No compromise for the 55m M/Y Shinkai, Philippe Briand explains why
The new 55m yacht Shinkai is the eighth superyacht to be launched by Philippe Briand’s Vitruvius Yachts and the second designed for this owner. Shinkai was recently transferred from Feadship’s construction hallway in Aalsmeer to the builder’s outside dock for final outfitting ahead of her sea trials. As to the construction and co-naval architecture, these were carried out by Feadship De Vries, while Daniela Boutsen provided her interior design. Together, the eminent group has pushed the boundaries of what might be considered both a superyacht and an explorer at the same time. And herein lay the challenge for Briand and his team.
“This is a special project for us, as Shinkai is the second yacht that we have designed for her owner. In fact, he was the first yachtsman to embrace the benefits of Vitruvius’s efficient hulls,” says Philippe Briand. The result is a 55m, 974GT motor yacht demonstrating the following characteristics: high-tech, comfort, explorer layout, aesthetic, sustainability.
Adventurous Shinkai can reach the most remote places on the planet. She is ice-classed and stabilized by a vast mono gyroscope, which has never been specified on a yacht of this scale before. The 23-tonne gyroscope is particularly important for operations of the submersible, which needs a perfectly stable launching platform. It is also beneficial when navigating through waters at high latitudes, replacing conventional fin stabilisers which are at risk of being damaged by ice and flotsam, and are inefficient at low speeds.
A departure from the characteristic low-profile aesthetic of Vitruvius Yachts, Shinkai spans four decks plus an observatory setting, in order that the spaces inside meet the detailed requirements of the very experienced client. The owner’s cabin is positioned forward in the superstructure, with an exceptional area of 73sqm and a 135-degree view through full-height reinforced windows. There are four further guest suites, while seven cabins for 12 crew complete the accommodations.
Shinkai carries a wide variety serious toys, such as her 7,400kg U-Boat Worx submersible for three passengers. “I imagine it would have made Jean Jacques Cousteau jealous of such bright possibility to explore underwater!” adds Briand. The yacht’s design includes an extended aft deck to support the toys that make for a truly adventurous expedition, including 4×4 land vehicle, a large limousine tender, and multiple robust RIBs.
The Vitruvius “touch of design” assures the seamless integration of both “facets” of the project: an attractive superyacht and a powerful explorer. The high freeboard and superstructure are cut by a set of longitudinal lines, each having its own movement and raison d’être .
With Shinkai ’s far-reaching cruising plans to explore the planet comes the responsibility to be environmentally sensitive in her operations, which Philippe Briand took into account when designing her hull lines. Even with the yacht’s generous displacement of 974GT, her hull resistance has been optimised to deliver a reasonable fuel consumption of 19.5L per nautical mile at a cruising speed of 12 knots.
Once she is delivered, her owner plans to extensively cruise around the world, from the frigid polar regions to the warmer tropics on the equator. With the capabilities afforded by her submersible and other toys, Shinkai is primed to provide those onboard with the chance to explore the oceans in three dimensions, both at the surface and well beneath it, too.

Captain shoots down rumours over mega yacht anchored off Iqaluit
M/Y Shinkai passed through Nunavut’s capital over the weekend
I was in the Rankin airport when a private jet flew in and dropped off 4-5 people dressed as explorers with wealthy equipment and bags. He made a call or two and in about another hour another private jet landed and picked them up. I overheard the older man telling the captain of the jet they have been far North on a super yacht the size of a football field. Sounds like this may be the yacht in question.
Last year one of these was parked in Arctic bay and rumors were that it was Betsy DeVos and her billionaire family
THANK YOU ????
Seems not very strict country after all. Not very professional as they seem to be from forighers but no as strict.
I wonder if they were drinking Mega pints of wine on this mega yacht? Lol….
To drop into Nunavut waters a $3-million, 3 person sub called the “Most versatile scientific research submersible”, begs the question, what are they researching, looking for?
Who’s funding the research?
Who said that was happening?
Whew. I sure am glad it wasn’t a Russian Oligarch in our Harbour. Western European oligarchs are so much better.
It’s more about. If it was a Russian oligarch involved in the war effort, this boat would be a Canadian boat by now 🙂
Definitely not Russian as she just pulled in to Honolulu harbor this morning

About Shinkai
A striking mast and her own submarine were just two of the specific requests by an owner who has enormous experience of discovering the world by sea. Like every genuinely custom superyacht, the design for Shinkai revolved around how best to incorporate a 7.2-tonne submarine on the aft deck along with the giant crane required for launch and collection. Taking this as the starting point, Vitruvius and Feadship developed a 54.90-metre explorer yacht capable of remaining self-sufficient and fuel-efficient while travelling the world.

Shinkai, the 55m Vitruvius Yachts designed explorer, is nearing her delivery date at Feadship’s Aalsmeer shipyard, having just completed sea trials in the North Sea’s waters off The Netherlands.
As the creative force behind Shinkai’s powerful yet elegant design, Vitruvius Yachts’ Philippe Briand was onboard to experience her performance. Here, the designer and naval architect shares his thoughts on how she measured up to expectations during the critical sea trials assessment:
“The cold, grey November weather presenting itself to us on the day of Shinkai’s sea trials could not have been better to test her unique blend of rugged explorer meets comfortable superyacht. When you first step onboard, you are greeted by the ‘tech beauty’ of her striking red submersible and its accompanying immense ‘goldorak’ style crane; and then your attention is drawn to the glossy silver superyacht before you. A true rarity, she presents an inspiring combination of styles and capabilities.
“While traveling to the sea trials location in the North Sea, we heard hardly any noise from Shinkai’s engines, with only 37dB measured in the cabins. Then Roderick de Vries and Feadship’s team began the real testing process, pushing her hard: her rudder went to eight degrees and then 35 degrees at full speed, with the yacht leaning smoothly and heeling steadily before returning to an upright position surprisingly fast. The 20-tonne gyroscope was evidently working perfectly well.
“Shinkai’s full-height reinforced windows delivering an astonishing 270-degree view. Experiencing her excellent performance first hand, after four years of involvement in her creation from the very beginning, I confirmed to her owner by phone that she will be the perfect protective and comfortable cocoon from which to explore all the world’s oceans. And of course, Shinkai’s design efficiency and Feadship de Vries’ technology will help protect the planet’s oceans, too!”

New yacht launch – introducing shinkai.
Shinkai – the Japanese for ‘Deep Sea’
A new addition to the Vitruvius Fleet. Shinkai has all the hallmarks of a world- cruising vessel – with its own modern, rugged profile.
The steel-hulled, ice-class yacht, has been commissioned by a highly experienced owner, who has extensive plans for touring the globe. These include an audacious, high-latitude expedition north of Japan through the North-East Passage, which requires various specialist equipment for safe cruising through the ice.
The yacht is equipped with the largest gyroscope built to date, weighing 21 tonnes, as conventional stabiliser fins would be damaged by the passing pack ice.
To enjoy adventures without limits, the yacht is kitted out with a submarine for underwater exploration, a rough terrain vehicle for off-road touring and a bespoke limousine tender for comfortable and protected trips ashore, even in the most challenging of conditions.
This is a special project for us, as the yacht is the second yacht we have designed for the owner. He was the first yachtsman to adhere to the principles of the efficient hulls We are thrilled with the progress that has been made on Shinkai in recent months and are enjoying watching the final stages of her construction at Feadship. As the second Vitruvius yacht to be built at the prestigious yard, this is another meeting of great minds and great names that will no doubt result in a landmark yacht to inspire many more adventurous owners of the future.

Yacht with 1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks burns in Marina del Rey
- Copy Link URL Copied!
Marina del Rey’s harbor produced an unexpected light show Wednesday evening as a luxury yacht loaded with ammunition and fireworks burned for more than two hours before flames were extinguished, authorities said.
Flames leaped 20 to 30 feet from the 100-foot vessel, dubbed the Admiral, while live ammunition rounds could be heard firing from the boat, according to videos from the scene .
Thursday morning, the charred yacht was lying on its side, and the water around it was tinted red from the diesel fuel dumped from the vessel.
Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said two passengers aboard the boat exited without injuries. No information was available about the cause of the blaze.
Fire officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A deadly crash on a Long Beach sunset cruise. Then, the fight to save survivors
The boat, traveling at a high speed, crashed into the jetty near its slip, killing a man. It would have been much worse, if not for the quick thinking of a passenger.
Aug. 8, 2024
Firefighters responded to a call around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and eventually knocked out the flames at 10:33 p.m. The boat was declared fully submerged.
The yacht’s owner, who was not identified, told fire officials that the vessel was carrying 1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks.
U.S. Coast Guard personnel confirmed they were on the scene evaluating cleanup options. A Coast Guard spokesperson said an estimated 4,000 gallons of diesel was dumped into the water. The total is not official as monitoring continues.

Pearl Yachts delivers first 25m model with private owner's terrace
The first unit in Pearl Yachts ' 25.3-metre series, christened Pearly Spencer , has been delivered following her debut at this year's Cannes Yachting Festival . According to BOATPro , she is now anchored in Port de Portals Nous in Palma, Mallorca.
The Pearl 82 model sits between the shipyard's Pearl 95 and Pearl 72 offerings and features a raised pilothouse design with two aft deck configurations and a semi-walkaround deck with a forward master suite and private forepeak terrace.
The company claims this model is the only yacht in its class to offer this type of configuration, and Pearl Yachts managing director, Iain Smallridge, called the 82 "the most compact superyacht on the market".
The Pearl 82 builds on the collaboration between the shipyard and Bill Dixon whose studio, Dixon Yacht Design , created the exterior profile and naval architecture. Naturally, the model shares a sporty profile with the rest of the Pearl range with an exterior defined by four bands of dark glass.
Owners are offered the choice between two aft deck arrangements: the "Riviera" configuration with aft-facing sunpads behind the table and a sofa set up, and the "Veranda" layout with pivoting seating that can be used for dining or for observing activities at sea. Fold-down bulwarks at this level expand the aft cockpit, while a tender garage offers storage for a Williams 345 tender – or similar – and a Jet Ski.
All the outdoor areas can be protected by a foredeck Bimini, electric shades and the hard top on the flybridge, which can be set to full shade, adjustable louvres and full sun at the touch of a button. The owner's foredeck lounge is also connected to the flybridge deck and benefits from a full-sized dining table, a bar, a sunpad and a spa pool.
Kelly Hoppen, another long-time Pearl Yachts collaborator, is responsible for the interior which accommodates up to 10 guests with a forward master suite that has access to a private bow terrace through a glass door. The remaining guest accommodation is found on the lower deck, configured as two twins and two doubles.
"We've used beautiful materials, and the joinery and the detailing are absolutely intricate, but the feel of when you are on board is quite open plan, with these wonderfully enlarged windows, which make you feel that you are really out at sea, rather than being enclosed inside of a yacht," said Hoppen.
Other interior highlights include a main saloon with floor-to-ceiling windows which, together with cut-out bulwarks, allow an abundance of natural light to fill the space. Forward is dining for all 10 guests with galley access to port.
Engine room access, galley access and foredeck access are all positioned on the port side of the yacht, ensuring privacy for guests and crew.
"The design revealed in Düsseldorf set the stage for what will be a truly spectacular world premiere at Cannes next September," Smallridge said at the yacht's launch in July 2024 . "This yacht is a testament to our feature-focused philosophy and innovative spirit, and to our dedication to pushing the limits of yacht design and flawless quality."
The Pearl 82 offers owners a choice of three propulsion packages with twin MAN V12 engines ranging from 1,650hp to 2,000hp, with the most powerful engines delivering a top speed of 33 knots.
