The 'Bayesian' Yacht Owner Is Missing After a Tornado Sank the Luxury Vessel

Mike has been referred to as "Britain’s version of Bill Gates."

The 184-foot luxury yacht called The Bayesian sank off the coast of Palermo, Italy on Monday, Aug. 19, 2024. Per CNN , six passengers are still missing at the time of writing — the original manifest included 22 people on board.

It's being reported that 15 people were rescued, and one passenger died. One of the missing is Mike Lynch, a tech entrepreneur whose wife's firm, Revcom, technically owns the superyacht. Mike has a very interesting past, which involves one of the biggest fraud cases in Silicon Valley history.

Read on for details.

So, who is Mike Lynch, the 'Bayesian' yacht owner who is missing?

According to The Washington Post , Mike is not accounted for after The Bayesian sank near Sicily in what's being called a "freak storm." Reportedly, the yacht's mast broke due to high winds, and the huge vessel sank.

The unthinkable accident resulted in Mike's 18-year-old daughter Hannah also being missing.

His wife, Angela Bacares, was reportedly rescued.

Per the outlet, Mike has been referred to as "Britain’s version of Bill Gates ." His company, Autonomy, sold to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion over a decade ago.

But as AP News reports, that mega-deal soured when Mike was accused of falsifying documents leading up to the sale of Autonomy. A multi-year court case ensued, with Mike eventually being cleared of charges in the United States. Still, per the outlet, he was not done dealing with a civil case in his native Britain at the time of the yacht accident.

This is totally normal. Just a major business figure, Mike Lynch, and his co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain dying within a few hours of each other. A sailing accident and a hit and run. Nothing to see here. pic.twitter.com/0HGIymfsxE — Jamie Bambrick (@j_bambrick) August 20, 2024

Mike Lynch's co-defendant was killed the same week the 'Bayesian' sank.

In a turn of events worthy of a movie, Mike's co-defendant in the case against him died on Saturday, just a few days before The Bayesian plummeted to 160 feet below the surface of the sea.

Stephen Chamberlain, who was killed by a car while jogging in England, was the former vice-president of finance for Autonomy, per The Guardian . He was initially placed on life support but later died.

And the lawyer who represented them is missing. I am not in the habit of seeking conspiracies but this is very suspect — kim ratcliffe (@KimRatcliffe37) August 20, 2024

Given the incredibly coincidental nature of the two awful tragedies, of course, conspiracy theories are cropping up on social media.

Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that Christopher Morvillo, the lawyer who helped clear the men of charges in the U.S., is among those missing after The Bayesian sank, per the New York Post .

Two months before going missing, Christopher oddly posted to LinkedIn for the first time .

"Following the jury's swift exoneration of our client, Mike Lynch, and his colleague, Steven Chamberlain, last week in San Francisco, I finally have something to say that I would like others to hear," he wrote in part.

After thanking many people who helped win the case, he finished the post by writing, "A huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…."

Special forces divers and robots search Mike Lynch’s sunken Bayesian yacht for clues

Specialist military divers are currently searching the sunken Bayesian yacht for clues as to why it sunk in a freak storm off the coast of Siciliy, killing seven passengers.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch’s boat had been moored near the port of Porticello on 19 August when it sank during the early hours of the morning, and is now lying 50 metres below the surface of the water.

About six divers from the Italian navy ’s Comsubin unit are investigating the superyacht for electronic equipment, which includes data storage and CCTV and to see if doors were left open during the storm.

A source close to the investigation told The Times : “The investigating magistrate has asked Comsubin to investigate so he can check statements made by the crew of the yacht.”

Three crew members including the yacht’s captain are under investigation, with plans being discussed to raise the yacht from the ocean bed to assist enquiries.

Sources close to New Zealander James Cutfield, 51, the captain , told the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera that is living through the darkest days of his life.

Among those killed were Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who had been due to begin studying at Oxford University in September, as well as four other family friends and associates.

Jonathan Bloomer, the international chairman of Morgan Stanley Bank; his wife Judith, a psychotherapist; Christopher Morvillo, a US lawyer; and his wife Neda, a jewellery designer also died in the sinking.

Also killed was the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, whose body was recovered floating near the wreckage.

According to the authorities, efforts to raise the yacht will be made by the vessel’s owner, UK company Revton, which is controlled by Mr Lynch’s widow Angela Bacares.

They have reportedly employed the Genoa-based diving company Drafinsub to use sonar and a submersble robot to examine the yacht to discover the best plan to raise it.

It is likely to take two to three days to complete, with 18,000 litres of fuel having to be syphoned from the yacht’s tanks in order to avoid any spillage.

Navigating Maritime Liability - The Italian Authorities Investigate The Sinking Of The Bayesian

Contributor.

Giambrone & Partners weblink

The tragic sinking of the yacht, the Bayesian, owned by Mike Lynch, in Italian waters just off Palermo. The successful rescue of 15 passengers and crew which was achieved by the swift attendance of the Italian rescue teams. The question now arises as to whether there were any breaches in maritime law regarding the question of the safety of the vessel. The sinking of the Bayesian represents a complex maritime disaster, raising significant questions of liability, negligence, and regulatory compliance.

The sinking will be investigated to determine the cause and look into the question of liability. The yacht had been sailing close to the Sicilian coast with a party of guests who had key roles in lengthy fraud trial in connection with the sale of Autonomy to Hewlett Packard, resulting in Mike Lynch and other defendants being found not guilty. There will be questions for the crew involved in the celebratory cruise.

Giorgio Bianco , a partner, commented "a privately owned yacht is subject to the same maritime law and safety rules applicable to chartered vessels and commercial vessels. The Italian authorities will begin an investigation to review the measures taken to protect the passengers and crew members in light of the weather conditions." Giorgio further mentioned "The Italian Authorities are investigating all aspects of the incident and will scrutinise everything including the construction of the yacht and the steps taken by the crew to address the risk of the storm".

Giambrone & Partners' commercial lawyers point out that the whilst the International Maritime Organisation, (IMO) an agency developed by the United Nations, has a strong focus on commercial shipping it also addresses privately owned vessels and regularly updates the conventions across maritime issues covering safe navigation. The signatory countries are expected to ensure that vessels that sail under their flag conform to the safety rules and carry out statutory obligations, such as assessing the strength and the integrity of the hull, that the design of the steering systems, propulsion and generators are satisfactory and can maintain the essential services.

The investigation into the causes of the sinking and where the liability may lay is being carried out by the Italian Authorities Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) , as the yacht is in Italian waters. An expert from the Department of Economic Sciences at the University of Palermo, commented "In maritime accidents, there is almost always a human error at the root of it...the crew of a ship of that size must be prepared for anything..."

The Bayesian was sailing under a British flag and therefore will be subject to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) safety rules and four British inspectors are now in Sicily and will also make an assessment of the events leading to the sinking. The Italian inquiry is assuming that the tornadic water spout was the initial cause of the sinking. Questions will be asked as to whether the captain and crew had adequate knowledge of fact that a storm was approaching that was generating the phenomena had the potential to strike in this manner and therefore took the appropriate steps to maintain the safety of the vessel and passengers.

Other comments have questioned the design of the yacht, suggesting that the tall mast played a part in causing the yacht to list. The has been refuted by Giovanni Constantino, the CEO of the Italian See Group the company which makes the yachts stating the super yachts are unsinkable and the Bayesian had no flaws in its design. Also stating "... the vessels are the safest in the most absolute sense..." A number of theories have been suggested but until the Italian authorities have completed their investigations such speculation holds no weight.

Giambrone & Partners' commercial lawyers stated that when, as with the Bayesian sinking, there has been trauma, injuries and deaths as a result of an accident at sea, maritime law does, in some circumstances, there is a clause whereby the owner of the vessel can limit their liability in the event of negligence on the part of the captain and crew. However, such clauses do not apply where injury or death has actually occurred. Legal action on the part of the survivors following the conclusion of the inquiry depends on the deductions that are made by all parties looking into the tragic event. Giambrone & Partners has a thorough understanding of the legal challenges that arise from such maritime tragedies and the potential outcomes in court.

Divers discover cameras on Mike Lynch’s doomed superyacht that may solve mystery behind sinking

V ideo surveillance cameras retrieved from the wreckage of tech tycoon Mike Lynch’s yacht may solve the mystery of why it sank in a storm off Sicily last month.

Divers from the Italian Navy retrieved video surveillance equipment, including computers and hard drives, that will be analyzed in specialized labs, according to a report Saturday.

Lynch, his daughter Hannah, 18, and five other people died when the Bayesian went down in severe weather, believed to be a meteorological phenomenon called a downburst, which is similar to a small tornado.

Prosecutors investigating the sinking deployed six elite divers from a special forces unit called Comsubin, who made repeated dives down to the sunken yacht with the help of a hyperbaric chamber.

Recaldo Thomas, the ship’s Antiguan-Canadian chef, Jonathan Bloomer, the Morgan Stanley International bank chairman, his wife Judy, and Chris Morvillo, a Clifford Chance lawyer, and his wife Neda, were the other victims of the Aug. 19 tragedy.

Fifteen people, including Angela Bacares, Lynch’s wife, survived when they were rescued by a nearby yacht.

James Cutfield, 51, the New Zealand captain of the Bayesian, has not been charged with any crimes but is under investigation for multiple counts of manslaughter and causing a deadly shipwreck, along with two British crew members: Tim Parker Eaton, 56, and Matthew Griffiths, 22.

Under the Italian legal system, being placed under investigation does not imply guilt and does not necessarily mean that charges will be brought.

Officials plan to raise the Bayesian and bring it to land in order to fully investigate how it went down in just 16 minutes after being hit by the storm.

It is currently lying at a depth of 165 feet, about half a mile off the coast of Porticello.

The theories on what caused Bayesian superyacht to sink so quickly

Yahoo news uk rounds up the theories on what could have caused the bayesian to sink off the coast of sicily..

Specialist divers combing the wreckage of billionaire Mike Lynch’s Bayesian superyacht have found video surveillance equipment that could explain how it sank.

Italian navy divers have reportedly found equipment including computer material, video surveillance systems and hard drives from the luxury British yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on 19 August.

The video equipment could show if the crews left doors open on the 56-metre vessel, which might have allowed it to flood, it has been suggested.

Technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah died in the tragedy, along with Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo, and Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas , who was working as a chef on the Bayesian.

An investigation is underway into how the boat could seemingly sink within a matter of minutes during an intense storm while boats around it remained afloat.

Authorities have said the most likely cause was a "downburst", a strong downward wind, rather than a water spout - which involves rotating winds like a whirlwind or tornado - as initially suggested.

The disaster, off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, has baffled naval marine experts who said such a vessel, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini and presumed to have top-class fittings and safety features, should have been able to withstand such weather.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which manufactures Perini boats, said such yachts were "unsinkable bodies" and "the safest in the most absolute sense". He told Sky News: "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

Here are some of theories discussed so far looking at what could have happened.

“From the information we have, it is a downburst we are talking about," prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano told a news conference.

Downbursts are powerful winds that descend from a thunderstorm and spread out quickly after hitting the ground.

Authorities said one thing they will be looking at is how it could affect one vessel and not others that were nearby at the time.

Cammarano said the passengers were all probably asleep at the time, which was why they failed to escape.

Key to working out exactly what happened will be recovering the wreck, which is lying apparently intact on its side at a depth of 50 metres (164 feet). However, this is likely to prove complex and costly.

Hatch or windows were left open

There has been some speculation in media reports that the yacht sank because of a large hatch or windows being left open. Structural engineer Filippo Mattioni pointed to the possibility of "an open hatch" letting in water.

It is hoped that video equipment recovered from the yacht could show whether this was the case.

Before the downburst explanation was put forward, experts suggested the hatches could have broken or smashed during a waterspout, or were left open due to the hot weather, which could have allowed the Bayesian to fill with water quickly and sink. Andrea Ratti, a nautical design professor at Milan Polytechnic university, said a boat the size of the Bayesian could only sink so rapidly by taking in a huge amount of water.

He said that “one can make plausible assumptions that leave room for doubt” about what happened, suggesting that one or more portholes, windows or other openings may have been broken or smashed open by a waterspout, letting in water.

Divers who carried out underwater inspections of the boat reported that the hatch was open, according to La Repubblica, though this has not been confirmed by officials.

However, an industry expert dismissed the open hatch theory, telling Reuters that it should have taken hours for the Bayesian to fill up with enough water to sink it.

Fire department diver Marco Tilotta also told Il Messaggero daily the wreck was “apparently intact”, with “no gashes, no signs of impact”. However, only one half of the hull is visible to divers.

Was the retractable keel used?

The Bayesian was built with a retractable keel - a structure that lies under the hull that helps stabilise boats and acts as a counterweight to the mast. Both Ratti and Mattioni suggested that if the yacht had been anchored with the keel up, it would have reduced its depth under water from around 10m to 4m – making the vessel less stable.

Ratti said the boat might have started oscillating wildly, “like a pendulum” in strong winds, putting exceptional strain on the mast and potentially leading to it breaking.

However, he conceded that “this by itself is not enough to justify the sinking”. Investigators have so far not said whether the retractable keel had been used.

Palermo's Coast Guard Chief, Raffaele Macauda, said there was no specific ban for the ship to be anchored where it was struck by the storm, adding that weather bulletins at the time were not reporting a major storm alert for the area.

The yacht’s mammoth mast

Perini Navi, the Italian luxury yacht maker who built the Bayesian, said the vessel featured the world's tallest aluminium mast, measuring 72m.

American entrepreneur Scott Painter – who took over Mike Lynch's Autonomy brand – told MailOnline he believed the Bayesian may have been more vulnerable to capsizing in bad weather because of the height of its mast.

He said: “That could certainly contribute to a capsize as it would destabilise the yacht. And if it were to lean over too far, it could absolutely capsize the yacht.”

Sam Jefferson, editor of Sailing Today, told The Telegraph: “She has a very tall, aluminium mast – I believe it is the second tallest aluminium mast in the world – and that would not have helped. Stability was obviously the problem in the extremely strong winds she was experiencing and I’d assume the boat was pinned on its side and could not right before it filled up with water.”

Watch: What could have happened to the Bayesian yacht?

Karsten Borner, captain of another yacht anchored nearby at the time, claims he saw the Bayesian’s mast “bend and then snap”. However, Ratt said an unusually tall mast is not by itself an element of vulnerability in a storm.

Initial reports suggested the mast had snapped, however a source told Corriere della Sera that divers found the mast in one piece.

Fire department diver Marco Tilotta said the wreck was intact and the mast still attached. He added that divers had not been able to inspect the full length of the mast but the section they had seen was undamaged.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told the BBC it was difficult to say whether the mast broke, saying it was “pure guesswork”. He pointed out that divers have said the vessel is “basically intact” and if the mast was broken, “that would be a significant thing that would be reported”.

Freak waterspout was caused by 'higher than usual temperatures'

Italian authorities have reported stormy conditions that caused the yacht to sink. It was initially believed the Bayesian may have been hit by a waterspout – a rotating column of wind that forms over a body of water and is often likened to a tornado.

According to the US National Ocean Service, tornadic weather spouts have the “same characteristics” as a land tornado and are often accompanied by severe thunderstorms, “high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning”.

But speaking at a news conference on Saturday, authorities said a "downburst" was more likely to be the cause (see more above).

Some climate experts have said the storm could have been caused by global warming. Luca Mercalli, president of Italy's meteorological society, said the sea surface temperature around Sicily in the days leading up to Bayesian’s sinking was about 30C – almost 3C more than normal. He told Reuters: “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

Borner, the captain of the boat moored nearby, also blamed more frequent episodes of intense heat during the summer months for playing a role in causing such storms.

Professor Yoav Yair, Dean of the School of Sustainability at Reichman University in Israel, told the Mirror that storms dubbed 'medicanes' - Mediterranean hurricanes - could cause similar tragedies to that which befell the Bayesian.

He said: "It is not a matter of if this (the Bayesian disaster) will happen again, but rather it's when and where.

"In the last couple of years we have seen medicanes - which are a new phenomena. These are hurricane-like storms that pack a lot of energy, and create flash flooding, torrential rains, lightning, hail and severe sustained winds. The 2023 "Daniel" medicane destroyed Libya and caused over 30,000 deaths there. The sea surface temperature has risen globally and in the Med as well, charging the atmosphere with increased fluxes of water vapor, which means a higher potential for massive storms."

‘A series of human errors’

The Bayesian was built in 2008 by Italian luxury yacht maker Perini Navi and was refitted twice – but reportedly not by Perini himself.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group TISGR.MI, which owns Perini, said the yacht was “one of the safest boats in the world” and basically unsinkable. He suggested that the sinking was down to a series of human errors – despite the storm being expected.

Speaking to Italian media, the CEO said that had the crew shut all doors and hatches, turned on the engine, lifted the anchor, lowered the keel and turned the yacht to face the wind, they would have suffered “zero damage”. He added that data showed it took 16 minutes from when the wind began buffeting the yacht, and it began taking on water, for it to sink.

Cartoisio said the tragedy will be even more painful if the investigation shows it was caused by "behaviours that were not aligned to the responsibilities that everyone needs to take in shipping".

He said that while the yacht had been hit by a sudden meteorological event, it was "plausible" that crimes of multiple manslaughter and causing a shipwreck through negligence had been committed.

But he added that the investigation so far is not focusing on any one individual.

Captain James Cutfield has been questioned, along with the other survivors. None of them have commented publicly on the sinking.

It has not been possible to carry out alcohol or drug tests on the survivors as they were in a state of shock and needed treatment for their injuries, officials said.

There is no legal obligation for any of the survivors to stay in Italy, but they are expected to cooperate with the investigation.

Will we ever know what happened to the Bayesian?

Experts are struggling to identify any single one cause, and are hesitant to make any conclusions, especially as the yacht was presumed to have top-class fittings and safety features. Another yacht anchored next to it remained afloat during the weather event.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, described the sinking as a potential “black swan event” – something that is unpredictable and is beyond what is normally expected from a situation and that has potentially severe consequences.

Nevertheless, he said he was confident the authorities would “get to the bottom” of what caused the vessel to sink, thanks to the accounts of survivors, witnesses and examination of the ship, which appears to have remained intact on the sea bed.

Who will lead the investigation?

Leading experts have already lent their knowledge of what could have caused the sinking of the Bayesian.

The official investigation into the disaster is being led by prosecutors in the nearby town of Termini Imerese.

Ambrogio Cartosio, the chief prosecutor of Termini Imerese, will be heading up the investigation alongside the assistant prosecutors.

The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch is also assisting with inquiries. Their investigation is likely to take months to complete.

With the Bayesian lying on her side 50 metres underneath the now gentle waters of the Mediterranean, mystery still surrounds how the 56-metre superyacht, sank in the typhoon off the port of Porticello.

Remotely controlled underwater vehicles and cave divers are looking to raise the yacht , which experts will examine in the coming days.

Italian publication Giornale di Sicilia reported post-mortem examinations were completed at a Palermo hospital and the bodies have now been returned.

The Bayesian was hit by a suspected “downburst” of strong wind early on 19 August. The 56m-long, £30 million yacht drifted for about 400 metres from its anchorage near the fishing port of Porticello before sinking.

Fifteen of the 22 passengers and crew survived the incident by clambering onto an inflatable liferaft.

The bodies of tech billionaire Mike Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates“, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah and four other people were found by divers on board. Post-mortem examinations suggest they had been trapped in a room below deck.

Jonathan Bloomer, the international chairman of Morgan Stanley Bank; his wife Judith, a psychotherapist; Christopher Morvillo, a US lawyer; and his wife Neda, a jewellery designer, also died in the sinking.

Mike Lynch is among those confirmed as dead

It will take weeks for Ambrogio Cartosio, the chief prosecutor of Termini Imerese, and his team to establish whether the sinking of the Bayesian was down to human error, an unpredictable weather event or whether anyone is liable.

Italian Navy divers have recovered video surveillance equipment from the wreckage parts of the deck, computer material, video surveillance systems, hard drives and various other equipment, that could explain how the Bayesian sank.

Prosecutors have said they will interview the survivors – some of whom were pictured leaving the Domina Zagarella hotel in Santa Flavia, which has become the headquarters for survivors, police and rescuers.

Many questions face the investigators:

Mike Lynch yacht latest: Fifth body found inside Bayesian boat sunken off coast of Sicily

Were access hatches left open?

One expert at the scene in Sicily said an early focus of the investigation would be on whether the yacht’s crew had failed to close access hatches before the tornado struck.

Yachting experts have suggested that the hatches being open could have allowed the Bayesian to fill with water quickly and sink.

But Andrea Ratti, a nautical design professor at Polytechnic University of Milan, said a boat the size of the Bayesian could only sink so rapidly by taking in a huge amount of water.

“One can make plausible assumptions that leave room for doubt,” he said, before suggesting that one or more portholes, windows or other openings may have been broken or smashed open by the waterspout.

The recovered video could show whether the crews left doors open, which might have allowed the yacht to flood.

Was the boat prepared for a storm?

Prosecutors will look at whether appropriate measures were taken in preparation for the storm.

The luxury superyacht called ‘The Bayesian’ off Porticello, Palermo

The yacht’s captain, James Catfield, from New Zealand, told Italian media of the suddenness of the waterspout that turned a luxury super yacht into a death trap.

“We just didn’t see it coming,” he said.

Luca Mercalli, the president of the Italian Meteorological Society, said on Tuesday that the crew should have made sure that all the guests were awake and given them lifejackets in light of the forecasted heavy rains.

The coast guard said bad weather had been forecast, but added that it was more virulent than expected. Some locals spoke of a waterspout, or sea whirlwind, of exceptional force.

“It was a strange thing,” fisherman Andrea Carini said. The Bayesian was at anchor, its sails down, when the tempest hit, with another yacht moored nearby.

A nearby yacht, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell, remained anchored and weathered the storm after its captain turned on the engine to keep control of the vessel and avoid a collision with the Bayesian.

Moment Bayesian yacht is engulfed by storm

The captain, Karsten Borner, said he did not know whether the crew of the Bayesian had managed to switch on its engines.

“I don’t think they did things wrong, I think they were surprised by the power of the storm,” he said.

“I only know that they went flat with the mast on the water and that they sank in two minutes,” he said, adding that the storm was “very violent, very intense”, bringing in “a lot of water and I think a turning system like a tornado”.

Did the world’s largest aluminium mast have anything to do with the sinking?

The Bayesian has one of the largest masts in the world

The Bayesian was built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008 with a 75m (246ft) mast which it claims is the tallest aluminium mast in the world.

Scott Painter, who took over Lynch’s multi-billion dollar software company called Autonomy, founded in 1996, said Lynch’s yacht may have been more vulnerable due to the mast.

“The mast was the ultimate sailor’s bragging right,” Painter told the outlet. “That mast must’ve been over 240 feet tall, which is either the tallest or second tallest in the world.”

He added: “That could certainly contribute to a capsize as it would destabilize the yacht. And if it were to lean over too far, it could absolutely capsize the yacht.”

Captain Borner said: “If the mast had been broken they wouldn’t have capsized.”

Would a lightning shock wave damage the mast?

Colonel Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said the agency had registered intense lightning activity and strong gusts of wind in the area.

The Bayesian had one of the tallest aluminium masts in the world, according to its builder, Perini Navi.

“Having a tall aluminium mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology told the Politecnico di Milano.

The type of intensity unleashed by a violent lightning storm “could have created a significant shock wave”, he added.

Was the Bayesian keel retractable and was it down?

The Bayesian had a retractable keel, a fin-like apparatus under the hull that helps stabilise boats and acts as a counterweight to the mast. It is not known whether it was down at the time of the vicious storm.

Both Ratti and Mattioni questioned whether the yacht had been anchored with the keel up, reducing the vessel’s depth under water and making it less stable. Ratti said strong winds might have caused the boat to start oscillating wildly, “like a pendulum”, putting exceptional strain on the mast.

Divers have only ten minutes to investigate boat

Was the the Bayesian properly anchored?

Tom Sharpe, a retired Royal Navy commander and defence commentator, told CBC News that a mast the size of the Bayesian’s is designed for a massive sail, and without that sail raised and catching the wind, the gusts likely would’ve had a negligible impact on the aluminum pole.

He instead suggested the anchor may have played a pivotal role.

“My kind of working assumption is that she was probably a bit further in at anchor, and it’s very likely, in these sort of conditions, that her anchor dragged,” he said.

He added the 10-strong crew was better off steering toward the anchor to stabilise the yacht or even raising the anchor and steering into the open Meditteranean to ride out the storm.

“They might have got caught in that middle ground where they’re not on a particularly good anchorage but the anchor is now controlling the bow of the ship”, he posted.

Prosecutors have said their investigation will take time, and will require the wreck to be pulled up from the sea bed.

Divers make major finding that could solve mystery behind sinking of yacht that killed British billionaire Mike Lynch

Divers make major finding that could solve mystery behind sinking of yacht that killed British billionaire Mike Lynch

The 19 august bayesian yacht sinking saw seven people out of 22 on board die, including british businessman mike lynch.

Britt Jones

Divers travelling to the wreck of the Bayesian yacht have retrieved a vital component which could possibly help explain why it sank, it has been reported.

Seven of the 22 passengers and crew on board the gigantic 56-metre luxury yacht died after the ship sank at around 5.00am local time on 19 August.

According to reports, this was after the boat encountered a tornado approximately half-a-mile off the coast of Porticello.

British businessman , Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda Morvillo and chef Recaldo Thomas were all confirmed to have died in the sinking.

Lynch, who was known as the 'British Bill Gates' after founding software company Autonomy in 1996, was reported to have been celebrating after being cleared of conducting fraud on an £8.64 billion sale to US firm Hewlett Packard.

As of now, three crew members, which include the ship’s captain James Cutfield, are all currently under investigation by Italian authorities for manslaughter.

In a press conference, prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said that his office had opened the investigation as 'behaviours that were not perfectly in order' could have been the reason why seven people died, but added that all possible lines of inquiry were being considered.

Under Italian law, being under investigation also doesn't imply any guilt or that further charges will be issued - and there may be more people under investigation.

Since then, divers from the Italian Navy have been visiting the wreck on behalf of the prosecutor's office, with a source telling Reuters that they have discovered video surveillance cameras fixed to the wreckage which could possibly help explain the reason for the sinking.

According to a report on Friday (13 August), a team of divers from the Italian Navy retrieved parts of the deck along with video surveillance equipment, which includes hard drives and computers.

This evidence will now be analysed in specialised labs outside of Sicily to recover any potential data, the source further claimed.

The divers made several 40 minute dives down to the yacht via a hyperbaric chamber, Coast Guard official, Daniele Governale, said, Reuters reports.

The Coast Guard has also taken underwater images with a remotely operated vehicle to sketch up a plan to raise the wreck, the outlet also says.

CCTV footage from the night of the sinking showed a clip of the yacht before it 'vanished in 60 seconds'.

And passenger Matthew Griffiths also spoke about what happened the day the ship went down.

According to Italian news agency Ansa, he said: "I woke up the captain when the wind was at 23 mph. He gave orders to wake everyone else.

"The ship tilted and we were thrown into the water. Then we managed to get back up and tried to rescue those we could.

"We were walking on the walls [of the boat]. We saved who we could, Cutfield also saved the little girl and her mother.”

The little girl in question were the surviving passengers, Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter.

LADbible reached out to the Palermo Coast Guard and the Italian Prosecutor’s Office for comment.

Divers probing how Bayesian superyacht sank make breakthrough discovery as they retrieve surveillance cameras

  • Annabel Bate , Foreign News Reporter

DIVERS have recovered video surveillance equipment from Mike Lynch's Basyesian superyacht that could reveal key details of its sinking.

The entrepreneur and dad-of-two, dubbed "Britain's Bill Gates ", died alongside his teenage daughter when his superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily on August 19.

Billionaire Mike Lynch with his daughter Hannah - both died onboard the yacht

Prosecutors investigating the sinking deployed six elite divers from special forces unit "Comsubin" who have made repeated dives down to the sunken vessel.

Divers from the Italian Navy were able to retrieve the surveillance equipment including computers and hard drives.

Now they are to be analysed in specialised labs, according to a report.

The devices will be examined to see if any data can be revealed, or potentially a video showing how the yacht sank - including whether any doors were left open.

The investigation does not imply guilt or mean formal charges will be brought against any of the men.

At a press conference at the Termini Imerese Courthouse on Saturday, Chief Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said there may have been “behaviours that were not perfectly in order with regard to the responsibility everybody had.”

His team will probe if hatches were left open, allowing water to flood in.

They will also look into whether the crew raised the alarm before escaping.

He vowed to “discover how much they knew and to what extent all the people (passengers) were warned.”

Mr Cartosio added: “There could be in fact the question of homicide. But this is the beginning of the inquiry, we cannot exclude anything at all…We will establish each element’s (crew) responsibility.

"For me, it is probable that offences were committed — that it could be a case of manslaughter.”

The body of Mike Lynch and his four guests, Chris, Neda, Jonathan and Judy were found in the first cabin on the left.

Divers recovered five of the six missing passengers - including Lynch - in one cabin on the left side of the yacht which settled on its right side on the sea floor.

A judicial investigation into the yacht tragedy is ongoing.

The  luxury  vessel was caught up in a horror storm which caused it to sink in the early hours of the morning.

Of the 22 onboard, 15 survived with 11 including Mike Lynch's wife rescued on an inflatable life raft.

Inside The Bayesian's final 16 minutes

By Ellie Doughty, Foreign News Reporter

Data recovered from the Bayesian's Automatic Identification System (AIS) breaks down  exactly how it sank  in a painful minute-by-minute timeline.

At 3.50am on Monday August 19 the Bayesian began to shake "dangerously" during a fierce storm, Italian outlet  Corriere  revealed.

Just minutes later at 3.59am the boat's anchor gave way, with a source saying the data showed there was "no anchor left to hold".

After the ferocious weather ripped away the boat's mooring it was dragged some 358 metres through the water.

By 4am it had began to take on water and was plunged into a blackout, indicating that the waves had reached its generator or even engine room.

At 4.05am the  Bayesian fully disappeared  underneath the waves.

An emergency GPS signal was finally emitted at 4.06am to the coastguard station in Bari, a city nearby, alerting them that the vessel had sunk.

Early reports suggested the disaster struck around 5am local time off the coast of Porticello Harbour in Palermo, Sicily.

The new data pulled from the boat's AIS appears to suggest it happened an hour earlier at around 4am.

Some 15 of the 22 onboard were rescued, 11 of them scrambling onto an inflatable life raft that sprung up on the deck.

A smaller nearby boat - named Sir Robert Baden Powell - then helped take those people to shore.
