Riva 82′ Diva Reviewed

  • By Phil Draper
  • April 26, 2024

Riva 82' Diva

Full disclosure: I carry my car keys on a Riva fob as a constant reminder of where I want to be. I’ve always appreciated Riva’s design and execution, and the Riva 82′ Diva only strengthens my admiration for the brand.

Flybridge motoryachts of this volume do not get any more elegant. Mauro Micheli and his team at Officina Italiana Design—which has penned every new Riva for about three decades—tell me their brief this time was to create a modern flybridge yacht that’s also sporty and streamlined. And haven’t they just? The 82′ Diva’s proportions are precise, and it is the first Riva with fold-down quarter platforms that turn the cockpit and hydraulic swim platform into a beach club. That guest space has a table and a pair of inboard-facing sofas, as well as a sun pad above a tender garage that you would never know was there, given its low profile. The fold-down platforms add more than 10 feet to the almost 20-foot beam.

Riva 82' Diva

More alfresco lounging is on the 430-square-foot flybridge. It’s partially protected by a hardtop that covers the cockpit stairs, a wet bar with a countertop, an L-shaped sofa and a table to port, and the two-seat upper helm to starboard. The hardtop’s forward edge is notched to provide headroom en route to the forward sun pad above the pilothouse. More lounging and sunbathing areas are forward on the deck below.

Inside, the salon has picture windows that make it a naturally bright space. The 82′ Diva’s standard decor is high-gloss “rigatoni” veneers—strips of Italian walnut—with other options available, including a chocolate wenge. Regardless of the wood choice, the varnish work can be 25 coats deep. And the accents are equally tactile: polished stainless steel, satin lacquer work, stitched leather, marble, and contrasting carpets and furnishings. It’s a marvelous fusion of light, midrange and dark tones. Everything craves to be touched. While the salon’s layout is conventional enough, with a lounge area aft and dining forward, the dining space is two steps up to enhance guests’ views during meals. They’re probably the best views I’ve seen on any motoryacht less than 100 feet long. The custom dining table I saw was faced with an optional Port Laurent marble top and sides. The standard one comes with black crystal. The eight chairs are from Molteni.

Riva 82' Diva

Also on this deck are a single-seat lower helm and an adjacent galley beneath the windshield and skylights, which can be screened. The idea is to place these crew areas together with doors to the side decks, which are protected by nearly full top-deck overhangs. The helm and galley can be partitioned off for privacy too.

Performance is also notable. The 82′ Diva is based on a new hull form with standard twin 1,800 hp MAN V-12 diesels. The builder promises a top speed of around 29 knots and a 26-knot fast cruise, at which range should be about 300 nautical miles with the yacht’s 1,700 gallons of fuel. The 82′ Diva I got aboard had 1,900 hp MAN V-12s, which Riva says deliver a top speed of around 31 knots at half load. We couldn’t quite manage those numbers in calm seas off Cannes, France, where the yacht topped out at around 28 knots, but the boat was heavy with a big generator, 88 percent fuel, 100 percent water, a Williams SportJet 395 tender and 16 people aboard. I ran it with the Humphree dynamic trim system active and the Sleipner Vector Fin stabilizers on, and I turned the Seakeeper 18 on and off. I thought the props could use some fine-tuning, or perhaps the bottom needed a scrub, costing us a knot or two. This 82′ Diva had logged around 2,000 nm in most types of weather. At a fast cruise of 27 knots, range with the bigger engines should be 250 nm to 270 nm. The driving positions are great inside and out. Each console has standard 16-inch Simrad multifunction displays (three below and two up top), with the option of 19-inch displays. The electrohydraulic steering is nicely responsive. Wind the wheel over hard, and the yacht heels gently into any turn, but comes around surprisingly quickly, given a displacement of more than 170,000 pounds.

Riva 82' Diva

Guest accommodations are conventional, with all four en suite staterooms on the lower deck. The owner’s stateroom is amidships with a corner sofa and a whopping 7 feet, 6 inches of headroom (beneath the elevated dining table). The forepeak VIP stateroom has 6-foot-7-inch headroom. The two other guest staterooms have twin berths; the starboard one converts to a double. Crew’s quarters are between the owner’s stateroom and the engine room, with discreet access to the starboard side deck. The standard layout is for three crew in two cabins, with a head-shower and an optional washer-dryer.

Rivas are also good with what can’t be seen. For a planing design with big, powerful engines, the 82′ Diva is fundamentally a quiet yacht. I registered just 67 decibels on my meter in the owner’s stateroom at maximum speed, and around 65 decibels at a fast, low-20s cruise. That’s the same noise level as laughter or normal conversation.

Riva 82' Diva

Long-term success for any brand can be measured by its consistency from product to product, year in and year out, as well as its ability to evolve with its customers and attract new ones. The Riva 82′ Diva hits bull’s-eyes on all these elements. It has first-rate fit and finish, impressive performance, and many examples of luxury, performance and sophistication. Riva’s production line should be buzzing for years to come.

Riva 56 Rivale: The latest addition to an Italian icon

The first new model from Sarnico since the passing of Carlo Riva is strongly influenced by the great Italian designer’s legacy, writes Boat International Media CEO Chris Downham_..._

It's not often that I get out of the office to go to the launch of a new model; there are people better qualified than me to look at new boats, and often other commitments make it a bit tricky. But every once in a while it works out, and so when the invite came in to go to the premier of the new Rivale 56, and I had a couple of days window there were no good reasons not to go and lots of positive ones to schedule in the trip.

Most notably, this is the first new model in the Riva range since the passing of Carlo Riva in April this year. As with other recent Riva launches, the responsibility for this design fell to Officina Italiana Design — although the influence of Carlo over the brand that bears his name is still powerful. As such, the opportunity to make my first pilgrimage to the Riva facility and its spiritual home in Sarnico was not one to be missed.

Riva’s base is about 90 minutes drive west of Milan on the shores of Lake Iseo, but a world away from the hustle and bustle of Italy's finance and fashion heartland. It is a picturesque holiday town but with a manufacturing base; Riva has been building boats around here for 175 years, and the facility is part working production line, part sales room and all historic epicentre for the Riva brand. The launch formed one element of a night that can only be described as a full on party, held in the shipyard itself. In true Italian style it was done with a combination of showmanship and passion.

Ferretti Group doesn't seem capable of doing things by halves, bringing in Massimo Bottura from the three Michelin star Osteria Francescana in Modena to provide the catering, a 16 piece band playing party classics, a top quality DJ to spin tunes into the small hours, and rolling in the launch of an Abarth Fiat 500 695 Rivale limited edition (with a claimed top speed of 140mph) as part of the programme.

And that’s not to mention Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi taking to the stage later in the evening to perform a very competent rendition of The Eagles’ Hotel California . Following that segment I found myself reviewing my own parameters for what the role of a CEO is.

The centrepiece of the night, though, was undoubtedly the arrival of the new 17 metre Riva motor yacht. This was a launch as performance art, revealing its name as Rivale 56 — a moniker inherited from earlier model.

The boat appeared from behind a large floating mirrored box (complete with eight avant grade dancers), which divided in two for the boat to emerge through, just as the musical medley culminated in the Duran Duran classic A View To A Kill .

If you are going to launch a quintessentially Italian boat in an Italian shipyard, why not have a world class Italian chef, a good dose of drama, and a few hundred of your closest friends partying until the early hours?

As with other Italian launches, it did feel like a fitting celebration. Perhaps a bit too much so, as we arrived sore-headed the following morning for a first look on board the Rivale 56 itself.

The overall impression is of a pocket superyacht. With a full-beam master and a generous guest cabin, both en-suite, plus a day head and a further space for either crew accommodation or bunks — it's pretty extensive for a 17 metre. For the first hull, soft furnishings were provided by Ivano Redaelli and Van Besouw, including tartan blankets and wall-to-wall carpets.

Specification and headroom are high throughout, with everything from high-gloss mahogany panelling in the galley through to the on-deck barbecue providing a sense of generosity and luxury living. Everything is of course much more compact than on a larger boat, but it feels well thought out and with a clear vision of how the boat will be used, for weekends exploring Italian coastal waters, or similar, just further afield.

The Riva brand heritage shines through, as the Rivale 56 is full of reminders of its distinguished antecedents . Take the stainless steel horn on the foredeck for example — styled specifically for this boat and but inspired by the same feature on 1960s Riva models.

A spin around Lake Iseo, accompanied by one of Ferretti's Middle Eastern dealers, plus a current Riva-owning couple considering an upgrade to this model, was a great way to blow away some of the cobwebs. While we didn't put the Rivale 56 through the full range of its steps, we did enough to get a sense of its power and acceleration, all achieved with quiet efficiency thanks to a pair of 1,000hp MAN engines for a top speed of 35 knots. The yard will also be offering a more powerful twin 1,200hp version that should be capable of 38 knots.

The Ferretti Group team is confident in the Rivale 56, and expects to be able to deliver around eight to ten per year. With prices starting at €1,800,000, it seems an attractive proposition, and one that fits in with the Riva legacy. I imagine Carlo would be proud.

Best Riva boats: 10 stunning boats from the famous Italian builder

  • Top stories

No-one has ever done a better job of making timeless works of art out of mahogany. But there's more to the best Riva boats than just woodworking

Decades after Riva stopped making wooden boats, no-one has ever done a better job of making timeless works of art out of mahogany. But there always was much more to the legendary boatyard than its woodworking skills.

Power, performance and gorgeous looks have always been as crucial to the Riva boat offering as impeccably grain-matched dowels and 12 coats of varnish. And the yard has built some absolute classic motor boats in fibreglass too.

With a history that stretches back into another century, choosing just ten of the best Riva boats to write about is a tricky task but here are my personal favourites from oldest to newest.

Are Riva boats still being built?

For those with only a passing interest in motor boats the name Riva probably conjures up images of the classic Italian styled all-wood muscle boat, cruising on the waters of Lake Como.

But the desirable marque has continued to make motor yachts for many years, often at the forefront of innovation, with new sportsfly and flybridge models being built today – and a number of new more traditionally-styled open boat options too.

Ronzino – built 1935

If Carlo Riva gave the boatyard the iconic status that we still acknowledge today, it was his father Serafino’s passion for racing hydroplanes that set the ball rolling, back in the 1920s.

Motor boats like the victorious Ronzino, built for Count Metello Rossi, shone the limelight on the Riva brand for the very first time, and set the stage for the famous high-performance runabouts that followed.

Fifteen feet long and powered by an inboard four-cylinder, 145hp, 1.5-litre BPM petrol engine, this Riva boat was built of double-skinned aviation plywood on oak formers.

Riva Tritone – built 1950

Twin-engined and more than 26ft long, the Tritone was a muscleboat before the word had been invented.

The earliest examples sported 177hp engines and had a top speed of 45 knots but the 16-year course of its 258-unit production saw the Tritone grow slightly longer and a lot more powerful, culminating in the Cadillac model with its pair of 320hp V8s.

With a less voluptuous appearance than the fabled Aquarama, which shared its hull, this motor boat is still regarded by many aficionados as the quintessential wooden Riva – powerful, authoritative and effortlessly elegant.

Riva Bertram25 Sport Fisherman. Photo: Motor Boat & Yachting

Riva Bertram 25 Sport Fisherman – built 1970

In 1970 both Riva and Bertram found themselves owned by the Whittaker Corporation.

The synergies weren’t immediately obvious but Carlo Riva knew he had to get into fibreglass boatbuilding and Dick Bertram’s boats had an unequalled reputation for high-speed seakeeping thanks to their race-proven deep-V hulls.

Carlo’s decision to bring a 25 over to Sarnico to fit out as a Mediterranean luxury weekender, with an elevated finish, plenty of interior wood, and a more versatile cockpit design, was a great move and became an instant classic.

Riva 2000 – built 1973

Design legend Sonny Levi was not just a superb naval architect and brilliant engineer, he also drew some of the best-looking boats of his era.

When Riva asked him to design a triple-engined sportscruiser powered by his innovative surface drive system, the result was destined to be something special.

The 37ft, two-berth Riva 2000 packed 1,050 horsepower in a 20-degree deep-V hull, and could reach 53 knots fully loaded.

It inspired boatyards on both sides of the Atlantic to up their game, and still turns heads today, 40 years later.

River Rudy. Photo: Motor Boat & Yachting

Riva Rudy – built 1972

Small, fast, fun and gorgeous to look at, the 19ft Rudy speedboat was Riva’s first in-house GRP project, its hull mould taken off a wooden Riva Junior.

With a single 190hp four-cylinder petrol engine and shaft drive, it made an ideal yacht tender, ski-boat or fun runabout, while its stylish looks, 36-knot top speed and big aft sunbed offered all the advantages of the wooden boats without the maintenance headaches.

The Riva 50 Superamerica is hanging from a crane close to the dock. The weather is sunny.

Riva 50 Superamerica. Photo: Riva 50 SuperAmerica

Riva 50 Superamerica – built 1981

In the days when the London Boat Show was squashed into the original 1930s Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre, the biggest boat on display was often the 50ft Riva Superamerica shown by Lewis Marine, behind a red rope and guarded by a uniformed commissionaire.

British boatbuilders at the time had nothing to match it, but as well as picking up some valuable marketing tips, they also saw just how cool and desirable a big flybridge yacht could be.

It took a while, but when Fairline’s 50 came out in 1986 it represented a huge step for UK boatbuilding – its two-tone gelcoat a conscious homage to its Italian inspiration.

Riva Ferrari 32 – built 1988

Early Riva boats sported engines from Chris-Craft and there was at least one Lamborghini-powered Aquarama.

The shipyard was never shy of collaborations with big brands and in the world of high-octane luxury, the Riva Ferrari is top of the list.

So although it’s a shame it didn’t have Ferrari engines, the Riva Ferrari’s twin 390hp BPM V8s with surface drives still pushed it to 53 knots, and it was designed using Ferrari’s CAD software, an idea as advanced for the time as the carbon fibre used for the radar arch.

Only 40 Riva Ferrari 32s were built.

The classy Riva Aquariva speeding away from the camera. The boat's aesthetic is classic, in brown and beige.

Riva Aquariva. Photo: Motor Boat & Yachting

Riva Aquariva – built 2000

In 1998 Riva was owned by Vickers and wooden boat manufacture had been halted two years before. The yard was floundering, but Stephen Julius, a canny entrepreneur, understood the problem, and the brand.

The result was the Aquariva, 33ft of perfectly proportioned dayboat with all the quality of its predecessors, but in fibreglass.

It paved the way for Riva’s motor boat future, and when Julius sold up in 2000, Ferretti simply had to keep going on the same path.

A sleek, grey Riva 76 Perseo speeding through the water at sunset.

Riva 76 Perseo. Photo: Motor Boat & Yachting

Riva 76 Perseo – built 2015

Given Riva’s indelible association with fast, open sports machines, it’s easy to forget how pioneering the yard has also been when it comes to the more sensible world of flybridge cruising boats.

And dazzled by the pure allure of the 76 Perseo you might be forgiven for not noticing that it too has an upper helm station, and seating up there for ten – not forgetting the spacious deck saloon and four sleeping cabins down below.

Sensible, however, it isn’t – the Perseo packs up to 3,600hp and can blast along at close to 40 knots.

The Riva Rivarmaire bobbing on calm waters. Two people are hugging on deck.

Riva Rivamarie. Photo: Motor Boat & Yachting

Riva Rivamare – built 2016

The old Riva boat spirit is alive and well in the 39ft Rivamare, a fibreglass reimagining of the legendary Aquarama, complete with a powerful flared bow, wraparound windscreen, sculpted stern and a central walkway up through the sunbed.

Times have changed, though, so it also offers a modern medium-V hull, twin 400hp Volvos on Duoprop drives, a practical galley, air-conditioning and a gyro stabiliser.

But it remains an old-school open boat, without even a radar mast, and it goes as good as it looks.

The elegant mahogany design was an instant hit among CEOs, royalty and movie stars when it launched in 1962.

When Carlo Riva performed a Franken-boat surgery on one of his Tritone models in 1962, he had no idea that the gleaming new mahogany design would become the world’s most beloved powerboat. At the time, he was intent on reinventing the family brand,  Riva , started by his great-grandfather Pietro in 1842 on Lake Iseo in Sarnico, Italy. Over the years, the yard had introduced many successful designs but needed a forward-looking model that reflected the glamour that was consuming postwar Italy.

Carlo originally wanted to call the new boat the Admiral but settled on a more futuristic name, Aquarama, after the trendy panoramic film technique Cinerama, which utilized three adjoining screens. The boat’s beautiful mahogany hull, with its sweeping, one-piece windshield and center sun pad, became a status symbol almost immediately after the Aquarama launched in 1962—no doubt helped by the fact that the boat was not only sexy but also fast and functional, powered by 185 hp  Chris-Craft  engines and able to hit a top speed of 45 mph.

The first Aquaramas were an instant hit among CEOs, royalty and movie stars, even priced as much as a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, the most expensive car in Italy at the time. Sophia Loren purchased hull number three, and soon Rex Harrison, King Hussein of Jordan and Brigitte Bardot and her third husband, the German baron and playboy Gunther Sachs, were all owners as well. By 1965, the Riva Aquarama was considered the world’s most desirable motorboat.

riva yacht competitors

Its unmistakable shape became a centerpiece of Monaco’s harbor. “My father [Prince Rainier III] saw Mr. Riva as quite a businessman and engineer,” says Prince Albert II of Monaco. “And the Aquarama, of course, became the mythical symbol of the Riva adventure. It was so visible in Monaco [that] it became closely linked with our maritime presence.” The  Monaco Yacht Club  even created the Riva Aquarama Lounge, the only room named after a boat in the entire Lord Norman Foster–designed facility.

And it wasn’t just movie stars and royalty who gave the Aquarama its cachet. Carlo had accented the boat with references to the most expensive luxury cars of the day, including custom stainless-steel gauges, the steering wheel from the 1958 Chrysler 300, wicker tables that folded down behind the front seats and a nifty, spring-operated Bimini that shielded the cockpit from excessive sun and rain.

Fittingly, the Aquarama has always drawn more comparisons to couture and high culture than other machines. Carlo referred to the chrome fittings—including the bowsprit, nicknamed the crocodile’s grin for its distinctive shape—as the boat’s “jewelry,” while Augusto Savoldi, who began his apprenticeship at age 16 on the first Aquarama, recalls the master carpenters treating the original richly grained Honduran Cedar console like “a piece of art.” Carlo’s daughter Lia, meanwhile, remembers her father saying the engines’ melodic rumbling was “not noise; it’s music.” Perhaps the best barometer of the Aquarama’s iconic status is its consistently high resale value. Prices for historically correct restorations, depending on model and series, range between $400,000 and $800,000, with the record price, for the second-to-last-built Aquarama Special, standing at $1.15 million—still, perhaps, a small price to pay for history’s purest distillation of la dolce vita.

Riva announces Jeff Brown Yachts as its new exclusive dealer for the Western United States

Riva, a mark of excellence in the global yachting industry, announces a major dealership agreement with Jeff Brown Yachts that consolidates the brand’s presence in the United States. As exclusive dealer, Jeff Brown Yachts will oversee distribution, sales and services for the iconic range of Riva boats in the main markets on America’s West Coast, covering strategic states including California, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii.

“I met Jeff few years ago at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, and I soon realized he could have been the right business partner. Jeff shares our same commitment and vision for Riva”, said Simone Meletti, managing director of Ferretti Group Americas. “I’m confident Jeff Brown Yachts will be a leading player for Ferretti Group and will make an important contribution to the continuing growth of the Riva brand in the U.S. market.”   “It’s an absolute honor to represent Riva on the West Coast from Seattle to San Diego”, says Jeff Brown, owner of Jeff Brown Yachts. “Riva is a storied brand that I have admired for my entire life, so to represent the brand exclusively on the West Coast of the United States is truly a privilege”.

With a consolidated network of offices in San Diego, Newport Beach, Sausalito, Seattle, and Kailua-Kona, Jeff Brown Yachts stands out as the fastest growing dealer on the West Coast , ready to offer customers a tailor-made service covering sales, repairs, refitting and maintenance, and reflecting the attention to detail and professional approach that have always been signature features of the Riva brand.

With over 30 years of experience, Jeff Brown and his team provide a high-end service, allowing customers to fully enjoy the unique experience that only a Riva yacht can offer.

This new agreement strengthens Riva’s determination to collaborate with excellent partners, consolidating the brand’s presence around the world, and ensuring its customers’ satisfaction through a close-knit assistance network and a broad range of services that include delivery, maintenance and transport.

38’ Rivamare

Jeff Brown Yachts will have two Riva offerings on display this fall in Southern California. The 38 Rivamare is a new jewel in the storied Riva crown. With her sinuous, flowing lines, dramatically flared bow and considerable beam in those broad shoulders, which tapers back to an alluring and curvaceous stern, is a fusion of legend, modernity and sheer class – a seductive, sporty motorboat that charms from the very first glance.

Melding the best of modern technology with classical Riva Yacht lines, so evocative of the French Riviera’s ‘joie de vivre’ of decades past, the Riva Rivamare elegantly transports one not only over serene water, but also through time.

48’ Dolceriva

There are boats that tell a familiar story and boats that write an entirely new one – like the 48' Dolceriva , whose profoundly rethought design and style open a whole new chapter for Riva and the historic Sarnico boatyard. However close you get, the quality and detailing just get better. The chromed brass gleams. The stainless steel is polished to a mirror sheen. Riva’s iconic lacquered mahogany—coated with layer upon layer of gloss varnish—adds to the radiance.

Rising and falling with a relaxed, languid stride that seems to flatten the sea, the pleasure of the Dolcervia comes from reveling in its style and character, and the effortless and stylish manner in which it lets you enjoy the ride.

The Riva fleet: 8 to 54 metres of pure seduction

Riva is simply the best-known nautical brand in the world. All the craft, from the 27-foot Iseo up to the imposing megayachts, are marvels of unmistakable detail. These are the fruits of well over a century of experience, where glorious Italian craft tradition meets cutting-edge technology. Riva is the emblem of a modern, sophisticated elegance expressed in an exquisite combination of ultramodern design and a judicious use of the finest woods, from mahogany to streaked, in an endless variety of colours and grains. Riva has been playing a leading role for over 60 years not only in the yachting arena but in the world of cinema too, creating stirring sensations and often stealing the show from top international stars in films too numerous to mention.

For a sublime example of this production expertise, take the painting and varnishing of the woodwork. This still follows Carlo Riva’s original method, involving 24 coats lovingly applied by hand to protect the wood from salt-water ruin and leave it with a perfect shiny finish. Likewise, the screws are still all precisely positioned in the same direction, heads painted to match the colour of the hull.

The Riva range vaunts a comprehensive array of sizes and types, with fibreglass yachts from 8 to 33 metres, including open, sportfly and flybridge models. With a dedicated team at the Superyacht Yard in Ancona, the new Riva Superyachts division designs, develops and builds displacement megayachts from 50 up to 90 metres in length.

The Riva boats: from 8 to 50 metres of seductive appeal

Riva is the best-known nautical brand in the world: when there’s a boat in a film or TV advert, it’s sure to be a Riva, whether in classic or contemporary guise. All the craft, from the 27-foot Iseo up to the light-alloy megayachts, are marvels of unmistakable detail, the fruit of well over a century of experience, where glorious Italian craft tradition meets cutting-edge technology. And they are also icons of style, with a judicious use of the finest woods from mahogany to streaked in an endless variety of colours and grains.
