NAHLIN – CLASSIC MOTOR YACHT
In the summer of 2010 Nahlin steamed into Dartmouth, the first time she had entered a British port under her own steam since leaving for Romania in 1937. This was the culmination of the largest classic yacht restoration project ever undertaken and G.L. Watson & Co. acted as Owners’ Representative, Design Authority, Exterior Designer, Yacht Manager and Interior Designer of Crew & Service Areas.
Beyond the five years of incredible work that preceded the well publicised return to British waters there had been a 15 year campaign to save this preeminent classic yacht in which G. L. Watson & Co. played a leading role.
In 1929 G.L. Watson & Co. was commissioned by the heiress Lady Yule to design a steam yacht that would permit her to “visit every part of the globe she desired”. Following in a line of acknowledged classics we produced a design which was at the pinnacle of the evolution of clipper bow and counter stern steam yachts.
Clyde-built
Clyde-built by John Brown & Co., Nahlin’s elegance was acclaimed in her day and, with her extraordinary survival to the 21st century, she remains the ultimate classic power-yacht. As John Brown & Company’s Hull Number 533, Nahlin immediately preceded Cunard’s iconic liner the Queen Mary . John Brown & Company were world leaders in shipbuilding and at the epicentre of maritime engineering. Along with the yard’s Queen Mary , QE II and Royal Yacht Britannia , Nahlin is an icon of engineering excellence.
Lady Yule recruited most of her crew from the Clyde and Western Isles of Scotland and their families’ historic photographs and memories, along with material from museums and archives of Clydebank and Glasgow, were invaluable in the restoration project.
Lady Yule (1930-1936)
Lady Yule was heiress to a considerable fortune, but in her own right she is known as one of the founders of the British film industry and was a major partner in Pinewood Studios along with J. Arthur Rank and John Corefield. An accomplished horsewoman she founded the Hanstead Stud Stables, endowed one of the first dedicated veterinary hospitals and several animal sanctuaries both in the UK and abroad.
Over the course of six years Lady Yule made several extended cruises, including a circumnavigation. In 1932 she wrote to Nahlin’s designer James Rennie Barnett, senior partner of G.L. Watson & Co., that Nahlin was “the most beautiful yacht in the world, and the most seaworthy”. In 1936 having seen “every corner of the globe she desired to visit”, Lady Yule eventually made Nahlin available for charter or sale.
The Royal Yacht (1936-1939)
As the premier British yacht of the day, King Edward VIII chartered Nahlin in August of 1936 for a private cruise. The presence of Wallis Simpson aboard attracted great media attention. These news reports also brought Nahlin to the attention of King Carol II of Romania who acquired her in 1937. Less than two years later, with the outbreak of war, King Carol quit his throne and Nahlin was left on the backwaters of the Danube. Ironically, this was to be Nahlin’s salvation. Unlike many pre-war yachts, Nahlin was neither requisitioned for the war effort, nor modernised in the post war era. Instead she survived largely unmodified.
RESCUE (1988-1999)
In 1988 William Collier, a young yachtsman with a passion for classic boats, had recently moved to the south of France and with the encouragement of broker Nicholas Edmiston he set about investigating Nahlin’s fate. Pre-revolution Romania was largely closed to visitors, but with the aid of a Student Visa and a fair amount of pluck, Collier discovered Nahlin operating as a floating restaurant on the banks of the Danube. She was in a perilous state but, despite neglect, Nahlin’s beauty shone through. Inspired by Collier’s photographs the pair set about her rescue. With the collapse of the Soviet block and the Romanian revolution the yacht was sold to a privatised company. Edmiston and Collier began the hard task of her purchase & repatriation. With the volatile post-communist political situation there was much frustration, but finally in 1999 Nahlin returned to British waters and today Nahlin is once again registered in her home port of Glasgow.
Stabilisation & Archiving (1999-2005)
In the years following her return to the UK, G.L. Watson & Co engaged in a comprehensive programme to stabilise her condition, document all surviving material and to prepare her for restoration. The ship was dry-docked and her hull comprehensively surveyed. Over 450 tons of debris and contaminants were removed. The surviving interior was surveyed, and CAD drawings produced of interior designs and panelling schemes. Casts were made to record delicate plaster mouldings and enrichments.
YACHT RESTORATION (2005-2010)
In the summer of 2010 Nahlin was re-commissioned following a total restoration under the supervision of the vessel’s original designers G.L. Watson & Co. The first phase of restoration work on the hull was carried out by Nobiskrug shipyard in Rendsburg with the subsequent engineering and fit-out at Blohm & Voss Repair GmbH in Hamburg. Participating in the project were firms from across the UK, Europe and beyond, including Scottish and Merseyside engineering companies who had supplied John Brown’s some eighty years ago. The standards achieved during this yacht restoration broke new ground in restoration quality and have revealed the original beauty of this acclaimed classic. The re-commissioning of Nahlin in the summer of 2010 brought the best possible conclusion to a twenty year plus campaign to save this preeminent classic yacht.

One of these images is likely what comes to mind when you hear the word "superyacht," a phrase generally used to describe a yacht over 80 feet in length. While ultra-luxurious vessels are associated with all things carefree, tragic events such as the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday is a reminder that yachting is a pastime with unique risks and nuances. It's unclear what the protocols were on the Bayesian. For those keen on the idea of chartering a superyacht, captain Kelly Gordon, 42, told Business Insider there are a number of important factors to consider before hopping on board. Gordon fell in love with yachting after she stepped aboard a yacht for the first time in her mid-20s. Hellbent on reaching captain level, Gordon quickly worked her way up the chain of command. She's spent most of her time sailing the Bahamas and the Caribbean and is now based in Florida, where she works as a captain on a 108-foot-long privately owned vessel. Gordon, who has over 12,600 followers on Instagram , shares three factors to keep in mind before boarding a chartered superyacht. Think of the process of chartering a superyacht as buying a houseOne of the most important things to do when chartering a superyacht is to work with a charter broker, Gordon says. "The charter manager's job is to No. 1: find you a safe boat," Gordon said, adding that in her experience, "Not all programs put safety as high up on the list as it should be." She also likes to equate charter brokers to Realtors in that they take on the role of finding you the best option for your taste. Related stories "You find one that you gel with really well and has a good reputation, and then you discuss with them what your budget is, where you want to go, what your activity levels are, what your personalities are like," Gordon said. Pairing clients with a crew that aligns with their characteristics is a huge part of a charter broker's job, Gordon said. "If you think about it, you're living with that crew for 24/7, around the clock," she said. "You're not going put someone that just wants to sit and read books all day with a crew that's extremely active." Find a crew that is competent and prioritizes safetyCharter brokers also help match clients with a competent crew that prioritizes safety. "I don't know that many people realize just how much their life is in our hands when we cast those lines and we go to sea," Gordon said. Part of that is having a safety briefing, which Gordon carries out every time she welcomes clients onto a chartered vessel before leaving a dock. A thorough safety briefing includes informing clients about the location of safety equipment and lifejackets and the procedures for events such as a fire, a person falling overboard, or the boat sinking. "You should have a safety briefing, and if you don't get one, you should ask for one," Gordon said. The process, she added, can be different on privately owned yachts, where passengers may be familiar with the vessel. The Bayesian is a private yacht owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch; it's not yet known what kind of safety protocols staff and guests were trained on. Make sure there's a member of the crew on watch 24/7"A lot of charter guests think when they go to sleep, the crew goes to sleep," Gordon said. But that shouldn't be the case, she added. "You want to be on a boat knowing that someone's up, because if the weather changes or the anchor starts to drag, you need somebody that's up and ready to go and get everybody else to handle it." Among the biggest weather risks are tornados, which can be extremely difficult to predict and prepare for whether you're on land or at sea. "I'm from the Midwest, where tornados pop up," Gordon said. "It's hard to see a tornado coming, and if you do see it coming, the tornado goes where it wants to go." Most often, that leaves people near the weather event with just minutes to ready themselves, which is even trickier "in the middle of the night." While rapid changes in weather are tough to contend with, Gordon recommends researching the areas you are sailing in beforehand, like you would when visiting a new country. "It's no different than if you're going on vacation on land," she said. "You want to know where you're going. Don't put that just all on the crew." While the research doesn't have to be as extensive as the crew should be doing, it's important to still be "responsible for your own self as well as your family and your guests." In 2013, “Below Deck,” introduced the masses to the most glamorous mode of traveling: yachting. Since then, it’s become a Bravo mainstay with Season 9 of “Below Deck Mediterranean’’ premiering in June. But how real is the reality show? I spent five nights on a yacht in Croatia to find out.  A tip on tippingMy suitcase wasn’t bursting with Benjamins. An agency at your final destination provides cash for the crew’s tip money. While you’re expected to tip $30,000 for a two-night cruise on “Below Deck,” in real life you only have to tip 10% to 15% of your charter fee. That’s about $10,000 for a two-night cruise on a 180-foot charter yacht like Mustique (from $250,000 a week), which stars in the new season. According to Zvonimir Androić, president of the yacht charter company Via Croatia, more often than not, the tip comes from what’s left over after provisioning. So, shun the Dom Pérignon and skip the beluga caviar, and you’ll have money to spare. What’s up, dock? In real life, “Below Deck’s” favorite commercial-break cliff-hanger isn’t nearly as dramatic. Docking in our yacht, Via Croatia’s five-cabin, 100-foot Adriatic Escape (from $52,800 a week), was breezy. I asked the crew if they hated setting up the slide — a tortuous, Herculean task if you believe what you see on TV. “It’s not that bad,” a twentysomething Croatian deckhand, as cute as his on-screen counterparts, told me. “That said, we’re definitely not sad if you don’t ask for it.” Play it cool Despite being served meat on more than one occasion, my vegetarian co-guests on board weren’t divas when it came to cuisine — a major source of chef-related stress on the show. Tantrums aren’t the norm Barbie Pascual, the “Below Deck” stewardess famous for putting up with former “RHONY” star Jill Zarin’s demands for the perfect Diet Coke in the “Real Housewives of Grenada” episode, tells me. “Guests know they are being filmed so their reactions are more extreme than they’d be if the cameras weren’t around,” she says. Pascual’s biggest tip for first-time yachters? Don’t go skinny dipping, like they do on the show, after dark. “People forget about currents, sharks, etc.,” she says. “Jumping in the water should always be with the captain’s consent!” Our humorless Croatian yacht captain was a far cry from “Below Deck Mediterranean’s” affable Captain Sandy Yawn. I think we only saw him twice over the course of four days, and he definitely didn’t join us for dinner. That was fine by us because the stews and deckhands were always handy with anything we needed — including at chat. Asking for it “No” is a word you’ll never hear on a yacht, unless there is a safety issue, Pascual says. While we didn’t ask our crew to do a striptease or decorate for ‘70s night (two recurring requests on the show), out-there demands aren’t out of the question, as long as you’re willing to pay for it. For example, Via Croatia is currently retrofitting one of its multimillion-dollar superyachts for an upcoming charter booked by a multigenerational Jewish family from Florida. “In addition to paying the charter fee, the client is literally buying everything new: pots, pans, silverware, et cetera,” said Androić. “They’re even spending $30,000 on a new tender for the elderly mother-in-law.” Now, I’m no reality show producer, but a picky primary trying to keep his wife, her elderly mom and their kosher kids happy at sea has the makings of an Emmy Award-winning episode. Yachting on a budget Charters are cheapest at the beginning and end of a destination’s season. Via Croatia’s yuppiest yacht, the 160-foot, 12-cabin Agape Rose , fetches $200,000 a week in July and August. But it’s just $164,000 a week in April and October. Divide that by 24 of your closest friends and family and it’s just $6,800 a person. If that’s still too much, consider booking a yacht club suite on one of MSC Cruises ’ Mediterranean voyages. Sure, you’ll be on a cruise liner, but for $1,659 a person you’ll be treated to seven nights of private butler service with a private pool and restaurant that the pleb passengers don’t even know exists. The chairman of Morgan Stanley International was reportedly among the six missing people—including UK tech mogul Michael Lynch— after the 184-foot luxury sailing yacht Bayesian sank in rough seas near Sicily early Monday morning, according to new reports. Lynch , a British tech entrepreneur and one-time billionaire, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch are confirmed to be among those still missing after the ship sank (his wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued). Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of the Morgan Stanley International bank and insurance company Hiscox, is also reportedly among the missing along with his wife, Judy. Authorities on Monday told the BBC the missing people are presumed to still be inside the boat, and rescue operations resumed Tuesday morning. The vessel had 22 people on board — 10 crew and 12 passengers — including people from the United States, Britain and Canada, when it overturned at around 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Italian coast guard. Fifteen people were rescued from the vessel (including a 1-year-old girl), one person was found dead and six, including two Americans , remain missing, according to multiple reports. Local media reported the person who died was a member of the crew, thought to be the yacht’s chef . Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far. Follow latest updates on the superyacht sinking  What might have caused the sinking? The British-flagged luxury vessel, named Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time on Monday morning off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic. It sank in as little as 60 seconds with 22 people on board, 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard. Waterspouts, essentially tornados that form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said.  The yacht may have sunk faster with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said. "I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said. Official pictures show air conditioning units in several of the rooms, however, which could counter the suggestion open windows caused the vessel to sink faster. The huge mast is also likely to have played a role, he added.  What are waterspouts? Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes. Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph.  They can travel at about 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht. Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming". "The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said. "Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call."  Who owns the yacht? The yacht belonged to the family of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch. He was confirmed to have died after rescuers found his body on Thursday. Mr Lynch was on holiday with his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who is still missing, and his wife Angela Bacares, who was rescued. Mr Lynch, 59, was known as the " British Bill Gates " and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.  In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges, which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP). The yacht trip is believed to have been a celebration of the end of Mr Lynch's legal troubles. HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant. Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. The passengers were largely British and American, with crew members were from New Zealand, South Africa, and Canada. Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012.  Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready. "Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA. The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency. Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo. Divers confirmed on Thursday that their bodies had been recovered. The yacht's captain James Cutfield survived, along with South African crew members Leah Randall and Katja Chicken.  Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, was the first to be found dead, the Italian Coastguard confirmed to Sky News. During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily.  What do we know about the vessel? The Bayesian is owned by a company controlled by Mr Lynch's wife. It was known for its unusual 72.3m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on.  It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020. It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites. The luxury vessel , which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, could accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites. It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites. Mr Schanck, of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications. He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK Maritime Coastguard Agency regulations before its voyage. It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites.
