Palma de Mallorca Yacht Charter | Things to Do

  • Nightlife. In Palma de Mallorca, many districts offer exciting nightlife. There are numerous restaurants, bars, and live music venues to try while visiting. Have drinks at Cafe Atlantico Cocktail Bar or dance the night away at Pacha Mallorca or Kaelum Club.
  • Shopping . Stores offer leather goods, handicrafts, jewelry, and more. San Miguel and Carrer Streets are some of the best places for shopping.
  • Beaches . For seclusion and swimming, try La Cova Beach. Kayaking and windsurfing are excellent at Playa d’en Bossa, and Es Portell Beach is popular with surfers due to the big waves there.
  • Hiking . Mallorca’s landscape offers some excellent hiking routes for all skill levels.

Palma de Mallorca’s incredible food scene is one of the main reasons for choosing to charter a yacht here. From fish and shellfish dishes, like gambas pil-pil or espetada , to a wide range of meats, there is something for every taste.

The abundant seafood and meat options provide an excellent opportunity for tasting local cuisine on your yacht charter. For the vegans and vegetarians out there, don’t worry! Plenty of restaurants serve fresh fruit and vegetables and vegan and vegetarian options.

While visiting, try some traditional foods such as:

  • Pamboli – a traditional sandwich made with Majorcan bread, olive oil, and tomato.
  • Ensaimada – traditional sweet pastry topped with powdered sugar or filled with chocolate, cream, or fruit.
  • Sobrasada – Cured pork sausage that is typical of Mallorca.
  • Bunyols – (sweet pastries) Bunyols are commonly made of boiled potatoes, flour, eggs, butter or lard, yeast, and sugar; they are fried in hot oil and then sprinkled with sugar. These sweet treats are typically made in autumn.

Where to go mega-yacht-spotting in Mallorca

mega yacht spotting in Mallorca

With its prime position in the glittering Mediterranean and ever-growing popularity amongst celebrities, tech moguls and the rich and the famous, Mallorca has established a position as the port of choice for the worlds most fabulous megayachts. The island builds on its reputation and invests further in creating state-of-the-art facilities and booming service industry around them. Even if you don't yet own a magnificent boat, make sure you include a trip to one of the marinas in Mallorca to get your fix of yacht-spotting! There are over a dozen marinas in Mallorca, but three of them stand out if only super-yachts float your boat (pun very much intended!). Palma de Mallorca: Real Club Nautico & Club de Mar Palma has two neighbouring marinas located right in the heart of the city center. Real Club Nautico is the oldest and biggest marina in the Balearic Islands. It's also the one best known for hosting an annual Copa del Rey Regatta, where one of the crews is skippered by the reigning King of Spain, Felipe VI. The event takes place at the end of July - try to arrange your trip to coincide and get a glimpse of the competition. Club de Mar is just very slightly west of the Palma Cathedral and Real Club Nautico. It boasts facilities for mooring the biggest yachts, up to 135m in length (plus a waiting dock for boats up to 350m). You can expect to see the most magnificent and biggest of super-yachts here. Clients include Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs' heirs, David Geffen, and a whole host of tech moguls, industrialists and celebrities. Both 'Clubs' are easily accessible and a perfect place for yacht-spotting - this is where the biggest boats are moored. We particularly recommend an evening walk when the boats are gloriously lit up! Puerto Portals About a 10-minute drive west of Palma is a slightly smaller, but equally exclusive Puerto Portals. It's the axis of a whole upmarket neighbourhood and very much an engine for the whole local economy. Known as the ‘millionaires’ marina', it's not just about the boats, it's a great place to spend the day. With plenty of luxury boutiques, pop-up shops (like Elizabeth Hurley's beach pop-up), lots of restaurants and bars, it's the ultimate place to see and be seen. It's also known for organising fabulous events, including an annual Christmas Market - make sure you have a look at the agenda to plan your visit. Port Adriano A little further west of Palma and Puerto Portals lies the last marina on our list. It's a fairly new addition to Mallorca, having been built in 2007. But what a spectacular addition it is! Possibly the most technologically advanced marina in the Med, it was designed by Philippe Starck. The main building was shaped to resemble a mega-yacht itself. It melts into it's surrounding, with the woodwork mirroring that on the decks of moored yachts, bollards and lighting being reflecting the design of the yachts themselves. It's a particularly great place for yacht-spotting as it can accommodate boats up to 80m long, having had the floor of the harbour dredged to create enough depth for them. Port Adriano was built to become a lifestyle axis for the neighbourhood, so you can expect plenty of shopping, dining and events. Make sure you plan a few hours to spend on your visit.

Other than the marinas, Mallorca offers plenty of places to go yacht-spotting. During the high season pretty much any cove will be speckled with a few at least. But if you'd like to make yourself more comfortable, buy a day pass in a hotel like Hospes Maricel, Nixe Palace or Pure Salt Port Adriano . Each of them will let you lounge comfortably by the pool, while a yacht parade passes by! Photo by Arno Senoner on Unsplash

Guide to Mallorca

Idyllic Mediterranean beauty

The largest of the Balearic Islands , Mallorca (Majorca) is perfect yacht charter territory thanks to its turquoise-blue waters, secret coves, soft golden sands, soaring mountaintops and a vibrant, cosmopolitan capital. Wonderfully diverse with many hidden gems to uncover, this magnificent island is a must-see destination.

Mallorca sits off the east coast of Spain, bathing in the sparkling Mediterranean Sea alongside her Balearic sisters: Ibiza , Menorca and Formentera . A stunning coastline of bone-white beaches, pine-flecked bays and deserted coves is undoubtedly the island’s main draw, but you’ll be enticed to extend your stay by the exquisite natural beauty of the island’s hinterland.

Located along the south coast, the Spanish city of Palma de Mallorca is the island’s thriving capital. World-class superyacht facilities here make it easy for yacht-goers to step ashore and experience the city’s designer shopping, exclusive restaurants, thriving art scene and magnificent gothic architecture.

Elsewhere on the south coast, sandy stretches backed by pine trees await your arrival, while idyllic coves and secluded beaches are sheltered by rocky faces in the east, soaring cliffs carve out hidden paradises in the west and, in the north, the peaks of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains provide a spectacular backdrop to the gorgeous bays of Badia de Pollenca and Badi d’Alcudia.

Mallorca’s interior is certainly resplendent in natural wonders. As well as the limestone mountain range of the north, there are fertile plains with olive groves, windmills and old market towns, monasteries atop rolling green hills, vineyards producing world-class wines, and the nature reserves of Sa Dragonera and Albufera.

Such landscapes ensure Mallorca has something to offer everybody on a Mediterranean yacht charter , from relaxing on the beach and trying out the latest watersports to hiking and cycling. There is also an exciting food scene from the cosmopolitan eateries of the city to the hearty dishes of the traditional inland restaurants to coastal bistros serving the catch of the day.

Discover what this Spanish island can offer to you and your family by getting in touch with your preferred charter broker to discuss itinerary options and the best places and times to visit. Also, be sure to have a browse of all the crewed yachts available for charter in Spain .

Italian authorities open investigation into doomed superyacht Bayesian

Italian authorities have opened an investigation into what happened on the doomed superyacht as a Kiwi captain is grilled for several hours.

Italian authorities have opened an investigation into what happened on doomed superyacht Bayesian after it sank off Sicily — with the captain grilled for two hours.

The body of billionaire tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch is among the five bodies divers recovered on Wednesday from the wreckage of his $58 million luxury yacht.

The 59-year-old was said to be trapped by two mattresses inside a cabin on the superyacht, according to Italian publication La Repubblica.

His 18-year-old daughter Hannah is reportedly still missing.

Prosecutors have been interviewing survivors from the tragedy, including Kiwi captain James Cutfield, 51.

The 56-metre yacht had been anchored 700m offshore on the Italian island of Sicily when it capsized during a violent sunrise storm on Monday.

Fifteen people were rescued, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, a mother with her one-year-old baby , and New Zealand captain James Cutfield who is recovering in hospital.

The 51-year-old, who managed to escape from the vessel, was interrogated by police for several hours, Giornale Di Sicilia reported.

Divers have recovered five of the six missing passengers. Picture: Alberto Pizzoli/AFP

He told Italian media of the abrupt nature of the water spout that made a death trap out of the superyacht.

“We just didn’t see it coming,” he said.

There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing by Mr Cutfield.

Mr Cutfield’s brother Mark told the NZ Herald his brother was a “very good sailor” and was “very well respected” in the Mediterranean.

He said he is currently in hospital but was not suffering from injuries “too dramatic”.

“He’s safe, he’s okay.”

Mr Cutfield’s wife had flown from their home in Palma, Mallorca, to be by his side in Italy and has been updating his family back home in New Zealand.

Billionaire Mike Lynch’s body was pulled from the water on Wednesday. Picture: Ben Gurr/ POOL / AFP

According to the NZ Herald , he had been a captain on luxury yachts for eight years and had previously been working on them and involved in building them for the past 30 years in various locations around the Mediterranean.

The publication reported that before Mr Cutfield worked for the British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, he had worked for a Turkish billionaire.

Mark described his brother as a “top sailor” having raced 470s competitively in his youth.

Mr Cutfield’s interrogation comes after divers found that the keel, a crucial part of the boat’s structure which helps keep it balanced, had been raised when the yacht was anchored off shore.

His wife Angela Bacare (together, above) survived the tragedy.

The keel operates as the main structural backbone of the yacht, filled with heavy materials, keeping it balanced and helping it to correct in stormy waters.

Dan Green, Research & Investigations lead at eSysman SuperYachts, told The Mirror that if the keel was raised it would harm the boat’s stability and could explain why it sank so quickly.

“The keel when lowered increases the stability of the vessel,” he said.

The 22 people onboard were reportedly celebrating the tech tycoon’s acquittal in a fraud trial. Picture: yachtcharterfleet.com

“When raised, this reduces stability as the centre of gravity is raised, as the keel is also weighted with lead.

“Another effect of the keel being in the up position is the vessel will not self-right if it leans far over.

“If you add to that the possibility of hatches being opened on the vessel that would explain why it’s saying [sinking] so quickly.”

The UK’s marine accident investigation branch also sent four inspectors.

Matthew Schanck, from the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told AFP what happened was “pretty unprecedented” after the yacht was struck by a “black swan” waterspout during a storm.

UK meteorologist Peter Inness described a waterspout as a “narrow column of rotating air below a thunderstorm that occurs over water”.

Like tornadoes, they suck up air in a rotating motion. Many are fairly inconsequential, but some can pack winds of more than 100km per hour, Mr Inness.

Jean-Marie Dumon, a former naval officer now with the GICAN, the French maritime industry association, added that conditions with winds of 100kph or more can “create completely anarchic sea conditions which can cause capsizing”.

An Bord waren 22 Menschen. 15 konnten gerettet und an Land gebracht werden. | PERINI NAVI PRESS OFFICE / HANDO

Breaking news, all about the $40m bayesian yacht that capsized, leaving 6 dead and 1 still missing.

The massive superyacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Italy on Monday won numerous awards for its sleek interior design — and was sold to its original owner for nearly $40 million.

The luxury sailing ship was carrying 22 people when it capsized and sank during a fierce storm early Monday.

A handout picture, provided by Perini Navi Press Office, shows the ''Bayesian'', the 56-metre sailing unit sunk in a violent storm off Palermo, Italy, 19 August 2024

The bodies of five of six missing passengers, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , 69, have been recovered. His daughter, 18-year-old Hannah, is the only one of six known killed in the tragedy yet to be found, a source close to the rescue operation told Reuters.

The ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, has also been confirmed dead.

Divers continued searching the wreckage of the 184-foot-long, British-flagged vessel, previously called Salute, on Wednesday after discovering four of the bodies.

When it was built in 2008, the Bayesian had the tallest aluminum mast in the world, standing at 237 feet, earning it the award for best exterior styling at the World Superyacht Awards in 2009, the Telegraph reported.

The sprawling superyacht’s interior, decorated with sleek, minimalist furnishings created by Remi Tessier, has also won numerous awards.

The ship, which accommodated 12 guests, had a master bedroom and three double and two twin bedrooms.

It also featured beige sofas, dark wood furnishings, and a teak deck equipped with a large canvas awning to keep guests cool, according to the outlet.

Some of the ship’s styling, including thin brown pillars and miniature terra cotta sculptures, was inspired by Japanese culture.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily:

The extravagant ship won best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008 and was also voted one of the best large sailing yachts at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards, according to the outlet.

The yacht’s original owner, John Groenewoud, a Dutch real estate developer, reportedly bought the ship for £30 million ($39 million) when it was built. In 2014, he sold the ship with an asking price of £27 million ($35 million).

The Bayesian is currently owned by Revtom, a company that listed Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, as its legal owner.

It was named after the Bayesian statistical model that helps financial investors calculate risk — the subject of Lynch’s PhD that later helped him build his empire.

The vessel, operated by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, had twin 965hp MTU engines, which gave it a range of 3,600 nautical miles at 13 to 15 knots (14 to 17 mph).

An ambulance carries the body of a person which was found at the scene where the luxury yacht sank.

RSB Rigging carried out rig service works on the ship with Astilleros de Mallorca, a shipyard facility in Palma, in November 2016.

The Bayesian returned in September 2020 for scheduled service works, including having its mast removed and reinstalled.

Steve Branagh, managing director of RSB Rigging, told the Telegraph: “At this time, our deepest sympathies go out to the friends and families of all those affected by this dreadful tragedy.”

As the Mallorcan and global nautical community struggles to comes to terms with this week’s tragic accident in Sicily a leading member of the local nautical industry has set up a crowdfunding site to raise funds for the crew.

The skipper behind the site states: “I would like the yachting community and anyone else to donate to support the crew and the fellow crew member who sadly lost his life in the line of duty. The funds will be share equally amongst all of the crew to support them in the mental, physical and financial challenges that lie ahead. I hope the outcome of our help allows the crew to move forward with their lives and can rely on the support of our yachting community.” And the response has already been extremely positive.

The nautical industry in Mallorca, the Balearics and across the world has been left stunned and in deep shock after the British-flagged Bayesian , a 56-metre-long (184-ft) superyacht capsized during a fierce, pre-dawn tempest on Monday carrying 22 passengers and crew and was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo.

Fifteen people survived, the body of one person who died was recovered promptly, and this morning (Thursday) one person remains unaccounted for after five bodies were recovered , including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter and Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International. Another of the 15 survivors has been confirmed as Dutch national crewman Tjis Koopmans.

Dive teams carry out searches of Bayesian yacht's wreck

Not only had Bayesian been based in Mallorca , in particular the Club de Mar in Palma and Port Adriano , for many summer seasons, according to nautical industry sources consulted by the Bulletin, she also underwent regular refits in Palma . The senior members of the crew are very well known on the island, in particular the only confirmed fatality to date, Canadian-Antiguan chef Recaldo Thomas.

On Monday night at 8pm, yachts in Palma and across the Balearics sounded their horns in tribute to all those involved in the accident and since news of Thomas’s body having been recovered, the industry is in deep shock.

“ He (Recaldo Thomas) was larger than life, always had a smile and was extremely well known in Mallorca, he was the life and soul of the yachting industry and very professional, just like the rest of the crew. They were all some of the very best in the industry and I used to not only work with them but drink with them too,” one superyacht skipper told the Bulletin, not wishing to be named.

British-flagged superyacht Bayesian sunk in Sicily was based in Mallorca

“ We’re all in deep shock, especially those working on the sailing yachts , it’s tragic and we all feel for those on board and if a crowd funding page is set up for Recaldo I am sure the yachting community will be very supportive and I am sure the yacht’s management team will be. It’s going to be very tough for the survivors to get through this and then move forward. It’s just shocking,” he said.

One dead, six missing after sailboat sinks off Palermo

The brother of the skipper, James Cutfield, has told the New Zealand Herald that his brother was a “very good sailor” and was “very well respected” in the Mediterranean. He said he is currently in hospital but was not suffering from injuries “too dramatic”. He said that they had been called by Cutfield’s wife Cristina before the news broke so they would know he was not among the dead. She had flown from their home in Palma to be with him in Italy and has been updating the New Zealand family.

Cutfield had been involved in building ships for 30 years in the Mediterranean, as well as racing 470s in his youth, before becoming the captain of luxury yachts eight years ago. He had reportedly been with a Turkish billionaire before working for Mr Lynch.

Witnesses said the boat disappeared beneath the waves in a matter of minutes, baffling naval experts who said a boat as large as the Bayesian would have been designed to stay afloat for many hours despite taking on water. Fifteen people escaped before it capsized and the body of one person who died was swiftly recovered. That left six passengers unaccounted for - Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah; Judy and Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

However, there was little chance of finding more survivors , rescuers said. “The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” said Salvatore Cocina, head of civil protection in Sicily. The boat was lying at a depth of 49 metres (160 feet), giving divers only 8-10 minutes at the wreck site before they had to resurface. Entering the boat was also proving difficult, said the fire brigade, which is leading the search operation. “Inside the sailing ship the spaces are very confined, and if you hit an obstacle it is very complicated to move forward, just as it is very difficult to find alternative routes,” said fire spokesman Luca Cari.

One official, who declined to be named, said the divers had opened one access point, but this did not mean they could easily reach all parts of the submerged vessel. Fire department diver Marco Tilotta told reporters the boat appeared to be intact and was lying on its right side . Divers had not ascertained whether the 72-metre-long mast had snapped somewhere along its length during the tempest. Karsten Borner, the skipper of a boat that had been moored alongside the Bayesian, said the yacht flipped on its side soon after the storm hit and sank within two minutes, giving those below deck little time to get to safety.

The captain of a super yacht that sunk off the coast of Sicily with Mike Lynch on board is a "well-respected" seafarer who has worked most of his life on boats, said his brother.

James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealander, was in charge of the Bayesian, with 22 people on board, when it sank off the coast of Sicily during a storm. Search crews have carried out further inspections of the wreckage of the luxury yacht as the hunt for six people feared trapped in the vessel continues with one body found so far.

After the tragedy in the early hours of Monday morning , Mr Cutfield told Italian media: “We didn’t see it coming.” He was described as "limp" with shock as he waited outside an emergency room in the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese.

It is understood the £30million yacht was little more than 700 metres from the harbour when its mast snapped in the storm, throwing it off balance. One body has been recovered belonging to the ship's chef, Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas.

The captain's brother Mark told the New Zealand Herald his brother was a “very good sailor” and was “very well respected” in the Mediterranean. He said he is currently in hospital but was not suffering from injuries “too dramatic”. He said that they had been called by Mr Cutfield’s wife Cristina before the news broke so they would know he was not among the dead.

She had flown from their home in Palma, Majorca, to be with him in Italy and has been updating the New Zealand family. Mr Cutfield had been involved in building ships for 30 years in the Mediterranean, as well as racing 470s in his youth, before becoming the captain of luxury yachts eight years ago. He had reportedly been with a Turkish billionaire before working for Mr Lynch.

The Italian Coastguard has not ruled out the possibility that those missing, including technology tycoon Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, may still be alive, with experts speculating air pockets could have formed as the yacht sank. Among those also missing are Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Inspections of the yacht’s internal hull took place on Wednesday morning. A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) have arrived in Porticello, where they are expected to look at the site of the sinking.

super yachts palma mallorca

The MAIB is looking into what happened because the yacht Bayesian was flying a British flag, it is understood. The Italian Coastguard said the MAIB is not involved in the search for the missing people and that it has not been requested to assist.

The wreckage of Bayesian is resting on the seabed off the coast at a depth of 50m (164ft). Fire crews described the operation as “complex”, with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts. Dr Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a senior lecturer in mechanical, biomedical and design engineering at Aston University, said the next 24 hours are “crucial” to find survivors trapped inside the wreck.

He said: “The speed at which the vessel sank (a few minutes, according to survivor and witness accounts) and the fact that it remains intact and on its side could favour the formation of small air pockets inside. But whether air pockets formed on the Bayesian is simply impossible to predict.”

Kiwi captain grilled by Italian police, divers recover more bodies from superyacht

- James Cutfield, 51, originally of North Shore, Auckland, captained the sunken superyacht and has been reportedly grilled by Italian prosecutors.

- Divers have recovered the bodies of four more people, allegedly including  British tech tycoon Mike Lynch .

- Rescuers continue searching the yacht on the bottom of the sea floor .

The Kiwi who captained  the luxury yacht that sunk off the coast of Italy  has reportedly been grilled for multiple hours by Italian prosecutors.

New Zealand citizen James Cutfield, 51, captained the Bayesian,  the boat that sank off the coast of Porticello, near Palermo during a storm.

According to Italian media outlet Giornale Di Sicilia, Cutfield was questioned for two hours while prosecutors attempted to piece together the super yachts’ final moments.

Prosecutors are expected to interview other survivors as well.

It comes as divers searching the Bayesian have found five bodies and recovered four of them, according to local authorities.

Among those bodies identified are  tech mogul Mike Lynch , Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and Morgan Stanley International chair Jonathan Bloomer, Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported.

A woman’s body had also been found. Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morvillo’s wife Neda and Bloomer’s wife Judy were among those missing.

Salvo Cocina, the director-general of Sicily’s civil protection agency, confirmed that five bodies had been found but only four brought to shore. One person remained missing, he said.

Searches had finished for the day and would resume on Thursday, Cocina said.

CNN reporters saw four body bags being moved from rescue boats into ambulances at the port of Porticello, near where the boat sank, though authorities did not provide details about those inside.

Rescuers have spent days trying to reach those remaining inside the boat but have been hampered by the depth of the vessel and debris blocking passageways.

The six had been missing since the 56m yacht sank amid a freak storm off the coast of Sicily on Monday, with 22 people on board. Fifteen had been rescued and one, the boat’s chef, was killed.

Mark said they had received a call from James’ wife Cristina before the news broke so they would not worry about their brother’s life. She had flown from their home in Palma, Mallorca, to be by his side in Italy and has been updating the New Zealand family.

James had been a captain on luxury yachts for eight years and had previously been working on them and involved in building them for the past 30 years in various locations around the Mediterranean.

He said before he worked for Lynch, he had worked for a Turkish billionaire.

Mark said James was a “top sailor” in his youth and raced 470s competitively in his youth.

When the Bayesian went down, James was among the 15 people who were rescued.
