Memories   Visit of Cangarda (Magedoma) Brockville, Ontario June 4 - 7, 2011

Some Images of a Good Time

In early June 2011, the Cangarda (Magedoma) formerly owned by the Fulford family of Brockville visited the Brockville Harbour for a four day visit.

At Blockhouse Island on Saturday afternoon, a steady crowd boarded, or came to admire, the 110-year-old Cangarda luxury yacht, more commonly known to locals as the old Magedoma.

The magnificent 126-foot ship was once owned by Brockville senator and business magnate George T. Fulford and temporarily "came back home" for an extended weekend of public display to benefit Fulford Place Museum.

"The owner promised some day, he'd bring it here," said Martha Sadler, a Fulford Place volunteer.

The current owner, Dr. Robert McNeil of Mann, California, carried out a 12 million dollar restoration to the vessel to bring it back to its former glory.

BROKER'S COMMENTS

CANGARDA may be unique: an obviously gorgeous, fully functioning Edwardian era private pleasure steam yacht of significant size and undoubted provenance. Her rebuild and restoration led by Bob McNeil and executed by Jeffrey Rutherford, completed in 2009, was painstaking in its combination of authenticity with practicality and capability. Apart from all those superlatives, CANGARDA is an easily and economically driven steam yacht, powered by her original steam engine and its associated auxiliaries. That so much of her original carpentry could be re-used in the entirely faithfully rebuilt hull ensures that 21st Century owners can very comfortably, safely and practically live and cruise in this most amazing and admired, beautiful time machine.

RESTORER’S COMMENTS

“Sometimes it is not that people find boats but rather that the boat finds an owner. Most of this is not particularly rational. All the above applies here. Originally shown as a proposed project in the summer of 2002, it was not until the Herreshoff Rendezvous of that year that the “bug” bit. For some reason the idea of restoring CANGARDA really sunk in.” Robert G. McNeil, 2006

REBUILD/ RESTORATION

The rebuild and restoration of CANGARDA was informed by two principal sources of information, and, as in all the best such undertakings, a clear and ambitious vision for how the vessel would be used post restoration, including open sea passage making. The sources were: 1. The existing Pusey & Jones plans preserved at the Hagley Museum, Wilmington, Delaware These records are very fragmentary, containing many small scale plans. Scans of these drawings formed the basis for new drawings prepared by Andrew Davis’s Tri-Coastal Marine to satisfy Coast Guard and ABS requirements. 2. The plethora of photographs from the Fulford Museum, Brockville, Canada And pictures taken and provided by earlier owner/ restorer/ preserver Richard Reedley, and others. Significant effort was made to keep the restored CANGARDA like original by using every part from the original vessel found in storage while mindful of the open sea requirement and subject to all the elements that implies. To make the vessel safely operable, while the steam engines and many of the original valves, sight gages and pressure sensors were restored for re-use, a new oil (rather than coal) fired boiler was constructed, and the operation is automated so that no human is required to be constantly in the engine room during operations. Other than this, the design and outfitting of the engine room is as close to the original as possible. The original electric panel and gauges were installed. The engine room telegraph system and the steam anchor windlass – and the anchor itself - are the originals. Much of the vessel’s original woodwork and fittings, having been carefully stored under earlier ownerships could be re-used, involving often a fascinating process something akin to assembling a complicated jigsaw puzzle without the box’s cover picture. The project’s key carpenter was able to find panels that fitted the exact structure of the cabins, even to the extent he was able to show how one tree was used in sequential pieces placed in the after cabin. Studiously determining how each piece, a panel or a small part of the mouldings, was utilized has added to the authenticity of the restoration. The accommodations were constructed in the original configuration. Sinks in the cabins as well as the water valves are original. Lock sets, hinges, pin rails, handrail parts, bulwarks, bunk faces and drawers and a long list of other items are all original. Of course there are always compromises in such work – for example, CANGARDA has full modern navigational and communication aids (all of which can be concealed when she is dockside). However, if Charles Canfield or George Fulford walked the decks they would not see many apparent changes to the vessel they enjoyed so much.

CANGARDA was originally built in 1901 by Pusey and Jones of Wilmington, Delaware (in the amazing time of five months or less) for Michigan ‘lumber baron’ Charles Canfield - named as a combination of his last name, and that of his wife, Belle Gardner. After a short first ownership, CANGARDA was sold to George Fulford of Brockfield, Ontario, a wealthy businessman and member of the Senate of Canada. The Fulfords renamed the boat MAGEDOMA, a combination of syllables from the names of his wife and children (MAry, GEorge, DOrothy, MArtha). The boat was docked at Fulford Place, the Fulfords’ mansion nestled on the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Brockville, Ontario. The house exists today as the Fulford Museum. Even though George Fulford was killed in an automobile accident in 1905 (the first Canadian to die by such a means) the family cruised MAGEDOMA for twenty years in the Thousand Island area of Lake Ontario. She was a well-known and majestic yacht in these waters. In 1927, Mary Fulford hosted on board the then Prince of Wales, his brother Prince George (later Duke of Kent), and the prime ministers of Britain and Canada, Stanley Baldwin and William Lyon Mackenzie King respectively. At the time of World War II the Fulfords donated the vessel to the Canadian Navy. In 1951 MAGEDOMA was sold to Cameron Peck, who used the vessel until 1954 when she was sold to Frederick Smith. It was Smith who restored the original name of the vessel, CANGARDA. In 1983 CANGARDA was sold to Richard Reedley, who began a major restoration. She was disassembled, the engines sent to England for restoration, and the wood panelling including all the parts put in storage. Unfortunately, after making repairs to the hull, Mr. Reedley was unable to complete the restoration. The hull was placed back in the water and left for some ten years after which time she sank in 1999. A rescue was undertaken by Elizabeth Meyer of J Class Management and the hull then lay on the hard at Fairhaven, Massachusetts with the engine and woodwork in store. This was CANGARDA’s status in 2002 when she found her eventual saviour, the late Bob McNeil. The rebuild/ restoration detailed above by Rutherford’s Boat Shop, Richmond, California, began in 2004 and was completed in 2009.

Magedoma hockey history

The Brockville Magedoma hockey club (named after the  Fulford' family yacht ) was formed in 1904 by Senator George Fulford and was sponsored for next 50 years by both he and George T Fulford.

The Magedomas started as an intermediate, then a senior hockey team in  Brockville ,  Ontario .

In 1929 , as a team in the intermediate  Rideau Group  in the  Ottawa District Hockey Association . The Magedomas won the league playoff title in every season they played in.

In 1934 , hoping to find more competition, the Magedomas joined the  Ontario Hockey Association 's Senior B series. They won that title and then lost out in the  1933-34 Eastern Canada Allan Cup Playoffs.  The next season they played in the  Ottawa City Senior League  where they again won the playoff title.  In 1935-36 they were finalists in the Eastern Canada Allan Cup, coached by Jesse Spring and Trainor Frank Reynolds.   That would be their last season.

The Brockville Magedoma name was revived on the hockey scene in the early fifties.  From 1951 to 1954 , the Brockville Magedomas senior amateur hockey team joined the New York - Ontario Hockey League.  The Magedomas won the league championship in all 3 seasons that they competed in the NYOHL.

In 1954 and 1955 , the Magedomas moved to the Eastern Ontario Senior Hockey League (EOSHL) and remained “the most prominent sports team in th e town”.

The latest iteration of Magedoma hockey is Brockville's Magedoma Old Timers Hockey , playing out of the Brockville Memorial Center  since 2008.  The Magedoma's hockey heritage continues as an organization providing recreational hockey for participants aged 55 and up in an atmosphere of sportsmanship and fellowship; blending players with varying abilities and ages.

We are proud to boast that we have active members from 55-84 years old and have had our share of success at regional and provincial tournaments ! We are definitely more than just Brockville's senior shinny hockey group, we are truly a men’s club providing a venue for the social atmosphere we all crave, creating long lasting friendships, and of course, great recreational hockey.

History of the Magedoma

What's in a name you ask??  Well, the Magedoma name has a long and treasured history.  T he Magedoma, originally named the Cangarda, was built in 1901 by ship-builders Pusey & Jones in Delaware.  Originally owned by Charles Canfield, the Cangarda was sold to George T. Fulford in 1904, when he changed the name to the Magedoma, a name made by combining the first two letters of his family’s first names: MA for his wife Mary, GE for his son George II, DO for his eldest daughter Dorothy, and MA for his middle child Martha.

The Magedoma remained in the Fulford family until 1941 when it was donated by the family to the war effort as a training vessel under the name HMCS Cataraqui. After the war, the yacht was renamed Cangarda and changed hands a number of times. In 1999 the Cangarda was half-sunk in the Boston Harbour for a year and a half.  In 2003 a prominent California-based yachtsman purchased the ship and underwent extensive restorations for five years, eventually being relaunched in 2008.

Click here to learn more about the name, the yacht and it's history and if you're visiting Brockville this summer, be sure to visit  Fulford Place  and walk the same halls as royalty. Get a rare glimpse of the luxurious lifestyle of another era and discover the story of Senator George T. Fulford who once owned the historic vessel.  There is also a model of the Magedoma yacht on display!

Exiled russian oligarch’s 257’ superyacht amaryllis seen towed through palm beach.

The Amaryllis being towed past the former mansion of Henry Flagler, built in 1902

By John Jannarone and Alan Hatfield

The 257’ superyacht Amaryllis apparently owned by exiled Russian oligarch Andrey Borodin was towed past Palm Beach, FL on Friday morning, according to a visual account by CorpGov .

The yacht, whose owner is frequently cited as Mr. Borodin by enthusiast publications, moved slowly through the Lake Worth lagoon where bridges were raised for its passage. A towboat with flashing lights about 150 feet ahead pulled the Amaryllis , built by German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen in 2011.

While CorpGov could not officially confirm Mr. Borodin as the owner of the vessel, his wife, socialite Tatiana Korsakova, has posted dozens of Instagram photos and videos aboard the Amaryllis. A yacht broker interviewed by CorpGov confirmed that Ms. Korsakova is indeed aboard the Amaryllis in the photos and videos.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tatiana Korsakova (@tati_vk)

The sighting comes as billions of dollars in Russian-owned yachts have been seized around the world as a result of international sanctions. CNN has published an extensive list of seized vessels, which were taken in harbor cities including Mallorca, Spain and London.

However, it is unclear if the Amaryllis was being seized or voluntarily towed. Very large yachts often choose to be towed because bridges are required to raise for them, according to the yacht broker.

The former Bank of Moscow chief was granted political asylum in the UK in February 2013 after fleeing what he alleged to be politically-motivated fraud and embezzlement charges. Mr. Borodin would go on to be tried and convicted in abstentia in Russian Court in 2018, but not before managing to enlist a number of prominent American lawmakers to lobby Washington for a U.S. visa. Despite Russian extradition requests to the UK government, Borodin’s controversial attempts to make large donations to the NHS, and the uncovering of an assassination plot against his life, the fugitive banker remains overseas, having been granted access to his Swiss bank accounts and having made several notable London real estate purchases during his time in exile.

Mr. Borodin is widely listed as a billionaire, but his total wealth remains difficult to confirm accurately, with the governments of Switzerland and the Bahamas having been asked to help the Russian government in its legal case. In 2012, Borodin purchased the UK’s then-most expensive home, an 80-hectare 18th-century estate in Oxfordshire, for upwards of $217 million. In 2017 he was granted access to personal Swiss accounts holding a reported $378 million. The Amaryllis was purchased for a reported $120 million.

Mr. Borodin did not immediately respond to an emailed query from CorpGov , while the FBI declined to comment. An emailed query to The Department of Homeland Security was not returned.

Charlie and The Magedoma… Romance and Tragedy on the River

Kim Lunman captured all of the elegance and magic of bygone age in her May 2010 article , but there is a mostly untold story of romance and tragedy that also features Senator George Taylor Fulf0rd’s 126’  steam yacht, The Magedoma .

magedoma yacht

In 1988, Senator Fulford’s great-grandson, Scott Disher was interviewed on the radio in Montreal. His grand-father George Taylor Fulford had just died and Scott was asked about the connection between the fabulous Fulford Place at Brockville and magnificent Mull Hall (now Stewart Hall, the civic centre of Pointe Claire on the west island of Montreal).

Scott told the story on CBC’s ‘Daybreak’ of how the ‘poor boy, Charlie Maclean from Pointe Ste. Charles’ met and married Martha, the Fulford heiress and inherited the millions.”

magedoma yacht

Now Charlie Maclean wasn’t just a boy from a modest background. His father David and mother Mary were Scots protestants who had emigrated from Ireland. Montreal was always a good home to the Scots, even before Wolfe took Quebec!

Charlie was a ‘wet bob’ too! As a young boy he’d excelled at swimming and paddling, and at 16 he was a member of the old Grand Trunk Boating Club’s water polo team when it travelled down to defeat the New York Athletic club.  At age 24, he won the Dominion single blade championship at Ottawa in 1900, before their Majesties’ King George V and Queen Mary and won the swimming title as well.  He was also captain of the winning Grand Trunk War canoe team in the half mile defeating fifteen other teams including the redoubtable Britannia and Ottawa teams. He went on to win both titles again against the Americans at the Pan American exhibition in Buffalo.

magedoma yacht

Charlie captained his Club's war canoe when for four years in succession it won the mile race of the Canadian Canoe Association (1902-05).  He was one of Canada’s outstanding athletes on the water at the turn of the century. From the 1900 photo, he was good looking and a bit of hunk too!

Charlie is said to have been rowing on the river when he caught the eye of Martha Fulford, relaxing, taking tea on the stern of her father’s magnificent 126’ steam yacht, The Magedoma on its way to Lake Champlain. It was love at first sight.  They were married July 28th, 1908 on the Magedoma , docked in the Port of Montreal, and because Sen. Fulford had been killed in a motor accident, Martha was given away by an old family friend, Sir Wilfrid Laurier. (Canada’s Prime Minister  1896 - 1911).  The beautiful sterling silver barometre and clock was a wedding gift and is inscribed to Mr. & Mrs. C.W. Maclean from ‘Magedoma’s Crew’. It must have been a large, well paid crew as it is a very impressive wedding present.

magedoma yacht

Martha wrote a letter home to her mother while on her honeymoon, saying “Charlie was the kindest and most considerate man she had ever met”. She went on to say that he looked after her so well and she only hoped she could be half as good to him.

Poor Martha was married once before she married Charlie. Her first husband was George Sherrif and he was her childhood sweetheart. She had to wait until her older sister Dorothy married before she was allowed to marry him in 1906 but George was ill with cancer and died 2 months after they were married.

Martha’s marriage to Charlie was tragic too. Sadly, Martha developed appendicitis during her pregnancy and died shortly after giving birth to their son in 1910. Martha’s fortune passed to their newborn son, who survived some forty-eight hours and then died intestate, and the Fulford millions belonged to ‘poor boy’ Charlie Maclean.

The grieving widower, Charlie remained at Fulford Place in Brockville, eventually becoming mayor in 1913.  During his time, he was determined to try and prevent a similar tragedy and last year, Brockville General Hospital celebrated 125 years of service to the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. As part of the celebration,  research shows the creation of the maternity ward, endowed by Charles MacLean in August of 1912. The donation was given in memory of his first wife, Martha (Mattie) Fulford.

magedoma yacht

The maternity ward construction cost $9,163.67, and its furnishing $831.48. The furnishings were provided by the Brockville General Ladies Auxiliary, who for the first time overrode the decision of the Board of Governors about where to spend the auxiliary’s profits for the year. The Board said “no” to furnishing the new maternity ward, but the ladies did it anyway and changed their bylaws to reflect that decision. The completed ward was officially opened August 17 th , 1912 as the MacLean Memorial Ward, a fitting tribute to the “1st” Mrs. C.W. Maclean.

Soon after he completed his term as mayor, Charlie left Fulford Place and returned to Montreal where he set himself up in business and set about building his own palatial home. According to Scott’s slightly “waspish account” (my aunt Meriel went to Compton with his mother and was his god-mother), Charlie was determined to build a mansion to rival Fulford Place, and hide his modest origins.

If that was even close to the truth, Charlie certainly succeeded. He bought the Knoll, which was owned by the Allen family (Allen Steamship Line) and developed a large farming estate on the edge of Pointe Claire. He commissioned the new home, “Mull Hall,” and when complete in 1916 with its 35 rooms, it was a more spacious, less ornamented version of Fulford Place. It was referred to as ‘Chateau Maclean‘  by the locals! Charlie’s nearby model dairy with electric lights, music to soothe the cows, and tiles (for ease of cleanliness) cost over $100,000.

magedoma yacht

In 1914, Charlie was gazetted a major in the 13th Scottish Light Dragoons (a Canadian reserve) and met my feisty grandmother, Doris Thornton Aldous before departing for active service in France. He came home in January 1916 and was promoted to Lt. Colonel, to organize and command the 207th Ottawa-Carleton Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force; popularly known as ‘Maclean’s Athletes,’ and returned to war.

Doris was not about to let the handsome and wealthy widower escape, and applied for a commission herself and as an Hon. Lieutenant, Canadian Field Comforts, travelled from Winnipeg across Canada on her military travel warrant, to board a ship in Halifax. They were married in St. James’ Church in Piccadilly, London on December 20th, 1917. My uncle Ian was  born in England as the war continued.

When they came home, Mull Hall was ready for them, though when Doris became pregnant with my mother, Morna, she decided to take a suite of rooms at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, with a doctor and staff, and my mother was born in the Ritz in March 1920.

The Fulford and Maclean families remained friends, visiting each other's mansions right up until World War II and there are photos of them together in 1942, all the men on leave in uniform.

magedoma yacht

The Colonel, as he came to be known, died in 1951, aged 75; the year I was born, so I carry on his name and some of the magic of the Magedoma (and its silver chronograph which sits on my desk).

By Charles Maclean Cochand

Chas Cochand was born in Montreal and raised in the Laurentians at his family's ski resort Chalet Cochand. At 14 he went off to school in Switzerland but returned to the University of Western Ontario in London, ON for a degree in English & History. He attended the Inns of Court School of Law, London UK,  and was called to the Bar by Middle Temple in 1978 and has been practicing criminal law in England ever since. He lives with his wife Judy and three adult sons in the New Forest, Hampshire U.K., but comes home every summer for a month at Judy's family cottage on Lake Simcoe.
