Sailing Charters to the Greek Islands
Greece is home to over 1400 islands running from isolated islets to some of the most famous islands in the world (Santorini or Mykonos anyone?). No matter what your tastes run to: secluded beaches, nightlife and culture, archaeological and historical sites… or a combination of everything together, you will find a suitable island in Greece. We guarantee, if you like sailing, you are going to love sailing in Greece!
One of the great advantages of sailing in Greece is the small distances between many of the islands. If you have a week (or even a weekend!) you may easily visit islands in the Saronic Gulf or the Cyclades from Athens. If you have longer than a week then take your time and relax, exploring your chosen islands in greater detail, or visit more islands to tick them off your holiday checklist!
For more information we invite you to browse our suggested sailing routes with details on popular island itineraries and sailing distances. For the more practically minded bareboat sailors, the fantastic Greek Cruisers Wiki offers many details on sailing in Greece and the marinas and facilities available on various islands.
Crewed Yacht Charters
Sail Greece is pleased to offer fully crewed charters upon request. With our crewed charters your boat comes with a crew to sail your boat and a hostess to prepare your meals on board. The safety and management of the boat is the responsibility of your captain while day to day shopping and preparation of the meals is the duty of your hostess. You simply sit back and enjoy your stress free and relaxing sailing vacation in Greece! Contact us for more details.

Our boats in Athens are moored at the cosmopolitan Alimos Marina on the Western coast, ideally situated for heading straight to the islands of the Saronic Gulf or sailing out to the Western Cyclades .
For those of you that are pressed for time or not interested in some Athenian sight-seeing, we also have a charter base in Lavrion , less than half-an-hour drive from the Athens Airport on the east coast of Attica and perfect if you want to be sailing just an hour or two after landing!

Our fleet in Alimos Marina includes a diverse range of brand new sailing yachts and catamarans to suit every taste. Arriving in Athens
Alimos Marina is located on the southwest coastline of Athens, just 15km from the city center, 8km south of the central Piraeus port, and 30km from the Athens International Airport, a 35-50 minute taxi ride, depending on traffic. Public transport options are also available.

Suggested Sailing Itineraries from Athens
From our base in Athens, sailors typically follow one of two main sailing itineraries that are, broadly speaking, focused either in the Saronic Gulf or the Cyclades archipelago. Of course you are free to choose whatever itinerary you wish and we are always happy to offer suggestions and recommendations.
The Saronic Gulf
The Saronic Gulf islands of Aegina , Poros , Hydra , Spetses and the Peloponnesian coast offer smooth sailing largely sheltered from strong winds. The Saronic sailing route, centered around the gulf, is highly recommended for easy sailing, especially in July & August, when the strong northern " meltemi " winds are usually strong further south in the Cyclade. It is also preferable for a charter of less than two weeks due to the relatively short sailing times between popular destinations.
Along this route you will find breathtaking vistas of cosmopolitan island towns , ancient temples, Byzantine castles, small fishing ports and unspoiled anchorages . The wind force of the annual N-NW Meltemi is usually not stronger than force 4-5, and can be significantly lower around the Island of Poros and the Methana Peninsula. There is also a possibility for some light S-SE winds, especially close to the Peloponnesian coast.
The Cyclades
The Cyclades is a group of Islands lying amidst the amazing Aegean Sea . They are world famous for the beauty of their rough, rocky landscapes merging with the crystal-clear sea, the traditional white-washed houses and windmills, and the endless possibilities they offer for exploring and sightseeing. Needless to say, some of the islands are well-known, to put it mildly, for their nightlife (Mykonos we are looking at you).
Cruising in this archipelago definitely requires skilled, experienced sailors as the winds, especially in July and August, can easily reach Force 6-7 N-NW, with the norm being Force 4-5 N-NW (the so called Meltemi annual winds). If you decide to sail the Cyclades you should certainly consider the more famous islands including Paros , Santorini , Mykonos , Serifos and Milos . Although, in all honesty, every island in the Cyclades is a true gem waiting to be discovered and many of our guests sail the area repeatedly to visit islands they have not yet had the time to explore.
Sample 7 Day Itinerary to the Saronic Gulf
Day 1: alimos marina to perdika or agia marina bay.
Day 1 starts at Alimos Marina where you can set sail for a relaxing 3-4 hour journey to either Perdika Port or Agia Marina Bay, both on the island of Aegina. In Perdika , you can stroll along the traditional fishing village, try local seafood at one of the waterfront tavernas, and take in the picturesque harbour views. If you choose Agia Marina Bay , you'll find a beautiful sandy beach, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Overnight, you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of either destination.
Day 2: Aegina to Hydra
Today you'll sail for approximately 4-5 hours to reach the stunning island of Hydra . This picturesque island is known for its stone mansions and lack of cars. Wander through the narrow cobblestone streets, visit the Historical Archives Museum , or enjoy a leisurely coffee at a local café. In the evening, watch the sunset from the port, and take in the island's enchanting atmosphere.
Day 3: Hydra to Spetses or Dokos
Day 3 takes you on a 2-3 hour journey to either Spetses or Dokos Bay. In Spetses , you can explore the island's rich history at the Spetses Museum, stroll along the waterfront promenade, or rent a bike to tour the island. If you choose Dokos Bay , you'll find a secluded, unspoiled anchorage perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying the natural beauty of the area.
Day 4: Spetses or Dokos to Agios Emilianos Bay or Hinitsa Bay
On Day 4, sail for 2-3 hours to either Agios Emilianos Bay or Hinitsa Bay, both located near the island of Spetses. Agios Emilianos Bay offers a tranquil spot to swim, snorkel, or simply relax on the beach. If you opt for Hinitsa Bay , you'll find a sheltered cove with a sandy beach, perfect for water sports or sunbathing.
Day 5: Agios Emilianos or Hinitsa to Poros
Day 5 takes you on a 3-4 hour journey to the charming port of Poros . This island town boasts a vibrant waterfront, filled with shops, cafés, and traditional tavernas. Visit the Archaeological Museum, hike to the Clock Tower for panoramic views, or rent a scooter to explore the island's lush hills and stunning beaches.
Day 6: Poros to Palaia Epidavros Port or Agistri
On Day 6, sail for 2-3 hours to either Palaia Epidavros or Agistri (Aponistros Bay). In Palaia Epidavros, you can discover the ancient theatre of Epidavros , stroll through the quaint village, and dine on fresh seafood. If you prefer the quiet Agistri you will enjoy swimming, snorkeling, or relaxing on the beach, surrounded by the island's lush greenery.
Day 7: Palaia Epidavros or Agistri to Oni and back to base
On the final day, sail for 2-3 hours to Oni, a small island next to Aigina. Enjoy a refreshing swim on either the southern or northern side, depending on the weather. After your swim, embark on a 2-3 hour journey back to Alimos Marina in Athens, where your unforgettable sailing adventure in the Saronic Gulf comes to an end.

The very best places to charter in Greece
Published 19 September 2024
Quaint white washed villages, windswept islands, clear blue waters, protected harbours and pristine beaches — Greece is a yachting playground for good reason. There are a wealth of places in Greece to discover on a yacht charter, from iconic islands like Santorini to lesser-visited petite islands and exploring the coast of the mainland. On a Greek yacht charter, you can find yourself the sole vessel moored in front of a quiet beach you can only reach by boat, dance the day away at a Mykonos beach club or visit historic archaeological sites. No matter your interests, stepping on board a private yacht in the Greek islands can take you there.
The Cyclades Islands
From the clifftop views of Santorini to the boho-chic atmosphere on Mykonos, the Cyclades stand out among the best places to charter in Greece. But even beyond these iconic locales, there are a plethora of smaller isles that deserve your time and are easy to visit on a Cyclades island yacht charter.
With soul-stirring sunsets, black-sand volcanic beaches, historical sites and photo-worthy vistas, Santorini is one of the most sought after islands in the Cyclades. Mykonos is a favourite as well, thanks to its vibrant nightlife (and daytime) party scene, high-end restaurants and beautiful anchorages framed by perfect beaches.
Other islands not to miss in the Cyclades include Paros, which has charming villages and the ideal conditions for windsurfing or kitesurfing. Milos is famed for its dramatic landscape, highlighted by caves and cliffs which can be explored by boat. Of course, Greece is also renowned for its dining, and on the laidback island of Sifnos you can sample octopus bruschetta and grilled squid at its seaside tavernas.
The Saronic Islands
Sailing in Greece from Athens to the Saronic islands is such a quick jaunt that it ’ s no wonder that many escape the capital city to visit. The Saronic Islands and surrounding coastline are home to many second homes for Athenians, such as the island of Septses , where you ’ ll find plenty of luxe boutiques, art galleries and fine dining eateries. The island ’ s grand mansions and horse-drawn carriages add a touch of elegance .
Meanwhile, the nearby island of Hydra is totally devoid of cars and exudes an old world charm — not to mention unparalleled sunset views from its hillside bars overlooking the sea. Hydra has long been known as an artist ’ s haven, attracting everyone from Jeff Koons to Henry Miller, and this bohemian, artsy vibe is still felt.
About an hour from Athens, Poros combines lush pine forests with a vibrant waterfront dotted with neoclassical architecture, upscale cafes and boutiques. Poros actually consists of two islands, Sphairia and Kalaureia , which are connected by a small bridge. The island is also home to historical sites like the Temple of Poseidon — dating back to 520 BC, the temple offers a glimpse into the island's rich history.
A more modern landmark is the clock tower, built in 1927, that watches over Poros town. Poros offers a winning blend of natural beauty, historical significance and a laidback atmosphere, perfect for a luxurious destination when embarking on a sailing Greek yacht charter.
The Dodecanese Islands
Further away from mainland Greece are the Dodecanese Islands, which are actually closer to the coast of Turkey than Athens. The archipelago has 15 larger islands and another 150 smaller islands. Larger islands in the chain include Kos, Patmos and Rhodes, to name a few. There ’ s also the chance to combine a visit here with a cruise along Turkey ’ s stunning coastline.
Rhodes, Lindos
With 300 days of sunshine per year, the island of Rhodes welcomes more sunshine than any other Greek island. But it’s more than the sunny weather that makes Rhodes an ideal Greek yacht charter destination. The largest of the Dodecanese Islands, Rhodes boasts a winning blend of ancient history, cosmopolitan charm, and natural beauty.
There are quite a few sites of historical significance to be found on the island, such as the Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes Old Town, which now houses a museum. In the picturesque village of Lindos on Rhodes, an enormous castle-like structure known as the Acropolis of Lindos is perched atop a steep cliff, showcasing sweeping views of the surrounding sea and the village below.
Lindos village itself is a labyrinth of winding, narrow streets that are bursting with traditional tavernas and chic boutiques, while the long, sandy strip of Lindos’s main beach is ideal for families with its calm and shallow water.
Set in the northeast of the Aegean Sea, Samos is a bewitching island home to ancient architecture, serene beaches and a bustling harbour . The old port town of Pythagoreion is winning of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, thanks to its fortified walls that protect the port. History buffs will also enjoy exploring the Tunnel of Eupalinos , a n ancient aqueduct built in the 6th century BC, considered an engineering marvel of its time and the well-preserved Roman baths, a nod to when Rome ruled this island.
Nature lovers will want to hike up to the Potami waterfalls or swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lemonakia beach. Samos is famous for its muscat wine, so wine aficionados will want to make to visit the Samos Wine Museum in Malagari to learn about — and sample — the island ’ s local wines. Charter yacht guests can also experience local festivals, including the Fishermen Festival in June and the Samos Wine Festival taking place later in the summer.
The Ionian Islands
Located off the west coast of mainland Greece, the Ionian Islands comprise seven main islands: Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Lefkada , Ithaca, Paxos, and Kythira. These serene cruising grounds are a popular spot for sailing Greece on a yacht charter, island-hopping along the way. The islands here are known for their verdant landscapes, beautiful beaches, and charming village s.
Corfu is a longtime getaway of the British elite, with a gorgeous stretch of coastline that one might mistake for the French Riviera with mansions dotting the shoreline and hillsides. Then on the island of Ithaca, you can step back into the time of Greek mythology on the mythical home of Odysseus and even visit the Cave of the Nymphs, a mythological site associated with Homer ’ s Odyssey.
Kefalonia, Assos
On the largest of the Ionian islands, Assos is a small, idyllic village is set on a narrow isthmus that connects to a rocky peninsula, surrounded by the azure waters of the Ionian Sea. With buildings painted in bright pastel colours, balconies draped in bright bougainvillea flowers, and narrow cobbled streets, it can easily be argued that this is one of the most charming villages in all of the Ionian islands. Adding to this level of beauty is the ruins of the Assos Castle, set on a hillside overlooking the village. A hike up to the 16th century Venetian-built castle will reward you with views of the town and sparkling sea beyond.
The largest of all the Greek islands, Crete is known for its diverse terrain, from rugged mountains to pristine beaches, its charming towns and luxurious accommodations ashore. In Chania old town, on the northwest corner of the island, you can wander through narrow alleys lined with Venetian and Ottoman architecture that’s brimming with boutiques and welcoming tavernas.
This side of Crete is also home to many wow-worthy beaches where you can drop anchor and enjoy an al fresco meal taking in the views. Step ashore in Elafonissi Beach — known for its pink sand and clear turquoise waters, it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Hikers will enjoy a ramble up to dramatic sights of Samaria Gorge.
On the eastern end of the island, mountainous vistas seem to tumble into the sea. Cruise into the protected harbour of Elounda, which hosts upscale hotels and exclusive villas on shore, and visit Vai Beach, famous for its palm forest, the largest in Europe, and a beautiful sandy beach.
The Peloponnese Peninsula
The Peloponnese Peninsula, located in southern Greece, is a region rich in history, natural beauty and cultural heritage. On a Greek yacht charter around the Peloponnese Peninsula , you can step onshore to visit ancient sites and medieval towns. A few not-to-miss historical sites here include Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, where you can see the ancient stadium and learn about its history in an excellent archaeological museum. The ruins of Epidaurus are renown for ancient theater with exceptional acoustics, which is still used for performances today, and the Sanctuary of Asclepius.
A charming seaport town with neoclassical architecture, the Palamidi Fortress, and the Bourtzi Castle on an islet in the harbour, Nafplio is an ideal base for a luxurious yacht charter. Known for its beautiful harbour lined with elegant buildings, waterfront eateries and charming old town, it’s a winning port of call during a Greek yacht charter. From Nafplio, you can easily reach beautiful nearby islands and coastal areas such as Spetses, Hydra and the Argolic Gulf’s hidden coves and beaches.
The Sporades Islands
Located in the northwest Aegean Sea, the Sporades Islands are a group of lush, green islands known for their pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters and quaint villages. The main islands in the Sporades include Skiathos, Skopelos , Alonissos and Skyros. The island of Skopelos is somewhat famous as being one of the main filming locations for the film Mamma Mia! starring Meryl Streep. Skopelos is renowned for its lush pine forests, beautiful beaches and scenic landscapes , and its wealth of natural beauty was showcased in the movie .
The nearby island of Alonissos is home to the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades, a protected area known for its rich marine life, including the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. Fittingly, the island offers excellent diving opportunities, including numerous underwater caves and shipwrecks. Skiathos boasts more than 60 stunning beaches, including the famous Koukounaries Beach with its golden sand and turquoise waters. The island of Skyros is known for its rich cultural heritage, traditional crafts and the famous Skyrian ponies.
Don't forget Mainland Greece
While the many island chains of Greece can steal the limelight, one should not overlook the charms of mainland Greece. Most Greek yacht rentals will include a visit to Athens. The capital of Greece is steeped in history and feels a bit like an open air museum with ancient landmarks are on display.
Visit the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to see iconic structures like the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike and the Propylaea. Stroll through Plaka, the picturesque old neighbourhood of Athens. And indulge in Greek cuisine at one of the many rooftop eateries that overlooks the city, with views of the Acropolis lit up in the background at night.
Other places on mainland Greece well worth the visit include the coast of Parga, located on the northwestern corner of the country, which stands out for its hillside monastery, postcard-perfect harbour and long stretches of beach.

Exotica Charters Announces Availability of New Yacht Charter Locations Due To a Wide Adoption and Innovative Use of This Technology
Exotica Charters is a premier yacht charter company owned by DMA Yachting, a renowned international yacht charter group, focusing on charters in exotic locations. New areas have become available due to total adoption and leveraging of a new technology.
United States - September 19, 2024 —
The availability of yacht charters was long dependent upon available marinas that allow for resupply after every charter. As the average size of a crewed charter vessel increased from 45 feet to 90+ feet, they could hold much more supplies. Nowadays, there are only 2 items that need to be restocked frequently - fresh produce and water. Since most charter locations burst with fresh fruit and fish, only water needed to be solved.
myBVIcharter is the leading US yacht charter company offering a robust fleet of catamarans and motor yachts in the British Virgin Islands. The classic weekly itinerary sees all the yachts depart on Saturday in a counterclockwise direction towards Virgin Gorda and Anegada, looping on Tortola on the way back, with the last leg from Jost Van Dyke.
Depending on the day, yachts used to move like the “Spanish Armada”. As yachts started to adopt the water maker, they suddenly had more options to start from almost anywhere, as guests could be picked up on a tender. This means that travelers can start their charter on day 3, staying ahead of the main fleet while on the same itinerary.
In Greece, the effect is twofold as explained by Mo, the Charter Guru at myGreekcharter . Firstly, there are new ways to discover classic locations. Since the first yachts started allowing Santorini pickup/dropoff, other yachts chose to follow suit. Santorini does not have a marina, and the pickup with a tender was a game changer. The amount of water needed for 15 people made daily stocking impractical and the yachts chose to start and finish in Athens.
Secondly, new charter areas in Greece have become available. As new yachts continued to arrive, the Athens’ marinas were full around 2022. The new yachts needed to find new marinas. A fundamental question - “why do we need a marina?”, led to yachts operating in areas previously not touched by the crewed yachts - Sporades and Dodecanese islands.
As Daniel, the owner of DMA Yachting, explains, ”We’re seeing first 3-4 crewed yachts permanently stationed in the Sporades and 8-10 yachts in the Dodecanese. Previously, you had to charter from Athens and ideally take a 2-week charter. This is no longer the case - you can start almost anywhere.”
The situation with the motor yacht Bahamas is similar. The previously Nassau-centric model, where all yachts started in Nassau and went for a weekly “milk run” charter to the Exumas, is challenged. “People don’t want to charter in the same spot twice”, explains Mo. “With 2,400 Cays, why not start in Eleuthera or even Long Island? And if the charterer wants to start in Staniel Cay, why get there from Nassau? Start the charter there!”
The water maker is not a new technology. It’s been around for a long time. It’s the innovative use, wide adoption, and necessity to spend less or no time in the marina that made the yachts offered by myBVIcharter behave differently.
According to Daniel, owner of the DMA Yachting group comprised of myBVIcharter, Exotic Charters, Bahamas Motor Yachts & myGreekcharter, the adoption of water makers skyrocketed from a humble 30% to a whopping 100% in the last five years.
Due to over-tourism and overcrowding in mainstream locations, people seeking intimate retreats are becoming increasingly more interested in exotic spots like Thailand, Raja Ampat, Galapagos or Antarctica. A water maker onboard is the key technological change that made these new locations feasible.
Exotica Charters , a yacht charter specialist in emerging and remote locations owned by DMA Yachting, has also observed increasing deployment of water makers in its fleet. “We’re suddenly able to create completely new itineraries, as we can do a route ABCD instead of A to A. You can get picked up in B and dropped off at C a week later. We’re seeing multiweek charters covering huge distances, especially in the Med: Sardina/Corsica, France to Italy to Malta, Ionian to Turkey in Greece.”
From Polynesia, South East Asia, to the “newly discovered” Greek islands such as Skopelos and Kalimnos, through innovative ways to discover known Caribbean islands such as Anegada or Jost Van Dyke, the water maker and human resourcefulness are leading the yacht charter market development.

Opinion | Why Netflix's Kaos Is The Perfect Primer On Today's Geopolitics
"You should have married me," the lover said ruefully.
"Then I'd be doing this with him." 'This' being a sweaty steamy rendezvous on a yacht.
It is this post-coital exchange, and not the in-your-face geopolitical references and scenarios, that establishes Kaos as one of the most incisive commentaries on contemporary global affairs. A present-day adaptation of several stories from Greek mythology, this new Netflix series is being binge-watched for all the obvious reasons. There's sex, politics, violence, and a whole lot of family drama. And it all involves the gods. It can be easily seen as the Greek mythology version of The Godfather or Succession or even the homegrown Mirzapur. What is missed, hiding in plain sight, are the insights on international relations, particularly the equations between the Global North and the Global South.
Minos, The King Of Crete
According to Thucydides, Minos, the king of Crete, was the first man to build a naval force, and he ruled through a 'divine' decree. He offered peace to neighbouring kingdoms like Athens in return for sacrificial virgins. When he died, he became a judge of the Underworld. In the show, Minos is one of the minions of the gods, under the direct command of Poseidon, the king of the seas. His existence and influence depend on doing the gods' bidding without asking questions or being bothered by attached moral dilemmas. Minos of Crete is also a coloniser.
Defying the mythological chronology, Minos is shown interrogating Andromache and Hecuba, the widows of the heroes of the Trojan War, Hector and his father, King Priam. He does not treat the fallen queens of Troy as equals. Though Trojans are technically the citizens of Crete, they do not have equal rights. His dealings with them are more deception than diplomacy.
When the empire writes back in the first episode, all hell breaks loose. The crackdown on Troytown-a refugee ghetto of Trojans-is reminiscent of all crackdowns against immigrants from the Global South across Europe and the US. Minos is not content with merely defeating Troy; he also wants to erase any sense of self-worth in its people, even two decades after the Trojan War. As most formerly colonised people understand, crushed economies can be rebuilt more easily than a crushed collective sense of the self.
Mighty, Cruel Gods
But the series is not about Minos. It is about Zeus and his family - the mighty, cruel, and self-serving gods and goddesses who treat their devotees and decriers alike - with ruthlessness and contempt. That's how absolute power behaves in every age and realm. Zeus, the most powerful of all gods, is also the most insecure of them all. His need for abject prostration from not just the mortals but also his fellow gods disallows any dialogue on the high table. There is no room for defiance.
As the most powerful entity in the Kaos universe, Zeus is capable of causing irreversible damage to people and places. With such power should have come responsibility. In an ideal world. Not in the world of Zeus. Nor in ours. The absolutism of Zeus's power is matched with the ineluctability of its misuse. The weaker his opponents, the greater his joy in crushing them. But his ruthlessness is not limited to his opponents. Twisting the neck of his bastard newborn only to satisfy his wife's whim is not too difficult for him.
The power relations in Kaos mimic the current geopolitical situation involving the G7 countries, the middle economies, the strategically positioned countries, and the damned pool of countries of the Global South. The middle economies, a la Minos, who depend on and thus recruited by the G7, are eager to unquestioningly help establish a world order that pushes everyone else to the margins. It still does not guarantee their survival.
The Underworld
Another interesting reading of contemporary geopolitics provided by Kaos is through the concept of renewal in the Underworld. Like powerful nations dangle the carrot of a better life for model citizens of the Global South, the gods have been using Renewal - reincarnation - to keep humans in line. Dissent, blasphemy, independence of thought and action in the world are all kept at bay through this fraud in the Underworld. Instead of getting renewed, the souls of dead human beings are harvested to reinforce the immortality of the gods. Just like the sweatshops in the Global South make the Global North richer and more powerful.
The Global North, like the family of Zeus, is driven by the principle of self-fulfilling prophecies. In the last episode, the Fates chuckle that prophecies exist and are potent only when they are believed. Zeus has created enemies, though powerless, among the mortals and immortals alike because of his obsession with rules-based order. His rules, his brand of order. Zeus's belief in his invincibility is paradoxically mirrored by his faith in the prophecy of his fall. Thus, the paranoia.
Zeus believes in the inevitability of evil. Just like his wife, Hera believes in the inevitability of her propensity for adultery. She prefers Poseidon over Zeus but is candid with the former: "Then I'd be doing this with him."
This awareness is the new global order.
