Groundbreaking 40m zero-emission trimaran concept Domus unveiled

Rob Doyle Design and Van Geest Design have collaborated to present Domus, a 40 metre sailing trimaran with interior volume that rivals a 60 metre motor yacht.

With speed, space and eco-conscious cruising at the forefront of the design, Domus aims to become the first truly zero-emission yacht over 750 gross tonnes.

“The uniquely designed combination of solar power, hydro-regeneration technology and hydrogen fuel cells gives Domus unlimited range with zero emissions,” the design team said.

“An optimised system of solar power and battery storage allows the yacht to motor during daylight hours and then transfer over to the battery system at night. This also means that Domus is fully silent with zero emissions while at anchor.”

Alongside veritable eco-credentials, Domus has been designed with performance in mind. To reduce drag and improve speeds, it will be able to heel at an angle of two degrees. This will also ensure a comfortable cruise with minimal rolling.

The yacht’s interior space covers 783 square metres split between two decks. There are six guest cabins in total, with four VIPs and two sizeable owner’s suites each equipped with their own lounge area.

Amenities include a cinema room, gym and saloon with a bar. Domus also hosts a spa area with a swimming pool.

The word Domus means a single-storey house built around an atrium, with many rooms opening up off the central atrium. The yacht borrows aspects of this design to create a lofty, open feeling on board.

Working together on the project, Rob Doyle and Van Geest Design have done extensive research into the practicalities and safety elements associated with trimarans. “We strongly believe if you want the benefits of multihulls at a 40-metre-plus size the only practical solution is a trimaran," the design team added.

“Just because superyachts are what they are now, does not mean they should stay this way. We were constantly looking at every aspect of the design and saying, 'is there a better way'? We truly believe that this project will redefine what a multi-hull sailing superyacht can be."

Alongside the 40 metre concept, the design duo are working on a larger version of the concept for a shipyard.

Domus, a zero-emission superyacht trimaran for a life on one level

domus trimaran interior

Domus is a concept of luxury trimaran with a length of 40 m designed for performance and life on one level. Very wide, it is comfortable and efficient, but above all "clean", at least in its use.

Chloé Torterat

A trimaran with a very important beam master

"Domus is a single-story house built around a courtyard known as an atrium, with no roof, and access to several rooms. Domus were found to have many living areas, including a kitchen, bathroom, dining room and bedrooms."

It is therefore to recall this beautiful house of Roman antiquity that designers Pieter van Geest and Rob Doyl have conceived the Domus concept. It is a 40-meter superyacht trimaran with a very large 35-meter beam that allows for a single level layout, comparable in surface area to an 80-meter monohull, according to the design duo.

"Wide trimarans have proven to be faster than catamarans of the same size. This is the case in offshore/inshore races around the world and notably in 2010 with the victory of BMW Oracle (a 27m trimaran) over Alinghi (a 27m catamaran)" begin the two designers.

"We believe that from 40m upwards, if you want to enjoy the benefits of a multihull, the only practical solution is a trimaran. The research undertaken on multihull superyacht sizes between 80/90m and 40/50m clearly proves this." continue the designers.

Le concept de trimaran Domus

A central hull dedicated to on-board systems

Without going into too much detail, Domus can sail on two hulls, with a rather reduced heel angle of 2°. This configuration allows the trimarans to reduce drag and therefore be faster in comparison to a catamaran sailing on its two hulls. All the systems and engineering are in the central hull and not in the two floats. Finally, the rigging forces are also taken on the central hull, which simplifies the arm structures and makes the overall structure simpler.

Le concept de trimaran Domus

Zero emission navigation

Domus combines solar panels , hydrogenerators and a hydrogen fuel cell for an announced unlimited autonomy with zero emissions. This optimized solar energy management system allows the boat to run on batteries at night for silent and clean moorings.

Le concept de trimaran Domus

A living space on one level

The very large interior space is mainly distributed on one level, without steps. All spaces have a view to the outside. The central hull houses the onboard systems. As mentioned, it carries all the rig loads and serves as the main service area (galley, laundry, crew quarters) and the side floats are dedicated to storage . The full width main deck houses the guests and the owner.

Aménagement du concept de trimaran Domus

On paper, it is a nice promise, but this concept will have to be fleshed out to study its feasibility. If it is zero emission when sailing, the impact of building such a machine remains important.

bungalow-like interiors

For Domus Trimaran, Van Geest (see more here ) and Rob Doyle (see more here ) have designed a spacious interior of 780 sqm. In addition to the large internal spaces, the superyacht features multiple covered exterior areas, while also allocating all main guest areas on one deck without steps. In this way, Domus generates a unique villa/bungalow-like onboard experience.

The designers have looked at the Domus design from an architectural point of view. ‘Family life in a way is about protection. So why not build around that, create the protected spaces and maximize the functions of the space available in this one-level setup.’ they explain. All spaces are strategically laid out, to enjoy outside views and maintain a connection with what is happening but, at the same time, they are all connected to the communal exterior and interior spaces.

starting from ‘why not?’

The idea for the Domus Trimaran concept started from a simple question: Why Not? ‘Just because superyachts are what they are now, it does not mean they should stay this way.(…) We were constantly looking at every aspect of the design and saying, ‘I know we do it this way normally but is there a better way?’  the designers share.  ‘Therefore, we truly believe that this project will redefine what a multi-hull sailing Superyacht can be.’ they add.

After calculating the smallest vessel size that can host a one-floor layout without it being too bulky, the designers started forming Domus as an amalgamation of different innovative ideas. Rob Doyle Design focused on naval architecture, performance, and structural feasibilities, while Van Geest Design developed the styling and layouts.

DOMUS Trimaran 40 meter Zero-emission Yacht Concept

The DOMUS is an innovative concept design for a 40m zero-emission trimaran. The designers behind the trimaran are Van Geest and Rob Doyle , and the design duo amalgamated several innovative ideas to create the first yacht of 750 gross tons with zero carbon emissions.

The yacht combines superyacht luxury with an eco-friendly design, delivering a new direction for the yachting industry.

DOMUS yacht interior

Van Geest and Rob Doyle have combined their ideas to design the spacious interior of DOMUS. DOMUS means a single-story house built around an atrium with many rooms opening off the central atrium area.

The design is built around the idea of these traditional abodes, which originated from Rome and Pompeii.

The trimaran has used this concept to create an open, lofty feeling in the onboard area. The unique shape gives the yacht expansive real estate on board.

The interior of the DOMUS is a 783-square-meter deck split over two decks. There are six cabins on board, with four VIP cabins and two large owners suites with individual lounge areas.

The interior is a floating home on the water with cutting-edge designs and technology.

The spaces are laid out strategically to maximize the family feel of the trimaran and maintain a connection with the views. The interior includes a cinema room, gym, and a saloon with a bar.

The idea that sparked the design of the DOMUS was “Why not?” The design duo believes that just because superyachts are the way right now, why couldn’t they be done in another way.

The yacht was an amalgamation of different ideas, with Doyle focussing on naval architecture, performance, and structural feasibilities. Van Gees developed the styling and the layouts for DOMUS.

The vessel’s exterior is sleek and sophisticated and has been designed to bring the exterior of the ocean and views outside into the living spaces with large windows and a central open plan feel to the spaces inside.

The designers are working on a larger version of the 40m concept for a shipyard which could be the future of luxury yacht design.

Specifications

The DOMUS will be the first 40m long zero-emission yacht of 750 gross tons. The unique vessel will be powered by solar power, hydro regeneration, and hydrogen fuel cell systems.

The exterior is lined with solar panels to achieve the zero-emissions goal for DOMUS. The result is a vessel with an unlimited range, high speeds, space, sustainability, and carbon-free, noiseless cruising.

The tri-hull of the trimaran offers several design benefits that the designers are firm believers in. The trimaran is designed to heel 2 degrees to allow the weather hull to come out of the water.

This concept reduces drag and increases performance. This means a high level of comfort onboard for the guests, especially compared to a sailing or motor monohull, which experiences high rolling angles.

Large trimarans are proven to be faster than catamarans of the same size, and this kind of high performance would be impossible to achieve in a superyacht catamaran.

The trimaran is significantly cheaper to construct than a catamaran because it needs only one system in the center hull instead of two.

The yacht is truly the amalgamation of luxury yacht design and eco-friendly sailing.

2022: the yacht concept is announced by designers.

Domus Trimaran Concept

Van Geest Design’s new trimaran concept brings a whole new meaning to “floating home.”

Named after the single-story abodes found primarily in ancient Rome and Pompeii, Domus sports a distinctive shape that results in an inordinate amount of real estate on board. Penned in partnership with Rob Doyle Design, the 130-footer claims to have double the interior space of a catamaran of the same size and all the comfort of a superyacht.

Like its namesake, the vessel is centered around a striking atrium that connects the separate areas. Spanning just shy of 8,500 square feet, the interior is split between two decks and offers six spacious guest cabins, including not one but two owner’s suites with adjoining lounges. Elsewhere, you’ll find a cinema, gym, saloon, bar and a swimming pool. Of course, there’s also a spa so you can relax like a real Roman.

In contrast to the old-world name, the trimaran’s tech is at the bleeding edge. In fact, Van Geest claims Domus will be “the first truly zero-emission yacht over 750 gross tonnes.” To that end, the vessel will use a combination of solar power, hydro-regeneration technology and hydrogen fuel cells to ensure unlimited range and zero emissions. Essentially, the silent cruiser will generate, store and run on solar energy during the day and then switch to the battery system at night. It’s also fitted with a sail that provides extra power from the wind.

To top it off, Domus will be able to heel at an angle of two degrees to reduce drag and improve speeds with maximum comfort and minimal rolling. The Dutch firm says “a guest on board will experience a level of comfort underway, far superior to any sailing or motor monohull.”

Van Geest is known for creating disruptive concepts, like a 459-footer inspired by a pebble and a glass-clad 348-footer called Mirage , that aim to move the needle.

“Just because superyachts are what they are now, does not mean they should stay this way,” the studio said in a statement. “We truly believe that this project will redefine what a multi-hull sailing superyacht can be.”

At the very least, Domus should make a nice home on the high seas.

Domus: The 40m Trimaran Concept that Aims to be ‘zero-emission’ Unveiled

Rob Doyle Design and Van Geest Design collaborated to create Domus, a 40-meter sailing trimaran that boasts an interior volume comparable to a 60-metre motor yacht. Domus is a zero-emission yacht that aims to be the fastest, most space-efficient, and eco-conscious yacht to exceed 750 gross tons.

“The uniquely designed combination of solar power, hydro-regeneration technology and hydrogen fuel cells gives Domus unlimited range with zero emissions,” the design team said.

Behind the Drawing Board of Zero Emission Trimaran DOMUS

By Emily Dawkins

Rob Doyle Design and Van Geest Design have partnered up to bring an innovative new superyacht concept to the industry: 40m sailing trimaran DOMUS. With space and performance paramount to the design, DOMUS has been created as the, 'first truly zero emission yacht over 750 gross tonnes’. Superyachts.com sat down with Rob Doyle and Mark Small of Rob Doyle Design, and Pieter Van Geest of Van Geest Design, to find out more about this groundbreaking concept.

With a wealth of yachting knowledge and years of design expertise under their belts, Irish yacht design and naval architecture firm, Rob Doyle Design, and Dutch yacht design studio, Van Geest Design, have created nothing short of a masterpiece with their latest superyacht concept.

40m DOMUS is a completely unique one-floor trimaran concept powered by sustainable technologies that challenges the conventions of yacht design. Named after the Latin word 'domus' which means, ‘a single-storey house built around a courtyard known as an atrium’, the 40m vessel cleverly recreates this bungalow-style experience onboard. Six guest staterooms, including two expansive owner’s suites with private lounge areas, cleverly span across the one deck, and surround two courtyards which can open or close from above. Alongside this, a cinema room, gym, sauna, massage room and swimming pool are just some of the incredible amenities packed onboard.

Featuring a combination of solar power, hydro regeneration and hydrogen fuel cells, DOMUS has an unlimited range with zero emissions, with an optimised battery storage that allows for complete silence when at anchor.

As a unique, innovative and completely original design concept, we spoke to the trio behind the design to find out more.

Where did the inspiration for DOMUS come from?

Rob Doyle: We had a client approach us about a 40m catamaran which we started drawing up together, and we quickly saw that we were coming into the standard roadblocks that most multihulls experience. We know that with racing multihulls the trimaran is always faster, and so we looked at simplifying the boat by having all the systems and rigging loads in the main hull, with the two hulls on either side for tankage, storage and tenders. We saw a huge amount of advantages for a trimaran, and once we took that step forward we said “let's push it”. Let's see how far we can go with the beam before we run into difficulties, whilst having an eye on making sure it can be built. What we suddenly discovered was that there are so many advantages of going down this road that it kept getting better and better. So from there we came up with the amazing DOMUS concept.

How did you come to create her unique design?

RD: We were trying not to do the Google search of “what do catamarans and multihulls look like”, which is the biggest problem with the industry - that it is dictated by Google . People often Google “superyachts”, see a couple of yacht designs and decide that they ultimately want a 2.0 of the designer’s last boat, which makes all the boats very similar. We however, just started with a blank piece of paper. We wanted to go to our client and give him something fresh. It was a big risk, but we knew we were on a far better path and we could give him an amazing product by doing it this way.

Mark Small: It’s amazing how much DOMUS has touched a chord with people. We’ve been looking at it for a while and trying to come up with the best plan, but we didn't realise how good of an idea we hit on until we got the reaction from the public which was fantastic.

How long did the design process take?

RD: We’ve been working on this for about 4 or 5 months. No sketch is wasted and we’re constantly layering. You’re dictated by the development and the process of designing. Designers never stop drawing, it's in our nature to keep drawing until someone says stop or you've run out of time, so DOMUS constantly evolved!

MS: The great fun about it is that our mantra is “no idea is too mad”! It may not ultimately end up being there, but certainly nothing is off the table.

Pieter Van Geest: We’ve known each other for almost 30 years so it's been a very friendly collaboration. We all talk the same language, we all like to do new things. For us, copy and paste just doesn't fit our DNA.

Is DOMUS able to be built?

RD: That's our number one goal for all our concepts. We don't sketch boats that can’t be built. You see these crazy designs coming out and you know they can't be built, so we always start with a very solid foundation in regards to, how do we build this? How do we make the shipyard's construction easier? It has to be plausible before we make the jump forward with the layouts and systems; we need to know that we can actually build it first before we take that jump forward.

As a completely new, never-built-before vessel, how would you expect the build process to happen?

RD: If you look at how big ships are built, they are generally built in sections and then brought to the dry dock for assembly. That process is certainly repeatable with the trimaran. It’s possible to build and it's not something that hasn't been done before: all big ships and cruise liners are built on this modular approach, and there does have to be a touch of reality to it. So many concepts are copy and paste or in flights of fantasy and are produced for clickbait. This can be built and that's why we’re expecting the hard questions.

MS: We approached one or two yards to get a feel for this with them and they were extremely enthusiastic, they really have a can-do attitude. The yard’s have an appetite for it, we have an appetite for it, and obviously the market seems to have an appetite for it too: there's nothing else like it.

How did you come to reach the impressive characterisation of DOMUS being the ‘first truly zero emission yacht’?

RD: We know this is feasible, it's not that it's a pie in the sky. All the technologies are currently available and being used. The uniqueness of DOMUS is that we’ve been able to combine all those particular elements and are able to fit all this technology onboard: this is why it will be zero emission. We have to be very clear however that it doesn't mean that it's carbon neutral. What we’re talking about is as the boat operates, it will not emit any emissions.

How will she provide a comfortable sailing experience as a trimaran?

MS: DOMUS has the advantages of being a multihull, she’s not going to rock and roll at anchor, so has that real comfort and stability. When you’re at anchor you have your own private island and it's easy to get ashore with the tenders.

Why did you decide on a one-floor interior layout?

RD: We quickly realised that the interior was so vast we had to change how we designed it. So Pieter suggested an apartment set up. Once you break it up into these spaces, suddenly it all worked.

PVG: The challenge is that superyacht trimarans don't really exist. To look at all the other catamarans you can quickly see that the outer hulls are used for the cabins. This is a shame because you get staircases and it starts to become a more complicated and costly build. It was relatively easy to decide, and we started to think about if we do it all on one floor, what are we going to put in it? When we started to develop this we had the family in mind, so we wanted it to be protected too.

MS: The way that clients seem to be using their boats has changed since the pandemic: they’re spending a lot more time onboard and that needs to change the way that we look at and approach the boat. That's why we created these two enormous owner’s cabins onboard that have their own private sitting room: it's like a private apartment onboard. That is something exceptional on a 40m boat, you may see it on 80-90m where you have private decks but you just don't get that on a 40m, and that's the advantage of the space that we have. We also have two 8m tenders onboard. For a 40m boat that's incredible. Each of these are in the outside hulls which makes it very easy for the guests and the crew to move ashore.

What can we expect from Rob Doyle Design and Van Geest Design next?

RD: We’re quite comfortable with difficult projects. Our history has always been the tip of the sword with technology, whether it's the biggest rig in the world, or the biggest aluminium boat in the world, we’ve done a lot of those through our milestones over the last two and a half decades. The way the industry is going, we’ve tried to package the boats into a much more compact space: bigger isn't always best, yes we’ll always go that way, but with the 40m, we’ve packed a 60m motor boat into a sailing boat. That's a challenge that we enjoy doing: thinking a little bit differently from everybody else's metrics, and just making sure that we can do something different.

PVG: From our point of view, this is all really exciting as we always try to come up with new “things”, which is difficult because you don't always achieve them. In our design history, we have a couple of unique projects but this is definitely top because it has never been done before. It's all doable and sensible, and we look at each other and think why didn't anyone else come up with this before?

Domus is a 130FT Trimaran Concept With An Aim To Be Completely Emission-free

Global warming is a concern that can no longer be ignored. The yachting industry has contributed its fair share to the carbon-di-oxide emissions, and there have been conscious efforts to combat and design eco-friendly designs. One such amazing designer is Rob Doyle; with a two-decade experience in the large yacht sector, he is a visionary. "Just because superyachts are what they are now, does not mean they should stay this way. We were constantly looking at every aspect of the design and saying, 'is there a better way? We truly believe that this project will redefine what a multi-hull sailing superyacht can be.", says Rob Doyle.

The designer has now collaborated with Dutch-born yacht designer  Van Geest Design  to create a unique yacht - a trimaran. Its interior volume compares to that of a 60-meter rival; however, 'Domus' is environmentally conscious and the first of its kind zero emission yacht with over 750 GT.

domus trimaran interior

Domus is Latin for a single-story house built around an atrium and draws aspects from the design to create a lofty, open feeling. With a beam of 35m, the trimaran can comfortably house various luxuries in its interior space of 780 sq. m. Two decks of Domus can easily accommodate 12 guests within four VIP suites and two owner's suites accompanied by a private lounge area. For recreation, there is a bar in the main saloon along with a cinema room and gym. To make relaxation fun, there is a spa area near the swimming pool.

domus trimaran interior

Domus is a result of two years of extensive research; the designers have designed her in a way that ables her to reach her maximum potential. Domus can heel at an angle of two degrees to improve her speed and reduce drag. 'The uniquely designed combination of solar power, hydro-regeneration technology and hydrogen fuel cells gives Domus unlimited range with zero emissions.', said the design team. She powers through the daylight hours and transfers over to the battery system at night, thus remaining completely silent with zero emissions while at anchor. 'We strongly believe if you want the benefits of multi-hulls at a 40-meter-plus size, the only practical solution is a trimaran.', the design team adds.

Trimarans are cost-efficient and simple to construct; Domus too has all the systems and engineering located in the central hull, which helps maintain the crossbeam structures simpler and straightforward.

Alongside the 40-meter concept, the design duo are also working on a larger version of the idea for a shipyard.

The Trimaran Redefining a Life at Sea

Drawing on the architecture of Ancient Rome while incorporating cutting-edge green technologies: the trimaran designed by Van Geest Design and Rob Doyle Design aspires to be the first truly zero-emission superyacht

trimarano domus

A trimaran is a type of pleasure craft that offers considerable living space, as its three hulls are connected by a single deck allowing for internal space on a 40 meter vessel comparable to that of a 60 meter monohull. On the main deck of the Domus trimaran , a spa and gym with a pool are developed around the two atriums, which together with the water-level platforms make the yacht look like an authentic villa on the water . Interior spaces are completed with dining, living, lounge/cinema areas, four guests cabins and two VIP cabins with a private lounge and sea views.

trimarano domus

“In the last years, we have seen the trend in the industry of ‘being want to be part of the surroundings.’ In a way, trying to design to get the exterior surroundings into the yacht’s interior,” explain the designers Pieter van Geest and Rob Doyle. “In Domus , Pieter van Geest and Rob Doyle looked at it from an architectural point of view. Family life, in a way, is about protection. So why not build around that, create the protected spaces and maximize the functions of the space available in this 1 level setup. All spaces have a view of the outside, so they do not lose the connection with what is happening. Still, they are connected to the communal exterior and interior spaces.”

trimarano domus

While the main deck is dedicated to wellbeing, leisure and relaxation for guests, below deck the hulls become containers for technical spaces and areas dedicated to the crew. Specifically, the central hull houses crew cabins, the galley and technical areas, while the two lateral hulls (called “side floats” in trimarans) hold tenders and toys.

trimarano domus

In addition to the innovative distribution of spaces, the Domus trimaran aspires to become the first ultra-modern vessel over 750 gross tonnage with zero emissions. “The uniquely designed combination of Solar power, Hydro Regeneration & Hydrogen Fuel cells gives Domus an unlimited range with Zero Emissions,” say the designers. A accumulated system of solar energy and optimized batteries allows the trimaran to work both during day and night, without emissions and silently.

The trimaran is already a stable boat, but to minimize drag and increase performance, Domus was designed to heel at a two-degree angle so that cruising is pleasant, even for those unaccustomed to navigating the seas.

trimarano domus

The Domus trimaran represents a great opportunity to reflect on the traditional nautical cannons. “From the start, the approach in Domus has been ' Why Not ,’ explain the designers. “Just because superyachts are what they are now doesn’t mean they should stay this way.”

Domus trimaran aims to become to first truly zero-emission yacht

Domus trimaran aims to become to first truly zero-emission yacht.

Yacht design studios Van Geest Design and Rob Doyle Design have introduced “Domus Trimaran,” an impressive 40-meter-long sailing trimaran with an interior volume that rivals a 60-meter motor yacht. With speed, space, and eco-conscious cruising at the forefront of the design, Domus aims to become the first-ever truly zero-emission yacht of over 750 gross tonnes.

The Domus megayacht has been designed with performance in mind. It would be powered by a uniquely designed combination of hydrogen fuel cells, hydrogeneration technology, and solar energy . This would give the yacht unlimited range with zero emissions.

An optimized system of solar power and battery storage allows the yacht to the motor during daylight hours and then transfer over to the battery system during the nighttime hours. To reduce drag and improve speeds, it will be able to heel at an angle of two degrees. This will also ensure a comfortable cruise with minimal rolling.

Domus superyacht concept underway.

For the Domus, Van Geest Design (VGD) and Rob Doyle Design (RDD) devised a spacious interior of 780 square-meter to have a villa- or bungalow-like onboard experience, with all of the living spaces arranged across one deck without steps. There are six guest cabins in total, with four VIPs and two sizeable owner’s suites, each equipped with its own lounge area. Amenities include two atriums covered by solar-paneled louvers, a cinema room, a gym, and a saloon with a bar. It also hosts a spa area with a swimming pool. In addition, the superyacht features multiple covered exterior areas while also allocating all main guest areas on one deck without steps.

Domus superyacht concept interior.

Domus is a trimaran, which means it has three hulls instead of a catamaran’s two. Additionally, the two companies have designed the vessel to explore how much more efficient this class of boat is by comparison to a catamaran. According to the design studios, the trimaran is also easier to build and moves faster than equivalent-sized catamarans while offering more space and more comfort.

Working together on the project, Rob Doyle and Van Geest Design have done extensive research into the practicalities and safety elements associated with trimarans. “We strongly believe if you want the benefits of multihulls at a 40-meter-plus size, the only practical solution is a trimaran,” the design team added .

Alongside this 40-meter concept, the design duo is working on a larger version of the concept for a shipyard.

The 40m Trimaran Concept aims to be The First Zero-Emission Superyacht

Rob Doyle is one of the new generations of yacht designers tackling the modern challenges of the large yacht business. With a solid 20-year career evolution in the large yacht sector, he and Van Geest Design have come together to present a 40-meter sailing catamaran – Domus. With an interior volume that rivals a 60-meter motor yacht, she aims to go eco-conscious cruising and become the first ‘zero-emission’ yacht over 750 GT.

“Just because superyachts are what they are now, does not mean they should stay this way. We were constantly looking at every aspect of the design and saying, ‘is there a better way? We truly believe that this project will redefine what a multi-hull sailing superyacht can be.”, say the designers.

40m Domus yacht

Domus , meaning a single-story house built around an atrium in Latin, the yacht has a beam of 35m and features an interior space of 780 sq. m, all on one deck. The craft borrows aspects of this design to create a lofty, open feeling on board. Rob Doyle and Van Geest Design have done extensive research into the practicalities and safety elements associated with trimarans.

The trimaran spreads across two decks. She can accommodate 12 guests in six guest cabins, with four VIPs and two sizeable owner’s suites, each equipped with its own lounge area. There is a bar in the main saloon. Other amenities include a cinema room, gym, and saloon. Domus also features a spa area with a swimming pool, making the trimaran fun and exciting.

Inside of the 40m Domus superyacht

To help reduce drag and improve speeds, she can heel at an angle of two degrees. This will also ensure a comfortable cruise with minimal rolling. Domus is designed with an emphasis on performance. “The uniquely designed combination of solar power, hydro-regeneration technology, and hydrogen fuel cells gives Domus unlimited range with zero emissions,” the design team said. The trimaran powers through the daylight hours and transfers over to the battery system at night. This also means Domus is entirely silent with zero emissions while at anchor.

Alongside the 40-meter concept, the design duo is also working on a larger version of the idea for a shipyard. “We strongly believe if you want the benefits of multi-hulls at a 40-meter-plus size, the only practical solution is a trimaran,” the design team added.

As compared to catamarans, trimarans help keep down the costs. Domus has all the systems and engineering in the central hull, just like a standard construction to keep things simple. The main hull takes all the rigging forces, thus maintaining crossbeam structures simpler and generally the overall system being more straightforward. The team behind Domus are the design masterminds of over 60 superyachts and has extensive detailed design experience, knowledge, and data, which makes it easy to undertake a mammoth of a project.
