Dubai’s marinas have hosted some of the world’s most impressive superyachts, owned by tycoons, royal families and celebrities. Notable superyachts spotted in U.A.E. waters over the past season (October 2023 to June 2024) include the 141-meter Nord , estimated to be worth US$500 million, and the 136-meter Flying Fox , featuring two helipads and the first cryosauna ever installed on a yacht.

The annual Dubai International Boat Show, which has been pivotal in shaping the emirate’s maritime ambitions for the last 30 years, continues to showcase the finest fleet of superyachts, attracting fans, manufacturers and industry experts from around the globe. This year, the show recorded a 30% jump in visiting superyachts and significant high-value sales, cementing its position as a global yachting hub.

With its strategic location, world-class yachting infrastructure and seamless entry procedures, as well as comprehensive commercial and private aviation connectivity, Dubai is rapidly gaining popularity as an ideal yachting destination for the luxury traveler.

Rich Maritime Heritage

The U.A.E.’s maritime heritage dates back thousands of years, long before the discovery of oil. From pearling and fishing to shipbuilding and trading, the maritime industry served as a lifeline for the community and contributed significantly to the local economy. From a small trading port, Dubai has transformed into a global city with top-notch infrastructure, a vibrant economy and a high standard of living. In fact, the “Pearl of the Gulf” emerged as the leading city in the Middle East in the Global Power City Index 2023, securing a place in the top 10, along the likes of London, New York, Tokyo, Paris, Singapore, Amsterdam and Seoul.

Today, while traditional dhows (wooden sailing boats) still ply the Dubai Creek, offering tourists a glimpse of Dubai’s rich maritime history, a growing number of superyachts are docking at Dubai’s luxury marinas, positioning the emirate as a premier yacht tourism destination.

Yachting Crucial To Tourism Economy

Under the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the U.A.E. and Ruler of Dubai, the emirate has unveiled a comprehensive 10-year economic framework, referred to as D33, which aims to double its economy by 2033 and secure its position as one of the top three global cities for business and leisure, and the best city to visit, live and work in.

The tourism sector plays a crucial role in this economic expansion. In 2023, Dubai welcomed a record 17.5 million international visitors, representing a 19.4% increase from 2022. This growth trend has persisted into 2024, with 9.31 million visitors recorded from January to June, up 9% from the same period in 2023. Dubai has bagged several accolades along the way, including the No. 1 global destination ranking in Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards 2024 for the third consecutive year, making it the only city to achieve this milestone.

All this bodes well for the yachting industry, a key pillar of Dubai’s tourism economy and central to the diversification of the tourism sector. “Yachting contributes to Dubai’s economic growth not only via direct expenditure from docking vessels, but also through attracting new audiences to the city, including investors and high net worth individuals,” says Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, part of Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism.

The yachting industry is central to the diversification of the tourism sector, contributing to Dubai’s economic expansion.

The yachting industry in the U.A.E. continues to enjoy remarkable growth. From October 2023 to June 2024, 64 yachts over 28 meters visited the U.A.E., the highest number ever recorded, showing a 12% increase over the previous season, according to the U.A.E Yachting Market Insights 2024 published by IR Yachts. The report also found that larger yachts are visiting the U.A.E.

To support the growth of the industry, the government has continued to invest significantly in developing its maritime infrastructure. For example, a road infrastructure project to improve access to Dubai Harbour is in the works. This AED431 million (US$117 million) project will see the construction of a two-lane bridge spanning 1.5 kilometers, extending from Sheikh Zayed Road to Dubai Harbour. When completed, it will improve the flow of traffic and reduce travel time from 12 minutes to three.

World-Class Infrastructure And Services

Dubai’s world-class maritime infrastructure, including 5,000 berths across 22 marinas, supports a thriving yachting ecosystem, and significant investment has led to the development of luxury services such as waterfront entertainment and state-of-the-art maintenance and repair facilities, ensuring a seamless experience for yachting enthusiasts. Popular marinas include Mina Rashid Marina , Dubai Harbour Marinas , Bulgari Marina and Nakheel Marinas . Well-placed fueling stations are available across the city’s marinas, allowing for convenient refueling for longer voyages. All this is complemented by the city’s abundance of attractions, cosmopolitan atmosphere, diverse gastronomy, privacy and unique lifestyle experiences. Additionally, yacht owners have greater peace of mind knowing that they can safely navigate around Dubai and the Gulf region, as the U.A.E was named the second safest country in the world in 2023 with a safety index of 84.9.

“The outlook for Dubai’s yachting industry is increasingly optimistic, and significant investments are being made to enhance maritime infrastructure and facilities, in addition to streamlining industry regulations,” says Kazim.

Key developments include the expansion of Nakheel Marinas Dubai Islands, which will accommodate 13 superyachts and house 248 wet berths for vessels up to 47 meters and 40 dry berths for trailers up to 20 meters. Mina Rashid will be transformed into a luxurious waterfront residential community , and anchorage points will be expanded across the emirate.

He adds: “Partnerships and collaborations between key stakeholders, a seamless arrival experience for foreign-flagged vessels, and visa options to simplify entry procedures are being prioritized to appeal to yacht owners from a diverse range of markets. Dubai is also positioning itself as a leading hub for the superyacht industry, with a focus on attracting key international players to establish offices, branches and manufacturing facilities here, further boosting our local economy.”

Sailors met by family on dry land after yacht rescue in 'horrendous conditions'

A man and a woman have returned to dry land after being rescued from a yacht on the New South Wales South Coast.

Brett and Lisa were saved during a multi-agency rescue on Tuesday morning, before docking in Sydney on Tuesday.

Lisa, 48, said she was feeling "safe and secure and happy" after the ordeal.

A man and woman have expressed gratitude for being back on dry land after they were rescued from a stricken yacht on the New South Wales South Coast on Tuesday. 

Brett, 60, and Lisa, 48, were found "safe and sound" about 170 nautical miles east of Nowra at around 7:30am.

"I am so pleased to say that this rescue operation has been a resounding success," NSW Marine Area Command Acting Superintendent Siobhan Munro said.

The rescue mission was launched off the South Coast after a distress beacon was activated about 1pm on Monday.

At the time, the yacht was 85 nautical miles from Sydney, and had drifted 160 nautical miles offshore by the time emergency services reached Brett and Lisa.

"That's how strong the winds were and how fast it was, pushing the vessel away," NSW Marine Area Command Sergeant Ryan Spong said of the conditions.

The 19-metre vessel, Spirit of Mateship, had experienced mechanical failure and was taking on water, Ben Flight from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said on Tuesday morning.

It's believed Brett and Lisa left Jervis Bay on Sunday or Monday for Sydney, NSW Marine Area Command Chief Inspector Anthony Brazzill said.

On Tuesday, a multi-agency operation retrieved the pair "in some quite horrendous conditions", Sergeant Spong added.

The pair were taken on board NSW Water Police vessel Nemesis, and thanked everyone involved in their return to Sydney.

Lisa said she was feeling "safe and secure and happy" despite not getting much sleep last night.

Brett said the waiting was "alright" and that the boat was "safe" and "more than seaworthy".

"It was more we were tired, seasick, we couldn't continue any further," he said.

"That was a decision we made to call ... it could have got worse ... I think we made the right decision."

The Nemesis passed through Sydney Heads just before 6pm, before the pair were met by family in Balmain half an hour later.

Spirit of Mateship, which has raced in several Sydney to Hobart yacht races, was abandoned at sea.

This new guard is taking over historical icons and throwing up gleaming towers, and it’s upping the ante on amenities, too. A posh afternoon tea is no longer enough, it seems; now, five-stars come with signature scents, subterranean spas, museum-worthy art and long-stay residences. Rooftop bars, a rarity here a decade ago, are now seemingly obligatory (the one at the Emory wins for views, with everything from Big Ben to Battersea Power Station in its sights). But there’s still room for the occasional independent hotel, like the Broadwick, a maximalist love letter to the owner Noel Hayden’s hotelier parents and the creative Soho of the ’90s in which he came of age. “It’s a bit of a sensory overload,” Hayden says. Naturally, there’s a rooftop bar there, too.

Grand Hotel Bellevue

Paddington, an area short on upscale hotels, is a smart choice for French brand Lignée Hotels’ first property outside France. A decades-long regeneration, the new Elizabeth Line, linking Paddington to Heathrow and East London, and nearby attractions like Kensington Gardens and Little Venice make it a good base for exploring the capital. Grand Hotel Bellevue , whose sister hotels include the soignée La Maison Favart and Le Narcisse Blanc Hotel & Spa in Paris, occupies a five-story Victorian townhouse on elegant Norfolk Square. The Paris-based, Milanese architect Fabrizio Casiraghi has combined a bold, earthy color palette with bespoke furniture and antiques for the interiors, and collaborated with the American fashion designer Emily Adams Bode Aujla to design the hotel’s reception and Pondicherry Bar. A tribute to the duo’s love of India, the bar has bold yellow walls hung with tapestries featuring elephants and tigers; its cocktail list includes Masala Chai Iced Tea, with spiced rum and crème de pêche. The smallest, single rooms are designed to feel like boat cabins, with dark wood walls and brass light fixtures, while the 375-square-foot Grand Norfolk Suite has a free-standing tub, high ceilings and views of Norfolk Square. Bathrooms are stocked with products by perfumer-to-the-royals, Floris, and there’s a fitness studio with Nohrd equipment. Rooms from about $345 a night.

Raffles London at the OWO

The 120-room Raffles London , which opened in fall 2023, is a spectacular revival of the Old War Offices, a turreted, Edwardian Baroque icon in the middle of the city’s royal and political landmarks. The 760,000-square-foot stone-clad building served as the offices for leading politicians, including Winston Churchill, and was the birthplace for the British intelligence services MI5 and MI6 — it inspired Ian Fleming’s James Bond series. Intricate mosaic floors, marble staircases, acres of oak paneling and eye-popping chandeliers have been meticulously restored, and a four-story, 27,000-square-foot subterranean Guerlain spa added. Near the entrance to the Whitehall Ballroom hangs the 1921 painting “Naval Officers of World War I” by Arthur Stockdale Cope, on loan from The National Portrait Gallery. Of the nine restaurants and bars, three overseen by the three-Michelin-star Argentine chef Mauro Colegreco, the must-visit is the Spy Bar, a speakeasy with the Aston Martin stunt car from “No Time to Die” (the OWO was featured in the 2021 film) as a centerpiece and Bond’s favorite cocktail, the Vesper Martini, on the menu. Rooms from about $1,440 a night.

A glass-and-steel box topped with sail-like structures on the edge of Hyde Park, Maybourne Group’s (Claridge’s, The Connaught, The Berkeley) first all-suite hotel, the Emory , unveiled earlier this summer, was designed by the late Richard Rogers, one of the architects of the Pompidou Center, and Ivan Harbour of the RSHP firm. The “quiet luxury” aesthetic is strong; the textured public spaces, with polished copper light fixtures, leather upholstery and Damien Hirst artworks, are by Remi Tessier, known for his private jet and yacht interiors, and include a trio of Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurants. The suites and 3,200-square-foot penthouse, by six additional designers, feature luxe materials like Calacatta viola marble and ash wood, and a palette of soft, neutral colors inspired by Hyde Park. The four-story, subterranean Surrenne spa hosts classes by Tracy Anderson. The Emory’s rate includes a private ride from the airport, a 24-hour personal assistant, breakfast and the contents of the not-so-mini bar, where you might find a jug of iced Pimm’s and English strawberries in summer. Rooms from about $2,100 a night.

Broadwick Soho

The passion project of the gaming entrepreneur Noel Hayden, who grew up making toast and performing magic tricks in his parents’ seaside hotel, Broadwick Soho is the wild card of London’s new hotel scene. Hayden’s brief to the interior designer Martin Brudnizki was “your eccentric godmother’s townhouse meets Studio 54.” The bell boys look circus-ready in leopard-print blazers; inside, there’s contemporary art everywhere, including works by Francis Bacon, Bridget Riley and Andy Warhol, many of them from Hayden’s personal collection. The hotel’s low-lit restaurant, Dear Jackie, named for Hayden’s mother, has red silk walls hung with hand-painted plates, patterned booths and refined Italian food — don’t miss the ricotta tortelloni with broad beans. The seventh-floor bar-restaurant, Flute, dials up the maximalism with cork walls and mirrored ceilings and has a wraparound terrace. Bedrooms are low-key in comparison, with a soothing palette of blues, greens and pinks, and Soho rooftop views from floor-to-ceiling windows — though bespoke brass cocktail bars in the shape of elephants bring a hint of kitsch to the suites. Rooms from about $790 a night .

Of the many pedigreed hotels that have landed in Chelsea in the past few years, none is as opulent as At Sloane, a sibling to Paris’s Hotel Costes, which opened in December. The hotel is a renovation of a 19th-century red-brick mansion designed by the architect Edwin Thomas Hall, who created the mock-Tudor Liberty department store. The interiors, by Francois-Joseph Graf, the designer of the toile de Jouy-decked La Mirande hotel in Avignon, France, mix monochrome hues with shades of crimson, graphic rugs, checkerboard tiles and textiles by Morris & Co and Pierre Frey. More than 1,000 black-and-white photographs of stars including the original Sloane Ranger, Princess Diana, line the stairs to the 30 guest rooms. There, timber paneling opens into secret walk-in wardrobes, minibars and exquisite bathrooms modeled on the ones Graf remembers from childhood stays at Claridge’s. On the building’s new sixth floor is a guests-only restaurant with turn-of-the-century furniture by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Edward William Godwin and Christopher Dresser, and shelves stacked with hundreds of Chinoiserie vases. Rooms from about $795 a night.

Mandarin Oriental Mayfair

Mandarin Oriental Mayfair , the brand’s second, smaller London hotel, opened in June in a new build with a contemporary, red-brick-clad townhouse exterior on Hanover Square, Mayfair’s first square when it debuted in the 1700s. An expanse of green Ming marble greets guests when they enter, a nod to the company’s heritage and nearby green spaces (Berkeley Square and Green Park are neighbors). The Asian influence continues in the 50 rooms and suites (there are also 77 private residences), with House of de Gournay hand-painted silk wallpaper; stone-colored furniture and rugs; and pops of emerald, maroon or turquoise on cushions and headboards. The Korea-born, Colorado-bred chef Akira Back has made his UK debut with a namesake restaurant — look out for his trademark ‘AB Tuna Pizza’, with umami aioli, tuna sashimi, micro shiso and truffle oil — and Dosa, a 14-seater, counter-style restaurant; a rooftop bar opens later this year. It wouldn’t be a Mandarin Oriental without a standout spa; this one has an 80-foot swimming pool and 22-minute treatments for guests short on time. Rooms from about $1,400 a night.

Department of Homeland Security Announces $380 Million in Additional Funding to Communities Receiving Migrants

DHS continues to provide unprecedented resources to support border & interior communities

WASHINGTON – Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), announced the allocation of over $380 million through the Shelter and Services Program (SSP). Through the SSP, DHS directly supports communities that are providing critical support such as food, shelter, clothing, acute medical care, and transportation to noncitizens recently released from DHS custody and awaiting their immigration court proceedings. FEMA, in coordination with CBP, is administering these SSP grants with state, local and tribal governments as well as nongovernmental organizations to help prevent the overcrowding of short-term CBP holding facilities. This funding augments the $259.13 million in SSP grants that DHS distributed in April 2024 .

This grant cycle provides a new opportunity through a competitive program and builds on the support being provided to communities on the border and in the interior. Last year, more than $780 million awarded through SSP and the Emergency Food and Shelter Program – Humanitarian Awards (EFSP-H) funding in Fiscal Year 2023 went to organizations and cities across the country.

DHS efforts to manage and secure our borders in a safe, orderly, and humane way include support for communities, as well as strengthened consequences for those without a legal basis to remain and an expansion of lawful pathways that have helped reduce the number of encounters from specific populations. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP)’s operational report for July 2024 shows a significant decline in migrant encounters during the first full month after a Presidential Proclamation issued June 4, 2024, by President Biden to temporarily suspend the entry of certain noncitizens across the southern border. U.S. Border Patrol encounters in July were 32% lower than in June 2024 and were the lowest monthly total along the southwest border since September 2020. July’s total numbers between ports of entry are also lower than July 2019, and lower than the monthly average for all of 2019, the last comparable year prior to the pandemic.

Due to the substantial demand that exceeds the limited SSP program funding authorized by Congress, not all requests can be fulfilled.

Fire at Moscow refinery contained, TASS reports

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A fire caused by an overnight drone attack at the Moscow Oil Refinery has been contained, the TASS state news agency reported on Sunday, citing emergency services.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said debris from several Ukrainian-launched drones targeted the Moscow refinery, sparking a fire at a "separate technical room" at the plant.

Bayesian superyacht sinking: Post-mortems carried out on lawyer and wife

Seven people died when the luxury vessel capsized off Sicily after being hit by a violent storm last month.

The first post-mortem examinations on two victims of the Bayesian superyacht sinking have been carried out.

Seven people died when the luxury boat, owned by British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, capsized off the coast of Sicily , Italy, after being hit by a sudden, violent storm in the early hours of 19 August.

US lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, the first victims to undergo a post-mortem, were found to have drowned.

Mr Morvillo was in Mr Lynch's legal team in a fraud case involving the 2011 sale of Autonomy to Hewlett Packard in a $11bn (£8.3bn) deal.

The British entrepreneur, 59, who co-founded Autonomy, was acquitted in June and he had organised the yacht trip to celebrate his legal victory.

The bodies of six of the victims, including Mr Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and passengers Jonathan and Judy Bloomer, were discovered in the wreck during a five-day search operation by divers.

The yacht's chef Recaldo Thomas was found dead near the boat the day after the disaster happened.

Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, survived the sinking, along with 14 other people.

The post-mortem examinations were carried out by coroners designated by Palermo prosecutors, who confirmed the results.

Post-mortems are planned on Wednesday on the bodies of Mr Bloomer, who was the chairman of Morgan Stanley's London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife Judy.

They are pending for Mr Lynch, his daughter and Mr Thomas.

Prosecutors are investigating the captain and two crew members for possible responsibility in connection with the sinking.

Meanwhile, American tech giant Hewlett Packard has said it is to continue with legal proceedings "through to their conclusion" to seek up to £3bn in damages from Mr Lynch's estate in the UK.
