Mettatuxet: Quiet hamlet by a busy river

A view of the Narrow River off North River Drive in the Mettatuxet neighborhood of Narragansett. The Providence Journal/Bob Breidenbach

NARRAGANSETT — The developer who laid out most of the streets in Mettatuxet named them after trees and shrubs.

The area's original occupants, who didn't have streets to name, called it Metatoxet, which means "well-wooded stream place," according to "American Indian Place Names in Rhode Island: Past and Present" by Frank Waabu O'Brien.

The same book, which can be searched online, also lists Mattatuxot, further up what we call the Narrow River, in what is now Wickford. O'Brien's research says that slightly different name might have meant "At the worthless little river?; poorly wooded place?"

Narragansett's Mettatuxet neighborhood covers the hill leading up from the Narrow River on the west, crosses Boston Neck Road and overlooks the better-known and more expensive Bonnet Shores to the east and north.

Bonnet has Narragansett Bay frontage with saltwater beaches. Mettatuxet's Narrow River waterfront isn't as salty and it's more protected. Boats tied up at the Mettatuxet Yacht Club can motor out to the Bay and Block Island Sound, but the lake-like estuary offers calmer waters for kayaks, canoes and other watercraft.

Paul Coupland, 54, who moved into a 936-square-foot ranch on Spice Bush Trail just before his daughter, now 18, was born, said most of the neighborhood was built in the 1970s, and it's quiet, with few disturbances. "It's not as though you hear police sirens all the time," said his daughter, Lindsey Coupland, who was about to take their collie, Blaise, 13, out for a walk. It's a pet-friendly neighborhood, they said, with an emphasis on friendly, because people speak to each other while out walking.

Summer brings heavy traffic on Boston Neck Road, but not gridlock inside the plat. The river, however, is very busy, said Paul Coupland, a native of England. He likes to paddle around in the quiet of a summer evening. The Couplands, who live four blocks from the river, have a miniature garage just for kayaks.

Rabbits, deer and foxes come and go in cycles, Paul said, with rabbits currently flourishing. The family occasionally hears of or sees a fisher, a large weasel with retractable claws. A forested hillside, part of the John H. Chafee National Wildlife Refuge, is bordered on three sides by Mettatuxet homes.

Some of the waterfront homes were built in 1955, a generation before the plat. Judging by assessments alone, the even-numbered ones next to the water can be worth $129,000 to $490,000 more than the odd-numbered houses directly across the street.

The neighborhood comprises about 630 private residences and 26 condo units on 32 streets.

Five houses are for sale. The highest asking price is $329,900 for three bedrooms and one bath in 1,346 square feet at 34 Spice Bush Trail, built in 1976. The lowest is $249,000, also built in 1976 and also with three bedrooms and one bath, in 960 square feet at 93 Inkberry Trail.

Twenty homes changed hands in 2014, with a median price of $274,500. In 2015, there were 22, with a median of $294,750, compared with the Narragansett-wide median of $382,500 that year. So far this year, 12 have been sold in Mettatuxet, with a median of $262,500.

The highest recent sales price was $664,500, paid in April for a one-bed, two-bath, 1,787-square-foot home built in 1995 at 6 South River Drive.

Narragansett's population was 15,868 in the 2010 Census. In the summer, the population is said to more than double, to 34,000.

Watercraft safety event ‘Navigating the Narrow River’ held in Narragansett

  • May 9, 2024
  • May 9, 2024 Updated May 13, 2024

On Saturday, April 6 the Narrow River Preservation Association (NRPA) and the Mettatuxet Improvement Association sponsored an informational session with a panel of representatives from several agencies and organizations. The meeting took place at the Mettatuxet Yacht Club from 10 to 12, and association members as well as the general public participated in a lively discussion concerning best practices for preserving both the Narrow River and the safety of those who enjoy recreational activities on it.

Various panelists highlighted the most important aspects of personal safety for boaters and paddlers. Mark Marosits, State Director of the American Canoe Association, emphasized that kayaks, paddleboards and canoes are considered “vessels” and therefore require the use of Coast Guard-approved life jackets. In addition paddlers should wear a sound signal, carry a visual distress signal, and before launching, leave a “float plan” with a friend or neighbor. Motor boats must give right of way to paddlers except in narrow channels, when the power vessel has right of way.

Michael Stach, the South Kingstown Harbor Master announced the availability of special decals that can be left in the paddle craft. These can be labeled with...
