Closer to Africa than Spain, the Canary Islands are an Atlantic Ocean tropical paradise where sailing is possible almost year-round.

Though on the discovery of the islands by the Romans in the 1st Century AD they recorded them as uninhabited, in the 15th Century when Spain rediscovered and claimed them for herself there were natives that lived a basic tribal lifestyle. The ''Guanches" were subjugated as so many other native populations facing European empires, and often not without a fight.

The islands have seen boom times and bust throughout the last six hundred years. There was mass emigration to the Caribbean and South America in the 18th Century as those Spanish colonies competed with them for manpower and industry, with an estimated 50,000 Canarians heading to the western reaches of the Spanish empire.

In the 1970s boom came back to the islands as General Franco opened them up to tourism for revenues. Lanzarote and Tenerife became bywords for cheap package holidays. Thankfully the artist and hero of the islands Cesar Manrique fought to conserve much of the natural jewels and colonial architecture against the rapaciousness of 'progress'.

From a yachting perspective, the Volvo Ocean race now starts from the islands and they are a sailor's paradise. The North-East Trade Winds are so reliable and steady that you won't want to leave the boat! A Canary Islands yacht charter is a fantastic way of getting about the Canaries sailing area - do bring your walking boots as from various ports and anchorages you can explore everything from tropical forest to volcanic moonscapes and even the highest mountain in Spain, Teide. Wine and local gastronomy are other favourite activities - the latter to refuel you from a blast at sea and a walk up a mountain, with the former to relax those aching muscles! Did we say sandy beaches? Whether black or white sand you're spoiled for choice.

Hiring A Yacht In the Canary Islands

As an autonomous region of Spain, you will find that luxury yacht charter in the Canaries is as easy as on the mainland.

On a bareboat charter, you will need the sailing licenses that qualified you to take the vessel out in the first place. You will pay the fee and after a walk around the vessel to ensure you know what's what and how it works (as well as any wear and tear) you can slip your lines and get out to feel those trade winds!

Don't forget to bring either yacht charter insurance or a credit card with enough space on it for a refundable deposit.

There are the same issues as a Spanish mainland yacht charter too - keep your paperwork handy as the Garda Civil like to ensure that everyone is legal in their waters and are known to check paperwork while at sea in spot checks.

While Africa is a day's sail from the islands we would recommend you stay within the archipelago as there is enough fun to be hard to get around and between the islands themselves! With a climate that is described as 'eternal springtime', you'll find that the sailing conditions are almost invariably perfect. While in Northern Europe you may remember one summer's day with the crew sitting on the windward rail with foot wide grins on their faces, this can be a bit routine when island hopping in the Canary Islands!

Getting to the Canaries

There are direct flights from several airports in the UK. There are five airports on the four main islands, and ferry links to the smaller inhabited islands beyond. Once in the country in most cases, you can take a bus to the marina. Taxis a lot more expensive and save you very little walking over catching a bus.

Let's look at the five airports.

Las Palmas (LPA): For acess to all Gran Canaria yacht charters.

La Palma (SPC): Not to be confused with the Gran Canaria airport! This is for La Palma island.

Lanzarote : For access to all Lanzarote yacht charters

Tenerife North (TFN): For the north of Tenerife

Tenerife South (TFS): For the south of the island.

Ferries: The islands of La Gomera and El Hieroo for example lack international airports but can be accessed by regular ferries and public transport,

Best Areas To Charter

The island with everything? Spain's highest mountain Tiede and its almost Moon-like terrain can be completely forgotten as you party til dawn at the Playa las Americas on the south of Tenerife. Black sandy beaches and high cliffs are other features, while just off the coast you will see Great Whales feeding off the plankton in the rich ocean currents.

Las Galletas

Tenerife has some wild parties but you won't find them in Las Galletas. Northern Europeans are famous for going overboard but Southern Europeans can go on all night without the police being needed to keep the peace. Las Galletas is very Southern European! It is a fishing port with seafront restaurants serving food that will blow your mind, and you can do a tapas run late into the night without crazies causing you problems. To recover? Enjoy the volcanic beach - a perfect adult retreat.

A yachtie's paradise with a large marina on the NE coast in the lee of Tenerife, you will soon find the black sands of the Playa de la Nea a very hot but different attraction to those of other towns. The restaurants and bars are appealing with a variety on offer. A good port of entry to Tenerife if island hopping - but you could easily be absorbed by the refreshments inside and close to the marina.

Another volcanic island that last saw eruptions in the 18th Century, Lanzarote is one of those places with human and natural history that will beguile you and stay with you long into the future. Much of the island's current economy is tourism but there are gems - try popping by the volcanic Timanfaya National Park and the island's former capital of Teguise that hasn't been overrun with tourists in recent years.

The tourism and commercial centre of Lanzarote you can choose to come back to the boat at dawn or to be on deck fresh-faced at sunrise with just a decent coffee in your system. For those of the latter persuasion do visit the two colonial castles and the Charco de San Ginés saltwater lagoon in the centre of town. The museum of modern art could well be fun, as well as the fine dining and great wines.

Gran Canaria

A continent in miniature - lush forest in the northwest, desert in the south and mountains in the interior. Though the third largest island in the Canaries Gran Canaria is the most populous and one of the busiest tourist destinations of all. The different terrains have their own microclimates too, with mountain weather in the middle giving way to high heat in the wind shadow and to the north, perfect growing conditions for natural and agricultural flora.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

This is the cosmopolitan, beating heart of the island. For those who want tinnitus from music throbbing through their skulls, you won't be disappointed as some of the world's top DJ acts play the night away. Las Palmas does manage to be a party town without losing the plot as certain other tourist towns such as those in the Balearic Islands seem to have done. You can eat well and enjoy adult or family fun without getting stuck in the 18-30 crowd!

Fuerteventura

With Unesco Biosphere Reserve status, Fuerteventura is the nearest Canary Island to Africa and probably best described a 'desert island'. Its dry volcanic landscape dominates, and for those bored of its 150km of beautiful beaches, goats cheese and excellent cuisine you will soon find solace in the world-beating sailing and kite surfing conditions.

Best Towns To Charter A Yacht In the Canary Islands

Radazul, tenerife.

Without a doubt one of the best marinas on the island, you can use it as a jumping-off point to head east to Gran Canaria or simply to explore the coast of the island itself. The best airport is Tenerife North.

Las Galletas, Tenerife

A chilled fishing port on the south of the island, Las Galettas could be used to explore the west coast or island-hop to La Gomera and beyond to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The best airport is Tenerife South.

Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

The main city of the island. Has its own airport. Good for island hopping west to Tenerife, exploring the island itself or east to Fuerteventura.

Marina Lanzarote, Arrecife

Lanzarote's main charter marina is in the capital of the island, Arrecife on the east coast of the island. This is a good spot for circumnavigating the island or heading to nearby Fuerteventura for its legendary sailing.

Santa Cruz, La Palma

On the east of La Palma and with access to the rest of the Canary Island chain is the capital of La Palma, Santa Cruz. This is a buzzing tourist town with its own airport. Sail from here to explore the island or head off to the other islands in the archipelago.

Tazacorte, La Palma

On the west of the island of La Palma near Tazacorte, you will find several marinas with yacht charters available. This is good for sailing around the island but for the more adventurous, heading east and island hopping to the other Canary Islands.

Types Of Yachts To Hire

Where it comes to charter yachts you can hire a motor cruiser, a monohull sailing yacht or a catamaran . Each has their benefits.

Motor Yacht Charter

A motorboat charter can be just the way to chill out and enjoy life afloat on a luxury yacht. The wind doesn't stop you from going too far in any direction as upwind or down you still have the 'D-sails' pushing you. Motorboats come in a variety of sizes but all are well-appointed, often with en suite toilets and showers in all the cabins. These can cost anything from €450 per day and up.

Monohull Sailing Yacht Charter

The Canary Islands are a sailing purist's wet dream so why not go the whole hog and have a blast on a luxury yacht that's as happy on a beat as it is on a run or reaches? Watch the crew with their foot wide grins on their faces, sitting on the windward rail as you blast along in near perfect sailing conditions! Always comfortable and fun to sail, the monohull yacht charter can be quite economical, costing as little as €120 per day.

Canary Island Catamaran Charter

Very comfortable and going like a scalded cat when the wind is aft of the beam, a catamaran is just the thing for a luxury yacht charter on one of the planet's sailing paradises. Spacious and comfortable, and very manoeuvrable, their shallow drafts allow you to moor far closer to shore than other boats - perhaps while you have a barbecue in a secluded cove? A catamaran charter will set you back €450 a day and up.

Skippered Yacht charter or Bareboat?

Where it comes to a Canary Islands yacht charter you have two choices for your sailing trip - a bareboat charter or skippered yacht charter. Both have their own advantages.

Skippered charter

You don't need to be an experienced sailor for a Canary Island yacht charter. Why? You can hire a skipper to go with the boat. He or she will be able to get you wherever you want to go. If you want to play a role in sail handling and all the fun of getting the boat around one of the world's sailing Meccas then they will guide you through everything from helming to sail handling. If you're feeling a bit ropey from too much goat's cheese and Canary Island wine then you can chill and let them carry you a bit. Don't forget the tip at the end of the trip!

Bareboat yacht

For more adventurous types, a Canary Island bareboat charter could be your thing. If you have the right sailing qualifications (see below) then you can let go of the lines and go on your adventure around one of the best places to sail on the planet. Do remember to bring your license with you as the authorities can be a bit hot on paperwork!

Do you need a licence to charter in the Canaries?

If you want to bareboat charter you will need an approved boating qualification, below is a list of relevant qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence (ICC): Standard European Qualification for bareboat sailing

ASA 104 Bareboat sailing certificate : The American Sailing Associations skipper minimum qualification for hiring bareboat yachts

RYA: The Royal Yachting Association's qualifications (minimum day skipper level) is necessary for bareboat charter hire, it's also worthwhile seeing do you need to have done a VHF radio course, as well as some boat owners, will require this.

There are also many other European national boating qualifications that are accepted here too, it's worthwhile checking these details before hiring.

If you want a skippered boat rental as a charter yacht then you don't need any sailing certification at all, you just turn up and off you go.

Best Times To Hire

Being semi-tropical the Canary Islands are a year-round sailing destination. It does get cooler in winter but a Northern European would soon find themselves in a teeshirt come mid-morning - no need for woollies and mittens here! The sailing season as such might be said to be 365 days a year.

The quieter months can bring a bigger trade wind but you pay a lot less and can still enjoy a winter escape sailing holiday. If you can get over during school term times it will be quieter and cheaper too.

As ever, July and August is very busy as the world seems to stop for their summer breaks. It can get hot (but nothing like Athens for example thanks to the sea cooling the air) but also quite crowded.

It ultimately depends on what you want from a yacht charter in the Canary Islands - the buzz and fun from mad crowds or a quiet escape to the sunshine from the grey skies and drizzle of home?

The Climate

The archipelago sits at the northernmost reach of the NE Trade Winds, so you are almost guaranteed a steady wind for sailing every day throughout the year. The wind can build and you can be challenged under a reef or two on an odd day but come summer it is just about a perfect Force 4-5.

The weather itself can vary from island to island. Mountains cause their own weather by forcing moist air upwards where it unloads as rain. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are two islands where you will feel the temperature drop and grey skies roll in to moisten and green the land. With these weather systems comes a changing wind direction but offshore you'll soon feel the trade winds again.

The flatter islands - Lanzarote and Fuerteventura - are more consistent in weather patterns with it cooling to around 15 degrees C in winter and heating to not much more than 25 degrees in summer. Do bring some warmer clothes but even in winter, they may never come out of the bag!

How much does it cost for a Canary Islands Charter?

There's a yacht charter to suit every budget in the Canary Islands. If you have a large budget you can charter a superyacht for opulent luxury as you waft around the best places in the islands for €35,000 a day and up.

For those with a midrange budget, you can still get a very comfortable sailing yacht or motorboat for as little as €450 a day. A sailing catamaran is a classic example with en suite heads and showers in most of the staterooms and plenty of socialising and entertaining space on deck.

At the lower end of the scale expect to pay €120 a day for a monohull sailing yacht. Cheap isn't boring either - better upwind you can get about more easily without relying too much on the engine to get where you want to go.

On top of this you will need space on your credit card for a security deposit (or pay yacht charter insurance in advance) as well as food, fuel and nights out. Don't forget money for marina fees too!

Explore the Canaries By Renting A Yacht

With some of the best year-round sailing conditions on the planet, you can explore the Canaries by renting a yacht from Borrow A Boat for a price that won't break the bank. See the marine life from humpback whales to dolphins and sea birds. Enjoy the wild volcanic landscape, or party until dawn at a world-famous nightspot. The Canary Islands are paradise islands with all you could possibly want from a holiday, no matter your age or sailing experience!

Frequently asked questions

Yacht hire in the Canaries are legal, and a major part of the tourist economy. You will find a wide choice of yachts available at just the right price point that suits your budget and needs.

You can hire a catamaran, superyacht, motorboat or monohull sailing yacht in the Canary Islands. If you have a smaller budget you can hire a RIB to explore the coastline too for a day on the water.

Your budget comes at the top of the list. The next thing to consider is your sailing skills and experience and where you can get to based on that. What do you want from a Canary Islands sailing holiday? With these in mind you can narrow down your options.

You can sail in the Canaries in the winter months. It is cool but not cold, so you can get some winter sun from your sailing holiday. It never gets too hot or too cold so you can escape the fierce heat of summer or the freezing gales of winter. July and August are busiest but is busy always the best?

Yes you do. You will have to pay 50% on booking the yacht hire and the rest on arrival. You will also need space on your credit card for a security deposit against damage you may make to the boat.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to/are on a mooring you will be able to phone a number given by the yacht charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter you want to book and where do you want to go. Get the weather forecast for a week ahead the day before you go - bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm.

The Canaries are a part of Spain and in the European Union. This means that if you are from within the EU you will not require a visa. Most English speaking countries have a tourist visa waiver deal with the EU so in those cases you will not need one. If in doubt contact the Spanish embassy in your country.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Tenerife

Sailing in the beautiful waters of Tenerife offers an experience like no other. Whether you’re an adventurous soul looking to conquer the waves or seeking a relaxing escape amidst stunning vistas, the choice between sailing a boat or catamaran can shape your journey. Allow us to guide you through these two unique options, each providing its charm and features, ensuring you make the right choice for your nautical adventure in Tenerife.

Sailing Boat

A sailing boat is an epitome of grace and classic elegance on the sea. Ideal for the true sailing enthusiasts, sailing boats provide an authentic and intimate connection with the ocean. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Maneuverability : Sailing boats offer excellent control and responsiveness, allowing you to navigate even the tightest corners of Tenerife’s diverse coastline.
  • Intimate Experience : Generally smaller than catamarans, sailing boats offer a more personal experience, perfect for romantic getaways or small gatherings of friends and family.
  • Performance : For those seeking the thrill of traditional sailing, a monohull sailing boat delivers an exciting ride, leaning into the wind and cutting through waves.
  • Fuel Efficiency : Sailing boats tend to consume less fuel when under engine power, making them a more eco-friendly option.
  • Accessibility : With a variety of sizes and configurations, sailing boats can access secluded bays and hidden beaches, providing a chance to explore Tenerife’s lesser-known treasures.

Catamarans, with their twin hulls and broad decks, are known for stability and space. They offer a distinctive sailing experience that appeals to both novices and experienced sailors. Here’s what sets catamarans apart:

  • Stability : Catamarans provide a stable and smooth ride, minimizing the risk of seasickness. This makes them suitable for families with children or those new to sailing.
  • Space and Comfort : With expansive lounging areas, catamarans offer more room for relaxation and entertainment, great for larger groups or those wanting extra comfort.
  • Shallow Draft : The shallow draft of a catamaran allows access to shallow waters, opening up more exploration opportunities along Tenerife’s coast.
  • Speed : Under certain wind conditions, catamarans can achieve impressive speeds, adding an exhilarating touch to your journey.
  • Visibility : The elevated helm position and wide deck design offer excellent visibility, enhancing safety and navigation.

Whether to sail a sailing boat or catamaran in Tenerife depends on your preferences, group size, and the kind of experience you seek. For the purists who enjoy the thrill of traditional sailing, a sailing boat is the way to go. For those looking for stability, space, and comfort, a catamaran offers an unmatched experience.

At Yachting.Rent, we provide both options, all meticulously maintained and equipped with modern amenities. Our knowledgeable staff will be more than happy to assist you in selecting the perfect vessel for your unforgettable adventure in Tenerife. Let the winds guide you, and set sail into the mesmerizing beauty of the island with the confidence that you’ve made the right choice.

The price of a bareboat charter in the Canary Islands will differ depending on where exactly you’re looking to charter. The price will also be higher or lower depending on the time of year, how many people are on board and the size and type of vessel you choose. Below are some average prices of a bareboat in the Canary Islands by vessel type.

€1,700/week in the high season and €1,600/week in the low season for 8 people.

Of course, there aren't jet skis with a skipper on board, as you will be the one driving! The price of a jet ski rental is about €150/day for 2 people.

We don’t have any bareboat yacht charters, but we have skippered yachts for about €8,400/week for 10 people.

What can you see and do on a boat rental in the Canary Islands?

No matter where you decide to go in the archipelago, one thing is for sure: you’ll never be bored! The Canary Islands offers something for every kind of tourist so even if you’re travelling with a big group, you don’t have to worry that someone won’t enjoy themselves. Here are some of the must-see stops while onboard a boat rental in the Canaries:

  • Tenerife's Teide volcano: The Del Teide volcano is the highest point in the Canaries and rises above Las Canadas National Park.
  • Las Palmas in Gran Canaria : Looking for a place that is vibrant and full of energy? Then be sure to visit the island's capital Las Palmas. Here you will find museums and a beautiful old town. Vegueta, the old part of the city will delight you with its unique charm, tangle of streets and historic architecture.
  • The Los Gigantes Cliffs in Tenerife: These majestic basalt walls rise over 600 metres, and will surely remain in your memory for a long time. The area is worth visiting by boat, especially since there are quite a few dolphins and whales swimming around!
  • Corralejo National Park in Fuerteventura: It is famous for its dunes which are overflowing with white and golden sand from the Sahara Desert. Be sure to try kite surfing!
  • Papagayo in Lanzarote : This is definitely the perfect place for all beach lovers. Here you will find hidden in volcanic coves, white beaches and emerald water.
  • Maspalomas in Gran Canaria: An ideal place for hiking with numerous viewpoints. Visitors can enjoy the zoo, the famous nature reserve and a lighthouse that dates back to the 19th century.
  • Poema del Mar in Gran Canaria: Are you fascinated by the underwater world? How about a walk through an underwater tunnel leading through an aquarium? Go to Poema del Mar Oceanarium and learn about marine ecosystems from across the globe.
  • Puerto de Mogan in Gran Canaria: If you love the charm of coastal towns, then definitely plan your stop in Puerto de Mogan. It's famous for its charming white houses decorated with colourful flowers, and a Friday market with local specialities and products.

The Canary Islands are an ideal winter destination if you’re looking to escape the cold. You’ll almost always have sunshine and warm weather no matter which time of year you decide to visit. If you’re dreaming of a holiday sailing in the middle of the sea but lack a boating licence, don't worry! With Click&Boat you can have a skipper on board your yacht charter in the Canary Islands. Let a professional skipper take over the helm as well as take care of all the manoeuvring and navigation for you. It’s true that a skippered boat rental is typically more expensive than a bareboat, or it may come at an extra cost, but it is well worth it! There is no one that knows the best routes, local attractions and hidden coves better than the local sailor. They will help you see everything on your sailing itinerary and more, which makes for a more personalised experience on board. Put yourself in the hands of a professional and enjoy blissful relaxation on board with family and friends. An unforgettable holiday is guaranteed!

What type of boat is best for a Canary Island yacht charter?

Still can’t decide which type of boat to choose for your yacht charter in the Canary Islands? The boat you choose will depend on the type of holiday you’re looking to have. If you only want to rent a boat for a day or two, a motorboat or RIB is the best option to see everything in no time, and they are typically rented by the day! However, if you fancy a longer holiday of a week or more, you’ll need a vessel which can accommodate all of your needs which includes amenities on board such as a cabin for sleeping, a kitchen, a bathroom and of course, a sunbathing area! Catamarans and yachts are equipped with extra comforts to cater to you while you enjoy a longer stay on the water. If you have a lot of sailing experience, you might like to try a sailboat, but be advised that they are unstable vessels and because of this, they can be difficult to manoeuvre if you lack sailing fundamentals, and they aren’t good for seasickness!

In the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands, the ultimate yacht charter destination

The Canary Islands, also known as the lucky islands, are located in the northwest of the African continent, submerged in the Atlantic Ocean and made up of 8 islands. Thanks to its subtropical climate, it is said that the Canary Islands live under an eternal spring, as its thermal oscillation is 6ºC between the different seasons of the year. The average temperature in the Canaries is between 19 and 25ºC (66.20 and 77ºF). The western Canary Islands such as Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma, El Hierro and Gran Canaria offer a more humid climate, with more vegetation, high mountains and ravines that make these islands an idyllic place for whale and dolphin watching. You'll also find unspoilt beaches of black volcanic sand where you can anchor under cliffs. There are many tricks to sailing between islands as there are areas of wind acceleration, hidden beaches, comfortable and uncomfortable places, but don't worry the Ecc Yacht Charter team will take care of giving you all the advice you need to have a great holiday. As for the eastern Canary Islands such as Lanzarote, La Graciosa, Fuerteventura and the islet of Lobos, they offer a rather more arid climate, they are drier islands as they are so close to Africa, in fact, it is common to find the famous Calima; sand from the Sahara desert that remains in the air in suspension which makes the temperatures rise and enjoy a warmer climate. These islands are perfect for enjoying dreamy anchorages, yellow sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. To find out more about routes, anchorages, activities and restaurants visit our website. You will also find tips for sailing between islands.

The attractions of sailing around the Canary Islands

The Canary archipelago, thanks to the moderate winds from the north-east known as the trade winds and the proximity of the islands, is considered a European sailing paradise. During the months of April and September the trade winds tend to blow more strongly and consistently, making this "dry" season one of the best for enjoying a holiday focused on sailing and movement between islands. During the wet season, the months of October to March, winds tend to be more unpredictable and can vary more frequently between north and southeast, but winds from the west can occasionally be encountered. From Ecc Yacht Charter we put at your disposal bases in Lanzarote and Tenerife, which, from our point of view as local sailors of the islands, are reference points for inter-island sailing.

Yacht Charter Canary Islands

Why go sailing in the canary islands.

You want to sail Europe in winter, but still feel like you’ve come to an exotic place? If so, yacht charter in the Canary Islands , known as the “ Fortunate Isles ”, is the perfect decision for you. Thanks to its biodiversity, the Canary Islands are like a miniature continent. Yacht charter in the Canary Islands offers you more than 150 km of pristine sand beaches and emerald-green waters in a windsurfers’ mecca – Fuerteventura. On Lanzarote Island , you will feel like you are on the Moon thanks to the lunar landscape and lava tubes. On La Palma Island , you can look at the stars in one of the several observatories.

Choose Your Perfect Boat in the Canary Islands

Sailboat

Sailing Conditions in the Canary Islands

When sailing Canary Islands , you will feel that the climate changes from island to island, however, the whole archipelago enjoys a mild and gentle tropical and desertic climate. Here, it never gets too hot, and it doesn’t ever get cold. Despite being closer to the Equator than to Europe, summers in this area are not that hot thanks to the trade winds. Such a perfect weather is one of the main reasons why the Canaries are a desirable boat rental destination. The westernmost islands of the archipelago — La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma — are greener than the others, whereas Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are arid and dryer because of their proximity to the African continent. The water temperature is mild all year long, with an average of 18°C in January.

Sailing Conditions in the Canary Islands

Regarding the winds, the months between June and October are the best time to sail in Canary Islands , thanks to the northern winds. African winds from SW (like Calima wind, which brings sand from the Sahara Desert) come to the scene in the spring and late summer, while the direction and strength of these winds is very unpredictable between December and March. Here, the WAZ or Wind Acceleration Zones deserve a special mention. These are tunnels between islands where the wind is funnelled, and its speed is increased by 10-15 knots. It is always desirable to check the locations of the WAZ , when you decide to charter a yacht in Canary Islands since the strength of wind in these areas can go from calm to strong in a matter of minutes.

Waves can get big in the archipelago area, up to 5 meters in the most exposed areas of the different islands, depending on the climate. Meanwhile, the tide movements are like those of other Atlantic areas close to the Canary Islands. Tidal range rarely gets over 2.8 m , while tidal streams don’t go beyond three knots.

Taking all this into account, the Canary Islands are definitely a prime yacht charter destination when it comes to sailing Europe in winter . The weather, water and wind conditions are really good during this season, and choosing to sail in the Canaries is a fantastic way to escape European ‘real winters’ - low temperatures, freezing water and crazy waves. However, don’t hesitate to sail in Canary Islands during the summer, too. As we have already explained, the temperatures are not that high in the summer. Besides that, the Canary Islands have one more advantage - the summer season is the low season of the year and there will be no crowds.

Top Reasons to Visit the Canary Islands

Charter a yacht in Canary Islands as this archipelago has a lot to offer to sailors in terms of landscapes and cities to visit on its seven islands .

Tenerife is the biggest island in the archipelago, which offers great nightlife and wonderful beaches to explore on your boat rental The highest peak in Spain - the Teide (3,718 m) - is located here, and it was named World Heritage Site back in 2007. When in Santa Cruz de Tenerife you should visit the famous Carnival , second largest in the world, right after the carnival in Rio. Go from tropical to something completely different if you decide to visit Loro Parque , one of the best zoos in the world with lots of snow and the largest penguinariums in the world.

When sailing in Gran Canaria you can find similar landscapes, atmosphere and tropical vibe like on Tenerife. The capital - Las Palmas - is a vibrant city with a rich Spanish history and culture. Its harbour, Puerto de la Luz, is one of the most important harbours in Europe.

Fuerteventura Island was named biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2009 and it’s been, for years, a prime destination in Europe for all kinds of water sports. Why? Because of favourable winds, powerful waves and a rich underwater life. Sounds like a great choice for a sailing holiday on a chartered yacht or catamaran.

Top Reasons to Visit the Canary Islands - Gran Canaria

You can also opt for a boat hire in Lanzarote , the most volcanic island in the archipelago of Canary Islands. Its black-sand volcanic beaches and the Timanfaya Park are the most popular spots on this sparsely populated island.

Yacht charter in the Canary Islands also offers you the opportunity to explore the ancient laurel forests in Garajonay National Park on La Gomera Island and explore 46 dive sites full of volcanic features and spectacular marine life on El Hierro Island.

In a nutshell, the Canary Islands region is a place you will never get tired of discovering! A great weather all year round, thousands of beaches, astonishing natural beauties - and all of this without leaving Europe. This is what draws more than 12 million tourists to the Canaries each year, making it such an intriguing sailing destination .

The history of the Canary Islands according to carbon dating of archaeological remains states the earliest settlement dates to 2000BC. Some people believe that the Canary Islands are the remains of the legendary Atlantis. Also, the myth of there being another island in the archipelago is believed widely by the Canary people. It is called the island of San Borondón. According to myth, Saint Brendan, an Irish monk, along with other monks landed on San Borondón. Having spent 6 years on the island one day it began to mysteriously move. The many different versions of the folklore state that either the island turned out to be a gigantic sea creature with no detail of their exact escape or that the island sunk into the sea. Some depictions of the island are viewable on older maps such as one by William Delisle. In the Canary Islands, the people call a person who appears from time to time as San Borondón. By chartering a yacht to the Canary Islands, you could take your own chances at viewing this magical island from the coasts of La Palma or El Hierro.

Ideal route for yacht charter in the Canary Islands

Ideally, your yacht charter in the Canary Islands cruise should start from the north starting with Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, then to Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma. There are 16 ports in Canary Archipelago and every island has at least one. The first stop at Lanzarote is one you will not forget. The Green Caves, or Los Verdes Cave, once a shelter from pirates, is a volcanic realm where you can see the whimsical shapes created by solidified molten lava that were created more than 5000 years ago by the eruption of the La Coron volcano. Another place to visit on the island before setting sail is César Manrique Fondation, Volcano House. This 3000 square meter home was built inside a lava coulee with a naturally fed pool, 5 enchanting volcanic chambers with underground trees. A spectacular architectural site for all ages. The next stop on this two-part tour is the island Fuerteventura. The first stop should be the quiet Costa Calma beach. Located in the south of the island, 10km of beach with expansive white sand and tranquil warm waters is ideal for setting foot on mainland. The next beach to go to is located on the Isle of Lobos, north of Fuerteventura is an ideal starting place for a day of exploration. Only accessible by boat, its islet is perfect for a refreshing dive. It is a nature reserve fully protected by a natural park that boasts beautiful white sand beaches with calm turquoise waters.

Heading to the west of the archipelago, your first stop should be Gran Canaria. One of the capitals of the Canary Islands, this island holds treasures at every turn. With berths for all boats, Puerto de Mogán is a small costal village featuring charming color trimmed architecture and seawater canals. To take a break from the beaches take a stroll through Vegueta Old Town. Discover the stories that are embedded in the architecture of the city. Late-Gothic and Renaissance are just two styles you will see on this discovery journey through the city. Your second stop is Tenerife the largest island in the Canary Islands. Not only is the island home to the island’s second capital but Europe’s largest water park, Siam Park. With water slides up to 92ft with dense tropical vegetation, this is an experience for kids and adults alike. La Laguna Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a great interpretation of a protected town inspired by principles of navigation. Its original Spanish colonial architecture is like stepping back in time. Sailing to La Gomera head first to Los Roques Viewpoints, which are said to be the five guardian rocks over the entrance of the Garajonay National Park. These colossal rocks were formed by magma that never came to the earth’s surface but were made visible through erosion. They offer stunning views of the island, ideal for the perfect picture. On top of a big basalt wall by the sea the small town of Agulo awaits every traveler. The stoned streets and tiled houses are just a small part of its attractiveness, which you get the opportunity to peak at from your yacht charter in the Canary Islands. El Hierro, the smallest island in the Canary Islands, holds so much more than anyone could imagine! One of the most enchanting places on the island is El Hierro’s Charco Azul. This is a natural seawater pool in the El Golfo valley that speaks to the historic volcanoes on the island and the gifts it gives to its people. Not only can you bathe in the warm water but also lounge on the wooden deck. Along with protection from the sun you will be captivated by this earthly wonder. The ancient people of El Hierro depended on the sacred Garoé Tree for water. Once able to provide enough water to the entire population of the island it gained its fame as a sacred tree. It was knocked down in the 17th century by a hurricane and has since been replaced with a lime tree still viewable today. Last on the yacht tour is the island of La Palma, get lost in Los Tilos Forest, which was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2002. You can’t forget visiting Santa Cruz de La Palma Old Town, not only a historic port but a very artistic town. Its port was integral on the route from Europe to the colonies in Americas. However, the architecture of the town can be like that of a paint chart. Multiple hues of colors on every single home on the cobbled streets, they give a real Caribbean feel.. The Canary Islands are all very different yet harmonious at the same time. Once you at one island, you will be craving view of the other islands.

All inclusive

Typically this includes all your breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks. Standard Ship's Bar which includes your alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages. Fuel for the yacht and its tender, and the necessary water for the onboard facilities. Use of the Yacht’s onboard equipment and the Captain, Chef and Crew’s services.

Excluded are airport transfers costs, onshore excursions and tours, as well as any food or beverages purchased ashore. Although optional, crew gratuity is customary at 15% - 20% of the charter rate for the Caribbean and 10% - 15% for the Mediterranean.

Plus Expenses

Included are the Yacht and its onboard equipment as well as the Captain, Chef and Crew’s services.

Excluded are food and beverages, fuel for the yacht and its tender, any dockage, airport transfers costs, onshore excursions and tours, as well as any cruising permits, licenses and other charter related expenses. Crew gratuity, although optional is customary at 15% - 20% of the charter rate for the Caribbean and 10% - 15% for the Mediterranean.

Advanced Provisioning Allowance:

For "Plus Expenses" charters, yachts request an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), which is generally estimated at 20% - 25% of the base charter fee for sailing yachts (catamarans and monohulls) and at 30%-35% for motor yachts. The APA essentially creates a bank account for the Captain to purchase provisions, fuel, dockage, food, beverages, bar, and other consumables on the charterer's behalf. The Captain will keep all receipts and manage a running balance of the account, so that expenditures can be checked at any time. Any amount not used will be refunded at the end of the charter. If during the charter the costs have exceeded the collected APA, then additional funds will be required for the outstanding bills. All purchases are transparent and nothing is marked up. The APA is used purely for the charterer's provisions and charter-related expenses.

Canary Islands

Renting a yacht in the Canaries with family or friends means enjoying the sun all year round, with the ocean for swimming! The annual average temperature for the water is 20°C, and for the air, is 25°, it’s non-stop springtime, a gentle climate all year round which allows you to enjoy the landscapes, between volcanoes , rich forests , dunes and fine sandy beaches. It is better to sail with the trade winds and upwind of the islands rather than downwind. The wind blows north/north-east and accelerates between the islands. It is these ‘venturis’ (acceleration in wind speed) that make sailing in the Canaries unique.

Canaries 1

The Canaries, the 7 island archipelago

The Canary Islands is an archipelago in the Atlantic ocean made up of seven main islands.

The islands within the Santa Cruz de Tenerife region:

  • El Hierro, with its translucent waters and the biodiversity on its seabed, make it the perfect spot for scuba diving.
  • La Gomera will surprise you with ravines that flow into the sea, valleys covered with green palm trees, black, sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, and its refreshing springs. A natural setting which constitutes a true biosphere reserve, with species already extinct elsewhere in the world.
  • La Palma is nicknamed ‘Isla Bonita’ by the locals, as it is blessed with almost unspoiled, extremely beautiful nature.
  • Tenerifeis the largest island in the archipelago and is dominated by the Teide volcano. It has beaches with yellow and black sand

Canaries

And also...

The islands within the Las Palmas region:

  • Fuerteventura, the arid, desert and windy island is very attractive because of its coast bordered by turquoise water.
  • Lanzarote, the most easterly island in the Canaries, is closest to Africa. Often called ‘ the black pearl ’ due to the almost black minerals which characterise it. The island has an incredible volcanic landscape .
  • Gran Canaria is one of the largest islands in the archipelago, with a particularly dynamic urban life. Rent a boat, with or without a skipper to see whales, walk through the Canarian pine forests, have fun at the water park, browse the shops, visit the museums… or just relax on a quiet beach.
  • The Chinjio archipelago is the largest marine reserve in Europe and the inhabited island of Lobos is a natural reserve, a paradise for birds.
  • The Canary Islands have one of the best climates in the world . With an impressive diversity of islands. It’s the perfect destination to rent a yacht.

Five bodies found inside superyacht that sank off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside a superyacht that sank in a sudden storm off Sicily , Salvatore Cocina, director of the island's Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News.

Cocina later confirmed to Sky News that a fifth body had been found and was being brought to shore. One passenger remains missing.

The identities of the bodies were not immediately released. Their recovery follows a dayslong search in the deep waters off Italy where British tech tycoon Mike Lynch  and several others were believed to be trapped in the hull. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived.

The rest had been missing since early Monday, when the Bayesian was caught in the storm anchored off the coast of Porticello, a village near the Sicilian capital city, Palermo.

The body of the ship’s cook, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national, was recovered Monday.

On Wednesday, NBC News witnessed what appeared to be at least three body bags being lifted from fire department boats after they pulled into port at Porticello. It was unclear whose bodies they were. Some were later transferred to ambulances and driven away from the dock.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing.

Bayesian yacht accident in Sicily

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was among the survivors rescued by a nearby vessel after they got into a lifeboat.

Built by the Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered yacht could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist boating sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was  acquitted of fraud by a San Francisco jury this year, stemming from the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Bloomer, who testified in his defense, and Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers, on the trip.

Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian, but in what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed  him Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

Claudio Lavanga and Claudia Rizzo reported from Porticello. Henry Austin reported from London.

Claudio Lavanga is Rome-based foreign correspondent for NBC News.

Claudia Rizzo is an Italy based journalist.

Seven bodies have been found after a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel named Bayesian when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday, with 15 people rescued.

Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far.

Seven people missing after British-flagged yacht capsizes in tornado off coast of Italy

What might have caused the sinking?

The British-flagged luxury vessel, named Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time on Monday morning off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.

It sank in as little as 60 seconds with 22 people on board, 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard.

Waterspouts, essentially tornados that form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said.

yacht rental canary islands

The yacht may have sunk faster with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said.

"I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said.

Official pictures show air conditioning units in several of the rooms, however, which could counter the suggestion open windows caused the vessel to sink faster.

The huge mast is also likely to have played a role, he added.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes.

Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph.

A waterspout is formed during a storm in the Mediterranean Sea, October 1, 2018. REUTERS/Alkis Konstantinidis

They can travel at about 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming".

"The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said.

"Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call."

Who owns the yacht?

The yacht belonged to the family of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch. He was confirmed to have died after rescuers found his body on Thursday. Mr Lynch was on holiday with his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who is still missing, and his wife Angela Bacares, who was rescued.

Mr Lynch, 59, was known as the " British Bill Gates " and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges, which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP). The yacht trip is believed to have been a celebration of the end of Mr Lynch's legal troubles.

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant.

Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. He always denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted.

Who was on board when the boat sank?

The passengers were largely British and American, with crew members were from New Zealand, South Africa, and Canada.

Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012.

Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready.

"Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA.

The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.

Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo. Divers confirmed on Thursday that their bodies had been recovered.

The yacht's captain James Cutfield survived, along with South African crew members Leah Randall and Katja Chicken.

Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, was the first to be found dead, the Italian Coastguard confirmed to Sky News.

During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily.

What do we know about the vessel?

The Bayesian is owned by a company controlled by Mr Lynch's wife.

It was known for its unusual 72.3m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on.

It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020.

It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites.

The luxury vessel , which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, could accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.

It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites.

Mr Schanck, of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications.

He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK Maritime Coastguard Agency regulations before its voyage.

It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites.
