When encountering an old, green, and dirty boat, the immediate impulse might be to break the boat up, and scrap her. Fortunately for our wallet and the planet, in many cases the dirt is all but superficial. 

What is Re-Homing? Re-Homing is a service designed to find a new enthusiast who will take on an old boat for free and restore it. This is not just another marketplace listing; we proactively search for a suitable new owner. Our process involves sifting through potential candidates to ensure they are responsible and ready to act now, thus saving you from the hassle of dealing with viewings, negotiations, delays and more delays.

Which Boats Are Suitable for Re-Homing? Boats suitable for Re-Homing include:

• Boats from stalled DIY projects due to changing circumstances.
• Boats inherited by those who aren’t boating enthusiasts themselvees.
• Boats that can no longer be maintained due to health or job constraints.

Often, selling these boats can be less than ideal—you might only net a small sum after months of dealing with time-wasters on social media and over the phone.

Our Solution   We offer a seamless Re-Homing process. Through our extensive marketing network, which includes a large following of enthusiastic boaters, we find a new owner who is eager to take on a new project. This approach allows you to dispose of an unfinished project or an old boat with minimal cost. The new owner takes the boat for free but covers all related expenses, such as lifting and transport.

Yacht Sharing Guide: Best Ownership Options & Schemes

The thought of signing up for a yacht sharing may seem totally out of your comfort zone but you could be surprised about the options and schemes available writes Sue Pelling .

Look at any marina and you’ll notice that a huge percentage of privately owned cruising yachts hardly ever go anywhere. They just sit in the marina year after year at great expense, and often deteriorate. Eventually these precious assets get sold off at great financial loss, and often the process repeats itself again and again under new ownerships.

So, what’s the answer? Unless you know you’ll be using your yacht on a regular basis, and/or will be using the boat for racing, it really does pay to ‘do the sums’ and work out whether you should consider the growing trend of boat share ownership. 

This sad trend in boat ownership over the last decade or so has prompted a growing move towards loaning or sharing in the marine sector with a steady flow of companies launching fractional/shared ownership, and gym-style club membership schemes.

It’s a bit like the car industry that has seen a huge shift in customers choosing to lease rather than buy. With plenty of good deals ‘out there’ and the chance of being able to drive a top-of-the-range car that would otherwise be out of the range in financial terms in many cases, it is a serious temptation.

It’s the same with yacht shared ownership/lease schemes, with many companies offering a choice of top of the range, fully maintained yachts. Those who choose charter, particularly in gym-style club membership schemes, have the advantage of sailing a range of top-spec yachts, without the outlay of purchasing or having to deal with time-consuming repairs and maintenance. Just step aboard, sail, and hand back when you’ve finished. 

Schemes available

Charter company shared ownership.

Some yacht charter companies such as Nautilus Yachting , Sunsail , The Moorings , Dream Yacht Worldwide , Sail Ionian , and Navigare Yachting have expanded into charter purchase schemes, which can be a cost-effective option particularly if you are a regular charter holiday customer. These ownership schemes are an extremely popular way to enjoy boating without the full financial burden of outright ownership.

Depending on the company you choose, you’ll get a chance to sail up to 12 weeks a year in the most beautiful destinations in the world. If you sign up with Sunsail , for example, you’ll  have a dedicated owner team to deal with all the administration side of the ownership scheme, a range of Dufour yachts , or Leopard catamaran to choose from, up to 12 weeks of holiday per year, access to many of the company’s bases around the world, use of other Sunsail boats of equivalent size, no harbour fees, no insurance, and no maintenance costs. You will also have a choice of taking a fixed/guaranteed monthly income, or a reduced purchase price at the end of the contract. 

Dream Yacht Worldwide is equally attractive with its worry-free charter ownership management programmes, with a total of seven options to choose from and, like most schemes like this, allows you up to 12 weeks a year sailing on either your own or a similar yacht, in 40+ of the world’s best charter destinations.

Sail Ionian’s charter yacht partnership scheme has been around for the last 18 years and has proved a great success with an unprecedented level of second term investment. The company reports that 80% of charter yacht partnership investors have re-invested in a new yacht for an additional five years, so it’s worth looking at what Sail Ionian has to offer.

Syndicates/fractional ownership 

This is a great way of sharing the purchase and running costs of owning a yacht with a group of people you know, but there is a lot to consider in legal terms and, it is imperative you have an agreement formalised from the outset. Having an agreement in place will help avoid any clashes between members, not only about usage of the boat, and ongoing expenses, maintenance and repair but also about if/when you want to terminate your part of the contract.

It makes sense therefore to use a professional managed boat share company that is set up to deal with all the necessary paperwork and any problems that arise. A good start is the RYA’s legal department that offers advice on Buying with a Syndicate, or  sharingcontracts.com – a company that offers ready-made boat share contracts. 

For an all-in-one package, you might like to consider signing up with the yacht share brokerage company Yacht Fractions.  Established in 1991, this company was one of the first to launch a scheme of this sort and operates in the UK as well as globally. The website lists an extensive range of yachts to choose from, so all you need to do is pick your yacht and let Yacht Fractions deal with all the share agreement paperwork and legal issues. 

Gym-style membership schemes

If you want the flexibility of owning a yacht but don’t want the commitment, then this sort of gym-style membership where you can step on and off without the hassle of boat maintenance and berthing fees, this is the one for you. There are several UK basked companies such as Flexisail , Pure Latitude Boat Club , Hamble Point Yacht Charters , and Fairview Sailing offering this subscription-style service, and it is becoming more and more popular as would-be boatowners/boatowners realise the advantages.

As with all schemes, you need to read the fine details before signing up to see how it works because in most cases there is a one off ‘club’ joining fee plus a monthly subscription, and you need a RYA Day Skipper and VHF qualifications. Most have variety of membership levels, and a good selection of yachts to suit you requirements.

Pure Latitude has four bases in southern England, and, for a standard membership of £700 monthly fee (on a points basis), you have the choice of 20+ sail and motor boats to use, with around 15-20 days of boating a year. 

Flexisail has three membership levels – Midweek, Weekend, Anytime – with the Midweek option from £500 per month with up to 30 days sailing a year. This company’s Flexibook online booking system is popular too, which allows you to make, cancel, swap or exchange time with other members at any time, up to 12 months ahead.

Finally, Hamble Point Charter Membership is simple  and flexible, and its Standard membership scheme starts at £300 per month, which gives you a chance to try out a large range of yachts from 30ft to 56ft. There is no joining fee, and you get up to 41 days of sailing a year.

After recent success in their Patrol Boat Autonomy (PBA) trial earlier this year, Austal Australia and Greenroom Robotics have signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) centred on collaboration in the watercraft sector.

The SPA will develop boat products, services and technologies that may reduce crewing, increase safety, and enable remote and autonomous operation of vessels designed and constructed by Austal Australia.

These plans build on the successful PBA trial conducted in Western Australia throughout March and April 2024, wherein an Armidale -class patrol boat, HMAS Maitland , was renamed the Sentinel after it was converted to an autonomous boat. According to the contractor, she is the largest vessel in Australia to be operated remotely or autonomously.

At the time, the Sentinel  was extensively modified to enable remote and autonomous operations, including modifications to navigation, communications, bilges, CCTV, and electrical systems. Sensors and computer units were also added by Greenroom Robotics to inform and host the Autonomous Control System, GAMA.

Austal Australia chief technology officer, Dr. Glenn Callow, remarked that the SPA demonstrated a commitment to developing industry-leading remote and autonomous technologies, aligned with AUKUS Pillar II objectives.

Often overlooked by the deterrent of nuclear-powered submarines – the first pillar of the trilateral pact between Australia, the UK and the US (AUKUS) – Pillar II is a unique initiative in its own right, encompassing emerging trends across all five domains.

Electric Candela hydrofoil boat sets world record by crossing Baltic Sea

An all-electric hydrofoiling boat from Swedish company Candela has set two new world records by travelling between Stockholm and the Finnish autonomous region of Åland, marking the first time an electric boat has crossed the Baltic Sea.

Candela, which has developed a range of electric hydrofoil boats and ships, wanted to demonstrate that “that zero-emission sea travel is not only possible today, but that foiling electric ships and boats are so much cheaper to operate than fossil-fuelled vessels.”

The record-breaking journey was undertaken in the Candela C-8, a €330,000 ($A544,500) leisure craft, equipped with a battery from technology partner Polestar.

The journey covered 150 nautical miles from the port of Frihamn in Stockholm, Sweden, to Mariehamn, the capital and largest town of the Åland Islands, an autonomous region of Finland, with a charging stop in Kapellskär.

While charging along the trip was made mostly with existing charging infrastructure, a 40kW Kempower Movable Charger was needed in Kapellskär.

Leaving from Frihamn at 6am, the Candela C-8 made it to Mariehamn by lunchtime, and returned to Frihamn the same day.

“The disadvantage of electric boats has been their short range, due to traditional boat hulls consuming so much energy,” said Gustav Hasselskog , the company’s CEO and founder.

“With our hydrofoil technology, we combine high speed and range, but you get so many other benefits. Flying over the Åland Sea in total silence and without slamming was absolutely magical.”

A gasoline-powered chase boat of similar size accompanied the Candela C-8 on the journey and had to be refuelled for a cost of €750, or around $A1,230. For comparison, the Candela C-8 consumed 213 kWh of electricity, at a cost of about €40-50 (around $A66-83).

“We actually had range anxiety, but not for the Candela,” said Gustav Hasselskog.

“The irony is that the photographer’s gasoline-powered chase boat had to refuel six times during the trip, while we only charged three times.

“We’re talking about 95% lower operating costs,” concluded Hasselskog. “This is a revolution that makes waterborne transöport competitive with land transport in terms of costs, which we will now demonstrate in public transport in Stockholm.”

We are definitely in an age of disruption, as much as the bashers, critics and cynics like to deny it. Amazing, 1/25th the cost of their ICE partner boat! And quieter, cleaner and calmer too boot!

Google informs me a litre of diesel is € 1.668, so that trip would have used ~450 litres of diesel, or 4,500 kWh. That’s shockingly inefficient.

Unless the ICE partner boat was a similar sized hydrofoil design, it’s comparing apples and oranges. Candela’s own website reckons hydrofoils are up to 80% more efficient than conventional hulled boats, which translates to about 50 litres of fuel.

Please stick to the script. We’re not here to point out inconsistencies. We’re here to deride the people who don’t agree with us. Otherwise, what’s the point of social media?

The point of the voyage WAS demonstrating the efficiency of their hydrofoil design. They used the electric motor to drive home the point.

Get back to us when it can cross an ocean. Anyone can cross a sea. Proof of concept can be done with rubber bands, icypole sticks and plastic straws.

Why would a 30 ft leisure craft need to cross the Atlantic? There are currently no 30 ft leisure craft, ICE or otherwise, that can cross the Atlantic.

Fishing boat carrying £100,000,000 of cocaine busted off Cornwall coast

Cocaine worth an estimated £100,000,000 has been stopped from reaching the streets after a fishing boat was intercepted off the coast of Britain.

The drugs were discovered when Border Force officers stopped a vessel, called the Lily Lola, at sea near Newquay, Cornwall , on Friday afternoon.

Images show 17 brick-shaped packages, mostly in brown wrapping with the label ‘pezx’.

The NCA estimates the one-tonne batch’s street value to be roughly £100,000,000.

Four men were arrested, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said.

Michael Kelly, 45, of Portway, Manchester , Jon Paul Williams, 46, of St Thomas, Swansea, Patrick Godfrey, 30, of Port Tennant, Swansea, and Jake Marchant, 26, of no fixed address, were all charged with importing a controlled class A drug.

They remain in custody and are due to appear at at Bodmin Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Branch commander Derek Evans said: ‘This is a significant amount of cocaine that will represent a huge loss for the organised crime group that attempted to import it into the UK.

‘With our partners at Border Force and the Joint Maritime Security Centre, we have successfully removed this harmful drug consignment from the criminal marketplace.

‘Its onward supply would have fuelled exploitation through county lines activity as well as serious violence and knife crime.

‘Our investigation into this importation continues.’

Boat crashes into breakwater metres away from woman

A man had to be treated by paramedics after a motorboat crashed into a breakwater. An air ambulance landed at Mount Batten this afternoon after the boat dramatically ran aground just metres from where a woman was sitting.

Eyewitnesses say the vessel left Sutton Harbour this afternoon (Tuesday, September 17), appearing to intend to sail around Mount Batten. However, it was later photographed aground at the breakwater.

Plymouth Coastguard Rescue Team and the RNLI were called to the incident at around 2.50pm today. A spokesperson for HM Coastguard told PlymouthLive that a vessel was reported to have run aground at the Mount Batten breakwater.

An eyewitness said he and his wife saw the motorboat heading out of Sutton Harbour through the turntable bridge. "From there it was heading towards Mount Batten breakwater, presumably to go past it, to head on out," they said.

"After a couple of minutes a pilot boat tied up and two guys got off, jumped into a twin engine boat and with great haste, went chasing off in the same direction. By the time we walked up to Dutton's Cafe, the motor boat was already on the rocks."

Another witness said: "My daughter has just witnessed a boat crash into the rocks four meters away from her."

South Western Ambulance Service vehicles were seen in the area and video footage also shows a helicopter from Devon Air Ambulance landing. One man was taken into the care of paramedics, but it is unclear if he was then taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: "HM Coastguard coordinated the response to a motor vessel reported to have gone aground at the Mount Batten breakwater, Plymouth, at about 2.50pm on 17 September.

"The vessel was moved to a pontoon where the man was taken into the care of the South Western Ambulance Service. Plymouth Coastguard Rescue Team and the RNLI's inshore lifeboat from Plymouth attended."
