Remembering Airstream’s fanciest trailer: the Land Yacht
The nautically-themed trailer is out of production, but its memory lives on in other Airstream models

Airstream trailers have been nicknamed a lot of things: the Silver Bullet, a Toaster-on-Wheels, and even the Silver Twinkie. But the now iconic American aluminum trailer—especially its largest models—has also been known as a “land yacht,” thanks to its high-end design reminiscent of the largest ships on the sea.
Airstream lived up to this title in 2014 when it debuted what it called “the most luxurious Airstream ever conceived.” The special edition model—the Land Yacht 28 —boasted three rooms and was designed with the help of Mauro Micheli, head designer at yacht design firm Officina Italiana Design , with cabinetry from the Italian firm Tecnoform.
All of that impressive pedigree meant one thing for the Land Yacht: It was fancy. Designed to resemble a luxury watercraft, the 28-foot trailer slept six and came with boat-deck plank flooring, LED lighting, and Corian countertops. The master bedroom boasted a pillow top queen mattress, a 30-inch flatscreen, and plenty of under-the-bed storage.

The technology and decor was also first class. A powered pedestal table moved the dining room table out of the way to free up space, and a powered outdoor awning made shade accessible. The interior came in two color options, dark wood and cream or a lighter wood with dark grey seating fabric.
The Land Yacht started at $146,362 and because it was a special edition model, it had limited production.
“It doesn’t come down to how many Special Edition units we sell, it’s about creating truly unique models that allow our team, and those we partner with a creative outlet to try new ideas,” said Bryan Melton, General Manager of travel trailers at Airstream.
“When you remove certain constraints, you allow engineers and designers to maximize their creativity. The results are truly special, like the Land Yacht, which continue to make strong statements within Airstream’s prolific history.”

Not long after the debut of the Land Yacht, Airstream took many of that model’s favorite qualities and added them to the remodeled Classic trailer and their new line of Class-B luxury touring coaches . Today, the Land Yacht is still on the product page of Airstream’s website , but according to a reputable Airstream dealer in Colorado, the only Land Yachts still left for sale are in Canada.

Vintage Airstream Design Plans

Several years ago while surfing the internet I stumbled up the Happy Janssen’s . At the time they were a nomadic family living in a large diesel motorhome that was powered by veggie oil. I was captivated by their freedom, their simple existence and their commitment to lead an intentional life for Christ. To top it all off the Janssen’s motorhome was stunning! Its was bright, organized and comfortable for their growing family of four.
The following months we followed their journey traveling the country and we dreamed of someday making a similar journey. Meanwhile we continued to work on our debt snowball and I (Nick) began to work on a tiny teardrop trailer that would allow us to start our own adventure on a smaller scale during the summers.
In this general time frame we ran across an interview with a young architect that had remodeled a vintage Airstream to live in full-time. Matthew Hoffman transformed his 70’s Airstream into a masterpiece . Clean open layout that maximized the existing space and utilized every inch of his 25’ Airstream Tradewind. After seeing Matthews Trailer I was instantly inspired by what could be accomplished with a vintage trailer. (and I knew Our family needed one)
So to fast-forward a bit we eventually bought a 1966 Airstream 26’ Overlander . After seeing what could be accomplished with a little creativity and sweat from the Janssens and Matthew’s Airstream inspiration we have lofty plans for our little house on wheels!
I love the challenge of small spaces. I love thinking outside the box and finding solutions. I love that everything has to be multifunctional, intentional and minimal. I love that we have to do more with less.
Here is what we plan to do with our Vintage Airstream the Land Yacht…
Airstream Design Plan
We want a simple open layout with a modern organic feel. We want space to cook ( we love to cook! ), entertain and work. The existing layout of the Overlander’s was a rear bath, with a bedroom separated by an accordion door and a couch/double pull-out bed, small kitchen area and front couch with a fold out table. The setup wasn’t bad but it was a bit compartmentalized and needed to be opened up. Plus the fold out table was a pain to use and we wanted a more permanent table for dining and work.

Description: This is a 1969 Airstream! These trailers are highly sought after and can sell for $20,000+ when refurbished! This trailer has been gutted and is ready to be brought back to life. All of the original interior is in storage and is included in sale. Featured-kitchen with lots of storage, oven, 2 burner cook top, fridge, full bathroom with tub/shower and original pull out sleeper sofas that can be recovered-sleeps 4, but can reconfigure to sleep more! Some frame welding is needed in the back of trailer-from some past water damage, which is very common on these. Sub floor is in fair condition, but we were planning on replacing. Have pictures for for reinstallation of any original interior you wish to replace. Exterior is in great condition for age w and is ready to be buffed to a high, blinding shine! Tires are in good condition and trailer can be towed. We purchased this as a project and were so excited to have it. Unfortunately, circumstance have changed and due to a deployment it will need to go. We are asking $5200 and will entertain any reasonable offers. Do not call with trades or scams! We will not paypal money, nor accept any payment other than cash. Will add more pics upon request
