Azimut build quality in the long haul

I am attempting to narrow the field of choices in the 45-55 foot range, age 5-10 years. I have several makes/models on the short list, one of which is Azimut. I'm all set on size/shape/layout/resale for those candidates on my short list. I just need help with build quality after some use. Engines are engines in any boat, so we don't need to go there (although the Italians tend to have excess Hp for boat). Azimut builds in the higher range (in both length and price), and that limits the number of folks with familiarity with these boats. I have heard very little scuttlebutt about this brand (good or bad). The other boats on the list are much more popular overall and on the Great Lakes where I am located. For similar sizes and years, should I expect same, better or worse than with Sea Ray, Cruisers or Carver/Marquis? Does Azimut shine alongside Princess/Viking Sport Cruisers (excellent quality at an excellent price) or are they pretty-average pretty boats at a pretty premium penny? I know enough to hire a surveyor to check out a particular boat, but I'm not down to specific boat yet. So if you could, chat up a few dockmates about their experience with Azimut.

I personally knew a surveyor that worked directly for a very large Azimut dealer. They had to send him to Italy every 2 weeks for 2 weeks stints to inspect and have corrected all of the defects that were being built into the boats. The dealer would spend 2 months re-doing many things on the new boats before they could be sold, after the new program, they spent about one month the fix the boats. Me personally, I wouldn't buy an Azimut. Too many real stories I have heard about them that scares me off. Sunseeker/Princess would be higher on my list.

I get several calls a year for their rub rails. Even with a hull number, I have never got an answer from anyone at Azimut or their dealers regarding their OEM rub rail/extrusions (exception being one former dealership closed/sold and had a few select rail parts left over but they went fast once I found them). I have usually had to come up with an alternative replacement or modification.

My yard is used by the local dealer for their service yard. There is always 55’s & 62’s in the yard being worked on- most are for sale. My surveyor recently did a 55 and was surprise how poor it ran in the rough. I found this surprising as well, being a Euro boat I thought this would have been a non-issue and it would be a tank in the rough. Very Sexy boat, but I agree with Jonathan, if you’re looking for a Euro sedan in that size range look at the Viking/ princess, Sunseeker also check out Beneteau & Uniesse

Having looked at a lot of boats in this size range and above, of the brands you mention I would put the American-built Marquis clearly at the top of the list from a quality and ergonomics standpoint. I am a Hatteras man myself, which I strongly suggest you add to your list, but have liked what I saw on various Marquis, which we went through in detail at the Miami boat show. The Marquis is roughly to a Carver what Hatteras is to SeaRay. I did not like the engine room and systems layouts on the Princess (there was a nice one in Westport Harbor) or on the Viking/Princesses I have seen. You would be well served to stay with American-built Marquis or Hatteras for great after the sale service and parts availability. George Hatteras 56MY Boston Whaler 130 Sport

i've never owned or run a Mutt but what i've heard (from captains mostly) is not very positive. system installation, especially electrical, seem to be an issue as apparently Azimut contracts electrical work and the results are unpredictable from boat to boat. very stylish, but usability comes second with things like cleats in the wrong place, poorly designed rubrail than doens't always protect the entire hull and ski slope foredeck making it hard to stand (on the smaller ones). Looking at 5 to 10 year old boats, you're probably out of luck with Marquis since they only appeared a few years ago. Same with Hatteras... even though Hatteras "created" the small MY concept in the 70s/80s they basically abandoned the market in the 90s. Viking/Princess and Fairline are probably what you're going to find the most in that size/year range along with the "usual" suspect: Cruisers, Carver, Meridian and Sea Ray. And dont' overlook Bayliner, their 50+ line of PH MYs had very little in common with the smaller models and are actually pretty good boats with a fairly good reputation. finally, keep in mind that as you get into 8 to 10 year old boat, maintenance history and usage becomes as importnat if not more, than the builder name

Matthew How about sharing the type of boating you do or want to do and besides build quality (which is important) what other features you’re looking for. The thought of a “mutt” makes me think sporty sedan with a low to mid 20Knot cruise, 2-3 staterooms with 2 heads, upper & lower helm etc…

Agree with all the above. I lived in Italy for 3 years and got to see a few boats in fabrication as well as a ton of them at the Genoa Boat Show. Their style and visible things are pure sex. The construction, not so much. I agree you would be wise to add Hatt to your list and take a serious look at the Bayliner 4788. IMO, that boat is very well laid out and as Pascal said not at all like the smaller Bayliners WRT construction. I have never been on their 50+ footer but a freind is looking at trading up from his 4788.

Pascal is correct about different teams hired to do each boat. They sub out many areas of construction on those boats. My surveyor friend was amazed at the creative ways the Italians installed electric systems on these boats. Italian boats are famous for poor electrical systems, design, and installation. Most of the brands, not just Mutts. I talked to a knowledgeable HVAC guy I know, he had a job on an Mutt, had to remove one or two a/c compressor units that were blocking the unit that needed to be worked on. Who ever designed that should be keelhauled................

Prospective

I have almost no experience with Azimuts other than admiring them at boat shows. A few years ago my wife and I went on one. The broker was a young guy and mistakenly thought we were really in the market for a $600k boat. I poked around the boat a bit and was checking at the helm when I turned around to see the broker all excited as he showed my wife the custome Azimut China in its dedicated storage. I knew right then it was time to leave...

  • We have looked at the Silverton 43 with optional lower helm but it felt as crowded as an express.
  • Azimut has a dual helm below 50ft, but the layout isn't great. The Azimut 55 has an ideal layout--and could be had next year for near $400K--but all my worst fears are being confirmed. I'm striking it and the eventual 43S and 62S expresses from the list.
  • Cruisers 5000 is the shortest dual-helm with a good plan, and I'm quite fond of the larger Cruisers express boats. The 52 and 46 expresses are worthy compromises and the 47 coupe prototype looks like the best express ever in that size, but it will be $700 new.
  • Princess/Viking have a great reputation, but limited availability in the Lakes and only the newest, largest layouts are desireable.
  • Pilothouses (Navigator, Ocean Alexander, Carver/Marquis, big Bayliner) isolate the lower helm from the main salon a little too much for us, although some (Carver 53-57ft) are better layout than others (Nav, O/Alex).

IMO, a mid stateroom would not be a deal breaker. How much time do you really spend there? A lot of folks find them ugly as sin, but I like the 48 Sea Ray Motor Yacht. It's on my short list as soon as I hit the lottery.

Take a look at one of these. Great boat, has everything you want plus real Viking quality. They make a 60' also. http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/199...ht-1749214/Harrison-Township/MI/United-States

Mathew Ask me anything you want about the 5000 Sedan Sport , I'm obviously jaded about the boat & right now if you find a good one it should be at a steal. This is a merge of posts I made on this site: I run from the lower helm most of the time, visibility is great – a small blind spot looking over my right shoulder where the fridge is, but I will look out the pilothouse door when docking, matter of fact I often run the boat by myself and just step out the door to the dock with the bow and spring lines Not only does the lower helm have all the comforts of home, heat, A/C, defroster etc.. with its lower center of gravity the ride is much nicer then the bridge in the rough As far as rough water running, as I get older my idea of ‘rough’ is ever evolving and today we are more likely to hang out than run if very rough stuff Our last boat was a diesel powered Formula 41PC which laughed at most rough water so I expect a lot and I think the 5000sedan does a great job- GPH?: A lot depends on winds, wave height & frequency but most often if they are below 2-3 footer I run at 22-26 Knots depending on how much fuel I want to burn –about 42-48 GPH -this range depend on conditions – if it’s like glass I can run at 26+kts and burn about 42-44 GPH-if it’s snotty out, up to about 4 footers, it could be 22kts at the same GPH – at WOT –which is now about 31+ knots I burn 66GPH- if it gets above 4 footers I back down to 17+ kts and it runs nice. For the size/style boat that it is it runs great When cruisers decided to get into the sedan space they felt they had to compete with a lot of the euro boats – they used some of the best components money could buy – I’m 6’1” 222lbs and can get completely around the big CATS and all the equipment is easy to get to. The boat has V-drives but they’re NOT mounted at the A$$ of the boat; they are under the Salon, at least 6-8 feet in front of the transom. This brings their weigh closer to the center of the boat. The Dripless boxes are in the open and easy to get to The 5000 has a stairway inside as well as outside to the fly bridge- the bridge seats about 10 people and has a sun pad for 4, has a wet bar/ice maker/fridge, it has 3 staterooms & 2 full heads with separate showers. The Master Queen berth is in the center of the boat and does not touch the hull, read this as no noise (hull slapping), if you want the noise the stateroom in the bow is bigger than most express master staterooms. Couch in the salon opens to a queen. The 3rd stateroom has a washer & dryer and they work! BTW it carries 150 gals of water & 100 Gals of waste

A Michigan-built Tiara 5200 Salon might be worth looking at. Great build quality and local to your waters.

I was thinking the same thing - Tiara would definitely be on my list.

The guy in the slip next to me had a 55 Mutt and just moved up to a 62 Mutt. And can only assume that he is happy with the build quality, I have not spoken to him.

AZIMUT GRANDE 35 METRI – THE NEW AZIMUT YACHTS FLAGSHIP

azimut yachts build quality

A wide-body superyacht with Raised Pilot House (RPH) and the possibility of adding a third level for an additional sundeck

– Superior construction technology, with a pure carbon fiber superstructure, a D2P hull with wave piercer, and reduced noise and vibration

– Side garage for tender and jet ski

– Two big beach clubs in the stern and bow

– An owner’s suite with the largest extending terrace on the market

– Uniquely styled interiors designed by Achille Salvagni

– Exterior design by Stefano Righini

The Azimut Grande 35 Metri is the new flagship in Azimut Yachts’ most exclusive line, the Grande Collection. Drawing on Azimut carbon fiber technology and the expertise of Stefano Righini, who defined the concept and designed the exteriors, the yacht offers unprecedented solutions for a boat this size, representing a masterpiece of style and space.

The yacht has a Wide Body with Raised Pilot House (RPH) and supremely sleek exteriors, featuring exceptionally sized full-height windows in both the bow and salon. Unique in this category is the option to add an additional sundeck (almost 30 m2) on a third level, with access from the upper deck in the stern. This solution doesn’t affect the balance of volumes and retains the model’s overall dynamism.

The Azimut Grande 35 Metri delivers the best build quality in its category. The entire superstructure and hardtop are made from pure carbon fiber, which Azimut uses with great success to increase the volume of the structures, and so to offer more space and comfort, but without adding weight to the boat. Epoxy, the non plus ultra of resins, is used alongside the carbon because it has superior mechanical characteristics to the resins normally used.

azimut yachts build quality

With a maximum beam of 7.5 meters, the wide-body Grande 35 Metri has all the features of even bigger superyachts, like the side garage for a 5 meter tender plus a 3.25 meter jet-ski. This leaves the stern completely free for a magnificent 12 m2 beach area provided by the big pivoting swim platform.

A second surprising lounge or beach club area in the bow (30 m2, excluding the side walkways) is fitted with sofas, a sun lounging area and a hydromassage tub. The spacious deck area in front the tub is in fact a platform that can be raised using an electrohydraulic mechanism to gain access to the winches and fender racks beneath. The trapezoidal bow (one of Righini’s hallmarks) provides plenty of space and even more comfort throughout the area during both mooring operations and navigation.

The interiors of the Azimut Grande 35 Metri are designed by world renowned architect Achille Salvagni (one of AD Collector’s top 100 international designers), who uses flowing lines and streamlined shapes to reinterpret various classical features from a distinctive and unmistakably contemporary point of view.

The various adaptations of the design share the same guiding thread, with one matt, textured type of wood juxtaposed against a darker, polished variety. A series of inserts in exclusive materials like treated brass, bronze and polished stainless steel characterise and contaminate the space, giving it authority and a sense of memory.

The forms created by Salvagni shape and permeate the interiors with a system that is never banal or dictated by fleeting fashions. The interiors are serene, calm and sophisticated in their simplicity, expressing the new approach to well-being under the banner of calm and sophistication.

They provide a neutral backdrop onto which the designer has grafted unique, specially-designed furnishings that enhance and embellish, with meticulous attention to detail. The big circular sofa in the salon on the main deck defines the dynamism and originality of this living area, underscored by the radial arrangement made up of independent components that characterise and define the space, without interfering with the system of walls and windows.

azimut yachts build quality

The main deck contains the owner’s suite, which transmits the same sensation of openness and lightness, where the king size central bed becomes the main feature around which the entire space revolves. The highpoint of the owner’s suite is its unique private balcony, which is unprecedented on a 35 meter yacht. Using a mechanism that is highly sophisticated but extremely straightforward, the section of the full-height window with a carbon fiber frame folds out, while the floor of the balcony extends from under the cabin, protected by automatic pop up stanchions. The result is the Instant Balcony, with no uprights or other obstacles to spoil the panoramic view from the owner’s suite.

Below deck, the layout includes four guest cabins (two VIP cabins with double beds and two with twin beds), with access from a big central lobby. One of the standout features of the Azimut Grande 35 Metri’s interiors is the spiral staircase, which connects all the decks, from the lowerdeck to the pilot house. The backlit onyx steps have different finishings on their external and internal sides (white lacquer and mother of pearl respectively), as if to confirm just how exclusive the design is.

In the bow, in a space that is completely separate from the guest area, the quarters for the six members of crew consist of a crew mess, four cabins and four bathrooms.

No effort has been spared to make the Grande 35 Metri a paradigm of comfort. Special care has been taken over noise reduction, with the use of elastic mountings for the propulsion system transmission and the introduction of modal analysis into the design process. This technique, borrowed from the aerospace industry, is used to study and predict the potential stresses and vibrations to which the surfaces will be subjected, allowing the structures to be planned in such a way as to reduce them to a minimum for excellent acoustic comfort.

The D2P_Displacement to Planing® hull, designed by Pierluigi Ausonio in conjunction with the Azimut Benetti Research & Development center, combines the comfort typical of a displacement hull with the performance of a planing hull and a wave piercer to improve fuel efficiency. The D2P hull with wave

piercer means the yacht can reach high top speeds without needing particularly powerful engines, or navigate in displacement mode with a remarkable range at a cost effective speed. The hull has been optimised for the full range of most frequently used speeds, including both long range displacement mode speeds of 10-12 knots and cruising speeds in semi-displacement mode.

The Grande 35 Metri, with two MTU 16V2000 M93 engines rated 2,400 hp each, has an estimated cruising speed of 21 knots and a top speed of 25.5 knots.

The Azimut Grande 35 Metri is the top of the range in the Grande Collection, representing a step forward in the search for new solutions that benefit owners in terms of their technology, design, comfort and navigation efficiency.

Azimut’s New 72-Foot Yacht Has One of the Largest Flybridges in Its Class. We Hopped Onboard.

Azimut S72 Motoryacht

Mancini’s counterpart on the 72 is the Turin-based interior designer Fabio Fantolino, who has inherited the Fly interiors away from noted architect Achille Salvagni. What Fantolino created in the yacht’s salon feels very much like an apartment in Rome, both elegant and functional. Details like leather satchel straps on the sofa set the boat apart, but in a functional way. The cushions slide to make the seating larger or more intimate. A portside galley amidships probably doesn’t have the food stowage you’d want for longer trips, but its central location makes it the hub of a chic onboard cocktail party.

One of my favorite features of this yacht’s design was a detail on the outer edge of the galley bar where lacquered, aquamarine slats call to mind the louvers common on La Dolce Vita –era runabouts. They share the same veneer as the alfresco dining table supports in the cockpit. That material, in fact, shows up across the boat, helping Fantolino create a vibe that is equal parts fun and sumptuous.

Azimut Yachts S2 Motoryacht

The U-shaped dining settee with a teak table to port is positioned opposite an amply sized wetbar, while other lounge seating options are both forward and aft. The hardtop overhead has glass sections to let in sunlight as well as electrically actuated shades for when the rays becomes too strong.

Azimut 72 Fly flybridge

A plush flybridge might be something you’ve come to expect from Azimut, but a pleasant surprise on these boats is the improved work space. Historically, Azimut has not been known for functional details, but the 72 has a third steering station with joystick controls in the cockpit for easier docking, as well as a work area at the bow for crew members working the anchor. That foredeck, by the way, has a large social area with lounges and sunbeds.

Under the cockpit, the twin 1,400 hp MAN V12s were housed in an engine room that offered good access to all work points. Reported speed numbers are 31 knots at the top end, with a 26-knot cruise. Range at 26 knots is 310 nautical miles, enough to make it from New York City to Nantucket, or Miami to Nassau without refueling.

Hello All, I am looking at buying a Azimut. I have read a lot of varying reviews regarding the build quality from this manufacturer. However, most of the reviews appear to be directed towards their larger boats. This model was introduced January 1, 2015 and is really an entry level boat for Azimut. Personally, I love the look, feel and functionality of it. The one piece glass window in front is fantastic. However, I have no intention of buying on emotion.....I am very interested in other experienced owners opinions. Does anyone have any experience with the Atlantis models? Interested in the overall build quality. Interested in parts and warranty experience people have had with MarineMax in 2015/2016. etc. If you were to look at something else in this category, what would it be? All opinions and comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I haven't been involved with any of the newer Azimut builds. But have been involved with plenty of the older ones. I'd recommend Sunseeker or Riva or Searay in that size.

I have a 2015 Azimut 45 Flybridge and it has been terrible. I have experienced nothing but mechanical failures and then having the boat hauled up for months at a time trying to get the right parts. Steer clear of Azimut. You will spend more time wishing you could have the boat being in the water than it actually being in the water.

When you are no longer shackled to the dealer for warranty repairs I am sure you can with the right people looking after it sort most of that stuff out efficiently. It is in the dealers interest to drag out warranty repairs as long as possible so they reduce the risk of a second or third one for the same thing .

olderboater said: ↑ Now any of the equipment giving problems you could take to a reputable boatyard now. Their warranty is from their manufacturer. The problem is that most will blame it on something Azimut has done. I share K1W1's view that you're likely to leave the warranty period with significant problems still, all of which can probably be fixed, just depending on how much you're then willing to spend vs. just tolerating the problems. Does the following even sound like the potential for problem free: "An Italian boat builder building in Brazil for the US Market." Click to expand...

If a defect or problem was noted and documented during the warranty period, but not fixed or repaired within the period, I would think the factory (or dealer) is still responsible after the initial warranty expired? I sure hope so, I got a brand new boat 5 months ago and still have a few warranty issues going on, most of them documented on a pre-delivery survey. WorldCat however seem to stand behind their product, so far. Just to make sure I have their attention, I started a Facebook Owners Group for my model boat with pictures and details of every little problem and fellow owners are signing up almost daily. Probably a good idea for the unhappy Azimut owners as well, although this site will come up on any search engine seeking information on Azimut or other brands. Which should keep the manufactors on their toes if they have half a brain.
Nothing new for Azimut, Norseman. And, their handling of warranty in the US is very unique. But the concept of Marine Max not solving the issues and Azimut referring everything back to them is nothing new. WorldCat doesn't to my knowledge have those issues, although after 5 months I'd get very insistent. Anything documented over five months ago should be fixed by now.

The part that is currently a 5 week lead time is a cylinder head, which I understand is Cummins, but during this same repair period that is now at 6 weeks, MarineMax told me that the AC Pump they needed would also take 5 weeks. I found it for them and had it there next day. Not until after that happened did I find out that they also now need the cylinder head. The air conditioning on the boat does not work. There are numerous electrical issues in the cabin. The engines overheat. Last season the boat was out of the water for 3 months waiting for new props. Again, MarineMax gave a ridiculous lead time for those and I found the quickest solution. I should not have to do their job for them.
It sounds like your issue is more with Marinemax than Azimut. Cylinder head should be warrantied out by Cummins and not Azimut. Cummins is usually pretty good and fast about warrantying out items from what I understand. Have you contacted Azimut of North America (located in Fort Lauderdale, FL.) and spoken to them about your situation? While I have in the past had them take care of stuff quickly under warranty they also tried to deny some cosmetic stuff at the same time till I ut my foot down. Have you tried a different MarineMax dealership as well? Why did you need props, was the boat run aground?

The problem isn't with the boat as it is with the us service network. Most servicing companies are not familiar with Italian equipment and or even Italian builds for that matter. I find that 99 percent out of 100 of issues don't stem from azimut as much as it stemmed from the person servicing the azimut. I have to disagree with Capt j, A lot of the defects azimuts are plagued with come from lack of correct knowledgeable service. This mostly comes before the boat was sold and was sitting in the dealers inventory in the United States. A perfect example of this is hydraulic swim platforms that most of the flys come equipped with. For example a common issue with these is corrosion on the hydraulic rams around the fittings causing the fittings to leak oil. This happens because of the dealer not knowing that the platform have separate zincs that must be changed on the platform itself as the platform isn't bonded with the rest of the boat. Just my thoughts

Just my thoughts Click to expand...
Capt J said: ↑ No, the problem is design. The Rams should be so that the shaft of them and seal is not underneath the water line when they are sitting in the water. They should also have a locking system like Sunseeker, Neptunus and many others do that takes the weight off of the rams, so if you have a leak the lift doesn't fall. Barnacles grow on the shaft and cut the seal. I've never seen anyone not keep up with the zincs on them, but I could see that happen with unknowledgable owners. The other issue stems with HOW they're built. Azimut sub-contracts all of the joinery work, plumbing, and electrical. 6-10 different companies finish them off, none of them follow the plans, wiring diagrams or even parts list. I managed 2 different 2001 68' plus that were 2 hull numbers apart. None of the wiring was routed the same, none of the same electrica parts, even all of the exterior lights were different. So everything you go to fix is a can of worms that you have to figure out how to open. Add that to MarineMax's very poor after the sale support, and lack of anyone inventorying most of the parts here in the U.S. and you get a mess. The differences in fixing Italian or American isn't all that different. Parts are part, a pump is a pump, etc. Surfside in NY used to stock A LOT of parts for them. A parts guy named Rob worked there for years really knew them and their parts. I'd order parts from them all of the time and ship them to FL, just to avoid dealing with Marinemax, Then Marinemax bought them out, their inventory all disappeared, and so did Rob. The way I've seen Azimut do stuff sometimes is completely mind boggling. I once ran one, where the black water tank, Y valve, macerator pump, and seacock were all in a 10' area of the boat, but these idiots ran the hose clear across an entire stateroom fore/aft and looped it up behind the aft wall and back to the pump, so macerator pumps burned out often. It had a check valve on the seacock so there was no need to plumb the macerator system with 50' of hose, when it could've been done with 10'. I see this type of stuff over and over. I've managed/maintained 6 different Azimuts over the years, put over 10,000 NMs on one. And have run at least 10 others. Click to expand...
In reference to this particular Azimut owner, mvernon, and their complaints about service, it would appear that some of the issues are self inflicted. Waiting a long time for props, may suggest that the boat was run aground. Why would one need new props? If the boat was run aground, it would not be unexpected that an engine would overheat from poor maintenance or damage from running aground, necessitating replacing a head on an otherwise proven engine. Connecting such a technologically advanced vessel to the poor shore power we have here in the Boston area and not monitoring your voltage without an isobooster to protect you will cause an electrical component to fail. I would say that an Azimut is not a beginner boat and a lot of things can go wrong without having the basic knowledge of an experienced captain. Without that knowledge, unless you are paying someone to monitor and maintain your boat weekly or even run it on every trip, you should expect problems. It is not a Camry. I would be reluctant to blame this kind of stuff on service or sales.
Dj239 said: ↑ While I won't disagree with you on some of those points, I would like to point out that all opacmare systems have locking arms incorporated into the platform that locks the arms in place after the platform has been full retracted. The leak never develops at the ram piston themselves as much as the fittings on the rams. Yes there use of sub contractors for wiring and other systems can cause annoyances, however most competent techs can figure it out. This is usually found on the smaller models 70 and under. All the bigger models have schematics and pipe runs that are accurate to the vessels hull. I have a lot of experience with the azimut range and worked on, delivered and qc almost all their current models. The problems usually are always bad service and bad part availablity in us. It is also of note that at the time of sale azimut offers various packages that supply all the relevant spare parts and electrical components. However most customers are never aware of this option because the dealer doesn't want to hold this sort of package in inventory just because of monitary reasons and the shear number of models. Also most brokers are not aware of this because they don't take the time to familiarize themselves with the product they sell. Click to expand...

Azimut Magellano 60 Reviewed

  • By Phil Draper
  • December 7, 2023

Azimut Magellano 60

I find myself in need of the Hogwarts Sorting Hat to properly categorize Azimut’s Magellano 60. Judging by much of the specification sheet and the accommodations plan, it seems like a mainstream flybridge motoryacht. But it’s not. Strictly speaking, the Magellano 60 is a semidisplacement model, but then again, these designs aren’t normally quite so sprightly. Azimut uses the term “crossover” for its Magellanos. It fits.

Longtime designer Ken Freivokh’s work with Azimut on its newer and bigger Magellanos is masterly. His designs have a timeless quality and an elegance that’s so often missing from models with big diesels and top speeds closer to 30 knots than 20.

Azimut Magellano 60

The 60 marks a new entry-level size for the Magellano range, with the older 43 and 53 Magellanos gone, and the 8-year-old Magellano 66 remaining as the last of the older series to be drawn by Cor D. Rover. The more recent Magellano 25M (an 82-foot raised pilothouse) and Magellano 30M (a 97-foot trideck) are by Freivokh. They share the same design DNA, with bluff bows and signature wooden battens on the after corners of their superstructures.

Outdoor spaces aboard the Magellano 60 include a foredeck terrace with booth seating and sun pads, a big flybridge beneath an optional hardtop, and a generously sized cockpit with a glazed transom panel and a full top-deck overhang for proper shade. Azimut calls the aft deck an “infinity terrace” with bi-fold doors that open to extend the salon. Furniture in the cockpit includes a table and two facing sofas, which means guests look out at the sea rather than back into the boat. There’s also a two-stool bar to port that shares its countertop with an aft galley when the drop-down window is open.

Azimut Magellano 60

Inside, the decor is by Azimut’s in-house team, with clear influences from bigger sisterships that have 1950s-inspired schemes by Milanese-based architect Vincenzo De Cotiis. Beyond the galley and up one step are a lounge area amidships, a C-booth sofa to port and a pair of two-seat sofas on either side of a coffee/dining table to starboard. The overall palette is light-stained oak veneers and off-whites—all remarkably soothing. The salon views are superb too, particularly to starboard, where the biggest picture window measures a whopping 8 by 5 feet.

Beneath the raked aft windshield, the lower helm has two Aras bucket seats with the wheel inboard, prioritizing access for the skipper. Immediately to port is a dogleg staircase that leads to the deck below.

This is essentially a three-stateroom, three-head yacht with two showers. There are no other layout options. The owner’s space is amidships with en suite facilities to port. The VIP is forward and shares its portside en suite with the twin-berth stateroom across the companionway. A separate day head is there as well.

Azimut Magellano 60

Power is also one choice only: a pair of 730 hp i6 MAN diesels. With them spinning at their maximum 2,350 rpm, and with the Seakeeper gyrostabilizer engaged, the Magellano 60 had consistent speeds of around 26 knots at half-load. There’s no obvious hop-up onto plane, but I felt a distinct step change passing through 1,600 rpm. Azimut calls the semiplaning hull geometry “dual mode,” which means it is efficient at displacement as well as faster cruise speeds up to 20 knots. According to my data, the yacht will run all day at that speed, which equates to 2,000 rpm. Allowing for a 10 percent reserve, there’s a working range of around 330 nautical miles. Ultimate range could be near 600 nm at 10 knots.

The Magellano 60 is surprisingly nimble too. The hull happily self-levels once the speeds push up into double digits with a 3-degree, bow-up attitude. The wheel remains light but precise, and it will turn this vessel surprisingly quickly. Although I had a calm day and minimal swell during my time on board, I found that the yacht felt most comfortable with the manual trim tabs fully up. They should come into their own in lumpier beam or quartering seas, when the gyro is probably best kept off.

Azimut Magellano 60

Those engines, incidentally, are hooked up to V-boxes, and the shafts run out via half-tunnels, which help reduce the draft to a Bahamas-friendly 4 feet, 6 inches at full load. The space for the engines beneath the yacht’s cockpit sole is compact, but the machinery area does not encroach beneath the salon, which makes for a particularly quiet boat. I recorded just 67 decibels at the lower helm at 20 knots, 72 decibels in the owner’s stateroom and 62 decibels in the VIP.

There is an option to specify the lazarette as a single-berth crew cabin. Either way, this space has its own entrance from the port side of the hydraulic swim platform.

Like other newer Magellanos, the 60 that I got aboard had a striking custom paint job, this one a blue-green metallic hull. Italians call it ottanio. Americans call it teal after the duck. A light-gold boot top set it off. The standard specification includes white gelcoat.

The Azimut Magellano 60 premiered at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. Once production hits stride, the builder expects to deliver one every two weeks.

Sustainable Diesel

The Azimut Magellano 60 I got aboard ran on hydrogenated vegetable oil instead of diesel. The claims for this sustainable fuel include emissions reductions from 60 to 90 percent, depending on the raw materials used during the refining process. Thanks to a deal with Italian producer Eni Sustainable Mobility, all Azimut owners can request delivery of new boats with HVOlution biofuel in the tanks.

Formidable Flagship

The Azimut Magellano 60 is the start of the builder’s four-model Magellano range. On the other end of the range is the 97-foot, 6-inch Magellano 30 Metri. The 30 Metri is notable for its ability to hold more than 3,800 gallons of fuel while consuming about 15 percent less than traditional hard-chine planing hulls. Twin 1,500 hp MAN diesels give the 30 Metri a reported 16-knot cruise speed and a 20-knot top hop.

New Boats at Cannes Boat Show: Azimut Seadeck 7

  • Cannes Yachting Festival
  • Top stories

The impressive Azimut Seadeck 7 will be featured alongside the Seadeck 6 at Cannes. Both boats feature a full diesel electric hybrid drive

Azimut is coming out all guns blazing at Cannes Boat Show with not one but three new show debuts. The freshest of these is the Seadeck 7, which was still having the finishing touches applied to it as we write this.

Like its smaller sibling, the Seadeck 6 , which was launched earlier this summer, the Seadeck 7 has a strong focus on sustainability and will be the first Azimut to feature a full diesel electric hybrid drive. Technical details of this have not yet been released but it’s likely to use Volvo Penta IPS drives and D13 engines linked to a smaller electric motor and battery pack for silent manoeuvring and low-speed cruising over short distances.

It’s not just the drive system that contributes towards a claimed 40% reduction in emissions. Extensive use of carbon fibre and a vacuum-infused hull keeps weight down for improved fuel efficiency, while reconstituted cork decking and carpets made from recycled plastics reduce the consumption of virgin raw materials.

Sliding side doors provide a closer connection with the sea

The design follows the template set by the Seadeck 6 with softer lines that reflect its focus on relaxation and a closer connection with the sea. At the heart of this is Azimut’s ‘Fun Island’ featuring a drop-down staircase into the sea and folding platforms on either side of a central sunbed and dining area. The starboard one even has fittings for a hammock stand built into it.

Azimut’s Grande series to feature Rolls-Royce engines

Rolls-royce and azimut benetti have signed an agreement for mtu engines to be integrated with the italian yard’s 30-metre yacht series….

azimut yachts build quality

Rolls-Royce and Azimut Benetti Group have announced a new four-year agreement that will see Rolls-Royce’s mtu engines integrated into Azimut and Benetti yachts. The partnership includes the introduction of advanced propulsion systems for the Azimut Grande yacht series, which now includes models up to 30 metres.

“This collaboration to develop new technical solutions marks an important step in our continuous innovation strategy,” says Alessandro Rossi, Product Manager of Azimut Benetti Group. “The compact propulsion plant in the ‘Grande 30M’ allows for a unique layout with unexpected spaces across three decks, while meeting our key requirements for low-emission, high-efficiency yachts.”

Grande yachts will be equipped with propulsion systems featuring mtu Series 2000 engines, ZF pod drives and mtu NautIQ ship automation. According to Rolls-Royce mtu, the combination is 15% more efficient than conventional propulsion systems.

The integrated pod drive system provides operational advantages too, including lower carbon emissions and outputs from 1,015 to 1,472 kilowatts. The possibility of hybrid upgrades, allowing electric operation in ports or for dynamic positioning, adds further appeal.

The collaboration between the two companies also includes the provision of extensive services, and discussions are underway for the integration of bridge solutions for the Grande series.

“This is a significant milestone for our ‘From Bridge to Propeller’ strategy, which we introduced at the Yachting Festival in Cannes in 2023,” says Denise Kurtulus, Senior Vice President Global Marine at Rolls-Royce's Power Systems division. “Our integrated solutions are generating considerable interest in the yacht industry, and with this partnership, we are expanding our presence in the premium yacht sector.”

The first mtu propulsion package will be delivered this year, with the first Azimut yachts featuring the new drive train expected to be launched by 2025.

It is also important to keep in mind that the total cost of ownership of a used yacht can be significantly higher than the purchase price, due to the costs of maintenance, repairs and upgrades that have been made to keep the yacht in top condition. 1. Best Azimut yachts: 7 of the finest models from the famed Italian yard

The smallest Atlantis in the range and one of the smallest Azimuts ever built, the Atlantis 34 charmed our reviewer Nick Burnham with its "pared-back, minimalist vibe".
