Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Also sold, originally, as the BALTIC 28 (Baltic Marine).

Review of Shipman 28

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The interior is like most other boats made of teak. Teak has the advantage of being naturally very oily and therefore water-repellent, which is suitable on boats. The boat is equipped with 2 cabins, 5 berths, a galley, 75.0 liter fresh water capacity and toilet facility.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Shipman 28 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated. As the surface of a fin type keel is just a fraction of the total wet surface, the difference between an iron keel and a lead keel can in reality be ignored for cruising yachts.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.55 - 1.65 meter (5.09 - 5.39 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Shipman 28 is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar YSE8 diesel engine

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenance than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 25.0 liters (6 US gallons, 5 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Shipman 28 is 1.82, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.1 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Shipman 28 is about 111 kg/cm, alternatively 624 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 111 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 624 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 20m 2 (215 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Shipman 28 vs Albin Ballad

Hey guys, I've been researching both of these boats extensively over the past months and found them both quite intriguing (shipman 28 and Albin Ballad). However, I simply can't make up my mind and hoped for some personal experience here/pros and cons I plan on using the boat as a liveaboard (don't mind the cramped space), but also plan on using the boat for ocean passages at some time. With the ultimate goal of transatlantic passing. So bluewater cruising to some degree is a must. Thanks!

Well-known member.

Welcome to the Forum FB. I think that one can safely say that they are both inherently good designs - in which case it will come down to the condition of the boats that you go to look at. Ideally you want to buy a boat which has had all the expensive things like engine and sails (maybe even electronics as well) replaced relatively recently. As otherwise you could buy a boat, and then quickly find that you have to spend more than the purchase price to re-fit it.

I'd second what Bajansailor said, for the boats (of a similar style) on the market at any one time, you'd be better focusing on the condition (recent engine/sails/standing rigging) and fit-out of the boat (upgraded solar/batteries/windvane/cockpit canopy etc.) rather than the exact design. If your planning on living aboard an offshore rule style boat maybe the Scampi is worth considering, they are surprisingly spacious down below and the later ones were build by Shipman or Albin

Thanks for the fast replies guys! I met up with an albin Ballad owner to see and feel it with my own eyes, but was actually a bit too small for my liking. I'm currently searching around for the Mamba 31 and while it looks great inside and so on, I'm a bit unsure of its blue water capabilities... Do you happen to know anything about that?

I must admit that I had not heard of the Mamba 31 before, so I asked Sailboat Data - https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/mamba-31 Here is one for sale - but not much info unless you log in - Mamba 31, 1979 DKK 109,500 | Denmark | Sailing boat for sale And one here - Buy Mamba 311 | Mamba 311 for sale Re bluewater capabilities, you would probably find that this boat, also the Ballad and the Shipman, would be able to cope with much worser weather than you can. Again with a Mamba, it all comes down to equipment condition versus asking price. Some info on the Shipman 28 on Sailboat Data - https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/shipman-28 And the Albin Ballad - https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/ballad-30-albin

Thank you very much. I apologize for the many questions! Do you happen to know anything about the "harmony 31"? English built

All else being equal, I think I would prefer a Harmony 31 for blue water cruising rather than any of the other boats mentioned above, simply because she should generally have a more comfortable motion at sea with her long keel, and she should be more amenable to working with a wind vane. https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/harmony-31 She should also be 'cheaper' than the others above - but again condition of boat and equipment is everything here. They mention her sister ship the Trintella IIa - https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/trintella-iia The Contest 29 is similar to the Harmony and Trintella - https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/contest-29 While the Contest 30 is similar to the other boats mentioned previously - https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/contest-30

Broker's Comments

The Shipman 28 was first introduced to the market in 1968. Swedish designed, she is a modern classic with traditional lines. She is a good littel sea worthy yacht. This example has been very well looked after by her current owners, with the original Farymann single cylinder diesel having been professionally rebuilt 100hrs ago. All navigation and safety equipment is included, so she is ready to set sail! Annualy maintained, she was antifouling last July, had a new cutlass bearing and also Tech Deck covering in the cockpit. Priced to sell! Portugese flagged.

  1. SHIPMAN 28

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.
