The Mainship Rum Runner is one of the best designs ever to emerge from the Mainship factory. This 2001 model is immaculate, with low engine hours, a rebuilt Next Gen 3.5 Kw generator, full electronics, factory air conditioning and much more. She sports an awlgripped burgundy hull, with aluminum frame and excellent canvas.
Unlike the newer M 30 Rum Runners, this model has the larger rudder and skeg giving her superior tracking and handling characteristics. She's equipped with the more powerful Cummins 4 with 250 HP so she cruises at 13 knots while sipping diesel at only 5 GPH.
You will not find a cleaner, better maintained or better equipped Mainship Rum Runner at any price. Call now for your private showing and see why Mainship built over 700 of these efficient, well designed down east derived cruisers Mainship 30's.

We, the present owners of Patriot , were life-long sailors prior to purchasing our Mainship Pilot 30. We had owned eight sailboats up to 37 feet and considered ourselves quite knowledgeable about sailboats in general-- the build quality of various brands, their sailing characteristics, and value. When it came to powerboats we were novices and knew it. This led us to do a lot of research. Fortunately, in the age of the Internet we could do a lot of looking without actually going to visit every boat that struck our fancy. But we did visit several, mainly downeast style cruisers as we liked the salty look and generally practical layout of many of these boats.
Over time we homed in on the Mainship Pilot 30. Because of our limited knowledge about powerboats in general we were reassured by the large numbers of Pilot 30's sold over a long span of time-- about ten years. Could 700 buyers be wrong? The Pilot 30 is perhaps the all time largest powerboat seller in the 30 ft range. In reflecting on the sailboats that we had owned, we realized that the most all-around satisfactory of them were the ones that had sold in large numbers.
Once we had settled on the Pilot 30 it became of question of which model year or years. Like most builders who have a successful long-running model, Mainship felt compelled to "freshen" the Pilot 30 from time to time. Sometimes freshening works out as equipment is added or feedback from buyers suggests certain changes. And sometimes change for the sake of change does not work out so well. The Pilot 30 model run experienced all three of these kinds of freshening.
Initially, the standard engine in the Pilot 30 was the six cylinder Cummins rated at 210 HP. We went to contract on one of these boats (I think a '99) but found at sea trial that 210 HP simply was not sufficient for the Pilot 30. The boat that we sea-trialed topped out at about 12 kts. and really wanted to cruise at 8-9 kts. This seemed to be where the engine's "sweet spot" was in its rev range. I judged this performance to be unsatisfactory and cancelled the deal. Also, we noted that this boat did not have a transom door, an improvement that came with the 2000 model.
Further research disclosed that Mainship had discontinued the 210 HP Cummins effective with the 2001 model year. The engine used for the first three model years was replaced by either the 240 HP Yanmar or, in the upgraded Rum Runner model like Patriot , the 250 HP Cummins.
At this point we knew that we did not want a boat older than the 2001 model year.
We next looked at a 2004 model that was located only a few miles from where we lived in Connecticut at the time. This boat was gorgeous and was the upgraded Rum Runner model. We were quite taken by its pristine appearance, including its yellow hull, as well as the other Rum Runner upgrades. After visiting this boat we did some more research and found that a number of changes had been made effective with the 2003 model year, some of which we thought were problematic.
There were some changes to the interior vs. the '99 model that we noted during our visit that we did not care for but they probably were not deal breakers for us. But I was very concerned about changes that had been made to the hull in order to reduce the draft. The reduction in draft was achieved by creating a "pocket" in the hull for the propeller. This required shortening the full length skeg by about eight feet and reducing the area of the rudder by about one-half. My concern was that these two changes would degrade the handling of the boat in a seaway, especially in a following sea. We have heard from one owner of a Pilot II who confirms this to be the case. In contrast, we have found Patriot with her full-length skeg to be rock solid in any seaway, and with her large rudder there is no problem maintaining a straight course.
Our research around the changes made for 2003 also disclosed that on some boats the propeller pocket itself has been problematic. It seems that unless the shaft has been installed exactly on centerline (and remember that these boats are hand built) the bubbles being flung off the tip of the prop blades will, on the side of the pocket where the clearance has been reduced, wear away the gelcoat and permit moisture to enter the laminate. Most builders who build hulls with propeller pockets will line the pocket with bronze sheathing to prevent the pocking that can occur when there is inadequate blade clearance. Mainship did not do this.
At this point we knew that we did not want a Pilot 30 newer than 2002. We wanted a 2001 or a 2002 model.
We were very fortunate to locate a low-hour 2001 Rum Runner with the high horse power Cummins B-250 and which had all essential options.
We have loved Patriot and have prepared herfor long-term ownership with new canvas (full enclosure), new helm deck cushion covers, and an epoxy bottom job. Unfortunately, our plans have changed and Patriot no longer fits our life style. Thus she is now offered for sale.
