Racing Events

The azores and back race aka the azab.

The AZAB (Azores and Back) is a Category 1 ocean yacht race with each of the two legs being 1,170 nautical miles even if the rhumb line can be sailed! The Azores and Back Race was created in response to the desire for an ocean race which started and finished in the UK, a wish that was taken up by the RCYC’s Colin Drummond in 1975 and has been run every four years since. The race is for all comers, from experienced racers sailing high-performance boats to local cruisers in need of a challenge.

The next race will leave Falmouth in June 2027 for Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island, one of the nine Azores Archipelago Islands that lie in the Eastern Atlantic. Following a rest, replenishing and several parties they will depart to race back to Falmouth.  The 1975 race was for single handers only. Between 1979 and 2019 both single and double handers were included. In 2023 the ‘silverware’ remained for shorthanded entries sailing either single or double handed but a new division was introduced for yachts with a maximum of four crew including the skipper. This ‘crewed’ division will race for glassware. The five starts will be for Multihulls, Class 1, Class 2, Class 3 and Class 4 regardless of crew numbers.

The Azorean stopover allows preparation for the challenge of the return journey but is also a great chance for crews to celebrate their achievements from leg one, socialise with fellow participants and see something of São Miguel. Several functions are put on by the RCYC and Clube Naval de Ponta Delgada, and the Pontoon Party which competitors traditionally run is always a very enjoyable event.

MailASail, the Title Sponsor for the 2019 and 2023 events are specialists in coastal and offshore communications, and helped improve communication systems for participants of the race, including facilitating on-board blog posts and updates, meaning that following the race is even more exciting for participants and spectators alike. This level of communication was introduced in the 2019 race brought a whole new dimension. Blogs from several of the competitors provided unmissable reading.

Tracking will again be in place allowing those at home to follow progress and provisional race positions.

The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club welcomes sailors of all ages and abilities to our club.

Located within a Grade II listed clubhouse on a 17 th  century private quayside, the club overlooks spectacular views of Falmouth, Flushing, Carrick Roads and beyond. RCYC was formed in 1871, and continues to hold close its traditional values whilst extending a warm welcome to new members.

As a club, we enjoy first class sailing. We host regular club racing as well as world-renowned sailing events. Whilst there is a focus on yacht sailing, we are enthusiastic supporters of dinghy sailing and motor boating interests.

Year round the club runs frequent social events including lectures, tuition and charity fundraising events. Our dining and bar facilities are open all year.

Royal Cornwall Yacht Club

Opening times.

Royal Cornwall Yacht Club

The Club has been at the centre of many sailing events in and around Falmouth since 1872.

We welcome visitors from other Sailing Clubs. The RCYC has a very active Racing and Cruising calendar, with regular Friday evenings’ racing in Carrick Roads as well as AZAB11 and other long distance races. The range of yachts racing includes Sunbeams, Laser SB3 via many different racers and cruisers. During the sailing season but especially when the yachts are laid up, the Club members are very involved in the extremely active Social calendar.

The Flag Officers lead RCYC supported by the House Committee and other sub-Committees.

Many of our members and their families have been with us for most of their lives and enjoy the truly welcoming atmosphere and the Club’s Bar & Catering facilities. The membership ranges from the older retired member through to the younger yachtsmen and women that have joined the Club more recently. The common denominator is a love of sailing and yachts. We even have a few Motorboat skippers as well!

The Club has a history of racing as the Organising Authority of the AZAB Azores and Back race series every four years, and as the home of the Falmouth Sunbeam fleet amongst other more current fleets. We are full supporters of the COGS race Series and obviously the Henri-Lloyd Falmouth Week in August.

Richard Mille Classic Yacht Regatta Returns to Falmouth

Categories:

General News

royal cornwall yacht club newsletter

Falmouth, Cornwall, will again provide the showcase start for one of the world’s most prestigious classic yacht regattas this summer after the historic Harbour so impressed luxury Swiss watchmaker Richard Mille with its organisation and unique setting for the brand’s inaugural Classic Cup event last year.

The Richard Mille Cup will gather a fleet of around fifteen beautifully restored classic superyachts in a contemporary take on the regatta circuits of pre-war years, beginning with three days of racing hosted by Falmouth Harbour and the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club from June 2 and ending in Le Havre, France, on June 15.

The event will bring around 500 competitors and their guests to Falmouth as well as hundreds of spectators, crowds of whom last year took to the water or lined the coast around Falmouth Harbour and Bay, St Mawes and St Anthony Headland to watch the majestic vessels’ fierce competition.

royal cornwall yacht club newsletter

Dr William Collier of Classic Regattas who organise the Richard Mille Cup says, “A lot of thought and planning went into the 2023 event, the feedback from participants was tremendous and when we started to discuss the 2024 regatta we realised that the best was simply stay with the proven formulae of Falmouth, Dartmouth, Cowes and Le Havre.

“These are all mythical destinations for sailors and the yacht clubs at each of the venues excelled themselves so we are very happy to return knowing that we will get a warm welcome and excellent racing.”

The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club has been a feature of Falmouth’s iconic harbour since 1871 and as a vibrant club today hosts many national and international events. During last year’s Richard Mille Cup the RCYC Sailing Trust took eighty local young people out on the water to watch the racing aboard the pleasure boat Princessa and proved such a focus the watchmaker will be supporting a similar outing this year.

Royal Cornwall Yacht Club Commodore Sarah Hancock says, “I was delighted to receive the call asking if the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club would host the Richard Mille Cup again this year. Owners and crews clearly appreciated the racing and the hospitality of the onshore facilities that we provided and expressed a strong wish to return.

“I think it’s due in part to the stunning location, but also to the huge effort put in by our race management team to cope with what were very challenging, light-airs conditions in 2023. And for spectators, what could be better than watching the spectacular majesty of these classic yachts racing so competitively in our historic bay, as they did over 100 years ago?”

Falmouth Harbour will showcase the first events of the two-week competition featuring schooners and cutters joining from around the world, some of which are well over a century old. From Falmouth the fleets will race to Dartmouth in Devon, then Cowes, Isle of Wight and on to a spectacular finish at Le Havre, France.

Some of the yachts, including last year’s overall winner the 42m twin-masted schooner Mariette and the 65m three-master Adix, have been restored or refitted on many occasions over the years by Falmouth’s own superyacht specialists Pendennis Shipyard – in between their voyaging and competing across the world.

Falmouth Harbour CEO Miles Carden says, “Falmouth – the third deepest natural harbour in the world with a history steeped in boatbuilding and renovation – is an incredibly hospitable port town. Mooring and berthing in the heart of our inner harbour accentuates the spectatorship of the Richard Mille Cup for the community and for crews and guests – an opportunity to step straight off these beautiful boats into our vibrant town.

“Hosting the prestige and size of these vessels is not without its complexities but all do-able thanks to a brilliant Harbour team. We are delighted to again be hosting the start of this incredible race.”

The Richard Mille contenders are invited owners and charterers of yachts built before 1939 or faithful replicas of such yachts, with vessels competing in the Schooner and Cutter categories. The event includes racing and social events organised by the Royal Cornwall and the Royal Dart Yachts Clubs and the Royal Yacht Squadron, before the final race of the Société des Régates du Havre in France.

The second Richard Mille Cup will take place from June 2 to June 15 2024 with further details of the events, races and competing vessels announced in due course. For more information visit www.richardmillecup.com

Murmansk is the only major city on the Kola Peninsula; it is Russia's main merchant and fishing port on the Arctic Ocean.

The region's smaller cities mostly owe their existence to mining and mineral processing: Monchegorsk was founded at a copper and nickel mine (which is now exhausted, but the associated metal refinery keeps operating, using ore from Norilsk ), Olenegorsk and Kovdor mine iron ore, Kandalaksha has an aluminum refinery. It is not too hard to guess that Apatity processes apatite (the source material for phosphorous fertilizer, mined in nearby Kirovsk ), while Nikel (and nearby Zapolyarny ) mine and process nickel ore.

A special permit may be required for visiting the naval harbors (Severomorsk, Polyarny, etc.) and air bases in Kola Fjord north of Murmansk, or elsewhere in the region.

Besides Russians, the peninsula also has an indigenous population of Sami people . Many of them live in the Oblast's Lovozero District, and are engaged in reindeer husbandry.

Murmansk Oblast is of interest to a tourist mostly for its novelty value — it is in Russia's extreme north, above the Arctic Circle, and is relatively easy to get to from Saint Petersburg . The highlights of a Murmansk Oblast trip are its capital and perhaps also an adventurous trip out to Kola. To heighten the novelty value of your trip, try to come around the summer Equinox, when the sun moves around the sky but never sets, or the winter Solstice, when the sun never rises and the region is plunged into blackness. The winter is cold, but it is also the best time to see the Northern Lights .

Each year, Murmansk Oblast plays host to the Festival of the North, known as Prazdnik Severa, a 10-day annual sporting event in 20 winter sports.

As with elsewhere in Russia, Russian is the main language in Murmansk Oblast.

This is part of the Sámi homeland, but the Sámi are a small minority and even among them most only speak Russian. Traditionally Skolt, Kildin, Ter and Akkala Sámi were spoken here, all of which are eastern Sámi languages, not mutually intelligible with e.g. Northern Sámi . The languages now have few speakers, with Lovozero being one of the few places where one of the languages is still widely spoken.

The easiest way to get in is via Murmansk's airport ( MMK   IATA ), which is served by flights from Moscow , Saint Petersburg , and Arkhangelsk . There are also flights from northern Norway and, seasonally, from Helsinki in Finland.

A smaller airport operates in Apatity/Kirovsk, with flights from Moscow, St Petersburg, and a few other destinations.

A single railway, constructed during World War I, connects Murmansk with the rest of Russia. On the way to Murmansk, trains stop in most other cities of the province (Kandalaksha, Polyarnye Zori, Apatity, Olenegorsk [for Monchegorsk]), Kola).

Several trains a day run to Murmansk from Moscow (at least 28 hours) and St Petersburg (24 hours); on the way to Murmansk, they also stop in Petrozavodsk and other towns of Russian Karelia.

There is also a train to Murmansk from Vologda . During the summer holiday season, additional trains are scheduled between Murmansk and popular resort destinations in southern Russia.

The Sedov (the Magdalene Vinnen II in 1921-1936, the Kommodore Johnsen in 1936-1948), is a 4-masted steel barque, acquired by the USSR as a war reparation in 1945. She was the largest traditional sailing ship for about eighty years.

Today, the Sedov is used to train cadets from Murmansk , Arkhangelsk , and Saint Petersburg universities. Also, she often participates in maritime international events. The photos by Eduard Gordeev

The journey to the North Pole on Russian icebreaker

No comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Nature , Technology , Travel , Video
