Wally Yachts

Based in Monaco, Wally has incorporated Italian design, innovation, and performance to create fantastic luxury sailing and power yachts. The company has a huge variety of new yachts from an 11 meter daysailer to 60-meter long sail and power yachts. In the ’90s, Wally specialized in sailboat design only but over time, Wally extended its reach into the power yacht segment.

Wally is known for its unique carbon fibre construction that makes their vessels extremely durable yet lightweight. A notable launch that utilizes this technique is the 50.5-meter sailing superyacht Better Place that hit the water in 2012. This sailing yacht is still the largest yacht that is built from carbon fibre composite in the world.

Wally shipyard, luxury custom yachts

Established with a focus on designing and building some of the world’s most innovative and performance-driven luxury sailing and motor yachts, Wally represents a very different Italian superyacht style. Wally was founded in 1994 by Italian businessman Luca Bassani, a lifelong sailor who entered the custom yacht-building field in 1991 with the design of a yacht for his family. Luca Bassani is known as a passionate yachtsman and a visionary entrepreneur.

Wally initially specialized in sailboat design, however, over the years the company extended its reach and began to also design state-of-the-art motor yachts. Wally is recognized worldwide for its innovative design and advanced carbon fiber construction techniques. In terms of specializations, Wally’s innovative designs undergo a stringent process from drawing board to CAD review, to detailed construction.

In 1994 Luca launched his 104.9-foot (32m) Luca Brenta-designed WALLYGATOR. Since then, the company’s line has ranged from the Nano 36-foot (11m) daysailer and racer, to sailing and motor yachts up to 197-feet (60m) in length.

As a company, Wally is based in Monaco. Since 2019, when the Ferretti Group announced an exclusive license agreement with the shipyard, all Wally yachts have been constructed at Ferretti Group yards, mostly at their facility in Ancona.

Wally have changed the entire concept of cruising yachts and built an iconic brand both in the yachting industry and in the luxury market.

History of Wally Yachts

In 1994 Wally was founded by Luca Bassani, as a shipyard that specializes in sail boat design. Over the past two decades, the company has been a pioneer in carbon fiber construction, having also introduced numerous production innovations to the process.

Wally combines the latest technology with contemporary design and its products go through an intensive and unique research and development program. Every Wally is the result of a combination of form and function, which means that every technical solution is developed with consideration for the overall aesthetic beauty. Every detail and every fitting is carefully analyzed and designed to contribute to the overall Wally appeal.

In 2004 and then in 2008, Wally became the only yachting brand to be a two-time winner of the Compasso d’oro, arguably the world’s most important award for quality and design.

In January 2019, at the Boot Düsseldorf Boat Show, the Ferretti Group announced that they had entered into an exclusive license agreement with Wally, representing a significant step towards the group’s full acquisition of the brand. The agreement also heralded the start of a four-year period of investment in Wally from the Ferretti Group, including an €84 million fund to be used for brand development and the design and construction of new yacht ranges.

Wally are constantly looking for ways to improve on-the-water enjoyment through performance, comfort, and style.

The Wally collection

The Wally collection ranges from the Nano 36-foot (11m) daysailer and racer, to sailing and motor yachts up to 197-feet (60m) in length.

Among Wally’s many world-renowned projects is the 118 WallyPower, a sleek and futuristic looking motor boat, which featured in the film ‘The Island’. The first 118 WallyPower was built in Italy and launched in August 2003, named GALEOCERDO. The futuristic lines, reminiscent of a stealth bomber, have won many awards and this unusual, dynamic-looking boat still generates huge discussion, turning heads wherever she goes. GALEOCERDO was also showcased in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art architecture and design exhibition in 2004/05 – the only yacht to be featured.

In 2012, Wally launched the 166-foot (50.5m) sailing superyacht BETTER PLACE. At the time, the worlds’ largest sloop built from carbon fiber composite, she was designed by Tripp Design with an interior by Wetzels Brown Partners. BETTER PLACE was Wally’s first diesel-electric sailing yacht and is powered via a standard shaft and feathering prop. With all three Caterpillar C7 gensets in operation, the yacht runs at 14.5 knots through a Siemens electric engine.

Today, Wally offers custom-built sailing yachts from 80-foot (24m), a power boat line which includes production boats ranging from 52 to 80 feet (15 to 24m), the Wallyace line of displacement semi-custom yachts, custom displacement motor yachts over 148 feet (45m), the Wally Class division of performance-orientated high-power racing yachts, and three models of Wally tender.

The Wally Class racing division also stages four regattas in the Mediterranean, featuring a successful formula where owners at the helm are assisted by the world’s greatest sailing talents from America’s Cup, Olympic, and VOR teams.

Wally Yachts For Sale

Headquartered in Monaco, Wally Yachts was founded in 1994 by visionary yacht designer and businessman, Luca Bassani, with the launch of the all-carbon ketch, “Nariida,” that featured innovations such as a hydraulic sail trimming system and submarine anchor; later versions also had carbon-fiber sails.

The name “Wally Yachts” was based on “Wallygator,” a cartoon character that Luca Bassani’s son liked as a youngster, and was the name of the first family boat, built a few years prior. Family yacht “Wallygator” was the first sailing yacht to have a carbon mast and an innovative deck layout that garnered the attention of the sailing world and led to the design and production of Wally sailing yachts with the excellent features of “Wallygator.”

Like most entrepreneurial yacht designers and builders of that era, Luca Bassani, an avid yachtsman himself, initially built only sailboats, until 2001 when he expanded into the powerboat segment with the first Wallytender 45 as a chase boat for the sailing yachts and then for the famed 118ft Wallypower after her launch in 2003 and debut in 2004. The 47ft Wallytender was built in 2005, one of which Bassani still owns today. Wally sailing yachts ranged from the 37ft Wallynano daysailer to the 166ft superyacht, “Better Place,” a carbon fiber sloop with flybridge. Wally Yachts was a pioneer of using carbon fiber in yacht construction. Besides the use of carbon fiber material for its benefits of lightweight, rigid strength and aesthetics, Wally Yachts innovations included push-button sailing in 1995, ‘Terrace on the Sea’ beach club and inside/outside living pioneered in 1998, the first canting keel in a big cruiser, and Magic Trim for sail handling along with other sail handling features, allowing single handling of sailing yachts.

The 1998 Wally 88 “Tiketitan” sailing yacht introduced the Magic Trim system that was developed by Gianni Cariboni (Cariboni Srl) with Wally, as an advanced hydraulic ram system to trim sails instead of winches using push-button controls; a few years later joystick integration was added. With the launch of Wally B in 1998, yacht interiors featured the “flexibility concept” of Wally Yachts collaboration with noted Italian design firm, Lazzarini Pickering Architetti, and the establishment of the Wally Class in 1999, allowing competitive owners to hold regattas of racing superyachts. Several of these cutting-edge yachts won prestigious design awards.

By far the most notable Wally motor yacht is the award-winning Wallypower 118, sometimes mistaken for a military stealth vessel for its radical futuristic design, technology, and speed, always turning heads in awestruck wonder. Launched in 2003, this amazing luxury, high performance superyacht was designed by Lazzarini Pickering Architetti in collaboration with Wally Yachts—both exterior and interior. Naval architecture was by Wally and Intermarine-Italy at that time a subsidiary of builder, Rodriquez Yachts. Rodriquez Cantieri Navali S.p.A. was merged by incorporation into its former subsidiary, Intermarine S.p.A. from December 31st, 2012. Both are known worldwide for the construction of commercial and military highspeed vessels, such as minesweepers, patrol boats, hydrofoils, and fast ferries (monohulls and catamarans) utilizing a variety of materials and technologies, and gas turbine engines with waterjets and diesels.

Luca Bassani has described Wallypower 118’s motion not so much in terms of actual speed (she is rated at maximum 60 knots), but the impact of the boat’s stunning shape and silence as she whizzes by. The metallic sage green (Wallygator) color changes in sunlight and reflects her environment—a golden sunlit coast, turquoise seas, gray rocks—like a chameleon. And there’s the angular black glass and carbon-framed superstructure adding to the mystique along with the knife blade thin, almost vertical bow and high deep chines that slice through waves and soften her ride, along with the use of interceptors for bow height control. Her quiet running is due to the triple Vericor TF50 gas turbines that each put out a whopping 5,600 bhp, with each driving a Rolls Royce KaMeWa Waterjet. 3

70 bhp diesel engines power the yacht out of harbors at a low 9kn speed and aid the two movable jets that steer the vast craft. Once in open water, the turbines take over. Exterior lines and open decks were kept pure and minimal, while providing the amenities and function of a cruising yacht; the 118 Wallypower was one of the first pleasure yachts in the world to have folding bulwarks. The interior living spaces have been likened to a sophisticated New York City loft; exquisitely simple, clean design with luxurious comfort. Even the navigational console is non-traditional, like an aircraft’s flight deck.

The 118 Wallypower is an incomparable technical and design masterpiece influencing marine design with its award-winning avant garde style, design concepts, and technical innovations, including the new 165 Wallypower designed by famed custom superyacht designer, Espen Oeino in collaboration with Luca Bassani, keeping distinctive Wally style and design features. The 118’s folding bulwarks are a standard feature of the new 58 Wallypower that increase the aft deck’s open outdoor space enhancing the indoor/outdoor, close to the water lifestyle concept.

The current Wally Fleet of power boats include the Wallytender 43 & 43X (X=outboard propulsion), Wallytender 48 & 48X—versatile, seaworthy dayboats with a more comfortable cockpit and Seakeeper for roll stability. The stylish walkaround center cockpit features carbon fiber sailcloth hardtop that can be installed with optional solar panels for battery power. Designed with a comfortable cabin for overnighting and balanced, and deep-V hull for speedy performance and maneuverability.

The Wallypower 50 & 50X are current projects. The Wallypower 58 & 58X were introduced in 2022 and 2023 respectively. The Wallypower 165 was revealed in 2019 and is in development, as the first project with Ferretti Group, who purchased Wally Yachts in 2019.

Another new project is the Wallywhy 100. The Wallywhy 200 launched in 2020, was the start of this new series, that includes a recently launched Wallywhy 150, and is described as a cross-over of semi-displacement, semi-flybridge, semi-explorer with a semi-loft interior. The models’ W is for wally and HY for hybrid, and the 200 refers to its 200GT volume. And volume is the concept of this yacht with a 23ft beam to its 89ft length, along with the excellent seakeeping of the Wally and Ferretti engineered hull. Joystick system and high-end Volvo Penta technologies make the Wallywhy Series easy to navigate whether crew or owner operated.

The Wally Fleet of sailboats include the Wallywind 110, 130, and 150 (projects). The Wallynano 37, a modern daysailer was updated in 2016 with a magnificent retro look designed by Dutch master Andre Hoek in collaboration with Luca Bassani, that combines timeless classic lines with the Dutch yard Doomernik’s advanced construction technology, design techniques, and sailing features. The minimalist teak interior finish is superb.

And Wallyrocket 52 is another new project.

About four dozen Wally Yachts are currently available on the brokerage market, with around three dozen power boats and one dozen sailing yachts. Power boats range from model years 2005 to 2023 and consist of Wallytender and Wallypower yachts, priced from under $350K to $3.2million. The Wally sailing yachts range from the Nano 37 daysailer to a Pendennis 106 and range from model years 1998 to 2009. Pricing ranges from under $300K to over $4.6million.

Wally’s wallypower58 Reviewed

  • By Phil Draper
  • August 18, 2023

wallypower 58

I don’t normally pay much attention to taglines, but Wally’s current one—“20 years ahead”—is an exception. Remember the WallyPower 118? It was Wally founder Luca Bassani’s personal vision of what superyachting could be. It launched 20 years ago but still looks like it’s only just dropped in from outer space. Then there are the various smaller wallypowers that have launched since, the new wallywhys that are phasing in now, and the various iterations of wallytenders, the first of which caused a stir more than 25 years ago. All carry the same futuristic design cues. And who would argue that the new wallypower58 doesn’t look like it’s 20 years ahead of the game too?

The wallypower58 has a distinct aesthetic with a square stem; a clean, hard-chined hull; and a sharp, mostly glass superstructure. The high foredeck has deck lighting and flush sun-pad inlays, and a cockpit Wally calls a semi-open salon. That last space has hardtop protection above as well as full side glazing to plug the gaps between the roof and deck. Overall, the hull volume allocates guest spaces roughly 50-50 inside and outside.

Tanks, engines and pods are beneath the cockpit sole, and there’s carbon-fiber detailing and teak decking everywhere. The decking is particularly impressive where it wraps over the after lip of the swim platform and where it lines the bulwarks. Their after sections fold down to add around 54 square feet of deck space. The whole open-deck area then provides something like 325 square feet of space.

wallypower 58

The star attraction aft is a 77-square-foot island sun bed with an awning stretched over a carbon-fiber frame that stows neatly around the base unit. Amidships beneath the coachroof, there’s around 6-foot-9-inch headroom and sofas down each side. The starboard one has a dining table that can be supplemented by free-standing chairs. The forward area beneath the one-piece curved and heavily back-raked windshield includes two high-backed carbon pilot seats to starboard that address a small-diameter horizontal wheel. They look like they could have been plucked from the starship Enterprise.

As with most open models, the accommodations closure is a sliding hatch inboard of the helm, which is nicely arranged with all the switches and instrumentation set into carbon-look moldings. Two Garmin displays dominate the console, where visibility is superb. An electric sunroof above the windshield provides natural ventilation when the air-conditioning is off.

The standard belowdecks arrangement includes a lower salon with two long sofas—one on either side, a head to starboard and a stall shower to port. Forward, there is a stateroom with an aft-facing double berth. The lockers and closets have a rather 1950s luggage look about them, a great contrast to the ultramodern vibe everywhere else.

wallypower 58

A smaller, double-berth stateroom with a door, or a single crew cabin with hatch access from the cockpit, are the options on the port side of the lower salon, which also includes a surprise: Instead of hullside windows, this model has what Wally calls magic portholes. Two 55-inch flat-screen TVs can relay real-time images from cameras in the vessel’s sides, or the TVs can relay recordings of the owner’s favorite bay when he’s tied up at the dock, or the TVs can play movies or games. This setup keeps the 58’s sleek hull lines pristine and is more efficient to build, as real windows require significant structures around the apertures as well as laminated glass.

There are two choices when it comes to propulsion: triple Volvo Penta D8-550/IPS700s or triple D8-600/IPS800s, which deliver reported maximum speeds of 35 to 36 knots and 37 to 38 knots, respectively. The boat I got aboard had the most-powerful, 470-cubic-inch, six-cylinder inline diesels, which, at a bit more than half load and in auto-trim mode with the Seakeeper 9 off, delivered virtually 38 knots at just over 2,900 rpm. Wallys always run every bit as well as they look, slicing efficiently and heeling into the turns just enough.

At an all-day, everyday 30 knots at 2,500 rpm, the ultimate range is around 350 nautical miles, much the same as it would be at 20 knots and 2,000 rpm, so there’s no real incentive to cruise halfheartedly with this machine. The onboard management system synchronizes the propulsion of all three pods while in ahead mode, so with only the usual twin control levers at the helm, the skipper drives the boat just like he would if the boat had a twin-engine installation. When maneuvering astern, those two levers only engage the outer engines.

wallypower 58

At the heart of a Wally build is style, performance, luxury and a bit of avant-garde thinking. It’s a formula that has made the brand a fan favorite, creating a niche that only it can own. And the wallypower58 owns it well.

The X Factor

The first Wally 58X version recently arrived in Florida. This iteration has quad 600 hp V-12 Mercury Verado outboards, which means a top-end speed of around 50 knots and a quoted fast-cruise range of 290 nautical miles. Normally, aboard an open yacht of this size with a quad rack, owners have to sacrifice some accessibility to the water aft, but fold-down quarter platforms are game-changers in that regard.

Wally’s parent company, the Ferretti Group, used the launch of the wallypower58 to say it will soon be one of the first yachtbuilders to offer Watchit anti-collision and grounding systems across its portfolio. Developed by Israeli company Aqua Marine Tech, these systems warn captains about navigational dangers. The tech’s artificial-intelligence technology interprets data from GPS, chart plotters, AIS, radar, sonar, proximity sensors and more.

Checkmate: On board the first Wallypower 80

In English, the word “wally” was long ago adopted as a noun to describe a fool or a simpleton. But you might not know that, in its adjectival form, “wally” also means fine, pleasing, splendid, robust and strong — all the things to look for in a boat, in other words.

So, in this case, it’s all about context. And, in the context of the superyacht world, a Wally is invariably something that’s pleasing and very often splendid, too. A Wally is also difficult to miss — a fact that quickly makes itself apparent as I tread the boardwalk of Monaco harbour surrounded by umpteen large and expensive vessels made from pale coloured GRP that, to the untrained eye, might all have emerged from the same production line.

But among them, standing out like a glittering black diamond in a sea of white plastic, sits the majestic Checkmate , the 24 metre carbon and glass high-speed motor yacht built by Wally in 2015 to the specifications of her owner, Oscar Marchetto, a 53-year-old Italian industrialist whose company makes and supplies most of the glass, steel and aluminium fittings used in the building of cruise ships.

His is the first Wallypower 80, the largest yacht built in the series since that most famous of boats, the 36 metre Wallypower 118 built for Wally Yachts founder Luca Bassani back in 2003. And here I am, the first journalist allowed to take a ride on Checkmate .

I am welcomed aboard by the boat’s captain, Filippo Barusco, who, when he’s not navigating Checkmate around the Mediterranean, also runs Venice4Sea, an RYA-affiliated instruction course for would-be skippers of both motor and sailing yachts.

Seconds after setting foot on the boat’s immaculate decking, I realise a Wally is not for the shy: every passer-by with a phone (i.e. every passer-by) is aiming his or her lens at Checkmate ’s stealthy form and reeling off Wally-in-the-background selfies as though she is the first superyacht they have ever seen — in a harbour full of them. “It gets worse when you’re out on the water,” warns Barusco. “Sometimes we get followed by helicopters, especially off Saint-Tropez.”

We spark up Checkmate ’s twin MAN diesel engines and gently inch our way out of port and into open water. We’re pursued, I can’t help noticing, by a clutch of small powerboats containing yet more amateur lensmen. As soon as conditions permit, a tweak of Checkmate ’s throttles induces a blood-curdling whine from the MAN engines and reduces our fleet of admirers to the size of distant toy boats.

The previous day, I’m told, the mistral had passed through the Côte d’Azur, leaving behind some chop. But, even with 3,600hp powering the Kamewa water jets to the point that Checkmate is slicing through the waves without effort and creating a veritable tsunami of spume, there is none of the buffeting that might be expected.

And it’s as we reach a delicious sweet spot in which Checkmate seems to be almost gliding over the waves close to maximum speed that I notice that the crystal clear sound of Haydn’s Cello Concerto No 1 is pouring from the Bang & Olufsen sound system, adding a pleasantly surreal element to the proceedings.

“Signor Marchetto is a huge music fan,” says Barusco. “We’ve got amplifiers in the bow and the stern. I’m told they put out 1,000 watts.” I’m not going to argue, not least because I am bracing myself for another demonstration of notable numbers — in this case, Checkmate ’s ability to haul down from 37 knots to zero in a mere 13 seconds, thanks again to her water jet propulsion system.

Considering Checkmate ’s 48.5 tonne displacement, such a trick is not only impressive, but remarkable — and could certainly be a life-saver in a man overboard situation. But that sort of drama is far from our minds as we drop anchor in a (surprisingly quiet) bay and settle down for lunch.

“Where shall we eat?” I ask. “Inside or out?” Before the question has really registered, I see that we are going to eat “inside out” as the crew begins to raise the stern deck on its invisible hinges to lower the substantial cockpit doors into a hidden hold, thus producing a remarkable and unexpected area of open air, loft style entertaining space capable of accommodating 20 in comfort.

“It was the owner’s idea to make it possible for the rear wall of the cockpit to completely disappear,” says Barusco. “He wanted a boat that felt really open and airy. But I’m told it was an absolute nightmare to get the system right.”

And the transformer yacht  touch doesn’t end with the disappearing doors because, with the flick of a switch, another section of teak on the bow opens up, rises skywards and, after a few seconds, settles into position as a dining table and a pair of benches.

Further surprise features of Checkmate include a huge “secret” locker in the bow for stowing her life raft, others at the edges of the deck for carrying dive bottles and flush-fit mooring winches that rise up on electric motors.

That such hi-tech trickery exists on board is hardly surprising, since Wally is constantly innovating under the leadership of Bassani. On Checkmate , everything from the LED deck lighting to the cameras trained on the key points of the engine room are controlled by iPad, the cabin mirrors morph into television screens and the bidets and lavatory pans are made from carbon fibre.

“I have a passion for building things and I’m very keen on anything technical,” Marchetto says. “For me, there was no other boat because I’ve always been fascinated by Luca Bassani’s designs and I really like the fact that a Wally always stands out in every superyacht marina . But it has been a very practical and usable boat too.

“My wife and two children have spent more than 50 days aboard Checkmate during the past year and we have done many trips between Sardinia and the Côte d’Azur, and around the Balearics .”

But Marchetto’s enthusiasm for building things has already caused him to contemplate Checkmate ’s replacement, and she is up for sale at a price of €6.5 million. “I know she’s a superb boat and she offers everything we need — but it’s rather like building a house. Once you have done it, you always decide you need more space.”

But there are not many homes that look like this, I consider as I step back on to the concrete in Port Hercules, past another gaggle of people snatching photos of themselves with Checkmate in the background. And it occurs to me that, for the first time, I might actually appear in a photo where I’m proud to be tagged #wally.

Wally’s New 50-Foot Yacht Can Dart Across the Seas at a Bonkers 50 Knots

wallypower50 and the wallypower50 X

Launched today at the Cannes Yachting Festival , the newcomer has the same clean lines and deep-V hull of its larger predecessors but can be fitted with the wraparound fender of the smaller tenders “for those seeking more practical applications.”

Practicality is also central to the yacht’s layout. The aft deck is equipped with two separate sunbeds instead of a giant central sun pad to further maximize the amount of space. The deck is also fitted with wings that can open out to create an additional 65 square feet of room.

That’s not the only spot for lounging, either. The upper cockpit sports plush seating for eight, plus a couple of forward-facing bench seats that can accommodate four more seafarers. Below, the generous open-plan living quarters include a double bed, a large couch, and a bathroom with a separate shower. As Wally puts it, it’s the “ultimate weekender pied-a-terre.”

The yard also says that a Wally isn’t a Wally if it doesn’t perform on the water. To that end, the wallypower50 is equipped with twin Volvo Penta IPS650s that give it a top speed of 36 knots and a range of 240 nautical. The more potent “X” variant packs quad 400 hp Mercury outboards that allow the yacht to hit an exhilarating 48 knots at full tilt and maintain the same range. Thrillseekers can also opt for a “Racing” configuration with 500 hp Mercurys that can push the vessel to speeds in excess of 50 knots, though its range does drop down to 180 nautical miles.

Perhaps the newcomer has filled a speed gap, too.

wallyace500 concept

"Bringing Wally’s characteristic good looks, generous use of glass and lifestyle design to the larger canvas of a superyacht for true enthusiasts of the cruising life."

wally 65 yacht

Fast planing hulls had always been a feature of Wally’s power yachts – until we designed the wallyace line. Drawing on the naval architecture expertise of the celebrated Laurent Giles, the wallyace500 is our first yacht to have a steel hull and aluminium superstructure for operations at displacement speeds. Maxing out at 16 knots, the yacht has an ocean-straddling range of 5,000nm at 12 knots. In other respects, the yacht is immediately identifiable as a Wally. It embodies the brand’s famous inside-outside lifestyle to perfection, with the sleek, minimal lines that are typical of all our boats. Glass features heavily in the exterior design, from bulwarks to the full-height windows which seem to support the upper and sun decks. Overhangs taper far back over the deck below. But this is no mere exercise in aesthetics. The open plan design of the interior guest spaces and owner’s cabin combines with the glass to bring natural light flooding in. Doors and windows open to connect interior and exterior. And the overhangs offer welcome shade for the 308sqm of open air living space, which serve for al fresco work-outs or simple lounging. A 75sqm beach club lies just 80cm above the water, so you can lie pieds-dans-l’eau. Or if that’s too sedentary, launch an e-foil, sailing dinghy or jetski – there’s plenty of carrying capacity aboard. The dedicated garage amidships is designed for a 7.0m tender.
