yacht club old scotch whisky

Description

Yacht Club is essentially a blended scotch whisky made up of about 40% malt whisky and 60% grain whisky.  Not the worst ratio in the world as there are many much bigger brands out there that use much less malt whisky with more grain.  Where Yacht Club reaches out beyond the norm is by ensuring that the grain elements are at least 5 years old while the malt whisky portion is just a fraction over the legal requirement of 3 years.

There’s no whistles and bells here.  It is what it is.  It’s a decent value scotch whisky.  There are some decent drinkable bottles out there where, without the massive marketing and advertising budgets to fund, more attention can be given to the quality of the spirts used to make the product.  This is definitely one of them.

It’s bottled and packaged in France (blended scotch whisky CAN be exported from Scotland and bottled in other countries – only single malt has to be bottled in Scotland) and it’s exported to most of Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Russia.  It typically sells for a few pennies shy of €12 euros a bottle, and we have it about 15% cheaper than that.  It comes with a box, so it’s a pocket-friendly gift for the people you don’t want to spend too much on.

Tasting Notes

We could list off a wonderful story about the nose and the palate and the finish but that would be all pretentious and churlish.  The facts are at this price, most of you would mix it anyway.  It is drinkable with ice.  Not quite as dry as a typical big brand scotch.  Some fruity notes in there.  What matters is that it’s smooth, doesn’t rip your throat off and it doesn’t give you a vile hangover the next day (unlike most cheap booze that ends up in China).

Whisky Jesus crucified a bottle of this over two days (drink responsibly people…..a bottle in a day would be stupid!) and he was still in the office both days after, bright and early, before 8am, lecturing us about our sinful ways when he found out we’d spanked a bottle of prosecco.

Final Verdict

  • Why Trust Liquor.com?

Liquor / Chloe Jeong

“You can have a single malt in America, Japan, Taiwan or elsewhere, but to be scotch, it has to be made in Scotland,” says Tommy Tardie, owner of New York's The Flatiron Room and Fine and Rare. But that’s just a starting point—there’s plenty of diversity to the nation’s signature spirit, including single malts, which are made with malted barley, and blended scotches, whose mash bills include other grains.

The world of scotch is also evolving, with restless distillers nowadays playing around with various categories of the whisky, from heavily-peated smoke bombs to sherry-cask whiskies.

“There’s been a blurring of the lines in terms of flavor profiles, and there’s more experimentation going on,” says Pedro Shanahan, spirits guide for Los Angeles bar group Pouring with Heart . “It’s exciting—it makes it more of an adventure for a novice who wants to start exploring scotch .” Our top choice, the GlenDronach Revival , is a great example of a scotch with a flavor that evolves and changes throughout the tasting experience.

From the Highlands to the isle of Islay, here are the best scotch whiskies to get you started.

Best Overall

Glendronach 15 revival single malt whisky.

Region: Highlands | ABV: 46% | Tasting Notes: Cedar, Chocolate-covered cherries, Pecans, Honey

With notes of cedar, chocolate-covered cherries, pecans and honey, The GlenDronach Revival 15-year-old scotch “evolves in layers and layers of new flavors and keeps on delivering,” according to Tardie, following through with its seemingly miles-long finish.

Aged in the Highlands in Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry casks, it starts off with a spiced fruit nose that Tardie calls “brilliant.” Drink it neat with milk chocolate or aged cheeses, or, as he suggests, "drop an ice cube in and let it sit for a few seconds and see what happens."

Best Under $50

Aberfeldy 12 year scotch whisky.

Region: Highlands | ABV: 40% | Tasting Notes: Cherry cola, Bittersweet, Tannic, Bright

For a reasonably-priced option, look no further than this whisky from Aberfeldy, a Central Highlands distillery that started operating in 1898. The facility is situated along the Pitilie Burn, a lively stream whose churning, fresh water results in a clean, brisk scotch.

An everyday pour, this whisky offers cherry cola aromas with a mouth-coating, mid-palate sweetness that finishes in bittersweet, woody tannins. Easy to drink neat, on the rocks, with a splash of water, or mixed into warming cocktails , it’s light enough at 40 percent ABV for a midday tipple, yet flavorful for post-work happy hour.

Best Under $100

Bowmore islay single malt scotch whisky 15 year darkest.

Region: Islay| ABV : 43% | Tasting Notes : Toffee, Smoke, Brine, Dried fruits

Bringing together the best of Scotland’s opposing traditions, this cherrywood-colored scotch from Bowmore, Islay’s oldest distillery, is made with heavily peated malt from island-grown barley. It’s aged primarily in bourbon barrels, but its final three years are spent in oloroso casks, where the scotch takes on its sherrylike layers.

“I love that it captures both,” says Tardie. “It’s the perfect balance: salty but sweet.” Toffee, dried fruit and swarthy smoke are finished with ocean-water salinity for what Tardie calls a multidimensional treat. “I’m not big on dessert, but if I were to have a dessert, this would be it," he says.

Glenfarclas 25 Year

Region: Speyside | ABV: 43% | Tasting Notes: Chocolate, Orange, Nuts

Glenfarclas, a sixth-generation, family-owned distillery, makes "super-affordable, super-balanced scotch," says Shanahan. Their 25-year-old scotch whisky is a citrusy, chocolatey libation, made with spring water that runs down the Speyside heather-covered hills—giving Glenfarclas its name, which means “the valley of green grass.”

The distillate is aged in oloroso casks for a nutty, sherry finish that is perfect for sipping after dinner. At less than $10 per year of aging, Shanahan points out, “you can’t beat the price.”

Best Single Malt

Lagavulin distiller's edition islay single malt scotch whisky.

Region: Islay | ABV: 43% | Tasting Notes: Smoke, Brine, Umami, Dried fruit

Made in Islay, Lagavulin's Distillers Edition scotch whisky has a distinctive, terroir-driven character: “beautiful, tarry rope and iodine and seaweed and peat,” describes Shanahan. “Smoked, phenolic earth and brine.” But the distiller threw a curveball for this special edition, transferring the scotch near the end of its 16 years of aging into barrels that once held Pedro Ximénez, “so you start to see this wonderful, new balance created in the arcing nuance of the sherry,” says Shanahan. “It’s a challenge for your palate—the peaty notes come across strongly in the nose, but once you sip it, you’re taken aback by the fruitiness. It’s one of my favorites.”

Best Cask-Strength

Laphroaig single malt scotch whiskey 10 year cask strength.

Region: Islay | ABV : 43% | Tasting Notes: Smoke, Grass, Earth, Heat

As more and more cask-strength whiskies enter the market, everyday tipples are muscling up. Undiluted for extra potency at Laphroaig, an Islay distillery, this decade-old scotch whisky has a proof of around 112 (may vary with each bottle). Aged in old bourbon barrels, barrier-filtered, and bottled straight out of the cask, it’s as smoky, grassy and earthy as its lighter 10-year counterpart, but with a bit of island brine and an extra burst of fire. "It’s absolutely phenomenal,” says Shanahan.

Ardbeg An Oa Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Region: Islay| ABV: 46.6% | Tasting Notes: Nuts, Stone fruit, Salinity, Smoke

The first addition to Ardbeg’s foundational range of scotches in a decade, this 2017 introduction is named after the Mull of Oa, a rocky peninsula on the Kilodalton coast where the distillery is located . This affordable bottle is as approachable as Islay whisky gets, thanks to the balance that the former sherry barrels bring to the salty smoke.

“They’re taking a super-peaty whisky and taming it with beautiful wine-cask,” says Shanahan. “There’s no age on it, but still, it’s brilliant.” It’s a great introduction to the island’s style.

Best Grain Scotch

Compass box hedonism whisky.

Region: Scotland | ABV: 43% | Tasting Notes : Coconut, Caramel, Toffee, Vanilla

A century ago, many Scottish whiskies were made with grains, including corn and wheat, but declined in popularity as big producers started focusing on single malt whiskies. Maverick whisky maker John Glaser rehabilitated it, searching out old grain barrels and blending them together in making Compass Box Hedonism.

H. Joseph Ehrmann, owner of San Francisco’s Elixir Saloon and co-founder of  Fresh Victor , calls it “a head-turner that can open your eyes to the pleasures of grain whisky.” With its coconut and caramel notes, “it tastes fun,” says Tardie. “Glaser’s doing a wonderful service for blended scotch.”

Best Splurge

Glenmorangie signet single malt whisky.

Region: Highlands | ABV : 46% | Tasting Notes: Coffee, Espresso, Raisins, Cinnamon

“[Glenmorangie] did something innovative,” says Tardie. “They toasted the barley so much that they call it a chocolate malt.”

Just as in beer making , where a chocolate malt adds mocha flavor to a porter or stout, this Highland scotch is rich in cocoa and espresso notes that only deepen over time. It’s made from the distillery’s oldest whisky—35- to 40-year-old scotch, aged in American white oak—which gives it a gravitas that Tardie appreciates. “As you sip it, and as the alcohol burns off,” he says, “there’s a strong characteristic of dark chocolate and coffee grinds.”

Best Single Estate

Glenmorangie the cadboll estate 15 year.

Region: Highlands | ABV : 43% | Tasting Notes: Wild herbs, Honey, Roasted nuts, Floral

The whiskies from Glenmorangie pair so well with food, Tardie remarks, "I'm convinced that the distiller is more of a fan of wine than whisky.”

Produced using estate-grown malted barley and matured 15 years in American oak ex-bourbon barrels, this lithe, floral scotch complements a variety of summertime meals. Open the whisky up with some water and try it with marinated grilled chicken, barbecued spare ribs, mint-laced salads or fresh berries for dessert. Its honey-blossom nose leads to vanilla and roasted nuts, a delightful herbaceousness, and a hint of orange.

Torabhaig Legacy 2017 Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Region: Isle of Skye | ABV : 46% | Tasting Notes: Salt, Honey, Smoke, Bitter herbs

Want to get in on the ground floor with a new distillery? Only the second-ever licensed facility on the Isle of Skye, Torabhaig opened in 2017, and its first release, this single malt blended from 100 select barrels, is young but delightful. The heavy peat character is tempered by a brisk sweetness from the pure island spring water used to make it and the Kentucky bourbon barrels used to age it. The honeyed vanilla char of the wood mingles with isle seagrass and iodine for a whisky made for sipping or stirring into drinks.

Best Peated

Talisker distiller's edition.

Region: Islay | ABV : 45.8% | Tasting Notes: Iodine, Earth, Smoke, Dried fruit

A classic Islay scotch subjected to a Highland treatment, i.e. secondary aging in Amoroso sherry butts, this bottle is, at first, “big, peaty, and smoky,” says Shanahan, but then, “you start to see this wonderful new balance created. You get these fruit kickers coming through without being too cloying, but they’re added to the peaty notes of the scotch from the isles.”

The sherry-cask fruitiness softens yet also highlights the peat, “reminding you of the earthy elements” in the scotch, he concludes. Don’t be afraid to pair this one with food. “Those heavily peated, oily, viscous scotches love seafood or meat,” says Tardie. “One of my favorite pairings is oysters and peated scotch.”

Best for Rusty Nail

Speyburn bradan orach single malt scotch.

Region : Speyside | ABV : 40% | Tasting Notes : Floral, Honey cake, Walnuts

For cocktails, says Tardie, you shouldn’t complicate things. “Stick with something on the cheaper side,” he says. But that doesn’t mean you can’t go for excellence and flavor.

Aged in ex-bourbon barrels, so it’s “not a sherry bomb” like some Speyside scotches are, this one is light and easy at a relatively low alcohol level. Floral on the nose with a bittersweet palate, “it’s not too powerful in any one direction,” says Tardie, “but it’s diverse enough to throw a cube in, sip neat, or put into a rusty nail.”

On the palate, scotch is a journey that replicates the making of the spirit, from the grain to the malt to the wash to the whisky, and GlenDronach Revival 15-year-old ( view on Reserve Bar ) exemplifies that layered, complex experience.

What is the difference between scotch and other whiskeys?

All scotch is whiskey (or, as they spell it in Scotland, whisky), but not all whiskeys are scotch. For whiskey to be scotch, it must be made in Scotland.

How is scotch made?

Like all whiskey, scotch is distilled from grain. In order to access its starch (which the yeast will convert into sugar during fermentation), the grain is malted, or soaked, so that it sprouts. The sprouted grain, or malt, is then dried in wood- or a peat-fired kiln. Next, it is milled, mixed with hot water, and fermented. The resulting “wash” is run through a copper-pot still, normally twice. The distillate that comes off the still is then aged in barrels, often for many years, to produce the deep, intense spirit we call scotch.

What are the different types of scotch?

Scotch made from malted barley at a single distillery is called single malt scotch. Blended scotches are produced by blending single malt with whisky made from other grains. That’s the most basic distinction in scotch. But it’s not the only one to consider. There’s also geography. Highland scotches tend to be sweeter than smoky island scotches made from peated malt. Finally, there are the barrels. Used sherry casks impart different flavors than bourbon barrels, and the number of years a scotch spends in the barrel distinguishes it too.

Why Trust Liquor.com?

Betsy Andrews  has been writing about wine and spirits for two decades. She has a soft spot for sherry-cask Speyside scotches, but she’s not beyond a smoky Islay. The most intriguing scotch drinking she’s ever done was at a vertical tasting of Macallans from the 1940s. Normally dried using wood fire, Macallan’s 1940s malt was peated because wood was scarce during World War II. It was a true taste of history.

The world’s best single malt scotch whisky—according to top shelf 2024.

The finalists are set for the Oscars of Spirits Competitions: Top Shelf 2024 comes to San Francisco, ... [+] October 5th-6th.

The stage is set for what has been referred to as the “Oscars of Spirit Competitions.” Back in April, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition convened for its annual multi-day judging. Since then, we’ve seen a steady rollout of all the Double Gold winners minted during that time. To receive the honor, multiple judges must score an expression 90-or-higher out of 100. There have been hundreds of examples across a dozen spirit categories. But now it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty.

We’ve been waiting patiently for the “Best In Show,” the absolute top title amongst all 2024 spirits entries. It will finally be revealed on the weekend of October 5th in SF at a ticketed event called Top Shelf . We’ve got your sneak peek at that industry extravaganza—including how to land yourself a seat, and an exclusive preview of the finalists for that coveted Best In Show crown, which are revealed at a grand gala on the second evening.

In the running for top spirit of the year are five separate expressions of single malt scotch. The distillery’s behind each one are entirely familiar to category enthusiasts, with some of the releases enjoying regular placement on US liquor store shelves. A couple of the others—not so much.

But enough throat clearing. The envelope please...

  • The GlenDronach Parliament Aged 21 Years Single Malt Scotch Whisky . A rich and robust sugarplum bomb, matured in a combination of Oloroso and PX sherry casks. This Highland producer has never messed around when it comes to Spanish seasoned oak and this one emphasizes all the hallmarks of that commendable cooperage. A perennial crowdpleaser that remains, mercifully, in abundance at a reasonable price point.
  • Tomintoul 21 Year Old . This Speyside malt, aged entirely in ex-bourbon barrels, is all about subtlety: caramel, vanilla and even a hint of coconut from nose to finish. A textbook example of the distillery’s signature approach, which has earned it the moniker, “The Gentle Dram.”
  • Talisker 45 Year Old Glacial Edge . Talisker oldest release to date is the ultimate offering from its Xpedition Oak series, in which wooden staves used in barrel finishes underwent a whole slew of over-the-top journeys to the farthest reaches of the planet. For this one, a single malt with more than four decades of age was entered into a cask that had been “ice-fractured” in the high Canadian Arctic. The spirits underlying waxiness holds here a complex assortment of salted toffee, seaweed and fresh cracked pepper. A real belter, bottled at 49.8% ABV. But there are only 2,455 bottles available worldwide. As a result, it’s far more elusive than the previous two entries on this list.
  • Tomatin 45 Highland Single Malt Scotch . Tomatin rarely registers on “expert” lists of top scotch distilleries. And that’s a real head scratcher. Because you should not sleep on this consistently impressive malt maker from the pastoral meadows just south of Inverness. The utter elegance of this well-aged Oloroso Sherry cask release is a convincing testimony as to why. It noses with tropical fruit, then brings treacle, over-ripened cherry, and marmalade to the palate, before finishing, dryly, in a wondrous wave of roasted cacao and coffee.
  • Aberlour 2010 Double Cask Matured. It’s almost unfair to even speak about this one, as it’s only available to members of an Australian membership service aptly called, The Whisky Club. In fact, it’s the first time in Aberlour’s 145-year history that its created a one-off, limited batch release exclusively for anyone. Those members were treated to a robust 13-year-old malt matured in both American oak and Spanish sherry butts, vibrantly fruity with threads of strawberry, orange zest and peppered peaches. Lucky them. For the rest of us, the standard Aberlour 12 is an admirable alternative. It’s also double matured (though bottled at 40% ABV as opposed to the special release’s 48%) and readily available for $56 a bottle.

And now, a little background on Top Shelf. The event was originally launched last year in Las Vegas by San Francisco Spirits Competition’s parent organization, The Tasting Alliance. 2024 marks the first time that it’ll be hosted in the competition’s home city. And it looks to be the biggest incarnation yet; a fusion of consumer and trade featuring multiple tasting rooms, dozens of master classes, and over 80 different brands with liquids on offer.

This time around those master classes will include one on small batch American whiskey hosted by Brother’s Bond co-founder Ian Somerhalder. There’s a seminar on the art of independent bottling from Richard Urquhart of Gordon & MacPhail. Leo Gibson, co-founder of Bhakta Spirits takes people on a journey through the Armagnac Category. And Ewan Morgan, national luxury ambassador for Diageo, will lead lucky attendees through some of the rarest scotches from formerly shuttered sites known as Ghost Distilleries.

VIP entrance, which include a token to attend one of these masterclasses—along with early access and gourmet food pairings—go for $300 per ticket . But they are currently available at 40% off by using the discount code, ‘WHISKEY40’ at checkout.

Does anyone have a copy of the bar menu that shows which liquor and drinks are included if you are staying in the Yacht Club? Thanks.

you could also check out the wonderful review of @Iluvcruising2 he gives a very detailed discription of everything regarding the yacht club!

As a Yacht Club guest, how are drinks with premium liquors handled in the Top Sail Lounge? Are you charged for the whole drink or just the "extra" for the premium liquor? Thank you,

You are charged the full amount. I like a Drambie in the evening and this was not included. I had to purchase this separately at the full amount.

That's great information. Thank you so much.

I am kind of surprised that MSC doesn't have at least 1 12 year old scotch available in the Yacht Club.

plucasana, Do you know how old this is?

As far as I can remember they do not have any malts they only have blended whisky (scotch):(

we were on the Divina April 16 and the menu looked the same. there are additional items that you can order (for a fee) I did not post these pages...

Mikesa1721

Yacht Club Scotch menu directly from the Yacht Club Bar Menu found in the desk of each stateroom:

Johnnie Walker Blue: $22.00

Chivas Regal Royal Salute 21Y: $16.00

Johnnie Walker Black Label 12Y: $6.75

Chivas Regal 12Y: $6.75

Dewar's Special Reserve 12Y: $6.75

I have seen all the different menus from the different bars on Divina. There are a ton of new cocktails I would like to try. Will they make anything in the Yacht Club or strictly what is on their menu?

The bartenders will make any cocktail you like,,,you may have to give the bartender the recipe sometimes though,,:)

When we were on Divina I asked for a B&B. They didn't have that in the Yacht Club...so they gave me two glasses...one of brandy and one of Benedictine. Worked for me!

Cool Cruiser

Am traveling with a friend Dec. 9 in the Yacht Club on Divina. He seems to be "addicted" to Fireball (Cinnamon Whiskey.) Anyone know if it's available in the Top Sail lounge and other bar venues? Thanks for any info!

Yes it is there.

Have fun - Divinia YC was great. Note you also get free gelato by pool and down off the atrium area.

Hello all. On the Divina end of September the list changed and included far more premium spirits. One I remember was Absolute Elyx vodka as our friends were drinking it.

I’m pretty sure there were single malts available for free. Not Glenlivet I would have remembered that as a guardian [emoji3].

If you see anything in other bars you like just let them know and ask nicely.

510581bd9f37b31de41410c0c1bde683.jpg

The prosecco at the black card party was the best I’ve ever had - never got to find out the make as they said it was a secret. We were having a joke at the time [emoji3]

You will have an amazing time I’m sure.

Many thanks for your speedy reply. He will be very happy!

DaCruiseBug

I'm a bit disappointed that Johnny Black isn't included. It's a basic scotch and a favorite of scotch drinkers.

I think it was on the new menu - there were several added to it.

Ah go ahead with the "Blue", you're on vacation ;)
