From September 10th to 15th the Cannes Yachting Festival rolls out the red carpet for the international yachting industry. Experience French flair on the Côte d'Azur and be inspired by our sailing yachts from the popular C-LINE.

Following the great success of the BAVARIA SR36 OPEN TOP, the shipyard from Giebelstadt is now presenting another Open-Top version and, with the BAVARIA SR33 OPEN TOP, is responding to the wishes of many customers for a uniquely open driving experience.

With a generous donation of a new set of sails, Bavaria Yachts from Giebelstadt is supporting the training of boat builders at the state vocational school for boat builders in Lübeck-Travemünde. The school, which is attended by students from almost all over Germany, benefits enormously from the support of the renowned Bavarian company.

When BAVARIA YACHTS invite you to its DEALER DAYS, everyone comes. This is because it is one of the major highlights of the year for the BAVARIA YACHTS dealer network, even if it largely consists of work.

Last week, the last BAVARIA VISION 42 was completed in Giebelstadt. On Friday morning, part of the BAVARIA YACHTS team gathered to give her a fitting farewell. The sailing yacht celebrated its premiere at the boot Düsseldorf in 2012 and the almost 13 metre long yacht was built in the shipyard for just over 12 years.

The Cheese Barge in London

Cheese is such a versatile food. From Lunchables providing me midday nourishment as a kid in the 90s to the adult version in the form of a charcuterie board. It brings flavor and texture to tacos, pasta dishes and salads, it gets breaded and deep-fried and so much more. Cheese has been a delicious part of life as far back as I can remember. Needless to say, I love cheese.

While walking around the Paddington area of London, I discovered a floating hub of cheese on the water near the little blue Paddington Bear statue: The Cheese Barge.

No matter if you just want a snack, a light meal, or a multi-course experience (all cheese-related), the Cheese Barge is here for you. I recommend starting with a three-British-cheese sampler with crackers and following that with the Smoked Lincolnshire Poacher cheese Spätzle. Then, you can share the Baked Baron Bigod cheese and finish the experience with a slice of milk chocolate cheesecake. The full menu is only available from 12-3 p.m. and 5:30-9:30 p.m. Fret not, they offer cheese boards and different types of grilled cheese sandwiches, including my favorite, the Green’s Fior di Latte Mozzarella, smoked bacon and chili honey, all day. Don’t see one of these suggestions when you visit? They are constantly switching up the menu with new great items for you to try. The Cheese Barge also offers a variety of red, white and orange wines, as well as cocktails and beers to pair with your cheese.

On Thursdays, from late November through late March, they offer a set fondue menu only. Who doesn’t have fun with fondue? You get to choose from either the monthly special fondue or the two regular fondues served with a side of cauliflower or truffle mashed potatoes. You can then end your night with the apple and plum crumble.

The Cheese Barge is not a large vessel, so booking in advance is highly recommended, even if you want to hop on in-between meals for a grilled cheese sandwich. Go to thecheesebar.com/paddington to book your table.

For those in other areas of London or the U.K., the Cheese Barge is part of a larger community of cheese-based restaurants under “The Cheese Bar” brand. In London, you can enjoy a cheese-based meal on Columbia Road, at the Seven Dials Market and the Camden Stables Market. You can also find them in North Yorkshire.

UK leader Starmer seeks to learn from Meloni’s tough migration policies at meeting in Rome

ROME — U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday praised the migration policies of Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni as the center-left British leader aimed to learn how her nationalist conservative government has made “remarkable progress” in reducing the number of migrants reaching Italy’s shores by boat.

The meeting in Rome between the two leaders came after at least eight seaborne migrants died off the French coast over the weekend trying to cross the English Channel.

The Labour Party prime minister isn’t a natural ally of Meloni, who heads the far-right Brothers of Italy party. But migration has climbed the U.K. political agenda, and Starmer hopes Italy’s tough approach can help him stop people fleeing war and poverty trying to cross the channel in flimsy, overcrowded boats.

More than 22,000 migrants have made the perilous crossing from France so far this year, a slight increase from the same period in 2023. Several dozen people have perished in their attempts, including the eight killed when a boat carrying about 60 people ran aground on rocks late Saturday.

The number of migrants arriving in Italy by boat in the first half of this year was down 60% from 2023, according to the country’s Interior Ministry, and migration formed the core of the leaders’ talks at the Villa Doria Pamphilj, a 17th-century mansion set in a large park not far from the Vatican.

At a joint news conference, Starmer said Italy had made “remarkable progress” by cracking down on smuggling gangs and “working with countries along migration routes as equals.”

Meloni pledged a crackdown on migration after taking office in 2022, aiming to deter would-be refugees from paying smugglers to make the dangerous Mediterranean crossing to Italy. Her government has signed deals with individual African countries including Tunisia to block departures, imposed limits on the work of humanitarian rescue ships, cracked down on traffickers and taken measures to deter people from setting off.

Italy also has signed a deal with Albania under which some adult male migrants rescued at sea while trying to reach Italy would be taken instead to Albania while their asylum claims are processed.

Meloni said Starmer had expressed interest in “new solutions” such as the Albania deal, and said she had filled him in. She said the processing centers in Albania, which had been due to open in August, would likely be up and running in a few weeks and that it was best to delay the opening until they were ready since the “eyes of the world” would be on them.

Starmer confirmed the two leaders had discussed the Albania model, but stressed that “we don’t know the outcome of it.”

Starmer wants to learn from Italy’s mix of tough enforcement and international cooperation, though Italy’s approach has been criticized by refugee groups and others alarmed by Europe’s increasingly strict asylum rules, growing xenophobia and hostile treatment of migrants.

The leader of Italy’s right-wing League, Matteo Salvin i, who is deputy prime minister in Meloni’s government, has been accused by prosecutors of alleged kidnapping for his decision to prevent a rescue ship carrying more than 100 migrants from landing in Italy when he was interior minister in 2019.

Meloni dismissed as “completely groundless” allegations that Italian plans like the Albania agreement risked violating migrants’ rights, saying they were covered by Italian legislation.

Starmer said he had no qualms about working with Meloni’s government.

“Italy is an ally,” he told reporters traveling with him to Rome. “I think the more we can collaborate and cooperate with our partners on a shared challenge, the better.”

Starmer toured Italy’s National Coordination Center for Immigration in Rome with newly appointed U.K. Border Security Commander Martin Hewitt. The government says Hewitt, a former head of Britain’s National Police Chiefs’ Council, will work with law enforcement and intelligence agencies in the U.K. and across Europe to tackle people-smuggling networks.

Before the trip, Starmer said there would be “no more gimmicks” — a reference to the previous Conservative government’s scuttled plan to send some asylum-seekers on a one-way trip to Rwanda, with no chance of returning to the U.K. even if their refugee claims were successful.

Starmer scrapped that plan soon after being elected in July.

The Conservatives said the deportation plan would act as a deterrent, but refugee and human rights groups called it unethical, judges ruled it illegal and Starmer dismissed it as an expensive gimmick.

Support for Ukraine was also on the agenda for the trip, part of Starmer’s effort to reset relations with European neighbors after Britain’s acrimonious 2020 departure from the European Union.

Unlike some politicians on the European right, Meloni is a staunch supporter of Ukraine. Starmer met her after returning from Washington, where he and U.S. President Joe Biden discussed Ukraine’s plea to use Western-supplied missiles to strike targets deep inside Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been pressing allies to allow his forces to use Western weapons to target air bases and launch sites inside Russia as Moscow steps up assaults on Ukraine’s electricity grid and utilities before winter. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that would mean NATO countries “are at war with Russia.”

So far, the U.S. hasn’t announced a change to its policy of allowing Kyiv to use American-provided weapons only in a limited area inside Russia’s border with Ukraine.

Meloni restated that Italian law precludes such use of Italian weaponry for offensive attacks against Russia. She said that Italy’s main contribution would continue to be in the area of defending Ukrainian civilians with anti-air defense systems.

Starmer said that he wouldn’t reveal details of “ongoing discussions,” but that Kyiv’s allies were united in face of Russia’s threats.

“We’ve all been clear. Russia started this war,” he said. “It’s a war of aggression. It’s unlawful. Russia could and should end it, and that’s where responsibility lies. And so I think it’s really important to be robust about this.”

A man's boat was sinking near England. How these Delaware 911 operators helped save him

The 911 caller was frantic.

His brother's boat was sinking in the English Channel and he was trying to reach emergency responders in Dover, England. The sun had set nearly 45 minutes earlier, so it was growing increasingly dark on the water on Aug. 27.

The caller wasn't with his brother − he was more than a thousand miles away, in Albania. Panic-struck, he'd searched "Dover Police Department" and clicked on the first website that popped up.

It wasn't police in Dover, England, who answered the call. It was Dover, Delaware, 911 operator MacKenzie Atkinson.

Atkinson's actions, along with those of fellow Delaware 911 operator Connor Logan, helped save the man's life that day. Just 15 minutes after the call, English Coast Guard officials were headed toward the sinking boat.

The man and others on the boat were rescued and brought to Dover, England, unharmed.

As a result of Atkinson and Logan's actions − as well as those of their co-workers Patricia Mazzola and Briana Dozier, who continued to ensure Dover, Delaware, residents received uninterrupted service − the 911 operations team has been nominated for a departmental award.

"The Dover Police Department has extraordinary civilian contributors to our public safety mission," said Dover, Delaware, Police Chief Thomas Johnson.  "Our communications operators are great examples of that and never get enough credit for being first responders."

How the rescue unfolded

Atkinson knew if she tried to direct the caller to the proper first responders, the call might get lost. Rescuers had precious time and she couldn't risk wasting it.

As she remained on the line, Atkinson began gathering key information. She had recently been certified by the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch and previous training had also taught her what to do with a vessel in distress.

What were the latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates of the boat, she asked. What else should European first responders should know?

While Atkinson continued her inquiries, Logan began getting ahold of international agencies.

First, he reached the Delaware River and Bay Authority's section of the U.S. Coast Guard. Then he spoke with the U.S's Fifth District − the country's Atlantic division that oversees all domestic Coast Guard operations east of the Rocky Mountains.

After that, Logan got ahold of the French Coast Guard. All this was done within four minutes.

Ultimately, the rescue effort included His Majesty's Coast Guard of England, police in Dover, England, and the United Kingdom's Maritime and Coastguard Agency's Coordination Center.

By 3:52 p.m. Eastern time (or 8:52 p.m. in England), the UK's Maritime and Coastguard Agency confirmed they were on their way to the boat. Soon after, the man and all others on board were rescued.

While Johnson praised the work his officers do on a daily basis, he made special note of the 911 operators − the very first of the first responders in his agency.

"Their ability to coordinate an international rescue effort while maintaining the safety of our local community is a testament to their exceptional skill and commitment," Johnson said.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he’s looking to Italy for lessons on tackling the flow of migrants in small boats to Britain’s southern shores.

Speaking after holding a bilateral meeting and working lunch with his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni in Rome, Starmer signaled he’ll watch how Italy’s planned new program to process asylum seekers in Albania pans out. He also told reporters in the Italian capital that he’s “very interested” in measures Meloni has taken upstream in the countries of origin of migrants, which had cut arrivals in Italy “quite significantly.”
