Sailing in the Bay of Islands
- March 19, 2018
Home » Sailing in the Bay of Islands
Sailing is the art of moving or travelling over water by use of sails. The Bay of Islands is favoured as a sailing destination as it’s protected by multiple islands offering good anchorage, has an exceptional climate, is well set up for marine activities, and completely stunning.
The bay of islands is one of the best places in New Zealand to experience sailing and with the multiple islands and hidden coves, all sailors who come here from Captain Cook to present day tourists, can see why.
Vanessa McKay from day sailing charter company, Carino Wildlife Cruises, says sailing in the Bay is quite simply good for the soul.
“ For us it is all about the smiles when we turn the engines off and the wind catches the sail. We can almost see our guests take a deep breath and relax into the motion. For us, sailing is good for the soul and the planet.”
Best sailing in the Bay of Islands?
The sailing options in the Bay of Islands are numerous, from sailing catamarans to mono hulls, day sailing and cruises to overnight, skippered or sail yourself plus learn to sail options.
See our full list of companies specialising in sailing here .
Lets go though you options in more details
Sailing with a skipper
When you do an introductory Google search, there are so many sailing options in the area it may seem overwhelming.
We’ve got some recommendations below from locals and loads of reviews and interviews but do your own research as well.
Consider the following:
- Quality and maintenance of the vessel, including safety equipment
- Experience of the skipper is key!
- Most charters will supply lunch (ask what’s on the menu)
- Check if they will cater to your requirements – do you want to learn as you go? Are you expected to ‘pull your weight’, or just lie back and enjoy the ride? Will they stop off on the Island you want to visit?
Popular options:
- Barefoot Sailing – Kopiko is a 33ft day catamaran
- Carino Wildlife Cruises – Carino is a 50ft spacious sailing catamaran
- Phantom Adventures – 50ft custom-built ocean racing sloop
- R Tucker Thompson – very unique, 85ft, traditional gaff-rigged schooner.
- She’s a Lady Sailing – 40ft – up to 15 guests
- Vigilant Yacht Charters- A stunning 42ft classic yacht,– up to 10 guests
Popular overnight sailing charters

Learn to sail in the Bay of Islands
As a beginner you can choose from an intensive, certified course, or just join a day tour– the choice is yours.
If you’re after an introductory day or two, the Bay of Island has a few of options.
Official certifications
The Yachting New Zealand Learn to Sail syllabus is one of NZ’s most trusted sailing courses, and is usually carried out through Yacht clubs.
Or you can do the internationally renowned RYA ( Royal Yachting Association ) syllabus.
Bay of Islands Yacht Club – Learn to sails to serious regattas
Great Escapes – accredited for YNZ learn to sail courses.
Bay Sail NZ ,- accredited to deliver RYA courses
Sail Inc – learn to sail for teenagers
Once you know the basics, it is then easy to progress to club level racing or cruising. Usually, all the equipment you need is provided by the club or sailing schools.

Bareboat hire (without skipper)
To charter a yacht bareboat you will need to prove well-rounded sailing experience and familiarity with sailboats and / or satisfactory completion of recognised boating courses. Practical knowledge and experience in piloting and anchoring procedures are essential.
Top Options:
- Fairwind – Fleet of yachts for charter from 28-feet to 45-feet
- Great Escape – Fleet includes Davidson 20, Noelex 25, and a Noelex 30 (change link to https://staging2.visitboi.demohub.site/listing/spring-sailing)
- Bay Charters – “Sensation” is a spacious and well set up Farr 1020, 34ft yacht.
Note, bareboat charters will only be licensed for a certain geographical area and companies should assist you with insurance requirements.
Bay of Islands Sailing Week (January)
Bay of Islands Sailing Week is the biggest regatta of its kind in New Zealand, and one of the Southern Hemisphere’s premier yachting events, attracting entries from around New Zealand and overseas.
Participants, locals and spectators love the event for its family-friendly, holiday feel, as much as for the competitive side of things. So even if you’re not on a boat you’ll love the party atmosphere in the area.
Families often sail together, and a whole spectrum of boats and people converge to enjoy three days of scenic and competitive racing.
Divisions are up to the organisers and dependant on the mix of vessels who enter, but as a general guide there are three divisions; larger and faster boats, medium sized boats, then the smaller and/or slower boats. Makes sense!
This year’s event has come and gone, but we suggest planning ahead for next summer

Foil Bay of Islands ( February )
Foil Bay of Islands is the biggest foiling event in the southern hemisphere. Run by the Bay of Islands Yacht Club , it really puts a great view out on the waters of the inner bay. Open to all foiling classes, come along for some great atmosphere.
Find out more
The Bay of Islands experiences a temperate climate with year-round temperatures ranging from 16 – 20°C during winter and from 20 – 28°C in the summer.
The nights can be much cooler so you’ll need appropriate clothing for all weather conditions like shorts and t-shirts during the day and thermals and fleeces at night.
A good wet weather jacket is needed, and if you’re staying overnight out on the water, wet weather pants and sea boots are advisable.
Yet something rather miraculous has happened recently where he’s pushed the boat out, so to speak. His 11-metre yacht, which has been the subject of endless weekend sanding and gluing for over 20 years, will be ready to launch next summer.
So to help him maintain this newfound work ethic, and to show genuine interest (Dad and I haven’t actually been out on the water together since I was five!), I’ve made it my mission to impress with some sailing experience. And what better place to start than the Bay of Islands – where Dad plans to launch the boat next summer!
Why sail in the Bay Of Islands?
The Bay of Islands is favoured as a sailing destination as it’s protected by multiple islands offering good anchorage, has an exceptional climate, is well set up for marine activities, and of course, is downright beautiful.
Weather Conditions
The Bay of Islands is generally very mild, adding to its appeal. When you’re out on the water however, the weather conditions can change – fast. You should always check forecasts before you go out, and throughout the day while you’re out on the water.
Maritime radio, Coastguard on VHF radio and Metservice are the best places to find up to date weather info.
Radio frequencies are different depending on where you are located – the Maritime NZ website has the details.
At the first sight of deteriorating conditions, head for shelter.
Best spots to drop anchor
There are over 140 Islands to catch the breeze in and around, but at some point you’ll want to drop anchor in a sheltered spot and eat, swim, or drop a line.
Nathalie from Vigilant Yacht Charters, (change link to https://staging2.visitboi.demohub.site/listing/vigilant-yacht-charters) says it’s too difficult to pick a top spot as there are so many beautiful options. Plus, “It depends on the day, the wind and the sea conditions” she says.
The Bay of Islands Marina team has curated a great guide of top spots to anchor, along with photos and maps:
Top 25 places to anchor

Cruising Guides
Lots of sailors seem to prefer hard copies of maps and navigation guides etc. This specialist bookshop in Auckland has a great selection of well-reviewed publications that can be ordered online
Safety Regulations
Whether you’re aboard a sail or powerboat, you must know the rules, have the right equipment, and aim to be an all-round responsible skipper.
Most boating accidents occur really suddenly with no warning, so you must be prepared for the worst – always.
Lifejackets – ALWAYS WEAR ONE – yes, we have used capitals to shout.
There will be no time to grab a lifejacket unless it is close at hand in an emergency, and it’s extremely difficult to put on a lifejacket once you’re in the water.
It’s essential that you also consider the fit of a lifejacket, and know that children have specific requirements. The right fit can be the difference between life and death on the water.
So please take the time to read the Maritime NZ recommendations around lifejackets .
Communications – Does the boat have VHF radio, Beacons, Flares and do you have a fully charged cell phone? Different types of equipment work in different areas of the coast, so you will need access to all of these things. And consider what will work when it’s wet.
Please take the time to read the Maritime NZ recommendations around communications equipment.
Weather – Always check weather conditions before you leave and while on the water. See Climate and Water conditions above.
Alcohol – Safe boating and alcohol don’t mix. Things can change quickly on the water. All on board need to stay alert and be aware – so always think twice before pouring another glass of Rose. If you’re the skipper, you probably shouldn’t drink at all. You can be prosecuted for operating a boat in a manner that causes unnecessary danger, under section 65 of the Maritime Transport Act.
Bay of Island Bylaws
Please have a look at regional rules, especially those about launching your boat in the far north:
Bay of Islands Bylaws
The Northland Regional Council has established minimum mooring/vessel restrictions:
- 1 tonne block is suitable for vessels up to 7m (23ft)
- 2 tonne block is suitable for vessels between 7m and 12m (40ft)
- 4 tonne block is suitable for vessels between 12m and 18m (60ft)
- There are various “blocks/anchor” weights in use, also, other mooring components are important for the effectiveness of moorings.
Moorings for rent – listings:
- Bay of Islands Marina
- Kerikeri Marina
- Marina Berths
- Northern Regional Council
You can also pay a company to assist with finding you a mooring in the area. Try Moorings Northland .
Sewage Regulations
It may seem harmless to discharge your waste at the end of a long day on the water, because hey, it’s a tiny amount in the scheme of things. But although effluent from one boat may be minor, the cumulative effects of the whole maritime sector are significant, so please make sure to consider the greater good and stick to the rules.
The Resource Management (Marine Pollution) Regulations 1998 outlines treatment standards that specify where treated and untreated sewage can be discharged, as well as other nasties like oil, noxious liquid substances and garbage.
This is the area from mean high water springs out to the 12 nautical miles, which is the outer limit of the New Zealand territorial sea.
Main points to note are:
- You must be more than 500 metres from the shore, more than 500 metres from a marine farm and in waters deeper than 5 metres before you can discharge untreated sewage from your ship.
- Sewage includes drainage from any form of toilet, spaces containing living animals and waste water mixed with this type of drainage.
- You can discharge treated sewage (passed through your on-board treatment system) anywhere in the coastal marine area except within 100 metres of a marine farm. Note: when sampled five times or more over 24 hours, it must contain less than 250 faecal coliforms per 100 millilitres with suspended solids less than 5 milligrams per litre.
Visit the Maritime NZ website for more details and to download the full Regulations.
Pump-Out Stations The two marinas, Kerikeri Cruising Club Marina and Bay of Islands Marina have pump out stations. Fees apply – see their websites for more:
Kerikeri Cruising Club Marina Contact: 09 407 9434
Bay Of Islands Marina Opua Contact: 09 402 7124
International Cruisers – Boat Clearance & Immigration
You can book a berth at the local marinas listed above (under “moorings”). Booking ahead, especially in summer.
NZ’s main port of entry for small craft is the Bay of Islands Marina, clearing more than 430 vessels per year. The marina has an easy-to-access quarantine dock at the northern end of its outer breakwater.
Customs, immigration and visas:
Visit New Zealand Customs Service website .
New Zealand has a six-step quarantine and biosecurity clearance procedure for yachts and other recreational vessels arriving from international waters.
Bonne navigation and fair winds!
A final thought …
“Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than those you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from safe harbor. Catch the wind in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

Bay News: Bay of Islands Sailing Week gearing up, a smarty pants guide to everything

Bay of Islands Sailing Week gearing up
Planning is under way for the Bay of Islands Sailing Week which is managed from the Opua Cruising Club from January 20-24 2025.
It’s one of the largest sailing events in the Southern Hemisphere and organisers are keen to get sponsors on board. Well-known sailing commentator Peter Montgomery said the event is “the best big-boat regatta in New Zealand”.
Sponsorship manager, Rob White, said the committee is happy to look at ways to promote a business while supporting the event.
“We work with sponsors to give maximum exposure through stories to online platforms.
“We realise it’s a tough economic world right now and more than ever there’s huge value for businesses to align with this event.”
Last year the Bay of Islands Sailing Week moved to Opua for the first time and the committee introduced two new trophies - The SheSails NZ Top Female Helm trophy for Open Racing and the Island Racing trophy.
The Open Racing trophy was won by former world match racer Claudia Pierce and her all-female crew on Spider Pig. In the Island Racing division Melissa Logan on Aeolian claimed the inaugural trophy for her division.
Mayhem, skippered by Harry Dodson and Tony Bosnyak, won the premier A division.
The regatta has grown from 39 boats in 2003 to more than 100 in 2024. The 100th entry last year was Explore Group head William Goodfellow’s classic yacht Teal.
“Whether you’re a newly put together sports boat team, or a TP52 crew who’ve been together for a while, or you just want to cruise around the islands, you will be catered for,” said White.

A smarty pants guide to everything
An oddity of Victorian publishing that celebrates the trivial has surfaced during routine cataloguing of collection items associated with the Te Waimate Mission Station.
The curiously named Child’s Guide is a miscellany of bits and pieces and is causing amusement among Collections staff at Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga.
“The first 20 pages of this book are missing, which means the context of the book was hard to understand and we weren’t sure whether it’s a book of information for children or whether it was designed for the improvement of older minds,” says Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Collections Advisor, Belinda Maingay.
A brief search online revealed the complete title – The Child’s Guide to Knowledge. The name of the author is given, rather coyly, as “A Lady” with no further information offered. However, she was subsequently identified as Fanny Umphelby and the book first appeared in 1825.
The leather-bound tome presents an almost never-ending series of questions on a bewildering array of topics, followed by an answer addressing each query. Socratic dialogue between student and teacher was likely to have been the model and the result redefines the concept of information overload.
Q: This is a name given to small strings for violins and other instruments, formerly made from the skins of the intestines of cats.
But what is now chiefly used?
A: The intestines of either sheep or lambs, dried and twisted, either singly or several together.
Q: What places are famous for making it?
A: Lyons in France; Italy and Germany.
Who knew? (No need to answer that).
“There really isn’t any equivalent book like it in terms of modern publishing but the closest might be the Guinness Book of Records with its presentation of information-rich content,” says Belinda.
Incredibly – given that the main novelty value would appear to be relentless interrogation – the book racked up at least 58 editions over the years. The author’s motivation for writing the book was explained in the introduction:
“The most commonplace subjects, and those which occur most frequently in almost every conversation, are, by youth, either totally disregarded, or but imperfectly understood.”
Te Waimate Mission Station is open to the public and is a Tohu Whenua.
Rāhui in place in Bay of Islands
For the past five years a voluntary fishing rāhui has been in place from September to December around the waters of the inner bays near Russell/Kororāreka.
The bays in question are Tahapuke Bay, Matauwhi Bay, Pomare Bay, Uruti Bay and Orongo Bay.
The rāhui is to preserve the legacy of small harbour fishing and has proven to be successful. It is well supported and will be continued again this year.
It started on September 1 and runs through until December 31 this year.
Kororāreka Marae published the rāhui notification and said it is consistent with traditional fishing practices. They ask that everyone respectfully adheres to the edict and does not gather any shellfish or other fish during the spawning period.
Deb Rawiri, one of the marae managers, said she encourages everyone to be proactive in ensuring “we all take responsibility for the kaitiakitanga and thereby encourage future generations”.
She acknowledged the Mana Whenua/Moana of Ngāti Manu to enable the rāhui to be implemented.
Savour Northland challenges and tastes
The Savour Northland Experience kicks off on October 4 and runs until September 28.
On offer is a variety of culinary events from around the region with competitive categories. The beneficiaries are the paying public.
There is the Plated Produce category where competitors present a dish with a Northland key ingredient as the hero of the menu.
Perfect Pairings is similar to that but with an added Northland beverage, alcoholic or non-alcoholic.
Sweet Savours showcases the pie and pastry gurus. Competitors present a sweet or savoury dish and describe all the local ingredients.
Street Savours is where Northland food trucks present a dish street style with local ingredients as the main event.
Northland in a Glass - competitors use locally distilled spirits or liqueurs, mixers, fruits or vegetables to present cocktails, mocktails or smoothies to showcase Northland in a liquid form.
There are “Trip to Sip” events at a variety of establishments. Hone’s Garden in Russell is pairing with PhatHouse Brewing from Haruru and McLeod’s Brewery from Waipu several times over the month.
There is wine tasting called “144 Islands” at Gables Restaurant in Russell which also has “Sip and Savour”.
Orongo Bay Oysters are hosting what’s called a “Shellabration” where you can meet the oyster farmer, the brewer and the winemaker at the one spot.
Kai Mata restaurant in Kerikeri is hosting what they call “Devour Northland”, spread out over the four Sundays of the month.
There is a “Shaken Not Stirred” event at Charlotte’s Kitchen in Paihia which is a black-tie “dress to impress” night.
Waitangi Treaty Grounds is hosting a hāngī dinner and say visitors will experience “fierce challenges by Māori warriors” on the night.
Establishments in Kaitaia, Taipa, Whangarei and Waipu are also hosting various events.

I’ve never been much of a yacht person.
That’s mostly because I didn’t grow up in proximity to the ocean or other yacht-appropriate bodies of water. It wasn’t until I moved to the Mediterranean that I got a crash course in yachting.
If you’re new to yachting like I was, let me catch you up.
Yachts and boats are differentiated mostly by size and purpose. A boat is just about any type of vessel that floats—for utility, for business, for racing, and more. A yacht is distinct in that they’re at least 40 feet in length and tend to be more luxuriously designed and appointed.
That’s the key here—yachts are for pleasure.
Most of these flashy vessels are docked at yacht clubs.
What’s a yacht club?
What’s a yacht club, you might ask? Like any type of club, these groups bring together hobbyists and professionals who adore yachting (and even sailing). Most yacht clubs set up shop near or on marinas where members dock their boats.
Some also offer membership benefits like mooring discounts, training sessions, sailing programs, and even social events. The very best might even include fine dining restaurants, clubhouses, pools, fitness centers, and lounges, similar to a social club .
But the focus is on yachting as a passion—which means some of the world’s best yachting clubs are located in tropical paradises where boats abound.
What’s coming to mind for you? I’m already imagining the Caribbean .
Specifically, I have the British Virgin Islands in mind. This cluster of islands is renowned globally for its yachting and boating culture. Even the US Virgin Islands offer a few top-tier yacht clubs.
Want to know the best part? Yacht clubs are usually open to the general public, especially those who are on private charters. While yacht clubs are heavily geared toward those who own a vessel or are chartering one, some might even let people visit their restaurants.
If you’re interested in exploring the world of yacht clubs, make sure to check out these locations. They’re some of the most highly rated yacht clubs in the Caribbean.
Best yacht clubs in the British Virgin Islands
Bitter end yacht club.
Virgin Gorda
What makes Bitter End Yacht Club a top pick for BVI travelers?
Aside from its over-the-water rooms and emphasis on eco-friendly materials, this club has been a top choice for years thanks to its location. Virgin Gorda is renowned as one of the most beautiful islands in the British Virgin Islands.
On top of that, the Bitter End is placed right smack in the middle of the British Virgin Islands’ best sailing conditions. Year-round sunshine and ideal wind conditions mean that those who stay here can take advantage of boating adventures all day, every day.
The cherry on top is its family-owned and open-minded nature. Many guests report returning year after year thanks to the homely and casual vibe.

Ocean’s 7 Yacht Club
Peter Island
Ocean’s 7 Yacht Club is a popular stop for guests on private charters along with those mooring their own vessels. The staff manning the yacht club are prepared to help yachters dock their boat, then start enjoying nearby activities—from snorkeling to sipping on a cocktail.
The restaurant is also highly rated. The fresh seafood has been highly rated, along with the view over the ocean. Just keep in mind that this is a sleepy little outpost, similar to the Bitter End Yacht Club.
The Moorings Yacht Club
The Moorings is one the premier yacht chartering groups in the British Virgin Islands—no need to bring your own vessel.
The Moorings is also a global brand, meaning you can expect plenty of experience and expertise when you book a charter or another experience. The focus here is on customization. From their base in Road Town, Tortola, the Moorings team can help you craft a personalized yacht charter.
Most are focused on exploring the 50-odd islands dotting the British Virgin Islands. Some charters also include docking portions to allow visitors to sample the best restaurants and cocktail bars around the islands.
Best yacht club in the US Virgin Islands
St thomas yacht club.
Racing is the name of the game at the St Thomas Yacht Club. Whether or not you plan on competing—or even mooring—at this club, it’s a great spot to watch live regattas. The yacht club also offers lessons, including youth sailing lessons, advanced seafaring courses, and community events.
Community seems to be a pretty strong focus here. The yacht club regularly hosts events like Friday night pickleball and afternoon drinks in the galley. Plus, it’s open to newcomers, offering programs like the Learn to Sail Vacation Week.

"Captain Adam and his crew really exceeded all expectations!"
I guess I'll start with the actual yacht. It was a perfect size and layout for our group of 7 women, but I think it would also be fantastic for a group of 5 couples or an extended family situation. It was tastefully and beautifully appointed and very comfortable. Lots of room to separate from the group and read a book, with lots of comfy seating areas to congregate. We hardly read our books because we were having so much fun! The following are just minor things but it could do with a second efoil, just like it has 2 seabobs. It could also do with fibreglass paddleboards, not inflatables, so that you're more likely to use them for longer periods and go further exploring.
Captain Adam and his crew of Sylvia, Yuliia, Fraser, Chris and Alex really exceeded all expectations! They made a huge effort to ensure that we felt comfortable from the start, that was so lovely for us. They were quick to assess what we enjoyed in our daily activities, and we fell into a wonderful daily routine. Adam made some fantastic restaurant recommendations for us, one in the old town of Ibiza that was really cute and traditional, and the other a beach restaurant that was off the scale in terms of beautiful fit out, food and cocktails. He really nailed what we would be into. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful with efoil instruction! Always up for a chat. I couldn't imagine a better captain for us.
Sylvia's food. Oh how we enjoyed finding out in the morning what she had procured fresh for us for our lunch and dinner. Her expertise in the kitchen was very much appreciated by our group. She made me love raw seafood in a way that I never have. I have been craving it since I got home. She made salads that looked and tasted so incredible that I took pics and am planning to recreate them to the best of my ability. We felt like we were eating like Iberian queens! We ate so much food, but it was so clean and healthy that none of us even put weight on over the week. That may not mean much to a lot of people, but it meant a lot to us!
Yuliia had the innate ability to be there every time we needed her. It was like she had ESP. Her tablescapes were a delight every evening, such imagination and effort. She was wonderful to have a chat to and after a while we just wanted her to join us at the table. Yuliia and Alex had our bedrooms immaculate at all times. They were in there tidying up multiple times in a day. It was glorious! Alex made a huge effort to get our coffee orders perfectly each day and was so friendly. Alex and Yuliia made fantastic cocktails for us. Yuliia made me perfect half strength drinks every single time, after me only asking her once. It was so lovely.
We had Chris and Fraser working pretty hard on the beach club platform and in the tender. Nothing was ever too much trouble for them. Fraser even took my drone apart when the gimbal was stuck. Chris was the perfect water sports provider with his friendly demeanour and enthusiasm. He was so encouraging as we were trying to learn new water sports like efoiling and wakeboarding! One thing that really made us laugh was Fraser and Chris's hilarious song choices cranked nice and loud as we approached the beach in our tender. They had great senses of humour.
We will enjoy looking back on these memories for the rest of our lives!! I hope Adam and the crew know how much of a great time they gave us. If I was to charter a yacht in the Mediterranean again, and I'm highly likely to after this epic trip, one of the first questions I would ask would be which yacht is Captain Adam running? I would trust his judgement in employing a killer crew like he had on Delta One.
10/10. Could not have been better. I am already looking at new Med destinations.
Thanks so much

- Luxury Riverboats Are Giving Superyacht Charters a Run for Your Money
Once the ugly-duckling cousin to oceangoing superyachts, many riverboats now offer similar levels of luxury, comfort, and service. They can also access historic cities or remote deltas where no superyacht can venture.

With the rise of expedition yachting in remote destinations such as Antarctica , Greenland, and Indonesia’s Raja Ampat, there’s a general belief that all corners of the globe are now accessible by private yacht charter.

“River cruising is the beneficiary of a larger travel trend in which luxury travelers are looking to do nothing,” Daniel Levine, director of New York consultancy Avant-Guide Institute , tells Robb Report . “By that, I mean they can visit multiple ports and soak up plenty of culture and history, all without changing hotels.”
This new fleet of river cruisers can access inland cities and remote stretches of countryside that are inaccessible to large oceangoing vessels. Plus, Levine says, there’s an added advantage to river travel: no seasickness.
One leader of the new set of purpose-built riverboats is Aqua Expeditions , the luxury river cruise operator whose first vessel, Aria Amazon , set sail on the Peruvian Amazon in 2011. Over a decade later, the fleet has grown to three river ships, none with more than 20 suites, cruising both the Amazon and the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia, along with two oceangoing yachts in the Galapagos and Eastern Indonesia.
“On my river ships, 30 percent of departures are now private buyouts, similar to traditional charters,” says founder Francesco Galli Zugaro. These clients, mainly multigenerational family groups or large gatherings of friends, are people who tend to vacation on yachts rather than the typical cruise ship crowd. Most of them have come to the riverboats, says Galli Zugaro, after chartering one of Aqua Expeditions’ two yachts.
The desire for off-the-beaten-track travel is fueling this new interest in riverboat charters, says Frédéric Crétin, a Monaco-based charter broker at superyacht brokerage Camper & Nicholsons . “We’ve had a surge in enquiries for the Peruvian Amazon, especially with Americans since it’s not too far from home,” says Crétin, who manages whole-boat bookings for the Aqua Expeditions fleet.
Heritage Line operates five traditionally-styled ships along the upper and lower Mekong River and in Vietnam’s Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay. “Our vessels, particularly our small ship sailing charters on Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay, have seen an increase in private stays,” says CEO John Tue Nguyen. “We now average 12 to 15 charters annually, including families, multi-generational bookings and VIP travelers.”
In Egypt, a gap in the market to showcase the country’s temples in a private, exclusive way, was behind the launch of the Nile River’s first luxury charter yacht in 2022, Berge . “Our clients are mostly royal families, politicians, celebrities, and athletes,” says Armen Kazazian of Kazazian Cruises , the yacht’s owner. “They don’t want to share the Egypt experience with hundreds of other people.”
The 180-foot, nine-cabin vessel has recently been joined by a sistership, the 196-foot, nine-cabin Arax . True to superyacht protocol, charters are secured with an official MYBA (The Worldwide Yachting Association) contract, and in the lead-up to the charter, a preference form is sent out to gather information on dietary preferences and daily routines to ensure everything is ready for your arrival.
The differences also include having no water toys as on a conventional superyacht charter. “But we overcome that with the destination and experiences, such as candlelit dinners on private islands,” says Kazazian.
Inland cruising has multiple benefits, says Matthew Shollar of Transcend Cruises , Europe’s first charter-only, river-cruise company. “You’re not just in coastal locations and you can take your whole group off the boat to a spa, or go biking, or shopping,” Shollar says. “And a riverboat always docks close to your destination.”
In September 2025, the company’s first ship, the 443-foot Transcend , will launch, with a second identical vessel following in early 2026. Penned by Tillberg Design of Sweden, both are built to European riverboat specs but draw inspiration from superyachts for style and amenities, including a 2,600-square-foot indoor/outdoor fitness, spa, and guest wellness facility.
“The single most expensive piece of equipment on board is a hot tip from superyachts, a 144-inch C Seed unfolding television,” continues Shollar. “It’s a worthwhile investment for guests to enjoy everything from silent discos to movie nights on the sun deck.”
While the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) trade is set to be Transcend Cruises’ main market, the founders know that there’s a demand for private buyouts—especially given their vessels’ capacity to accommodate up to 120 people, or 10 times the 12-guest standard on most charter yachts. The vessels’ 60, 210-square-foot cabins can be converted into 30 larger 420-square-foot suites.
Transcend will sail “the highest-demand European waterways,” including the Rhine, Danube, and Moselle, offering waterside access to historic cities like Trier, Budapest, and Belgrade.
But a second collection of smaller luxury barges is carrying charter to canals and smaller waterways. Both Belmond’s 128-foot Coquelicot and European Waterways’ Kir Royale launched in France’s Champagne region this year, with a max capacity of six and eight guests, respectively, and the possibility of whole-boat bookings. This combination of space, intimacy, pastoral views and access to exceptional vineyards can’t be replicated on oceangoing yachts.
While luxury riverboats are still a small niche compared to the larger world of superyacht charters, they offer another kind of cruising experience.
