Tanto vale l’imbarcazione riconducibile all’imprenditore russo Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko sottoposta da ieri sera a provvedimento di ”congelamento amministrativo” nel porto di Trieste. 143 metri di lunghezza per 25 di larghezza il “Sailing Yacht A” è lo yacht a vela più grande al mondo e fra quelli più costosi mai realizzati. I numeri dello yacht

Lo yacht si trova in manutenzione nel porto di Trieste, e più precisamente all’Arsenale San Marco di Fincantieri. Costruito nei cantieri di Nobiskrug, in Germania, il panfilo ha un albero maestro di 90 metri e la parte emersa alta come un palazzo di 8 piani. Il Sy A è stato "congelato" nel porto di Trieste dal Nucleo Speciale Polizia Valutaria, con la collaborazione del Nucleo Pef e del Roan del capoluogo friulano.

September 22, 2023 - Trieste, Italy -  The next event of the  2023 Melges 24 European Sailing Series  takes place this weekend in Trieste, Italy.  La Settimana Velica Internazionale 2023 , including Melges 24 Adriaco Cup 2023 and Italian Melges 24 Tour ACT 4, is event number 10 in the renewed ranking-based series, where the events around Europe will be counted in the ranking. There are 19 entries from 6 nations on the entry list, including the current ranking leader –  Miles Quinton ’s  Gill Race Team  (GBR) with  Geoff Carveth  at the helm.

The host club  Yacht Club Adriaco  is located in the beautiful city centre of Trieste ­– being the oldest yacht club on the Adriatic and overlooking the city of Bora for more than a century, it’s a point of reference for the city’s sailing community. For the Melges 24 international fleet, it is the first time to experience the hospitality of the Yacht Club Adriaco.

Nicolò de Manzini,  President of the Yacht Club Adriaco is happy to welcome Melges 24 class:  “Yacht Club Adriaco and Trieste are proud to host the Melges 24 European Sailing Series regatta. The Melges 24 Class is simply a legend, and we, as the organizers, are very happy to be also a “little” part of this great and successful story now. Welcome to all the Melges 24 teams and have a great sailing in Trieste!"

Michael Tarabochia , the owner of  White Room  (GER) and Member Europe of the  International Melges 24 Class Executive Committee , can’t praise the club enough after being there for a few hours only when arriving on Thursday afternoon.  “Since arriving here we feel ourselves so very welcomed – the organizers are very friendly and helpful. The location of the club is just in the heart of Trieste city, well known as the city of the Barcolana. Even though it is close to the end of the season, it’s especially great to see a great fleet competing, most of them from Trieste area, but also from Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Great Britain, and Germany. It will be a great weekend of sailing on our beloved Melges 24!”

Three out of the Top 10 teams from the current ranking of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series (ESS) are present in Trieste. Above mentioned  Gill Race Team  (GBR) of  Miles Quinton , who has been winning the ESS overall champion title twice and the Corinthian trophy once, has travelled the most having sailed at five events so far this season. 2022 Melges 24 ESS Corinthian winner and runner-up in the overall ranking,  Chinook  (HUN) of  Akos Csolto , is holding runner-up placing also now with just a 0.5-point gap separating from the leader. These teams are holding the preliminary overall and Corinthian ranking top two positions. A third team from the ESS Top 10 present in Trieste is 2021 Melges 24 ESS Corinthian winner  Michael Tarabochia ’s  White Room  with  Luis Tarabochia  at the helm, currently sitting in the sixth position overall. 

However, competition in Trieste will be tough with a few other well-known teams taking part. Reigning Melges 24 European Champion  Strambapapà , owned and helmed by former Italian Olympian  Michele Paoletti , crewing with his wife  Giovanna Micol , also a former Olympian, will be sailing in their home waters. 2022 Melges 24 European Corinthian Bronze,  AleAli Eurocart  of  Barbara Bomben  with  Gianfranco Noe  helming, is ready to fight for the top positions – this team was also the winner of the J/70 Corinthian World Cup’s first edition in history, held in July 2023.

Registration and equipment inspection were made on Thursday 21 September, with a series of eight races to be sailed from 22-24 September.

Please note that  the venues of the Croatian events in October  have been swopped, giving the host of the  2024 Melges 24 Europeans  –  Sailing Club Split  – a chance to host the event of the European Series.

Croatian Melges 24 Class, as the co-organiser of the three last events of the European series,  will organise free outdoor storage  for the boats between the October regattas and the Croatian Championship in November.

Megayacht A, the “ugliest boat in the world,” has already cost Italy 18 million euros, will still cost a lot of money, and the state cannot dispose of it.

Two years ago the seizure of the megayacht A

Megayacht A, which is in fact the world’s largest sailboat (although some people refuse to call it a “sailboat”) had been seized from Russian tycoon Andrei Melnichenko on the night of March 11-12, 2022 while in Trieste, exactly two years ago.

The seizure had been put in place by the Finance Guard in execution of sanctions decided by the European Union against Russian oligarchs after the outbreak of war between Russia and Ukraine. But the operation was a bloodbath for the coffers of the Italian state, which had to, by law, shoulder the maintenance costs and, as we will explain, cannot get rid of the boat (for now).

The ugliest boat in the world?

When it was launched in 2015, the mega yacht A had sparked a plethora of outrage from sailing purists and sea lovers . Three masts, 143 meters long, 25 meters wide, 12,600 tons in tonnage, and a height equal to an 8-story building. All metallic, boundless, armored. Some had gone so far as to call it a “ monster ,” as in a disfigurement not only to classic yacht aesthetic standards, but also to current ecological and energy emergencies, not only of sea-going people.

Today that mega-sailing yacht designed by archistar Philippe Starck is at the center of controversy less related to personal taste and touching us “in the pockets.”

How much does the megayacht cost us A

It has been exactly two years now that A has been moored in the Gulf of Trieste. The daily cost of maintaining the mega yacht is estimated to be between 20,000 and 30,000: multiply that by two years, that’s about 18 million. And the cost is bound to rise, with the end of Russian-Ukrainian tensions to date far away.

In fact, the Italian state must pay for the 20-man crew that looks after the boat, which under custody cannot deteriorate. You also have to do the cleaning and maintenance to all the systems that allow the mega yacht to operate and power its super generator that stays on day and night.

Will the state ever recover this money?

But this money who will give it back to us. Certainly not Melnichenko , one of the richest men in the world with an estimated wealth of 27.5 billion, mainly related to coal and fertilizer.

Italian institutions long ago received a notice saying the yacht does not belong to Melnichenko, but to a trust managed by an independent trustee with whom the oligarch denies having any relationship. The dispute resulted in a legal battle between the state and the ownership of the megabark, represented by major law firms.

Italian law stipulates that in the event that the seizure does not become final and the owning company wants to get the yacht back, it would first have to pay all the maintenance fees and until it does so, based on the right of retention that any shipyard has with respect to the assets it guards, it cannot get the yacht back. We shall – for quite a while yet – see.

Maxi yacht rolex cup: trionfo di leopard 3 nel primo maxi 1 world championship.

Vento tra i 16 e i 24 nodi, sole e tanto entusiasmo. La trentaquattresima Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup e il primo Rolex IMA Maxi 1 World Championship , manifestazione organizzata dallo Yacht Club Costa Smeralda con il supporto del Title sponsor Rolex – con il quale ricorrono quest’anno i 40 anni di partnership – si è conclusa con successo nelle acque di Porto Cervo. Il primo Rolex IMA Maxi 1 World Championship è stato vinto da Leopard 3 di Joost Schuijff con Ed Baird – vincitore della trentaduesima America’s Cup come timoniere di Alinghi – nel ruolo di tattico. Gli altri vincitori di categoria della 34ª Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup sono stati: Proteus di George Sakellaris in Maxi 2, il J Class Svea tra i Supermaxi, Oscar 3 di Aldo Parisotto in Maxi 3, H2O di Riccardo de Michele in Maxi 4 e Gaetana di Riccardo Pavoncelli nella classe Multiscafi.

Andrea Recordati, Commodoro dello YCCS , ha dichiarato: “Questa 34ª edizione della Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup è stata sicuramente complessa per via delle condizioni meteo che non ci hanno consentito di regatare quanto avremmo desiderato, ma va riconosciuto al Comitato di Regata e a tutta l’organizzazione dello Yacht Club Costa Smeralda di aver fatto del loro meglio. Però credo che la giornata odierna, in condizioni tipiche della Costa Smeralda con vento sostenuto e costante su un percorso costiero che ci ha visto navigare nello scenario unico dell’Arcipelago di La Maddalena, abbia dato grandi soddisfazioni e sia stata per tutti una bella regata. Congratulazioni ai vincitori delle rispettive classi e un ringraziamento a nome dello YCCS a tutti i partecipanti dell’evento che hanno contribuito a renderlo, come sempre, unico. Ancora, ringrazio per il fondamentale supporto e per la sua presenza a Porto Cervo il presidente di World Sailing, Quanhai Li, oltre al nostro partner Rolex, con il quale celebriamo i quarant’anni di partnership”.
