Summerland 40 Boat Review – Summers Here

By Barry Tyler for Pacific Motor Yacht – http://www.pacificmotoryacht.com/ Many serious cruising folk will of course be well aware of the Fountaine Pajot range of sailing catamarans; perhaps not so many however will know the French manufacturer also produces a range of equally serious ocean-going power catamarans, the latest addition to the range being the Summerland 40 Trawler Catamaran. Click here to download the article and images in PDF format or read on for full story … Those folk perhaps not so keen on hoisting sails any longer will be most heartened to learn of this bonafide 40-foot very serious power-dedicated stand-alone ‘Trawler Catamaran’ range, a continuation incidentally of the current Trawler range of the Highland 35 Pilot, the Cumberland 46 and the Queensland 55 models. Designed by the renowned Michel Joubert / Bernard Nivelt team and built at Fountaine Pajot’s new 130,000sq m state of the art ISO 9001-accredited facility in Aigrefeuille, France, the company is describing this as their best Trawler yet. Big call, but it does offer some hint as to the high regard they have for this new ‘power’ model. Following its world debut at the Sydney International Boat Show earlier this year demand in our region, according to Australasian Master Distributor Multihull Solutions – has been intense. And the reason for that is perhaps best quantified by the very people who purchased this first example; a consortium of family and friends who quite simply were in search of an efficient, cheap to run and maintain, durable, sea-kindly and forgiving style of vessel that would lend itself well to a ‘sharing’ situation. That’s the operative word, affordable, for this boat in its standard quite acceptable form was just $720,000. Add the toys such as the teak laid decks, cockpit and transom, the 24-inch TV and DVD player, the additional battery charger, the NavPilot and FI-50 Multi-system, the bimini and clears set and even the full offshore ‘Safety’ package – and still the cost is (well) under $800K!

Living the Lifestyle!

My first perusal of the Summerland suggested yes it was predominantly more of the same from FP, yet with quite a few new twists and turns that set this boat apart from previous models. Decor was certainly consistent with the Fountaine Pajot (lightweight) way of thinking; a mix of practicality, serviceability and functionality with modulated light cherry wood panelling and furniture, leatherette upholstery, wood floors (maybe it was wood look-alike) and gelcoated wall and ceiling panels. The lifestyle was enhanced though, with the ‘living’ very much commencing the moment I entered through the two overlapping saloon doors which incidentally overlapped either to port or to starboard. To portside was a U-shaped dining setting which would very easily seat six adults, and opposite this the rather eye-catching galley. In the context of this being in the saloon, FP had done a brilliant job with presentation. And specification, for this galley boasted a servery bench, dishwasher, decent-sized sink, plenty of bench space, good cupboard and drawer storage, a 4-burner gas stove and below it – a real oven! And yes, there was even provision for a seemingly must-have convection microwave also, in the space atop the refrigeration module forward of the stove. The other seemingly obligatory item, the Panasonic 24-inch television with DVD, was sited just above this module. For me, this refrigeration aspect was a bit of a disappointment in that FP had seen fit to provide just one 120-litre refrigerator – aboard an ocean-going vessel! “That is done purposely.” Gold Coast Multihull Solutions representative John Gifford explained, “People have different ideas on what constitutes the ideal refrigeration package, so with the plethora of spaces available around the boat buyers can fit at the time of purchase – exactly want they want in the way of refrigeration and freezer capacity.” The galley and dining settings were cleverly designed so that the living area was nicely ‘distanced from both the helm and the two stairways to the accommodation below. The helm especially was I felt, a real statement; from a visibility perspective with its raised level; from a specification perspective with its competent array of Furuno electronics, Morse steering, Volvo remotes and digital engine read-out; and from an eye-catching presentation perspective with the chart table to the right of the skipper, a guest seat to the skippers left and a bulkhead top with fiddles around the perimeter. Other ‘special’ helm items or features that caught my eye were the nice wooden helm wheel, the grab rails beside the accommodation stairs, the map light on the dash, foot-rests for skipper and guest and the (good) natural ventilation (no air-conditioning on this model) courtesy of side opening windows, the overhead hatch and of course the overlapping aft saloon doors. Us…. and Them Below decks, the ‘private’ layout option consisted of the owner’s accommodation to starboard, “and whoever else comes along can fight over the other accommodation in the portside hull”. On this level, the perhaps more clinical ‘gelcoat and wood panelling’ look of above was replaced below by plush vinyl wall and ceiling panels, opening portholes and hatches, wall and overhead lighting, open pigeon hole storage lockers, hanging wardrobes and plenty of secreted storage provision. The portside accommodation consisted of an aft cabin of ‘double’ dimension. With a full wall to wall berth, this room was your typically aft cabin on a catamaran. Tastefully presented and with room to change with the door shut, the slight down side was the exterior overhead mouldings which impinged slightly on space within this cabin; not however to the point where it could/would be claustrophobic. The forward cabin was smaller in area than the owner’s cabin opposite, understandable and totally acceptable though when one considers the additional space the owner enjoyed. This port forward cabin can be a generous double or two singles, in this instance the owners opted for the ‘double’ wall to wall version. Offering some insight to the amount of space available in these two hulls, the central ‘house’ bathroom bisecting these two cabins boasted a shower cubicle at one end and head at the other, with a vanity in between. Again this portside accommodation was light, bright, comfortable and functional. The owner’s accommodation in the starboard hull was up a notch in presentation, not so much in appearance but certainly in space and specification. With an athwartships queen-size island berth in this instance, the forward master’s cabin also enjoyed sea views from the side porthole-style viewing window, plus a vanity for the ladies. Aft of the central stairs to this hull, the bathroom was more expansive than the portside example, but still it served the same function. What this side did have though, that the portside didn’t, was a utility room off this bathroom. As with the case of every facet of this boat, items can be modified, added or removed at the time of purchase; therefore items such as air-conditioning, laundry, Genset, water maker or dive compressor, and/or, a workshop, spare parts and/or food storage – could all be housed in this void which was accessed through the aft wall of this master head.

Love the Outdoors

From an outdoor living perspective the Summerland had it all; practical durable and appropriate in specification and appearance – without being flashy or overdone. Balancing the different areas of a boat are a headache for even the best of designers but in this instance Michel and Bernard got it dead right. The boarding platforms were appropriate – I loved the significantly high tunnel too – and the cockpit was uncluttered and deceptively roomy. The generous flybridge overhang only required the addition of an overhang extension and it would offer complete overhead protection from the elements – for six to eight people to enjoy late afternoon drinkies. Features here included a rear lounge recessed into the transom beam, tender davits mounted on the aft beam above the tunnel extension, a deck shower, aft mooring cleats, an extendable swim ladder and teak decking. This latter ‘optional’ feature was a must for it certainly transformed what would be a rather bland gelcoated cockpit area, into a very upmarket visual delight – a very prudent, sensible move! Moulded steps each side in the cockpit, complete with grab rails and a bowrail assembly which extended well aft, provided safe access to the foredeck area. This foredeck area I must say surprised me somewhat, for while it soaked up the full 5.45m beam, it was quite short in fore and aft dimension. Which I hasten to add I had absolutely no problem with – liked it in fact – for while there was still plenty of room for a sun-pad if required, the ‘trade-off’ of the forward helm and generally more depth in the saloon, was a far better option. The very serious Lofrans 1000W Cayman 88 windlass was secreted inside a deck locker, with the chain feeding through the inside of the deck to the under-deck permanently mounted Delta plough anchor. Nothing on deck, good!

On Top of the World

Another ‘big’ Summerland feature was the set of moulded stairs, complete with strategically-placed grab rail, which provided access to what was a most generous-sized open flybridge level. Again durable rather than pretentious and flashy, this was an area capable of accommodating 10 people. Yes, it was approved to carry that many, as dictated by MSA buoyancy and stability requirements/criteria. A bimini and set of clears were about to be fitted by Multihull Solutions, that would protect guests seated on the massive lounge to portside, opposite the skipper and friend seated on the bench style two-seater helm chair. This lounge continued on round the aft perimeter of this flybridge level, to form what was surely the world’s largest sun-lounger! Nicely protected from the weather by a sensible-height dodger, the helm itself was understandably not as comprehensive as the lower helm. Features included the steering and remote controls obviously, plus a compass, autopilot, Furuno FI-50 read-out and VHF. Importantly the bench seat, steering, remotes, foot-rest were all ergonomically ‘sited’ so as to maximise the comfort level on extended passages. Passages incidentally which were taken in their stride courtesy of the power of a pair of the new generation Volvo Penta D3-220i, common rail, fuel-injected 220hp, 5-cylinder, 2400cc diesel inboards through an HS63IVE (1.99:1 ratio) hydraulic V-drive gearbox and conventional shaft drive, to the Volvo Penta 4-blade propellers. With three recommended Volvo Penta power options available, 160hp, 190hp or 220hp, it came as no surprise that the top-of-the-line 220hp versions, albeit relatively meagre in 40ft cruiser terms, still managed to power the Summerland to a maximum top speed of 24 knots. As well as a snappy and accurate ride that offered a feel akin to ‘running’ on rails (without hull banging in a sea, thanks to the tunnel deck height), the real forte of this brand was its rather conspicuous efficiency characteristics. At the slow or eco cruise speed of 7.5 knots (10.6lph) the range was 990NM, at a fast cruise speed of 15 knots (40lph) the range was 525NM and even at the maximum 4000rpm at 24 knots (92lph), the range was 365NM.

The more I looked around this Fountaine Pajot Summerland 40 Trawler the more I came to appreciate its inherent qualities as a Bluewater cruiser. Tailor-made for charter that was not however, what this boat was initially designed for; it was quite simply the perfect non-glitzy, practical and efficient platform for the cruising sailor, with its sea-keeping capabilities and its efficiency obviated by the nearly-1000NM range. It was well thought out, well planned if you like, equipment was appropriate (or easily capable of being made appropriate, as in the case of refrigeration), nothing was surplus to requirements; quite simply it was what I would call a good wholesome boat, designed and built sensibly well, to last a long time! And the price; how many passage-making 40-footers present themselves with a price tag of $768,000, as tested?

Summerland 40 – Changing for the Better

Summerland 40

Founded in 1976 in France, Fountaine Pajot boatyard launched its first sail cruising catamaran in 1983 followed by the first power cruising catamaran in 1998 under the Trawler Catamarans brand. Designed by Joubert Nivelt, the Trawler Catamarans incorporate all the characteristics and qualities key to the success of its sail craft: comfort at sea and in port, seaworthiness and high performance.

Fountaine Pajot’s very distinctive sail and power catamaran ranges are instantly recognisable and in recent years have been seen more and more around the South Pacific. Imported and distributed throughout New Zealand and Australia by Multihull Solutions, the Fountaine Pajot power catamaran range has slowly been developing and today extends to three  models, with the Summerland 40 proving to be one of the  most popular.

Recently, the name Trawler Catamarans was dropped and  henceforth the power multihull range will be sold simply as Fountaine Pajot Motor Yachts. The first Summerland 40 was released in 2010 and while  externally it is still very much the same, the interior has come in for some upgrades and changes. Multihull Solutions’  Conrad Gair said that they listened to what local customers  had to say and tried to open the layout of the saloon up a lot  more, with a better focus on what the powerboat buyer was  after. While the Fountaine Pajot power and sail multihulls  are certainly very different in all aspects, there has been a  hint of more sailing yacht style interiors. However, with the  new Summerland 40 that has all changed.

“We needed to look more closely at the local market, because what is popular in terms of layout in Europe isn’t  always what our clients want in a boat in our waters”, says  Gair. “So in some ways the new style of the Summerland 40  has been brought about because of local influences and it’s  obvious from the reaction to the new styling, that we have  done it right,” he added.

At SCIBS, the company signed up four Summerland 40s including one to a Marlborough Sounds based client and  according to Gair they expected to confirm sales for a few more post-show. Considering they had only ever sold  three of the previous Summerland 40s, this has been a very positive outcome. “It was one of our best SCIBS ever and as far as the powerboat brand was concerned, the Summerland  40 hit the right spot”, he said.

What’s Changed

The 2013 Summerland 40 has a host of new features, including a newly designed saloon that provides 360-degree  visibility through panoramic windows. The interior of the  Summerland 40 is all matt finished oak, with no other timber  options. Light and fresh, the oak nicely accentuates the solid  surfaces and soft fabrics.

The port side cabinetry height in the saloon has been  lowered for better external viewing, plus the starboard side  dual fridge unit has been removed and repositioned. This has  resulted in more open space, improved integration of the  galley and cockpit areas, and additional storage space.

The well-appointed galley has plenty of cupboard space  and overlooks the light-filled saloon and dining area,  which comfortably seats up to eight guests. The galley now  features a Corian bench top with four-burner gas hob and  gas oven, with 120-litre fridge and provision for options such as a dishdrawer or convection microwave oven.

summerland 40 catamaran

Another change to the new model is the internal helm  station facia, which has been lowered to improve forward  viewing. The helm station features a sleek console and plenty  of space is provided for at least a pair of large MFD screens. The central steering station can be flanked by as many  accessories as you feel you need, with the factory offering  both Raymarine and Garmin. In our test boat that included a  pair of Garmin 5008 F150 and 5012 screens, ICOM VHF and  Volvo electronic controls.

Seating is minimal, with a single swivelling helm chair with a moulded footrest for your comfort and an additional passenger side seat. Quite a nice feature if you have to spend  long periods at the helm. A strategically-positioned porthole  provides optimal ventilation. The generous navigation table is large enough for multiple charts and paperwork to be  unfurled without clutter.

You may question the need for such a full bodied downstairs helm station, now that the Summerland 40 has a more enclosed flybridge, but as Gair points out, this is a true passagemaker and at times the comfort of the downstairs area may just be the right place to be in bad weather.

“Because this is a bluewater boat and designed to do passages such as across the Tasman or over to the Islands,  the downstairs is nice when you are short-handed”, says Gair. He adds that on a recent trip to Sydney from the Gold  Coast, he drove the boat for most of the 500 miles from the downstairs station.

Three Cabins –Two Heads

With the standard version offering three cabins and two heads, the Summerland 40 is surely going to find its way  in the growing powercat charter fleets in New Zealand and more directly The Whitsundays. The Summerland 40 also boasts an exclusive owners’ suite on the starboard hull, furnished with a raised queen-sized  island bed affording full walk around status, huge storage  space, office desk, dressing table and a private bathroom.

In the port hull, guests can relax in privacy and tranquillity, with two separate cabins featuring double or twin beds,  shelves, bathroom and ample storage space for convenience  on extended cruises.

Ventilation comes via opening deck hatches, with a fixed hull side teardrop port in each forward cabin providing extra  natural light. Air conditioning is optional. A little hidden gem has to be the utility or work room, which is accessed aft of the starboard bathroom. It’s a great place for the washer/dryer and a place to keep your tools and service equipment for those extended voyages. Originally,  this was designed as the generator room, but with the new compact versions, the genset can now be fitted into one of  the engine rooms, thereby freeing up a lot of extra space.

All of the cabins have been upgraded with premium quality finishes and fixtures, and the flybridge has been revised to optimise spaciousness, including a fixed GRP hardtop and enclosed flybridge with Strataglass clears.

More Enclosed

Access to the flybridge is via a wide, moulded stairway that has handholds excellently placed. While you still have the choice of a soft top foldaway canopy, the obvious choice for local buyers will certainly be the new Australian designed and manufactured fibreglass hardtop with Strataglass clears. At the helm, you have a choice of the standard bench seat or twin chairs. The standard layout comes with a three cushion daybed aft, but on our test boat this has been cut out to give 30% extra floor space. The port side U-shaped lounger will  easily seat a dozen people and a drop-in GRP table, the same one as used in the cockpit, can be deployed when required.  There is also a convenient, compact fridge to keep a few cold ones at the ready.

The upstairs helm is equipped with just the necessary instrumentation and electronics, such as a Garmin 8” MFD, so you can still drive from here and carry out all necessary functions.

Enlarged Cockpit

While our test boat was fitted with rear sliding glass doors, future models will have triple concertina doors to open up  the entrance even more. Designed for optimal safety and  comfort, the deck spaces are ergonomic and obstacle-free,  providing easy access to all areas. There are steps either side of a central transom seat / storage / barbecue module to  the twin boarding platforms and a telescopic stainless steel  ladder for water access. A locally fitted option is the soft top overhang extension, which helps shade out the sun without  getting in the way of rods while fishing.

Further changes are planned in the evolution of the Summerland 40, with the rear seat module moved further  aft, almost doubling the floor space of the cockpit. Also, with a solid GRP hardtop extension (in place of the soft-top) now  available, you can use a davit crane to lift your tender up and stow it safely aft of the flybridge. Currently the only option  is to store the tender on transom davits.

Designed for Efficiency

Designed by Coste & Partners under the architectural guidance of Joubert/Nivelt, the Summerland 40 also boasts a generous freeboard and high bridge deck clearance to provide a quiet and dry ride in most sea  conditions. The hull design offers a dry deck at sea and a  stable ride with minimal bounce and roll in dangerous and  uncomfortable conditions.

The Summerland 40 is based on a semi-displacement  hull design, which results in a maximum amount of the  hull in the water at higher speeds, softening the ride and  reducing stress on the hull from wave impact.  Gair sees semi displacement powercats as the future in  power multihulls and points out that while you can still do 24 knots in this boat, it remains fuel efficient right  throughout the range.

While my short time aboard was confined to the calm waters of the Broadwater, I did get the opportunity to  speak to one of the new owners of a Summerland 40 who had gone ‘outside” for his trial run. His report was  of a boat that surprised his expectations and performed  exceedingly well, given the huge white-capping swells.

Gair reports that on a delivery trip down to Sydney, with a 3m head sea most of the way down the coast, he sat the cat on 17 knots for almost the entire 500NM journey. It was a non-stop trip that saw the twin 220hp Volvo Penta  D3s burn a total of 1200 litres.

Power options are limited to the twin 5-cylinder 220mhp D3 or the twin four-cylinder 260mhp D4 units. While  the bigger 3.7-litre D4 is a slower revving engine with maximum power at 3500rpm compared to the 2.4-litre  D3 which runs out to 4000 rpm, the weight difference is  a substantial 514kg in total (301kg for each D3 compared to 558kg for each D4).

That’s a lot of extra weight in the sterns, but while the big-volume semi-displacement hulls are more than capable of handling the added weight, I question if it would really be any advantage. Yes, you can probably cruise at lower rpm and the top speed would increase by a few knots, but for me, the D3-220s are a perfect match.

Top speed with the D3-220s running through shaft drives is around 24 knots for a fuel burn of 45L/h per engine. Drop back to 17 knots at 3000 rpm and the fuel burn is 20L/h per engine with an impressive range of 595NM.

Future Evolution

But wait – there’s more! The revitalised Summerland 40 is due in time to be re-released as the Summerland 40  Evolution, which will be an amalgam of all the changes to date and then some. However, this will not happen until  late 2013 and the changes from what we are told will be subtle but significant. Also there is a possibility of a sport version of the Summerland 40, which Gair says has already  attracted a considerable amount of interest, especially for  those people who have a bridge clearance height issue.

Given the huge available flat surface area of a sedan version, this also brings in the possibility of solar powered  hybrid engines. Another bonus of buying from Multihull Solutions a Fountaine Pajot vessel such as the Summerland 40 is that  you can take delivery in Europe and enjoy a few seasons boating around the Med, before shipping, or in the larger  versions motoring, it home. According to Gair there are also  a lot of cost benefits over the initial advertised price, which makes this a very attractive option.

Fountaine Pajot Summerland 40

  • Motor Boat & Yachting | Fountaine Pajot Summerland 40

One of the safest, most practical three-cabin cruisers on the market

Fountaine Pajot seemingly have the market to themselves – when looking for rivals for this boat it proved near impossible to find a mainstream catamaran alternative. This is their chance then to take the market by the scruff of the neck and produce a cat that can really take the fight to its monohull counterparts.

The owner’s cabin takes up the entire starboard hull and guests are catered for across two cabins in the port hull. They’re not especially luxurious but headroom is great and there’s a lot of storage across all three sleeping areas.

In terms of space there is a strange dichotomy – the aft cockpit is big enough to host a tennis tournament but you won’t be swinging your racket in the saloon. It’s not bad, it just doesn’t feel spacious enough when you consider the boat is 17ft 9in (5.40m) wide.

Out on the water ride comfort is superb and the Summerland 40 shows a very meagre thirst too – at 7.5 knots you’ll be able to do 1,000 miles on a tank of diesel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJqAaZht_o4&hl=en_GB&fs=1

  • Excellent ride, headroom, storage, stability, fuel efficiency, spacious owner's cabin, safe side decks
  • Lack of handholds, sparsely fitted-out flybridge, lack of attention to detail in some areas

The Fountaine-Pajot Summerland 40 is designed as a modern efficient cruising trawler with comfort and range in mind. Compared to a traditional trawler the FP Summerland’s catamaran hull design ensures approximately 40% less fuel consumption, in addition to great stability under navigation or while moored.  Going up to the flybridge with curved staircase offers great visibility and room for entertaining for 10 with 2 captain helm seats, L-shaped settee and sunbathing/sofa configuration.

The living area is defined between the bright spacious saloon and galley, lower helm with large windows offering panoramic views and dining area with isolated pasageways for privacy in the cabins.  The master suite is in the Starboard hull with a queen berth with direct ocean views from the bed, ample closet and storage space, desk area and en-suite head and shower with the full guest areas and 2nd head in the port hull. Low Fuel Consumption

The Fountaine Pajot’s outstandingly low fuel consumption is a primary attraction for many buyers who recognize the savings represented by the vessels’ long range. The boat offers a minimum of 40 percent reduction in fuel consumption when compared to the performance of a similarly-sized mono-hull.

The reduced drag created by the two hulls plus the efficient wave-piercing action contributes to greatly reduced rates of consumption, and extended range – up to one thousand miles with standard fuel tanks.

The FP Power Cats are renowned for their superior performance in challenging conditions, while maintaining excellent stability and comfort while underway. Higher speeds are achievable in tough conditions due to the boat’s semi-displacement hull design. More of the hull remains in the water at higher speeds, softening the ride and reducing stress on the hull from wave impact.

FP Power Cats offer generous freeboard with reinforced hulls and bows to handle the toughest offshore conditions. The hull design offers an impressively dry deck at sea and a stable ride with minimal bounce and roll in dangerous and uncomfortable conditions. Unlike many of its competitors, these vessels are pleasantly quiet, with engines housed with their own dedicated access. Protection and Visibility

Each of the FP power cat models enjoys excellent protection from the natural elements. The 360 degree vision from the flybridge is also complemented by panoramic views from the interior cockpit, creating a light, ambient and safe experience particularly during extended passages.

Ergonomic and safe design

All of the FP power cats deck surfaces have been designed to be kept clear of obstructions, creating the safest environment for both cruising and relaxing at anchor. From boarding on the float-through transom, moving into the spacious and ergonomic cockpit, on to the square and the foredeck, moving about a motor yachts is a safe and easy experience. The boats are also equipped with superior quality steel stanchions and belting, providing optimal security for moving about on deck. Unsinkability and beach ability FP power cats have been designed to sit on their hulls without any damage to her propellers, shafts and rudders due to fixed skegs. These skegs are also designed to protect the propellers, shafts and rudders and preserve the safety of the vessel in the event of an impact at sea. Twin engines in separate hulls offer peace of mind in the event of a hull taking on water due to grounding or a collision. This is a feature not possible in a mono-hull without major engineering works.

Innovative, spacious and thoughtful designs Separation of living areas each power cat has been designed to separate the social and private areas for optimal space and serenity. Socializing and entertaining can be enjoyed in the spacious saloon and galley, which feature panoramic views, quality furnishings, abundant storage and easy integration of lounge and cockpit areas. The main decks are designed on one level so no steps up or down are required for entry from the cockpit to the main saloon.

Tranquil and private cabins Cabins for the owner and crew are very private due to the twin hulls, with no single bulkheads required between the cabins. Fore and aft cabin arrangements can offer true three or four double cabin versions without compromising space and storage. On every model, the cabins enjoy generous dimensions, great headroom, wide passageways, and are situated well away from the engine rooms, ensuring they are quiet and fume-free retreats. The cabins feature excellent ventilation systems and natural lighting, courtesy of the generous portholes. There is also spacious access to the large beds with the benefits of en-suite bathrooms. Maestro version (3 cabin owner’s version) Offering the ultimate in privacy for both owners and guests, the Maestro version is offered on all models in the power cat range. This design, which dedicates an entire hull for owner’s private use, is the result of extensive research and development in conjunction with consultants, architects and manufacturers.

Passageways Unlike many catamarans, FP power cat’s corridors have been designed to maximize width and height in the interior passageways, and stair dimensions have also been set at a safe and comfortable level to suit both adults and children.

Manufactured to highest standards

Fixed fins these vessels are fitted with fixed fins to maximize comfort and safety. In the event of an impact or beaching, the fixed fins serve to protect the propellers, shaft and rudders, and they completely seal and preserve the integrity of the vessel. The benefits of fixed fins include total security, convenience for maintenance, and greater flexibility to explore and anchor in more shallow waters.

COMMENTS Low fuel consumption The Fountaine Pajot’s outstandingly low fuel consumption is a primary attraction for many buyers who recognize the savings represented by the vessels’ long range.

Protection and visibilityEach of the FP Power Cat models enjoys excellent protection from the natural elements. The 360 degree vision from the flybridge is also complemented by panoramic views from the interior cockpit, creating a light, ambient and safe experience particularly during extended passages. Ergonomic and safe design All of The FP Power Cats deck surfaces have been designed to be kept clear of obstructions, creating the safest environment for both cruising and relaxing at anchor.

5. Manufactured to highest standards Fixed fins These vessels are fitted with fixed fins to maximize comfort and safety.

Summerland 40

The summerland 40 is a trawler catamaran from the well-pedigreed stable of fountaine pajot; the name says it all but you need to look closer to appreciate their efforts.

LIKES - Very quiet underway - Good manoeuvrability underway and when docking - Spacious living and cabin areas

DISLIKES - Would have like a roomier bathroom for the owners cabin - More fridge space as standard is require on boat of this calibre

OVERVIEW -- Big on work and play Spacious living areas on a 40 footer of any description usually come at a price. That price is cramped quarters, pokey helm stations, companion ways that can only be traversed by shuffling like a crab; sideways that is, and a general claustrophobic environment.

Exotic yacht builder Fountaine Pajot has put paid to that perception with its Summerland 40; designed by Coste & Partners under the architectural guidance of Joubert/Nivelt. It’s big on work and play areas with large well appointed cabins and an entertaining flybridge. Just the place for a sunset cocktail party or time out sanctuary from the rest of the crew.

PRICE AND EQUIPMENT -- plenty of fuel and water As tested with options the Summerland 40 came in at $760,000.

Navigation is via a 10” Furuno Navnet chart plotter/depth sounder and an autopilot is wired at both helms.

A pair of 700-litre diesel tanks with individual starboard/port fuel line circuits are installed with an electric gauge and indicator wired to the chart table at the helm.

Plumbing-wise the Summerland features a 600-litre freshwater tank with pressurised storage and a 40-litre water heater. The holding tank is 50-litres with pump-out facility on the starboard side with the option to pump to sea when in a suitable area.

Automatic bilge pumps are fitted to each engine hold and both hulls with full 12-volt circuitry including 240v inverters.

LAYOUT AND ACCOMMODATION -- Plenty of space, light and airy The boarding platform has a gate to the cockpit each side of an island lounge mid beam. Here, the boat cleaning kit is stored under the cushions out of sight and mind.

The large saloon door slides to port and the port half is unlockable to allow it to be centred so draft may flow down that side of the saloon over the rear of the dining lounge.

Once inside, the galley is located in the aft starboard corner. It features a single sink and draining board and a four-burner gas-fired cooker. A vertical bin is accessed in the bench top and the garbage bag under its lid is extracted from the side of the galley module near the saloon door.

A low-set 130-litre fridge services the galley and will need to be optioned up or complimented with another if you are looking at extended cruising. One of the future options on this boat is a freezer on the deck aft of the portside saloon door.

There is no shortage of drawers in the galley with larger units for pots and pans. There is no dishwasher installed but like most other aspects of the Summerland 40 the options are endless.

The picture windows are fixed toughened glass but each side window has a sturdy waterproof porthole for ventilation.

The fixed furniture in the saloon is generally square shaped but some effort has been put into getting rid of the hard lines by sloping the vertical sides of the cabinets and rounding the corners off.  It looks quite smart.

The dining suite is an eight-seater in a long ‘U’ shape bench with ample table space and in close proximity to the galley for food service.

The fixed furniture mid saloon all but partitions off the helm but there is clearance above it to keep the saloon open and aired.

That helm is situated mid ships with a neat console and a chatty passenger seat with footrest to port of the main pedestal seat.

Even though the front window panes are high set, the skipper has safe vision forward and to beam from his seating position. The smaller central pane is equipped with a wiper blade whilst that each side sweeps around in a stylish curve.

Large flat tops surround the leather padded helm instrument panel brow to allow charts and other paperwork to be spread out and a porthole in the roof above the helm chair pumps plenty of fresh air down on the skipper and through the saloon.

From the centre island one steps down into the portside cabin area.

A crew bed of standard double size runs aft off the entrance at which a small washroom is situated. Another slightly larger berth runs forward from this entrance and it is well appointed with shelves manufactured with high front lips to retain quite a bit of reading material and chart work if required.

In the opposite hull a large owner’s bedroom is situated featuring a queen-sized island bed with step up each side. There is a very roomy walkway past the foot of the bed at the end of which is a large locker leading into bulk stowage space in the hull.

A small office desk is situated against the cabin liner and the chair for it is held in the aforementioned locker.

While the main cabin is big on room, some of it could have been used to expand the size of the ensuite that services it. It is all very functional but cramped for space. A hatch in the bulkhead behind the head leads into more stowage space; on this model, the place where the fluxgate is mounted.

An arced staircase leads up to the flybridge from the cockpit. This area may be closed off with a hardened glass hatch operated via a gas strut.

The flybridge has a queen-size sun lounge with a guard rail surround on the aft and port side and a padded backrest on posts may be positioned on the starboard side or aft for lounging purposes.

The helm seat is double bench style and an aft facing passenger seat is to the portside. From the helm in the flybridge the skipper has excellent vision of the bow, though the stern is out of sight when standing at the wheel.

MECHANICAL AND HULL -- Good access to mechanicals The cockpit length fore and aft is short but serviceable with teak deck inlaid. A hatch either side gives easy and ready access to the engines.

A pair of 220hp D3 turbo five-cylinder Volvo engines are fitted along with electronic throttles and complete control panels at both the saloon helm and flybridge. Shafts are direct drive with four-blade propellers aft of sacrificial protective keels.

With the cockpit engine hatches open one may enter the hold and stand on a grate above the turning shafts. A slide-in partition shields one from the rotating components at the aft of the engine and access to oil dip stick is within reach.

Should the engines have to be lifted out they are unbolted and slid back over the grate and pulled out of the hold without the need to cut and shut superstructure.

ON THE WATER -- Let's go cruising! The Summerland 40 is impressively quiet when underway. The powerplants are well suited to this application with good torque throughout the throttle range and I found that there is minimal vibration and flexing when cutting across wash at an angle.

Manoeuvrability is also excellent both at speed going forward, going astern as well as during docking. In fact after throwing the lines at Runaway Bay I was convinced this boat was armed with substantial bow thrusters! That was not the case.

At 22 knots the Volvo’s are ticking over at 3800rpm and at a cruise of 18 knots they are turning at 2500rpm.  For economical long hauling, 15.5 knots will have the rpm at 1850.

The Summerland 40 is one very big package inside a relatively small hull with a matching price tag. It will represent excellent value for those wanting to wile away the hours along the coast or protected broad waters and do it in style.

RATINGS Overall rating: 4.7/5.0 Mechanical and hull: 4.8/5.0 Packaging and practicality:4.8/5.0 On the water performance: 4.9/5.0 Value for money: 4.9/5.0 X-factor: 4.6/5.0

Specifications – Summerland 40 Price: $760,000 Overall length: 11.98m (39.3ft) Overall beam: 5.45m (17.8ft) Draft: 1.10m (3.6ft) Displacement: 9800kg Engines: Volvo 220hp D3 turbo x 2 Water: 600 litres Fuel: 1400 litres Holding tank: 50 litres Berths: 3 x double Cabins: 3

Journey Maker – Fountaine Pajot Summerland 40 LC

Journey Maker – Fountaine Pajot Summerland 40 LC

November 19, 2014 8:44 am

The summerland my 40 lc is a boat designed for enjoying coastal jaunts with lots of onboard space and cruising efficiency. and she happens to be a power catamaran..

Builder : Fountaine Pajot Model : Fountaine Pajot Summerland 40 LC Year : 2014 Boat Type : Catamaran LOA : 39’3″ Beam : 17’8″ Draft : 3’6″ Base Price : $532,226

The Miami sky was turning from black to the warm blue of morning as the sun began to peek over the horizon. The Miami Boat Show was over and we were leaving, making the way down Indian Creek onboard a new Summerland MY 40 LC powercat , moving quietly in single file with a handful of other boats looking to get an early morning start, resembling a nautical platoon on some pre-dawn patrol. While settled into the after section of the flying bridge’s L-shaped settee, with Capt. James Fachtmann taking us out to Biscayne Bay, a couple things came to mind. First, the sorry recognition that there is virtually nowhere on Collins Avenue to get a coffee at 4:45 in the morning, and second, the fond remembrance of numerous offshore passages made in the past, complete with the gentle hum of an engine and the slap of the sea.

Turns out this is an appropriate feeling when you’re on one of Foutaine Pajot’s powercats . The company, founded in 1976 in La Rochelle, France, by well-known competitive sailor Jean-Francois Fountaine, has been a longtime player in the sailing catamaran market , boats designed to comfortably cruise the world. Since 1998, however, the company has also been building powercats—vessels that were originally branded “Trawler Catamarans” and continue to live up to the name to this day. The ace in the hole for these boats is the living space and stability, thanks to the catamaran design, giving them the same desirable features for coastal cruising that many charter fleets obviously appreciate. And when the anchor goes down, the party starts up, with plenty of room for friends on this wide platform. They also cruise efficiently—is it any wonder catamarans are beginning to get the serious consideration that smart design helps them deserve? The Summerland 40 MY LC is the smallest vessel in the company’s power-cat range ( though not for long, see “The Newest Member of the Family,” below ) and, as you’d expect, embodies the traits of both a seaworthy, oceangoing trawler, and a well-built, comfortable catamaran.

Her layout is a pleasing one, simple, yet with several shippy elements that remind you this boat is meant to roam. A seamanlike bucket chair (built in-house) sits behind the centerline helm, a command station that would please any skipper. Again, simple, but with everything you need when you decide to cruise without the wind in your hair—a Garmin chartplotter, engine-control levers, Volvo Penta readouts, VHF, and all of your electrics switches. Sightlines were good all around thanks to large windows. There were also plenty of flat surfaces around the helm for a navigator to use paper charts (still an onboard preference for many cruisers), with fiddle-like table-top recesses that help things stay put in a sea. There were also fiddles atop the Elba propane stove in the galley, aft to starboard, in addition to enough counter space and stowage (plenty of cabinets to starboard as well as a stacked set of Isotherm refridgerator/freezer drawers to port) to craft an actual meal.

FP 40 Interior

These seaworthy design touches continued throughout the rest of the boat. The hydraulic steering system on the boat featured a hydraulic backup that would, in the case of an emergency, allow the hydraulic steering pressure to be brought to zero so that the skipper can steer the vessel using an emergency tiller. A smart feature and clearly one that draws on the company’s sailing roots.

Another nice aspect of the Summerland 40 LC is the reassuring amount of equipment that stateside cruisers will find fairly standard —Racor fuel filters, Vetus fuel-water separators, Exide batteries, a Fusion stereo system, a top-of-the-line Victron Energy Multiplus Compact Inverter, a Cummins Onan generator, and more. So whether you find yourself with a chartplotter problem in Canada, or an engine problem in St. Thomas, getting parts and service shouldn’t be too much of an issue and, while the English-French labels on some components are gentle reminders of the boats lineage, you won’t find yourself scratching your head trying to figure out what’s what.

Belowdecks, two queen berths, one forward and one aft of a shared head, fill the port hull, and the starboard hull features a master stateroom worthy of the name and a large head. There is plenty of stowage throughout both areas, in hanging lockers and elsewhere. A “technical room” that can be accessed via a door in the after end of the master head. It was in this well-lit room where the generator, the holding tank (made from just see-through material so you can quickly check the level at a glance), a Vetus fuel-water separator, and the hydraulic pump were housed.

Once we’d dealt with the bridge, as well as all the traffic jams that always seem to accompany leaving a boat show, we made our way across Biscayne Bay to the Miami Beach Marina to fuel up before doing our speed runs in Government Cut. Each hull on our test boat housed a 150-horsepower Volvo Penta D3 diesel installed on beefy, vibration-reducing engine mounts, a PuraFiner diesel filtration unit, a large Exide starting battery (with the main breaker and house batteries in the starboard hull), and nearly 2 inches of SoundDown insulation that keeps the engines whisper quiet while you’re cruising. The areas are fairly spartan, but clean, and well lit. Another design element that points to the seamanlike quality of the Summerland are fiberglass moldings around the engine-room day hatches that keep out the sea but are removable if you need to get down there while you are underway.

Running the Summerland was a real pleasure. That early dawn had turned into a perfect South Florida day, and as we ran her up and down Government Cut to get our speed numbers, that seat at the upper helm station was the only place in Miami I wanted to be. Throughout the entire rpm range the Summerland was quiet and the ride was comfortable, with a maximum running attitude of only 4 degrees at just over 14 knots with the pins down. Her comparatively deep gear ratio of 2.49:1 generates lots of torque, and you can really feel the props bite when you shift into gear, whether forward or astern.

One element of the upper and lower helm that is worth mentioning here is the engine-control binnacle—it was installed at an angle rather than on a level surface. This may trip up a helmsmen, at least until he gets used to the configuration because, when the levers were pointing straight up, the engines were not in neutral, as you might think, but still powering very quietly and stealthily forward. This is a minor design element though, and to help the “straight means neutral” helmsman, Volvo Penta has lights on the binacle that indicate forward, reverse, and neutral.

With the numbers gathered and our fueling and speed runs done, we pointed the boat out of the inlet and into the deep-blue waters of the Florida coast. Seas didn’t amount to much on our test day, but what there was the Summerland handled with ease-—everywhere on the boat the motion was quite comfortable. We put her into the waves, carved some S-turns and figure eights, and pointed her back toward land. And that is the true allure of the Summerland MY 40 LC. She is a boat meant to cruise, like a thoroughbred is meant to run or a Labrador meant to retrieve. She beckons you to leave the harbor, to throw that waypoint on the plotter and just go. Who needs a coffee?

The Newest Member of the Family – Fountaine Pajot MY 37

F_37

The Summerland 40 LC is soon to have a new little sister, one that measures around 36 feet. The company has announced that it will be launching the new Fountaine Pajot MY 37 May 2015 in the south of France. This will give the company “A real range of motoryachts,” says Flagship manager Yves de Kerangat, “with four models we will really give an alternative to the monoull motoryacht market.” Could this point the way toward more hulls on more vessels throughout the industry? Only time will tell. But if the Fountaine Pajot powercats are pointing the way to the passagemaking future, that might be a bright future indeed.

Customer Reviews

summerland 40 catamaran

We hired Tiger Lily for 7 days over the December 2017 school holidays, was such a great experience, friendly helpful staff, huge thanks to Peter and all staff at Whitsunday Escape - cannot recommend enough. Definately want to come back for another trip. The whitsundays is such a beautiful and amazing place especially on a self drive boat. Too many places to explore - not enough time. Huge thanks to all those at Whitsunday Escape - we will be back. Again highly recommend anyone that wants a great experience to use Whitsunday Escape - thanks guys.

summerland 40 catamaran

I cannot say enough positive things about Whitsunday Escape. I took my family (wife and 2 kids - 6 and 4 years old) on a 7 night adventure that created memories that will last a life time. We traveled from New York to visit the Whitsundays islands and all while choosing the correct boat (Tiger Lily - 40ft power cat), the staff at WE were extremely knowledgeable and accommodating to our needs. Everything was arranged and now all we had to do was get there. We traveled for 32 hours but finally made it and the welcome was overwhelming. They understood we were tired, the boat was moored close by in the Marina, the boat was in A1 condition and everything was perfect, even the weather was perfect. The next day at 7.30am our provisions arrived, all to the exact match of what we had ordered. Our trainer or expert, also known as Shano, came on board at 8am to give us our overview - he was patient, understanding of the kids and filled us with confidence that we could drive the boat, navigate the islands and have an amazing experience. Each day was filled with new adventures that you just don't see by going to any resort on earth and believe me, we have been to a fair few around the world. At the end, all was perfect, we had a great time, experienced the boating life and will never look back. We can't wait to go again. So much so that we are recommending this to all our friends, some of which have already booked their 2018 trip - which I am sure will be perfect. Keep up the great work Whitsunday Escape.
