West Vancouver Yacht Club Celebrates 75 Years

By patrick matishak.

west vancouver yacht club menu

While yacht clubs are founded on all things boating, and generally “messing about in boats,” it is the people who make them truly special. In 1945, when six like-minded boaters came together to sign the charter forming the West Vancouver Yacht Club , they did not foresee a 75th Anniversary celebration in the club’s future.

In the preliminary years, the club established a few temporary moorage locations. At best, 12 mooring buoys were located in Pilot Cove. A permanent home base for the club appeared unattainable. Late in 1950, during usual chitchat amongst members moored at a weekend gathering, a significant plan was hatched: a small group of members would form a syndicate and create a permanent mooring facility. In quick succession, discussions took place that lead to a group of 18 members who purchased property at their desired location, West Vancouver’s Fisherman’s Cove. They dredged, piled and supplied floats, which were turned over to West Vancouver Yacht Club’s ownership, management and operation. In return, the syndicate members were offered reduced moorage fees and membership dues.

When the syndicate purchased the first lot in Fisherman’s Cove, a small white cabin on the property became the Clubhouse. Over the course of a few years, additional adjacent properties were acquired, assembling the land and water lots the club enjoys today. A new clubhouse was built in 1963. A Yachting Centre was added in 2002, to serve as the headquarters for the expanding, very active, youth sailing program. To date, the clubhouse has undergone several renovations, with the most recent and significant enhancement completed in 2012. The dock configuration was redesigned in 2013. Subsequently, a redevelopment project eliminated some smaller moorage, accommodating larger and beamier vessels. This redevelopment further supported the club’s environmental stewardship efforts, earning the Georgia Strait Alliance’s Clean Marine BC Five-Anchor Eco-Rating certification.

Over the years, the club developed outstations at Kendrick Island in the Gulf Islands, and Elliot Bay in Howe Sound. Outstations in Telegraph Harbour and Pender Harbour are also very popular cruising destinations for members.

Two annual club signature events are the Southern Straits Yacht Race and the Pumpkin Bowl Regatta. Inaugurated in 1969, the Easter weekend Southern Straits attracts racers from around the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Crews come to compete, make new acquaintances, rekindle old ones and share in the camaraderie of sailboat racing. Celebrating 21 years, Pumpkin Bowl is a junior/intermediate event with a Halloween theme. The regatta has become the premier local dinghy racing event for young sailors, attracting over 200 competitors annually. These events, in addition to a number of races and regattas, including the summer Wednesday Evening Race Series, and the winter Snowflake Races, make for an active and engaged sailing fleet.

Cruisers are not left out of the fun. Frequent cruises and gatherings up and down our beautiful coast have been chronicled over the years in the Foghorn, a monthly WVYC publication.

The West Vancouver Yacht Club has always been a progressive, family friendly club, with active and engaged members cruising, racing, socializing, volunteering and supporting each other. Our success is attributed to retaining these values as times and circumstances have transitioned through 75 years. Looking ahead, we see a bright future, in continuing to build an active and engaged membership of all ages, who share a passion for “messing about in boats”.

Business name : West Vancouver Yacht Club

A yacht club is formed by a group of people with a common interest in using boats to get away from land and enjoy cruising local and distant waters, racing for the thrill of personal combat against other sailors and the elements, or just messing about on boats. In the children’s classic “The Wind in the Willows”, it is described thus: “There is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats…or with boats…in or out of ’em, it doesn’t matter.”

West Vancouver Yacht Club has just such beginnings and aspirations. Formed in 1945, the Club consisted of 45 people with only 6 boats between the lot of them. In 1946 the first Sailpast was held, and Club members and friends have been enjoying this annual event that starts the boating season every year since.

Humble beginnings, started by the dreams of a few, moved on to acquire the foreshore rights in Fisherman’s Cove in 1951 with a small cottage for a clubhouse. By 1963 the clubhouse you see overlooking the moorage was completed and then extensively updated in 2012. Much of the work carried out on Club projects is through members’ volunteering labour and expertise; volunteering is a mainstay of Club participation and camaraderie.

Many accomplishments over the years have contributed immensely to the enjoyment all the members have for “messing about in boats”. The annual Southern Straits Yacht Race brings sailors and boats to the Straits of Georgia to challenge each other in the boisterous spring weather conditions. Outstations have been added at Gambier Island and Kendrick Island and more recently with leased space in Pender Harbour and Telegraph Harbour. The Club sail training program, designed to help youngsters and adults become proficient in the skills of sailing, is now one of the premier such programs available to anyone in the community, not just Club members. To serve this program, the Sailing Center was built in 2002 as a focus for activity and learning in all aspects of small boat sailing.

  • After Two-Year Hiatus, Southern Straits is Back!

The 52 nd Southern Straits Classic hosted by West Vancouver Yacht Club is set for April 15 – 17, 2022 after taking two years off due to Covid-19.

They don’t call it a classic for nothin’! For sailboat racers around the Salish Sea, the year’s first major opportunity to stretch your sea legs on a significant distance race is Southern Straits. It’s famously fun, occasionally very sporty, often quite chilly… and totally worth the effort. Anyone who has hunkered down on the rail for a night on the strait and experienced the triumph of crossing the often-tricky finish line knows that it is one of the more rewarding experiences in boat racing.

Note for U.S. sailors planning to attend: keep up to date on Canada’s entry requirements for travelers as the date approaches — vaccination is currently required.

The racing community has dearly missed this big race in 2020 and 2021, and many are eager to come out for “Straits” this year. It’s back, and hopefully you can come test your mettle and skills, and have some fun on the glorious waters of the Georgia Strait.

Here’s all the info from race organizers:

The West Vancouver Yacht Club (WVYC) is excited to welcome back the Southern Straits Regatta after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 52 nd running of the Easter weekend race will see sailors crisscrossing Georgia Strait testing their strategy, skill, and endurance while racing overnight in early season conditions.

The Short, Medium, and Long courses range from 70 – 133 nautical miles. In addition, there is an Inshore Course (approximately 20 nautical miles) that will be conducted during daylight hours on Good Friday.

Race registration is now open and closes on Sunday, April 10 th . An early bird discount is available until February 28 th .

The WVYC will also be offering a one-day Coastal Personal Survival Course on April 3 rd for those who need to renew or take a Safety at Sea course. Registration details are online at Coastal Personal Survival Course .

WVYC is inviting all racers to participate in this challenging yachting tradition.   The races will take place over the weekend of April 15-17, 2022. Starting sequences will begin at 10:25 a.m. on Friday, April 15.

WVYC welcomes everyone to come down to Dundarave Pier in West Vancouver to see the parade of boats line up between nine and 10 a.m. and cheer on the competitors before the race begins.

We had a party here for my in-laws 40th anniversary. It is a beautiful place in a great location, with that grandness you would expect from a yacht club. They set us up in a separate room and there was a set menu. The meal started with some butternut squash soup. This was very nice. It was followed up with a Caesars salad that was just OK. The main course was salmon with veggies and rice. The salmon was overcooked, but this happens often in groups. My favorite part was the dessert, pecan pie with ice cream. Worth visiting.

*This is a review of the yacht club as a wedding locale only* What better place to feel like a princess for a day than someplace with "Royal" in the title. Oh wait, have some random kid come up to you before you walk down the aisle and tell you that you look like a princess might help too. Hubby and I were lucky enough to get married here going on a few years ago, but I've always wanted to yelp about how special this place was and made for an absolutely perfect day. I know, cliche right? But believe it or not, I'm not one of those people who dreamt about a wedding day and I didn't want to get overly involved with the details. I was the anti-Bridezilla. The person in charge of events at RVYC took care of a lot of the details since I was planning my wedding from California. I've heard about some wedding locations that have a lot of rules (no personal flowers or decorations, etc.) but the people at RVYC were very accommodating. We ended up getting married on the lawn behind the club which is perfect for a small to medium size wedding. We had to rent the chairs ourselves but that was relatively pain free. My bridesmaids and family also decorated the dining room themselves. They have several preset menus to choose from. We ended up doing a midday wedding and had a great assortment of hot and cold dishes. For a yacht club the prices were not ridiculous and at the time we actually thought it was pretty reasonable. The food was all five star. The desserts were absolutely incredible. They are also able to accommodate canapes and beverage service. No matter what the weather wants to do, the huge windows in the dining area provide a gorgeous view of the water, which is perfect for a place where it can potentially rain just about every day of the year. I come from a sailing family so I was lucky enough to be able to have a wedding here. At the time (I don't know what the rules are now) you had to be a member or closely associated to one. If you can snag it, I say by all means look at having your wedding at this yacht club.

Is a beautiful day watching this 6-meter world's from the upper deck at the rvyc The sashimi was very good tuna and salmon served very nicely and they had a really nice bison burger with melted cheese that was really nicely done as a special today Wonderful location It is not open to the public. A private club

Out of all the yacht clubs I've been to, this is definitely top 3. The clubhouse is beautiful, the location unbeatable, great service, good food, and a vibrant sailing community to mingle with. To dine here or use the club facilities, one must have a membership to the club or at a reciprocating club, so many simply can't go, but there is a way - start sailing! The Club maintains the most visited directory of sailors looking to crew for racing. Learn to sail a bit, sign up on the crew bank. Someone from the club will likely contact you asking you to crew on the recreational Wednesday night races, after which there is always a social gathering at the bar/restaurant for the sailors. If you sail on a member's boat, you'll likely be invited into the club for a drink or dinner. So, start sailing! Of course, if you like, you can always apply for membership, and knowing how to sail and having a sponsor for the club racing community won't hurt ;)

We attended a 50th birthday party at the RVYC this past weekend. We were impressed with the view, the service and the food. It was a fantastic venue and everyone one that attended had an amazing time! We also had a family dinner here a couple years ago with our children (7 & 2) and the lower level restaurant was also lovely, tasty food and very family friendly.

Photo of Karen C.

Came here for our work Christmas dinner party. Beautiful venue with view of the water. Nicely decorated in and out, not over done. The buffet dinner was fabulous! Good selection of seafood and the carvery had prime rib and turkey with all the fixings. The dessert table was just as long as the dinner buffet. Every dessert imaginable was available. Servers were attentive. Wonderful atmosphere.

Photo of Charles W.

Great food, great people, great view! A club worth joining if you are a boater of any type.

Photo of Nicole F.

I've been attending the Christmas buffet with my family, and coming here for special occasions since I was a baby. The food has always been great and the Club itself is gigantic and beautiful. I love the giant wooden spiral staircase. On sunny days you get an amazing view of all the boats, the ocean, and the mountains in the distance. The staff have always been warm, friendly, and attentive. The buffet this year was as great as expected. Although I felt slightly limited because I am a vegetarian and none of the hot dishes had labels, so I avoided anything that wasn't obviously a potato or something. The dessert buffet was to DIE for. I'm so glad I left room.. I piled my dessert plate high and headed back to the table. The chocolate cream pie was amazing, the cheesecake was creamy and wonderful.. one of the best I've ever had, and the eggnog creme brulee was incredible. I've been talking about it for days to anyone who will listen. The Christmas dinner buffet does have a dress code of "informal festive". Basically no jeans or athletic shoes. I was disappointed to see a few attendees ignore this. You are also not permitted to use your cellphone inside.

Photo of Angela W.

The view alone is worth five stars!!! We had the sushi and sashimi the toro was amazing!!! The tuna tartar also amazing. If you know a member get them to take you. If the wind is down you may even get to paddle board!

Photo of Kat D.

I must say, in the interest of full disclosure that I am not generally a fan of clubs unless they are professional ones. I have been to yacht clubs like this one where guests treated the staff as if they worked exclusively to satisfy their needs (demands?). From my experience here as a guest I have been impressed with the down-to-earth, caring staff and members who didn't seem to be there merely in order to be seen. The food at lunch is tasty. The club sandwich was so big that half each was more than enough. I really liked the random, home made look of the turkey instead of that bleached-white chicken or turkey in razor thin slices that is often used. The lobster bisque was tasty with juicy, not mushy pieces of seafood. The dessert choices could be more creative but that's a minor quibble. If you are lucky enough to be here on a clear day, the view is fantastic and it's a great place to dream. And maybe drink Moet et Chandon as the people sitting next to us were.
