Luxury Riverboats Are Giving Superyacht Charters a Run for Your Money

With the rise of expedition yachting in remote destinations such as Antarctica , Greenland, and Indonesia’s Raja Ampat, there’s a general belief that all corners of the globe are now accessible by private yacht charter.

But there’s still one type of waterway where chartering is largely untapped: the world’s great rivers, both well-traveled and remote. But in the last year, this boundary has started to shift with a new generation of luxury riverboats that are dock in historic cities like Budapest on the Danube or distant backwaters such as La Han Bay in Vietnam.

A Yacht That Hosted John F. Kennedy, Richard M. Nixon, and 3 Other Presidents Is Up for Charter

The Ritz-Carlton's Massive New 790-Foot Megayacht Just Hit the High Seas

“River cruising is the beneficiary of a larger travel trend in which luxury travelers are looking to do nothing,” Daniel Levine, director of New York consultancy Avant-Guide Institute , tells Robb Report . “By that, I mean they can visit multiple ports and soak up plenty of culture and history, all without changing hotels.”

This new fleet of river cruisers can access inland cities and remote stretches of countryside that are inaccessible to large oceangoing vessels. Plus, Levine says, there’s an added advantage to river travel: no seasickness.

One leader of the new set of purpose-built riverboats is Aqua Expeditions , the luxury river cruise operator whose first vessel, Aria Amazon , set sail on the Peruvian Amazon in 2011. Over a decade later, the fleet has grown to three river ships, none with more than 20 suites, cruising both the Amazon and the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia, along with two oceangoing yachts in the Galapagos and Eastern Indonesia.

“On my river ships, 30 percent of departures are now private buyouts, similar to traditional charters,” says founder Francesco Galli Zugaro. These clients, mainly multigenerational family groups or large gatherings of friends, are people who tend to vacation on yachts rather than the typical cruise ship crowd. Most of them have come to the riverboats, says Galli Zugaro, after chartering one of Aqua Expeditions’ two yachts.

Galli Zugaro says the vessels adhere to similar standards as a superyacht, with the same bespoke itineraries as a private charter. “Guests have the run of the ship, of course, but they can also customize their experiences to be as active—or not—as they want,” he says. “We recently had 20 couples, all friends, buy out one of our boats. They doubled the number of biking experiences we normally offer.”

The desire for off-the-beaten-track travel is fueling this new interest in riverboat charters, says Frédéric Crétin, a Monaco-based charter broker at superyacht brokerage Camper & Nicholsons . “We’ve had a surge in enquiries for the Peruvian Amazon, especially with Americans since it’s not too far from home,” says Crétin, who manages whole-boat bookings for the Aqua Expeditions fleet.

Heritage Line operates five traditionally-styled ships along the upper and lower Mekong River and in Vietnam’s Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay. “Our vessels, particularly our small ship sailing charters on Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay, have seen an increase in private stays,” says CEO John Tue Nguyen. “We now average 12 to 15 charters annually, including families, multi-generational bookings and VIP travelers.”

In Egypt, a gap in the market to showcase the country’s temples in a private, exclusive way, was behind the launch of the Nile River’s first luxury charter yacht in 2022, Berge . “Our clients are mostly royal families, politicians, celebrities, and athletes,” says Armen Kazazian of Kazazian Cruises , the yacht’s owner. “They don’t want to share the Egypt experience with hundreds of other people.”

The 180-foot, nine-cabin vessel has recently been joined by a sistership, the 196-foot, nine-cabin Arax . True to superyacht protocol, charters are secured with an official MYBA (The Worldwide Yachting Association) contract, and in the lead-up to the charter, a preference form is sent out to gather information on dietary preferences and daily routines to ensure everything is ready for your arrival.

But river charter differs from traditional yachting as well. “Because the Nile is calm, the build requirements aren’t as strict,” says Kazazian. “You can have huge, full-width windows and bigger spaces.” Exteriors tend to be boxy and not particularly attractive. But the interiors can be just as elegant and even larger than many superyachts. On board Arax , the owner’s suite is 1,500 square feet.

The differences also include having no water toys as on a conventional superyacht charter. “But we overcome that with the destination and experiences, such as candlelit dinners on private islands,” says Kazazian.

Inland cruising has multiple benefits, says Matthew Shollar of Transcend Cruises , Europe’s first charter-only, river-cruise company. “You’re not just in coastal locations and you can take your whole group off the boat to a spa, or go biking, or shopping,” Shollar says. “And a riverboat always docks close to your destination.”

In September 2025, the company’s first ship, the 443-foot Transcend , will launch, with a second identical vessel following in early 2026. Penned by Tillberg Design of Sweden, both are built to European riverboat specs but draw inspiration from superyachts for style and amenities, including a 2,600-square-foot indoor/outdoor fitness, spa, and guest wellness facility.

“The single most expensive piece of equipment on board is a hot tip from superyachts, a 144-inch C Seed unfolding television,” continues Shollar. “It’s a worthwhile investment for guests to enjoy everything from silent discos to movie nights on the sun deck.”

While the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) trade is set to be Transcend Cruises’ main market, the founders know that there’s a demand for private buyouts—especially given their vessels’ capacity to accommodate up to 120 people, or 10 times the 12-guest standard on most charter yachts. The vessels’ 60, 210-square-foot cabins can be converted into 30 larger 420-square-foot suites.

The company soft-launched Transcend Advance this summer to better examine the private market’s potential. It took over a five-star vessel from Riverside Luxury Cruises. One client, celebrating his 60th birthday party, had never considered a riverboat charter, but was lured by being able to host many more guests. “We designed a six-day itinerary that was flexible and unique,” says Kimberly Daley, Transcend’s chief revenue officer. “It enabled him and his friends to see chartering in a whole new way.”

Transcend will sail “the highest-demand European waterways,” including the Rhine, Danube, and Moselle, offering waterside access to historic cities like Trier, Budapest, and Belgrade.

But a second collection of smaller luxury barges is carrying charter to canals and smaller waterways. Both Belmond’s 128-foot Coquelicot and European Waterways’ Kir Royale launched in France’s Champagne region this year, with a max capacity of six and eight guests, respectively, and the possibility of whole-boat bookings. This combination of space, intimacy, pastoral views and access to exceptional vineyards can’t be replicated on oceangoing yachts.

While luxury riverboats are still a small niche compared to the larger world of superyacht charters, they offer another kind of cruising experience.

Breaking news, world’s largest isolated tribe kills two loggers with arrows in amazon forest.

Members of a violent and isolated Amazon tribe shot two loggers dead with arrows in Peru, after several previous attacks and repeated warnings that a tree-cutting project had encroached on their territory, according to reports.

The Mashco Piro tribe — which is believed to be the biggest group of indigenous people living with no outside contact — opened fire in a remote section of the rainforest near the Las Piedras River Thursday, the UK Guardian reported.

A third logger was injured and two more were reported missing after the bow-and-arrow blitz, an indigenous advocacy group told the outlet.

Mashco Piro tribe on the shores of the Amazon

“This is a tragedy that was entirely avoidable. The Peruvian authorities have known for years that this area that they chose to sell off for logging was actually the Mashco Piro’s territory,” said Caroline Pearce, executive director of Survival International.

The deadly attack came one day after a logging company — which has been chopping down trees on the border of the tribe’s jungle turf — lost its “sustainability certification” for eight months, the paper reported.

The firm, Canales Tahuamanu, was accused of building logging roads inside the tribe’s territory and was stripped of its certification by the country’s Forest Stewardship Council.

The indigenous group had previously fired arrows, reportedly in an illegal logging camp, leaving one logger wounded on July 27. In 2022, tribe members also shot arrows that killed one logger and left another injured.

Pearce said the controversial logging project put both the tribe and local workers in danger.

“By facilitating the logging and destruction of this rainforest they’re not only endangering the very survival of the Mashco Piro people, who are incredibly vulnerable to epidemics of disease brought in by outsiders, but they’ve knowingly put the lives of the logging workers in danger,” she said.

sign warning locals about the dangers of interacting with the indigenous tribe

Peru’s ministry of culture, which oversees indigenous rights, said it’s investigating reports of the logger deaths. It plans to send a police helicopter to the area where the incident took place.

“Recent developments have heightened concerns regarding the potential risks to the Mashco Piro’s safety and wellbeing,” the agency said in a statement.

The tree-cutting firm has been granted permission to log on the jungle land since 2002 — and its activity has spread over more than 190 square miles, the Washington Post reported in May.

Roughly 50 members of the secluded tribe were captured in stunning footage emerging near a riverbank last month.

Despite the tribe’s isolation, members have had violent encounters with tourists and other indigenous groups in recent years.

Some have reportedly been seen firing arrows at tourist boats along with a “warning arrow” at a park ranger in Manu National Park.

The violence reached new heights when the group killed a member of another tribe, Nicolas “Shaco” Flores, who had been trying to contact them. Flores was shot in the heart with an arrow in 2011.

Some members of the tribe have reportedly also emerged from the forest in an attempt to trade machetes and food with residents of nearby villages along with Christian missionaries.

SKYFALL is currently for sale for an asking price of $29.5m

Superyacht SKYFALL is as iconic as the James Bond movie it shares its name with. Owned by an American real estate developer, the 190-foot motor yacht features a distinctive silhouette and a boatload of stand-out amenities including a panoramic sky lounge, a split-level owner’s cabin and a helipad that converts into a basketball court. As well as being highly appealing to owners, she’s a successful charter yacht that’s renowned for her ability to entertain.

SKYFALL was built by American luxury motor yacht builder Trinity Yachts in 2010 for the shipyard’s owner. “SKYFALL is the most exquisite superyacht ever delivered by Trinity Yachts and is a shining example of American craftsmanship and pride,” says Frank Grzeszczak Sr of FGI Yacht Group. “In a market where yachts of her size are rarely this versatile, SKYFALL stands out as a unique offering. With a Bahamas-friendly draft, aluminum construction, speeds exceeding 20 knots, a flexible seven-cabin layout—including a bi-level primary suite—and expansive lounges, SKYFALL sets herself apart from others in her class.”

The current owner bought her in 2018 from an American automobile tycoon and completed a full refit in 2020, including elegant, timeless interiors by designers Patrick Knowles and Even Marshall. Now, as the owner builds a new, larger, 270-foot yacht with an Italian shipyard, they’ve reluctantly put SKYFALL up for sale.

As SKYFALL enters the market with FGI , the owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, gives Forbes an exclusive look at life onboard the yacht and reveals his favorite experiences and spaces, as well as his top tips for superyacht ownership.

What initially captivated you about SKYFALL?

Owner: SKYFALL is an iconic yacht. She really has the best of all worlds. She has semi displacement which means she is fast and efficient. She also has a shallow draft that allows her to get into anchorages or ports that other similar sized boats can’t even try to get into. In the Bahamas, for example, it is typical for SKYFALL to be anchored close to shore while other 60-meter (190-foot) boats are a mile or more offshore.

What are your favourite memories onboard SKYFALL?

We have had a lot of fun with family and friends on SKYFALL. The list of great memories onboard is quite long. The bridge deck outdoor dining table is where we always try to have meals unless the weather is very bad. We have had a lot of great discussions with family and friends around that table that will last a lifetime. We also like that the sundeck that has two hot tubs with plenty of space, which is where we have pre-dinner canapes every night while we watch the sun set wherever we might be.

One thing that often grabs people’s attention is the basketball goal that also is a helideck on the sundeck. We have had a lot of competitive games of basketball on sundeck, sometimes with a number of spectators watching from afar.

The top deck of SKYFALL features a basketball court, helipad, pool, hot tub and dining area

What is your favourite space onboard?

The sky lounge is group favorite. It has twin 80-inch TVs, so there isn’t a bad place in the sky lounge to view a game.

Please talk us through the owner’s cabin and how you designed it to suit your lifestyle.

The owner’s cabin on SKYFALL is exactly what we wanted on a boat. The master bed faces the bow with large windows which means we get to wake up every morning to an amazing view. The sitting area is perfect for getting a break from guests when we just need some time to ourselves. The suite also has ‘His and Hers’ separate baths and closets, which is a requirement for us. My wife and I always say that the key to a long and happy marriage is separate bathrooms and closets.

The office in the master suite is a welcome retreat for me so I can get work done privately without being disturbed, and more importantly, without waking up my wife.

A cabin onboard SKYFALL superyacht

Where are your favourite places to visit around the world?

It has always been non-negotiable for our family that we spend New Year’s together in Saint Bart’s on the boat. In early spring, she spends a few weeks in the Bahamas, and then typically we send her over to the Med for the summer season. She then comes back for a quick yard period in the fall, does the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, and then makes her way back to the Caribbean.

What makes SKYFALL such a successful charter yacht?

The feedback from charter guests has been that this is a great multi-generational boat. We have all the fun toys for kids, and lots of relaxing spaces for adults. Three generations in a family can travel together and have a great trip for different reasons. With the multitude of large beds, it is also a great boat for several couples to travel together.

Interiors are elegant and timeless

What first inspired you to become a yacht owner?

Our family had been chartering yachts for about 12 years. More and more we found ourselves wanting to spend time on the water. We had been loosely talking about buying a yacht when we started attending the annual Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. I’m not an impulse buyer, but when we found a boat that we thought would work for our lifestyle, we knew (or rather, my wife knew) that was the boat for us.

What does yacht ownership give you that villa or a hotel ownership couldn’t?

We often talk about how owning a yacht allows you to basically have a home nearly anywhere in the world. We like new places, and we like to explore, but we like to have a familiar home base to come back to at the end of a long day. A yacht gives you the advantage of being in the Med in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter sleeping in the same bed every night.

Guests can enjoy indoor and outdoor dining areas

Why have you decided to put SKYFALL on the sales market – and why now?

We are building a new boat, and it is time to let this one go. We are sad to part with her, but we hope she will find a new family that will create many new memories on her as we have.

What would be your biggest piece of advice to the next owner of SKYFALL?

Have fun with her. That’s what she is for. This boat loves to be used so if you have a destination in mind, she’s ready to go.

The decks have plenty of space for entertainment and relaxation

Want to be the new owner of SKYFALL? Here’s how

SKYFALL is currently for sale for an asking price of $29,500,000. Interested parties should contact the broker, Frank Grzeszczak Sr, Founder & President at FGI Yacht Group , who says: “Simply put, SKYFALL is the finest American superyacht available today. The price has recently been adjusted to $29,500,000, reflecting the seller's commitment to securing a fair price for this extraordinary vessel.”

Billionaire ex-Tottenham owner's massive superyacht labelled an 'eyesore' by Dartmouth residents

The colossal 322ft Aviva, owned by former Spurs owner Joe Lewis, has been anchored in the picturesque town since early August

Locals have branded a superyacht owned by billionaire former Spurs owner Joe Lewis an "absolute eyesore" after it moored in their Devon town a month ago.

The massive £250 million, 322ft Aviva, which serves as the magnate's floating home and office complete with a full-size padel tennis court, has been anchored off Dartmouth since early August. The vessel embarked from Troon, Scotland, docking around August 5.

It was one of its few UK appearances since being detained by US courts for over a year while Mr Lewis was embroiled in "brazen" insider trading allegations. The 87-year-old avoided prison time, due to poor health, but was handed a £3.8million fine and a three-year probation period, the Express reports.

  • Plans for new 8,000-home Devon town to go on show
  • Sports pitch moved to make way for major Devon relief road

Yet, the yacht's prolonged presence has irked some Dartmouth locals, with Michael Rowland condemning the yacht as "an absolute eyesore" and Geraldine Wood criticising it as "totally out of place in beautiful Dartmouth".

A local told The Sun : "I love this town and I wouldn't want to do it down but why does a billionaire want to stay here for the whole of August instead of the Caribbean or the Med? It's been raining constantly for the last few weeks. I guess he's here for the regatta that starts this week but who knows how long he'll stay.

"It's just a huge floating gin palace, miles bigger than anything else in the harbour. We've seen his crew come and go in a tender but I don't know if he's even onboard - nobody's heard anything."

The Aviva was built in 2017 and can sleep 16 people, with a top speed of 20 knots and an environmentally friendly hybrid electric propulsion system. Last month, t he vessel was spotted alongside two other superyachts, the Elysian and the Constance , on the river Dart.

The British-flagged, 56-metre-long yacht, which the experts estimated cost around US$40-million, capsized and went down on Aug. 19 within minutes of being hit by a predawn storm while anchored off northern Sicily.

The superyacht’s hull was insured against physical damage by yacht insurance provider OMAC and a consortium of insurers including Travelers Companies Inc, Navium Marine and Convex, Reuters reported last week.

Its protection and indemnity (P&I) insurance, which typically covers third-party liability claims including for environmental damage, injury and death, was provided by British Marine.

The hull was likely insured for around US$40-million, while the P&I cover would be larger, insurance sources said.

“Our understanding is that the cost of the boat was between US$40 and US$50-million, so the limit of the hull & machinery policy was probably around those values,” said Marcos Alvarez, managing director, global financial institution ratings at Morningstar DBRS.

The P&I policy would likely be “several multiples” of the hull policy, or US$200-300 million, Alvarez added, noting it would also likely cover liability payments even if the captain or crew are found to be negligent.

Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near Palermo, are investigating the captain and two other crew members. An investigation does not imply guilt or mean formal charges will follow. Prosecutors have said the probe would take time and require salvaging the wreck.

Oscar Seikaly, chief executive officer of broker NSI Insurance Group, that provides yacht insurance, estimated the hull value at US$40-70 million, but said P&I cover might not total more than US$100-million.

P&I insurance would also cover recovery of the Bayesian, said Francesco Dubbioso, country manager for Italy for insurer Alta Signa Europe, who estimated the superyacht’s value at US$30-million to US$40-million.

Reuters is the first to report the potential insurance costs. OMAC, Travelers and Navium Marine did not immediately respond to Reuters’ for comment. Convex declined to comment.

The Bayesian disaster, which has puzzled experts who said the boat would have been built to withstand a severe storm, adds to recent woes for yacht insurers, who have faced a raft of hurricane losses in the past few years.

Premium rates have risen by four to five times in the past couple of years in parts of the U.S. and the Caribbean, and yacht insurers have cut the amount of cover they provide because of the risks, Mr. Seikaly said.

As a result, insurers have increased rates and re-evaluated their guidelines and risk appetite, according to industry experts.

As well as hurricanes, insured losses have mostly stemmed from severe storms, floods, and other weather events in North America, the Caribbean, and Europe, according to a report by broker Marsh.

Mr. Seikaly said four clients had last week been ready to buy boats but changed their minds because of the high cost of insurance.

Climate change was also likely to add to yacht insurers’ worries, Mr. Seikaly added, as it throws up more unexpected events.

“Whoever thought a storm in the Mediterranean in the month of August is going to sink a ship?”

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise confirms it will continue its $4 billion suit against Mike Lynch's estate after he died in a tragic yacht sinking

  • HPE says it will continue to pursue its $4 billion lawsuit against Mike Lynch's estate.
  • Lynch, along with his daughter and top attorney, died when his superyacht sank in August.
  • Lynch and the company had been involved in a nine-year legal battle over the sale of Autonomy.

Insider Today

Hewlett Packard Enterprise said Monday that it wouldn't drop its lawsuit against the late tech tycoon Mike Lynch 's estate.

The news came two weeks after Lynch died in a tragic yacht sinking off the coast of Sicily. Lynch, along with seven others, including his daughter and his top attorney , drowned when his superyacht, Bayesian, sank.

Before his death, Lynch had been embroiled in a long legal battle with the company. Hewlett-Packard bought his software company, Autonomy, in 2011 and later accused Lynch of valuing it inaccurately. Hewlett-Packard broke into two companies — Hewlett Packard Enterprise and HP — in 2015.

An HPE spokesperson said Monday that the company would continue to pursue the lawsuit, which seeks $4 billion in damages.

Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who survived the yacht tragedy, is expected to inherit her husband's fight, Fortune reported .

"In 2022, an English High Court judge ruled that HPE had substantially succeeded in its civil fraud claims against Dr Lynch and Mr Hussain," the spokesperson said Monday in a statement to The Associated Press .

"A damages hearing was held in February 2024 and the judge's decision regarding damages due to HPE will arrive in due course," they added. "It is HPE's intention to follow the proceedings through to their conclusion."

The Monday statement came after the group initially sent a statement to several media outlets declining to comment on legal matters in light of the tragedy.

"We do not think it appropriate to comment on legal matters in these tragic circumstances," a spokesperson previously said, per Fortune . "We're saddened by this tragic event and our thoughts are with the families and friends of all the victims."

The yacht sank just weeks after Lynch and Stephen Chamberlain, his former vice president of finance, were acquitted by a San Francisco jury in June of all criminal charges related to Autonomy's sale.

The indictment accused Lynch and Chamberlain of falsifying financial documents, lying to auditors and regulators, and suppressing people who criticized Autonomy's financial practices.

A representative of HPE did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.

Correction: September 3, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated when Lynch and Chamberlain were acquitted of criminal charges. They were acquitted weeks before the yacht sank, not weeks after. An earlier version also misstated the timeline of the lawsuit. It has been in process for nine years, not 13. The story has also been updated to clarify that Hewlett Packard Enterprise is pursuing the lawsuit against Lynch's estate. HPE broke off from Hewlett-Packard in 2015.
