Clients often debate about which of the production catamaran brands to purchase. Is there a significant difference between a Fountain-Pajot, Lagoon, and Leopard? After an 11 day delivery of a Leopard 46 from Fort Lauderdale to Cartagena, Colombia and a delivery of a Lagoon 440 in March from Fort Lauderdale to Annapolis , in many respects the Leopard out classed the Lagoon including performance, durability, and comfort. New on the Docks: Leopard 46

Leopard Catamarans has unveiled the Leopard 46 sailing cat.
“The Leopard 46 is a testament to Leopard Catamarans and Robertson and Caine’s commitment to engineering excellence and elevated onboard living,” Franck Bauguil, global sales manager at Leopard Catamarans, stated in a press release. “We have meticulously designed and built a vessel that not only delivers exceptional performance but also provides an unparalleled level of luxury and comfort.”
The Leopard 46 has an exterior design inspired by powercats. Its wraparound coachroof windows allow for panoramic views and lots of natural light inside. The companionway sliding door fully retracts abaft the helm station, connecting the saloon and cockpit as a single area for relaxation and entertainment.
Other key features include a hybrid electric drive option and integrated solar panels, both of which have the potential to make cruising more sustainable and efficient.
Leopard allows owners to personalize the 46 by ordering one of several layouts. Options include three staterooms plus a utility room; or four- and five-stateroom variations. Owners also can choose the configuration of tables and furniture in the saloon and cockpit.
There’s an optional performance-sail package, as well as an optional lifting tender platform.
Where to see the Leopard 46: The boat is expected to be at the Annapolis Sailboat Show in October, where it will be a nominee for Cruising World ’s 2025 Boat of the Year. It will also be available for charter through The Moorings and Sunsail.

The opening between the nacelle and cockpit is much wider than on the 45, with the idea being to offer an open configuration that doesn’t compromise the comfort of a closed layout (for nighttime or bad weather). Alexis3 is a 2008 model Leopard 46 built in 2007. She was with the Moorings in the Seychelles until 2012 when she was purchased by the previous owner and kept there until we bought her in 2017 to replace our Leopard 45 Cool Runnings we lost in Irma. We sailed Alexis3 3,000 miles to Cape Town in December 2017 and spent 6 months until July 2018 doing an extensive refit and refurbishment as listed below.
We left Cape Town on 7 July 2018, and arrived in Grenada on 28 August after a wonderful Atlantic crossing. The Leopard 46 has proved to be a superb cruising cat with her high bridge deck eliminating all slamming. She sails beautifully at all points of sail and can maintain 30 degs off the apparent wind in a good breeze.
The solid build, high bridge deck, large water and diesel tanks, water maker, and excellent accommodation make her a true blue water cruiser or charter boat.
We brought Alexis3 back to the Caribbean to continue our chartering business. But after 14 years in the Caribbean, we have decided it is time to return to our home and family in South Africa.
Alexis3 ‘s $100,000+ refit and refurbishment must rank her at the top of the list of 46’s available on the market.
One of the many upgrades was the repainting of the dark cherry wood of the saloon and passages, a light off-white, matching the ceilings, which together with her new linen herring bone upholstery and new blond oak vinyl flooring throughout, create a light bright modern finish.
All the cabins have been upgraded with new mattresses, twin ceiling fans and the heads with new shower and faucet fittings.
The cockpit of the 46 is probably the most spacious of all boats of this size. This with the all-around sun screens and the fully enclosed helm station, comfortable seats and scatter cushions make it a superb lounging area in all conditions,
The decks are wide and easy to negotiate and the new trampoline, large foredeck and generous window steps provide comfortable and safe seating and lounging while sailing and at anchor.

Owner Notes: We purchased this 46PC for a trip from Fort Lauderdale to Maine in the Summer of 2023. We experienced no mechanical issues during the 5,000 mile trip over 3 months. New boats, whether less expensive or yachts, almost always have minor issues with various items. ATM only experienced having to replace the cooktop, fan in the starboard A/C unit and updates to the Raymarine package. Upon return we experienced an issue with the steering which was found on many new Leopards. Leopard replaced the Empire Bus system at their expense. To the very best of my knowledge, everything on ATM is functioning very well. While on the hard for bottom paint in June, 2024, a survey was completed to insure that everything was working properly.
