Tunisia: superyacht arrival procedures
Now tunisia is back on the tourist map, what do captains need to know about customs and immigration formalities.
Following last month's announcement that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has lifted travel restrictions on most of Tunisia, SuperyachtNews asks Kim Williams, co-founder of Yacht Services Tunisia, about the pertinent arrival formalities that superyachts are likely to experience when visiting the country.
Q: What information do agents typically need from yachts visiting Tunisia and how far in advance do these particulars need to be arranged?
A: Both the yacht and crew customs manifests need to be presented to the agent on the yacht’s arrival in Tunisia. If the yacht can send a draft of these manifests to the agent in advance, it means the agents can review the documents and make any corrections or minimise any issues before arrival. This ensures the entry procedure in Tunisia can be completed with the minimum of effort for the captain and the rest of the crew.
Whenever possible, we advise the captain in advance of the yachts arrival on the customs requirements for both the yacht and each crewmember. Yachts that arrive with no prior warning may have items on board that are actually forbidden from entering the country – this is the most common issue we work with. If a yacht does have any of these items on board, then the authorities usually understand and view it as a simple oversight that can be corrected immediately.
Q: When are yachts likely to encounter problems during the customs and immigration process and how do they minimise these?
A: The Tunisian government has worked very hard to ensure that yachts visiting Tunisia are not burdened with excessive paperwork. Superyachts up to 110m that visit the marinas are only required to submit the very minimum and this is far less than the usual requirements for visiting a commercial port in other countries. While there are a number of forms to be completed for various Tunisian authorities, we can deal with this on behalf of the yacht, thereby ensuring that the yacht and crew enter and leave Tunisia with all the required customs paperwork.
The question of legal employment of the crew only comes to the attention of the Tunisian immigration authorities if the yacht stays in Tunisia for over three months, and if the crewmember is in need of a visa.
Q: How can a more constructive relationship between crew and yacht agent improve the efficiency of this process?
A: Having an honest and transparent relationship between the yacht and the agent is really important. We can usually resolve any problems before they arise if we know of possible issues in advance. This allows us to advise on the best course of action to be taken and minimise any unnecessary disruption for the yacht, captain and crew.

Marina Bizerte satisfies part of the demand for yacht berths on the Mediterranean, especially for those looking to exit the EU for re-entry under temporary admission purposes while keeping the authentic and relaxed Bizertin way of life.
Bizerte, the antique Hippo Zaritus, is located in the northern point of Tunisia in Africa and has an important historical background. The central location as a crossroad between eastern and western Mediterranean Seas has given Bizerte a privileged port position since antique times.

With the sea on its doorstep and the magnificent adjacent old town, Marina Bizerte combines an outstanding destination with a world-class marina featuring more than 800 secure berths ranging from 10 to 150 metres.
Complemented by spacious waterside residences, restaurants, lively bars and a wide range of sports, leisure and cultural activities, Marina Bizerte was created for all aspects of the yacht owner, crew and guests’ experience. Yacht-friendly legislation offers some of the best benefits in the Mediterranean, while 24/7 Yacht Assistance helps with everything.

“They were sort of just at the mercy of the elements. They would have been moving around quite uncomfortably. It would have been particularly windy, noisy, probably quite wet as well.”

Brisbane, Australia (CNN) — Two people have been rescued after a terrifying night at sea as six-meter (20-foot) waves tossed their stricken yacht nearly 200 miles (322 kilometers) off Australia’s eastern coast as they drifted at speed towards New Zealand.
Authorities were first alerted to the crew’s crisis around 1pm on Monday, when they deployed a distress beacon, but it was hours before the first rescue helicopters located the vessel.
The 20-meter yacht, the Spirit of Mateship, had lost power and communications and was being hit by winds of up to 90 kilometers an hour (56 mph) as well as waves up to six meters high.
“(The helicopter’s crew) were able to fly above the yacht, and they could communicate via radio to the yacht, but they were unable to pick them up,” said Ben Flight, duty manager at the Australian Maritime Safety Authority Response Center.
Another rescue attempt was later abandoned due to rough seas, forcing the two people – a man, 60, and woman, 48 – to spend what Flight described as a “horrible” night at sea.
“They weren’t injured, but the vessel had suffered a mechanical issue of some kind, and they couldn’t steer, and they couldn’t make their own way through the water, so they were drifting, and they were taking on water as well. So, they were in quite a serious situation,” said Flight.
“They were sort of just at the mercy of the elements. They would have been moving around quite uncomfortably. It would have been particularly windy, noisy, probably quite wet as well.”
Two Australian Navy ships – HMAS Arunta and HMAS Canberra – answered calls for help, as well as Royal Australian Air Force C-130J Hercules aircraft, according to the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
The ships, along with a nearby merchant vessel, monitored the yacht’s location overnight, and the rescue resumed in the early hours of the morning, when conditions had eased.
NSW Police vessel Nemesis arrived at the yacht about 3 a.m. Tuesday and deployed a smaller boat to rescue the sailors around 7:30 a.m. in choppy seas with swells of four meters to five meters.
“I don’t imagine they would have got any rest overnight, so I imagine they’d be quite tired and very relieved to be rescued,” Flight said.
Flight said the outcome would have been much worse if the crew hadn’t deployed the distress beacon, which issues a satellite alert to advise the rescue coordination center of their location.
The Spirit of Mateship has competed in the prestigious Sydney to Hobart yacht race several times, crewed by wounded veterans and army personnel.
Together they raised money to support army veterans. However, the yacht has changed hands since then, according to Flight.
The rescued sailors are expected to arrive back in Sydney Tuesday night after a 12-hour voyage.

Essex Police rescue two people from stricken yacht after sudden storm
An Essex Police Marine Unit rescued two people earlier this month when their yacht got into difficulties off the coast of Clacton after a sudden storm whipped up.
Roy Harris and his partner Caroline Wilson were sailing back to the River Crouch from Kent on Sunday 25 August when the storm hit.
With his yacht, the Samphire, taking on water and its sail rope torn, Mr Harris radioed a PAN-PAN message to alert nearby boats and emergency services that their vessel had an urgent problem.
Sergeant Alex Southgate, PC John Perry and special constable Scott Mccabe were on Operation Wave-Breaker patrols in the force rib Sentinel when they picked up the distress call.
Working with the Dover Coastguard Operations Centre, they located the 40ft-yacht near an off-shore windfarm, four miles off Clacton.
Due to the weather conditions and the yacht’s damaged sail, the rescue journey took more than two hours in rough seas – it would usually take 45 minutes in normal conditions.

American tech giant Hewlett Packard has said it is to continue with legal proceedings "through to their conclusion" to seek up to £3bn in damages from late British billionaire Mike Lynch's estate in the UK.
The company had been seeking compensation over its acquisition of British tech firm Autonomy amid claims of fraud masterminded by its co-founder Mr Lynch to inflate the company's value.
The firm won a UK High Court civil claim against Mr Lynch in 2022, accusing him and his former finance director, Sushovan Hussain, of fraud over its $11bn (£8.37bn) takeover of his software company in 2011.
Mr Lynch, 59, who had denied any wrongdoings, and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, were among seven people who died after his luxury superyacht Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily last month.
Fifteen others survived, including Mr Lynch's widow, Angela Bacares, who could now be liable for the damages claim in London.
In a statement, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) said: "In 2022, an English High Court judge ruled that HPE had substantially succeeded in its civil fraud claims against Dr Lynch and Mr Hussain.
"A damages hearing was held in February 2024 and the judge's decision regarding damages due to HPE will arrive in due course.
"It is HPE's intention to follow the proceedings through to their conclusion."
HPE is seeking damages of up to $4bn (£3bn), with the judge set to rule on the final sum soon.

The judge has already ruled the amount payable in damages would be "substantially less" than HPE had sought.
Mr Lynch was cleared in a separate criminal fraud trial over the Autonomy case in the US in June.
The boat trip had been organised as a celebration of Mr Lynch's acquittal in that case.

Crew members on Mike Lynch yacht tell of moments it sank off Sicily

Crew members on Mike Lynch’s yacht have spoken of the moments when a storm sank the vessel off Sicily and their efforts to help save passengers, after a disaster that killed the British tech tycoon and six other people.
Matthew Griffiths, who was on watch duty on the night of the disaster two weeks ago, told investigators that the crew members did everything they could to save those on board the Bayesian, according to comments reported by Italian news agency Ansa on Saturday.
Griffiths, the boat’s captain James Cutfield, and ship engineer Tim Parker Eaton have been placed under investigation by the Italian authorities for potential manslaughter and shipwreck. Being investigated does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will follow.
“I woke up the captain when the wind was at 20 knots (23 mph/37 kph). He gave orders to wake everyone else,” Ansa quoted Griffiths as saying.
“The ship tilted and we were thrown into the water. Then we managed to get back up and tried to rescue those we could,” he added, describing the events of the early hours of Aug. 19, when the Bayesian had been anchored off the Sicilian port of Porticello.
“We were walking on the walls (of the boat). We saved who we could, Cutfield also saved the little girl and her mother,” he said, referring to passenger Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter. In all there were 15 survivors of the wreck.
Cutfield exercised his right to remain silent when questioned by prosecutors on Tuesday, his lawyers said, saying he was “worn out” and that they needed more time to build a defence case.
Before this, Cutfield gave a similar description to Griffiths’ to investigators, according to comments reported on Sunday by Italian daily Il Corriere della Sera.
Cutfield said the boat tilted by 45 degrees and stayed in that position for some time, then it suddenly fell completely to the right, the newspaper reported.
Parker Eaton had not previously commented on the investigation. On Sunday, Il Corriere quoted him as saying that all doors and hatches were closed when the storm hit the boat, except one giving access to the engine room.
That door was located on the side opposite to the tilting and so could not be a factor causing the sinking, he said.
Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano said last week that the vessel was most likely hit by a “downburst", a very strong downward wind.
The sinking has puzzled naval marine experts, who said a vessel like the Bayesian, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini, should have withstood the storm and, in any case, should not have sunk as quickly as it did.
Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near Palermo, have said their investigation will take time, with the wreck yet to be salvaged from the sea.
