Huckins Yachts For Sale

Located in Jacksonville, FL along the Ortega River, Huckins Yachts is one of the oldest custom boatbuilders in the US that is still family owned and operated under the founder’s name. Frank Pembroke Huckins founded the company in 1928 and launched his first yacht, a Commuter 25, that was sold to David M Goodrich (BF Goodrich Rubber Co.), and he was the delivery captain—running the boat from Florida to New York!

Frank Huckins was the inventor of one of the first true planing hull forms—the patented Quadraconic® hull that has been refined over the years and is still the Huckins hull form today. Unlike other yachts of that era, the Huckins hull was able to go through tall waves without severe pounding (the V-hull hadn’t been invented yet by C. Raymond Hunt). Frank Huckins also patented the process he developed for wood lamination of the oak keel used on Huckins yachts. He marketed his fast, lightweight, stable, and elegant yachts as “Fairform Flyers” to the wealthy celebrities of his day who helped create the “aura” of Huckins that has developed into “cult-like” status today.

Frank Huckins accepted a challenge by the US Navy to design fast, stable PT boats for WWII operations, and his Quadraconic® hull design was proven the best for high-speed ocean missions, with 60% less pounding during sea trials than the other contenders. One of the Huckins-built PT boats was famously piloted by J.F. Kennedy during WWII.

Another major difference in Huckins wood hull construction was the diagonally double-planked Philippine mahogany on frame. The 1947 diagonally double-planked Huckins hull didn’t take on water like the straight carvel planked hulls, that had to be “swelled” before re-launching after haul-outs. Huckins was also an early (1960s) adopter of the cold-mold process (fiberglass over epoxied wood) on jig forms as a light, strong construction method that enhanced efficient performance. And in 1975, the builder transitioned to fiberglass composite core construction for its engineering advantages such as a significant weight reduction that allowed a higher horsepower-to-weight ratio. Which in turn, increased speed and fuel-efficiency in addition to the exceptional strength and seaworthiness that modern high-tech materials like Corecell™ provide.

For the custom Huckins 45 launched in 2015, Bill Prince Yacht Design, working with Huckins chief designer Jon Hall, was responsible for engineering modifications to the hull to accommodate the ZF pod drives paired with 425hp Cummins diesels, while preserving the Quadraconic® hull form with its concave forward sections below the waterline that result in the Huckins renowned smooth ride in rough seas.

Since Huckin Yachts’ first launch in 1928, the legendary boatbuilder has been custom crafting its recognizably unique boats with high performance hulls for discerning clients who appreciate the artisanal craftsmanship and timeless elegance of Huckins Yachts. The “trademark” understated interiors are bespoken by the owner working with the Huckins design team. For Sale: Huckins 45 Sportfisherman

“As she had done hundreds, perhaps thousands, of times before, Cindy Purcell advanced the throttles on a custom-built Huckins, this one the new 45 Sportfisherman called Wombat ,” Yachting previously reported . “The 45 SF, built for a south Florida angler, is more than a fishing machine — far more.”

United Yacht Sales has the 2015 Huckins 45 SF, Wombat, listed at $845,000. It’s now also being offered at auction without reserve with Boathouse Auctions . The online auction is live now and bidding will be from June 13 th through June 17 th ,  and opening bids are expected to be between $400,000 and $450,000.

“Purcell turned the stainless-steel wheel, which is mounted on a raised wooden base to make it easy for the helmsman to use, sitting high for an excellent view of the waters and weed lines that might be ahead. This yacht banked smoothly and steadily into a turn at 28 knots. We ripped through tall wakes without so much as a thump, and Purcell noted that the bottom remains true to the patented Quadraconic hull her grandfather, the company’s founder, developed in 1928. That same concept helped the PT boats Huckins built for the U.S. Navy during World War II earn the reputation as the only truly “seagoing” planing design in the fleet. During U.S. Navy sea trials, the Huckins-built PT boat exhibited 60 percent less pounding than other competitive designs. That’s enough to make a believer out of most of us, and it’s one reason why Huckins owners prize their experiences in open water.

Twin low-hour (340) 480-horsepower Cummins diesels push this sportfisherman to a 35-knot top hop with a 28-knot fast cruise speed. Slowing to 24 knots allows for a 320-nautical-mile range, while slowing to 17 knots increases range to 350-plus nautical miles with a 10 percent reserve.

“I like to cruise Wombat at 28 knots when the conditions allow,” Purcell said, “but with a top speed of 35 knots, some owners might like to cruise at an even 30 knots.”

Having a high level of fishability was a top priority while designing Wombat . A number of features reinforce this trait, including a Palm Beach Towers custom marlin tower, three flush-deck insulated fish bins with macerators, an Eskimo ice maker, two 28-foot Rupp outriggers, eight rod holders in the gunwales, saltwater and freshwater washdowns and a four-rod rocket launcher.

The all-weather bridge deck is up a few steps from the cockpit with an EZ2CY enclosure, air conditioning, two inboard-facing bench seats, a single-seat helm forward and to starboard, and a forward-facing companion bench seat to port.

Belowdecks, owners and guests will find a salon and galley amidships, The galley’s Corian countertop is to starboard and is equipped with a Sub-Zero double-­drawer refrigerator and freezer, a 1.5-cubic-foot convection microwave and a Kenyon Lite-Touch two-burner electric stove. An L-shaped sofa to port has room for five and a loose coffee table.  “The interior is understated, a Huckins trademark. Hand-selected, satin-­finished mahogany woodwork joins sumptuous fabrics in a tastefully traditional and contemporary execution.”

Sleeping accommodations include two staterooms. The forepeak master has a walkaround centerline queen berth with under-berth stowage and a 22-inch flat-screen TV. The guest space is abaft the master and to starboard with upper and lower berths. To port, the forward head has a separate shower compartment.

Accommodations & Layout

Sleeps 4 in two comfortable staterooms, a guest stateroom forward and the master stateroom aft each with full head including a stall shower. A spacious saloon is located mid-ship with an open adjacent galley. There is a large bridge deck with centerline helm offering 360 degrees visibility, wide side decks and a huge cockpit.

Master Stateroom

The master stateroom is aft and down three steps from the saloon. There are large single berths to port and starboard, a large hanging wardrobe, a chest of drawers and a vanity. There is access to the cockpit via four steps up on the centerline of aft bulkhead. A spacious head with stall shower adjoins this stateroom. There are four large portlights for light and ventilation.

Guest Stateroom

The spacious guest stateroom is in the forepeak with large v-berths, a large hanging locker, and an adjacent head compartment. There is a large overhead hatch and five portlights for light and ventilation.

Deckhouse/Saloon

The spacious saloon is located down three steps from the bridge deck and features large windows port and starboard for unlimited visibility while at anchor or underway. Three forward windows add to the brightness of the saloon and the adjacent galley. There is an L-shaped settee to port and an occasional chairs opposite with a coffee table.

The galley is forward and down one step from the saloon, and aft up one step from the forward stateroom. It is full width of the boat, and is open to the saloon creating a bright and airy layout. The galley is equipped with a fridge freezer combo refrigerator, Shipmate propane three burner range, double ss sink and Paloma instant hot water heater.

The master stateroom head has a VacuFlush head with a 20 gallon holding tank, and the guest head forward features a Raritan Crown head with a 10 gallon holding tank. Both heads have stall showers.

The bridge deck is up and aft four steps from the saloon. The helm is on the centerline with good 360 degree visibility. A built-in companion seat is to port with an accessible bar on the back side. There is a built-in settee on the starboard side aft, and a opening to the cockpit on the port side with three steps down. Access gates to the side decks on port and starboard side of bridge. Teak bridge sole. Todd helm chair with custom built-in cabinet below. Bridge deck seat cushions. Dual Buell air horns powered with dedicated compressor.

The hull construction is double diagonal planked 3/8" Philippine mahogany bonded with resorcinol resin and sheathed with 20 oz. fiberglass cloth set in epoxy. All decks and cabin tops are sheathed in 10 oz. fiberglass cloth set in epoxy. The bilges are epoxy resin coated and are compartmentalized with four water tight bulkheads.

The current and third owner has owned this vessel this vessel for over 10 years, and over this period has continually upgraded and maintained. Upgrades include the repowering in 1992, replacement of all window glass with tinted glass, rebedding of all cleats, chocks and deck fittings, interior refinishing and exterior repainting.

The boat was repowered in 1992 by Huckins with Caterpillar 3208 TAs at 375 hp each. Currently there is approximately 3500 hours on these engines. New universal drive shafts were installed in 1998, and the Huckins vee-drives rebuilt in 2002. The current replaced both shaft and bearing in 2016.
