The best boat bars in NYC for water-top sips and snacks

All aboard! Make like the captain and gather your crew on NYC's best boat bars

Amber Sutherland-Namako

The only places that offer even better views than New York City’s best waterfront restaurants  are our water- top restaurants: yes, we're talking about those scenic boat bars and floating eateries that give off that breezy yachting lifestyle —but without the  high price and pesky barnacles that stow away on an actual watercraft. Mostly only open seasonally, they’re peak spring and summer destinations with the warm-weather menus to match, all with a side of real-deal seafaring. So ahoy! New York's best boat bars  will rise the tide for all your going-out plans this season.

RECOMMENDED: The 27 best outdoor bars in NYC

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

The best boat bars in NYC

1.  baylander steel beach.

Baylander Steel Beach

Funnily enough, this enormous West Harlem piers venue was previously the world’s smallest aircraft carrier. Choose from its long list shareables like  guacamole and chips, saucy chicken wings and firecracker calamari, and mains like lobster rolls, Cuban sandwiches and foot-long hot dogs , plus all manner of drinks. Time Out Tip: At Baylander, it’s not uncommon to overhear the phrase, “Excuse me, what is that drink in your hand?” More likely than not, they are talking about “That Patron Drink," a 24-ounce margarita filled with Patron reposado tequila, Patron citronge, fresh watermelon purée and lime juice.

2.  The Frying Pan

  • price 2 of 4

The Frying Pan

In 1929, this very structure was constructed as a lightship—like a light house with one obvious difference. It was stationed off the coast of North Carolina until 1965. It was eventually abandoned and even sank before it was raised once more and repurposed as the Frying Pan as we know it in 1989. Its 2024 menu includes all the expected boat bar bites and plenty of sips to pair them with.  Time Out Tip: Become the envy of the open seas and order a pitcher of the Spicy Watermelon Rita with 21 seeds cucumber jalapeño tequila, watermelon fresca and lime.

3.  Grand Banks

Grand Banks

Crew hospitality group’s original boat bar is a darling schooner, docked in Tribeca on the Hudson River. B eckoning guests with the cheery yellow and white over its long, U-shaped bar, the vessel offers oysters, seafood-focused entrees like lobster rolls and soft-shell crab, a $75 caviar service and fittingly nautical cocktails, as well as wine and beer.  Crew also runs other maritime-themed spots on land and sea elsewhere around town.   Time Out Tip: Drink like the skipper and order the Captains Courageous. Crafted with Aperol, pineapple and lemon, this whiskey-forward cocktail features a limited-edition, single barrel straight rye whiskey made in collaboration with  New York Distilling Co  and the venue itself.

4.  The Honorable William Wall

The Honorable William Wall

Although its technical address is in New Jersey, who is to say what truly lies where, once water whirls beneath? The Manhattan Yacht Club's "floating clubhouse" can be reached by rail, road and ferry, in any case. Seatings are timed and advance tickets are recommended, as the space's capacity is a firm 149. Guests are welcome to pack picnics, but drinks must be purchased on board.  Time Out Tip: Speaking of drinks, the offerings at the open-air bar are pretty straightforward with wells and beers served up in plastic cups. But to get into the spirit of the sailboat races in the waters down below, we recommend getting the Lucky Dog pilsner beer from the Manhattan Yacht Club.

5.  North River Lobster Company

  • Hell's Kitchen

North River Lobster Company

One of the area’s few boat bars that actually moves, North River is a crustacean cruise on the Hudson. First decide on a one or two-hour block, then choose from five types of lobster rolls — including the Insta-famous, 28-inch The Shelley sandwich — as many raw bar items, snacks derived from land and oodles of booze.

Time Out Tip: If you opted for the two-hour excursion, go big and order the 24-ounce Batten Down the Hatches with two types of rum, pineapple and citrus. Shotskis are available if you want to get #shipfaced with your crew.

6.  Pilot

  • Cocktail bars
  • Brooklyn Heights
  • 3 out of 5 stars
  • Recommended

Pilot

Docked near the southern end of Brooklyn Bridge Park, Pilot’s as romantic as postcards between sweethearts, impromptu slow dances and amicable prenups. The 147-foot, 1920s schooner looks out on the East River and lower Manhattan skyline, with a seafood-forward menu and color scheme that's similar to its sibling vessel, Grand Banks.    Time Out Tip:  If you are going for oysters (which you should be), go for a glass of bubbly or pair it with the Lil Shucker kolsch from Sixpoint Brewery.

The Yacht Club

City views & amazing seafood on the waterfront.

By Anne Raso

Holiday rush got you frazzled? With all the craziness going on this year, nothing could be more welcoming than a calm culinary escape out of town! The Yacht Club, which recently took over Joe’s Crab Shack space (541 River Road in Edgewater, NJ), will make you feel like you have entered a more relaxing world. You will be amazed at the seafood (especially the Lobster Roll which rivals any served in New England), and classic American landlubber fare like the tender Marinated Skirt Steak. You will love the open-air feeling thanks to The Yacht Club’s extra-large windows overlooking the Hudson and the NYC skyline.

The Yacht Club’s fare is priced reasonably, most notably the 1-1/4 lb. Lobster, which at $35 includes two sides; portions are large enough to share. There’s also the 3 lb. lobster for those seafood lovers who want the wow factor. Other stellar seafood dishes include Whole Grilled Branzino with Fresh Herbs, Flash Fried Whiting, Fried Shrimp, Grilled Faroe Islands Salmon with Quinoa Salad, Linguine with Clam Sauce, Flash Fried Sea Scallops, and a Fisherman’s Platter that includes Flash Fried Shrimp, Scallops, Filet of Sole and Calamari. The Famous Lobster Roll is arguably the most popular item on The Yacht Club’s menu.

COCKTAILS & BITES Still, others come for the remarkable specialty cocktails and to share the generous appetizers like Popcorn Shrimp, Maryland Crab Cakes, Florida Stone Crab Claws, Fried Calamari, and Mussels. Diners also love to share items from the Taco & Burgers section of the menu. Needless to say, Shrimp Tacos (with Herb Aioli) and Snapper Tacos (with Radishes, Shredded Purple Cabbage, and Chipotle) are huge hits.

The waterfront resto’s sides are the ultimate comfort foods and include Corn On The Cob, Sea Salt Fries, Lobster Mac And Cheese, Homemade Coleslaw, and Sweet Potato Fries. Desserts like Key Lime Pie, Chocolate Lava Cake, New York Strawberry Cheesecake please every sweet tooth.

We caught up with Executive Chef Gregory Zapantis to ask about his eatery’s clientele. “It’s locals and visitors from the city who come to the waterfront to enjoy great food and the Manhattan skyline,” he told us.

new york yacht club dining

FRESH IS BEST What does the highly independent and creative Zapantis—who also helms the kitchen at the nearby Mediterranean seafood eatery Molos in Weehawken—do to stay current on new trends? “I follow my own rules. Our fresh seafood is sourced as locally as possible. As an example, we travel twice a week to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to get the best tomatoes money can buy—and I always follow my customers’ advice.”

As mentioned before, the skirt steak (which comes with a heaping portion of golden fries) is amazing. We just had to get the chef’s secrets on how he makes a skirt steak more tender than a filet mignon. “We buy Omaha grass-fed beef, and there is a process. One is a 24-hour marinade and one 48, but the ingredients are a secret,” he told us. “The potatoes are high quality, and they’re extremely fresh. One secret I can reveal is that we fry our potatoes in super fresh canola oil that gets changed daily.

Even if you are one of those New Yorkers who rarely leaves the city, you’ll find yourself returning to The Yacht Club time and time again. Besides having reliable food in large portions and a Manhattan view that is second to none (especially at night), service is impeccable and speedy. You’ll find that the homey olive green and white walls, pendant lighting, wood paneling, sailboat artwork, and overall airy dining room will help you relax.

Be sure to check out their $39 Sunday Lobster Feast—you get a 1¼ lb. lobster, Corn on the Cob, Potatoes, and your choice of Key Lime Pie or Crème Brulee for dessert.

For more info on The Yacht Club, visit  yachtclubnj.com .  Reservations are recommended but not necessary. Take the NJ Transit Bus 158 at Port Authority to the River Road/Archer Street stop directly across the street from the Edgewater Commons Shopping Center; you will be a two-minute walk away from the restaurant. There is a NY Waterway ferry that goes from West 39th Street directly to an Edgewater dock from Mondays through Fridays (schedule is at nywaterway.com ).

We dined here on a Sunday evening while on vacation with family. The view was by far the best part of our experience. We dined ... outside, however on a trip to the restroom inside, we found the dining room and restroom to be in a dilapidated state. The menuwas small, drink selection small, and most importantly, the food was very disappointing and portions small. We were expectingfine dining, however we were met with flavorless risotto, a hair on the scallops, and watered down cocktails. The service wasadequate, but not spectacular (we understand it is hard to find help in the current climate...). Do not recommend thisrestaurant. Read more

90m Lurssen Phoenix 2 yacht exterior

90m Lürssen superyacht Phoenix 2 sold

The 90.1-metre Phoenix 2 has been sold with Rupert Nelson of Burgess representing the buyer and joint central agents Burgess and Cecil Wright representing the seller.

Built in steel and aluminium by Lürssen and designed throughout by Winch Design , Phoenix 2 was delivered in 2010 and refitted in 2019.

Phoenix 2 accommodates up to 14 guests in seven cabins. The full-beam owner’s suite, forward on the main deck, is accessed from the main deck or by using a glass spiral staircase from the owner’s private observation lounge and office on the upper deck. The circular sweep of the windows and their wraparound views is echoed in the black circle in the carpet and the recessed lighting overhead. Spectacular his-and-her bathrooms in contrasting marbles feature a bath and a steam shower, and one of the walk-in wardrobes can be concealed should her new owner wish to operate her commercially. There are three guest double VIPs, two double cabins and a twin-berth cabin, as well as quarters for a crew of 28.

The style is grand Art Deco with a ballroom, a gilt-and-black Steinway grand piano, vast dining table, crystal chandelier and an adjoining wine cellar. Features include a cinema, a winter garden with guest dining in open air or climate control, a beach club and a beauty salon with a Hammam.

New York and its skyline were the inspiration for Phoenix 2’ s styling, from the Empire State skyscrapers on the bar stools in the skylounge bar, lit by uplighters reminiscent of the torch held by the Statue of Liberty, to the firebird figurehead that looks as if it may have flown in from the Chrysler Building. Everything from the door handles to the cutlery is hand-made, each a work of art in its own right.

The sundeck sports a seven-metre oval pool with skylights filtering natural light into the lobby below. There are two Jacuzzis, one of which is exclusively dedicated to the owner, and two helipads. An elevator takes guests to the lower deck lobby to embark on one of the two 10-metre tenders – one is a limousine and the other a sports boat. A four-metre deep swim platform has large hydraulically operated steps lowering into the water for easy access from the sea.

The Lloyd's Register-classed, 2,667GT yacht has a cruising speed of 14 knots and maximum speed of 18 knots. Under twin 2,670hp MTU engines, the yacht's range is 6,000 nautical miles.

Phoenix 2 was asking €124,950,000 with VAT paid.

New York City by The MICHELIN Guide

See the New York City guide

new york yacht club dining

With so many excellent restaurants in New York City, it’s hard to justify dining at your hotel. But, some of the best restaurants can be found in some of the city’s top hotels. What could be more convenient (or luxurious) than dining in a spot just an elevator ride away from your hotel room?

From TriBeCa and SoHo to Midtown and more, here's our list where fine dining is a top hotel amenity.

The Dominick Soho

F. Scott Fitzgerald may have said that there are no second acts in American life, but we can all think of plenty of exceptions. The Dominick may have had a troubled past, thanks in no small part to the involvement of our nation’s most famously divisive real-estate developer, but the slate has been wiped clean — it’s got some new owners, it’s been given a new name, and now this Soho stunner is ready to be seen for what it is: a stylish, luxurious boutique hotel with a stellar Spring Street location and commanding views of downtown Manhattan and the Hudson River.

Vestry

One MICHELIN Star Vestry is a foolproof destination for guests craving a quiet evening in an intimate setting. Steering this kitchen's reins is Australian-born Chef Shaun Hergatt, whose admiration for Japanese culinary technique and elements is clear and woven into the seasonal vegetable- and seafood-based menu. Risotto with diced white asparagus is lovely but the diced, seared, glazed eel served on top is a clever embellishment. Tender, flavorful slow-cooked lamb neck with a dark, rich, Bourgogne reduction is another standout dish that speaks to the season. Dessert is particularly winsome; cheesecake fashioned into a dimpled wedge mimics Swiss cheese and is bested by grated apple decorated to look like a mouse. Smooth and rich, it's the ultimate ending.

The Dominick | Vestry

The New York EDITION Gramercy Park

Long departed from the hotel group that once went by his name, Ian Schrager has moved on to a relationship with Marriott International — a partnership whose fruits, the Edition hotels, are a little more upscale than the earlier Schrager offerings, and a lot more stylish than the typical Marriott fare. And the latest addition to the Edition family is something of a homecoming, opening on Madison Square Park, in the old Metropolitan Life Tower, otherwise known as That Great Big Clock Tower in the Flatiron District.

The Clocktower

There’s an elevated and contemporary British accent to the menu. Their version of fish and chips takes the national treasure to a new level. Beef Wellington may be a classic, but it isn't resting on any laurels here. Roasted Long Island duck is served with a chutney made from plum and shallots alongside woodsy chanterelles, but it's the chocolate torte with Earl Grey ice cream that you'll remember.

The New York EDITION | The Clocktower

11 Howard Soho

SoHo, formerly home to the artists’ lofts that were New York’s 20th-century Downtown signature, has, since around the turn of the millennium, gone steadily upscale — and steadily more international. Both trends find expression in 11 Howard, where contemporary Scandinavian design meets a more inclusive, less ostentatious version of luxury hospitality. It’s the first independent hotel project for architect Anda Andrei, after decades as the designer behind Ian Schrager’s path-breaking boutique-hotel projects. Produced in collaboration with Danish designers Space Copenhagen, 11 Howard avoids the sort of wall-to-wall bling that’s sometimes synonymous with New York hotels. And this one puts a bit of money where its egalitarian ideals are, as well — they call it “conscious hospitality,” which in concrete terms means passing on a share of revenue to charities like the Global Poverty Project.

The menu at this One MICHELIN Star is unapologetically French, though Chef Daniel Rose infuses his classics with a strong dose of personality. A selection of “gourmandises” showcases such exemplary classics as pike quenelles or sautéed sweetbreads, which achieve prominent flavor when paired with tomato crème. This may be tailed by beef cheek and foie gras terrine in a pitch-perfect sherry vinaigrette. A venerated rabbit dish is presented as three acts: gently braised legs in a clear consommé with vegetables; stuffed saddle with a rustic pan sauce; and the rest matched with delicious mustard-enrobed onions.

11 Howard | Le Coucou

The Greenwich Hotel Tribeca

What do we know about the Greenwich Hotel? It’s got a celebrity owner (none other than Robert DeNiro), a prime Tribeca location, impeccable design credentials courtesy of one of New York’s top firms, Grayling Design, and some truly obsessive construction, having something to do with thousands of very expensive handmade bricks. Now there’s no question that all these things make for great press, but do they mean anything to the guests?

Locanda Verde

This ever-trendy yet refined Italian ristorante is as much coveted for its gorgeous setting as its lineup of rustic, tasty fare. The ambience is always abuzz and everyone looks beautiful amid low lights, a long bar, and walls adorned with wine bottles.

The Greenwich Hotel | Locanda Verde

The Langham, New York, Fifth Avenue Midtown East

If the towering structure is any guide — that’s meant rhetorically, by the way, of course it’s a guide — then you could safely expect Langham Place, New York, Fifth Avenue to be a pretty big deal. And naturally it is. This sixty-story skyscraper joins the Empire State Building on the Midtown skyline, and the architecture, by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates, is suitably monumental.

Nestled within the Langham Hotel with walls of windows overlooking Fifth Avenue, Ai Fiori is the perfect perch for the expense account crowd. The handsome marble bar and lounge is ideal for a post-work drink; while large florals, leather chairs and square columns lure families into the formal dining room.
