Video: 6 of the best heavy weather sailing videos
- Harriett Ferris
- June 18, 2017
Watch our pick of the most dramatic heavy weather videos
This first video of heavy weather sailing is our from our Storm Sailing Series with Skip Novak . It was probably the most ambitious project Yachting World has ever undertaken: to head for Cape Horn with high latitudes doyen Skip Novak to make a series on Storm Sailing Techniques . Here is one of our most popular videos, rounding Cape Horn in Storm Force 10 conditions…
Hallberg Rassy are known for being heavy, sturdy, seaworthy boats. This video shows Hallberg Rassy 48 Elysium in heavy weather off Cape Gris Nez, northern France in 2014. The yacht seems to be handling well, able to use a Raymarine lineair 7000 autopilot depsite the conditions.
This compilation is from the BT Global Challenge round the world race, a crewed race westabout the prevailing winds in one-design steel 72-footers. It took amateur crews upwind through the Southern Ocean from Cape Horn to New Zealand and from Australia to Cape Town. This footage shows some of the weather they experienced and what the crews endured – and watch out for some footage of the race leaders fighting it out under trysail during a severe storm in the Cook Strait in New Zealand.
Single-handed sailor Berthold Hinrichs sailing in Hinlopenstretet. It is the 150km long strait between Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet in Svalbard, Norway and can be difficult to pass because of pack ice.
A fun compilation video of sailing in strong breeze including 2 wipeouts, 1 dismasting and 1 guy going for a swim…
Our last example comes from popular YouTube channel Sailing SV Delos , as the crew tackle a 50-knot gale on the crossing to Madagascar. Skip to 8:00 for the stormy stuff:

The Best Sailing Videos on YouTube - Our Favourites!
You may not actually be sailing or boating right now but these videos and clips are sure to entertain your nautical side. As we said, this is our list, but if you think we’ve missed something special let us know and we’ll add it on!
Ready for some entertainment? One, two, three, here we go…
Incredible offshore sailing video from the Volvo Ocean Race
There is no doubt that the introduction of drones for onboard reporters in the last edition of the Volvo Ocean Race changed the viewing dynamic of the race forever. Suddenly you could follow the crews beyond the marina and spectator boats right out into the middle of the ocean.
Drones enabled us to capture never-before-seen aerial footage that moved audiences from spectators to feeling like members of the crew. To anyone who has ever flown a drone, we think you can appreciate the skill of flying from a boat on a heel like this, going that fast with that much water coming over the deck, onboard reporters we take our hat off to you.
Here we watch some of their most epic moments in what is, without doubt, one of the most impressive Sailing Videos we’ve ever come across on YouTube.
Impressive video of Vendee Globe Boats sailing around the Kerguelen Islands
With the incredible support of the French Navy and French television TF1, a team of two people spent forty days onboard a frigate helicopter carrier in order to shoot Vendee Globe boats rounding the Kerguelen Islands. Here we see this rare and epic sailing footage.
The best, most complete sailing app available. Cuts out the need to use lots of different apps. Incredibly easy to use. Modern navigational planning software as it should be. Not just a picture of a chart!!!
Keith Binley
Video of Alex Thompson performing the most amazing skywalk
This video combines two of our favourite water sports - sailing and kitesurfing.
What if you kite surfed behind the Hugo Boss Vendee Globe boat, attached yourself to a wire and hoisted yourself up to twice the height of your mast before ripping the cord and floating back down on your kite?
We think even the most adrenaline-fuelled individuals would take their hats off to this particular stunt…
This video of a couple living on a self-sufficient sailboat for 10 years
Follow this extraordinary couple who have been living aboard their boat for ten years, sailing 83,000 nautical miles. Using wind and solar panels this couple, and their baby, can be off-grid for months at a time.
Some people may also know them as SV Delos. The couple knew nothing about sailing before going on to live on their boat full time.
Take the full video tour of the boat that lets them live a sustainable life on the sea or, if planning your own trip, check out our essential boat packing list .
This footage of a drunk sailor being pulled off a reef in the Caribbean!
A list of sailing videos wouldn’t be complete without at least one boat fail video and this one is a good reminder to ensure you have the right safety equipment on board !
After a night sail back to Grenada in the Caribbean , Sailing SV Delos find a drunk sailor who’s run his sailboat up on a reef with all his sails out and engine on motoring even further onto the reef! Sounds too crazy to be true? Take a look at this…
Watch the guys from BoatUS cover the five outboard maintenance jobs most people forget
We’ve covered important considerations for maintaining your boat before. In this video, Yamaha technician Sean Stahl of Annapolis Boat Sales explains to BoatUS Magazine's Lenny Rudow five outboard maintenance jobs that people forget about.
These include replacing the fuel-water separator filter, checking the timing belt for wear, checking engine and bracket zincs, checking trim tab zincs, and removing the prop to look for a fishing line behind the thrust washer.
Awesome Video of Sailing a Superboat Crossing the Atlantic in Record Time
To quote “A Great Big Story,” - “Even the most daunting world records are meant to be broken.”
And it was no easy feat. On July 22, 2016, Comanche—a custom-built, 100-foot racing yacht—set sail from New York to the southern tip of England. Precisely five days, 14 hours, 21 minutes and 25 seconds later, the Comanche’s crew shattered the world record, by more than a day.
This video has it all; excellent helming , speed, resilience, teamwork, and the bravery to sail through bad weather.
Brave the high seas as we set sail on one of the most amazing and inspiring journeys ever to take place on film.”
Watch Sailing Nandji prepare their yacht for its first ocean crossing!
We love watching the guys as Sailing Nandji and we are well aware of the importance of proper preparation . In this video Bonita goes up the mast for the first time to take measurements for a new headsail, Yosh gets handy with some fiberglass work and the crew gets creative in the sail loft.

Sailing Ruby Rose follows the sailing couple, Nick and Terysa, as they sail all over the world aboard their sailboat, Ruby Rose and now Ruby Rose 2.
They’ve sailed everywhere from the Caribbean to the Canary Islands and have done quite a bit of chartering in Australia (Terysa’s home country).
Nick and Teresa sailed a Southerly 38 monohull for seven years before announcing in 2019 they would upgrade to a sailing catamaran.
HIGHLIGHTS: These meticulous content creators are known for their catamaran video review series, complete with a rating system, which they created to document the process of choosing their future sailboat.
The Ruby Rose crew recently moved aboard their new catamaran after three years in the build process.
Through a collaboration with Seawind, they tweaked the new 1370 model catamaran and have created the perfect liveaboard performance sailing catamaran for cruising.
Their channel covered the process in detail from start to finish, including the decision-making behind the design choices, changes, and upgrades.
We can’t wait to see all the places Ruby Rose 2 takes this sailing couple!
THIS CHANNEL IS FOR YOU IF: You want to learn more about buying a performance catamaran (particularly a Seawind). These guys also do a great job explaining how they balance performance with livability when choosing a sailboat.

On YouTube Since: Jan 9, 2014
On the YouTube channel Sailing Project Atticus , Desiree and Jordan share the highs and lows of their sailing lifestyle, capturing the beauty of the places they visit and the challenges of life at sea.
Their mission statement, “know your world,” encapsulates their deep-seated reasons for both traveling and sharing their remarkable experiences.
This young couple found each other while working on super yachts in 2012, and it didn’t take long for them to hatch a plan to save up and sail the world.
They purchased their first sailboat, Atticus, for a mere $5,000 in Florida. It was a 1963 Allied Seawind 30 and needed a lot of work.
Fueled by passion and determination, Desiree and Jordan spent three years meticulously refitting the boat, turning it into a floating home that would carry them on unforgettable adventures.
As they continued their sailing escapades, the couple found innovative ways to sustain their passion financially. Their newfound skills in boat maintenance and willingness to take on odd jobs along the way provided the means to fund their dream of circumnavigation.
HIGHLIGHTS: Recently, Sailing Project Atticus reached a significant milestone with an upgrade to their dream sailboat, Atticus II, a 1997 Pacific Seacraft 40. This new vessel provides room for the arrival of a new crew member—a beautiful addition to their journey!
As they sail with their baby aboard, the channel’s narrative has evolved, showcasing the joys and intricacies of raising a child while sailing the high seas.
THIS CHANNEL IS FOR YOU IF: You want to learn more about cruising on a minimal budget AND sailing with a baby onboard.

Subscribers: 120K+
On YouTube Since: Oct. 21, 2012
Matt and Amy on S/V Florence seized the opportunity to sail around the world when Matt received word his company’s office was closing in 2015.
Instead of waiting a decade or more to start their dream, this British couple decided to take the leap and begin their cruising adventure in just ten months!
Since then, they’ve sailed their tiny home, an Oyster Heritage 37, to the Cape Verde Islands, French Polynesia, Seychelles, and everywhere in between.
HIGHLIGHTS: In 2023, they completed a seven-year circumnavigation when they crossed the North Atlantic and currently show no signs of settling down as they plan a large refit for their boat before heading to the Arctic.
These sailors prove you can sail the world on a small, capable bluewater boat on a modest budget.
Sailing Yacht Florence showcases their sailing journey with thoughtful storytelling and beautiful cinematography that keeps their loyal YouTube viewers coming back for more.
THIS SAILING CHANNEL IS FOR YOU IF: You’re tired of waiting for the perfect opportunity to live your dream and need the inspiration take the leap and make it happen.
12. white spot pirates.
Subscribers: 93K+
On YouTube Since: Jun. 28, 2013
The only solo sailor on this list, German native Nike Steiger, bought her 33-foot fixer-upper aluminum sailboat in Panama and restored it into a formidable bluewater sailing vessel.
White Spot Pirates captures Nike’s voyages and the myriad experiences of life on the water as a lone sailor.
With a mere 2,000 nautical miles in her sailing experience upon acquiring her boat, this channel beautifully illustrates how determination and a thirst for learning can pave the way for remarkable achievements on the water.
HIGHLIGHTS: Accompanied by her faithful companion Boga, Nike has navigated the Caribbean, the South American coastline, Central America, and Mexico, transforming into a full-blown salty-sailing lady!
Her videos provide a vital lens into the hurdles and victories of a lone sailor’s journey.
- Nike is the creator of an award-winning documentary about her life-changing solo sailing journey called Untie the Lines .
- She also co-founded the non-profit organization In Mocean to raise awareness of ocean plastic pollution, specifically in remote coastal communities.
THIS CHANNEL IS FOR YOU IF: You aspire to embark on a solo sailing journey or enjoy immersing yourself in thrilling adventures on the water. This sailing channel is an incredible inspiration!
13. sailing nahoa.
Subscribers: 376K+
On YouTube Since: Jun. 13, 2012
Sailing Nahoa is a YouTube channel created by Canadians Ben and Ashley Stobbart who saved up and sold everything to travel the world in 2015.
Since then, they’ve added two little crew members, their kids Willa and Bodhi, and have completed a circumnavigation.
This sailing family has cruised all over the world on a 2005 Lagoon 410 catamaran.
From crossing the South Pacific and Indonesia to exploring Madagascar and, most recently, rounding the Cape of Good Hope, they’ve had some fantastic (and wild) experiences along the way.
Whether catching a giant tuna off their stern or fighting off pirates during the night, this crew doesn’t shy away from sharing the exciting and scary moments of living aboard.
HIGHLIGHTS: The Nahoa crew recently partnered with New Zealand designer de Villiers Design to build a custom aluminum catamaran perfect for high-latitude sailing.
This couple’s new endeavor to build a custom catamaran exemplifies their unyielding quest for new horizons, less boat maintenance, and high-latitude sailing possibilities.
Sailing Nahoa is a captivating testament to the power of wanderlust and the uncharted oceans that beckon us all.
THIS CHANNEL IS FOR YOU IF: You want to circumnavigate on a production catamaran (these guys are proof it can be done), or you’re curious to see what it’s like cruising full-time with two small kids.
14. sailing doodles.
Subscribers: 594K+
On YouTube Since: Oct. 4, 2016
Sailing Doodles is a YouTube channel and brand created by Texas native Bobby White.
Previously a private pilot, Bobby got a wake-up call when he suffered a stroke and could no longer perform his job. Determined to make the most of his circumstances, he chose to seize the moment and embrace a new chapter by purchasing a sailboat.
Sailing Doodles has had a constant rotation of guest crew over the years. And Bobby has become somewhat famous in the YouTube and sailing world for surrounding himself with beautiful women on board.
HIGHLIGHTS: Bobby has owned and sailed many boats over the years, including a motor yacht that he cleverly named “The Dark Side.” This channel features primarily coastal cruising in exotic locations such as the Caribbean and Mediterranean.
The channel is named for Bobby’s two Labradoodles, Maverick and Goose. Unfortunately, he lost these loyal sailing companions in 2020 and 2022, respectively. (I still hope Bobby decides to add a furry sailing crew back on this channel someday.)
THIS CHANNEL IS FOR YOU IF: You want a side of entertainment while watching sailing on YouTube. Don’t expect too many boat project tutorials on this channel!

Top 10 must-see superyacht drone videos
Abramovich yacht eclipse moors up in barcelona.
From aerial views of the famous Motor Yacht A and the late Steve Jobs' yacht Venus to dramatic footage of an explorer yacht on fire, these are our top ten must-see superyacht drone videos.
Situated at the heart of Barcelona, OneOcean Port Vell is a popular stop-off for some of the world’s largest superyachts and they don’t come much bigger than Eclipse .
This stunning video gives us a fresh perspective on the 162.5 metre Blohm+Voss yacht’s true scale, as she dwarfs her neighbours in the city centre marina. The close-up drone footage also reveals details of her aft deck, wing stations and helipads.
St David passing through the Corinth canal
It is often said that the journey is just as important as the destination and with a route like this it’s easy to see why. This dramatic superyacht drone video shows the 60 metre Benetti yacht St. David passing through the narrow Corinth canal that links the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea.
Styled by Andrew Winch Design and launched in 2008, St. David is available for charter with West Nautical, with prices starting at $266,000 per week.
Drone video of Motor Yacht A in Iceland
The word unique is bandied around in the superyacht sector, but if there is any yacht deserving of the description it is the undeniably one-of-a-kind Motor Yacht A built by Blohm+Voss . This must-see yacht drone video of Motor Yacht A gives an amazing view of the unusual lines of the 119 metre Philippe Starck -designed yacht as she’s anchored off Reykjavik.
It’s easy to look at Motor Yacht A from afar and question if she has enough outdoor living space, but this video gives an up-close view of her forward deck with a swimming pool tucked under the overhang and aft deck with another huge pool, covered deck spaces and two mezzanine style decks built into her lofty superstructure.
Drone video of 77m Silver Fast
Launched in 2015, Silver Fast is the 77 metre flagship of the Silver Yachts range, with a sculpted Espen Oeino exterior and foredeck helipad.
This video, shot off the coast of the French Riviera in May 2016, shows off her three shaded aft decks and extended beach club. Silver Fast is currently offered for sale with Burgess Yachts and BehneMar with an asking price of €79.5 million — making her one of the most expensive yachts listed for sale right now .
Gold superyacht Khalilah moored up in Miami
One of the most divisive yachts in the world , the 49 metre Khalilah by Palmer Johnson is immediately recognisable due to her metallic gold superstructure and she fits right in amid the glamorous surroundings of Miami Beach. This drone fly-by video, shot by brokerage firm Denison Yacht Sales , gives us a great view of her expansive exterior spaces, including the slide-out wingstations on the superyacht sundeck .
Drone video of explorer yacht Polar Bear on fire
Sometimes a must-see yacht drone video is more of the “can’t look away because it’s so horrific” variety. Cue this video of Citadel Yachts' Polar Bear , shot by police and destroyed by fire in June 2014. It was reported that welding work gone awry was the likely cause of the fire that destroyed the 31 metre yacht.
Huge plumes of smoke rise from the firey yacht as she smoulders away. You know it’s not going be a good ending for this poor explorer yacht, but like moths to a flame, the yacht fire video is transfixing to us viewers and made even more so when caught in aerial view by a drone, making this a real must-see video.
Drone video of ISA launching superyacht Forever One
A yacht launch is a happy occasion for a builder, and what better way to show a different perspective when splashing their latest yacht than by drone video?
This must-see video shows the 54 metre ISA yacht Forever One slipping backwards into the water in just 30 seconds. As we normally see a yacht launch in the form of static photos, this video puts the process into perspective and gives an appreciation for how fast these large yachts can actually be launched.
Drone video of Atmosphere and Twizzle in Liguria
If there was a catwalk for beautiful yachts, there is fair chance that these two would grace it. But instead of strutting their stuff on the ocean waves, Atmosphere and Twizzle are captured here enjoying some down time on the Italian Riviera at Santa Margherita in Liguria, mixing with their motorised cousins, albeit with an air of hauteur.
At first glance it is difficult to distinguish between the two beauties as they have the same distinguished navy blue hull and elegant, slender lines. Closer inspection reveals some subtle differences between the 53 metre Atmosphere , from Italian shipyard Perini Navi , and the slightly larger 57 metre Twizzle , a product of Dutch builder Royal Huisman .
What they have in common, though, is a sailing pedigree to light up the high seas and any harbour they care to make their port of call.
Drone video of Astra cruising in Guadeloupe
This stunning footage of the 55 metre Amels superyacht Astra comes courtesy of Imperial Yachts , which is currently offering Astra for charter . It takes quite an amazing destination to draw your attention away from such an impressive yacht but Guadeloupe manages it as the camera pans out to reveal a vast expanse of vivid turquoise.
Drone video of Azimut 84 yacht cruising in Miami
This drone video of the Phantom 3 fast yacht tender chasing an Azimut 84 might as well be an advertisement for a luxury yacht charter in Miami .
The Azimut 84, Ciao , departs the Miami superyacht marina of Grove Isle, heads into Biscayne Bay and past the iconic Vizcaya Mansion (1:08). The luxury yacht then heads under a causeway and out into open waters where she shows off what she can really do – this model can reach a top speed of 29 knots. She has some inviting amenities as well with a hot tub , bar and foredeck seating area.

Terrifying Video Captures Pod Of Whales Surrounding Solo Paddler Across Atlantic Ocean
The situation took a frightening turn when one of the whales bumped into his boat, causing him to drop the camera and pause filming briefly.
Tom Waddington found himself surrounded by long-finned pilot whales
An adventurer paddling solo across the Atlantic Ocean had an unexpected encounter with a massive pod of pilot whales, an experience that left him both exhilarated and alarmed.
Tom Waddington, on his journey from Newfoundland to England, found himself surrounded by long-finned pilot whales after a morning drizzle on July 7, as he shared on Instagram.
In a video, Waddington expressed his amazement: "This is so cool. A pod of whales is circling the boat and playing around it. I love it, but I'm worried they might hit my rudder. They're so close, see?"
He continued, "I can hear them blowing bubbles. Wow, that is so cool. What a special treat. I've seen many whales before, but they're just here to say hello."
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tom Waddington (@tomwaddington_skier)
When he resumed, his voice carried a note of concern. "I'm two hours in now with these thousands of whales," he said on camera. "One bumped the boat earlier, and I'm really scared they might hit it again. It's an incredible sight, but also very frightening."
According to the crew monitoring Waddington's journey from shore, the whales eventually swam away, allowing him to continue his paddle towards land, the New York Post reported.

Though Waddington emerged unscathed, the reality of sharing the ocean with such large creatures became starkly clear when one whale collided with his small boat. He later recounted the experience on social media, highlighting the shift from a serene wildlife encounter to a more daunting reality.
Experts suggest that the whales Waddington encountered were likely long-finned pilot whales, known for their social nature and tendency to travel in large groups. According to NPR, these whales often form tight-knit pods and are commonly found in the North Atlantic, as reported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Insane video shows huge great white shark bite boat: ‘he f—king smashed me’.
Footage has captured the wild moment a massive great white shark attacked a boat off the Sunshine Coast in Australia.
Jayden Grace was fishing at Mooloolaba off the Sunshine Coast on Sunday when the shark began circling his boat.
“That is huge,” Grace can be heard saying in the video.
The video shows the large shark circling the boat , while his friend is trying to reel in a fish from the other side of the boat.
After a minute or so of circling the boat, the great white shark turns its sights on the boat, trying to take a chunk out of the side.
“Woah! Woah! Woah! He just bit my boat!” Grace yells.
“I think it’s time to leave.”
Footage shows the moment the shark comes out of the water and attempts to bite into the boat, before turning and splashing its tail out of the water and swimming back into the sea.
“That’s what the great white did to my boat,” Grace said.
“Holy f—k, he f—king smashed me.”
Grace described the experience as unforgettable in a post to Facebook.
“Well that’s something I’ll never forget! By far the biggest shark I’ve seen in my life! Easy 5m great white shark has a little taste test of the renegade,” he wrote.

Italian Authorities Open Manslaughter Investigation in Yacht Disaster
A prosecutor involved in the inquiry into the sinking said it was “plausible” that crimes were committed during the accident.

Reporting from Termini Imerese, Sicily
Italian authorities said on Saturday that they had opened a manslaughter investigation into the sinking of the Bayesian luxury yacht, but that they had not yet zeroed in on any potential suspects.
The sleek, $40 million sailing boat went down fast in a storm off Sicily’s coast on Monday morning, killing Michael Lynch, a British tech billionaire; his teenage daughter, Hannah; four of his friends; and one member of the crew. The captain escaped on a lifeboat with 14 others.
On Saturday, Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor in charge of the case, said at a news conference that it was “plausible” crimes were committed during the accident.
“There could be responsibilities of the captain only,” he said. “There could be responsibilities of the whole crew. There could be responsibilities of the boat makers. Or there could be responsibilities of those who were in charge of surveilling the boat.”
Here is what the authorities said on Saturday:
It will be difficult to determine the cause of the sinking until the yacht is brought to the surface and inspected, which could take weeks.
Five bodies were found in the same cabin.
The yacht sank at an angle, with the stern — where the heavy engine is situated — having gone down first.
The captain and the crew, who have been holed up in a Sicilian hotel with other survivors, are allowed to leave Italy. But prosecutors said that they still want to ask them more questions.
The authorities did not perform alcohol or drug tests on the captain or the crew.
The authorities would not comment on whether hatches on the deck had been left open, which would have allowed water to pour in during the yacht’s sinking.
In addition to possible manslaughter charges, the authorities are also investigating the possibility of a negligently caused shipwreck, a crime that carries up to several years in prison upon conviction.
Investigators said they were focusing on why the 184-foot-long Bayesian, which was built in 2008, went down so quickly, especially when other yachts nearby weathered the storm.
Executives at the company that built the boat have said there is nothing faulty with the design of the yacht and have tried to shift the blame to the crew.
At the news conference on Saturday, the authorities were asked why the captain, James Cutfield, an experienced sailor, left the sinking boat while some passengers were still on board.
“The investigations are also focusing on this,” said Raffaele Cammarano, another prosecutor. But he added that the witnesses they had spoken to said that “the event was really, really sudden.”
Some people who were along the Sicilian coast at the time of the sinking described seeing waterspouts, which are vicious funnels of water and wind that sweep across a body of water during thunderstorms. But on Saturday, Italian authorities said they believed it was more likely that a downburst occurred at the time of the accident.
A downburst is a blast of powerful wind that comes surging down from the sky during thunderstorms. The Italian authorities said that extreme weather was “one of the main elements” of their investigation, but added that they were still at the early stages of their inquiry and that they did not want to “play the probability game.”
The rescuers found the bodies of five passengers in one cabin, which was on the left side of yacht. The yacht was found lying on its right side at the bottom of a bay, in about 160 feet of water. The authorities said the passengers who died were most likely trying to flee to the higher side of the boat and were probably sleeping when the accident happened.
The authorities said that they were not certain whether a black box existed and that the hull was still being searched.
Mr. Cartosio would not comment directly on the actions of the crew, but said that it would be “even more painful” if “the sinking was caused by behaviors that were not perfectly in order with the responsibilities that each person must have in the management of navigation.”
But he added that “this is just, in fact, the beginning of an inquiry.”
