Disney’s Yacht Club Resort , known for its New England-style elegance and nautical theme, has installed its annual Christmas Village train display. The Gingerbread Lighthouse Display and Christmas Village at Disney’s Yacht Club (Photos, Video)

As we get back on track (no pun intended) with our holiday coverage, we’re stopping at Disney’s Yacht Club to check out the Christmas Village, train set, and gingerbread lighthouse display. New this year, the gingerbread lighthouse adds an extra touch to the holiday festivities at the resort.

Of course, the classic train set that loops the Christmas Village is still the star of the show. During our visit, numerous guests (young and old) expressed their delight over the train as it made simple loops through a snow-covered village, myself included.

Below, we’ll look at a few photos of this year’s train set and preview the lighthouse. I’ve included a video of both displays toward the bottom of this article.

A lighthouse made from gingerbread at Disney's Yacht Club.

Yacht Club’s Christmas Village with Train Set

A large base for the Christmas Village and train set is installed each year in the Yacht Club’s lobby. Overnight, the entire display comes to life. Guests visit Disney’s Yacht Club throughout the holiday season to enjoy the display.

Yacht Club’s Christmas Village sits on the Ale and Compass side of the lobby. It will be to the immediate right of the Christmas tree when you enter the lobby via the resort side.

A Christmas village with train set

Signage indicates when the train runs. The train needs to recharge from time to time. Per the sign, the train runs from:

  • 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m.
  • 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
  • 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
  • 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
  • 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
  • 9:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m.

A sign that lists the time when the train at Disney's Yacht Club departs.

Here is a photo of Christmas Village and the gingerbread lighthouse taken from the 2nd-floor balcony.

The train set has an engine, one car, and a caboose.

I don’t know about you, but my sister and I loved playing with race tracks and train sets when we were younger.

A closeup view of the Christmas village that shows a water tower decorated to look like a snowman.

If you have time, you might inspect a few of the village pieces.

Details of the Christmas village at Disney's Yacht Club.

Several people were speculating that the train set must be Disney-themed. It is, but a closer look will show many details representing Disney’s Beach and Yacht Club. Here is a sign advertising Hurricane Hanna’s Grill, the poolside quick service at Stormalong Bay , the pool shared between the resorts.

A miniature sign on the Christmas Village that says Hurricane Hanna's Grill.

This village features a polar bear family drinking Coca-Cola, and a few are wearing Mickey Ears.

White bear figurines drinking Coke and getting Mickey ear hats.

This treehouse with the Mickey-shaped cutout is the piece that stood out to me the most. When the weather was nice enough, we were always forced outside as children. If I wasn’t riding my bike (that was so endearing it had a name), I was in my treehouse or swinging from underneath.

A treehouse with a hidden Mickey.

It’s a darling display that will undoubtedly stir up some memories.

Here is Mickey’s village with Minnie, Pluto, Mickey’s Ear Factory, and Mickey’s Watch Factory.

Mickey's Christmas Village is part of the train display at Disney's Yacht Club.

This Frozen Village features Anna, Olaf, Elsa, and Kristoff in front of Elsa’s ice palace.

Figurines of Anna, Elsa, and Olaf

Santa’s Village makes up the center of the display. Unfortunately, we’ve had consistent rain this week, so the lighting wasn’t the best for pictures. Yacht Club’s lobby is generally dark, but this display sits near the window. So if you want to take photos of it, it’s best to go on a sunny day. However, it does have a warm glow on overcast days and after dark.

Yacht Club Gingerbread Lighthouse Display

Yacht Club’s gingerbread lighthouse sits directly between the Christmas Village and the windows. Pastry Chef de Cuisine Michael Craig created this new display. He used the blueprints from the Crescent Lake Lighthouse to make a quarter-scale design and, along with other Disney chefs, turned it into a work of gingerbread art.

Disney Christmas Village

A vintage look at Walt Disney World Christmas decorations at the Yacht Club and Beach Club resorts.

For a nautical themed Christmas, head to Disney’s Yacht Club Resort where the Christmas decorations are loaded with ships, boats and mariner-related items that further tell the story of this Disney hotel’s classic theme.

Located just outside the World Showcase entrance to Epcot, Disney’s Yacht Club resort is located immediately beside Disney’s Beach Club resort.

Both are an easy walk from the theme park, or around the lake from Disney’s Boardwalk Resort, or Disney Swan or Dolphin.

DSC04875

Disney’s Yacht Club is always darker than Disney’s Beach Club resort. The hues are heavier, with navy blues and dark colors. The wood is darker, too.

This isn’t necessarily a beachy themed resort, but more of a classic nautical themed resort.

Personally, I find Disney’s Beach Club to be a lot more fun to visit, but if you’re already at Disney’s Beach Club, you should walk the short distance to Disney’s Yacht Club to see what they’ve got going on in the lobby.

There you’ll find a massive Christmas Village display, packed with Disney themed Christmas Villages and villages that are themed to the Yacht Club specifically, too.

Disney’s Beach Club Christmas Decorations

Next door at Disney’s Beach Club resort, you will find brighter and more colorful Christmas decorations. Including a Disney gingerbread carousel!

Disney’s Beach Club has a softer, more playful feel for beachside décor, compared to the Yacht Club’s heavy woods and dark décor.

Inside the lobby of Disney’s Beach Club at Christmas, you’ll find a Disney gingerbread carousel which actually spins around to the delight of visitors. See our video below to watch it spin around:

Don’t forget to look for Goofy on the top of the carousel!

Throughout the resort, the colors and décor are fresh and light, with plenty of whimsy thrown in from iconic beach scenes nestled in Christmas decor.

Beach Club Resort at Christmas

yacht club disney christmas

The next Walt Disney World hotel stop on our stroll around Crescent Lake is Beach Club. This follows our visit to Yacht Club , and continues as we attempt to expand upon our Free Self-Guided Walt Disney World Yuletide Resort Tour with a series of individual resort posts because why not?!

If you don’t have Annual Passes, that WDW Yuletide Resort Tour what we recommend doing in the morning before attending Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party so you don’t waste a park day of your normal tickets. In which case, you probably don’t need to see each individual post in this series unless you’re not totally sold on the tour. (Like Christmas morning, it’s better without “spoilers.”)

We are big fans of Beach Club at Christmas, and that has been the case for years. The life-size gingerbread carousel is always stunning, the marine ornaments are beautiful, and the ocean motif throughout the decor is light and cheerful–just like the holiday season. It’s a coastal twist on Christmas, and one that makes a lot of sense in Florida…

Let’s begin our tour with that delightful gingerbread carousel. This is right up there for me with the Grand Floridian’s gingerbread house in terms of favorite life-size holiday culinary creations at Walt Disney World. The gingerbread house is undeniably cool, but what I love about this is that it serves no readily ascertainable purpose.

yacht club disney christmas

Grand Floridian’s gingerbread house is also a snack spot, and I’d hazard a guess that it does far more in sales than it costs to build. Nothing is being sold at Beach Club, and this just feels like more of a passionate project. In reality, both probably are justified and built for the same reasons, but Beach Club’s just seems like a ‘fun for its own sake’ sort of thing.

Last year, Lilo & Stitch took over the carousel at Beach Club. I’d have to dig through my archives to confirm this, but I feel like that happens once every several years, and that Stitch has made appearances at Boardwalk’s gingerbread display as well as the Polynesian when he’s not at Beach Club. It seemed to be more of a “thing” back when Lilo & Stitch was still the hot new-ish property.

yacht club disney christmas

Beach Club’s gingerbread carousel is made by the Bakery and Engineering Team at Yacht & Beach Club, who have been making similar carousels for the last 19 years.

This year, they’ve chosen Daisy and Donald Duck to take center stage, with a few nods to other characters.

yacht club disney christmas

As indicated on the sign displayed next to the gingerbread carousel, it’s made from 36 pounds of honey, 96 pounds of bread flower, 100 pints of eggs, 10 pounds of spices, 10 quarts of simple syrup, 150 pounds of icing, 50 pounds of dark chocolate, 50 pounds of modeling chocolate, 200 gum paste flowers, 2019 pieces of gingerbread, plus lots of enthusiasm, energy, and talent.

We’d encourage you to pay close attention to each of the horses on the carousel. They’re each carrying presents destined for familiar characters, each of their names has hidden (or not-so-hidden) meaning, and there are other fun little things you’ll spot. Plus, the level of detail on the horses is just really impressive.

yacht club disney christmas

There are also 19 hidden Mickeys, and the sign challenges you to find them all.

Since I don’t want to spoil that fun scavenger hunt (and also because I didn’t find them all… but mostly the former ), I don’t have photos of each hidden Mickey location.

yacht club disney christmas

Daisy and Donald are not featured prominently in the gingerbread carousel, and you might not even see them if you stay on the ground level. I went to the walkway on the second floor to snap this photo of the carousel topper.

This is a pretty character-light design for the gingerbread carousel as compared to other years, which is fine by me.

yacht club disney christmas

Beach Club’s gingerbread carousel takes center stage, but there are a ton of ornaments and decorations around the resort. These are very different from what we saw at Yacht Club, which is focuses mostly (and fittingly) on the vessels.

At Beach Club, the other holiday decor is mostly aquatic-colored and ocean-themed, with an abundance of sea life:

yacht club disney christmas

We first visited Beach Club at Christmas-time over a decade ago, and Sarah immediately fell in love with the style of Beach Club’s decorations. She started collecting ornaments for an ocean-themed Christmas tree that we’d display someday in our house. Over the years, she’s collected some cool stuff: blown-glass fish, Santa riding a sea turtle, manatees (my contribution), and even a very similar seahorse as the one pictured above. The full tree is a work in progress, but we’ll get there…someday.

Anyway, Disney’s Beach Club Resort is a pretty cool place to visit at Christmas-time. The gingerbread carousel is the main draw–for good reason–but the other decorations are thematically appropriate, varied, and worth checking out. It’s not as ornate and elaborate as Yacht Club, but there is a tremendous amount of variety around the resort. We’d encourage you to pay especially close attention while walking through the hallway between Yacht Club and Beach Club, as it’s interesting to see the decorations transition as you go from one resort to the other.

Finally, a few plugs. First, the 2018 edition of our free Vacation Kingdom at Christmas eBook is now available for download! Tom – do you know what happens to the displays after Christmas? I thought I read somewhere that much of it is used in AK for food.

Great post Tom! For the carousel photos, I think we saw you around the time you were taking them. Thanks for not judging the weird stranger who stopped you to compliment the two of you on your blog. 🙂

Wishing you and Sarah a happy holiday season!

'Nothing left': After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

I n an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades' worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, "The CYC is gone."

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn," Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It's clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There's nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club's prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn't know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club's founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we'd lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members' racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what's next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club's ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club's continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don't think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe's because it's more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe's and Recreational Equipment Inc.
