch opening in her lower deck aft, which may contain further tenders and toys, but may also double as a beach club. 

Sailing yacht KORU comes complete with a support vessel built by Damen Yachts, reportedly known as 75 meter (247ft) yacht WINGMAN .

Once delivered, it is understood that she will act as an official support boat for the sailing yacht , carrying the larger toys, including a submarine for thrilling excursions beneath the waves, plus a helicopter and landing pad. She is also believed to play host to an array of PWCs, with rumors of a speed boat and luxury car adding to the fleet, as well as providing accommodation for additional crew and staff.

When is sailing yacht KORU expected to be delivered?

From here she will undertake the all-important rounds of sea trials before being delivered to her owner sometime in the new year. It is understood that the yacht will be officially christened KORU upon delivery, and will operate under the Cayman Islands' flag. It is not believed that superyacht KORU will be available to charter.

Bezos ran into some trouble earlier this year when it came out that the Koningshaven Bridge in the Netherlands might have to be dismantled to let Y721 Koru pass through, as the megayacht’s 229-foot masts exceeded the bridge’s 131-foot clearance. City officials briefly agreed to disassemble the bridge but then decided against it in the face of public backlash, according to The New York Times. That negative reaction included a threat from residents to show up and pelt rotten eggs at the $500 million behemoth.

Oceanco, the company that built Y721 Koru, ultimately decided against applying for the permit that would be required for dismantling Koningshaven Bridge, and the boat was instead quietly towed to another shipyard without its mast.

Bezos’s completed yacht will be accompanied by a 246-foot-long “shadow yacht” called YS7512, Damen Yacht’s largest-ever support vessel. It will fit 45 people onboard, feature a helicopter hangar and storage for Jet Skis and other water toys and is reportedly called Abeona , according to Boat International .

In 2022, the 125.8-metre sailing yacht Koru made history when she hit the water at Oceanco ’s Alblasserdam facilities. Now successfully delivered, she is the flagship of the Oceanco fleet and the largest Dutch-built yacht in the world.

Koru unable to dock in Florida

Koru arrived at Port Everglades, Florida in November 2023 following a months-long Mediterranean cruise that included stopovers in Dubrovnik, Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer and Calabria (according to BOATPro ). The sailing yacht was too large to anchor in the nearby marina, which has a maximum capacity of 121.9 metres. She was photographed instead docking next to a 297-metre cruise ship named Rhapsody of the Seas .

Last summer, Koru was spotted in the French Riveria alongside her 75-metre support vessel Abeona . Delivered by Damen Yachting two months before the mothership, Abeona is equipped with a helipad and hangar for a D14 value helicopter– which is clearly being put to good use. Accommodation is for up to 45 people onboard Bezos' support vessel, including crew, guests and other specialist staff.

Koru and Abeona also travelled to Portofino in the summer of 2023, with both Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez sighted enjoying lunch and taking photographs while on board.

Throughout construction, it was difficult to get a glimpse of the details on board Koru ; but once handed over, all of her traditional features could be admired up close. As well as the intricate gold paintwork and scarlet bootstripe, the yacht also features an elaborate figurehead made of polished wood. The woman is wearing a necklace with a symbol in the pendant, which some have speculated could be the Māori symbol meaning "koru".

After delivery, the schooner spent some time enjoying the waters of Mallorca. The Balearic hotspot is a magnet for superyachts during the Mediterranean season, but Koru had the quiet anchorage largely to herself after leaving the Oceanco shipyard. Her classic lines could be appreciated in all of their glory against the backdrop of Palma Cathedral.

In April 2023. Koru was delivered and undertook her maiden voyage from the Netherlands to Gibraltar. She then headed onwards to Palma, giving the world a first glimpse of her cascading aft decks, mighty masts and elaborate aft deck pool arrangement. She was flying solo in Mallorca, but was later joined by support vessel Abeona .

Following her successful sea trials in Rotterdam, Koru embarked on journey to Palma, Mallorca that involved an overnight anchorage in Gibraltar. The sailing yacht was sighted passing through the Strait of Gibraltar a second time on her cross-continental journey from the Mediterranean to the USA in November 2023.

Koru was spotted departing from Rotterdam in the early morning light of February 13 to begin sea trials. The 125.8-metre Oceanco set sail across the North Sea to put her performance to the test after hitting the water for the first time in August 2022. The traditional three-masted schooner yacht has a midnight blue hull, traditional canoe stern and the unique addition of a chair at the very tip of the bowsprit. Her name represents the idea of life’s perpetual movement and is a Māori word closely related to that of an unfurling leaf.

The yacht was seen for the first time in her final form on the dock in the Port of Rotterdam. Her trio of masts was stepped here to avoid having to dismantle any bridges to allow the Oceanco giant yacht to pass under. The maximum height of the bridge is 70 metres; the masts on Koru are thought to measure between 65 and 85 metres. The first images of Koru indicate the yacht will have plenty of features for her owner to enjoy, including an aft deck pool and a large, uncluttered sundeck.

The 125.8-metre yacht was moved from Oceanco’s primary facilities at the crack of dawn to enter the final stages of construction. The hull was transported via Dordrecht and Spijkenisse (Oude Maas), and her masts were transported separately via the slightly shorter Rotterdam Centre (Nieuwe Maas).

Before she hit the water, the hull of Koru was loaded onto a transport vessel and she made the journey through the Dutch canals for further construction work. The yacht was captured against the backdrop of the quaint Dutch countryside, revealing her classic-looking lines and long rows of windows.

As she was wheeled out of the shed into the light of day, yacht-spotters were able to get their first proper aerial shot of the yacht, without her masts.

When Oceanco completed the work on the hull, the yacht was rolled out of the shed to reveal a crisp navy hull and white superstructure. Koru ’s exterior design immediately drew a comparison to Lürssen’s 93-metre sailing yacht Eos , which was designed by US-based Langan Design . This was the world’s first sighting of the already iconic superyacht.

KORU is a three-masted sailing yacht, 127 meters (417 ft) in length. The superyacht is reported to have cost around $500 million, making it one of the most expensive yachts in the world. ’s Werelds rijkste man ter wereld – Amazon oprichter Jeff Bezos – heeft een nieuwe superjacht aan zijn collectie toegevoegd. Klinkt niet heel verrassend, maar toch is het voor ons Nederlanders iets bijzonders. Hij heeft het superjacht namelijk bestelt bij de Nederlandse superjachtbouwer Oceanco. Wij nemen maar al te graag een kijkje.

Nederlands superjacht voor Jeff Bezos

Volgens het Amerikaanse zakenblad Bloomberg mag de superjachtbouwer uit het Zuid-Hollandse Alblasserdam een 127-meter lange driemaster bouwen met meerdere dekken – een superjacht dus. Details over het uiterlijk van Bezos’ nieuwe paradepaardje worden niet gegeven, maar Bloomberg stelt dat de creatie “één van de mooiste zeiljachten gaat worden die er bestaan”. Dat het een Nederlands tintje heeft, is helemaal mooi meegenomen.

Naast het megajacht heeft Bezos Oceanco naar verluidt ook ingeschakeld voor een tweede, kleiner ‘ondersteuningsjacht’ met een eigen helikopterplatform. Dat zou de oprichter van Amazon nodig hebben voor zijn nieuwe vriendin – Lauren Sanchez – die helikopterpiloot is. Bezos zelf heeft ook vlieglessen genomen, om zijn peperdure helikopters voortaan zelf te kunnen besturen.

Er werd aan Oceanco gevraagd naar de aankoop, maar om privacy redenen willen zij hier niks over kwijt. “Oceanco hecht veel waarde aan de privacy en vertrouwelijkheid van al onze (potentiële) klanten en geeft daarom geen commentaar op onze al dan niet betrokkenheid bij specifieke projecten”, luidt hun verklaring.

Een superjacht kost ongeveer €1 miljoen per strekkende meter, dus zal de multimiljardair flink wat poen moeten neertellen. Met een vermogen van dik €165 miljard zal hij de aankoop echter niet in zijn portemonnee gaan voelen. Wanneer het schip moet worden opgeleverd, is niet duidelijk. Binnenkort zal de Amazon-topman wel meer tijd hebben om eropuit te trekken met zijn superjacht, aangezien hij van plan is om zijn functie van CEO neer te leggen tijdens het derde kwartaal van dit jaar. Naar verluid wil Bezos uitvoerend voorzitter te worden.

The superyacht accidents continue – In the middle of the day, a brand new $20 million vessel collided with the dock in St. Tropez and suffered minor structural damage. The 112-foot vessel was coming into berth when it hit a pontoon.

'Jeff Bezos bouwt 's werelds grootste zeiljacht in Nederland'

Het geheimzinnige jacht van 127 meter lengte dat momenteel bij Oceanco in Alblasserdam gebouwd wordt is voor 's werelds rijkste man, Jeff Bezos. Dat beweert althans Brad Stone, de schrijver van Amazon Unbound, een boek dat over Bezos en zijn bedrijf Amazon gaat.

Project Y721, dat momenteel in aanbouw is bij Oceanco in Alblasserdam, op het punt waar de rivier de Noord en de A15 elkaar kruisen, is met geheimzinnigheid omhuld. Hoewel super- en megajachten normaal gesproken al met stijf gesloten kaken te maken hebben, is in dit geval de stilte nog doordringender. Oceanco vertelt helemaal niets over het project.

Het enige dat bekend is over het nieuwe superjacht is dat het een zeilschip wordt van 127 meter. Dankzij die lengte wordt het meteen het grootste megazeiljacht ter wereld. De Black Pearl , eveneens gebouwd bij Oceanco, verplaatst naar de tweede plek op de ranglijst van wie heeft de langste.

In het boek Amazon Unbound zegt de auteur dat het jacht gebouwd wordt voor Jeff Bezos. De overige details die naar voren komen zijn dat het " one of the finest sailing yachts in existence, [wordt]" met " several decks" en " three enormous masts ". In tegenstelling tot de Black Pearl wordt de Y721 een schoener.

Volgens de schrijver is intussen ook een ' support ship ' voor het jacht in aanbouw. Of dat jacht dan ook bij Oceanco wordt gebouwd is niet meteen duidelijk.

Met een prijskaartje van een half miljard euro en een lengte van 127 meter..

Jeff Bezos’ 127 meter lange superzeiljacht, de Y721, zal één van de grootste ooit worden. Kosten? Richten een half miljard euro en er is nogal wat ophef over. Zeg maar een lichte rebellie in 010.

Je zult het vast hebben gelezen of hebben gezien op het nieuws. De Koningshavenbrug in Rotterdam moet namelijk worden ontmanteld om Oceanco’s gevaarte door te laten. Het middengedeelte van de brug, bij de lokale bevolking bekend als De Hef, zou tijdelijk moeten worden verwijderd om plaats te bieden aan de recordbrekende bouw.

Slechts bewaarde geheim

Het Oceanco-zeiljacht van 127 meter is naar verluidt in opdracht van Amazon-oprichter Jeff Bezos gebouwd (één van de slechtst bewaarde geheimen) en zal bij oplevering later dit jaar één van ’s werelds grootste zeiljachten worden.

Maar eerst iets meer over de ophef voordat we wat laten zien van de Y721. De andere foto’s hierboven- en onder geven een namelijk slechts een indruk van de Y721, maar zijn van Oceanco’s creaties de Black Pearl met ‘slechts’ een lengte van 106,7 meter.

De Koningshavenbrug heeft in 2017 een grootschalig restauratieproject ondergaan en is daarmee een punt van controverse in de gemeente. Oceanco heeft naar verluidt de lokale overheid benaderd en verzocht om tijdelijke ontmanteling van de brug, aangezien de hoogte van 40 meter niet genoeg zou zijn om het drietal masten aan boord van de Y721 te huisvesten.

Het zou ‘niet praktisch’ zijn om het schip gedeeltelijk af te werken en elders te bouwen alsdus Oceanco, dus heeft de stad besloten om deze zomer het centrale deel van de brug tijdelijk uit elkaar te halen zodat het jacht van Bezos er doorheen kan. Erg spijtig volgens de Rotterdammers, want de gemeente had ‘beloofd’ om De Hef nooit meer te demonteren.

Rotterdamse politicus Stephan Leewis op Twitter: “Deze man (Bezos red.) heeft zijn geld verdiend door structureel te bezuinigen op personeel, belastingen te ontduiken, regelgeving te ontwijken en nu moeten we ons prachtige rijksmonument slopen? Dat gaat echt een brug te ver.”

Hulptroepen

Belangrijk om te vermelden is dat Oceanco, en niet de stad, de kosten van tijdelijke verwijdering betalen. Iets dat waarschijnlijk zal worden doorberekend aan Bezos, maar dat is een schijntje voor hem met een vermogen van zo’n 200 miljard euro.

Superjachten doen het overigens erg goed. Vorig jaar steeg het naar een recordniveau. In 2021 werden in totaal 887 van dergelijke schepen verkocht, een stijging van 77 procent ten opzichte van een jaar eerder en meer dan het dubbele van het aantal in 2019.

Die hoge koolstofvezelmasten zijn sowieso een ‘probleem’ voor Bezos. Hierdoor kan een helikopter niet veilig landen op de Y721, dus heeft hij maar een ‘hulpschip’ laten bouwen waarop dat wel kan. Het ondersteuningsschip brengt ‘m dan weer bij dit gevaarte dat je hieronder ziet tijdens een recent transport van het schip. Zonder mast.

De Y721 hierboven is het grootste jacht dat ooit op Nederlandse bodem is gebouwd. Het is de derde in een serie grootse zeiljachten van Oceanco. Na de Aquilo van 86 meter en de Black Pearl van 106.7 meter die je bovenaan zag. De zeilkoning blijft nog steeds Sailing Yacht A van Norbiskrug met een lengte van 142,81 meter.

Larry Ellison, the co-founder and chairman of software company Oracle Corporation, is the second- richest person in the world. According to CNBC, The Economic Times and other reports, the shares of Oracle surged by 20 per cent in September, propelling Ellison's personal wealth by $8.1 billion (approximately Rs 67,798 crore) to a total of $206 billion (approximately Rs 17,24,268 crore). The American businessman- entrepreneur surpassed Amazon founder Jeff Bezos , who has a net worth of $203 billion (approximately Rs 16,99,193 crore), to secure the second rank on the Forbes richest list.

According to CNBC , Oracle’s wealth jumped due to the software company's role in the artificial intelligence boom. Below, we take a look at Larry Ellison's early life, education, career achievements and more.

Early life and education Ellison was born on August 17, 1944, in New York City . After attending South Shore High School in Chicago, Larry Ellison enrolled in University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. However, he dropped out of medicine after his sophomore year due to the demise of his adoptive mother. In 1966, he studied physics and mathematics at the University of Chicago, where he was introduced to computer design. He then moved to Berkeley, California , where he began his career as a programmer.

After a short stint with Amdahl Corporation, Ellison joined Ampex Corporation, where he worked on a project for the CIA, named Oracle. In 1977, he went on to launch his own company with an investment of $2,000 (approximately Rs 1,67,408), named Software Development Laboratories (SDL), with two partners. A few years later, they renamed the company Relational Software Inc. In 1979, he rolled out a version of Oracle Database and changed the company to Oracle Systems Corporation.

When Oracle bought NetSuite for $9.3 billion (approximately Rs 77,844 crore), Ellison owned 35 per cent of the latter, which helped him add $3.5 billion (approximately Rs 29,296 crore) to his personal wealth. In 2018, Ellison joined Tesla's board of directors after acquiring 3 million shares. However, he left the Elon Musk -owned company in 2022. But he still owned 1.4 per cent shares of Tesla, along with 42.9 per cent shares of Oracle Corporation.

Besides running a successful software company, Larry Ellison has also been actively involved in sports, such as Tennis and Yachting. According to Business Insider , the Oracle founder owns a yacht-racing team. He also owns a 288-foot-long yacht named Musashi. He has also invested his wealth in aircrafts, owning two military jets — a Soviet MiG-29 and an Italian Air Force SIAI-Marchetti S.211. Ellison's vast real estate portfolio includes Lanai, an island in Hawaii, a luxurious property in Japan and an expensive home in Silicon Valley, according to the same report.

Billionaire jeff bezos races rocket lab and a chinese start-up to build the next spacex.

In December 2015, Elon Musk's SpaceX did something no other organization on Earth -- either government-run or corporate -- had ever managed to do before: Launch a rocket into orbit and then land it back on solid ground on Earth safely . Nearly a decade later, no other entity has yet managed to duplicate this feat, which is part of the reason it dominates the market for space launches today, and part of the reason SpaceX now has a market cap of more than $210 billion .

But at least three companies aim to try to repeat that achievement soon. The first one to succeed could become the next SpaceX.

Blue Origin

Blue Origin and SpaceX have been feuding since way back in November 2015, when Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos stole Musk's thunder by landing his New Shepard rocket back on Earth before Musk could land a Falcon 9.

Admittedly, the New Shepard is a suborbital rocket, and Musk had been busy trying to bring his rockets down for controlled landings on boats while Bezos was taking the easy road with touchdowns on land. Even so, Bezos found a way to get Musk's goat, and the feud between the two space billionaires has been continuous ever since.

Next month, Bezos will attempt to one-up Musk once more when Blue Origin launches its New Glenn rocket on its first-ever flight. New Glenn will carry a Blue Origin space tug (one of the few space vessel types SpaceX hasn't tried building yet) dubbed Blue Ring to orbit. It will also attempt to land its first stage on a ship at sea, duplicating a feat that only SpaceX has ever accomplished thus far.

If Bezos succeeds, it will mean Blue Origin possesses a more powerful reusable rocket than the Falcon 9. While SpaceX says the Falcon 9 can carry a payload of 22 tons to low Earth orbit, Blue Origin says the New Glenn's payload capacity is 45 tons.

After spending the last three years developing the successor to its Electron small rocket, publicly traded Rocket Lab USA (NASDAQ: RKLB) aims to debut its reusable Neutron rocket in a launch in mid-2025.

The Neutron features an innovative design in which the rocket's reusable first stage encloses an expendable second stage. After its fuel burn, the first stage releases the second stage and the payload, then closes back up in preparation for its own controlled landing (in what some are calling a "Hungry Hippo" design).

As such, Neutron will represent a quantum leap in Rocket Lab's capabilities. Whereas its Electron rocket's payload capacity maxes out at around 300 kilograms, Neutron will be able to launch payloads up to 13 metric tons. That's not quite in the same class as Falcon 9 or New Glenn, but it's plenty big enough to accommodate most standard satellites, and should also permit Rocket Lab to deploy entire constellations of small satellites for its customers in a single launch.

Rocket Lab, too, will aim to land its new rocket on a barge at sea.

And now for the wild card. Over in China, rocket tech start-up iSpace (not to be confused with Japan's ispace -- although I guarantee there's going to be confusion) announced last week that it had secured $99 million in new funding to further development of its own reusable rocket, the Hyperbola-3.

Smaller than the other two contenders, Hyperbola-3 is expected to have the capacity to boost an 8.5-ton payload into low Earth orbit. Like Falcon 9, New Glenn, and Neutron, it will favor sea landings to reduce the amount of fuel being carried, which will in turn enable it to carry close to its maximum payload.

iSpace aims to conduct its first Hyperbola-3 launch in December 2025, making it last in line among these would-be SpaceX copycats to make the attempt. It's also arguably the company with the worst outlook for success. Over seven launches to date of its Hyperbola-1 expendable rocket, Payload Research notes that iSpace has notched only four successes.

That's a batting average of .571 -- great for baseball, but significantly worse than Blue Origin's record with New Shepard, or Rocket Lab's with Electron.

What it all means to investors

But yes, I'm still saying "there's a chance" -- not just for iSpace, but for all three of these space companies to succeed. And if even one of them does, it will change the dynamics of competition in the space industry.

Rocket reusability, after all, was a key reason why SpaceX has been able to cut the costs of orbital launches, which forced competitors like United Launch Alliance and Arianespace to cut their prices as well. Once Blue Origin, Rocket Lab, or iSpace reaches that technological milestone, SpaceX might feel compelled to cut prices further to compete.

Further, it will add enormous pressure on United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Boeing  and Lockheed Martin , and on Arianespace parent Airbus , to finally design and build reusable rockets of their own.

In a contest between companies that throw away their rockets after each use and companies that save money by reusing them, it's fairly clear which ones will be able to offer the best prices to their space customers. And those that can't offer the best prices are probably destined for a turbulent future -- along with their investors.
