Yachtsman Steakhouse vs. Le Cellier vs. Shula's Steakhouse

This is a tough one in my book. Le Cellier is a favorite, of course (mostly for their burger with that amazing cheddar cheese), but I just think Yachtsman has better steak (and usually great service). I've never been to Shula's, so I'd love to hear any insights there.

Hi, everyone!

I've never been to Yachtsman's Steakhouse but have eaten in the other two. I don't think you need to guess which is my favorite, but I also enjoyed my meal in Shula's on December 4, 2005.

I stayed in the Wilderness Lodge on that trip, and had a 6:30 pm reservation at the former Baltimore Colt and Miami Dolphin head coach's namesake restaurant, which I got through Disney Dining. I had resolved to tackle the 48-ounce porterhouse on that Sunday.

I ate breakfast that day at Roaring Forks but except for an occasional bottle of water, I ate nothing else. After a leisurely day in Magic Kingdom I went back to Room 1132 to rest. I left at 4:30 pm but in hindsight should have left at 4:00 pm as it was an MVMCP night. I took a boat to MK and then waited a long time at the bus depot for a Swan/Dolphin-bound bus. It finally came, and I got on.

I was fifteen minutes late for the reservation but the woman at the podium said it was OK. I was seated at 6:50 near the back of the restaurant. Shula's, named after legendary coach Don Shula, is a tribute to the 1972-73 Miami Dolphins who posted the only perfect (17-0) season in NFL history. The significance was not lost on me that the Orlando member of the chain is located in a building known as the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel, nor that the last four digits of my reservation number were 7372. These were good omens.

I was dressed in a baby-blue dress shirt, navy slacks, and sneakers, and thought I was slumming it. Dark wood paneling, subdued lighting and dark drapery gave this place the air of a "gentleman's club" without the strippers. In a tradition that's a bit over the top, a waiter brought out a football on a kicking tee, the football having printed on it the meat entrees without the prices. The waiter also described specials of the day and provided a more conventional menu with prices. This is obviously a place where the prevailing attitude seems to be, "If you need to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it."

I ordered the lobster bisque soup, the twice-baked potato, the 48-oz porterhouse and a bottle of Darjeeling tea to wash it all down, all a la carte. For any who don't know, a porterhouse, generally the largest and most expensive steak on the menu, consists of a filet mignon and a ribeye on a T-bone.

I ate the lobster bisque, which was very good; and sipped at my tea while awaiting my steak. While not as big as the Big Texan, a 72-oz steak served in a restaurant in Amarillo, TX and featured in an episode of Travel Channel's "Man vs. Food", Shula's famous signature item was very thick and came on a large plate bearing the words, "Shula's Steakhouse. Still Undefeated".

It was an excellent steak, very juicy, tender and delicious. I consumed it slowly and after 35 minutes was gnawing at the bone. I had room for only two bites of the potato. When the waiter came by, I asked him, "Is this considered finished?" He replied, "Yes. Congratulations". He then presented me with the check. The steak itself was $75.00 ($1.56 an ounce). The other items brought the total food bill, with tax, to $102.09. I added a 15% tip of $15.32 to charge the most expensive dinner (for one person) that I've ever had. It was worth every penny.

After being given a photo signed by Don Shula of him being carried on the shoulders of his players after registering his 300th win, which came at the Vet in Philly against the Eagles; and surprised that I could stand up after consuming such a large steak, I followed the waiter to a back room where a plaque with my name (James Townsend) is hung.

I then left the restaurant under my own power, took a Friendship Boat to Epcot, walked through Epcot to the bus depot, and caught a bus to Wilderness Lodge, all the while thinking, "I can't believe I ate the whole thing!"

One very obvious difference between Yachtsman and Le Cellier is that it's REALLY hard to get an ADR at Le Cellier, while Yachtsman is one of the easier ones.

I'd also say Yachtsman costs a bit more than Le Cellier. Neither one is cheap. Le Cellier is also only one dinner on the meal plan, while Yachtsman is two, if I'm not mistaken.

I think that's why Le Cellier is always so busy. They should really make it "two meals" in order to make it possible to get a table there (and to make more money.) Of course they're Canadians, so they probably are too nice to do it.

As long as it's a good steak, I'm there! But I do like that both Yachtsman and Le Cellier now have mushroom risotto -- mmmmm!

Most likely, you had arrived just before a big dinner rush.

I'd like to hear how you like it if you're ever able to try the restaurant!

mrhub, we will still be there till the 31st of Jan. so when you get there wear those big white Mickey hands so that when we see you we can say HI !! Sounds good VL! Maybe we could meet up and throw back a cold one, although mine would probably be a Manhattan! At least get a photo together for the boards!

Normally it takes exactly 24 hours?

Normally it takes exactly 24 hours? No Admin, its only about a 16 hour drive from here, We usually leave on a Saturday morning , drive till about 8pm, get a hotel and head out first thing Sunday morning and get into WDW anywhere from 1 to 3 in the afternoon. This time we are leaving a day early so we can have a pretty full day in the parks on Sunday. Hoping to get in to WDW by 10am. If the rooms are not ready we'll just leave the bags in the trunk and head in.

dsoup wrote: mrhub wrote: Me! 17 days 15 minutes till we leave and 18 days and 15 hrs (give or take ) till we get there!

Ah, do you try to arrive around that time so the rooms will be ready?

No thats just time we usually come rolling in on Sunday. If we could get there sooner, you can bet we would be there to get a full day in the parks. We have never showed up and a room not be ready.

We usually fly in on the earliest flight, check in, then leave the bags with bell services and head off to the parks!

La Cellier vs. Yachtsman vs. Shula's

I’m going to WDW for my birthday! As a treat while we’re there, we got help with the kids and my wife wants to take me out to dinner. I want the best possible steak on property. Atmosphere matters a tiny bit. Quality of side items matters a tiny bit. Quality of bourbon selection matters a tiny bit. But mainly, I want the best possible steak I can put in my mouth. I mention the three in my headline but I’m wide open to other suggestions as well. Thanks!

There are many opinions on this, and what makes a “best” steak is highly subjective… Of the three I’ve only been to Le Cellier, and have had very good steaks there. There seems to be a 50/50 split on whether people like Yachtsman or Le Cel better. There have been some who have very vocally said that Shula’s is the best steak on property, but I typically don’t go to “chain” restaurants when I’m at WDW. I don’t “know”, but I’m guessing Shula’s would have the best bourbon selection. Le Cellier is fairly small, low ceilings, kind of dark, and the most likely to have lots of kids. Shula’s is somewhat "formal’ with dark wood and white table cloths, but all of the wall art is football pictures. Yachtsman is a bit more contemporary and “casual” elegant; lighter wood, more windows, etc.

I will add that I have had excellent steaks at California Grill and Jiko as well, either of which I would go to again before I went back to Le Cellier. On the flip side, the one steak dinner I had at the Boathouse in DS was disappointing on virtually all counts.

I’m like you and am a steak man. Fillet steak for me every time

We’ve had two ten/eleven night hols to disney/universal in the last 5 years

We always stay near epcot on the disney part of our holiday as we love dining out at night and it offers the best options.

So I’ve eaten steak at le celier twice.

It’s good but although Canada and Epcot are a a great location I find the restaurant to be a bit boring inside. No views and packed tables almost basement like. This wouldn’t be my choice.

In Epcot Monsieur Paul in France is better it’s on a second floor with firework views and it’s a great experience and steak as good if not better than le celier

At this stage I will also say the steak in Tiffins in Animal Kingdom is great and that’s an awesome restaurant full stop. Close to pandoras world as well

Also we had a great steak at Palm in hard rock hotel universal which also does great lobster.

But im guessing from your 3 choices you are staying in or near epcot that night?

If so then I can honestly say having had fine dining most nights we’ve been in Orlando on both holidays without doubt Hollywood Brown Derby in Hollywood studios was the best steak both times

This place is great for atmosphere as well. I thoroughly recommend it.

But it’s important to request a booth table to experience a meal and situation like the Hollywood Legends would have experienced at the original Brown Derby restaurant

That’s my recommendation with Monsieur Paul a very good alternative.

Good luck and enjoy wherever you finally decide

We’ve not tried the yacht club or shulas yet but I do hope to try shulas at some stage but we prefer being in the parks at night tbh

That’s interesting about Boathouse because I’ve heard rave reviews. Was your experience soured because of poor food quality or was it more a service issue?

Thanks for the feedback!

I LOVE HBD but I’ve only ever had the wagyu beef burger there. Good tip, thank you!!

I think Monsiuer Paul is one of the most underrated restaurants in WDW. IMHO it and Jiko have the best food in WDW, outside of V&A. I didn’t include it in my discussion because I have never had the steak there. But if the steak is as good as the other food I’ve had there, it would be near the top of my list.

The service was excellent - probably the highlight of the dining experience. Part of the issue is the expense. It’s expensive even for a Disney signature. My ($8.00) salad was fairly tasty, but very small. The Filet, although cooked rare the way I like it, was lacking in taste and was quite dry. And it came with nothing else of the plate except a small dish of steak sauce (tasty, if you like sauce on your steak). The oven roasted potatoes ($8.00) were the highlight of the meal; perfectly cooked and a HUGE portion; easily enough for 2 or 3.Another part of the problem may have been my table. I was in the bar area, near the entrance, and it was very noisy. In addition to the noise of the restaurant, I had the noise of all of the people waiting for tables, 2 or 3 competing live music acts outside of the restaurant, plus the live music inside the restaurant. Oh, and a not very large domestic beer was $8.00. It wasn’t “bad”, but I’ve had better meals at any one of the other signatures, in a better environment, for less money.

I agree with this too; HBD has very good food, but I’ve never had a steak there. I have a very good steak house in my home town, so I don’t actually order a lot of steaks when I go to WDW; rarely more than once per trip.

Agree with comments regarding Boathouse. Trendy upscale nautical astmophere but pricey and LOUD. Even in the dining rooms away from the bar. Great service for just okay food. No fresh oyster in the world is worth $6+ a piece. It was one & done for hubby & I. I suggest you post this question on the chat. Lots of experienced eaters there. You’ll get more feedback.

Of the three on your list I’d say Shula’s probably has the best steak, closely followed by the Yachtsman. However, the Bull & Bear at the Waldorf Astoria Bonnet Creek blows them away. Superb.

I had lunch at Le Cellier and I found the food to be excellent. The fries were the most delicious fries I’ve ever had at any restaurant anywhere in the world. Ever.

But, as others have observed, it’s not the nicest restaurant physically.

I also had lunch at Tiffins and it was the best meal of my entire stay. Superb steak.

Although I have repeatedly panned California Grill, I didn’t have the steak there but I did see the steak and it looked great. Just make sure you demand – and get – a good table.

My son declares it his favorite restaurant at DS just because of the Parker House Rolls. I’ve had to put my foot down and tell him I’m not spending the money that Boathouse requires for rolls!

My favorite steak in Disney is at Yachtsman. And for more detail: I like my fillet mooing.

My qualifications aren’t strong but here is the baseline…favorite steak in DC @ Four Seasons’ Bourbon Steak, best “always great” @ The Palm, best “cook at home” is from Costco.

Looking into Bull and Bear. Supes expensive but looks AWESOME. Can anyone else recommend?

Haven’t had Tiffin’s. May have to add that to the candidate list. Heard great things!

Just looked at the Bull and Bear menu. Holy crap that’s expensive - and this from someone who eats signature most nights. With the really excellent choices elsewhere on property, I would not pay those prices just for the "treat’ of eating off-site at the Waldorf.

My family of 4 spent $330 at Shula's Steak House. Our meal was so great that I hope this small chain expands across the US.

  • My family of four had dinner at Shula's Steak House, a chain with a location at Disney World .
  • The delicious filet mignon, key-lime pie, and crème brûlée were highlights of the meal.
  • We enjoyed our $330 dinner, which included nonalcoholic drinks, appetizers, entrées, and desserts.

Insider Today

On a recent trip to Disney World , my family and I decided we'd try a new restaurant — Shula's Steak House.

The small chain was named one of the 10 best high-end steak-house chains in America by the Daily Meal, and has seven locations in Florida, Chicago, Houston, and Richmond, Virginia.

The steak house, which is owned by Shula's Restaurant Group, is named after former Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula. The chain aims to carry on Shula's legacy, so each location has a loose football theme.

Here's what our experience at Shula's Steak House was like.

The restaurant was busy when we arrived, but we were seated on time.

yachtsman steakhouse or shula's

Shula's Orlando location is inside the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel.

Our dinner reservation was at 7 p.m. on a Saturday, and Shula's was busy and vibrant without being overly crowded. When we arrived, we checked in at the host stand a few minutes early.

The dining room featured lots of football memorabilia, like black-and-white photos of players and wall art outlining the history of Don Shula's coaching career.

It felt like a traditional steak house, with white tablecloths and dark-wood walls, and reminded me of other places I've been to, like The Capital Grille .

Our meal began with complimentary bread and our choice of knives.

yachtsman steakhouse or shula's

The complimentary bread service included a large loaf of sourdough and a plate of room-temperature butter, perfect for spreading.

In addition to the delicious, tangy sourdough, the meal started with an event that was a steak-house first for us: choosing our knives.

Our server instructed us each to select a utensil from a knife block, which was a fun start to the meal that set the restaurant apart from others we've visited.

We kept our dinner alcohol-free, so I started with a mocktail.

yachtsman steakhouse or shula's

My husband and I are both cutting down on our alcohol consumption , so we stuck with nonalcoholic beverages. My husband and daughter drank water, and my son ordered a soda ($4.50).

I asked our server if the bar could make the restaurant's watermelon-mint mule without alcohol, and the staff accommodated my request. My $5 virgin mule was refreshing, with hints of ginger, watermelon, and mint.

We opted for the wedge salad for our first appetizer.

yachtsman steakhouse or shula's

To start the meal, we ordered Shula's $16 wedge salad, which was made with iceberg lettuce, bacon jam, tomatoes, and a blue-cheese dressing .

We loved the spicy bacon jam, which added an interesting flavor to the salad.

We also ordered a server-recommended appetizer: the thick-cut Nueske's bacon.

yachtsman steakhouse or shula's

Our server suggested we try the Nueske's bacon, so we ordered this dish as another appetizer. It was made with thick-cut bacon from the Nueske's Meats company.

The $22 appetizer was served on cheddar grits and came with a bourbon-honey glaze, cabbage-and-fennel slaw, and tomato jam.

The thick cuts of bacon were fall-apart tender and tasted like roasted pork belly. It paired well with the cheesy grits and crisp slaw and made for an impressive start to our meal.

My daughter ordered the baked Idaho potato and French onion soup, which she enjoyed.

yachtsman steakhouse or shula's

My daughter ordered French onion soup ($15) and a baked potato ($13) for her meal. However, by the time it arrived, she'd filled up on too many appetizers to try both dishes.

The baked potato came with butter, sour cream, shredded cheese, chives, and bacon pieces for topping. It looked like it had been cooked perfectly, and she was eager to have it for lunch the next day.

My daughter loved her French onion soup, which came with melted Gruyere and provolone cheese on top.

My filet mignon was tender and cooked perfectly.

yachtsman steakhouse or shula's

I ordered a 10-ounce filet mignon ($69) cooked to a medium-rare temperature.

The filet arrived warm and red in the center, with tasty, charred grill marks. I also ordered an au poivre sauce, which was an $8 upcharge. However, I didn't notice this extra charge on our final bill.

The sauce was creamy, peppery, and delicious when eaten with a bite of filet mignon.

My husband ordered a cowboy ribeye and added scallops.

yachtsman steakhouse or shula's

My husband ordered the 22-ounce cowboy ribeye ($76) and added two scallops to the dish for an additional $16.

At our server's suggestion, he ordered his ribeye cooked to a medium temperature to allow the fat in the steak to soften and caramelize. He liked his meal and felt adding the buttery scallops was worth it.

My son is a picky eater, so he ordered two cheeseburgers off the kid's menu.

yachtsman steakhouse or shula's

My son orders cheeseburgers nearly everywhere we go, so he asked to see the kid's menu.

Because he had a healthy appetite, he ordered two kid's patties ($9 each) stacked into a double cheeseburger.

He enjoyed the burger so much that he gobbled it down before I could snap a photo.

The crispy potato wedges came with tasty sauces.

yachtsman steakhouse or shula's

We also ordered the crispy potato wedges ($14), which we found to be perfectly cooked.

The real stars of this side were the delicious sauces — we received a garlic aioli and bravas sauce (made with tomato paste and paprika).

We love to order steak-house creamed spinach, and Shula's did not disappoint.

yachtsman steakhouse or shula's

The creamed spinach ($15), which had notes of Parmesan, garlic, and nutmeg, was pretty tasty.

The creamy side dish was the perfect balance of salty and cheesy and was made with savory spinach that tasted fresh.

Shula's key-lime pie was the perfect blend of tart and sweet.

yachtsman steakhouse or shula's

Our server recommended we try Shula's key-lime pie, so we decided to see if it lived up to his hype.

The $15 dessert was incredible — tart, sweet, and so good. We couldn't stop taking bites of it, even though we were full.

Crème brûlée is also a must-have for us, so we tried the one at Shula's.

yachtsman steakhouse or shula's

I never shy away from crème brûlée, so I had to order my favorite dessert.

The $14 dessert had a crackable sugar crust on top and tasty vanilla and cream flavors.

Our $330 meal at Shula's was really good, and I'd go back again when visiting Disney World.

yachtsman steakhouse or shula's

With tax, our dinner cost $330. It included nonalcoholic drinks, appetizers, entrées, side dishes, and desserts, which we felt was a good value.

Our meal was outstanding, and the atmosphere was relaxing yet elegant. Based on our experience at the Orlando Shula's, we'd return when visiting the park or head to another location if we were nearby.

I would go to Yachtsman's Steakhouse. DH and I used the free babysitting when we ate at Shula's. I don't think my kids would have enjoyed it there. I did take the boys to Yachtsman's and they loved it.

CamColt

We have dined at both and loved both. With kids, I would go for YSH.

Big steak eater here. In terms of steak quality alone, Shula's is the choice. Hands down.

We have only eaten at the YS and I can tell you from experience that everything was wonderful and delicious! The atmosphere is very relaxing and my 2 DSs also enjoyed themselves.

I want to encourage the OP (once again) to skip Shula's with children. The restaurant is VERY dark. You can barely see the food in front of you. There is NO kids menu and EVERYTHING is ala carte. In addition, they show you examples of the food that you can order, including the LIVE 2 lb Maine Lobster who is gasping in the air on a platter. If her kids can go to the Dolphin Club (or if they are much older) then I would suggest Shula's. Otherwise, the YSH is also quite good and embraces well behaved children.

My DH & DS9 ate at Shulas last week (while DD12 & I shopped in DTD) & they LOVED it! Keep in mind that the bill for just the 2 of them came to about $140.00 (before tip). DS9 is very well-behaved & a serious steak eater, so it worked out great for them.

We have eaten at both in the same trip with our three kids whom at the time were 5, 3, 2. Yachtsmen was our worst Diney dining experience EVER! The quality of the food, the service, everything horrible. We rarely complain, but complained big time over that deal. Shulas was an unexpected surpirise. We were looking for a good dinner. A CM at BC recommended it. We LOVED it! The food was amazing! THe kids were very well looked after. Yes they don't have a children's menu, but They suggested ordering one entree and then dividing amongst three plates. I expected it to come out on one plate and then divide it myself, the kitchen however, was kind enough to seperate and and arrange it beautifully on 3 seperate plates. The wait staff was wonderful with my kids and very attentive to them. We were in there almost three hours enjoying a wonderful night out and dinner as a family. It' s not for everyone though. We take our kids with us to nice restaurants so they are use to that atmosphere and we steer clear of typical child fare items, like hotdogs and such. When we are at a nice restaurant, we all order something nice. So they are use to beef, fish etc... Not all kids like that and in that case I would put them in the club and not miss the opporunity for such a great dinner!

disneykidz4

When I called to make our ADR the CM actually told me "most parents don't take their children to Shula's". I am assuming this was in regards to my question the "free" baby sitting. Then he suggested I make a family ADR at YSH and a couples ADR at Shula's. Also, he pointedly told me that they charge for sharing and that there are no kids meals. Also, take a look at the menus (AllEarsNet.com). This might help you decide. Shula's is a bit pricey for a family.

  1. Shula's vs. Yachtsman vs ...?

The consensus was Yachtsman Steakhouse, Jiko, and California Grill. However, the restaurant Shula's was a name that kept appearing throughout the thread. So I wanted to ask if you guys preferred Shula's Steakhouse or Yachtsman's Steakhouse, or some other high profile restaurant in WDW. Thanks!

  4. Yachtsman Steakhouse or Shula's?

I have tried both places Shula's (WDW and NYC) and Yachtsman Steakhouse. I think that Shula's all around is absolutely top notch from the service, decor, food, etc. The surf and turf (2lb lobster actually half of 4lb they cut down middle, and filet mignon) was absolutely the best I have ever had. The steaks are extremely tender, although filet ...

  5. Steak Lovers: Yachtsman Steakhouse vs Shula´s.

Shula's serves "certified angus brand". They claim their beef exceeds prime standards in 7 out of the 8 criteria and exceeds choice in the 8th. What that really means is their steaks aren't prime, because they're sub-prime in at least one qualifying standards. The steaks are better then good but they're not Prime.

  9. Yachtsman or Shula's?

Jul 28, 2021. #9. Shula's is way better food (I think its also more expensive). Yachtsmans "theme" isn't worth the bother. Although frankly, steak on Disney property is never great (from the perspective of someone who has had steak in places like Oklahoma City and Omaha).

  10. Yachtsman Steakhouse vs. Le Cellier vs. Shula's Steakhouse

I've never been to Yachtsman's Steakhouse but have eaten in the other two. I don't think you need to guess which is my favorite, but I also enjoyed my meal in Shula's on December 4, 2005. I stayed in the Wilderness Lodge on that trip, and had a 6:30 pm reservation at the former Baltimore Colt and Miami Dolphin head coach's namesake restaurant ...

  13. La Cellier vs. Yachtsman vs. Shula's

Le Cellier is fairly small, low ceilings, kind of dark, and the most likely to have lots of kids. Shula's is somewhat "formal' with dark wood and white table cloths, but all of the wall art is football pictures. Yachtsman is a bit more contemporary and "casual" elegant; lighter wood, more windows, etc.

7 years ago. Shulas would be my choice. Le Cellier steaks are not particularly high quality and the Yachtsman can be noisy. 16. Shula's steakhouse or Yachtsman? : r/WaltDisneyWorld

Shula's is stuffier, al a carte, and more expensive. Not sure I can say it's better since people have mixed experiences at both. Shula's probably edges Yatchsman out a bit on service. But then again, Yatchsman's probably isn't something you'd write home about either. Funny story.
