Noroton Yacht Club Claims Victory at 2024 New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Regatta

' src=

In a stunning comeback, Noroton Yacht Club from Darien, Conn., reclaimed its title as champions at the 2024 New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Regatta. The club, which had been a dominant force since the regatta’s inception in 2010, saw its six-year winning streak end in 2016 and had struggled to regain its former glory. However, with a commanding 4-1 record on the final day of racing, Noroton surged past Day 2 leader Texas Corinthian Yacht Club to clinch the win. Newport Harbor Yacht Club finished third, while Southern Yacht Club secured fourth place.

“We are thrilled to have won the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Team Race,” said Michael Rudnick, Noroton Yacht Club Team Captain. “We take it one race at a time. We checked the scores just before the last race to see where things stood, and it was a great feeling when we realized we had it.”

The New York Yacht Club has been a pioneer in adult team racing since the early 2000s, with the creation of several regattas, including the Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Commodore George R. Hinman Masters Trophy in 2000, the Morgan Cup in 2003, and the Grandmasters Team Race Regatta in 2010. The Grandmasters event requires skippers to be at least 60 years old and crew members to be over 50, ensuring a unique competition that draws top adult team racers from the United States and Europe. All three regattas are held over consecutive weekends in August at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court, using the Club’s fleet of 22 Sonar keelboats. This year’s regatta was sponsored by Helly Hansen, Peters & May, Hammetts Hotel, and Safe Harbor Marinas.

One of the key distinctions between team racing and fleet racing is the strategic focus on competitors behind you. In team racing, the objective is to outmaneuver and control opponents early, often right after the start. “Everybody wants to chase,” explained Noroton skipper Tom Kinney. “Coach Karl [Ziegler] always says there’s a play, and it’s always behind you. In fleet racing, this mindset doesn’t work. But in team racing, it’s crucial.”

The strength of Noroton’s program lies in consistent practice. “We try to race every Thursday night from April until late August,” Rudnick shared. “It’s a great opportunity for sailors of all ages to mix it up and hone their skills. We don’t keep score; it’s all about training and getting everyone involved.”

Noroton’s familiarity with light-air conditions also played a significant role in their victory. The regatta was characterized by breezes rarely exceeding 12 knots, conditions that suited Noroton’s expertise. “We’re good in light air,” Rudnick said. “Western Long Island Sound is typically a light-air venue, so we knew the boat and conditions well. We practice with kites regularly, so the more kites, the better for us.”

As the dust settles on another successful regatta, questions arise about whether this victory marks the beginning of a new winning streak for Noroton. Texas Corinthian Yacht Club, winners in 2021 and 2022, will be eager for redemption next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the fleet continues to close the gap on the top teams, promising even more thrilling competition in the future.

However, the camaraderie and sportsmanship of the Grandmasters event are what truly set it apart. “The New York Yacht Club does an amazing job,” said Rudnick. “The atmosphere is always fantastic. Last night in the tent was a perfect example. We really enjoy coming here every time.”

From the Bride…  We didn’t have a decorating “theme,” but I guess food ended up being the running theme for the weekend (and our lives). Other than wanting the wedding to be simple, beautiful, and fun, we wanted it to be delicious and for everyone to experience some of our favorite foods! Even though this was a sit down dinner at the New York Yacht Club, we didn’t want the meal to feel stuffy. The chef at the club was wonderful and helped us create a family style menu that reflected some of our most favorite dishes – fried chicken and macaroni n’ cheese! It was the first time they had served these dishes and they were a huge success! For dessert we had simple sheet cakes–red velvet and chocolate. As a favor at the end of the evening we handed out bottles of Cholula hot sauce. Cholula is our favorite hot sauce, so much so that we named our little Chihuahua after it (we call her Lula for short.) We had another poster made on Etsy to stand on the table, it read: “Hot Sauce So Good We Named Our Dog After It. Please Take One at Your Own Risk!”

On all of our vacations, Jason likes to take photos of EVERY meal and dish we eat at memorable restaurants. This resulted in hundreds of food images taking up space on our computers. We decided to use these as place cards at the wedding. We had tables named after various places we’ve visited (Tokyo, Kyoto, Patagonia, Napa Valley, Atlanta, etc) and at each person’s place setting they had an image of a meal we’d eaten affixed to a beautiful card with their name on it. We then wrote the name of the meal and restaurant on the back of each card. So for Tokyo there were 10 beautiful pictures of sushi, tempura, etc. waiting for people when they sat down! Everyone knows that Jason is very passionate about food so it was a great conversation starter!

After all the stressful big moments were over (like the first dance, speeches, etc) and everything had gone off without a hitch (and truly exceeded my expectations), Jason and I took a moment to just step back, take a deep breath, and appreciate how truly amazing the night was. People were having a fantastic time dancing – my uncle even danced on a chair! To see everyone having so much fun was the cherry on top of this wonderful day and such a relief after months and months of planning. It was an amazing party and that is just what we wanted. I know everyone says it, but really try to slow down, look around, and appreciate every second of the weekend. It truly goes by so fast.

So many amazing photos to share from this NYYC Newport wedding. We had so much fun with Katy, Peter and all their incredible friends/family and wanted to thank them for being so welcoming and inclusive throughout the entire wedding weekend! West Coast Clubs Travel East to the New York Yacht Club Resolute Cup

A recent press release from the New York Yacht Club highlighted Bay Area racer Daniel Thielman and his crew from the Corinthian Yacht Club as a new invitee to compete in the annual New York Yacht Club Resolute Cup. This year, 28 teams have been invited to this all-amateur sailing event, including seven from the West Coast: California Yacht Club, Corinthian YC of San Francisco, Newport Harbor Yacht Club, San Diego Yacht Club, Seattle Yacht Club, St. Francis Yacht Club, and San Francisco Yacht Club.

Kuai with blue spinnaker

Beyond Thielman’s active campaigning of his Melges 32 Kuai on the Bay, he’s also been active nationally, winning multiple championships in the Melges 20 class, where he’s also the defending world champion. He recently returned to the Corinthian Yacht Club of San Francisco with the IC37 National Championship title won during New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport, RI, sailed July 17–20. This September, however, will mark the first time that his club has fielded a team in the Resolute Cup, motivated by Thielman’s desire to qualify for the prestigious Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, which will next take place in September 2025.

The CYC IC37 Kuai racing in the national championship. Now sailing for Resolute Cup.

“Members of our Corinthian Yacht Club purchased an IC37 back in 2023 to prepare for the Invitational Cup,” said Thielman. “After a year of preparation, we’ve assembled a team that is ready to make a qualifying bid.”

Thielman will be sailing with trimmers Jen Canestra and Auric Horneman, who have been his constant and trusted teammates for over 10 years of racing Melges boats together, and Nick Voss.

“We currently race in the Melges 20, Melges 14, and IC37 one-design fleets around the country, and PHRF race our Melges 32 on San Francisco Bay,” Thielman says. “We hope that adding Nick as a tactician for the Resolute Cup, with his many years of junior, college and adult team racing experience, will give us the edge we need to be competitive.”

Daniel Thielman racing in the IC37s will now sail in the Resolute Cup.

Since 2010, the Resolute Cup has served as a Corinthian championship for US yacht clubs and the only guaranteed pathway for an American club to earn a berth in the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, Corinthian (amateur) sailing’s most prestigious international competition. The seventh edition of the biennial competition — the event was not sailed in 2020 — is scheduled for September 9 to 14 at the New York Yacht Club, Harbour Court, in Newport, RI. The 2024 Resolute Cup will utilize the Club’s fleet of Sonars, with provided sails, equalized rig tune and on-the-water umpiring ensuring sailing’s ultimate level playing field. The 2024 New York Yacht Club Regatta Association regatta calendar is supported by Helly Hansen, Hammetts Hotel, Safe Harbor Marinas and Peters & May.

While Thielman has shown remarkable ability across multiple one-design classes, the Sonar, a displacement boat with a symmetric spinnaker, is a bit of a departure from what he and his team normally sail.

The New York Yacht Club's matched fleet of Sonars will challenge the whole fleet.

“Every boat we own, and every fleet we compete in, has asymmetric kites,” he says. “We have gotten in limited practices on J/22s to prepare, but with our aggressive championship race schedule in other fleets, we are mostly going to be winging it with a symmetric kite. I would not be surprised if we have a slow start, with results that steadily improve throughout the week.”

The complete list of competing teams is here: American Yacht Club, Rye, NY; Austin (Texas) Yacht Club; Bay Waveland Yacht Club, Bay St. Louis, MS; Bayview Yacht Club, Detroit, MI.; California Yacht Club, Marina del Rey, CA; Carolina Yacht Club, Charleston, SC; Charleston Yacht Club, Charleston, SC; Chicago (IL) Yacht Club; Corinthian Yacht Club, Marblehead, MA; Corinthian Yacht Club of San Francisco, Tiburon, CA; Eastern Yacht Club, Marblehead, MA; Edgewater Yacht Club, Cleveland, Ohio; Fort Worth (Texas) Yacht Club; Lakewood Yacht Club, Seabrook, Texas; Larchmont (NY.) Yacht Club; Little Traverse Yacht Club, Harbor Springs, MI; Mystic River Mudheads Sailing Association, West Mystic, CT; New York (NY) Yacht Club; Newport Harbor Yacht Club, Newport Beach, CA.; Pensacola (FL) Yacht Club; San Diego (CA) Yacht Club; Seattle (WA) Yacht Club; Shelter Island Yacht Club, Shelter Island Heights, NY; Southern Yacht Club, New Orleans, LA; St. Francis Yacht Club, San Francisco, CA; Stamford (CT) Yacht Club; Storm Trysail Club (Larchmont, NY); San Francisco Yacht Club, Belvedere, CA.

“We’re good in light air,” he says. “Western Long Island Sound is a very light-air venue. We know the boat. We know the conditions here. We spend a lot of time up here, so I think the conditions really were helpful for us. We practice with kites all the time. So the more kites, the better.” Time will tell whether this is the start of another extended winning streak. The Texas Corinthian team, which won the event in 2021 and 2022. is eager for redemption next year. And the rest of the fleet isn’t far off the standard set by the top teams. One thing that is for sure is the genuine enjoyment all the Grandmaster competitors. While the events with younger sailors may be more intense, this event always seems to have the best atmosphere. “New York Yacht Club just does an amazing job,” says Rudnick. “W’ve done a lot of masters regattas. I’ve sailed to Morgan a bunch of times. I think at the Grandmasters the camaraderie and the sportsmanship is top flight, and it’s just so nice. Last night, it was really great being in the tent. Just fantastic. We really enjoy it every time.”

Want to dine at one of these 4 hot New York-backed restaurants? You'll have to book a room

  • The Boca Raton resort is home to three unique Major Food Group restaurants.
  • The restaurants play a key role in the resort's ongoing makeover.
  • For locals looking to get away without going too far, a foodie-focused staycation is made more palatable with The Boca Raton's current limited-time summer specials.

A Palm Beach County resort with a near 100-year legacy is home to a handful of ultra-exclusive restaurants you won't find anywhere else, each executed by a New York-based restaurant group that's slowly expanding its reach across South Florida.

Local diners may already be familiar with the trio of restaurateurs behind Major Food Group (MFG), who together operate more than a dozen concepts that have helped to transform the New York City dining scene. In Florida, many diners know them for their Greenwich Village Italian-American hotspot, Carbone, which expanded to Miami with a second outpost in 2021, and has since opened outposts of ZZ's, Contessa, Sadelle's, and Dirty French.

What area gastronomes may not know, however, is that Palm Beach County is also home to three unique MFG-designed restaurants. Located exclusively at The Boca Raton, they would likely be drawing droves of diners if it weren't for the fact they are available only to the club's members, or those staying on resort property.

The 200-acre resort is home to five distinct hotels and 13 dining venues, a variety of restaurants and lounges that include the lakefront Palm Court cocktail lounge and all-day dining at Harbor House; an oceanfront Beach Club lounge; fine dining at the yacht club with Flybridge; the Spa Café offering cold-pressed juice, cocktails, and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine; and a poolside eatery dubbed Burger Bar.

In the last few years The Boca Raton has opened four MFG restaurants, three of which were designed especially for the hotel — Flamingo Grill, Principessa Ristorante, and the Japanese Bocce Club.

The restaurants play a key role in the resort's ongoing makeover — a nearly decade long, $200 million renovation under the guidance of The Boca Raton's CEO Daniel Hostettler.

The renovations include an oceanfront luxury experience set to be unveiled later this year with the all-new Beach Club, a half-mile of private beach where a 27-story tower will open as part of the property's $45 million phase two transformation.

The goal of each, says Hostettler, was to craft a true luxury vacation experience, which also required a strategic partnership for the reimagining of the culinary offerings at The Boca Raton.

From Miami to Boca Raton, Major Food Group began with Italian

MFG debuted its first Florida outpost of its flagship Italian restaurant in Miami Beach, quickly expanding with Dirty French, HaSalon, Sadelle's, and Contessa — and promises of more to come . The rapid growth sparked the idea for a partnership.

"Out of the dozen dining outlets, we opted to bring a world-class operator to reimagine a handful, and Major Food Group really stood out to us," says Hostettler. "Each were very much driven by [MFG co-owners Mario Carbone and Jeff Zalaznick's] combined vision for something unique and special, made just for The Boca Raton."

Today, two such hotel partnerships exist with MFG, with another in the works. They include NYC's Ludlow Hotel, which features the brand's Dirty French steakhouse; Italian-themed Contessa at Newbury Boston; and the recent announcement made by Terra and One Thousand Group to partner with MFG in their $500 million, 58-story condominium development in Miami's Edgewater neighborhood known as The Villa.

The only caveat: you must be a member resort guest to dine at these Boca Raton-based MFG restaurants.

Summer specials put this food staycation within reach

For locals looking to get away without going too far, a foodie-focused staycation is made more palatable with The Boca Raton's current limited-time summer specials.

Geared towards locals, the " Have It All " package can be used to book stays through December 15, and includes up to $300 nightly credit usable at each of the property's restaurants and bars. A " Florida Staycation " package, available between July 28 and September 16, is designed for families, allowing kids under 12 eat free alongside complimentary access to Banyan Bunch kids club and summer camp.

The Flamingo Grill

The Grill at the Seagram Building was the inspiration for this sophisticated supper club. The Flamingo Grill is designed as a mid-century-style chophouse with modern, Floridian flare. The glamorous dining room evokes South Florida's golden age where dinner and entertainment paired naturally, making it the perfect space to enjoy MFG's famous seafood towers; starters like crab cakes and steak tartare; a classic wedge salad or shrimp cocktail; and dry-aged steaks or seafood like grilled branzino.

Japanese Bocce Club

A complete departure from MFG's signature steakhouses and Italian fare, this signature concept focuses on traditional Japanese cuisine with an energetic vibe thanks to an indoor/outdoor setting allowing guests to play a game of croquet and bocce between courses. An assortment of true Japanese wagyu beef is reason alone to visit, in addition to dishes crafted by chef de cuisine Takao Soejima, who joined The Boca Raton at Morimoto Sushi Bar where he worked closely with Masaharu Morimoto. Menu highlights include expertly-crafted sushi, a curated selection of crispy rice, ponzu-butter marinated Skull Island shrimp, and Soejima's one-of-a-kind BBQ spare ribs. Specialty cocktails and a curated selection of sake round out the menu.

With locations in New York City, Las Vegas, Paris, and Miami, Sadelle's is the MFG's classic breakfast and lunch spot. At The Boca Raton, guests and members can grab items to-go from the takeout counter, or enjoy seated service where the brand's signature blue lacquer paneling evokes the ambiance of a European patisserie. The all-day, deli-inspired menu specializes in quintessential breakfast and brunch classics from sliced-to-order smoked salmon and stacks of Sadelle's famous bagels to matzo ball soup, triple-decker sandwiches, and entrée-style salads.

Principessa Ristorante

Considered the lakeside jewel at The Boca Raton, this upscale Italian eatery is reminiscent of MFG's Contessa, but with a look and feel all its own. A large outdoor terrace is ideal for alfresco dining while the historic 1930s interior channels the grand villas and resorts of Lake Como. Traditional Italian cuisine is the focus here, a sprawling menu that begins with antipasti, salads, and vegetable-focused small plates to pizzas and handmade pasta. Meat and seafood entrées include a classic branzino for two, a giant bone-in veal chop, and a Tuscan classic filet Florentine. Signature offerings also include an assortment of house-made gelato, decadent desserts, and an extensive wine list.

America's Cup sailing is around the corner. Did you know it has ties to North Jersey?

4-minute read.

Portrait of David M. Zimmer

The Olympics are over, but the oldest competition in international sports is just around the corner.

The America's Cup sailing event, founded in 1851, returned on Thursday with a preliminary regatta off the coast of Barcelona that sets the stage for a one-on-one final in October.

One of the challengers is a homegrown one: the New York Yacht Club.

Now headquartered deep in the heart of Manhattan, hosting club regattas out of Newport, Rhode Island, and having its racing team training in Pensacola, Florida, the club and America's Cup originator was initially based on the Hudson River. Its first clubhouse was in North Jersey.

Built in Hoboken in 1845, the Gothic cottage first stood by the waterside at Elysian Fields, near the bluff that holds Stevens Institute of Technology. John Cox Stevens, the club's first commodore, donated the land at the foot of 11th Street. His brother, Edwin Augustus Stevens, founded the university. Both were involved with the creation of the first winner of the America's Cup, a yacht named America.

America's Cup's founders

The brothers came from one of the most distinguished families in U.S. history. Their grandfather served in the Continental Congress, and their father, John Stevens, was a Revolutionary War colonel who became a pioneering entrepreneur and an inventor of steam engines and boats.

From their mansion overlooking the Hudson River and Manhattan Island, the colonel and his sons developed the first steam ferry to cross the Hudson. When Robert Fulton secured a monopoly on Hudson River steamship navigation, the Stevens family shifted its focus to other lucrative ventures. In 1809, the family's vessel Phoenix became the first steamer to operate offshore when it began service in Philadelphia.

Five years earlier, in 1804, a 19-year-old John Cox Stevens piloted the first propeller-driven boat. Shortly thereafter, he built a sailing yacht called Diver and raced it against fishing boats and ferries in New York Harbor for wagers. In 1844, he and his friends founded the New York Yacht Club aboard his yacht Gimcrack.

The clubhouse, which was modest compared with the club's current Beaux-Arts landmark in New York City, served as the center of club activities for 23 years, records show. That span covered the development, construction and trials of the yacht America.

America's Cup has North Jersey origins

The yacht America was designed by George Steers, a self-taught innovator of yacht design, to challenge the best in the United Kingdom. Its cotton duck sails were sourced from John Colt's mill in Paterson. When the yacht made it to Britain's Isle of Wight, the Royal Yacht Squadron organized a fleet race on Aug. 22, 1851. The winner received a silver trophy valued at 100 pounds sterling. They called it the Hundred Guinea Cup. It is now known as America's Cup, after the yacht that won it.

Within two months, John Cox Stevens and the syndicate that owned America had sold it and given the trophy to the club. The cup came with conditions. According to its formal Deed of Gift, it must serve as an everlasting prize for “friendly competition between foreign countries.” The cup's holder must welcome challengers.

The first challenger was the Royal Thames Yacht Club and a yacht called Cambria. The competition held in New York Harbor on Aug. 8, 1870, was won by the New York Yacht Club. The club went on to win every America's Cup match thereafter until 1983.

By then, the clubhouse was long gone. It survived calls for demolition in the early 20th century and in 1904 moved from its home just north of Castle Point in Hoboken to Glen Cove, Long Island, to serve as "Station 10." At a time, there were 11 stations along the club's racing and cruising route where members could land and load.

Vastly different competition

For the second half of the 20th century, the clubhouse was on loan and on display at Mystic Seaport, the maritime museum in Connecticut. Since the start of this century, it has sat on the grounds of the club's racing base Harbour Court, in Newport, Rhode Island. The club's America's Cup yacht, called Patriot, was built and designed in Rhode Island.

A far cry from America, a 101-foot schooner that was used by the U.S. Navy during the Civil War, the 75-foot-long Patriot relies on a pair of hydraulic hydrofoils on either side of the hull to seemingly fly above the ocean's surface at speeds of more than 50 miles per hour. Due to that technology, the modern America's Cup is a vastly different competition from what it was just 20 years ago. Still, at its core, the cup remains an event in which wind-powered vessels must chart an ocean course to victory.

The last cup was a disaster for the New York Yacht Club, which in team American Magic had one of three challengers for the title held by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. That cup's Patriot capsized in the round-robin qualifiers and, after major repairs, finished last in the event.

America's Cup 2024

This year, five challenger teams are taking on the cup holders from New Zealand. They include American Magic and the new Patriot, led by Olympic gold medalists Tom Slingsby, who won for Australia, and Paul Goodison, for Great Britain.

The first look at them in action comes during the final America's Cup preliminary regatta from Aug. 22 to 25. The match racing event will feature four races per day, with the top two yachts, technically classified as AC75s, advancing to a one-race, winner-takes-all final.

The results of the preliminary regatta have no impact on the America’s Cup standings. Still, they were crucial for shaping team strategy.

The New Zealand team, as the cup defender, has a straight path to the America's Cup, held from Oct. 12 to 21. The five defenders, however, must face off in the Challenger Selection Series from Aug. 29 to Oct 7 for the right to compete in the America's Cup best-of-13 match race final.

The races will be streamed free on the event’s website, YouTube and Facebook. Coverage is also available in the U.S. on ESPN+.

  • Alinghi Red Bull Racing (Switzerland).
  • Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team (Italy).
  • NYYC American Magic (U.S.).

  • The preliminaries were held August 22 to 25, 2024, in Barcelona, Spain.

Great day! Can't wait to go back. I rented a boat to take my son and his friends tubing for the first time (5-10 years old). The kids had a blast. Our captain was very friendly and amazing with them (like a camp counselor- which us parents appreciated). He pulled the younger ones at a slower pace and kicked it up a notch for the moms and older ones. From booking to departure, the experience was seamless. We're looking forward to booking again for a nice relaxing adults only boat :)

Photo of Sheryl M.

Not a good place. Joe the owner like used car salesman. This is not boating. This is having a very nice captain (but with sketchy coast guard details) who moves for 10 or 15 mins to an open bay and then basically u sit there for 2 hours. They advertised certain equipment to be onboard but never appeared. Finally i asked if we could drive a but and he reluctantly did. But dont expect much fun for 4500 plus 20 percent tip. Guess joe tells them not to use any gas. Go elsewhere.

Start to finish my experience with this company was nothing short of AMAZING!!!!! 5 star VIP treatment, from the customer service rep that helped me select a boat to the boat captain who drove us. My family and I were treated like royalty. Chartered a boat for 4 hours for my mothers 65th birthday, my parents aren't boat people but convinced them to go along. After our outing with Yacht Hampton I'm happy to share my parents are now boat people! I can't say enough about how amazing the owner Joe was. My father is disabled after suffering multiple strokes which has severely impaired his mobility. Joe the owner went out of his way to prepare a pick up for my father which allowed us to take him out on the boat as well, the captain Michael was an awesome guy as well, you could say he literally carried my father on his back to help get him on the boat! We brought a cooler with food and drinks, anchored in a cove where we ate, drank, swam and relaxed. Ended the charter with an hour of tubing which was super fun! The only place to charter a boat in the Hamptons in my opinion. Well maintained fleet of late model vessels with professional licensed captains and amazing customer service. What I'm most impressed with and taken back by is the effort and follow up the owner and staff put into making sure my handicapped father was able to join us for my mother's birthday boat outing.

We rented a boat from Yacht Hampton a few weeks in advance for my sisters bachelorette party. When we arrived at the dock we received a call that the boat we rented was broken and they couldn't fix it in time. They offered us a smaller boat and a partial refund to which we agreed. When that boat was supposed to arrive they called again and said that boat wasn't available either and that we were basically out of luck. If it wasn't for one of our bridesmaids who pushed heavily for a solution, they would have left us hanging. They ended up being able to get us an upgraded yacht later in the day for no additional charge that was beautiful, but we had to rearrange our whole day to make that happen, and I believe that without the bridesmaid who pushed them to make something happen for us, they would have left us without a boat and ultimately a ruined bachelorette party. Although they solved our problem, they made our morning incredibly stressful and I likely would never book with them again.
