Hands-On The Rolex Yachtmaster II Regatta Timer, Ref. 116680
The rolex yacht-master ii: for those who consider themselves rolex enthusiasts, it's one of the most polarizing watches the crown produces. and yet there is more – much more – to this relative behemoth than meets the eye. we wanted to see what would happen if we met this technically unique, programmable flyback yacht timer chronograph on its own terms – read on to join us in our journey into one of the most idiosyncratically styled and mechanically sophisticated rolexes ever made..
I’m going to be completely honest: I was thoroughly prepared to have a negative reaction to this watch. Let’s face it; it’s a head-scratcher for the average Rolex/Submariner/GMT Master/Day-Date lover. First of all it’s pretty damned big. This is a 44 mm watch; it was born a 44 mm watch and it’ll die a 44 mm watch and that is nothing you or anybody else can do about it. You can have it in four different metals, and therefore, weights, ranging from steel (heavy) to gold/steel (heavier) to solid yellow gold (even heavier) to platinum and white gold combined (Schwarzeneggerian). It has a Cerachrom bezel in an absolutely screaming shade of blue, and it says YACHT-MASTER in giant letters right across the bottom third or so just to remove any lingering shade of doubt in the minds of any small-craft skipper for leagues around that they are in the presence of, well, the Master of a Yacht; it is not an introverted watch by any stretch of the imagination.
On top of everything else, the Yacht-Master II has a complication that pretty much no watch guy or gal ever can remember what do with, or has a perceived need for: it is a regatta timer, which is about as niche a complication as you can imagine. If you get a bunch of watch nuts together there is an excellent chance that you can get a more lucid explanation out of somebody for the Equation of Time than you can for a regatta timer (which is saying something) and it says something about the relative obscurity of the complication in general, and the relative niche-ness of the Yacht-Master II in particular, that when we got it into the office we had five people who live and breathe watches sitting around scratching our heads because no one could quite remember how the darned thing works. You put all those things together and you should have a watch that a dyed-in-the-wool horological classicist should thoroughly disdain. Right?
Actually, wrong. But let’s back up a bit.
First of all this is technically a very interesting watch and it’s worth your attention just on the level of interesting horological problem solving alone. A regatta timer is used by the skipper of a yacht to determine when their vessel is allowed to cross the starting line. Sailboats can’t just hover at the starting line of a yacht race, so what happens is that the racing committee establishes a countdown period during which the boats have to tack back and forth at the starting line without actually crossing; if you cross early, there is a penalty and if you are too cautious and cross late you will probably cross the finish line behind the boats that made it over the start line ahead of you. The countdown can be anywhere from five to ten minutes depending on the rules and race.
The Yacht-Master II is a programmable, flyback regatta timer that allows you to select a countdown interval of anything from one to ten minutes; in addition if you have started the countdown early or late, you can synchronize your watch “on the fly” when you hear the second of the two audible signals which are usually given at the start of a race (the signal to start the countdown comes first, and is usually followed by a warning signal closer to the start). Here’s how it works.
To set the countdown timer, you turn the bezel (Rolex calls it the "Command Bezel") a quarter turn to the left. This locks the lower chrono pusher and engages the setting mechanism for the triangular red countdown hand. You then unscrew the crown to its first position, and set the countdown hand – setting is one-way only but at 10 minutes, if you continue to turn the crown, the countdown hand will fly back to 1 and you can continue until you reach the desired number of minutes. When you’re done, you screw the crown back down, and turn the bezel back to its starting position, and you’re ready to regatta.
When the first gun (or other audible signal) is heard, you start the countdown . . . and that’s it. Now a really neat trick here is that you may, for some reason, have started your countdown too early, or too late. If that’s the case, all you have to do is wait for the second gun/signal, and hit the re-set button – the seconds hand will fly back to the zero mark and begin running again immediately; and the minute countdown hand will fly back to the nearest minute and likewise start counting down again. It’s the fact that the flyback is to the nearest minute, not to zero, that allows you to re-synch your countdown with the official countdown time, that gives the Yacht-Master II much of its utility, and much of its technical interest.
Okay, sure it’s technically interesting – but what about the aesthetics? All I can tell you is that, much to my very pleasant surprise, it was colossally fun to wear in every sense of the word. The fact that it is so unapologetically extroverted is actually the secret to its appeal. The weight isn't a problem (at least, not for me, and not in steel) and I found I could wear it all day without discomfort despite the overall size – partly thanks to the downward curvature of the lugs, which ensured a comfortable fit on my 7 inch wrist. The sharply contrasting deep blued hands, white dial, and red countdown hand – and, yes, that bright blue bezel – give the whole watch a suitably jaunty, nautical feel and make it a pleasure to look at (and at night visibility is very good; the lume on the hands and dial is almost startlingly bright).
Yes, this is an extroverted watch, but the quality of execution is very clean and very high (as is usually the case with Rolex) and it’s so much the opposite of what I’d ordinarily wear that having it on gave a feeling almost like a Walter Mitty fantasy coming to life. I felt like a guy who’s worn a blue suit and rep tie and driven a four door Merc his whole life, who somehow one day finds himself in a pair of ripped jeans and a beat up flight jacket, cruising down some winding secondary road on an old shovelhead Harley, and suddenly catches himself thinking, My god, all the wasted years. Ultimately I started to feel that objecting to the over-the-top-ness of the Yacht-Master II was silly, even narcissistic – if you go into a Joss Whedon actioner expecting a Lars Von Trier art-house tearjerker to unspool, you probably have only yourself to blame.
It is a rationally appealing uitlitarian tool watch? I'm not the one to ask. There is no way for me to evaluate what someone who actually owns a ’36 Herreshoff classic yacht and takes it on the regatta circuit would actually think of the Yacht-Master II, or whether they would find it useful. But I can tell you that it is actually a ton of fun to wear, and a big part of the reason is the very thing many object to at first – that this is a watch that pulls no punches when it comes to being larger than life.
It has that one most essential element for something to be a successful style exercise: the courage of its convictions, and if you think of yourself resolutely as a smaller-than-forty millimeter, tasteful restraint kinda guy, get one on your wrist for a surprisingly refreshing change of pace, and you can feel larger than life too.
The Rolex Yacht-Master II 116680 as shown, $18,750, 44 mm diameter case in 904L stainless steel. Bidirectional rotatable "Command Bezel" with blue Cerachrom insert; water resistance 100 meters/10 bar.

How to Use a Yacht-Master II
One of the more intricate Rolex models is the Yacht-Master II. We’ve been taking a closer look at how to set your Rolex as well as read the details on your dials to better understand your Rolex watch. Whether you want to understand the material it is made of or the story it has to tell, check out our more recent blog article releases here . But anyways, back to the Yacht-Master II. Let’s take a look.
The first thing to know is that you still set the time using the second position as we discuss here . The seconds hand is the small dial right above the 6 o'clock marker (with the 20, 30, 40 etc). In the below image, it's blue. But, that can change dependent on the material you choose for your Yacht-Master II. But, we're going to take a closer look at the intricate dial of the Yacht-Master II and its uses.
If this is the first time you have taken a closer look at the Yacht-Master II, you may be a bit overwhelmed. The Yacht-Master II is the first model to offer a Regatta Chronograph, which is a timing feature for Regatta timing or a Regatta sailing event which includes a 10-minute countdown. The Yacht-Master II allows different countdown timers for 0 - 10 minutes, which can be used anytime in normal life if you need to time something for 10 minutes.
To use the programmable Regatta countdown, rotate the bezel to position two until it clicks at about 1 o’clock. After, push down the bottom pusher to set the bezel. At this point, you will unscrew the water-tight crown and start rotating it clockwise. It will jump to every minute. Let’s say we are going to set it at 8 minutes. Screw down the water-tight crown, and then, rotate the bezel back to its original position, which will cause the bottom pusher to pop back up into place.
Press the top pusher to begin the timer. As the seconds hand moves clockwise, you will see the red arrow move to the next number (7 minutes in our example). To stop the timer, simply press the top pusher again. If you want to reset your timer to what you previously set it at (8 minutes), simply press the bottom pusher. Because the Regatta chronograph has a mechanical memory, by resetting the time with the bottom pusher, the triangle hand will return to the last minute it was initially set at before the countdown begins. This Rolex watch is the first watch to offer a bezel that is directly built into the movement - an innovation in Rolex design.
So, that’s a quick guide through a Yacht-Master II dial reading and use of the Regatta Chronograph. The Yacht-Master II bezel can have endless applications in everyday life as well - you don’t have to just be a sailor. Intricate in design but simple to use, is just what makes this such a work of art and perfection.

In the exclusive world of luxury timepieces, the Rolex Yacht-Master II stands as an example of opulence and precision engineering. Since its unveiling in 2007, it has not simply followed the footsteps of its prized predecessor but has charted a new course in luxury timepieces. This masterpiece blends the functional demands of regatta timing with the uncompromising quality synonymous with the Rolex name. Its signature feature, a programmable countdown with on-the-fly synchronization, showcases Rolex’s commitment to innovation, tailored specifically for the strategic demands of yacht racing.
As we look into its history, features, and most sought-after models, this guide is designed for those who appreciate the finer things in life. Whether you’re looking to invest in a luxury timepiece or expand an existing collection, the Rolex Yacht-Master II represents a pinnacle of horological craftsmanship, a tangible asset that surpasses time and trends. Read on to learn all there is to know about the Rolex Yacht-Master II. <> <>
A Brief History of the Rolex Yacht-Master II
The Rolex Yacht-Master II , introduced in 2007, marked a significant evolution in Rolex’s line of luxury watches, diverging from the brand’s typically conservative design ethos. It was a striking departure from its predecessor, the Yacht-Master, representing a bold new direction in both aesthetics and functionality.
The original models of the Yacht-Master II were the 18k yellow gold ref 116688 and the even more luxurious 18k white gold version with a platinum bezel, ref 116689. These models showcased a large, eye-catching design that was an immediate topic of debate among watch enthusiasts. While some admired its noticeable presence, others viewed it as a deviation from Rolex’s traditional design roots.
Responding to the changing economic landscape following the 2008 financial crash, Rolex expanded the Yacht-Master II collection in 2011 with the introduction of the ref. 116681, a more affordable Everose Rolesor model. This model featured a stainless steel case and outer bracelet links combined with an Everose gold winding crown, pushers, and central bracelet links. The collection further broadened its appeal in 2013 with the introduction of the all-steel version, ref. 116680, which also debuted a new caliber, the Cal. 4161, replacing the former Cal. 4160.
The only notable design update since its launch occurred in 2017, on the watch’s tenth anniversary. This update included changes to the hour markers and hands, namely the blue hour marker surrounds replaced with white gold, the 12 o’clock marker changed to an inverted triangle, and a taller marker at 6 o’clock. These changes aligned the Yacht-Master II more closely with the rest of Rolex’s Professional Collection, yet the changes were subtle enough that Rolex did not assign a new reference number.
Throughout its history, the Rolex Yacht-Master II has been distinguished by its unique regatta timer function, a testament to Rolex’s commitment to innovative and functional design. This feature, along with its distinctive aesthetic, has made the Yacht-Master II a popular, though somewhat polarizing, model among collectors and luxury watch enthusiasts.
Key Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master II
The Rolex Yacht-Master II stands out from the Rolex catalog with its massive round case and striking dial design. Here are the distinguishing features of the Rolex Yacht-Master II. <>
The Oyster Case at 44mm
The Yacht-Master II’s Oyster case measures a notable 44mm in diameter, contributing to the watch’s bold aesthetic and enhancing the dial’s legibility. This large size is practical for a sports watch, ensuring that crucial timekeeping information is always easily readable. <>
Ring Command System
One of the Yacht-Master II’s innovative features is the Ring Command System. This system integrates the bezel, crown, and internal mechanism, providing a seamless way to set and synchronize the watch’s various functions, including its unique regatta timer.
The Rolex Yacht-Master II allows the wearer to choose a countdown interval, ranging from one to ten minutes, using its programmable flyback regatta timer, displayed on the middle of the dial. Additionally, the watch can be synchronized “on the fly” with audible cues that are commonly given at the start of regatta races. <>
Cerachrom Insert Bezel (for steel, Rolesor, and yellow gold models)
For the steel, steel and Everose, and yellow gold models, the bezel features a blue Cerachrom insert, made from an exceptionally hard and virtually scratchproof ceramic. This material is impervious to UV rays and corrosion, ensuring the bezel’s color and finish remain pristine over time. <>
Platinum Bezel in sandblasted finish (for white gold model)
Meanwhile, the 18k white gold model boasts of a platinum Ring Command Bezel, with a sandblasted background and polished graduations. <>
Chromalight Display
The Chromalight display on the Yacht-Master II offers superior legibility in all lighting conditions, especially in the dark. This innovative feature ensures that the watch face is easily readable, which is vital during demanding activities like sailing. <>
Perpetual Caliber 4160 / 4161
At the core of the Yacht-Master II is the Perpetual Caliber 4160, and for later models the 4161, a self-winding mechanical movement developed entirely by Rolex. Known for its precision and reliability, these movements showcase of Rolex’s expertise in watchmaking, featuring a programmable countdown with a mechanical memory, crucial for timing in regattas.
Models from 2007 to 2013 use the Caliber 4160. In 2013, with the introduction of the stainless steel model, the Caliber 4161 was given additional refinements such as a crisper feel to the pushers and greater reliability. Both movements possess the blue Parachrom hairspring that protects the movement from shocks and offer 72 hours of power reserve.

Yachtmaster 2 Yellow Gold Review | Rolex 116688 Oyster 44mm – The Watch For Sailors
Yachtmaster 2 Yellow Gold Review. In this article, we cover everything about the Rolex Yacht-Master II Oyster Perpetual 44mm Yellow Gold (ref. 116688) iconic luxury watch.
Rolex is famous for producing all different types of purposeful sports watches. Two that will always come to mind when you speak of Rolex are the Submariner which was designed for divers, and the Daytona which was designed for drivers. The Submariner and Daytona have a long history; first releasing them in the 1950s and 1960s, respectively. A younger yet tremendously well-received Rolex, which we are discussing today, is the Yacht-Master model.
The first Yacht-Master model was released in 1992 (which is quite recent considering the life of Rolex).
The first Yacht-Master had a 39.5mm case and looked very similar to the Submariner. Since the release of the first Yacht-Master, Rolex has made a few different alterations to the Yacht-Master model, such as the 35mm Yacht-Master for those with smaller wrists, a women’s version, and the larger and most popular 44mm Yacht-Master 2.
Rolex has made the Yacht-Master line with many different variations of dials, bezels, and precious metals as well.
In 2007, Rolex released the Yacht-Master II. It came in two different types of metals – yellow gold and white gold. A few years later they introduced the Rose gold and steel bi-metal version. Then a few years after that they released the all steel Oyster steel version.
In this feature, we are discussing the Rolex Yachtmaster 2 Yellow Gold Variation, which is easily one of our favorite Rolex watches to date.
Rolex Yachtmaster 2 Yellow Gold 44m Oyster Case
The Yacht-Master 2 has a much larger, bolder case size compared to the original Yacht-Master. It is 44mm in diameter, which is over 4mm larger than the first Yacht-Master. There is a slight curve to the case which feels very nice. The sides and lugs have an exquisite polishing that shines amazingly.
Inside the case comes the most complicated complication in modern Rolex history.
History & Purpose behind the Rolex Yacht-Master 2 Design and Function – The Regatta Timer
Rolex has been close-knit with the sailing community since the 50s, so they decided to make a special watch to show that rich heritage.
Thus, the first Yacht-Master was made with sailors and boat racers in mind. However, it wasn’t until designing the Yacht-Master II that Rolex really began exploring what unique features they could offer to sailors. They wanted to differentiate the features from the Submariner to make the Yacht-Master a really special watch of its own.
Let’s first look at how Rolex makes the Yacht-Master 2 special specifically for sailors.
The chronograph in the Yacht-Master 2 was named the Regatta Chronograph. Regatta racing is a sporting event which consists of a series of boat or yacht races. Before each race, a sailor has around 10 minutes to prepare. So, Rolex made a piece where sailors could time that 10 minutes.
Rolex Yachtmaster 2 Movement & Ring Command Bezel
The bezel on the Yacht-Master 2 is one of our favorites. Yachtmaster 2’s bezel is a ceramic insert with yellow gold lettering and numbers. The blue on gold is such a complementing look.
Furthermore, the blue as the ocean bezel magnifies the inner ring for the countdown timer on the dial, as it is also blue, which makes it very easy to read. You know what is what on the dial as the blue bezel and inner ring is connected in both appearance and FUNCTION.
The Bezel is a lot different than a Submariner and GMT bezel. It’s not used for timing things or to tell the time. It’s an additional aid with a function that works with the movement of the watch. Hence its name – Ring Command Bezel.
The bezel of the Yachtmaster 2 commands the regatta timer. It’s another connection to the movement like the crown is. The Ring Command Bezel only rotates 90 degrees, whereas the other Rolex watches are 360 degrees rotatable.
The Yacht-Master is often compared to the Daytona. So, we will make a quick note of how the chronograph in the Yacht-Master is much different from the Daytona chronograph – On the Daytona chronograph, we are looking at a lapsed time, whereas the Yacht-Master 2, we are looking at countdown time.
How to use the Rolex Yacht-Master 2 Regatta Timer
Although the Yacht-Master 2 is the most complicated Rolex watch in history, it is very simple to use. This is the true beauty of it. They made the watch complicated in complications but simple in function.
The Regatta countdown timer is a feature that truly makes the Yacht-Master remarkable, with its unparalleled mechanical function that can be programmed from 1-10 minutes, allowing skippers to accurately time and follow every race’s official starting process. It’s not only useful for skippers of course; it can also be used for anything that you want to time under 10 minutes.
In 2007, when first releasing the Rolex Yacht-Master II, it was the only chronograph with a programmable countdown function. This was made possible by creating the Ring Command Bezel.
Setting up the Yacht-Master 2’s Regatta Timer:
- From the bezel’s standard position – the “YACHT-MASTER II” letter is at 6 o’clock – rotate the bezel counter-clockwise until its first click. The “1” on the bezel will be all the way north.
- Then, push the bottom pusher in. This will lock it in so it’s fully depressed.
- Now you can set the countdown timer, which is the red triangular hand to the desired countdown time – 1-10 minutes. You will see it move as you twist the crown clockwise.
- When you have the countdown hand set, rotate the bezel back to its starting position. You will notice the bottom pusher pops back out.
- Finally, you screw in the crown and it’s ready to start. When you want to start, you just push the top pusher, which is the traditional chronograph function. As soon as you push it, you will see the red second’s hand starts to rotate and the triangular countdown hand/timer has begun. To pause it, just press the top pusher again.
Rolex 116688 – The Pushers & Flyback Function
The Yacht-Master 2 has a very special flyback chronograph. So, while the chronograph is active, we can press the bottom pusher to bring the triangular countdown hand to its previous position.
However, it doesn’t just have a flyback function, it also has a ‘flyforward’ function as well, all in one. Here is how it works…
If the second’s hand is on the right-hand side of the watch (right of the 12 and the 6 o’clock), it will return to whatever minute you were previously on. But, if the second’s hand is on the lefthand side, it will fly forward a minute.
This means if the watch was originally set to 6 on the inner countdown timer, then when you push the bottom pusher and the second’s hand is on the righthand side, the triangular hand will flyback to the 6. If it’s on the lefthand side (pass 30 seconds) it will flyforward to the 5. It will then immediately continue counting down.
If you want to reset it to the original start time, press the top pusher then press the bottom pusher. However, if you wanted to reset it to a different starting countdown time, you would need to go through the same process, starting at point 1 above.
Nothing beats the simplicity and function of the Regatta timer’s flyback and fly forward. It truly is a really cool feature, especially if you appreciate horology. It’s simple to use, but it is very complicated to make it. Only an expert horology company like Rolex would be able to create something this innovative. They make it as easy as the push of a button, literally.
Nevertheless, it’s not something that many people actually use as it’s intended, which is regatta racing. However, owners of the Yacht-Master 2 can find a use of the flyback countdown timing one way or another.
What we really appreciate the most is the history and design behind this special timepiece.
Yachtmaster 2 Yellow Gold Oyster Bracelet & Clasp
The bracelet is a standard Oyster bracelet with polished center links and brushed outer links. It’s a very classic sports Rolex bracelet, so you can’t go wrong with it. This one is made of yellow gold, and we think it’s absolutely beautiful. The yellow gold compliments the white dial and blue bezel impeccably.
The clasp is the standard Oyster clasp. It has an easy link that extends out to 5mm. This is very useful as your wrist expands when in warmer temperatures. Oyster clasps are extremely well engineered. They are simple, secure, and they feel very solid.
Rolex Yachtmaster 2 Dial – Nautically Inspired
As a whole, the dial and bezel have a very nautical feel to it. Of course, Rolex intended it to appear this way. The dial looks to have been inspired by a gauge on a yacht, and the blue bezel and inner timer are reminiscing of the ocean.
On the dial, you have the small seconds in a yellow gold subdial. The sub dial has a brushed finish with a channeled effect and a navy hand.
Both the chronograph seconds and chronograph minutes have red accents, which lets you know they work together.
The white dial brings it all together beautifully. It has a satin-like finish, and it’s a white like the color of the side of a boat.
The dial is one of the best parts of the watch. It’s superb in design and as much as it has going on, it was so well done that nothing feels cluttered and it’s easy as can be on the eyes.
Rolex Yachtmaster 2 Weight & Size
In terms of the weight and size of the Yacht-Master 2, it is quite a big watch. A 44mm diameter for a watch case is large, but that was what it was meant to be – a big, brash watch. In regards to thickness, it’s fairly thick, but not as thick as you’d image a “big” watch being.
Personally, we love big watches, but thickness or height isn’t necessarily the big part we like. We like the kind of big that covers the wrist, not the tall kind of big.
So, we love the fact the Yachtmaster 2 case, even with its complicated regatta chronograph inside, isn’t very tall.
Yachtmaster 2 Yellow Gold ON THE WRIST:
The Yachtmaster 2 is a big watch but it doesn’t actually sit super big on the wrist. This is due to the depth of the watch, as we mentioned above. It’s not extremely heavy or anything either, but it does have some nice weight to it.
The watch is a bit top heavy due to the size of the case. Nonetheless, it is still extremely comfortable and if you wanted to wear it every day, you would never have an issue with the weight of the Yacht-Master 2.
If you want a watch that is an attention grabber, this is the one. The Yacht-Master is just out there with its bright white dial on an exquisite yellow gold case and bracelet. The blue bezel pops and screams for attention, yet it’s still so sophisticated in appearance that one would never consider it gaudy. It is a flashy watch, but it in the best way possible. No other Yacht-Master 2 will get attention like the Yacht-Master II Yellow Gold version.

Ever wondered how to set a Rolex Yacht-Master II?
It has been said that the Yacht-Master II is an extremely difficult watch to operate and certainly more than a little complicated to grasp at first instance. Talk in the office here has recently turned to how to do this; it seems that this highly complicated watch is causing frustration when customers come to ask “how does it work?â€
For those watch aficionados amongst us a single demonstration will probably be sufficient to get to grips with the workings of this watch but for the rest of us I have made it my mission to formulate a guide to working this complex timepiece… with a little help from Rolex themselves of course!
Unlike the original Yacht-Master, the Yacht-Master II has an extremely complex and innovative new movement with a countdown timer which can be programmed to start between one and ten minutes in order to accommodate regattas with varying start sequences. Rolex have been very clever here because the value is actually ‘remembered’ so when the counter time is reset the countdown hand will return to the last programmed value; a very impressive feat!
The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph is the first watch to have a programmable countdown feature with a mechanical memory, which gives it the advantage of being able to be set according to the countdown time of each regatta. Intended for yachting lovers as well as for the experienced skipper, it is an indispensable tool at the starting line of regattas.
- Make certain that the countdown is stopped
- Turn the Ring Command Bezel 90° counter-clockwise. The ‘Yacht-Master II’ inscription should be aligned with the crown.
- Press the reset pusher – the pusher remains depressed.
- Unscrew the winding crown to position one (the same as for manual winding).
- Turn the winding crown, in the winding direction, to set the desired minute. At ten minutes if the user continues to turn the crown the hand will switch back to zero.
- Return the bezel to its original position by rotating it 90° clockwise. This returns the reset pusher to its initial position and unlocks the start/stop pusher.
- Push down and screw down the winding crown.
To start the countdown simply push the top pusher (1) – to stop press the pusher again.
To synchronise the countdown simply press the reset pusher (3) briefly and firmly. The minute countdown hand repositions itself to the nearest minute, while the second’s countdown hand returns to 0.
To reset the countdown push down the top pusher (1) to stop the countdown and then press the bottom pusher (3)to reset.
This 42mm watch houses a complete in-house movement from Rolex – the 4160. The result of 35,000 development hours, and 360 individual components, is a watch that is technically brilliant. A column wheel that extends through the main plate connects both sides of the movement enabling perfect synchronisation between the different elements of the countdown. As a result racers can now set their watch to the exact regatta starting sequence
For those who would like something visual to go with these instructions then I recommend visiting the Rolex Website .

What Is the Purpose of a Yachting Timer?
There are a lot of watchmaking complications out there that aren’t particularly useful for the “mass market” – moonphase complications in particular, but also others. A yachting timer (like the Rolex Yacht-Master II ) for example, is designed to aid in the countdown to the start of a regatta (a yacht or boat race). Oh, I’m sorry. You don’t spend your weekends competing in regattas? That’s ok though, as its function also has other applications in the real world (but more on that later).
The Purpose of a Yachting Timer
When competing in a regatta, getting off of the starting line is a bit of a convoluted process. Powered by wind, there is no “mashing the throttle” from a standstill to get things moving. Thus, a running start of sorts needs to be undertaken, which means a countdown takes place as boats jockey for position in relation to the starting line.
Typically a 5-minute interval (with some variance), the yachting timer complication – also called a regatta timer – was created specifically for timing these countdowns. A sound is typically triggered to announce the starting of this countdown, giving competitors warning to start their timers and prepare to launch out of the starting gates. If you want to dig deeper into that, Cruising World has a great “Racing 101” feature, but you probably get the fundamentals by now at the very least.
Sure, a small percentage of us might get out on a sailboat from time to time. Of that contingent, a few might actually even compete here and there. The thing is, you really don’t need to be out on the water to make use of a yachting timer. Just think for a second about all of the little tasks in your daily lives that could benefit from a short-run countdown timer. Steaks on the BBQ, your child’s time-out, that chat with a work colleague that always feels like it goes on forever (“oh, sorry Susan, I’ve really gotta run”), short intervals of billable time in the office, time remaining in a presentation; if you think about it long enough, you’ll certainly come up with a few more too. You might not need/use it every day, but at the very least, it makes for an interesting alternative to the conventional chronograph.
Famous Regatta Timers
Over the years, a number of brands (other than Rolex) have gotten into the category, especially during the ‘70s. Heuer’s catalog included both the Skipper and later the Heuer Regatta. The former used a 15-minute chronograph sub-dial, with each 5-minute increment/slice being painted a different color – a method both simple and effective.
The Heuer Regatta on the other hand is slightly different. 5 circular cut-outs on the dial change color minute by minute as they count down. Rather than a conventional chronograph setup, the Regatta is more like an Omega Chronostop in the sense that the timer is always running, yet you can instantaneously reset your 5-minute interval on the fly by using its pusher at 2 o’clock.
Beyond these two noteworthy pieces, there were also a number of pretty obscure offerings from Lemania, Aquastar, Memosail, and others, but of course, the big modern entry to the category comes from Rolex, and she’s a complicated thing to say the least. The Rolex Yacht-Master II is hands-down the most interesting, complex, and cleverly engineered yachting timer on the market thus far. Powered by the Rolex Caliber 4161 movement, and good for a power reserve of 3 days, its countdown timer is actually programmable in intervals between 1 and 10 minutes. Confused? Here’s how it works.
First, unscrew the crown (without pulling it out), and rotate its external Ring Command bezel counter-clockwise till you reach an end stop. This is the “programming position.” From here, using the reset pusher at four o’clock allows you to move the oversized countdown timer hand between the 1 and 10 indices on the inner timing track of its bezel. Next, you simply reposition the bezel and screw its crown back down, and from this point onwards resetting the timer on the Yacht-Master II will reset it to the preset interval. At this point, whether you want to time the five-minute countdown to the start of a regatta, or the two minutes per side you want to grill that thick-cut steak for, you’re all set.

If you could not find your watch model (or caliber) in this table, you may determine your ROLEX winding mode on a trial basis. You should select the combined winding mode (CW+CCW) and the minimal number of turns per day (TPD). Then place your watch into the winder and check after a few days how accurate your watch shows the time. If it runs behind, it is necessary to increase the number of TPD by one step.

Divers from the Marine Rescue Division at Dubai Ports Police have recovered a sedan that plunged off the dockside in the Al Jaddaf area at Bur Dubai. In a video released on Monday, September 16, several officers and marine rescue divers can be seen salvaging the vehicle at the accident site.
The car skidded off the pier in the Al Jaddaf area and plunged into the water, crashing into a parked yacht. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn and sink to the bottom of the sea.
The two young men, the driver and passenger, reportedly survived the incident. They managed to escape the submerged car through its shattered windshield, which broke after collision with the yacht.

Col Ali Abdullah Al Naqbi, Deputy Director of the Ports Police Station, said that the Command and Control Centre in the General Department of Operations received a report at 2.20pm about a car that had collided with a yacht and fallen into the water, with two people inside.
Col Ali said, "Marine rescue patrols, maritime security units, and a local area patrol quickly rushed to the scene. Fortunately, the two young men had escaped from the car, and their safety was ensured, with no one else found inside."
The divers went to the seabed, assessed the car's position, and secured it with ropes. Marine rescue divers then deployed a recovery crane, ensuring all safety protocols were followed, to retrieve the heavily tinted white sedan from the water and onto the dockside.
Captain Abdul Rahman Bourguiba, Head of the Marine Rescue Division, reiterated the importance of vehicle maintenance, urging motorists to regularly check the condition of their vehicles and conduct routine inspections. He stressed the responsibility of being cautious while driving, following all safety measures, and strictly adhering to traffic laws and regulations, including adhering to speed limits.
He also encouraged the public to contact the Command and Control Centre in the General Department of Operations at 999 for emergencies and at 901 for non-emergency situations. Additionally, he advised marine users to take advantage of the 'Sail Safely' service that reports marine incidents and shares locations promptly.
