Ritz-Carlton Launches Ilma: World’s Largest Hotel-Branded Superyacht
Share this article.
By Fran Golden (Bloomberg) When Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection finally unveiled its 298-passenger Evrima in 2022 after a few years of high-water drama involving construction delays at a Spanish shipyard , it blazed a trail as the first hotel-branded superyacht. Two years later, the brand is established as a posh option for cruise skeptics: 50% of its guests are first-time cruisers and 20% have already booked repeat trips. By those metrics, the yacht line is a success.
But that doesn’t mean it’s been smooth sailing. When Ritz-Carlton officially debuts its second yacht, the 448-passenger, $600 million Ilma , on Sept. 2, it will represent a pivot for the brand.
It wasn’t totally intentional. First there was the shipyard drama, which necessitated a switch to a more experienced boat builder called Chantiers de l’Atlantique in St. Nazaire, France . Then there was a move to a hybrid liquid natural gas system, which reduces carbon dioxide emissions and allows Ilma to switch to sustainable fuels in the future—but requires a larger ship to be built. And last came a leadership shuffle for the nascent company—which licenses its name from Marriott International and is run as a separate entity—that brought in a new chief executive officer, Jim Murren, formerly of MGM Resorts International .
As a result, the 790-foot Ilma is a substantially larger ship than the intentionally intimate, 628-foot Evrima . And the stakes are substantially higher, too. Murren says he hopes this second vessel will cement Ritz-Carlton’s leadership of the ultra-luxury cruise market as its hotel brand rivals—Four Seasons, Orient Express and Aman—prepare to sail in with their own ships in 2026 and 2027.
All that upcoming competition adds urgency to Murren’s plans: He aims to add three more ships to Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, broaden the concept to other Marriott luxury hotel brands and go public .
The company recently accessed public markets for the first time and raised $300 million in a senior secured bond issue, which Murren describes as “oversubscribed.” He says that’s enough to wrap financing for Ilma and a sister ship, Luminara , due next July, and still have some funds left. Talks with shareholders about ships No. 4 and No. 5, also set to be built in France, start in the fall.
But for now, all eyes are trained on Ilma , which reflects many tweaks made in response to results of Evrima guest surveys and offers more space per passenger than any other ship in the world. It commands rates of $2,600 per cabin per night—an enviable fare even in luxury cruising. This market, Murren says, has an estimated potential of more than $5 billion per year and is barely tapped. With only 50,000 suites a year to fill on two ships, he says the Collection doesn’t “have nearly enough suites to sell.”
What it does have is plenty of Champagne: The Collection expects to pour 6,000 bottles of complimentary Moët & Chandon a month on its two ships combined.
Here’s a first look at what to expect from the Collection’s latest ship—all good indicators of what to expect in the company’s future.
A Stellar Pool Deck
The yacht’s name means “water” in Maltese, and the Malta-flagged Ilma is designed to max out views and water experiences—something guests on the smaller Evrima said they wanted more of.
The most significant addition is a main pool set above the top deck. Surrounded by daybeds, it replicates the above-the-world experience of a rooftop pool at a swank hotel—and the number of loungers around it was determined by studies conducted on Evrima so guests won’t have to fight for a prime spot.
As for the expected crowd: Like Evrima ’s passengers, the ship likely will draw high-net-worth North American travelers, especially Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program members, ready to show off their designer swimwear. Some will come with their progeny, attracted by a Ritz-Kids program , but most will be adults, average age 53, and no matter their age, many are retired. Based on the Evrima experience, they’ll be looking to let loose and have a good time at sea.
Bells and Whistles at Sea Level
A favorite spot on the earlier ship is the Marina, a cocktail lounge whose tiered terrace has a bottom section that can be lowered to sea level and hover over the water. When the yacht is at anchor, guests can jump off the back for a swim or launch paddleboards and other equipment.
Ilma ’s Marina will be larger and have an even more striking entrance to the sea, thanks to a floating platform created out of inflatable and rigid pieces by superyacht toy company AquaBanas. Think a floating catwalk that leads out to a netted swimming area with floating chairs. (Some even have a canopy above them.) It takes the overwater hammock trend to a whole new level.
Multiplying the Suites
The two oversize “owner suites,” the top category on Evrima, were oversubscribed, so Ilma has eight. While all suites have a private outdoor terrace, these $80,000-per-week accommodations have outdoor living areas with whirlpool, shower, couches, loungers and dining space. Indoors, there’s Calcutta marble on the bar, emerald marble on the dining table and bespoke sofas by French designer Ligne Roset.
Concierge Suites are another new suite category, all four topping 1,000 square feet of combined indoor and outdoor space. All suites come with king-size beds, double-sink bathrooms and personalized concierge service. As on the Evrima , there are practically as many crew members as guests.
More Space for Wellness
Guest feedback also led to the decision for a bigger Ritz-Carlton Spa on Ilma , with 11 treatment rooms compared to Evrima’s five and some of those are equipped for outdoor massages. A 12-part, six-foot-long David Hockney swimming scene lithograph greets guests at the entrance, and dim lighting sets the mood for treatments such as a stretching-massage combo called the Ultimate Bamboo Experience ($420), which according to its description in the spa’s brochure, “is perfect for slowing busy minds.” Products throughout are from 111SKIN and ESPA. The spa also has a cycling studio.
Michelin-Quality Meals
The open-air, pan-Latin Beach House restaurant on Deck 5 is among five dining options. Done by Toronto-based Chapi Chapo Design, it’s likely to be the buzziest, since it has its own infinity splash pool. Evenings here may begin with sunset cocktails, live Latin music and ceviche. The menu is by James Beard Award-winning California chef Michael Mina. Over at Seta su Ilma, the ship’s most intimate restaurant, the 11-course modern Italian tasting menu ($350 with wine pairings) comes courtesy of another Beard winner, Washington, DC-based Fabio Trabocchi.
Doubling Down on Nightlife
Even though Ilma is a larger ship, its designers took care to stay away from anything deemed overly cruise-shippy and maintained a few spaces that will be recognizable from Evrima . One of them is the Living Room, a meeting spot for both day and night inspired by a high-ceilinged hotel lobby bar. But the designers have added an oval-shape dance floor where a DJ can spin tunes late into the night. The other nightclub spot is Mediterranean-inspired Mistral—the restaurant’s outdoor terrace will take on a sultry vibe once the last courses are served.
Expect high-end art throughout. An art history major in college, Murren helped choose the pieces to adorn the public spaces, including an original Andy Warhol sea turtle silkscreen above a banquette in the Living Room.
New Itineraries and Destinations
Like Evrima , Ilma will leave the Mediterranean for the Caribbean for the winter season and head back in the spring. In July, Ilma will sail around Northern Europe and the Baltic region—a first for the company—with varying itineraries that are set to include Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and Riga, Latvia.
While most of Ritz-Carlton’s cruises are seven nights long, the company is also ramping up five-night sailings for busy executives who can’t take a whole week off. This coming Caribbean season, it’s additionally testing three- and four-night voyages from Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, in hopes of engaging even more new-to-cruise guests. On those trips and other Caribbean sailings, ultra-luxe excursions will include helicoptering from Antigua to Barbuda for a master sushi class at Nobu ($2,900 per person) or sunset sailing with a private chef from Bonaire ($1,250 per person).
Up next for the line will be the 452-passenger Luminara, which after a few inaugural months in the Mediterranean will begin exploring the Asia-Pacific region in December 2025—another common request from the passenger surveys.
As for Ilma , shakedown cruises, as rehearsal-style family and friends trips are called, are happening this month, and the first paying guests will come onboard on Sept. 2, for a seven-night jaunt from Monte Carlo to Rome.

Boat of the Week: This Speedy 153-Foot Superyacht Has Its Own Turbo Boost

What do you get if you have two friends with a passion for boats, high-profile automotive careers and cash to burn? The answer is the 153-foot superyacht Excellence , a vessel that oozes speed, has brand pedigree and captures the hearts of all who own it.
Built in 2001 by Formula One racing car driver and automobile entrepreneur Roger Penske, who named her Detroit Eagle , the yacht combined Feadship ’s Dutch craftsmanship with Penske’s own brand of engine. (Disclosure: Roger Penske is the father of Jay Penske, who owns this publication, as well as its sister publications in the Penske Media portfolio.)

The shipyard that built the ‘titanic’ has filed for bankruptcy.
“At the time [Roger] Penske owned a company called Detroit Diesel that made diesel engines for boats, and he was also involved with a company that built turbine engines,” current owner and Penske’s longtime friend, Herb Chambers, told Robb Report . “So, he went to Feadship and built a lightweight aluminum yacht with a shallow draft to demonstrate the capability of his engines.”
The Feadship was originally built and owned for years by Roger Penske, who wanted a very fast, very luxurious superyacht. Penske installed his own Detroit Diesel-branded engines and then added a 5,600-hp turbine to give the yacht a 10-knot pop at the top end. Courtesy of Burgess Yachts
The immaculate, polished-chrome engine room, with the diesels painted in fire-engine red, has always been a symbolic indicator of the type of impressive speeds the yacht can reach. The engines are 16-cylinder 4000 series, which generate 3,650 horsepower each. Penske then added something the superyacht world had never seen before–a Lycoming TF-50 gas turbine for an additional 5,600 horsepower.
“The boat can cruise at about 23 knots on diesel engines,” Chambers says, “but if you really want it to go fast, you push a button and the turbine kicks in taking the boat from 23 knots up to around 33 knots. It really is a remarkable vessel.”
Serial boat builder Chambers grew up in the Boston area, spending long summers on the water at his grandmother’s cottage. “I always had the desire to have a boat,” he says, a goal he realized at 24 with a 30-foot Trojan flybridge motoryacht. The Trojan would be the first of five yachts called A-Copy , named after his successful copy-machine business.
“After I sold the copy company and had this windfall of money, I ordered a 127-foot Feadship. The name A-Copy wasn’t of any significance to me anymore so I tried to think of a name that I would like,” Chambers says. “I’m not an avid reader, but I read Tom Peters’s book In Search of Excellence and loved it. It’s about running a good business. I thought Excellence , that is a great name for a boat.”
Launched last summer, Chambers’s newest 262-foot Abeking & Rasmussen “Excellence” has a futuristic hull shape, with an eagle-beak bow and large glass panels on the exterior. Courtesy Abeking & Rasmussen
To date, Chambers has owned more than 40 yachts of many sizes. Some were even sold before he took delivery. The name “Excellence” serves as a constant reminder to his 30-year-long captain for the need to maintain high standards on board, he says. It has also carried through to Chamber’s six most recent yachts. This includes his largest yacht to date, a striking 262-foot Abeking & Rasmussen launched in 2019, on which he enjoys cruising the European waters of Croatia, Greece, Italy and St Tropez. That Excellence won Robb Report ’s 2020 Best of the Best award for interiors.
With its “eagle” reverse bow and triple-height glass atrium, the Winch-designed yacht turns heads wherever it goes. But that’s hardly surprising considering Philip Starck’s opinion-dividing Motor Yacht A was the design inspiration this latest Excellence .
“When I first saw Motor Yacht A , I said, ‘That looks like a submarine. Who would ever want to have a boat like that?’ And the second time I saw it, I said, ‘That boat is pretty nice. I kinda like that bow.’ And the third time I saw it, I thought, ‘I absolutely love that.’ So, that’s where the idea for Excellence ’s bow came from.”
While he has recently listed the Feadship “Excellence,” Chambers plans to enjoy the yacht for while he still owns her. He has often owned two yachts—the newer one that is often under charter, and a smaller, faster one that is at his disposal for his “personal use.”
While Chambers’s appreciation of Feadship has long endured after his first foray with the Dutch shipbuilder, it wasn’t until a 2018 visit to Fort Lauderdale Boat Show that Penske’s 153-foot yacht caught Chamber’s eye. Prized by Chambers for its flexible speed and six-foot Bahamas-friendly draft, it is one of the few yachts that he hasn’t put on the charter market.
“I view the Feadship as a very personal boat,” says Chambers. “It’s only a four-stateroom boat, but you can bring three other couples or family members with you. When I told Roger Penske that I had bought the boat, he said his family was mad at him when he sold it because they loved it so much.”
An extensive 2019 refit of the yacht includes a full paint job, an updated sound system and refurb of the original John Munford interior. Chambers bought the yacht for his own personal use. “Because my boats get chartered, I always love to have a boat that’s available just for me,” Chambers says. “I built a 94-foot Mangusta for that purpose and used it in America when my big yacht was on charter in the Mediterranean or Caribbean. The Feadship can do pretty much what the Mangusta did, but it’s a bigger, more comfortable boat, so I sold the Mangusta at the start of 2020.”
The 2001 build has undergone a complete refurbishment of the interior.
Being a serial owner, Chambers also recently listed the updated Feadship. He plans to enjoy the yacht while she is still available. Will he miss this Excellence ?
“I really don’t know,” Chambers says, pausing. “I would maybe look to build a similar boat, around 150 feet, something that would be fast. But the Abeking & Rasmussen Excellence is still new to me. The time for me to sell a boat is when I still like it.”
That creates a great opportunity for a buyer who wants a piece of superyacht history–a very fast superyacht history.
Excellence is co-listed for sale with Burgess and Merle Wood & Associates for $16,900,000. Here are more views.

World’s Largest Hotel-Branded Superyacht Sets Sail For Maiden Voyage
Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection has officially launched its second superyacht, the 448-passenger Ilma. The $600 million Ilma, unveiled on September 2, is the world’s largest hotel-branded superyacht.
The Ilma’s debut comes after many challenges, including construction delays and a change of shipbuilders. Initially contracted to a Spanish shipyard, the project was transferred to Chantiers de l’Atlantique in St. Nazaire, France.
The vessel has a hybrid liquid natural gas system designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions while allowing for the use of sustainable fuels in the future.
A new management team has been established to guide the brand’s future. It is led by CEO Jim Murren, who formerly worked for MGM Resorts International.

Ilma, measuring 790 feet, is much larger than Evrima, which is 628 feet. Based on guest feedback from the Evrima, the new ship incorporates several modifications, including increased spaces per passenger and a focus on enhancing sea views and experiences.
Accommodation rates begin at $2,600 per cabin per night, and the ship provides an exclusive experience for its passengers.
Ilma has luxurious amenities, including a main pool over the top deck surrounded by daybeds and loungers. The Marina, a popular feature on Evrima, has been upgraded to incorporate a floating platform designed by AquaBanas for more water activities.
The new superyacht has eight massive “owner suites” and four Concierge Suites, each with private outdoor spaces, marble interiors, and bespoke furnishings. The vessel’s attractions include a larger Ritz-Carlton Spa with 11 treatment rooms, an expanded cycling studio, and Michelin-quality dining.
Ilma’s dining options include the open-air pan-Latin Beach House, which features an infinity splash pool, and Seta su Ilma, an intimate restaurant serving an 11-course modern Italian tasting menu. For nightlife experiences, the Living Room, a high-ceilinged pub with a dance floor, and Mistral, a Mediterranean-inspired nightclub, are also available.
The superyacht will travel between the Mediterranean and Caribbean seasons, with upcoming July itineraries to Northern Europe and the Baltic region.
The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection plans to expand with three additional ships and is exploring other Marriott luxury brands. The company recently raised $300 million through a senior secured bond offering to help finance Ilma and a sister ship, Luminara, which is set to launch next July.
The company will now offer shorter three- and four-night trips in addition to its seven-night long cruises. Luxury activities include helicopter trips to Barbuda for a master sushi session and sunset sailing with a private chef.
The 452-passenger Luminara, the next ship in line, will explore the Asia-Pacific region beginning in December 2025.

Meet Ilma, Ritz-Carlton's New Superyacht
Spacious suites and michelin-level dining are great ways to see the world.
Cruising is a polarizing vacation.
Some people love it; others hate it with commendable passion.
But everyone likes luxury, ocean-view suites and top-notch food.
So when you can find such things aboard a floating vessel that's more yacht than massive cruise ship, and one that's carrying some serious hotel bonafides, it's worth taking notice.
Ilma is the newly launched superyacht from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection . It measures 790 feet and sports just 224 suites, all with private terraces providing direct access to the sea.
It's stopping at ports of call in coveted destinations across the world, including iconic yachting playgrounds in the Mediterranean, the white sand beaches of the Caribbean, and historic cities of Northern Europe.
Onboard, you’ll find a max of 448 guests and one of the highest space ratios at sea. For even more space, book one of the larger upper category suites, which measure more than 1,000 square feet.
The ship has fine dining venues, including restaurants conceptualized by Michelin-starred chefs. Seta su Ilma by Chef Fabio Trabocchi is a modern Italian fine-dining restaurant, and The Beach House is an indoor/outdoor restaurant offering 180-degree views of the sea and Pan-Latin cuisine developed in collaboration with chef Michael Mina. Naturally, there’s also plenty of terrace space, with a pool, pool bar and live entertainment.
Ilma embarked on its maiden voyage on September 2. Plenty more journeys are coming up, in case you enjoy feeling the fresh sea breeze on your face while sipping champagne on your balcony.
On September 26, Ilma takes off on a 12-night voyage from Athens to Rome, stopping in Crete, Mykonos, Sicily and more. On October 22, you can set sail from Barcelona to Lisbon, with stops in Palma de Mallorca and Tangier.
Other itineraries feature trips in the Caribbean, where you can see St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Martinique. Take a wine-soaked trip from Lisbon to Portsmouth, England, that stops in Porto and Bordeaux. Or book the voyage from Amsterdam to Copenhagen that swings through Oslo and Gothenburg, Sweden. You've got options, and none of them are the cookie-cutter cruises you'll find on the massive, name-brand ships hosting spring breakers and conga lines.

Bottom Line
Offering stylish rooms on a quiet stretch of Madison Avenue in Murray Hill, The Roger is a sophisticated, four-pearl boutique hotel within a 10-minute walk of several subway lines and major landmarks like the Empire State Building and Herald Square. Renovations in 2012 introduced chic interiors by renowned designers Anna Busta and Annette Jaffe, starting at the posh two-story lobby lounge and extending through to the 194 modern guest rooms, which feature flat-screen TVs, city-centric art, and C.O. Bigelow toiletries. Some rooms offer terraces and stunning Empire State Building views. The Parlour Bistro and Lounge serves upscale comfort food incorporating items from iconic NYC eateries. Oyster Hotel Review
A stylish boutique hotel offering a break from the bustle of the big city.
Opened as the Roger Williams Hotel in 1930, this historic property has found new life as Hotel AKA NoMad, a chic boutique hotel in mostly quiet Murray Hill. Stepping into the hotel feels like stepping into a design magazine. The sophisticated two-story lobby by renowned interior designer Anna Busta is meticulously outfitted with plush blue sofas, soft rugs, chevron parquet floors, and glass, bubble-like light fixtures. Original candid black-and-white photos of celebrities past and present line the whitewashed exposed brick walls and the shelves encircling the lobby’s soaring columns. By day, the lobby is subdued, with guests quietly sipping coffee or reading. In the evening, when the small corner bar opens, it transforms into a hip but tranquil lounge scene. Perched above on the mezzanine level, the warm Parlour Bistro and Lounge draws a mix of stylish hotel guests and local businesspeople looking for comfort food, creative cocktails, and quiet conversation. Thoughtful extras like seasonal lobby beverages and weekday evening wine hours make guests feel welcome, though they come with a mandatory daily facilities fee.
On a quiet block of Madison Avenue in Murray Hill, a few minutes’ walk from the Empire State Building
Tucked among the offices and residential buildings of Murray Hill, Hotel AKA NoMad is removed from the frenzy of the city's busy tourist areas, yet still ideally located for exploring its top sights. Guests can walk to Madison Square Park, featuring the original outdoor Shake Shack outpost, in three minutes. The iconic Empire State Building is a five-minute walk away. Herald Square, home to the flagship location of Macy’s department store, is 10 minutes away on foot. In 15 minutes or less, guests can walk to landmarks like Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, the Chrysler Building, and bustling Grand Central Terminal. Several subway stations within a short walk make it easy to get around: the 33rd Street 6 stop is two minutes away, the 28th Street 6 stop is five minutes away, and the 28th Street N, Q, R, and W stop is seven minutes away. Lower Manhattan and Central Park are within a half-hour subway ride in opposite directions. The hotel is also in an easy area for hailing taxis. The drive to either LaGuardia Airport or JFK International Airport should take a half-hour to an hour, depending on traffic.
Sophisticated, modern rooms with NYC-centric art, some featuring terraces and breathtaking Empire State Building views
Hotel AKA NoMad’s modern, Annette Jaffe-designed rooms feature large, striking black-and-white photographs of New York City landmarks over beds and Egyptian cotton linens. The clean lines of the polished furniture are balanced by cool gray carpets and patterned drapes. Flat-screen TVs, spacious desks, and safes come standard, as do refrigerated minibars and a wide array of snacks (both for a fee). The rooms notably lack coffeemakers. Wi-Fi is included as part of the daily facilities fee. Upgrading to Premier or Empire Rooms adds leather benches, colorful armchairs, or corner locations with two windows, and some have large private furnished terraces. Select rooms in these classes, including those on the penthouse level, surpass the stunning architecture artwork by giving guests the real thing: spectacular views of the Empire State Building towering overhead.
Closets come equipped with umbrellas, irons, and ironing boards. Standard bathrooms are tiny, and those in the upgraded rooms are only slightly larger. All feature white, mosaic-patterned tiled walls and plate glass mirrors, along with hairdryers and C.O. Bigelow toiletries, including eco-friendly pump dispensers in the showers or tubs. Fees for extra bathroom amenities like shaving kits can leave some guests feeling nickel-and-dimed. Plush robes come standard in upgraded rooms, though they’re available in all rooms upon request.
A warm restaurant serving NYC favorites, plus a hip lobby bar and a modern 24-hour gym
The amenities at Hotel AKA NoMad are designed to make guests feel welcome and relaxed. Overlooking the lobby on the hotel’s mezzanine level is the Parlour Bistro and Lounge, a culinary love letter to New York City curated by restaurateur Jonathan Morr. The day starts with the Breakfast Pantry, a buffet featuring options from some of the city’s most iconic eateries, including H&H Bagels, Balthazar, Sarabeth’s, and Petrossian, offered for a fee in a warm atmosphere of blue leather chairs and striped banquettes. At lunchtime, the buffet is replaced by a full-service bar, while the restaurant serves up casual American dishes and new takes on comfort food classics, incorporating NYC staples like cheeses from local favorite Murray’s. Handcrafted specialty cocktails complete the picture, which guests can also order from the bar in chic lobby below. Both are open late, and 24-hour room service is offered.
The hotel’s large 24-hour fitness center, renovated in 2018, features Life Fitness cardio machines, a Peloton bike, and free weights. Guests looking to host a meeting or event can choose between a small conference room or the outdoor Veranda 411 Terrace. There’s also a small Mac Lounge next to reception where guests can go online, print, and send faxes. The lobby serves morning coffee and tea, as well as seasonal afternoon drinks like iced tea or hot cider. They’re covered by the daily facilities fee, which also includes Wi-Fi, weekday wine hours at the lobby bar, concierge services, and use of the fitness center and Mac Lounge. Valet parking is available for a daily fee.
