How Tennessee football added offensive wrinkle with Mike Matthews before Oklahoma showdown

Mike Matthews started with Bru McCoy and Squirrel White on one side of the Tennessee football offense.

The freshman wide receiver went in motion to the opposite side, joining Chas Nimrod as coach Josh Heupel threw another offensive possibility onto the field against Kent State.

"We were able to use our four-wide package now with him being healthy," Heupel said Saturday.

The Vols flexed a "12 personnel" look in their 51-10 win against NC State on Sept. 7 with one running back and two tight ends. Tennessee established the four-wide set as another development in its 71-0 win against Kent State, widening the options within its already potent offense as the No. 7 Vols (3-0) barrel into SEC play and a conference opener at No. 13 Oklahoma (3-0) on Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET, ABC).

Heupel and the Vols have much made of the increased depth on the roster in the coach's fourth season. One way that is showing up in expanded offensive sets.

"With our roster now, you have the ability to go into a four-wide set and go play really, really good football in it," Heupel said Monday.

Tennessee didn't have such options last season. Heupel explained that the Vols had six available scholarship wide receivers in 2023 as Nathan Leacock and Nathan Spillman were redshirting. That number dropped when Bru McCoy and Dont'e Thornton suffered season-ending injuries. Thornton had played out of position at slot receiver to fill a need. Dee Williams wound up playing wide receiver sparingly.

That isn't a problem now. UT has 10 scholarship wide receivers, including freshman Braylon Staley who could redshirt.

It also has multiple slot receiver options with White and Matthews leading the way, which led to the four-wide set with two slot receivers in that duo along with McCoy and Nimrod on the outside.

“Depth in your personal gives you the freedom and luxury to do more things," Heupel said. "That can be within our scheme but certainly within our personnel groupings, too."

Matthews lined up behind Nimrod on one side of the offense with White set up behind McCoy on the other against Kent State. The five-star freshman ducked behind the line of scrimmage as Nimrod got ready to block on the second play in the four-wide structure.

Matthews caught a screen pass from quarterback Nico Iamaleava, skirted a pair of tackle attempts and scampered for a 17-yard gain early in the first quarter.

"Mike is the guy that we’ve had great trust through spring ball," Heupel said Saturday.

The Vols stuck with the four-wide set for two more plays, which led to a 28-yard pass to Nimrod and a run from Dylan Sampson before UT went away from the four-wide look.

Matthews, who was injured during preseason practices, hauled in an 18-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter. He finished with two catches for 35 yards in his 17 snaps.

"It was good to have him out there and make plays," Heupel said. "He handled himself within the flow of the game extremely well. Really excited about what he did."

Fully restored from 2008-2012 by the best boatwrights in Seattle. Immaculate. Updated electronics. Recent hull survey shows bronze fasteners like new. Present owner of 17 years. Moored in Seattle in covered fresh water moorage since 2004. Extremely sea worthy. GRETA combines the unmistakable mid-50s vintage lines of a classic motoryacht with a completely updated list of equipment, electronics, and creature comforts that rival any other recreational cruiser today. No need to update or restore anything. It has all been done for you! Under her present owner, GRETA emerged from a complete restoration process 8 years ago, during which all systems were upgraded. Powered by twin Crusader 454 carburated gas engines with approximately 1,200 hours, she comfortably cruises at 8-10 knots (8 GPH with a range of 325 miles) and can reach a top speed of 20 knots. She has undergone a complete rewire, while every interior and exterior surface has been stripped, sanded, and painted. Varnished surfaces average around 5 coats. All bronze fittings have been rechromed. A 2021 hull survey (available upon request) showed only minor recommendations, which were immediately taken care of by the owner. Established in 1890, The Matthews Boat Company represented the peak of recreational cruiser design in the mid-nineteen fifties with dealerships located throughout the U.S. With the introduction of her 'convertible' option, the salon doors open fully onto the cockpit, offering 20' of living space and eliminating that closed-in feeling inherent with a single door entry. During her recent refit, the narrow companionway between the salon and the dinette/galley has been removed for a brighter, more spacious experience. In addition, her reconfigured flybridge now seats 6, and a custom aluminum alloy mast is hinged to permit 13'6" clearance in covered moorage. The new mast accommodates updated radar, chart plotter, depth sounder, GPS, KVH TV dome and hailer. This fully restored example of a siganture mid-50s cruiser design attracts onlookers wherever she cruises. First of all, Matthews has 2 "t"s I am the owner of a fiberglass 46 Matthews, the motor yacht which was displayed and debuted at the 1970 Miami Boat Show. Former owner of complete restoration 1959 42' Double Cabin (wood). They are wonderful yachts!

The aft deck was enlarged when the wing doors were added in the slightly more forward location. (See profile pics) Some surgery was required, but the result was excellent.

The original woodwork in the saloon was painted out many years ago and had been repainted many colors prior to the off white that I inherited. I took the color back to a "woody" tan color which seems to work well.

SeaEric, that is a major transformation in the master room from the pink to what it is now... I almost did not recognise that it is the same room. You did great work there and throughout the yacht. BTW, I love those pineapple throws in the saloon and the aft region.

I don't know if the spirit of past lives can see into the digital world, but I'd bet Scott Matthews is looking down and smiling. Nice work Eric!

I have sold my 46 Matthews. She is on to a new home and I am on to a new project! Stay tuned.

Found a 53 Matthews at Yank Boat Yard in Tuckahoe NJ. She is available cheap. Boat went into yard about five years ago to have some minor maintenance performed. Owners got divorced and boat sat. Wife received the boat in the settlement. Yard owner says he will forgive most of the yard fees if someone wants to save her however not much time is left before she gets cut up. I would take her if I wasn't already in the middle of a refit. She is complete and the yard owner states the engines turn over. There is water infiltration in the bow deck and beginning to show rot through the upper hull. I tried to upload photos but the site says the file is to large. If any one is interested email me

I owned a 1946 34ft Matthews and repowered her with 4-236 Perkins. Completely rebuilt her bottom, new tankage and cruised the Caribbean for six years, criss-crossing the the islands and covering 35,000 miles with her. Kept her Port Salerno, Florida for a number of years and finally donated her to the Chapman's School in Palm City. Anyone know what happened to her?

Hello Gerry, Welcome to YachtForums. I have never seen a 34 Matthews in person. Only in photos. The 34 would be, I think, a wonderful boat for the type of cruising that you did. How long ago did you donate her? If she was documented, do you happen to know the doc#?

34 ft Matthews I bought the boat in 1968. She was registered with Florida and I kept her that way. She was named the "Fantasy" and I changed her name to the "Willing Slave" I donated her to Chapman's School around 1979 or 80.

Willing Slave Thanks for the info on the Huckins. I had forgotten her name. The crew was reclusive whike we were there, and we never saw the owners. We stayed at Puerto Platta for about a week before heading down to the Virgins. When we returned a month later - enroute to Haiti - the Bright Hour was gone.
