1 WEEK – 64 Nautical Miles

Day 1 lefkas.

You will arrive in Lefkas and you will fill all the necessary paperwork and start the check-in procedure. After that, you are free to walk around the city center, have a delicious dinner and grab a drink (or more) in the various nightclubs and bars the island has to offer.

Day 2 PALAIROS 11 N.M.

Time to sail towards Palairos, which many call the diamond of the area. It is full of taverns and greek bars and has nothing less than the popular Ionian Islands. Many choose this place for their summer vacation.

Day 3 KALAMOS 16  N.M.

This mountainous island hides some of the prettiest beaches of the Ionian Sea. In the summer it becomes full of life with several yachts visiting. Don’t forget to enjoy fish delicacies by the sea, and stroll around exploring the place.

Day 5 KASTOS 5 N.M.

The quiet and little island of Kastos is full of olive trees and beautiful small bays in which you can anchor and spend the night with your friends on board. This region is known for easy line of sight navigation, short distances between the islands and generally very predictable and mild weather and wind conditions.

What is the best month to sail in Lefkas?

The south Ionian is lovely throughout the season, however, if you prefer to avoid the crowds and enjoy better charter rates too, we would recommend booking outside of the peak season. What qualifications do you need to sail in Lefkas, Greece?

To charter bareboat from Lefkas you will need one person (the skipper) with a sailing license and a co-skipper with sailing experience. It is always wise to email a copy of your sailing license to your charter consultant in advance so they can double check that it is acceptable by the Greek authorities.

Sailing Holidays in Lefkas

Lefkada, or Lefkas (in Greek: Λευκάδα), is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, on the west coast of Greece, which connects with the mainland by a long causeway and floating bridge. The city of Lefkada, is situated in the northern part of the island, approximately 20 minutes, by automobile, away from Aktion National Airport. The Prefecture of Lefkada comprises Lefkada island, plus, the smaller nearby islands of Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Madouri and Skorpios are of unparalleled beauty. It is the smallest prefecture of Greece in both land area and population (2001 census).

Lefkas (Italian: Santa Maura) is a hilly island marked by karstic action, lying off the Playia Peninsula in Acarnania, from which it is separated by a shallow lagoon varying in width between 600 m and 5 km. It is now linked with the mainland either by a causeway or a ferry. Most of the island is occupied by a range of hills, rising to a height of 1158 m in Mount Stavrotas, and running south-west to end at Cape Doukato. It was from this Leucadian Rock of gleaming white limestone, that Sappho was supposed to have thrown herself for love of the handsome Phaon. Lefkas never had any permanent natural connection with the mainland. The shingle spit at the northern tip was pierced in ancient times by the Corinthians to provide a channel for shipping, much like the spit to the south of Lefkas town, which came into being in the Middle Ages, as a result of the establishment of salt-pans. Off the south-east coast of Lefkas, you will find the beautiful unspoilt island of Meganisi, with sandy beaches and famous sea-caves. It is ideal for yacht charters with family or friends, either bareboat or skippered. Westward to Lefkas, there are tiny islands like Skorpios and Madouri, and on the east side the well-equipped marinas of Vasiliki and Nydri provide safe anchorage protected from the occasional strong westerlies.

The must-see ports and anchorages include: Palairos, Mytika, Kastos, Port Leone, Episkopi, Papanikolis Cave, Vathi, Spartakhori, Menidion (Ambracian Gulf), Sivota, Vasiliki and Rouda Bay.

History of Lefkas

The earliest evidence of human settlement on the island dates back to the Neolithic period. In the 7th century BC, the town of Lefkas was founded by settlers from Corinth, who closed off the south end of the lagoon, opposite the St George Fort, by a 600 m long mole, remains of which are still visible under water (the sunken breakwater). They also cut a channel through the spit of shingle at the north end of the lagoon, opposite the Santa Maura Fort.

In the Middle Ages the island belonged to the barons of Kefallinia and Zakynthos. In 1479 it was taken by the Turks – the only Ionian Island to fall into their hands – but was recovered for the Venetians by Morosini in 1684.

As a result of the vicissitudes of its history and a series of earthquakes (the most recent in 1953) Lefkas has preserved very few old buildings.

Ports and Local Amenities in Lefkada

Preveza, Nidri and Lefkas port are the most important bases for bareboat yacht charters in the southern Ionian, as is Corfu and Gouvia in the north Ionian. The Lefkas canal enables sailors to sail, or moor, near the coastline of the east side of the island, which has 90% of the good anchorages.

If you are sailing from the north, the entrance can be found by locating the Santa Maura Fort. If you are looking south-west, you find the Santa Maura Fort and the north entrance to the canal, and in the distance, Lefkas town. The canal proper (dotted lines) starts after Lefkas Town and is marked by red and green poles, and by red and green buoys when the canal turns south. The ancient submerged breakwater is located opposite to St. George’ s Fort.

The entrance to Sivota Bay is sometimes a bit tricky. Once in, you can only anchor at the east side just around the cape, and only if you proceed through the dogleg, you can anchor anywhere in 3-8 m.There are also quays on the south and west sides of the bay where you can find tavernas and other local amenities.

The port of Vassiliki is located in the south-east of Lefkas, deep in the large bay of Vassiliki . The west side of this bay, close to the village of Pondi, comprises a nice anchorage (anchor in 4-8 m). The actual port is located in the east side of the bay and is very shallow. You will just have to stay close to the breakwater. Natural springs which run through a washing house at the south of Vassiliki, surely favour this part of the island.

The town of Spartakhori on the island of Meganisi, can easily be seen from the north and west. Once you are in the bay, the small harbour will be right in front of you. It represents a good shelter, though you will have to anchor in considerable depths (15-25 m). With northeast winds blowing at night, the anchorage near the tavernas is the best location in the bay. The village of Spartakhori is as enchanting, as enjoyable is the beautiful winding road leading there, and is also definitely worth the climb.

Nidri village, however, is more boisterous, just like the fair but crowded inlet across. Apart from July and August this inlet is a must-anchor, and you can use the sunken coaster there to tie an extra line. Even though the Nidri quay provides water, fuel, and any other supplies you may need, it places you in the middle of yacht charter bases, tripper boats, ferries etc.

The landlocked Vlikho Bay provides a good all-round shelter to anchor in a muddy bottom of just 8-2 meters. However, anchoring off the quay of the quiet Vlikho village can be uncomfortable in stronger daytime winds.

In Lefkas Town the houses have a rather unusual structure, however they are designed carefully in order to withstand earthquakes. Go stern-to or bows-to the town quay on the northe-west or south side, the muddy bottom is generally good holding.

On Modra Island, there is the villa of the family of Aristotelis Valaoritis (1824-79), greece’s national poet, a sight worth visiting, since you can also anchor in front of the baroque building.

The Skorpios Island is also private (owned by the Onassis family), but as long you don’t cross the high water mark you can anchor on both sides of the small sandy isthmus south of the island.

Das Gebiet des Ionischen Meeres zieht sich von der Westküste Griechenlands bis zur Südküste Italiens und nach Sizilien . Das Highlight in diesem Revier sind die zu Griechenland gehörenden Ionischen Inseln. Aufgrund der ruhigen und gleichmäßigen Winde ist dieses Revier auch für weniger erfahrene Segler und Familientörns geeignet.

Das milde Klima bringt eine grüne, vegetative Vielfalt hervor und lockt Wanderer an. Die Inseln sind wegen ihrer Lage auch geprägt durch verschiedenste kulturelle Einflüsse, die heute noch erkennbar sind. Über die Jahrhunderte haben Franzosen, Briten und Italiener ihre Spuren zum Beispiel in der Kulinarik und Architektur hinterlassen. Teils ist die Küste flach mit weißen Sandstränden, teils besteht sie aus Steilküsten mit kleinen Buchten, die nur vom Meer aus zugänglich sind. Gerade Yachtcharterer haben die Chance, diese besonderen Orte zu erkunden und die Vielfalt der Inseln beim Insel-Hopping zu erleben.

Ein Törn in den Ionischen Inseln

Korfu, die grüne insel, und die nördliche gruppe.

Korfu an der Grenze zu Albanien bildet mit den Diapontischen Inseln den nordwestlichsten Rand Griechenlands. Korfu ist die bevölkerungsreichste der Ionischen Inseln und bietet eine gute Infrastruktur. Auch die Auswahl an Yachten ist groß. An der Schwelle zur Adria bringen die milden Temperaturen und kräftigen Niederschläge während der Winterzeit die Insel zum Grünen und Blühen und lädt zu Wanderungen ein. An der Küste liegen schöne Sandstrände zum Baden und Sonnen sowie Wassersporten, etwa Kitesurfen. Spazieren Sie durch die Gassen in Korfu-Stadt, auf Griechisch Kerkyra, und lassen Sie die verschiedenen kulturellen Einflüsse der Insel in Architektur und Kulinarik auf sich wirken. Besuchen Sie die „Mäuseinsel“ Pondikonisi mit ihrer byzantinischen Kapelle aus dem 11. Jahrhundert oder die Paläste der Reichen, die Korfu als Erholungsziel nutzten, zum Beispiel die Kaiserin Sissi.

Von den Diapontischen Inseln sind drei bewohnt, Othoni, Errikousa und Mathraki. Hier gibt es weniger touristische Infrastruktur, daher sollte man vorher seine Versorgung sichern. Dafür erwarten einen rund um die Inseln schöne Sandstrände, Natur und auch in der Hochsaison Ruhe. Die unbewohnten Inseln Diaplo, Trachia und Diakopo prägen dagegen eher Felsenriffe.

15 Kilometer südlich von Korfu liegt Paxos . Die Insel kann nur per Fähre erreicht werden und ist touristisch wenig entwickelt. Sie hat ihren Namen somit bewahrt, der sich vom lateinischen Wort für Frieden ableitet. Die drei Hauptorte Gaios, Lakka und Laggos verfügen über eigene Häfen mit schönen Promenaden. Im Osten finden Sie Sand- und Kiesstrände, im Westen zum offenen Meer raus dominieren Kalkklippen mit Höhlen. Oliven- und Kiefernwälder spenden Spaziergängern Schatten.

Grün, weiß, türkisblau – das sind die Farben von Antipaxos . Sie ist eine der kleinsten Ionischen Inseln und liegt nur wenige Kilometer südlich von Paxos. Sie ist bekannt für ihre schönen Strände umgeben von weißen Kalkfelsen. Auf der Insel wird Wein angebaut, den Sie in den Tavernen verkosten können. Decken Sie sich am besten vorher mit Vorräten ein, denn hier sind die Möglichkeiten rar, dafür können Sie die Ruhe genießen.

Die südliche Gruppe der Ionischen Inseln

Die Insel Lefkada liegt etwa 100 Kilometer südlich von Korfu und ist touristisch weniger frequentiert. Sie beeindruckt daher mit traumhaften Buchten, weißen Kalksteinklippen und üppiger Vegetation. Im Inneren haben die Dörfer ihre Ursprünglichkeit bewahrt, denn sie liegen in den Bergen, die durchaus über 1000 Meter Höhe erreichen. Richtung Osten ist die Küste wie auf den anderen Inseln flacher als an der felsigen Westküste. Entspannen Sie an den schönen Stränden von Lefkada oder probieren Sie andere Wassersportarten wie Wind- oder Kitesurfing aus.  

Auf Ithaka wandeln Sie auf den mythologischen Spuren von Homers Epen. Vom Kloster Katharo können Sie sich vom höchsten Punkt der Insel einen Überblick verschaffen. In der Hauptstadt Vathy können Sie im maritimen und archäologischen Museum in die Geschichte der Region einsteigen.

Kefalonia , die größte der Inseln, erhebt sich sanfter aus dem Golf von Patras als die anderen Inseln. Argostoli, die Hauptstadt, liegt an der Westküste. Sie ist moderner, da die ursprüngliche Stadt in den 1950er-Jahren einem Erdbeben zum Opfer fiel, eine originale Altstadt sucht man hier daher vergebens. Auf dem Fisch- und Gemüsemarkt können Sie sich mit frischem Proviant versorgen und in den Restaurants in die lokale Küche eintauchen. Rund um die Insel haben sich kleine Buchten mit Stränden und Höhlen in den Kalkstein gewaschen.

Zakynthos ist die südlichste der Ionischen Inseln. Auch hier begegnet einem die Mischung aus schönen Stränden, klarem Wasser, Kalksteinhöhlen und grünem Inland. Erkunden Sie Zakynthos-Stadt und stürzen Sie sich in das Nachtleben. Auch ein Besuch der Blauen Grotten mit ihren tollen Farben lohnt sich. Der Süden der Insel gehört zu einem Meeresnationalpark. Begeben Sie sich auf Abenteuer im berühmten Shipwreck Bay oder schnorcheln und tauchen Sie mit geschützten Seeschildkröten.

Die bequemste und schnellste Anreise für einen Yachtcharter ab Lefkas ist die Flugreise. Der Flughafen Preveza (PVK) liegt auf dem griechischen Festland. Die Insel erreicht man innerhalb von 40 min bequem über eine Schwenkbrücke. Wünschen Sie einen Shuttle, der Sie direkt zur Marina bringt, geben Sie uns bitte eine Woche vor Charter Bescheid.

Kostenlose Parkplätze für Autos sind in der Marina von Lefkas vorhanden. Die Kosten für Camper belaufen sich auf 26,00 € pro Tag.

Aufgrund der Gesetzeslage in Griechenland ist es nicht möglich, Charterverträge schon vorab beim Hafenamt bestätigen zu lassen. Laut griechischem Gesetz muss die Originalunterschrift des Kunden und der Crewliste auf den Verträgen vor Ort erfolgen. Erst danach können wir Ihre Schiffspapiere beim Hafenkapitän vorlegen. Bitte haben Sie daher Verständnis, dass es durch mögliche Wartezeiten bei der Hafenpolizei zu Verzögerungen für Sie kommen kann.

Achtung: Das kroatische Küstenpatent ist in Griechenland nicht mehr gültig.

U vliegt  Corfu of Preveza. Transfer Preveza-luchthaven - Lefkas duurt 30 min. Vliegt u op Corfu: taxi naar ferry (15 min), oversteek naar Igoumenitsa (15 min), taxi naar Lefkas (2 uur).

Dit flottielje begint veel zuidelijker dan alle andere. Dit betekent dat het zeilgebied minder druk is en dat u nieuwe mooie gebieden kunt ontdekken.

De langere heen- en terugreis is zeker de moeite waard. Het is aan te bevelen een één-week flottielje te combineren met een verblijf aan wal, zodat de heen- en terugvlucht hierop aansluit.

Das Ionische Meer ist eins der Top-Ziele in Griechenland, das Charterangebot wächst dort seit Jahren kontinuierlich. Nun baut auch die deutsche Charterfirm Sun Charter ihre Präsenz dort aus. Seit vielen Jahren haben die Wolfrathshausener auf Korfu eine größere Station, doch seit Jahren verlagert sich rund die Hälfte der Kunden zum Start lieber nach Lefkada, da man dort mitten im Herzen des Revieres startet. Sun Charter verlegt nun einige Schiffe nach Lefkada, die dort in Kooperation mit der griechischen Charterfirma “Ionian Catamarans” gemanagt werden. Ebenfalls neu für 2023: Der Charter Revierführer “Ionisches Meer” ist zum Saisonstart in einer 4., aktualisierten Auflage erschienen. Das Buch ist auf die Bedürfnisse von Chartercrews zugeschnitten, indem es leichter und kompakter als viele der anderen Revierführer ist und über sehr übersichtliche Karten das Revier in Abschnitte aufteilt. Dazu werden die Highlights des Revieres vorgestellt und konkrete Routenvorschläge gegeben sowie Anekdoten aus 25 Jahren Reviererfahrung von YACHT-Reise-Ressortleiter Andreas Fritsch eingespleißt. Darüber hinaus gibt es natürlich alle wichtigen nautischen Infos und auch Tipps, wo es in der Hochsaison besonders voll wird und was dann Alternativen sind. Das Buch gibt es hier.

Törnvorschlag ab Lefkada

Wer im Sommer segelt und den harten Meltemi der Ägäis meiden will, der ist im Ionischen Meer gut aufgehoben. Zu dieser Zeit dominiert dort eine leichtere, oft nordwestliche Brise, die von der Thermik beeinflusst ist. Angenehme drei bis vier Windstärken sind dann die Regel, dazu kommen teils ausgeprägte Flauten über Nacht – was viele Crews am Anker sehr zu schätzen wissen. Mittlerweile erfreut sich der Start ab Lefkada, im Herzen des Revieres, größerer Beliebtheit als ein Törnbeginn ab dem weiter nördlich gelegenen Korfu.

Das verwundert nicht, hat man doch ab Lefkada die größere Auswahl an Inseln und Zielen. Und es entfällt der oft etwas zähe Schlag von Korfu bis Paxos und danach weiter gen Süden. Wer direkt in Lefkada ablegt, kann gleich mit dem Insel-Hopping beginnen. Meganisi, Kefalonia, Ithaka, Kalamos – jeden Tag wartet voraus ein neues Eiland.

A cruise in the Ionian Islands

Corfu, the green island, and the northern group.

Corfu , on the border with Albania, forms the northwesternmost edge of Greece with the Diapontic Islands. Corfu is the most populated of the Ionian Islands and offers a good infrastructure. There is also a wide choice of yachts. On the threshold of the Adriatic Sea, the mild temperatures and heavy rainfall during the winter season make the island green and blooming, inviting to hikes. On the coast there are beautiful sandy beaches for swimming and sunbathing as well as water sports, such as kite surfing. Stroll through the alleys in Corfu Town, Kerkyra in Greek, and take in the island's various cultural influences in architecture and cuisine. Visit the "mouse island" of Pondikonisi, with its 11th-century Byzantine chapel, or the palaces of the wealthy who used Corfu as a resort destination, such as the Empress Sissi.

Of the Diapontic Islands , three are inhabited, Othoni, Errikousa and Mathraki. There is less tourist infrastructure here, so you should secure your supplies beforehand. On the other hand, around the islands you can find beautiful sandy beaches, nature and peace and quiet even in the high season. The uninhabited islands of Diaplo, Trachia and Diakopo are characterized by rocky reefs.

15 kilometers south of Corfu is Paxos . The island can be reached only by ferry and is little developed in terms of tourism. It has thus preserved its name, which is derived from the Latin word for peace. The three main villages Gaios, Lakka and Laggos have their own harbors with beautiful promenades. In the east you will find sandy and pebbly beaches, in the west out to the open sea dominate limestone cliffs with caves. Olive and pine forests provide shade for walkers.

Green, white, turquoise blue - these are the colors of Antipaxos . It is one of the smallest Ionian islands and is located only a few kilometers south of Paxos. It is known for its beautiful beaches surrounded by white limestone rocks. Wine is grown on the island, which you can taste in the taverns. It is best to stock up beforehand, because here the opportunities are scarce, but you can enjoy the tranquility.

The southern group of the Ionian Islands

The island of Lefkada is located about 100 kilometers south of Corfu and is less frequented by tourists. Therefore, it impresses with dreamlike bays, white limestone cliffs and lush vegetation. In the interior, the villages have preserved their originality, because they are located in the mountains, which can easily reach heights of over 1000 meters. Towards the east, as on the other islands, the coast is flatter than on the rocky west coast. Relax on the beautiful beaches of Lefkada or try other water sports like windsurfing or kitesurfing.

On Ithaca , walk in the mythological footsteps of Homer's epics. From the monastery Katharo you can get an overview from the highest point of the island. In the capital, Vathy, you can delve into the history of the region at the maritime and archaeological museum.

Kefalonia , the largest of the islands, rises more gently from the Gulf of Patras than the other islands. Argostoli, the capital, is located on the west coast. It is more modern, as the original town fell victim to an earthquake in the 1950s, so you won't find an original old town here. You can stock up on fresh provisions at the fish and vegetable market, and sample the local cuisine in the restaurants. Around the island, small bays with beaches and caves have washed into the limestone.

Zakynthos is the southernmost of the Ionian Islands. Here, too, you will encounter the mixture of beautiful beaches, clear water, limestone caves and green inland. Explore Zakynthos town and plunge into the nightlife. A visit to the Blue Caves with their great colors is also worthwhile. The south of the island belongs to a marine national park. Go on adventures in the famous Shipwreck Bay or snorkel and dive with protected sea turtles.
