Superyacht GRACE: the iconic charter yacht fit for a princessBy Rebecca Bradbury | 7 June 2018 2018-06-07 - Share this on Facebook

There are few superyachts with a history as alluring as that of the 44m/145ft classic yacht GRACE . After all, this is the yacht on which movie star Grace Kelly and her husband Prince Rainier honeymooned on in 1956. But, there is a lot more to her fairy-tale past than this, and her story continues as she welcomes aboard guests for luxury yacht charters in the far-flung Galapagos Islands . GRACE’s story starts back in 1928, the year in which she first hit the water. Built in the UK by Campers and Nicholsons at their Southampton yard, she was commissioned by Argentinean tycoon Santiago Soulas, who named the yacht after his daughter Monica. Four years later, Soulas sold the yacht to Zarch Couyoumbian, a wealthy Greek gentleman who named her RION. Come 1938, she was on the market once again and, this time, she ended up in the hands of Sir George Tilley, chairman of the Prudential Insurance Co. However, when the Second World War broke out in 1939, the British conscripted the yacht for the war effort and she joined the Royal Navy with a crew of 20 renamed as HMS Noir. The vessel carried out a sterling service. As well as patrolling the entrances to the Solent, she received Winston Churchill, collected 300 soldiers on three runs from Dunkirk and even captured a German E-boat off the coast of the Isle of Wight. In October 1945, she was decommissioned and 17 months later she arrived at her original builders for restoration. Two years later she was returned to Sir George Tilley. Upon his death in 1951, she was acquired by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, owner of the iconic 99m/325ft superyacht ‘Christina O’ , and renamed ARION. Onassis then gave the yacht as a wedding gift to his friends Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly. The royal couple honeymooned aboard the yacht, which was christened ‘Deo Juvente II’, for seven weeks along the coasts of Corsica and Sardinia . Princess Grace then used the vessel to entertain important guests of the principality on day excursions in the Mediterranean, as well as for vacations with her family. In 1958, the superyacht was purchased by a Monaco-based businessman and re-named DASKA. Then, after changing hands several more times, she was acquired by her current owners in 2007. Over the course of the next two years, the yacht was rebuilt from the ground up and outfitted with the latest yachting amenities while retaining the elegance and class of her 1950s heyday. GRACE was rebuilt from the ground up and outfitted with the latest yachting amenities while retaining the elegance and class of her 1950s heyday During the extensive refit, the original blueprint for the hull and technical areas were used, and her former looks were taken into consideration but modern materials were used to provide her with the latest requirements on safety and make her more environmentally friendly. Re-christened superyacht GRACE in remembrance of the fifties film star, the classic yacht is now open for charter in the off-the-radar waters of the Galapagos Islands and is one of the finest offerings in the region. When vacationing aboard most vessels in the region, travellers have to spend their time alongside other passengers in a cruise liner setup. But, it’s possible to rent GRACE for a private yacht charter . This way, charterers and their guests have the run of the entire yacht and the crew servicing their every desire. During a charter vacation, guests can relax and socialise in a variety of deck areas. Stunning views of the region are to be had while unwinding in the upper deck’s alfresco lounge with a drink from the nearby bar in hand or while taking a dip in the spa pool, situated forward on the main deck. Sun-lovers will love the intimate top deck sun-bathing area and, in the evening, the entire charter party can get-together for a delicious dinner in the aft deck alfresco dining area. Side decks also ensure guests are treated to 360-degree panoramas of their surroundings when cruising the archipelago. There is even a private stern resting area with the original 1927 wheel inscribed with ‘Due Juvante’ - the name of the luxury yacht while owned by the prince and princess. Inside, GRACE continues to wow with her Adriana Hoyos-styled interior. The highest quality materials have been brought together to retain her classic charm, and original pieces of the yacht are found throughout, bringing the heritage of this iconic yacht back to life. On the main deck, the main salon features two sumptuous seating areas. This deck is also home to the Grace Kelly suite which, sitting in the exact same place as where the princess’s suite was in the 1950s, boasts timeless modern styling, including tailored furniture and a modern en suite. On the upper deck, there are two master suites and two twin cabins. The accommodation is completed by two double cabins, two twin cabins and a double cabin with a single berth on the lower deck. In total, the yacht can sleep 18 guests. For more information on chartering M/Y GRACE, speak to your preferred charter broker . Comparing the superyacht models leading the Princess fleetPerhaps traditionally known for its sub-24-metre boats, British builder Princess Yachts has established itself in the luxury superyacht scene with striking yachts in its M Class series. But it was when Princess first unveiled a completely new design concept with the X Class and the X95 that the Plymouth builder truly created a stir within the 24-metre-plus segment. The design of X95 was not just a departure from anything previously created by the British yard, it also allowed for volumes you might find on a 35-metre yacht – although it remained under the flag classification rules at 29 metres. Today, the X95 is joined by her sibling the Y95. Yet while the 29.1-metre yachts use the same hull structure and engineering platform, the layouts are dramatically different. The Y95, typified by a beautiful, but traditional raised-pilothouse design, has an open flybridge and hence plenty of exterior space. The X95, on the other hand, has been marketed as a "space age"-styled yacht with an enclosed flybridge and a single enclosed helm. With that in mind, it can be hard to know which of the models is the right one for you. Will it be an open or enclosed flybridge? Will it be a master suite on the main deck or an open-plan "country kitchen"? An enclosed skylounge or more exterior space? BOAT unpacks the defining features behind the builder's iconic superyacht range. The X95 "Super Flybridge" and the Y95 open bridgeThe key difference between the X95 Vista and Y95 is the flybridge. On the Y95, there is an open flybridge area featuring a flybridge helm and a raised pilot house. This differs from the X95 Vista, which has an enclosed flybridge and a single enclosed helm, freeing up space to allow the flybridge and main deck interior to cover almost the full length of the yacht. This creates the X Class's defining characteristic: the "Super Flybridge". This layout design provides 10 per cent more outdoor space and 40 per cent more indoor space than a traditional motor yacht, making the X95 Vista perfect for those who wish to spend extended time on board and voyage further afield. Meanwhile, architectural innovations on the Y95 create a vast, asymmetric flybridge layout. To starboard you will find the upper helm with twin helm seats, while a forward-facing L-shaped seating area is to port. Aft of this, she offers a large deck area for free-standing furniture and a dining table that seats 10 along with a fully equipped bar with twin barbecue, hob, drawer refrigerator and a large pop-up outdoor TV. Guests can enjoy superyacht space on the X95 Vista's main deck with a line of sight, on the standard configuration, through the forward windows and new open bow design which provides panoramic views. Accessed via an internal staircase, the upper deck is where the magic happens: the fully enclosed and climate-controlled sky lounge is the perfect place to soak up sea views while being sheltered from the elements. Outdoor dining and seating can be found on the aft section of the X95 Vista together with a second sundeck forward where a large seating area and sunpad or optional spa bath is situated. Owners who opt for the X Class can choose between a main deck master suite or an open-plan "country kitchen". If this is the case, the full-beam master can be located on the lower deck, complemented by a forward stateroom with a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite bathroom. Further port and starboard guest cabins can also be found on the lower deck, all on a single level which helps to make the lower deck feel enormous. On the Y95, the full-beam master suite is found on the main deck and bathes in natural light thanks to the addition of skylights. Below deck, four further beautifully appointed ensuite cabins host guests, whilst crew accommodation is situated aft of the machinery space and includes an ensuite captain’s cabin and bunk cabin. Numerous interior configurations are possible thanks to its innovative interior layout and increased volume afforded by the new hull design. Owners also have the choice of a beach club on both models or a dedicated garage that provides storage for a Sea-Doo Spark (or equivalent), plus numerous other water toys. Form and functionSpeaking about the company's strategy, Princess Yachts' sales director, Simon Colebrooke, explains: “The X95 was designed to appeal to a whole new generation of Princess owners and to those that might want to extend their stays on board, such is the space the layout generates. The Y95 builds on the best attributes of the X Class, appealing to our heartland, with a strong focus on elegant design and modern boating life. The Y95’s design is a classic example of form and function that beautifully come together to create our largest Y Class yacht.” The Y95 offers spacious outdoor living spaces that are comparable to larger yachts and an interior more aligned with Princess Yachts' M Class boats. Thanks to side door access on the flybridge, the yacht feels more spacious than a typical 30-metre. It also provides guests with a simple transition to the foredeck area, the perfect place for soaking up the sun's rays. Having an enclosed skybridge on the X95 Vista affords different benefits – including the enclosed and climate-controlled sky lounge on the X95 Vista, suitable for different weather conditions. Recently redesigned to align with Princess’ latest exterior styling, the X95 Vista also features a new single-piece hull window that stretches the length of her profile. Also enhancing her exterior design is the redesigned bow structure, which has been opened up. Guests can now enjoy panoramic views from the forward windows of the main deck or from the sanctuary of the foredeck seating area, which provides the perfect haven to sit and take in the surroundings. Powered by twin MAN V12-2000 engines, both models can reach top speeds of up to 23 knots. For more information about the Y95 and X95 yachts, contact Princess Yachts today. King Charles Wrote of 'Unbearable Emptiness' in Unearthed Letter Written Months After Princess Diana's DeathThe former Prince of Wales wrote of "bewilderment and confusion that accompanies the removal of someone so young from the world" in the letter, dated Dec. 8, 1997 Tim Graham Photo Library/Getty A letter King Charles wrote in the immediate aftermath of Princess Diana ’s Aug. 31, 1997, death is shedding new light on his grief. The King, who was then Prince Charles, wrote about “unbearable emptiness” just under four months after the late Princess of Wales died in a car accident in Paris. The letter, sent to Peter Houghton, recently sold at auction for $2,000, according to the Daily Mail . It is clear in the letter that Houghton is also grieving, as the former Prince of Wales writes that his heart “bleeds” for him following the death of “dear Liz” (who the royal referred to as a “life-enhancer”) after an illness. Charles added that he could imagine the “agony” Houghton was going through and “longed to wave a magic wand to transform the situation.” Courtesy: RR Auction The letter then addresses his “bewilderment and confusion that accompanies the removal of someone so young from the world” — a familiar feeling, as his ex-wife, Princess Diana, was just 36 at the time of her death. The three-page handwritten letter was written on Highgrove House letterhead and dated Dec. 8, 1997, just over three months after Princess Diana died, leaving behind sons Prince William and Prince Harry , then just 15 and 12, respectively. It is signed “Charles” and has its original envelope included in the sale, which had the future monarch's instructions for the letter to be delivered “by hand.” Per the Daily Express , the seller of the letter is unknown. The letter’s sale was handled by RR Auction out of Boston, and a spokesperson for the company said that “this lengthy handwritten letter to ‘Peter’ expresses his sympathy upon the death of a loved one. Charles was likely particularly emotional at the time he wrote the letter, as Princess Diana had tragically passed away just a few months before in August 1997.” The letter also elaborates on the royal’s Christian faith and his beliefs on what happens when someone dies, quoting a Bible passage that reads, "Now we see through a glass darkly, but then face-to-face.” He added, “Personally, I believe that there is another dimension beyond this physical one and that we will be amazed to discover it for ourselves when we are eventually — or at a moment — called upon to make that certain journey for ourselves.” Can't get enough of PEOPLE's Royals coverage?
