The 2020/21 Vendée Globe finish goes to the wire: Dalin first to cross the line with several boats still in with a chance of taking the title overnight, but Herrmann out of contention after crashing into a fishing boat in the final hours

There is no such thing as an ‘easy’ Vendée Globe . It is, rightly, considered to be one of the very toughest sporting challenges in the world, and the 2020/2021 edition of the Vendée has been no exception.

But whilst a clear home run can never be taken for granted in the Vendée Globe, never has there been a finish quite like this one. For much of the final day of racing, no fewer than five skippers were still in the running for victory, with Charlie Dalin on  Apivia , Boris Herrmann on  Seaexplorer – Yacht Club De Monaco , Louis Burton on  Bureau Vallée 2 , Thomas Ruyant on  LinkedOut and Yannick Bestaven Maitre Coq IV  all within touching distance of the greatest prize in ocean sailing: to be named the Vendée Globe winner.

After 80 days of racing, the solo around the world race came down to the type of margin you might expect in a coastal race: with just a couple of hours between the top three. Having variously thrashed and nursed their boats – and themselves – around 24,000 miles of the most remote oceans in the world, the 2020/21 Vendée Globe finished with all the intensity of a Figaro stage where podium places could be decided by a single shift.

And so it was fitting that the first boat across the line was Figaro graduate Charlie Dalin on Apivia , who finished in 8d 6h 15m. Dalin, 36, has raced a masterful first Vendée Globe, leading for 37 days in total. He has kept his new Verdier-designed Apivia right on the red line, balancing his Figaro-style intensity of racing with just enough caution to keep the distinctive yellow and black boat on its feet despite damage to the port foil back in mid- December.

Even the Vendée Globe’s expert meteorologist, Christian Dumard, was reluctant to call which boat would be in the top three places this morning, so tight were the margins with a single layline or gybe likely to determine the distance. Dalin took a southerly route through Biscay, sailing waters that will be familiar to him from his Figaro career whilst also trying to maximise time on his favoured port gybe. He crossed the line shortly after 1940 on Wednesday night, only then coming out of his protected cockpit to celebrate.

Previous Vendée Globe winners are usually able to relish their final approach to the French Atlantic town of Les Sables d’Olonne, coming on deck to wave to an appreciative on the water spectator fleet. Not so Dalin, for whom every minute of racing counted. He might have had the finish line in his sights, but Dalin has been racing against the clock since December 16. Despite being the first boat to cross the line, he had no guarantee that he would become the eventual winner of the race. (article continues below)

You can follow the final hours of the race via the event tracker.

A complex Vendée Globe finish

On November 20,  Kevin Escoffier’s PRB suddenly and catastrophically broke up . The bow of PRB  sheared off as Escoffier surfed a large wave, the boat snapping in two and sinking within seconds. Escoffier was left drifting 850 miles south-west of Cape Town in a liferaft and survival suit, without his sat phone or VHF.

vendee globe yacht race

Unusually for that stage of the Vendée Globe, there were several skippers within close range of PRB’s position, and four were requested to suspend racing and divert to assist the search and rescue operation. Escoffier was thankfully picked up by veteran Vendée sailor, Jean Le Cam, after around 11 hours.

The four sailors who were involved – including Boris Herrman, Yannick Bestaven, Jean Le Cam and Sebastien Simon (who later retired) were awarded redress by the jury on December 16 for the time and extra miles they lost during the search. Critically, Herrmann was awarded 6 hours, Bestaven 10h 15m, and Le Cam 16h 15. As soon as Dalin crossed the finish line, a new stopwatch started to see if Bestaven or Herrman could overtake him by their time advantage.

Crash in the night

However, events took a radical turn just before 2000hrs when news came in that Boris Herrmann, who was in 3rd place and still well within his six-hour margin to overtake Dalin, had collided with a fishing boat some 90 miles from the Vendée Globe finish.

Herrmann was unhurt, but reported damage to the starboard foil. His boat speeds on  SeaExplorer-Yacht Club de Monaco plummeted from high teens to just 7 knots, and although he continued sailing to Les Sables the chances to become the first non-French winner of the Vendée Globe was ebbing away.

The second skipper home was Louis Burton, who finished four hours after Dalin in 80d 10h 25m. Burton’s  Bureau Vallée 2 was the winner of the previous Vendée Globe, Armel Le Cleac’h’s Banque Populaire VIII.  Burton’s team bought the boat before it had even reached home in 2017, giving the 35-year-old skipper a full four year preparation for his third Vendée attempt.

Despite being of a previous generation design,  Bureau Vallée 2  has demonstrated lightning speed at times during the race, Burton pushing hard to make up 650 miles to catch the leaders in the Atlantic. However, he has picked up no fewer than three time penalties over the course of the race, including one for being OCS at the start, and battled a series of repairs, at one stage even pulling into the lee of the remote Macquarie Island in the south-west Pacific to fix his mast track.

All eyes now turn to Yannick Bestaven, who is steaming into Les Sables at 18-20 knots in 4th place with a 10-hour time advantage due to the redress. His is now the best chance of snatching victory from Dalin at the Vendée Globe finish. Bestaven must finish before 0550 (UTC) on Thursday 28 January in order to take the win.

Vendée Globe 2024

Le Vendée Globe

The Vendée Globe is a single-handed, non-stop, unassisted round-the-world race. Skippers sail about 45,000 kilometres around the globe, braving the most fearsome seas and the most extreme weather conditions. The competition takes place every four years, starting in Les Sables-d'Olonne, in Vendée, and passes through three emblematic capes: the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin and finally Cape Horn. The race is sailed on a 60-foot monohull called an IMOCA. For 2024, the number of participants is limited to 40.

See the Vendée Globe website

Vendée Globe 10ème édition

Last qualifying race for the Vendée Globe

To take part in the Vendée Globe, the skipper and boat pairing must be qualified. This not only attests to the sailor's skills and the reliability of their project, but also guarantees that their boats have been sufficiently tested to complete a round-the-world race.

Each skipper must be at the start of at least two qualifying races on his IMOCA boat (including one in 2022 or 2023 and one in 2024). He must finish at least one of them and his race time can't be over one and a half times longer than the winner's time.

If more than 40 candidates meet the qualifying conditions, a selection will be made, based on the number of miles raced since 2021. The New York Vendée - Les Sables d'Olonne is the last qualifying and selection race before the Vendée Globe, hence its crucial importance! To add a little more spice to the competition, 1 mile sailed on the New York Vendée will count 1.5 miles for the selection.

Vendee-Globe-Race-Map.jpg

A 24,000 mile race, circumnavigating the world, non-stop & alone.

60ft high performance racing yachts. The world’s most elite offshore racers. The earth’s most hostile environments.

The Vendée Globe is a single-handed (solo) non-stop yacht race around the world without assistance. The race was founded by Philippe Jeantot in 1989, and since 1992 has taken place every four years. It is named after the Département of Vendée, in France, where the race starts and ends. The Vendée Globe is considered an extreme quest of individual endurance and the ultimate test in ocean racing.

Since its inception in 1989, fewer than 100 international skippers have completed the race. By comparison, that is less than 3% of the total number of people who have climbed Everest! (5000 climbers) Only 7 women in history, and fewer than 10 British skippers in total have ever finished the race.

“It is one of the greatest sporting challenges on earth, arguably the greatest. And I’m not done with it yet.”

Vendée Globe 2020 - Everything you need to know

Sailing's ultimate test begins off the west coast of France on Sunday with the 33 solo competitors bidding to go non-stop around the world.

Stephane Le Diraison on board Time For Oceans trains ahead of the 2020-21 Vendee Globe

The Vendée Globe is the ultimate test in ocean sailing .

Held every four years, it is a non-stop solo round the world yacht race starting and finishing at Les Sables D'Olonne on the west coast of France.

The 2020-21 epic begins on Sunday (8 November) and you can watch the start - now closed to the public after France enforced stricter Covid measures last week - live on Olympic Channel .

A record 33 boats will set off on an arduous and at times dangerous journey which, barring accidents, will take between 70 and 130 days and cover a total distance of 45,000km (28,000 miles).

Olympic Channel will bring you weekly highlights and live coverage as the first boats arrive back to shore at Les Sables D'Olonne.

Vendée Globe 2020 start, route and rules

The Vendée Globe starts in the Vendée region of France and, like the Volvo Ocean Race , takes the clipper route of circumnavigation used by ships carrying goods between Europe and the Far East and Oceania.

This is the fastest round-the-world route starting out in the Atlantic towards the Cape of Good Hope south of Africa and then travelling east through the Southern Ocean making use of the 'Roaring Forties' winds found at latitudes of between 40 and 50 degrees.

The fleet then passes by Cape Horn at the south tip of South America before tacking north back to where they started.

The yachts are all monohulls conforming to the IMOCA 60 class, also known as the Open 60.

Inclement weather can place sailors in grave danger, not least due to their vast distance from normal emergency services, and competitors must have completed a solo trans-oceanic race or a previous Vendée Globe to be eligible to take part.

Outside assistance is not permitted although competitors can anchor to carry out repairs.

There has been a handful of cases of sailors rescuing rivals who have suffered serious boat damage or capsized, the last coming in the 2008-09 race when defending champion Vincent Riou brought Jean Le Cam on board near Cape Horn.

Le Cam was trapped in his overturned boat for 16 hours and the dramatic rescue damaged Riou's mast leading him to abandon the race in the world's southernmost city Ushuaia .

Riou, who had beaten Le Cam by less than seven hours four years previously, was awarded third place overall.

History of the Vendée Globe

The Globe Challenge, now known as the Vendée Globe, was founded in 1989 by French sailor Philippe Jeantot .

He was fourth in the inaugural 1989-90 race behind Titouan Lamazou with 12 men - 10 Frenchmen, a South African and an American - taking part.

There were seven official finishers although Mike Plant completed the race and set a new American single-handed circumnavigation record despite disqualifying himself for receiving minor assistance.

On his way to finishing in second place, Loick Peyron rescued Philippe Poupon who capsized in the Southern Ocean.

Plant was the race's first fatality when he was lost at sea off the Azores on his way to the 1992-93 race before his friend, British yachtsman Nigel Burgess , was found drowned just four days after the start.

Alain Gautier won the second renewal from Jean-Luc Van den Heede who improved on his third-place finish from two years previously.

The race then switched to being held every four years but poor weather led to there being just six finishers from 16 starters in 1996-97.

Christophe Auguin took victory with Catherine Chabaud becoming the first woman to complete the Vendée Globe, but this edition was marred by a number of capsizes.

Briton Pete Goss rescued Raphael Dinelli in the Southern Ocean, an act for which he would receive the Legion d'honneur , with two more competitors - Tony Bullimore and Thierry Dubois saved by the Australian navy.

Then Canadian sailor Gerry Roufs was lost at sea as the race suffered its third fatality prompting organisers to strengthen safety rules for entrants and boats.

Those efforts were rewarded with 15 completing out of 24 in 2000-01.

The race is best remembered for a fine duel between Michel Desjoyeaux and Britain's Ellen MacArthur whose victory bid was ended when her boat needed emergency repairs after hitting a semi-submerged container.

MacArthur took second to become the first non-French sailor to finish in the top three and the youngest competitor to finish the race at 24.

Winner Desjoyeaux set a new solo circumnavigation record of 93 days three hours and 57 minutes with he, MacArthur and third-placed Roland Jourdain the first sailors to go round the world single-handed in under 100 days.

The race grew in popularity after that with Riou beating Le Cam to victory in 2004-05 before Desjoyeaux claimed his second triumph four years later.

Armel Le Cleac'h was runner-up in 2008-09 and had to settle for second again in 2012-13 behind Francois Gabart when the race's last capsize - Spaniard Javier Sanso who was rescued near the Azores - occurred.

But Le Cleac'h finally emerged victorious in 2016-17, winning in a new race record of 74 days three hours 35 minutes and 46 seconds from Britain's Alex Thomson .

The contenders for the Vendée Globe 2020

With Le Cleac'h opting not to defend his title, Thomson will be hoping to become the first non-French Vendée Globe winner having finished third and second in the last two events.

The 46-year-old Welshman won the Clipper Race back in 1999 making him the youngest captain to claim a round-the-world yacht race .

He has since excelled in single-handed events despite being forced to retire in both the 2004-05 and 2008-09 Vendee Globes.

Four years ago, he made a blistering start race reaching the Cape of Good Hope in less than 18 days, but a broken starboard foil slowed his progress and made his second place all the more creditable.

If he can avoid serious boat damage, Thomson is undoubtedly the favourite to take the title out of France for the first time in its ninth edition.

Before setting off from his home base of Gosport on the south coast of England, he told Portsmouth News he was hoping to fulfil a long-held ambition.

"This is 20 years of my life so, yes, this is what we’ve all been waiting for and what we’ve all been working towards.

"A win would certainly validate everything that we as a team, together with our partners, have put into this journey.

"Obviously, the goal is to go out there and win it. But to get there, you have to finish and this race is very, very tough to finish." - Alex Thomson

There are no previous winners in the line-up although 2004-05 runner-up Le Cam, who has finished fifth and sixth since being rescued in the 2008-09 race, will also make his fifth start.

More than half the fleet hails from France with four competitors from Britain and one from each of Switzerland, Finland, Italy, Germany, Japan and Spain whose Didac Costa will helm the boat MacCarthur steered to second place 20 years ago.

There are five women taking part with three from Britain including Samantha Davies who finished fifth in the 2008-09 race.

Finland has its first entrant in the shape of 58-year-old airline pilot Ari Huusela who races Ariel 2, the boat Dee Caffari steered to seventh place in 2008-09.

Boris Herrmann is Germany's first Vendée Globe sailor over a year after he and his boat, Malizia II , were involved in a headline-making transatlantic journey.

Herrmann transported climate change activist Greta Thunberg to the UN Climate Action Summit last August with the boat's energy supplied by solar panels and underwater turbines making it a zero-carbon trip.

A keen environmentalist himself, Herrmann's boat will have an ocean sensor onboard to monitor water temperature, carbon dioxide and pH levels in the Southern Ocean to gather data for scientists examining climate change.

He will hope to go the distance unlike Malizia II's previous Vendée Globe outing four years ago when French skipper Sebastien Josse had to quit due to foil damage 30 days into the race.

Also in the fleet is the incredible Damien Seguin who is the first sailor with a disability to compete in the Vendée Globe.

The 41-year-old Frenchman was born without a left hand but went on to become a skilled seaman and won gold at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games in the solo 2.4-metre keelboat class.

He has won now appeared in four Paralympic Games, winning three medals in total and regaining his 2.4mR title in Rio.

Seguin, who carried the French flag in the London 2012 Opening Ceremony, is also a regular on the IMOCA offshore racing circuit.

With the help of Le Cam, Seguin has made ergonomic adaptations to his Groupe Apicil boat ahead of the start of his awe-inspiring challenge.

How to watch the Vendée Globe 2020

You can watch the start of the Vendée Globe 2020-21 live on Olympic Channel on Sunday 8 November with the fleet set to depart at 12:02 GMT.

Olympic Channel will also stream weekly highlights of the race as well as live coverage of the finish in Les Sables D'Olonne with the first boats expected back in mid-January.

Alex Thomson celebrates with his wife Kate aboard his Imoca monohull Hugo Boss after crossing the finish line of the Vendee Globea round-the-world yacht race, off Les Sables d’Olonne, western France

Alex Thomson finishes runner-up in Vendee Globe round-the-world race

The British sailor Alex Thomson has finished runner-up in the Vendee Globe round-the-world yacht race after a colossal battle with Armel Le Cleac’h.

The eighth edition of single-handed offshore racing’s ultimate test was won by the Frenchman on Thursday afternoon in a record time of 74 days, three hours and 35 minutes. That smashed the race record set by François Gabart four years ago by three days, 22 hours and 41 minutes – a time Thomson also bettered when crossing the line on Friday morning.

The Hugo Boss skipper, who was third four years ago, finished in 74 days, 19 hours and 35 minutes, with equipment problems eventually causing him to fall short in his quest to become the first non-French winner of the Vendee Globe.

Le Cleac’h had been in front since early December but Thomson chipped away at the lead and on Monday broke the world record for the greatest distance sailed solo in 24 hours, notching up 536.8 miles.

The 42-year-old continued to hunt down Le Cleac’h only to concede that victory was unlikely on Wednesday as the wind instruments on his 60ft race boat Hugo Boss had prevented the yacht’s autopilot working properly and him from sleeping for days.

It saw Thomson the gap to Le Cleac’h grow, with the British sailor eventually reaching Les Sables d’Olonne, near La Rochelle on the west coast of France, at around 7.40am on Friday, having set sail on the mammoth race on 6 November.

Thomson matched Dame Ellen MacArthur’s second-placed finish in the 2001 edition of the Vendee Globe and broke his own British record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe in a monohull.

“You hope and you pray, but I think 24, 36 hours ago I knew that was the end,” Thomson said of his chances of winning. “Congratulations to Armel, what a great race he has done. The last few days I haven’t really slept very much. I think I have slept five hours in three days and in the last 24 I haven’t slept at all. The tank is on empty.”

Thomson’s biggest wishes now are to sleep, wake up with his family and have his life back after such relentless hardship at sea, where after just 13 days in an unidentified object in the water caused his starboard foil to break.

“You never know what is going to happen – that’s part of the Vendee Globe so it happened,” the Briton said. “I spent the whole race thinking ‘what if?’ and I’ve had the frustrations but I don’t really want to talk about it any more. It happened, it’s finished, it’s over.

“The race is as it is. I am very happy to be in second place and maybe next time it will be one better. I had moments of pleasure, for sure. For me, it was an exercise in trying not to be frustrated and try and be as positive as possible. It wasn’t easy. Maybe I made it seem easy.”

Thomson was clearly mentally and physically exhausted after crossing the line, but competing in a fifth Vendee Globe is clearly a tantalising prospect.

“A third, a second – it is easy to see what comes after this,” Thomson said. “Yeah, we’ll have to see. I think if I can put together a competitive campaign and we can take the level to the next one, I’d very interested to do the next one. I’d best ask my wife first.”

The final 40 skippers racing in the 2024 Vendee Globe have been announced, and include British sailors – Samantha Davies, Pip Hare and Sam Goodchild.

The 10th edition of the 24,300NM solo non-stop round-the-world yacht race – considered the ultimate test of ocean racing – begins on 10 November 2024 from Les Sables d’Olonne in France.

All entrants will be looking to beat Armel Le Cleach’h’s record of 74 days, 3 hours, 35 minutes and 46 seconds, which he achieved in the 2016 Vendee Globe .

For the 2024 Vendee Globe, the rules for qualifying were changed.

Previous editions allowed skippers who had previously competed in the race to be guaranteed entry. For this year’s event, entrants had to qualify their boats by taking part in two solo races from an approved list – the 2022 Vendee Arctique, the 2022 Route du Rhum, the 2023 Return to Base (return race of the Transat Jacques Vabre), the Transat CIC in 2024 and the New York Vendee-Les Sables d’Olonne in 2024).

Entrants also had to build miles to gain enough points to qualify.

British 2024 Vendee Globe Skipper: Samantha Davies

Sam Davies is one of the most experienced skippers on the IMOCA 60 circuit, and few can match her ocean racing track record; this will be her fourth time racing in the Vendee Globe.

The sailor, who built her initial experience racing with Tracy Edwards, is better known in her adopted home of France rather than her native Britain despite her impressive track record.

At age 24, she was part of the Edwards’ 1998 Jules Verne Trophy team – the first all-female crew to attempt to win the trophy. The team smashed five world records but ended with a broken mast on their 92ft catamaran, Royal & SunAlliance , 2,000 miles off the coast of Chile.

She moved to France and followed the familiar racing path of the Mini 6.50 and Figaro circuits before competing in her first Vendee Globe in 2008.

It was a stellar performance, with Davies finishing 4th onboard Roxy, with a corrected time of 95 days, 4 hours, 39 minutes and 1 second; she was named the 2009 Yachtsman of the Year by the Yachting Journalists’ Association.

She returned for the 2012-2013 event but her IMOCA 60, Savéol was dismasted 130NM northwest of Madeira.

Davies went on to skipper the first all-female Volvo Ocean Race crew, Team SCA in the 2014-15 event; the team included Dee Caffari, Annie Lush, Carolijn Brouwer, Libby Greenhalgh, and Liz Wardley.

In 2018, she began her long-standing partnership with Initiatives-Cœur.

In the 2020 Vendee Globe, she was forced to retire after a UFO hit the boat off Cape Town, causing structural damage to the keel. following repairs, she continued racing, crossing the line on 28 February 2021, and raised money for the charity, Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque.

For 2024, she will be racing in her new foiling IMOCA 60, launched in 2022, having already secured third place in the 2024 Transat CIC and 6th place in the 2024 New York Vendee-Les Sables d’Olonne.

British 2024 Vendee Globe Skipper: Pip Hare

Pip Hare won legions of fans during the 2020 Vendee Globe with her upbeat, positive attitude and dogged determination while racing around the world in one of the oldest boats in the fleet, the 2000 IMOCA 60, Medallia (formerly Superbigou ).

The sailor came late to competitive sailing, and was initially a long-term liveaboard cruiser, sailing her Lightwave 395 around the Med, the Caribbean and South America, right down to Patagonia before returning home.

Her first solo race was the 2009 OSTAR, which she finished in 23 days, 14 hours, and 38 minutes, coming 16th. The two-handed Round British and Ireland followed before competing in the Mini Transat circuit in 2011.

Hare moved to France to develop her racing skills before deciding to enter the 2020 race, starting Pip Hare Ocean Racing with a £25,000 loan and donations via crowdfunding.

Months before the race started, the software company, Medallia stepped in to sponsor her.

Hare did not disappoint, becoming the first British skipper to finish the 2020 Vendee Globe. She took 19th place out of a 33-strong fleet, beating professional racing teams which had been funded to the tune of over £20 million. She was named the 2021 Yachtsman of the Year by the Yachting Journalists’ Association for her performance in the 2020 Vendee Globe.

Medallia agreed to sponsor Hare for 2024, enabling her to secure the foiling 2016 Verdier/VPLP model, raced as Bureau Vallée II by Louis Burton to 3rd overall in the 2020-21 Vendee Globe.

The yacht won the 2016-17 event, raced by Armel Le Cléac’h as Banque Populaire , and set the current course record of 74d 3h 35m.

Rechristened, Medallia , the boat underwent a six-month refit, which included fitting bigger 5.4m foils. This allows the 6.5-tonne IMOCA 60 to lift clear of the water; the previous 3.4m foils only allowed the boat to lift half out of the water.

Changes to ballast were also made, along with the reinforcement of the boat’s structure.

Hare had planned a further refit  – including replacing the yacht’s keel bearings – ahead of the 2024 race start but in April 2024, she announced that two of her sponsors were “unable to re-sign contracts for the final year of the campaign due to the world economic climate”, and launched an urgent funding appeal . Hare also wants a new suit of sails, rather than sailing with ones that have already been used to race around the world.

Hare is still pushing hard and recently raced to 9th place in the 2024 New York Vendee-Les Sables d’Olonne to secure her place on the start line.

British 2024 Vendee Globe Skipper: Sam Goodchild

This is Sam Goodchild’s first Vendee campaign, but he has a solid racing background, having sailed in the Class 40, Figaro, and Ocean Fifty circuits.

He started as a preparateur for the likes of Alex Thomson and Mike Golding before joining the Artemis Offshore Academy in 2010, aimed at nurturing British sailing talent.

Seasons on the Figaro, Class 40 and Ocean Fifty circuits helped Goodchild hone his skills, and he went on to win the Pro Sailing Tour 2021 as skipper of the Ocean Fifity, Leyton. He then moved to Thomas Ruyant’s TR Racing team as part of his plans to fast-track to a Vendee campaign.

Goodchild was previously crew on the Spanish 2014-15 Ocean Race team, MAPFRE, and took part in three legs of the 2022-23 Ocean Race on Kevin Escoffier’s Holcim-PRB, racing from Alicante to Itajaí via the South Seas.

On his return, he launched his IMOCA 60, For the Planet (now called Vulnerable ), previously raced as aDvens For Cybersecurity and LinkedOut by Thomes Ruyant in the 2020 Vendee Globe. Ruyant will also be at the start line of the 2024 Vendee Globe on his own IMOCA 60 – also called Vulnerable.

In his first solo IMOCA 60 race, Goodchild came third in the 2023 Retour a La Base and went on to win the 2023 IMOCA Globe Series. He is the first British skipper to win this championship.

But he suffered a blow in last month’s New York Vendée-Les Sables d’Olonne when he was forced to abandon the race after the yacht dismasted 150 miles from Santa Maria in The Azores. At the time, he was in 4th place. A new mast is currently being installed.

Other entrants for the 2024 Vendee Globe include:

  • Race veteran Jean Le Cam , 65, is the oldest skipper planning to cross the start line. He will be racing the 2024-generation boat, Tout Commence en Finistere – Armor Lux , which does not have foils. Out of the 40 IMOCA 60s in the race, 24 have foils, 16 do not. Le Cam hit the headlines in the 2020 race after rescuing PRB’s Kevin Escoffier, who was forced to abandon his yacht after a wave “broke the boat”, causing it to sink ;
  • The 2020 race winner, Yannick Bestavan. He will be racing his 2022 new generation foiling IMOCA 60, Maitre CoQ ;
  • Charlie Dalin and Louis Burton will aim to better their respective second and third place in the 2020 race. Dalin, who won the 2024 New York Vendée-Les Sables d’Olonne, will be racing the foiling IMOCA 60, Macif, launched in June 2023; Burton will be competing in the 2020 foiling IMOCA 60, Bureau Vallee ;
  • Clarisse Cremer , who in the 2020 race became the fastest woman in the history of the Vendee Globe, finishing in 87 days, and beating Ellen MacArthur’s 21-year-old record; it was also Cremer’s first round-the-world yacht race. In 2024, she will be racing in the 2019 foiling L’Occitane en Provenance (formerly Apivia , which was raced to second place in the 2020-21 Vendee Globe by Charlie Dalin). Her team principal is former British Vendee Globe skipper, Alex Thomson. Clarisse Cremer was controversially dropped by her original 2020 sponsor, Banque Populaire which doubted the French sailor could qualify for the 2024 Vendee Globe, having been on maternity leave in 2022 .
  • French offshore legend Jeremie Beyou , who was a favourite in the 2020 race; he came 13th having returned to Les Sables d’Olonne to make repairs before setting off nine days after the start. He will be racing in 2024 with a new IMOCA, Charal 2.
  • The youngest skipper in the race is French sailor, Violette Dorange , who will be 24 at the start; she is racing in Jean Le Cam’s former boat Yes We Cam , now called DeVenir.
  • First-time Vendee skipper Guirec Soudee , made his name when he sailed solo around the world via the North and South Poles, accompanied by his hen, Monique. He joined the IMOCA circuit in 2022.

vendee globe yacht race

  • The Ocean Race 2022 en équipage
  • The Transat CIC 2024 en solitaire

  • New-York – Vendée Les Sables 2024 : 1 mille nautique = 1.5 milles

vendee globe yacht race

vendee globe yacht race

vendee globe yacht race

vendee globe yacht race

vendee globe yacht race

Welcome to the land of sheer silent whiteness. Its vast expanses are filled with fresh Arctic air, howling winds, and the spirit of true adventure. Come with us to the lands of the ancient Khanty and Mansi tribes that survived in this harsh climate of the Nether-Polar Urals . See the mountains that defy any logical or geological reason for their existence. Experience the wonders of this sparsely populated land where you can hardly see a human trace. Welcome to Yugra!

Flora & Fauna

Water resources, landmarks and tourism, major mountains, mount narodnaya, mount zaschita, mount neroyka, the pyramid mountain, samarovskaya mountain, ski and sports facilities, protected sites, reserves, national and natural parks, rivers and lakes, major cities, khanty-mansiysk.

The Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area – Yugra (KhMAO) is located in the central part of the West Siberian Plain, stretching from west to east from the Ural Range to the Ob-Yenisei Watershed. The vast areas of this plain, as well as the Lower Priob region, are considered one of the most recently inhabited areas.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area

The Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area (KhMAO) was established in 1930. Its name comes from two main northern indigenous peoples – the Khanty and the Mansi. From 1944 it was legally part of the Tyumen Region , but in 1993 the Area received autonomy and became a full-fledged territorial entity of the Russian Federation. It is a part of the Urals Federal District. The administrative centre is the city of Khanty-Mansiysk , whereas the largest city is Surgut. The word Yugra was introduced to the name of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area in 2003 to pay tribute to the old name used by the locals to call the territories lying beyond the North Urals.

The KhMAO borders the Komi Republic in the north-west, the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District in the north, the Krasnoyarsk Area and the Tomsk Region in the east and south-east, the Tyumen Region in the south and the Sverdlovsk Region in the south-west.

The area of the territory is 534,801 sq.km, the length from north to south is 800 km, from west to east is 1400 km. The population of this huge territory is 1,674,676 people as of 2020, which is the same amount as people living in Barcelona or Munich.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area

The main part of the territory is a huge, poorly dissected plain where absolute elevation marks rarely exceed 200 meters above sea level. The western part of the KhMAO territory is characterized by low and middle mountainous terrains with some Alpine relief featured in the Subpolar Urals. Here are ridges and spurs of the mountain system of the North Urals and the Subpolar Urals. The maximum absolute elevations are on the border with the Komi Republic . Mount Narodnaya (1,895m) is the highest peak.

More than 800 species of higher plants grow in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area . Almost the entire territory is covered by taiga forests that occupy about 52% of the area. Spruce, fir, pine, cedar, larch, birch, alder grow here. In the northern parts of the area, the composition of the vegetation is greatly influenced by perennial permafrost. Light lichen grasslands which are used as deer pastures are widespread there. Tundra dominates in the mountainous and hilly areas. River floodplains and lowlands are characterized by meadow vegetation, the so-called water meadows. High floodplains of large rivers are mainly covered with woods that mainly feature willows, birches and aspens. Forests and swamps are rich in berries and various valuable plants, most of which are used in traditional indigenous medicine.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area

The animal world is typical for the Russian taiga zone. There are 369 species of vertebrates. Mammals are represented by 60 species (28 of them are commercial species). The most common and valuable of them are wild reindeer, elk, fox, sable, fox, squirrel, marten, ermine, Siberian weasel, polecat, mink, weasel, otter, hare and others. Wolverine and West Siberian river beaver are included in the Red Book of Russia.

There are 256 bird species in the region, including 206 sedentary and nesting species. Some rare bird species are listed in the Red Book. There are 42 species of fish in rivers and lakes. Of these, 19 species are commercial, among them are starlet sturgeon, lelema, muksun (whitefish), pelyad, chir, lake herring, wader, tugun, freshwater cod, pike, ide, roach, bream, fir, perch, ruff, golden and silver crucian carp, carp (carp is grown in the cooling ponds of the Surgutskaya and Nizhnevartovskaya hydroelectric plants). Sturgeon is listed in the Red Book. There is an abundance of mosquitoes and gnats in the area, the greatest activity of which is in the second half of summer.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Reindeer

Yugra can boast of over 2 thousand large and small rivers, the total length of which is 172,000 km. The main rivers are the Ob (3,650 km), the Irtysh (3,580 km). These are some of the largest rivers in Russia. Other significant rivers include the tributaries of the Ob (the Vakh, Agan, Tromyogan, Bolshoy Yugan, Lyamin, Pim, Bolshoy Salym, Nazym, Severnaya Sosva, Kazym rivers), the tributary of the Irtysh (the Konda River) and the Sogom River. Ten rivers are over 500 km long. All the Yugra rivers with the exception of the rivers in the Ural part of the region are characterized by rather slow currents, gentle slopes, some surge wave phenomena, spring and summer floods. The Ob River basin extends over a distance of 700-200 km from the mouths of its tributaries. Such abundance of water facilitates the appearance of floodplain swamps and seasonal lakes.

The region's swamps are predominantly of the upper and transitional type. Those water basins occupy about a third of the region. About 290,000 lakes with the area of more than 1 ha are surrounded by swamps and forests. The largest lakes are Tursuntsky Tuman, Levushinsky Tuman, Vandemtor and Trmemtor. The deepest lakes are Kintus (48 m) and Syrky Sor (42 m). However, most of the lakes (about 90%) are modest and quite small and have no surface runoff.

The area is rich in resources of fresh, mineral and thermal underground waters, which are still insignificantly used.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. River

The climate is moderately continental. Winters are harsh, snowy and long, and summers are short and relatively warm. The territory is protected from the west by the Ural Mountains but its openness from the north has a significant impact on the climate formation because cold air masses from the Arctic freely penetrate the area. The flat character of the terrain with a large number of rivers, lakes and swamps also has its impact. Most of the precipitation falls during the warm seasons. But even with a small amount of precipitation, their evaporation is very low, which as a result contributes to the formation of the zone of excessive moisture throughout the Yugra. The snow cover is stable from late October to early May, its height varies from 50 to 80 cm. The region is characterized by a rapid change of weather conditions, especially in transitional seasons (autumn and spring), as well as during the day. Late spring and early autumn frosts are rather frequent and can happen even until mid-June. Average January temperatures range from -18ºC to -24ºC (0 F to -11 F) and can reach -60ºC to -62ºC (-76 F to -80 F) when the northern cold air masses break through. The average temperature in July, the warmest month of the year, ranges from +15ºC to +20ºC (+59 F to +68 F) and on very rare days can reach a maximum temperature of +36ºC (+97 F). The prevailing wind direction is north in summer and south in winter.

The weather in the mountains is quite changeable and cool even in summer. The best time to visit the region's mountains is between July and mid-August.

The Yugra of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area has a huge natural resource potential. These are oil and gas deposits, forests, gold and iron ore deposits, as well as bauxites, copper, zinc, lead, niobium, tantalum, brown and hard coal deposits, rock crystal, quartz and piezo quartz, peat deposits, etc. The region has plenty of natural resources. In terms of natural gas reserves, the Yugra ranks second in the Russian Federation after the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District .

The industry is dominated by oil and gas production, power generation and processing industries, including woodworking except for pulp and paper production.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Pump-rocking

The Khanty-Mansi area has very developed tourism of all kinds. There is a modern infrastructure for cultural exploration as well as for active recreation.

Fans of sports and eco-friendly tourism will be able to conquer majestic mountains and raft down picturesque rivers, enjoy the beauty of nature in nature reserves and natural parks. The hills and mountains of this area open up endless opportunities for skiing and snowboarding.

The mountainous part of the Subpolar Urals located on the territory of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area is very beautiful. The highest peaks of the Ural Mountains are situated here.

Being the highest point of the whole Urals, Mount Narodnaya (1,895 m), also known as Naroda and Poenurr and translated as People's Mountain is territorially situated in the Subpolar Urals, on the border of the Yugra Area and the Komi Republic . It is the highest point in European Russia outside the Caucasus. This leads to its large topographic prominence of 1,772 metres (5,814 ft).

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Mount Narodnaya

The top of the mountain is half a kilometre from the border towards Yugra. As for the name of the mountain, scientists could not come to a common opinion for a long time, so there are two versions. According to one version, in the Soviet years, an expedition of pioneers gave the mountain a name in honour of the Soviet people - Narodnaya (the stress is on the second syllable). According to the other version, even before the arrival of the first Soviet tourists, the peak was named after the River Naroda (the stress is on the first syllable) flowing at the foot of the mountain. The Nenets peoples called the River Naroda Naro, which means a thicket or a dense forest, and the Mansi peoples called it Poengurr or Poen-urr, which translates as the top, or head. The maps used to refer to it as Mount Naroda or Mount Naroda-Iz. Nowadays, it appears everywhere as Narodnaya.

In the 1980s, someone set a bust of Lenin on the top of the mountain. Its remains can be found there to this day. There is one more symbolic relic there – some Orthodox believers erected a worship cross on top of Mount Narodnaya after a Procession of the Cross.

The slopes of the mountain are steeper in the north-east and south-west and there are many steep rocks on them. The south-eastern and northern parts of the mountain are more gentle but they are also covered with scree. Be vigilant and careful when climbing! On the slopes of the mountain, there are many not only boulders but also caverns filled with clear water as well as ice. There are glaciers and snowfields. From the north-eastern part of the mountain, you can observe Lake Blue near which tourists and travellers like to make bivouacs.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Mount Narodnaya

Mesmerizing with its beauty and inaccessibility, it attracts many tourists and fans of active recreation. This majestic mountain is quite remote from the settlements, so getting to it is not an easy task. The mountain is located in the Yugyd Va National Park , so it is necessary to register in advance and get a visit permit from the park administration. How to get to the park administration and get a permit, read the article on the Yugyd Va National Park .

Mountain Zaschita (1,808 m) is the second-highest peak in the Ural Mountains, after Mount Narodnaya . Mysteriously, the name of the mountain, which roughly translates as Defense or Protection Mount, does not correlate in any way with the Mansi names of the nearby mountains and rivers. The origin of the name is unknown. There are some speculations but we will consider just one of them. On the map of the Northern Urals which was made by the Hungarian researcher Reguli the closest peak to Mount Narodnaya was called gnetying olu. Its location coincides with that of the present-day Mount Zaschita . The name gnetying olu in the Mansi can be deciphered as a mountain on which there is some help from ice. The mountain is believed to protect deer grazing on glaciers from mosquitoes. So, early topographers called the mountain more briefly – Mount Defense. Indeed, the slopes of this mountain are covered with a lot of snow and glaciers (the Yugra, Naroda, Kosyu, Hobyu glaciers and others). And it is here that the Mansi shepherds bring their deer which can rest on glaciers and snow. Summarizing all the above, we can say that Zaschita Mount is to some extent protection for deer from mosquitoes. The very name Zaschita appeared on maps with the beginning of hiking tours in the Subpolar Urals.

Mount Neroyka (1,645 m) is 100 km from Neroyka village, the closest tourist base to this peak. In the 1950s, people who were engaged in quartz mining near the mountain worked and lived in this base. Later, a gravel road was built from the village of Saranpaul to the mountain for large-scale development of the quartz deposit. In recent years, the road has not been much used and is practically not cleaned from snow in winter. There has been a plant built 20 km down from the mountain for primary processing of quartz with the use of nanotechnologies. There is an annual big camping event near the mountain. It is organized by the Tourism Department of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area. You can have a 1-hour helicopter ride to the mountain from the village of Saranpaul. Should you wish to fly from the city of Khanty-Mansiysk , be prepared to fly over the taiga for 2.5-3 hours.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Mount Neroyka

Quite inquisitive tourists happened to discover, by a lucky chance, a Pyramid similar to that of Cheops but four times bigger. It is located on the territory of the Narodo-Ityinsky Ridge. The closest to the pyramid is the village of Saranpaul. The sizes of the found pyramid are as follows: the height is 774 m, in comparison to the Egyptian pyramid which is 147 m; the length of a lateral edge is 230 m whereas the Egyptian pyramid is 1 km. The pyramid is located precisely according to the cardinal directions, there is not a single degree deviation at that. The origin of the pyramid is unknown, scientists are still making assumptions. No traces of human activity were found near the pyramid. The only way to get here at this time is by helicopter.

Samarovskaya Mountain is another wonder that is baffling many people. It is dividing the city of Khanty-Mansiysk into northern and southern parts. Few now living residents know that in the old days the highest part of the modern city used to bear a plural name of the Samarovsky Mountains among which there were Mount Palenina, Komissarskaya, Miroslavskaya, Filinova, and Romanova. Originally, there was a village called Samarovo amidst these mountains. Until now, many issues bewilder both residents and scientists. How could a mountain form in the middle of the West Siberian Plain? What is inside it? Won't the weight of the buildings erected on the top of the mountain affect its height? The uniqueness of Samarovskaya Mountain is that it consists of numerous large stones, boulders, rocks that are absolutely foreign to this area. Scientists have not yet come to a consensus on the mountain’s origin.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area.

The Yugra is very famous for its ski resorts, the main of which are:

  • The Cedar Ravine ski resort (Surgut city, Naberezhny Ave. 39/1)
  • Three Mountains (Trekhgorie) ski resort (30 km from Nizhnevartovsk, Ermakovsky settlement)
  • Stone Cape (Kamenniy Mys) ski resort (near the city of Surgut)
  • Pine Urman ski resort ( Khanty-Mansiysk , Sportivnaya Str., 24)

The far-away lands of the Yugra are the blessed sanctuaries for many animals as the area is rather hostile to a human There are reserves, natural parks, wildlife sanctuaries here that aim to protect the national treasures of the lands. Having visited these regions once, you would crave for coming back again and again to feel that unique sense of unity with nature, to forget about the urban fuss and and hustles whatsoever. The harsh but beautiful nature of this extraordinary area leaves an indelible trace in the soul of every person.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Samarovsky outlier. Archeopark

On the territory of the district there are 25 specially protected natural areas, the most famous of them are:

  • The reserves are two: the Malaya Sosva Reserve and the Yugan Reserve, the latter was established in 1982 as the largest reserve of taiga landscapes. The purpose of the reserves was to study unobtrusively and carefully preserve the endemic flora and fauna without disturbing natural processes. Hunting and economic activities are prohibited here, which is important for the preservation of natural ecosystems.
  • The natural parks are the Samarovsky Chugas Nature Park, the Siberian Sloping Hills (Uvaly), the Numto (also called Lake Numto), and the Kondinskie Lakes.

These reserves and natural parks offer tourists their own excursion programs to make visiting their territory much more enjoyable and educational.

The Samarovsky Chugas Nature Park is located in the center of Khanty-Mansiysk , on a small hill between the Ob and Irtysh rivers.

The territory of the Siberian Sloping Hills (Uvaly) natural park is 350 km away from the city of Khanty-Mansiysk . You can get there by helicopter or by plane. The office of the park is located at 7a Pionerskaya Street, Nizhnevartovsk.

The Kondinskie Lakes Natural Park is located 380 km from Khanty-Mansiysk . Half of the park is covered with swamps, but there is also a recreational area. There you can rest, swim, do some amateur fishing, picking berries (cowberries, cranberries) and mushrooms is permitted. There is only one independent walking route here, it runs for 3 km in the deep forest. It is a cool place for kids since the park is equipped with sports grounds, a pool and a small zoo where the kids can interact with brown bear cubs. What else, try the TaiPark, it is a rope course running at the height of 2.5 meters, having 15 stages, the full length is 125 meters. There is an opportunity to order water walking tours in the town of Sovetsky, which can be reached by train from Khanty-Mansiysk .

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Kondinskie Lakes

The Numto Nature Park is located almost in the center of the West Siberian Plain, in the Beloyarsk district of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area, 300 km from the city of Surgut and 200 km from the town of Beloyarsk. It is located on the border of Yugra and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area. The administration of the park is located at 2, Beloyarsky micro-district, 4a. The territory of the natural park is a treasure trove of archaeological and ethnocultural monuments. As of today, there have been discovered 20 architectural monuments, including fortified and not fortified settlements, places of worship abandoned by the peoples who lived here from the Stone Age to almost the present day. Researchers have also found 65 monuments of ethnic value, the main of which are worship objects, sacred places and cemeteries.

The Malaya Sosva Reserve includes several subordinated territories and sanctuaries, including Lake Ranghe-Tour. The reserve offers a 4-km walking guided route that gets the visitors introduced to the typical features and characteristics of flora and fauna of the region. The route is called Bear Trail and you can spot bears there (don’t come close though, we’ve already written how to behave if you meet a bear in the wild). Also, you will see the River Malaya Sosva, some marshes, ancient cultural monuments and other nice sights. Permission to visit the reserve can be obtained from the administration of the reserve at Lenina Str. 46, town Sovetskiy.

As to the Yugan Nature Reserve , it is inaccessible to common hikers who are afraid of flying since there are no roads to it. The only way to get there is taking a helicopter ride. You also must obtain a permit in the administration of the reserve, go accompanied by employees of the reserve, and only on special transport of the reserve (motorboat, snowmobile). The central manor of the Reserve and the administration are located in the village of Ugut. To get to this village, you should first go to the town of Surgut, then go to the town of Pyt-Yakh, and from it there is a road to the village of Ugut. It is about 100 km from Ugut to the southern border of the reserve i, and another 25 km to the nearest cordon. The administration works from Monday to Friday. You can request a permit via mail at [email protected] , order a guided tour at [email protected]

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Yugan Nature Reserve

The Yugra lands are heaven for water sports aficionados. They can have some awesome fishing or go rafting along such rivers as: the river Naroda, the Deep Sabun, etc.

The Naroda River is 140 km long. It is the left tributary of the Manya River located in the Ob River basin. The river has its origin on the south-western slope of Mount Narodnaya . It is a mountain-taiga river with rapids, swifts, numerous rolls, which attracts interest among water tourists. However, it is usually not rafted very often.

The Deep Sabun River flows through the territory of the Siberian Sloping Hills Nature Park. The park has developed multi-day water routes. It is possible to raft along the river in summer and to go skiing along it in winter.

The Kondinskie Lakes are a system of lakes along the left bank of the Konda River. The largest lake is the Arantur, with pine forests on the northern side and sandy beaches well equipped for a nice relaxing me-time. The water heats up well in summer. The small river Okunevaya and the river Maly Akh flow into the lake. The Maly Akh comes in on the west side and connects lake Arantur with Lake Pon-Tour. This lake is the richest in fish, and there is also a parking lot for fishermen here. The streams connect Pon-Tour with small lakes Krugloe and Lopukhovoye. When you look at Lopukhovoe lake, you feel as if you have found yourself in a fabulous place: more than half of its surface is covered with white lilies, as well as yellow flowers of the water-beans. Then the river Big Akh, which flows into the river Konda, connects all the lakes into a single system. Along the river there are many archeological monuments such as forts and settlements which have paths to them. The southernmost lake of the park is Ranghe-Tour.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Rivers and Lakes

Yugra is not the easiest destination and not the most accessible, but the effort is well worth it. You should first get to the capital of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area – the city of Khanty-Mansiysk either by air or by train.

Khanty-Mansiysk is based on the premises of the former village Samarovo founded in 1582. It used to be the territory of the Khanty people and a pit stop for coachmen who rode their wagons across the country. The village was founded by Russian Count Samara, thus the name Samarovo. The modern city actually began to develop in 1930 because amidst the Siberian taiga there finally started to appear stone houses on the high bank of the Irtysh River. In 1940, the village was renamed into Khanty-Mansiysk by the name of the peoples living on this territory – the Khanty and the Mansi, and in 1950 it received the status of a town.

Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia

The city has several attractions. Mount Samarovskaya is probably the biggest natural and scientific wonder. It divides the city in two parts and causes many concerns for urban developers who always wonder whether this mountain can move making the buildings slide or even sink in.

Another beauty is the century-old cedar grove that is within the city limits. The grove is a part of the natural park Samarovsky Chugas. The word chugas in the language of the Khanty means a lonely hill in the low river floodplain.

Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia

The park is one of the main attractions of the city, it hosts an open-air ethnographic museum called the Torum Maa, a cultural and tourist complex called Archaeopark, a biathlon center. Kids and adults, nature lovers and fans of culture love this place dearly.

A memorial sign to Yugra's discoverers is installed on top of the Samarovsky Chugas. It is a tall stele pyramid divided into three portions. On the lower level, there is a restaurant, on the second level is a small museum, and on the third level there is an observation deck, 40 m above the ground, with a magnificent view of the Irtysh River and the river port. The pyramid is decorated by the bas-relief depicting the discoverers of the region, from the 16th-century Count Samara to the geologists of the 20th century.

Another trademark of Khanty-Mansiysk is the State Museum of Nature and Man. The museum hosts a gallery and a workshop of a famous artist G. Rayshev.

The city has a lot of small monuments generously spread around the city. There is the Khanty family resting on a camp, this monument is near the airport building. You can take a pic at the Golden Tambourine located at the intersection of Gagarin Street and Mira Street. Connoisseurs of culture should also visit the Sun – the Theatre of Ob-Ugrian Peoples, it is the world's first professional theatre of Khanty and Mansi peoples. And if you are travelling with kids, the Khanty-Mansiysk Puppet Theatre is a must-visit. In the period from May to October, you can take a boat ride to the confluence of two rivers – the Ob and the Irtysh. Yugra Service Co. operates such cruises, you can find more information locally at their address Tobolsk Trakt street 4, Khanty-Mansiysk .

Sodebo, VandB: sponsoring a boat and the Vendée Globe, how do they complement each other?

One has been a major partner of the Vendée Globe (Sodebo) for 20 years, the other a brand new official supplier (VandB). But these two companies from the Pays de la Loire region are contributing in their own way to the dynamism of the most iconic of round-the-world races. Alongside this support, they are also financing a sporting project, in the Ultim class (Sodebo with Thomas Coville) and the IMOCA class (VandB with Maxime Sorel). Let's find out more about these commitments.

Sodebo

Sodebo, a long-standing commitment to the Vendée community

In 1998, although Sodebo was the market leader, the brand was not very well known. In the midst of the 1998 World Cup, Sodebo's managers noticed the growing interest in sport among the French. What if a commitment to sport could strengthen the brand's image with as many people as possible? In the months that followed, the two founders, Simone and Joseph Bougro, met Thomas Coville.

The chemistry between them was almost immediate: Sodebo launched itself into ocean racing alongside the sailor. This long adventure included participation in the Vendée Globe, where Thomas Coville came 6th in 2000. Although the Sodebo team then turned its attention to multihull racing, everyone in the company was able to witness the enthusiasm surrounding the most famous of round-the-world races. This is especially true for a company whose head office is located in Saint-Georges-de-Montaigu, in Vendée, very close to Les Sables d'Olonne, which makes the Vendée Globe even more attractive to employees.

Brand awareness multiplied by twelve nationwide

When the three daughters of the founders took over the management of the company in 2000, the aim was to continue to develop in France. Becoming a partner of the Vendée Globe was therefore an obvious choice, and it became effective in 2004. It's one of the biggest sporting events in France,’ explains the company. The Vendée Globe brings together a wide variety of sailors, men and women with incredible destinies. Being part of this adventure was the right bet’.

The partnerships have enabled Sodebo to raise its brand awareness twelvefold.  Within the company, they also applaud the complementary nature of the sporting project and its racing programme, which takes it all over France on the one hand and the Vendée Globe on the other. ‘There are no major trimaran races organised in the Vendée, so it's particularly complementary. Since then, Sodebo has broadened its horizons by also supporting Stade Rochelais (rugby) and an eSport team.

The Vendée Globe, a popular celebration and a great in-house event

In the Vendée Globe village, Sodebo will have a 250 m2 area with numerous events planned. The company will also be offering its Sodebox, an immersive box that will enable visitors to relive the brand's sailing adventure through a film. A catering area will also be set up in the press room for journalists. Even though he will be on stand-by to attempt the Jules Verne Trophy (the record for a crewed round-the-world voyage in an Ultim starting from Brest), Thomas Coville will be able to take part in a number of events in the village.

Finally, this commitment to the Vendée Globe is also a unifying moment for Sodebo staff. Some of the 2,800 employees will be manning the stand, giving them the opportunity to experience the Vendée Globe in a special way, thanks to the support of the Sodebo team.  It's an opportunity to experience the Vendée Globe in a special way and to provide visitors with a unique experience.

Arrivée de Maxime Sorel (VandB - Monbana - Mayenne) aux Sables d'Olonne sur la New York Vendée

Vandb, the festive spirit, from Maxime Sorel's boat to the village

VandB and Maxime Sorel have been making history together for ten years now. The retail brand specialising in the sale and tasting of wines, beers and spirits was created in 2001. Alongside the skipper, they experienced all the major Class40 races before embarking on the IMOCA circuit. In 2020, the company experienced its first Vendée Globe with Maxime, which the sailor brilliantly finished in 10th place. This partnership allows us to ‘get our employees on board and highlight the values of the company’, according to the in-house team.

The sponsor-skipper duo is back this year with a new-generation boat. The other innovation is that VandB is no longer just a team partner, the company is also an official supplier of the race. ‘It just made sense in terms of our business! It's a way of demonstrating our expertise and reinforcing our commitment to sailing’. VandB will be managing the bar, which will be open to all visitors for three weeks.

Instilling a festive spirit

At VandB, we like to instil a festive, friendly and family spirit and that really suits the Vendée Globe. Numerous events will be taking place throughout the village. Speeches by skippers and ocean racing personalities, interactive games, musical programmes: there will be something for everyone to ensure that each day is unique. Maxime Sorel will also be taking part in the festivities. Thanks to its involvement in the Vendée Globe, VandB is continuing to establish itself in sport. A partner of the Racing92 rugby club, the brand is also a partner of several local rugby and football clubs.
