This beautiful 40’ center cockpit Endeavour sailboat, which is equipped for distance cruising or a comfortable live-aboard lifestyle, is up for sale. It has been meticulously maintained by the previous owners and ourselves. We are currently the 3rd owners and spent the last year sailing down the Eastern Coast.

It is currently sitting in storage in Florida, ready to set sail to the Bahamas and beyond. Unfortunately, health issues are forcing us to sell her.

Endeavor 40 - Opinions?

endeavour 40 sailboat data

  • Add to quote

Hi all, I am considering trading up to a bluewater-capable boat. My C36 is capable of a lot, but having my family in it way off shore is not my idea of being able to relax. What are you opinions of the Endeavor 40 (link below)? I know they are well made and fairly fast. Any owners out there willing to weigh in? 1984 Endeavour Sloop Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com Thanks, Bill

endeavour 40 sailboat data

We had an Endeavour 40 in our family in the 1980's. I would not consider these a particularly good offshore design or all that well constructed for that matter. These boats were designed to be value-oriented charter boats. They were reasonably nicely finished but the workmanship on structural areas and their deck hardware was really pretty poor. They are fine boats if all you are doing us island hopping in the Bahamas or Caribbean, or as a live aboard, and the like, but I would not want to weather an offshore storm in one. My concerns, besides for equipage and build quality issues, these boats had a miserable motion. I will note that my family owned the E-40 nearly 30 years ago and like any boat this age, many of the build quality issues may have been upgraded or repaired by intervening owners. Hopefully, Sailorgirl will weigh in since she has one as well. Jeff

Bill, I have sailed both. I actually think your C36 is a faster boat and way more nible. Not sure what the asking price is but there are better blue water boats in that size out there. We are looking for the same right now. We like the Bristol and Mason designs. Dave

Dave, I looked at a Mason 44 that lies in Ventura Harbor. OMG!!!! What a beautiful boat! About a 9.5out of 10. I don't remember the year, but the price was very high ($217 K). If I really wanted it I would start at $150. Those are a whole different level of build quality. Cheers, Bill

endeavour 40 sailboat data

Not a knock on Endeavours, necessarily, but I don't see the step up to 'bluewater' in the C36 to E40 transition....

Hi all, Well, I finally went and looked at the Endeavour (see above), despite the less than enthusiastic reviews in this post. The boat is pretty heavily constructed, certainly much more than my C36. The current owner cruised it for many years without issue. As with any older boat, it will need some upgrades such as nav equipment, standing and running rigging, but is in very good shape otherwise. I have read about issues with the water and fuel tanks in the bilge, but there is in sign of trouble with this one. The Perkins engine has about 5000 hours, so that might be an issue at some point. Naturally, if I decided to pursue this, a full survey would take place. Anyway, it is another boat to give me something to think about. Cheers, Bill

Endeavour 40 Kth

Endeavour 40 Kth is a 39 ′ 11 ″ / 12.2 m monohull sailboat built by Endeavour Yacht Corp. starting in 1981.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Dimensions for ketch rig. See ENDEAVOUR 40 for more details.

Boat: Endeavour 42
. For its mission it is a good design. But it's a production boat-built in a very competitive in 1980's Clearwater/St. Pete. So don't expect high-end type construction. It has flaws like most other boats, but they are correctable w/out blowing your entire cruising kitty. Top of the list:fuel and water in the , plastic , water damage to otherwise beautiful . Most of these boats are getting age on them so they often need extensive upgrading-unless you can find one that's already been redone. Overall, I still love my E-40 and plan to take it back to the Carribbean for a few year . I would'nt hesitate to cross an ocean in it but I wouldn't recommend taking it around the Horn. Pm me if you have any questions. Cptn happy

of the world from 2005 to 2012 on our 1982 40 . We sailed that boat through all types of suffering a full on knockdown in the and even a whale strike off the coast of . In all, the boat managed to sail 38,000 miles across the pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans (it even survived going under Cape Agulhas, South Africa). In the end, I would say they are rather tough boats that I believe are 'underrated'. Plus, Don Johnson lived on one in the first season of Vice!

, Dolcenea. I crossed the Atlantic last summer, from to the Loire river in . My boat is still there, in a boatyard. I am asking a "Boat Passeport" from French , in order to be able to stay and sail in the area for the coming months. French are asking the plans (including cross sections with all possible details) and technical characteristics (materials, etc) of the boat as part of that "passeport" process.

Any one would have things of that sort yet more detailed than what we usually find on ?

ACCOMMODATIONS

  • Layout: 2 Cabin, 2 Head Center Cockpit Sloop
  • The interior of the Endeavour 40 is built up of wood. First, a framework of floor timbers is constructed and placed in the bilge and heavily bonded in place with woven roving. A plywood sole is glued and screwed on top of these floor timbers and bonded to the hull all around its periphery with woven roving.
  • All timbers and plywood are saturated with polyester resin before assembly to seal all exposed wood. All bulkheads are bonded to the hull with two layers of woven roving on both sides.
  • The interior is finished with varnished teak with soft white overheads. The cabin sole is teak parquet flooring, bonded in place with a waterproof adhesive.
  • The interior layout is typical with a V-berth forward, the head (to starboard) and lockers (to port) which divide it from the main salon area which has a fold-up dining table with port and starboard settees. Aft and to starboard is a nav station with the electrical panel and to port is the galley with refrigeration, a gimbaled 3-burner gas stove with oven.
  • The engine area is insulated and can be accessed via the starboard hallway or underneath stairs. The private owner's stateroom aft has a queen size berth, hanging lockers, chest of drawers, and a private head with shower. Mattress replaced with memory foam in 2021.
  • There are 14 opening ports (Beckson) and 4 large Atkins-Hoyle deck hatches (strong drop forged aluminum with 3/4" Lexan), one each over the v-berth and aft cabin and 2 over the salon area.
