Freeport and Lucaya are popular tourist destinations on land, however they are not a very well-known, nor popular, yacht charter destination in the bahamas. Off the coast of Florida, there is access to a sizable international airport to fly to as well as ferry boat service.

Although Freeport is the place where most of the commercial travel activity takes place, Lucaya is widely regarded as the place that best exemplifies the concept of a destination suitable for private sailing. It is possible to reach Lucaya from the southern shore by way of the Bell Channel, which is home to two opulent marinas. If you would prefer a setting that is less hectic, the Port Lucaya Marina, which is where most of the action takes place, is probably not the best choice for you. Instead, you might consider the Lucayan Village Marina, which has a more laid-back vibe. In either case, it is not common to find many charter yachts around this area.

In the event that you have the opportunity, you should take advantage of The Marketplace's 106 shops, restaurants, and drinking establishments. If you are interested in going to the casino or attending a concert at the Bahamian Resort and Casino, you will need to take a taxi to Freeport in order to do so. Freeport is also home to the International Bazaar, which you might also need to see.

You can go swimming and walking along the perfect beach that is located on the southern shore, or you can take a boat out to sea to explore diving and snorkeling locations. Both of these activities are available to you.

Located only 65 miles from Palm Beach, Florida , Freeport is the second largest populated city in the Bahamas .

Only rivalled by Nassau , Freeport offers a Bahamian cosmopolitan adventure for shoppers and party goers. Founded in 1955, the once neglected swamplands has now become a hive of activity which continues to bring in large numbers of tourists across the globe.

If you love to shop then you're in the right place. The city of Freeport operates under a free trade zone so the prices on some of your favourite things are cheaper here. Stock up on some of your essentials in the duty-free stores before leaving on your private yacht charter to explore the rest of the Bahamas.

If duty free isn't enough shopping for your needs then a must see in Freeport is the International Bazaar. Separated into different areas, each sub section represents different areas of the world such as the Middle Eastern sector. Within each area you can indulge in the various different cuisines from around the world and find many themed stores with trinkets and locally made souvenirs.

Another popular pull to Freeport is the Rand Nature Centre. Positioned in the centre of the city, the nature centre expands over 100 acres and is covered in pine trees. Walking through the Rand Nature Centre will allow you to see many native birds to the Bahamas and enjoy some magical forest like trails through the beautiful scenery. If nature and birding are your favorite pastimes the Garden of the Groves is also a must see.

After the shopping and bird adventures during the day, take the time to let your hair down in Downtown Freeport. Try some local cocktails in the bars and clubs and dance till the early hours before returning to your charter for the night.

Before leaving the area, make a stop about a mile and a half away from the coastline and adorn your scuba equipment. Perfect for intermediate and advanced divers Theo's Wreck sits 100 feet below the water's surface. Purposefully sunk and cleaned out, the 238 foot freighter sits on the edge of the continental shelf allowing divers some spectacular sights. With access to through the engine room and the cargo hold you can explore the freighter whilst encountering the new inhabitants including green moray eels, spotted eels and gargantuan jewfish.

The most convenient and easily navigated marina in the Bahamas. Grand Bahama Yacht Club is located in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island accommodating boats and yachts up to 200 ft. The GPS coordinates for the outer buoy at Bell Channel are 26° 29.879’N and 78° 37.800’W. Steer 340 degrees to the jetty. After entering Bell Channel, Grand Bahama Yacht Club is starboard where you will see the fuel dock.

Our family vacation was complete with Captain Ricco! We had the most amazing day fishing(at least 10 fish) snorkeling(even saw a shark),fabulous local food and see some dolphins.. we went through the water way in the way back which was so great. Captain was very knowledgeable about the area and spots!! We Highly recommend this excursion.

Our excursion with Captain Rico was great! We were a group of 25 that had some special requests and he was very accomodating. He knew I was concerned about making it back to the cruise ship on time but was able to get in all the fun acitivities. Snorkeling, private beach and jet skiing. The group agreed it was the highlight of the cruise!

We had a great time on this boat. Was waiting for us at marina. After a short phone call to acquaint us with boat we were off. Jet boat was a little different than what we are used to but was easy for everyone to drive. Lots of cozy seating, which we loved. Even had life vest for our five month old. Lucky we live on water and we’re able to pick up and drop off crew as needed. We brought subs and docked at peanut island for a picnic. Was a great day for a boat cruise. Most kids did full day. College age. Drop off was equally as easy. Just parked boat where we picked up. Wish I could share some pictures.

Easiest and best rental I’ve ever had in Miami. It was so good I took out the boat 2 days in a row!!! Everything was nice and easy communication was top notch and Christian walked me through everything. Thank you again and will definitely be renting from Christian next time I’m in Miami.

We came from Tampa to visit friends and rented Christian’s boat for the day. We met him at a public boat ramp as we previously arranged. He was very good about communicating prior to and during the experience. He even texted during our rental to make sure everything was satisfactory. He was on time like a Swiss Watch. Seriously. It was the perfect day. I would absolutely rent from him again. I suggest asking him about where you should go and where to eat lunch etc. He has obviously been doing this a while and is full of info. Definitely a satisfied customer.

Easy to book, Boat was like new, easy communication, easy pick up and drop off. We had 7 people and plenty of room. Had a great time! They checked in with us several times during the 8 hours to make sure everything was perfect. Booking with them again in 2 weeks.

Exercise increased caution in The Bahamas due to  crime . 

Country Summary : The majority of crime occurs on New Providence (Nassau) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) islands. In Nassau, practice increased vigilance in the “Over the Hill” area (south of Shirley Street) where gang-on-gang violence has resulted in a high homicide rate primarily affecting the local population. Violent crime, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, occur in both tourist and non-tourist areas. Be vigilant when staying at short-term vacation rental properties where private security companies do not have a presence.   

 Activities involving commercial recreational watercraft, including water tours, are not consistently regulated. Watercraft may be poorly maintained, and some operators may not have safety certifications.  Always review and heed local weather and marine alerts before engaging in water-based activities. Commercial watercraft operators have discretion to operate their vessels regardless of weather forecasts; injuries and fatalities have occurred. Due to these safety concerns, U.S. government personnel are not permitted to use independently operated jet-ski rentals on New Providence and Paradise Islands.   

Never swim alone, regardless of your age or level of swimming skills.  Keep within your fitness and swimming capabilities. Be mindful of sharks when swimming and engaging in water activities, as there have been recent fatal and non-fatal incidents involving sharks.  Be aware of weather and water conditions and heed local warnings.
