Keels and Wheels 2023: Attend vintage, classic car and boat show at Lakewood Yacht Club

HOUSTON - Take a stroll through the largest gathering of classic cars and boats bringing enthusiasts from all over the world this weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday, the 27th Annual Keels & Wheels Concours D’Elegance at the Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook. The gates for the show will open on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. anf on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event is inviting Vintage and Contemporary race cars from LeMans, Indy, Formula 1 cars, NASCAR, and others, as well as racing boats of all types.

The cars in the car show will be divided into around 40 classes. There will be awards given to Best of Class and Silver in each class and the ultimate award in as the "Commodores Award" for Best of Show.

The boat show will be divided into around 20 classes of all classic and vintage boats. There will be awards given for the boa show too for Best of Class and Silver in each boat class and Corinthian Awards will be given to boats deserving of Special Mention. The presentation will end with the ultimate award known as the "Commodores Award" for Best of Show.

All judging for the show will take place on Saturday with awards given out on Sunday.

Keels & wheels 2021, the tradition rolls back in.

Classic car and wooden boat enthusiasts are gearing up for the 25th Annual Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance event on Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2, 2021 at the Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook, TX.

Keels & Wheels began as a dream where current Concours Chairman, Bob Fuller envisioned a world-class boat show that also included classic cars. In his dreams, he saw beautiful vintage automobiles parked along a tree-lined road leading to the old entrance of the Yacht Club, where classic boats would fill the water. Fuller pitched this idea to fellow Yacht Club member and Co-Founder, Paul Merryman and the board of Lakewood Yacht Club, and the first ever-event of its kind was held in 1996.

Since its inception, the Keels & Wheels event has become the nation’s largest classic car and vintage wooden boat show, displaying over 200 automobiles and 100 boats, brought from all over the world, and attracts more than 10,000 spectators from the U.S. and Europe. Over the years, some of the most notable cars that have partaken in this truly unique event included Pre-War Packards, Corvettes (1953-1972), Bentley’s, Duesenberg, American Muscle Cars, Porsche (1948-1973), Super Cars, Shelby’s and Vintage Motorcycles. The event has also featured Century Boats, Yellow Jacket Boats, and Chris Craft Racing Runabouts.

Headlining the event this year will be the cars featured and used in the movie, “Ford v. Ferrari.” Depicting the journey to the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans in France when a trio of Ford GT40’s claimed victory over a previously dominant Ferrari team. Both the Ken Miles Hero GT40 Mark II and the Ferrari 330 P3 #27 will be available for spectators to view at Lakewood Yacht Club.

While Keels & Wheels draws in vintage car and boat lovers alike, they have raised more than $1.8 million for local charities. This year, Fuller hopes that the program will be able to increase that number to $2 million, with the Lighthouse Charity Team, Today’s Harbor for Children, and the Cole Gordon Helping Hand Foundation benefiting from their efforts.

Paul Merryman – Antique Boats Docking Soon!

When Paul Merryman, the captain of the Keels, looks back on 25 years, he is amazed that it is now so much bigger than he ever imagined. This idea that started as a brainstorm with Bob Fuller over a bottle of scotch, has developed into a show with a national following and renown recognition for its antique cars and boats. “Most shows have a typical run of 15 to 18 years. We’ve survived for twenty-five!” Paul mused.

Paul, a native Houstonian, grew up coming to Seabrook to boat and fish almost every weekend with his family as a youngster. He remembers the excitement of watching Holmes Boat Yard off Harrisburg building his family’s boat over several months until they could finally launch it on Easter in 1955. His admiration for the fine craftsmanship and meticulous construction sparked his love for being on the water and the beautiful vessels that carry him there. He still owns this treasured boat, a true one-of-a-kind from a time when they were built with handtools and mettled know-how with a legacy to last forever.

Paul has guided Keels & Wheels to expand their definition of antique boats to include old fiberglass boats, too. Many of today’s boat owners were born after a time when the wooden classics ruled the waters and have fond memories of skiing behind the modern ones from the 1970’s. He stresses the importance of including them just like the Wheels part of the show includes the muscle cars from the 1960’s. Making these changes can draw in a larger audience who can see vehicles they remember from their childhood plus create a new appreciation for those from earlier decades in the 1900’s. “I have heard people say they didn’t know that they used to build boats out of wood,” Paul laughed. Most of owners of the older boats at Keels & Wheels have restored them personally.

When spectators take the time to ask about the restoration process, they will learn that each of these boats are unique because they were built by hand. One side might be deeper or longer than the other, joints may not match exactly, or old motors may need specially built parts because they just aren’t available any more. Paul restores his own boats and says he can easily lose track of time in his shop while he replaces boards or ribcages. Boat restoration is definitely a labor of love as these projects can take years before completion. Plus, Paul admits to being a perfectionist, wanting the boat to looks just like it did when it originally came out of the factory.

Paul encourages everyone to come and enjoy the weekend at Keels & Wheels. He emphasizes that this is a great family event where the kids (and some adults!) can learn about history, old vehicles, and antique boats. “Expose the youngsters to the ways people used to build things with just the tools that were available. Let them see how it was done before technology and computers,” Paul advises. He hopes that this great event will continue well into the future while he and the Keels & Wheels Board works to update and improve this fabulous show.

For more than 70 years, Today’s Harbor for Children has served as a force of change in addressing the facets of abuse and neglect for children in crisis. The Harbor gives their kids a home and community that cares for them. Each child is placed in a cottage on campus with parents that champion their success and support their future. The children have playmates, chores, a regular dinnertime and a charter school on campus for elementary and middle school. The Cole Gordon Helping Hand Foundation

The Cole Gordon Helping Hand Foundation is a non-profit organization, inspired by the late Cole Gordon, dedicated to uniting people through livestock projects and encouraging selfless giving so that we may achieve purpose greater than ourselves. We strive to support youth through FFA, Animal Science, Food Safety and Event Planning. Our purpose is to provide some financial assistance to those where money may be an obstacle to them by involving them livestock, providing food education and food safety to those interested in working in restaurants and entertainment industry, giving them a head start in the business world, and educating youth with event planning like what is needed to plan and execute a successful event from 50-500 people. The Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance Classic Car and Boat Show will proudly display over 280 classic vehicles at the Lakewood Yacht Club in beautiful Seabrook, TX, on  May 4th and May 5th, 2024. This nationally acclaimed classic Concours d’Elegance is the single largest vintage car and wooden boat show in the country and attracts over 10,000 car and boat lovers from all over the world.

The Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance will feature a FREE car show on Saturday and an official Concours d’Elegance on Sunday that includes competition and judging for multiple trophies and awards.

There will be over 200 cars separated into 40 unique classes that range from old antique cars from 1900 to modern supercars from 2024. Below is a full list of famous vehicle makes, models, manufacturers, brands, and marques that will be featured at the car show.

The event provides a one-of-a-kind lakefront display of classic vehicles from all over the world while celebrating an educational experience for the history and evolution of automobiles and boating.

Beyond a good time, The Keels & Wheels event raises money for major charities. Over the years, Keels &Wheels has supported local charities such as the Boys and Girls Clubs of Houston, The Leukemia Society, The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, The Boys and Girls Harbor, and Today’s Harbor for Children Foundation. Over the past 26 years, the event has raised over $1.8 Million for local Charities.

FEATURED CLASSIC CARS ON DISPLAY Car classes will be organized into about 40 unique classes including the following

• American and European Post & Pre War Cars Years 1920 – 1972, Antique Cars from 1900 – 1919, Chevrolet Vehicles of the 40s – 60s, and Pick Up Trucks everything before 1950.
• From over the pond, European classic cars on display will be from legendary European marques such as Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Ferrari, BMW, Maserati, Mercedes, MG, Jaguar, Morgan, Porsche, Triumph, and the Grand Daddy of them all, Rolls-Royce & Bentley.
• From the USA, some of the famous classic collectible cars on display will be from such famous iconic brands as Corvette, Mustang, Ford GT 40, Shelby, Packard, Cadillac LaSalle, Lincoln, and Thunderbird.
• Lastly, the specialty vehicle collection classics display will be Electric Cars, Supercars, Motorcycles, Hot Rods, Street Rods & Rat Rods

FEATURED VINTAGE WOODEN BOATS ON DISPLAY

The Vintage boat competition and the show will take place in the Lakewood Yacht Club Marina on both Saturday, May 6, and Sunday, May 7 from 9 am to 5 pm.

The boat show will be broken down into unique classes such as Cruiser, Runabout, Historic, Historic Sail, etc. Additionally, they will be separated into categories such as Historic, Antique, Classic, Contemporary, and Replica. Below are the classes and categories that will both be on display and judged for awards.

• Historic Boats that were built before 1919
• Antique & Historic Boats manufactured from 1919 to 1942
• Classic Boats that were built between 1943 and 1975
• Late Classic Era Boats Boats were built between 1976 to 1990
• Contemporary Wooden Boats built over the past 25 years.
• Custom Boats that have been modified in any way
• Classic Glass Boats with glass bottoms up to 1990 only
• Replica Boats are built to copy historic boats of any year.

AWARDS & PRESENTATIONS After the cars are judged on Saturday, Formal Awards will be presented on Sunday. Awards will be presented by the coveted “Best of Class” Award (One for each vehicle class), the “Corinthian Awards”,  and the “Commodores Award” for Best of Show. 

2023 KEELS & WHEELS “BEST OF SHOW” The 1932 Packard Convertible Coupe was awarded Best in Class , alongside the 1935 Auburn 851 Speedster , which also earned a Best in Class title. The event honored Tony Gullo Sr. as the 2023 Collector of the Year , celebrating his significant contributions to the collector community. Additionally, the 1978 Bertram 585 , named “Liberty Belle” and owned by Richard Mitchell of Montgomery, TX, triumphed in the Classic Cruiser category, securing 1st Place for its exceptional condition and historic significance.

Just a quick reminder to plan to enter your Classic Automobile or Vintage Boat in the upcoming 27th Anniversary of Keels & Wheels, set for May 6 -7, 2023. CLICK HERE FOR ENTRY. In addition to American and European Pre-War and Post-War Classics, we are honoring 100 years of MG cars, 70 years of Corvette, and 100 years of LeMans. Our theme for the 27th Annual Celebration is “Racing Thru Time, Man’s Need For Speed”. We are inviting vintage and contemporary race cars from LeMans, Indy, Formula One, Nascar, and others, as well as racing boats of all types, to join us. For Those Entering Boats: Due to having the K&W Show on Lakewood property, LYC requires that all Boat Exhibitors in the water at Lakewood must have valid liability insurance for their boat. This is consistent with other ACBS-sponsored events:  Tahoe, ACBS International Annual Shows.    This can be accomplished in several ways: If you have insurance on your boat, you should be covered. Please check your policy. If you have an umbrella insurance policy, you may also be covered. Please check your policy. If you need liability insurance for your boat, there is a local insurance broker (details below) who has provided coverage for under $100, based on the cost to a 26 ft wooden Chris Craft. For those planning to show your boat on its trailer, your insurance coverage should be part of your auto insurance policy while moving your boat to its position in the Show.  Again, please check you policy. Keels & Wheels Concours d'Elegance is a weekend-long, nationally acclaimed classic car and vintage wooden boat show that takes place each spring at the Lakewood Yacht Club in beautiful Seabrook, Texas. Keels & Wheels welcomes approximately 200 cars and 100 boats, and has raised more than $1.6 million for local charities, while drawing thousands of participants and spectators from all over the U.S. and Europe.

Club Concours VIP experience during Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance is for those that want to relax and entertain employees, clients and other guest. We want you to feel at home in our seated areas designated just for you. Come enjoy the beautiful view of Clear Lake while enjoying the open bar and the many amenities provided. This is a VIP experience designed for those who want to enjoy all that Keels & Wheels and Lakewood Yacht Club have to offer.

Club Concours passes are $250 (includes a Saturday and Sunday pass).

Non-CC members’ tickets are available for $50 each.
