Bayliss Boatworks

Located in North Carolina on the U.S. Atlantic Coast, Bayliss Boatworks is the epitome of a Carolina luxury sportfishing yacht builder. Bayliss offers custom, cold-moulded wood sportfishing yachts up to 27.4 metres in length, built by hand with strict attention to detail.

A highly successful offshore tournament angler, John Bayliss found a berth as a mate on a charter sportfishing boat out of Hatteras Village, North Carolina, in 1975 and made captain within five years. He got his start in the yacht-building industry in 1997, when local shipyard Hatteras Yachts hired him to captain its demo boat, Hatterascal. In 2002, he opened his own shipyard, Bayliss Boatworks, in Wanchese, N.C.

Notable Yachts

In 2010, Bayliss launched the 20.72-metre custom sportfishing yacht Uno Mas . The yacht, which features naval architecture by Robert Ullberg, a longtime collaborator with the shipyard, was heralded as a next-generation sportfisher.

Bayliss Boatworks’ current flagship, the 25.6-metre luxury sportfisher Orion , was delivered in 2013. Also incorporating naval architecture by Robert Ullberg, she runs an impressive 42 knots at maximum speed.

At this writing, the shipyard had a 27.4-metre custom sportfishing superyacht in production, Singularis .

60 Each boat produced is custom made to fit the customers’ needs so all 60 models are severely different. The interior of the 60 features 3 staterooms and 2 heads coming up and moving back to a galley and L shape couch in the salon. The flybridge gives a great view of surrounding as this boat slices through large seas with ease.

73 The 73 model is a large fishing machine. This boat offers top notch performance and extraordinary amenities around. The yachts weighs just under 100,000 pounds and crushes rough seas while going 40 knots. Down below the enclosure offers 4 staterooms and 3 heads. The exterior setup is a dream with the innovative flybridge and 20-foot beam. This is a comfortable riding boat that is one of the driest in the class.

90 The 90 model is the largest ever built by Bayliss. The large windows and beautiful lines of the yacht are a pure work of art. The attention to detail throughout on such a large vessel is stunning. The teak everywhere is a true masterpiece while the fishability is still game changing including an outstanding setup at the flybridge. What type of yacht is best for fishing?

Convertible Sportfish Yachts are typically 50ft or more with enclosed living area on the main deck and a flybridge with hard top or fully enclosed, in addition to accommodations below deck, and a large cockpit with a mezzanine deck with seating for guests to watch and enjoy the action. These yachts are often a custom build that combines the luxurious amenities of a motor yacht with the proven performance hull of a sportfisher, capable of converting to a cruising yacht, if desired. They will usually have a tower for spotting gamefish and utilize the latest technological advantages and fish-finding electronics, such as Furuno’s real-time 360-degree sonar systems, Seakeeper stabilizers, pod drives, powerful diesel engines and gensets, and much more. Convertible Sportfishers are evaluated on their seakeeping ability, stability and efficiency in speed and economy. Handling and performance underway or in fishing mode are vital, as they must be able to handle all types of conditions; many have redundant systems. How much does a Sportfishing Yacht cost?

How much are you willing to spend? There are too many variables with the vast array of manufacturers and builders of Sportfishing Yachts to put a single price out there. Currently the average cost to purchase a Sportfishing Yacht over 40ft in the Southeast Region of the United States is about $815,500. Sportfishing yachts tend to cost more than a cruising motor yacht of the same length because of the additional specialized equipment, electronics, and build features, especially for a custom sportfish. How much does a 50ft fishing boat cost?

Currently a used 2005 Ocean Yachts 50ft Super Sport is listed at $395,000 in the Florida east coast market, which is about average in the current brokerage market. Current (Aug. 2021) range in the yachting industry’s MLS is $600,000 for a 2000 Viking 50 Convertible Sport Fisher in California to a 1991 Ocean Yachts 50ft Super Sport located in Italy at $199,420. Of course, a new production or custom-built fishing boat will be much more.

What is the largest fishing yacht?

According to The Robb Report and Yachts International, the new 171ft Royal Huisman Sportfish Superyacht will be the world’s largest true sportfish yacht when it is launched. Currently under construction, the yacht will be equipped for the global pursuit of trophy gamefish such as swordfish and marlin that roam the world’s oceans, and a range of sportfishing options. Sportfishing has attracted new owners for the larger boats in recent decades and yachts with tall towers and outriggers dominate the world’s fishing grounds in South and Central America, the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Rim and New Zealand.
