At Borrow A Boat we're on a mission to make boating more accessible and to make it easier for you to get on the water. We believe boating should be available to everyone, and we can help the boating industry, boat owners, marinas, and everyone who wants to go boating by providing a 21st-century boating marketplace. Borrow A Boat is the best place to find and rent boats of all sorts, from a canal and riverboats across Europe to a sailing boat , motor yacht , catamaran across North America, the Mediterranean and Caribbean and further afield, along with some of the world's most impressive superyachts and luxury yacht charters.

A smaller alternative than a superyacht charter, catamarans are the fastest growing type of charter yacht at the moment and once you've sailed on one it's easy to see why. In terms of your ideal catamaran charter think of locations like Thailand, the Ionian Islands, BVI (British Virgin Islands), Croatian Adriatic, Ibiza, French riviera and Mallorca for your sailing adventure.

Types of Catamarans Available For Rent Or Charter In Spain:

When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the catamaran yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Types of Catamarans Available:

Catamarans: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull sailing yacht. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the cabin as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran: These motor boat are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter , consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.

Catamaran Sailing Areas In Spain

On a catamaran yacht charter Spain, you've a wide range of options for a sailing holiday through Borrow A Boat. Fancy a bit of winter sun cruising the North East Trade Winds in the Canary Islands or a relaxed cruise along the Costa del Sol? There are a wide variety of options available in your choice of sailing holiday.

A classic catamaran boat rental holiday would be out of Ibiza Town or Balearic Island capital Palma de Mallorca. Enjoy the sailing and fun ashore on your luxury Balearic Island sailing holiday! Another important tourist hotspot is out of Lanzarote on the Canary Islands, tropical Atlantic Ocean islands with perfect winds and weather.

On the Spanish mainland you can do is cruise the coastline of the Costa Brava or Costa del Sol yacht charter on the Mediterranean Sea. Explore buzzing Barcelona and quaint Palamos on the Costa Brava or summer holiday capital Marbella and Torremelinos on the Costa del Sol. A Spain yacht charter is among the best you will find on the Western Mediterranean.

Crewed Catamaran Charter or Bareboat:

When it comes to a Spain catamaran charter you typically have two choices - bareboat or crewed catamaran charter.

When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all catamaran searches to be with or without skipper depending on what charter yachts you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your catamaran hire.

Skippered Charter: A skippered yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications beforehand. For a crewed catamaran you will pay a fixed fee for the crew and skipper as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht charte r with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of yacht rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases, skippers will also be the boat owner (typically day charter) which means they will know all the best - secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a skipper as well and prices will vary depending on the type of charter boat.

Bareboat Catamaran Charter : For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the charter yacht while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can skipper these boats yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Catamaran In Spain

If you are on a crewed Spain catamaran charter you do not need a license to sail - you can just turn up at the marina and go.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat catamaran charter and in some countries a day skipper or ICC may not be enough for boats over 45 feet in length, you will need to check with the charter agent but here are some examples of typical sailing qualifications that will allow you to charter in most countries:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will typically be able to take a bareboat charter out of Thailand (but it is worth checking as per above), these include Day Skipper , Coastal Skipper ( *sail or motor endorsement) or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted but also check as per above

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should i consider when hiring a catamaran.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Catamaran in Spain?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the catamaran hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Catamaran breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company and they can typically send someone from the charter base

What should I think of before I hire a Catamaran in Spain?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the catamaran before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool in the evenings.

What Qualifications Do I need to hire a Catamaran?

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. If you choose to have a skipper on board your catamaran you won't require licences.

Main sights in Spain

If you love nature, you can visit beautiful national parks such as the Teide, the Picos de Europa or the Timanfaya. Of all European countries, the most IBAs (Important Bird Areas) can be found in Spain. We also recommend that you visit the Marimutra botanical garden where you can admire 6, 000 different flowers and plants. This wonderful place can be found in the southern part of Costa Brava in Blanes. Barcelona is the second-largest city in Spain and an important port of the Adriatic Sea. The main sight here is the La Sagrada Familia – the Expiatory Church of the Holy Family, which is a World Heritage Site. Further famous sights include the Santa Maria del Mar cathedral and the Picasso Museum. The town centre has a green area called Parc de la Ciutadella; its fountain was inspired by the Trevi Fountain in Rome.

Gastronomy of Spain

The paella is among the greatest delicacies; it is made with good quality rice coloured yellow by saffron. They put many types of meat and vegetables in it. Popular soups include cool gazpacho and warm cocido. Tapas is also popular, and we differentiate several types. They prepare it with olive, sausage, vegetables or cheese. The famous Jamon Serano ham is a delicacy that you must definitely taste. Churros is a popular dessert, and so is the Madeleine called Magdalena. As for drinks, they have sherry, Malaga wine and Sangria.

If you sail around Spain, you can explore the other wonderful areas, leaving from Malaga. Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Mijas Costa and Marbella are also great destinations with several exciting things to do. More Spain sailing routes

Spain sailing holidays: Explore the wonderful shore segments!

Its pleasant climate and natural beauty make Spain an attractive destination among tourists. Our article [...]

The large country has a very diverse climate. There are large fluctuations inland, and there is a great number of sunny hours in the eastern and southern parts with a low level of precipitation. Summers are hot everywhere, with the exception of the Atlantic shores. The average temperature is 25 °C, and the maximum temperature can get as high as 35 °C. Out of all the waters at the shores of the country, the Atlantic Ocean’s is the coldest. The average temperature is around 20 °C.

The Spanish islands have different climates. The Canary Islands have a pleasant subtropical climate, while there is a greater fluctuation on the Balearic Islands. It often rains in the summer, and the amount of precipitation is higher during the winter. Between the autumn and spring periods, stronger winds arrive, for instance, the Mistral, the Vendaval or the Sirocco. We recommend water enthusiasts visit Spain in the summer, and the autumn period is perfect for visiting the historic and natural sights.

The geographical location, as well as the orographic conditions of Spain, made its climate particularly diverse. Spain is the most climatically diverse country in Europe. Spain is characterized by the overlap of one fundamental climatic division (between humid and semiarid and arid zones) by another (the threefold division of the peninsula into maritime, continental, and mountain climates).

Some regions can be very cold during the winter and extremely hot in the summer. The vast central plateau, or Meseta, has a more continental influenced climate. On the Mediterranean coast, the climate is moderate with rain in spring and autumn. The Balearic Islands have a maritime climate, with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers.

On the central and southern coast of the Mediterranean, the sun shines quite often even in winter. On the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and in the small Atlantic coastline of the Gulf of Cádiz winter is mild. Temperatures range between 20°C and 30°C. Wet periods are between September and October. The months of January until February provide the coldest time of the year. In comparison with the northern coast, the rains are rarer and sunshine is more frequent. This is due to the fact that the Mediterranean coasts of Spain, exposed as they are to the east and south, are relatively sheltered from Atlantic weather fronts. Along the Mediterranean coast and in the Balearic Islands, summer is hot and sunny, as is typical of the Mediterranean climate , the air is humid but sea breezes temper the heat during the day.

Summer is cool and quite rainy on the Atlantic coast, where even in July and August the sky is often covered with clouds, and the sea is not warm, barely touching 21 °C in August.

The Coastal Mediterranean region is marked by Leveche winds: hot, dry, easterly or southeasterly air currents that originate over North Africa. The climate and landscape are determined by the Atlantic Ocean winds whose moisture gets trapped by the mountains circumventing the Spanish Atlantic coast.

Spain has a long and famous history of sailing (Christopher Columbus sailed for Spain, the world-beating Spanish Armada, etc…) and their islands are perfectly equipped for sea-farers to enjoy today. You'll find excellent marina facilities, cute and historic port towns, and authentic local culture - including local fisherman, flamenco dancers, freshly-cooked paella, and sangria on tap. A blissful week awaits, and we can help you find and book your ideal yacht or catamaran.

Our Yacht Charter base in Spain - Palma, Portocolom in Mallorca, Ibiza, Barcelona, Tenerife, and Arrecife in Lanzarote

SAILING RATING:  Beginner / Intermediate - The Balearic islands (we have bases in Palma, Portocolom and Ibiza) and Barcelona on the mainland are in the sheltered cruising ground of the Mediterranean sea, and suitable for sailors of all abilities.

The Canary islands (our bases in Arrecife and Tenerife) are based in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, offer more challenging sailing, with stronger winds, and are better suited for people who have solid experience of how to handle a boat.

WHEN TO GO:  The sailing season technically runs from March to November , with peak season being in July and August, but there's sunshine for much of the year, and there's great sailing to be had outside of the season.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  You'll need an ICC (which you can convert from an RYA DaySkipper or equivalent ) or above to charter a boat in Spain. If you're not qualified, we can find you a professional skipper .

VISA REQUIREMENTS:  Spain is part of the EU , which means UK and EU passport holders can travel there at will. US and Australian passport holders do not need a visa unless planning to stay in Europe for longer than 90 days.

GETTING THERE:  There are a number of airports right across Spain and the islands, which are all well connected to the rest of Europe as it is a popular tourist destination. There's also good rail, road, bus and ferry links to get you to our bases. We can help arrange transfers to or from the marina, as well as helping you get provisions on board if your flight arrives late at night.

In the Balearic islands , for Palma and Portocolom it's best to land in Palma International airport, from which you can get to Palma in 15 minutes or Portocolom in 35. Similarly, our base in Ibiza is only a 30 minute transfer from Ibiza airport, which connects all over Europe. There's a choice of three airports near to our base in Barcelona , the closest is the main El Prat international airport (a 25 minute drive away), but it's also possible to land at Girona airport (1h15 away) or Reus airport (1h35 away). In the Canary islands , you'll land practically in the marina if you fly to the main Tenerife airport, and it's just 11 minutes drive away once you've grabbed your bags. And our base in Arrecife is just 14 minutes drive from Lanzarote airport.

Where to sail in Spain

We charter yachts and catamarans from six bases in Spain - Palma and Portocolom in Mallorca and Ibiza in the Mediterranean Balearic islands, Barcelona on the mainland, and Tenerife and Arrecife in the Canary islands. See below for ideas of where to sail when you get there (But be sure to check out our detailed destination guides to find out more).

PALMA, MALLORCA   Ideas of where to sail: There's relaxing times to be had in touring the many calas (bays) of Mallorca, and there are over 365 beaches! You can see them all by circumnavigating the 160 nM of Mallorca, or head up the (better) East coast to Menorca and back, visit the wilderness of Cabrera, or, if you're after more of a voyage, it's a 56 nM hop to Ibiza.

PORTOCOLOM, MALLORCA   Ideas of where to sail: You're well-placed for exploring the superb East coast of Mallorca, with all it's incredible cliffs, bays and calas. Island-hop to nearby Menorca (less touristy, and even prettier than Mallorca), before returning via the wild islands of Cabrera to the South to get a taste of everything the area can offer.

IBIZA   Ideas of where to sail: Ibiza is big enough for outstanding tranquillity, excellent beaches, beautiful calas and historic old towns - as well as late-night parties. A circular trip around the island is 60 nM, so you could expand it by hopping to nearby Formentera, which is largely off the beaten track and boasts pristine white sandy beaches over 6 miles long!

BARCELONA   Ideas of where to sail: There's a choice of sailing South along the coast to Tarragona, once the capital of the Roman Empire, and the old town of Sitges, or North to the fortresses of Roses. En-route in either direction are brilliant beaches, cliffs, and coastal towns to explore.

TENERIFE   Ideas of where to sail: There's blissful beaches, relaxing old towns and national parks to explore on Tenerife, or hop over to La Gomera to check out where Columbus set sail for America! If you're willing to put in the hours, it's also possible to sail to Gran Canaria or super-remote La Frontera.

ARRECIFE, LANZAROTE   Ideas of where to sail: Head to Papagayo bay on the south coast of Lanzarote - arguably the best place to anchor and snorkel in the whole of the Canary islands, then hop to Fuerteventura and the wilderness of Los Lobos, named after the colony of monk seals there. Or sail to the North to the Chinijo archipalego, Europe's biggest national marine park, and play with the dolphins and whales - they love this place as much as you do!

Cost of a Sailing Holiday in Spain?

Prices change depending upon what sort of boat you are chartering, and when you would like to charter, and yachting offers great value for money because the fee includes a full-day activity, a means of transport and your overnight accommodation!

Charters are normally in periods of a week, from Saturday (check-in at 5pm) to Saturday (check-out at 9am), though you're required to be back at the charter base on the Friday evening. You can charter a 3-cabin yacht for as little as €1,140/week (including end cleaning) , 4-cabin yacht from €1,250/week, or catamarans from €2,800/week - Use the pink box above for live prices and availability.

In addition to the charter fee, there is an end-cleaning fee to be paid, and you'll need to leave a security deposit on check-in (similar to a hire car, and usually placed as a pre-authorisation on a credit card).  You also need to consider fuel and Mooring fees .

You can also add transfers, an outboard motor, early check-in, security deposit insurance or other extras to your booking (if they are not already included) for an additional fee.  We can also arrange for a Skipper , Hostess or Chef to be on board - in Spain, these normally cost an average of €1,260 per week, excluding tips.

What types of luxury motor yachts can I charter in Spain?

There is a superb selection of luxury yachts for charter in Spain. Some of these include:

Displacement yachts for charter

Known for their stability and lower centre of gravity, a displacement yacht is the perfect vessel for long-distance cruising in various sea conditions on the Mediterranean Sea and causal cruising along the Spanish coast.

Planing yachts for charter

These yachts are designed for performance, agility, and responsiveness. They handle well at high speeds, offering a thrilling and dynamic experience for those on board a yacht charter in Spanish waters.

Semi-displacement yachts for charter

Semi-displacement yachts can operate efficiently at a range of speeds. At lower speeds, they behave similarly to displacement hulls, cutting through the water with less resistance, resulting in better fuel efficiency. As the speed increases, they transition to a partially planing mode, riding on the water surface rather than ploughing through it, allowing for increased speed without excessive power.

Trideck yachts for charter

Trideck yachts are known for their spaciousness, luxurious amenities, and the ability to provide various entertainment and relaxation options across multiple levels. These vessels cater to discerning clients seeking an elevated yachting experience in the Mediterranean.

Flybridge yachts for charter

The defining feature of a flybridge yacht is the raised deck above the main deck, often accessible via stairs or a ladder. This elevated space provides panoramic views of the surroundings, making it a popular area for socialising, dining, and enjoying the scenery.

Explorer yachts for charter

Explorer yachts have sturdy hulls and reinforced structures to withstand rough seas, ice conditions, and extended voyages. Their design emphasizes durability and safety for long-distance travel, making them ideal for those who wish to explore regions far from typical cruising grounds on a Spain luxury yacht charter.

Superyachts and mega yachts for charter

Superyachts and mega yachts are luxury vessels that exceed traditional yacht sizes, offering unparalleled comfort, amenities, and often extravagant features. They represent the pinnacle of luxury on the seas and are ideal for those who want to indulge in personalized service.

Multi-hull vessels for charter

The most common types of multi-hulls include catamarans and trimarans. Catamarans, in particular, are popular for chartering due to their stability, spaciousness, and comfort, making them an ideal choice for leisure cruising and vacations on the Spanish coast.

No matter what yacht type you seek, Moran Yacht & Ship experts can connect you with your ideal vessel. Contact our team or browse our selection of yachts for charter in Spain below and enjoy pure luxury in one of the world’s top charter destinations.

When is the best time to visit Spain on a yacht charter?

The best time to visit Spain on a yacht charter is during the summer months between June and August, although this can depend on your preferences and the specific regions you plan to explore along the Spanish coastline.

Spring (April to May)

This period offers pleasant weather with mild temperatures, making it ideal for exploring Spain’s southern and eastern coasts. Crowds are fewer compared to the summer months.

Summer (June to August)

Summer is the high season for tourism along the Spanish coast. The weather is warm and perfect for beach activities and cruising. The Balearic Islands, including Mallorca and Ibiza, are popular destinations during this time.

Fall/Autumn (September to October)

Like spring, autumn offers mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and a more relaxed atmosphere. It’s a great time to cruise along the Spanish coastlines and explore historical towns.

Winter (November to March)

While the weather can be cooler, especially in northern Spain, the southern coast tends to be milder. Winter can be a quieter time for yacht charters, but it’s suitable for exploring cities and cultural sites.

How much does it cost to rent a Spanish luxury yacht?

The price of a yacht rental in Spain depends on the yacht’s size, the planned route, and the duration of the charter. Anticipate a minimum cost of US$200,000 per week for a luxury boat rental in Spanish waters, while the most exceptional superyachts can exceed a million dollars per week. Moran Yacht & Ship specializes in crafting outstanding water experiences aboard some of the world’s most exceptional yachts. Our selection of charter yachts showcases vessels built by renowned shipbuilders such as Lürssen, Feadship, Amels, Nobiskrug, and Oceanco. Get in touch with our team today for more information.

What is the Advanced Provisioning Allowance, or APA?

The Advanced Provisioning Allowance, or APA, is designed to cover non-fixed costs, such as fuel, berthing costs, and food and drinks. Your luxury yacht broker will provide an estimated APA based on your needs. The APA is paid before the charter, and the captain will use the funds to cover your day-to-day costs. Any funds left at the end of the charter will be immediately refunded to you, along with a full breakdown of all expenses. During your yacht charter experience, you are free to ask the captain for details of the APA, including what has been used and what remains. The APA typically costs around 10% of the base charter rate.

What amenities can I expect on a luxury yacht?

The type of amenities you can expect on a luxury yacht will depend on the size of the vessel, with larger yachts able to accommodate a larger number of amenities. Moran Yacht & Ship has access to a superb selection of Spanish motor yachts for charter, including the world’s largest vessels. Charterers can expect luxurious cabins with ensuite bathrooms, plush bedding, and stylish interiors that rival high-end hotel suites. Many luxury yachts also have professional chefs on board who craft exquisite meals tailored to guests’ preferences and dining areas that include formal dining spaces and al fresco options. Expansive decks featuring lounging areas, sun pads, Jacuzzis, and outdoor dining setups allow guests to enjoy the sea breeze and stunning views. Some of the biggest vessels are equipped with various water toys for entertainment, such as jet skis, paddleboards, kayaks, wakeboards, snorkeling gear, and sometimes even a water slide.

How many guests can I take on my yacht charter?

Most yachts for charter can accommodate a maximum of 12 guests while cruising. However, some charter vessels can accommodate a larger number of guests. A luxury charter brokerage, like Moran Yacht & Ship, can secure a vessel based on your needs. Contact our team today.

What availability is there for yacht charters in Spain?

While there is a superb selection of luxury Spanish motor yachts for charter, the best vessels are in high demand. We suggest booking a yacht charter in Spain as far in advance as possible, especially during the summer when the area is in peak season. However, last-minute bookings are available. Contact our team if you want to reserve a luxury Spain yacht for charter.

What events can I attend on a yacht charter in Spain?

Spain is famous for its vibrant fiestas and festivals celebrating culture, traditions, and local heritage. Events like the Feria de Abril in Seville (April Fair), La Tomatina in Buñol (tomato throwing festival), and San Fermín in Pamplona (running of the bulls) offer unique cultural experiences.

The country also hosts numerous music festivals throughout the year, including events like Primavera Sound in Barcelona, Sonar Music Festival, and Starlite Festival in Marbella. Bullfighting and Flamenco Shows are part of the rich Spanish heritage that makes this country a bucket-list sailing destination. Experience traditional Spanish entertainment like bullfighting in cities where it’s practiced, such as Seville, and flamenco shows that capture the essence of Spanish culture.

The Copa del Rey Regatta in Palma de Mallorca and the Barcelona International Boat Show are notable events for sailing enthusiasts, while those wishing to explore local markets and food festivals can do so at San Sebastian Gastronomika and the Valencia Rice Festival.

Euros are widely accepted in Spain for various transactions, including payments for marina fees, dining, shopping, and other services related to your yacht charter.

Spain Yacht Charter

Luxury superyacht charters in Spain can be organised at surprisingly reasonable prices. Spain yacht charters on private boats are easily the best way to explore the beautiful Mediterranean coastlines of Spain because your crew know all the best spots. Spain has grown as a crewed yacht charter vacation location in recent years and is now one of the most popular areas in the Mediterranean. Here's why:

Everything about Spain represents the passion and power of an awesome culture. The swirling Flamenco skirts, the flash of the Matador's cloak, the sangria, the tapas, and the rich and flaming personalities of the Spanish. Everything about Spain is red; except the startling blue backdrop of the Mediterranean , where the yachts moor with their shiny hulls, and the silvery green leaves of the olive groves. Balearic Islands , located in the western Mediterranean Sea , are the most sought-after charter destination in Spain with charter itineraries starting and ending in either Mallorca or Ibiza .

On a charter holiday in the Balearics you will come across continuous sunshine, pristine clear waters, beautiful beaches and rugged landscape with plenty of historical sites to visit; including castles, museums and ancient cobbled streets in quaint little towns. You will also see a range of beautiful luxury superyachts moored off shore in the warm Mediterranean waters. The four largest islands to explore are Mallorca (or Majorca), Minorca (Menorca), Ibiza and Formentera (Espalmador).

There are no half-measures on a Spain yacht charter and visitors on a luxury yacht vacation will be bombarded with visual delights, flavoursome cuisine and animated celebrations. Ramble through the evocative old lane of the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona and marvel at Casa Battlo, the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia and Park Guell, all showcasing Gaudi's playful and flowing style that strongly influenced the Art Noveau movement. Picasso grew up in this atmospheric city and the galleries here have the best collection of his earlier work.

The Balearic Islands have some of the very best beaches, some of which can only be accessed by luxury yacht. Party the night away in Ibiza then sail to a secluded anchorage where you can sunbathe in privacy and recover in your sundeck Jacuzzi surrounded by the ambient sounds of nature. The charming seaside towns on Menorca and Mallorca provide a laid-back setting for rest and exploration, while the surrounding seas are clear and offer a wealth of opportunities to break out your water toys.

WINNICO YACHTS in Spain

The northern Catalonian City of Barcelona , Spain’s second largest, is also the launching base for some of Spain’s superyacht charters, for those visitors who wish to add Barcelona to their charter itinerary. The city is a melting pot of gothic and medieval architecture and the culture and nightlife in Barcelona, is as good as anywhere. There are two main marinas in Barcelona, including the newly developed Marina Port Vell. From here it is just a short stroll down to the Las Ramblas, Barcelona's famous main street. It is lined with restaurants, cafe and shops. Some of the 'must-see' sights include the breathtaking 'Sagrada Familia' surrounded by the Gothic Quarter - Barri Gòtic, Park Guell or the Picasso Museum. Barcelona, a Spanish City known for its unique diversity, is a microcosm of rich culture and history and considered as a teeming social milieu in tourist circles.

Mahón is a popular Balearic Islands destination among the yachting crowd for its easy-going character and fine eateries. The settlement has a personality all of its own; Georgian houses show an influence from tourists of a bygone era and guests can taste the locally made gin, tour the ancient ruins or listen to the organ in the serene church Iglesia de Santa Maria.Anchor in one of the many bays to watch the sunset as you dine alfresco aboard your superyacht, then spend your evening hosting your own private sundeck party while the town lights flicker on the water.

The naturally beautiful region of Ciutadella on Menorca will leave your luxury yacht charter party spoiled for choice for beaches and play grounds to break out the water toys. Fishing, snorkelling and diving in this region is also excellent and there is a variety of sea corals and marine life to make colourful photographs to share back home. Wildflowers and ruins throng the hillsides and outside of the peak tourist times, you can have the beach all to yourselves to enjoy a candlelit dinner beside the water. If you crave city life Ciutadella has excellent shops and plenty of cultural hot spots to discover, such as the Talaia Cultura and the Cathedral Ciudadela.

The Spain yacht charter scene has become increasingly popular and the types of yacht charter available in the Balearics, Barcelona, Palma, Valencia and The Costa Brava are all the main types of yacht charter including motor, sailing, bareboat charter, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, luxury yachts and the ever more familiar super yacht charter.

Like most of the Mediterranean , the Spain yacht chartering season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August is the hottest and tends to have lighter winds. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes. Other good times to rent a yacht is generally on either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are still comfortable, and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive in their largest numbers. This is the time that you will see the bulk of the Mediterranean crewed luxury superyachts visiting Spain.

Trina: The Charter was excellent – the Best captain we have ever had and an excellent crew. The boat itself was very well suited to our needs, it was particularly good that all cabins were of a similar size, as you know often the 3rd and 4th cabins can be a little small the design of the boat meant they were all a good size. Spain Yachting: When to Go

The Spanish coast and Balearic Islands enjoy a classic Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild, sometimes rainy winters. And while it is accessible all year long, summer is prime yachting season in Spain, most notably in July and August. These peak months offer hot, sunny days and mild water temperatures that are perfect for outdoor adventures.

In the shoulder season months of May-June and September, the weather and conditions are excellent for yachting, as well. Temperatures hover in the mid-70s, with steady breezes and moderate swells. The shoulder season also offers a reprieve from the crowds of July and August.

Spain Yacht Charters – Where to Go

Spain yacht charters

The majority of Spain yacht charters cruise the Balearic Islands. Regarded for their golden beaches, glimmering bays, and lively harbors, the Balearics – Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera, and Menorca – are one of Europe’s best destinations for a private yacht charter.

The largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca is a stunningly beautiful island, known for its lush, mountainous interior and picturesque seaside villages. Tucked away in the interior, you’ll find countless olive groves, vineyards, and almond groves – a perfect afternoon escape – while the harbors are filled with incredible restaurants, historic Gothic buildings, and excellent shopping.

The most famous of the Balearic Islands, Ibiza is renowned for its vibrant nightlife – the best in all of Europe. Along the streets of Ibiza Town, you’ll find boutique shops, gourmet restaurants, and spas, with Vegas-style clubs around every corner. Spend an afternoon on one of Ibiza’s exclusive beaches, before a night on the town.

Menorca offers a respite from the bustle of the other islands. The entire island is a protected UNESCO nature preserve, offering plenty of opportunities to explore the outdoors. Yet, there’s still plenty of history and culture to explore in the island’s charming ports.

Formentera is the smallest of the Balearics, and it’s also one of the most beautiful. Located just a half-hour cruise from Ibiza, Formentera is the perfect getaway for some R&R. Enjoy the island’s splendid beaches, bask in the sun, and enjoy an al fresco lunch in one of Formentera’s quaint plazas.

VAT (Value Added Tax) in Spain

The following VAT laws pertain to private yacht charters in Spanish waters:

  • If a yacht only cruises through Spanish/EU waters, a standard 21% VAT rate will be applied.
  • All yachts must register with the Spanish Government in each region it intends to charter.

Things to See & Do in Spain

Whether you want to savor a glass of sangria while taking in the sunset, or you’d prefer an adventurous hike in the mountains, Spain offers boat rental itineraries full of memorable experiences. A few highlights include:

Explore Historical Sites   All throughout the Balearic Islands you’ll find numerous UNESCO sites and historical landmarks. From the centuries-old battery Dalt Vila in Ibiza, which offers stunning, 360-degree views, to the Roman ruins on Mallorca, the islands offer plenty of chances to explore the region’s storied past.

Enjoy World-Class Cuisine From southern Spain to Valencia, Barcelona, and the Balearic Islands, every corner of the country has developed a thriving culinary scene. Its most popular dishes – like paella, gazpacho, and chorizo – are coupled with seductive aromatics, like fresh olive oils and garlic. The result: Vibrant dishes that awaken the palette. Plus, the Balearic Islands are well-known for their seafood. Try the lobster stew, a local favorite, that’s served on every island.

Sample Fine Wine As you taste your way through the country, pair your meals with fine Spanish wines and sangrias. Sangria – the red wine, fruit concoction – originates in southern Spain, and you’ll find numerous variations on this classic cocktail while on charter. Inland, you’ll find centuries-old vineyards producing unique, native-grape blends and vintages. Can Rich de Buscatello in Ibiza is a must-visit, known for its amazing wines and stunning scenery?

Escape into Nature  From the sparkling, aquamarine waters, to the lush peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana range, the islands put on a dazzling display of natural beauty. Menorca, also known as the “Green Island,” is a protected UNESCO reserve, and boasts some of the region’s best-kept landscapes. Yet, you’ll find secluded coves, sparkling coastal bays, and dramatic mountain ranges wherever you go.

Clubbing in Ibiza Ibiza offers the best nightlife in Spain if not all of Europe. Around Playa d’en Bossa near Ibiza Town, you’ll find world-famous clubs like Ushuaia, which draw the biggest names in international DJing. San Antonio – on the island’s western coast – is another must-visit nightlife spot, where you’ll find the so-called “sunset strip,” a collection of open-air clubs and bars that stay open all night.

Explore Historic Villages The Balearic Islands are home to some of Spain’s most historic villages and seaside towns. Alcudia in the north of Mallorca is one you can’t miss. The restored walled city boasts a gorgeous Medieval city center. Spend an afternoon exploring the city’s narrow, winding streets, and be sure to visit the town’s bustling weekly market.

While on a Yacht Charter in Spain…

  • Spend an afternoon exploring the historic Ibiza Town, before a night of clubbing near Platja d’en Bossa beach
  • Climb to the top of El Toro on Menorca and enjoy 360-degree views of the island
  • Enjoy a glass of sangria at a seaside bar in Mallorca
  • Spend a day at the Palma Aquarium, which is home to more than 8,000 marine animals
  • Relax and unwind on one of the Balearics sparkling beaches like Es Trenc
  • Explore the Dalt Vila UNESCO site on Ibiza, which overlooks the old town
  • Tour the cliff-top Far de la Mola Lighthouse on Formentera and catch a scenic sunset

Spain Luxury Yacht Charter | Yacht Information

Yacht charter options range from mono-hull sailboats to power catamarans, sailing catamarans, and motor yachts. These yachts are crewed with at least a captain and chef, and your meals and drinks are also made for your tastes.

Motor Yachts

Modern motor yachts are spacious and have large staterooms with private en-suite bathrooms and showers. Depending on the size of the yacht, many can accommodate six or more people. Motor yachts can move quickly from one location to the next, thus maximizing your time. LIGHT HOLIC is a motor yacht that could charter in the Balearic Islands. This 196-foot motor yacht accommodates 12 guests in 6 cabins.

Catamarans are great for first-time sailors and families since they offer a smooth and stable voyage. They are spacious inside and outside, and the separate hulls provide privacy. A good choice for your Spain Luxury Yacht Charter is LA GATTA , a 76-foot sailing catamaran. This roomy yacht accommodates eight guests in 5 cabins.

Power Catamarans

Power catamarans have generous space with many amenities and water toys. Operating costs for fuel are lower. In addition, the ability to get into shallow anchorages is excellent due to the shallow drafts. SASTA , a 78-foot power catamaran, offers a very roomy flybridge for relaxing, entertaining, and watching the sunset. This yacht accommodates eight guests in 4 cabins.

Sailboats with monohulls are a great way to experience the thrill of sailing. The main difference between a catamaran and a monohull sailboat is the number of hulls. A monohull sailboat may not be as spacious as a catamaran of similar size, but it still has plenty of room for comfort. AURELIUS is a beautiful traditional sailboat that would be an excellent choice for sailing the coast of Spain. This 111-foot yacht accommodates six guests in 3 cabins.

It is extremely difficult to beat the diversity of Spain, a relatively small country which is surrounded by one ocean, two different seas and a vast number of diverse cultures, climates, and landscapes. If you’re looking for hot summers, mild winters and rough ocean sailing conditions - Spain is the place to go. However, if you’d like to spend a mild and chilly summer on an atoll, Spain is the best destination for it as well. Even if you want a tropical feel on your sailing holiday, a yacht charter in Spain can offer it too.

Yacht charter in the Mediterranean Coast of Spain offers the opportunity for sailors to discover the Spanish culture at its best, through regions such as Valencia , Catalonia, and the Balearic Islands – Mallorca , Menorca , Ibiza & Formentera. Hop aboard your luxury yacht charter and spend some time in the picturesque and bohemian-like cities and towns of the area: Sitges, Cadaqués, Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Peñíscola etc.

Charter a yacht in the unspoilt northern coast of Spain , well known for the best food offer in southern Europe. Its intact green coastal landscapes of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, and the Basque Country can only be matched with the landscapes of much colder places like Ireland and Scotland.

The Canary Islands , archipelago of volcanic origins in the Atlantic are the place to go if you want to run away on your rental yacht from the cold European winter without leaving Europe.

Sailing Conditions in Spain

You can charter a yacht in Spain throughout the entire year . Both spring and autumn are great for sailing the Mediterranean - the weather is great, but you also have the advantage of escaping the big crowds that come to the area as soon as the summer starts. However, summer is the most popular time for chartering a yacht on the Balearic Islands. As well, a right time for yachting in the northern coast of Spain. Be careful, though, the Atlantic Ocean can get a bit rough at any time of the year and you might need to look for a haven in July or August as well.

Spanish Coast

If you want to rent a yacht in Spain during the winter, between November and February, the Canary Islands are the perfect choice. The climate is mainly sunny and warm , with temperatures very rarely going below  18°C all year round. Besides that, the sea temperature is constantly close to 22°C. There are three main types of climates on the Spanish Coast. Mediterranean Coast climate is characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, dry winters. The average temperature in the winter ranges between 5°C and 15°C, while going up to 26°C and 35°C during the yacht charter season. The sea temperature amounts to around 14°C in February and 25°C in August. Northern Spain climate is colder and much rainier, although the summer tends to be mild and sunny. The average temperature in the winter ranges between 5°C and 10°C, and between 15°C and 23°C during the summer, so keep that in mind if you want to charter a boat in Costa Verde. The sea temperature is around 10°C in February and 22°C in August.

Winds and tides.

The Spanish weather is fairly stable, but it can also be prone to winds , creating the perfect sailing conditions for those who want to embark on an adventure by boat. Borrasca is a thunderstorm or violent squall, especially in the Mediterranean and the Northern Part of Spain. It usually comes from NW, W. Chubasco is a rapid and strong downpour, it starts up very quickly but stops in a matter of minutes. It is quite common throughout the country. It doesn’t come from a specific direction.

Spanish Sailing Conditions

Levante is a hot wind from E, NE, that can be especially strong in the Strait of Gibraltar, where the local conditions increase its power and speed. Another SW wind you will feel on your charter yacht in Spain is lebeche . This one coming from the Sahara, bringing elevated temperatures and sand from the desert. In the Canary Islands area, it is also known as calima . Galerna is stormy, hot, and very humid NW wind that arises unexpectedly on the north coast, especially during the summer season. Wind gusts can go up to more than 100 kilometres per hour. Tramontana originated in the French Central Massif and the Pyrenees, it is a N wind that blows strongly over the Balearic Islands and some parts of Catalonia. Sometimes it can reach speeds close to two hundred kilometres per hour.

Normally, the heights of waves in the Mediterranean range between 0.5 and 1.5 m , and very rarely exceed 5 m. However, the Atlantic and Cantabria coasts are a whole different thing. There, waves can easily go beyond 10 meters during the winter. Actually, the biggest wave recorded in Spain was appeared near to Galicia and was 27,81 meters high.

On the Mediterranean Coast, there are practically no tides . The Cantabrian Coast of Spain has a tidal range of 1 meter . On the Atlantic Coast (Galicia, Canary Islands) tidal range can go up to 2,8 m .

You will hardly notice any sea currents on your charter yacht in the Mediterranean, but this changes on the Atlantic side of the Spanish coast. The Galician coast is under the influence of cold currents all year long, but the more east you sail, the warmer water you will get.

The hottest averages are in the summer with 28°C in July and August however, it’s still warm enough to swim in the winter! That’s right, Malaga is warm and sunny year-round and if you want to avoid crowds we recommend visiting in May or September. It will be slightly cooler at around 23°C, but you can still go for a swim and you’ll get better deals on Malaga yacht rentals.

What can I see and do while on a yacht charter in Malaga?

There’s a reason that Malaga is one of Spain’s most sought-after sailing destinations—and that’s because there’s so much to see and do! Whether you want a lazy beach day or a cultural excursion, you’ll find what you’re looking for in this spectacular city. Here are some of our favourite activities to add to your Malaga sailing itinerary.

  • Visit the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro castles: These two ancient fortresses sit atop a hill overlooking Malaga city and offer stunning views of the surrounding area. The Alcazaba was built by the Moorish rulers of Spain in the 11th century, while the Gibralfaro was added later on by the Christian king, Alfonso XI. Visitors can explore the remains of both castles, including their extensive gardens and ramparts.
  • Stroll around El Palo: This traditional fishing village is located just east of Malaga city and makes for a pleasant day trip. Wander around the village's narrow streets, stop for some seafood at one of its many restaurants and enjoy views of the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Sail to Isla de Graciosa: Just off the coast of Malaga is Isla de Graciosa, a small island that makes for a great day trip. While on the island you can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of its sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.
  • Visit La Concepción botanical gardens: Located just outside of Malaga city centre, these gardens are home to over 5,000 species of plants and flowers from all over the world.
  • Explore Malaga's Old Town: The Old Town is one of the best places to see in Malaga if you're interested in its history and culture. Walk around its winding streets, visit its museums and churches and soak up views of its beautiful architecture.
  • Take a day trip: Head to nearby destinations like Granada, Seville and Ronda. If you have time, you can even visit Gilbraltar!
  • Soak up the sun on one of Malaga’s beaches: Playa de la Malagueta is a popular spot for sunbathing and swimming, while El Palo is ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Other iconic beaches include Playa de los Locos, El Chorro and La Barrosa.
  • Go scuba diving: Try your luck at El Chorrillo de Marbella. This incredible dive spot is full of vibrant colours from the surrounding coral reef and is home to an abundance of unique species such as moray eels, cuttlefish, crabs and barracudas. For more experienced divers, head over to Cala de Mijas and explore its many underwater caves and tunnels. This spectacular spot offers a great opportunity to observe all kinds of marine life up close, including sea bass, moray eels, octopus and much more. You'll even find some amazing wrecks from World War II!

Should I have a skipper on board my private yacht rental in Malaga?

Our large fleet of yacht rentals in Malaga includes both skippered vessels as well as those without a skipper, so you can find the perfect one for your boat trip. Even if you have a licence to sail we always recommend a skippered vessel for a more relaxing and worry-free holiday. Skippers will handle all of the logistics like docking, anchoring and sailing the vessel so you can spend more time with the ones that you love. The best part about having a skipper present is the fact that they are usually locals, so they can give you recommendations and help you see everything on your travel itinerary, and more.

So, what are you waiting for? Sail in the capable hands of a skipper and allow them to be your private tour guide around Malaga.

What type of boat should I choose for my Malaga yacht rental?

While browsing the Scansail website, you might be wondering which type of boat you should choose for your yacht rental in Malaga, and the answer to this will depend on the amount of time you plan to be out on the water. For a shorter holiday of less than a week, you shouldn’t need more than a RIB or a motorboat, which are usually chartered by the day. A longer holiday of a week or more will require more amenities and accommodations, such as a kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms. Catamarans and yachts are spacious vessels usually rented by the week, perfect for a longer holiday with family and friends. For people who like sailing for sport, we’d recommend a sailboat. If you’re a novice sailor but still want an authentic sailing experience, a skippered sailboat is a fantastic option.

Find the perfect vessel for your sailing trip in Malaga with Scansail, and have the holiday of a lifetime.

Parsifal III: Meet the charter star of Below Deck's sailing yacht spin-off

This week, producers have confirmed season five of hit reality TV show Below Deck Sailing Yacht will return to screens on 7 October for more crew drama and on-the-water antics. Set on the Balearic island of Ibiza, the series will again feature the 54-metre Perini Navi superyacht Parsifal III with Captain Glenn Shephard at the helm. In anticipation of the series' return, BOAT reflects on an interview with her owner Kim Vibe-Petersen , who unpacked the realities of filming a reality TV series on board his boat ahead of season three.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht is a spin-off series of the hit superyacht reality TV show Below Deck that follows the lives of the crew and guests across an eight-week charter season. For Danish owner Kim Vibe-Petersen, Parsifal III' s return is yet another opportunity to show off the yacht's charter credentials.

Vibe-Petersen was personally approached by Below Deck producers in 2018 after they struggled to find a suitable sailing yacht. Parsifal III fitted the bill as she was already equipped for charter and a number of her existing crew were willing to take part in the show.

The Perini Navi sailing yacht first hit the water in 2005 and rose to instant fame scoring a number of prestigious accolades including a coveted Neptune at the World Superyacht Awards . On her launch, she also joined the ranks as one of the fast Perini Navi superyachts on the water with a top speed of 18 knots under full sail granted by two high-tech carbon masts, automated in-boom furling and a winged keel.

Vibe-Petersen admitted there were some yacht owners who didn’t want the names of their yachts connected with the drama-filled reality show, but he "didn’t have that concern." Although he had the option to change the yacht’s name for filming, he decided to keep it to maximise the charter appeal of  Parsifal III .

"It’s free advertising," he said. "The name of the yacht will come to people’s minds, especially to someone who has never chartered a yacht before. They will see that name and know the boat from the show."

Vibe-Petersen was also keen to secure a guaranteed packed charter schedule during low season. "I think there were a lot of boats that did not want to be chartered for the show but it's good money in the bank," he said.

While admitting he might not be the "specific audience targeted by the series," he said he has sat down to watch the first series, which took place in Corfu. Even in Vibe-Peterson’s home country of Denmark, the US show has gained a big following.

"This is the kind of show where they want to make a little drama," he added. "It’s not that wild on board a normal charter." The conveyor belt of colourful guests are chosen by the production team and given a "big discount" for appearing on the show.

Vibe-Petersen also explained the complicated logistics of filming Below Deck , each season of which features 16 charters filmed across a period of eight weeks. This means that two groups of guests separately charter the yacht in a single week. Meanwhile, the production team require a time period of at least a week to get  Parsifal III  rigged up and fit for filming. "There are 30 people on board each day with lots of wires and cameras – it’s a big, big operation."

Season one was filmed in Corfu, Greece, which posed a number of challenges for  Parsifal III as the sailing yacht was required to have a specific charter licence. "It’s pretty tough to get that," said Vibe-Petersen. "It’s not something we can do within a short amount of time. It can take 10 to 12 weeks to get a charter licence so it takes time."

For her second season, Parsifal III was filmed cruising Croatia's 3,600 miles of coastline. For season three, the show follows Parsifal III as she cruises around the Spanish island of Menorca, carrying a mix of new and old crew.

Season five of Below Deck Sailing Yacht will feature returning department heads chief stew Daisy Kelliher and first mate Gary King, while chef Cloyce Martin, chief engineer Davide Morosi, stews Diana Cruz and Danni Warren, and deckhands Keith Allen and Emma Crouch are amongst the new crew members.

Parsifal III is managed for charter by Camper & Nicholsons with a weekly charter rate starting from €245,000.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch, 2 US citizens among missing after luxury yacht sinks off Sicily

15 people were rescued and one body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, by andrea rosa and nicole winfield | the associated press • published august 19, 2024 • updated on august 19, 2024 at 6:21 pm.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury sailing yacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was  acquitted in June  in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue some of the 15 survivors, who included Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother. The father, James Emsley, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Francesco Cefalu’ said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

Among the dead and missing, four were British, two were American, and one was a man with dual citizenship from Canada and Antigua, according to Luciano Pischedda, the Italian Coast Guard official overseeing the rescue operations.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not-guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s  2011 acquisition  of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The  fraud accusations  represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.

AP writers Danica Kirka and Sylvia Hui contributed from London.
