Review of Skud 18

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

DaggerBoard

The Skud 18 is equipped with a daggerboard keel. A daggerboard is a lifting keel that can be lowered and raised, allowing the boat to enter shallow waters as well.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Skud 18 is 2.82, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Skud 18 is about 84 kg/cm, alternatively 471 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 84 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 471 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 23.05

Maintenance

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The SKUD18 is the result of collaboration between Hansa Sailing's Chris Mitchell and B&B Technology and Innovation - Julian Bethwaite and Martin Billoch.

By combining Mitchell's unique understanding and ideology of sailing for people with disabilities with 20 years of Bethwaite's high performance skiff experience, the result is the innovative 'lead assisted skiff' (LAS), the SKUD18.

The boat is an exciting challenge for able-bodied and disabled sailors alike. This boat has been designed from a performance basis, to offer scintillating, crisp and snappy response to sailors regardless of their mobility.

Mitchell, designer of all Hansa sailcraft and support equipment notes, 'The SKUD18 is very versatile and can be handled by a variety of crew configurations. The helmsperson can transfer manually and be steering with tillers, or be in a fixed seat on the centreline using a manual joystick, push/pull rods, or a servo assist joystick with full control of all functions. The forward crew can either be on the centreline, transferring manually, even riding trapeze. As its name denotes, the SKUD18 is a  SK iff of  U niversal  D esign and can be sailed by people with all levels of physical ability.'

For Paralympic competition the SKUD18 sails with two sailors, male and one female, seated on the centreline. The SKUD18 will be sailed at the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.

SKUD 18: Maybe the boat needs a better name

Published on March 4th, 2013 by Editor -->

Designed by Julian Bethwaite and selected in 2005 as the new two-person boat for the 2008 Paralympic Games this summer, the SKUD18 continues to fly below the radar. “The 2.4 and the Sonar both began with able-bodied racing; they each had established classes before they became Paralympic boats,” explained French. “But the SKUD 18 was just the opposite. It has been harder to build on the able-bodied side; that’s the crux that the boat needs to overcome.”

Maybe it’s the boat’s name. The Urban Dictionary defines Skud as: 1) A person that appears attractive from far away, but when seen closer is actually ugly; 2) A derogatory reference to someone or something; or 3) A spliff with only tobacco at the beginning, the rest being purely marijuana. None of these references seem to have great marketing qualities.

“It is remarkable that this boat is only used for disabled sailing,” remarked Scuttlebutt editor Craig Leweck, who reviewed the boat in 2008. “It has all the elements of a skiff with the benefit of being lead assisted. With a tube-launched asymmetrical spinnaker and a modified high performance 29er stayed rig, the boat is fast and fun to sail. For people learning how to sail, the fixed seats eliminate the awkwardness that new sailors experience when moving around in a boat. For the daysailor, add surround sound and drink holders, and the SKUD 18 is speedy way to tool around the harbor. And for the aging keelboat sailor it provides the dinghy experience without all the athleticism needed.”

skud 18 sailboat

Interestingly, the SKUD’s commitment to disabled sailing may also become its detriment. “It is a fun boat to sail, but what I dearly missed while doing the campaign is that it is not an open class,” said French. “I want to be able to compete against able-bodied people too. But what the boat did introduce me to was the fun of sailing with an asymmetrical spinnaker. Once you sail with that configuration you kind of get addicted to it. However, now I am looking for the next able-bodied class I can participate in. That’s what makes sailing so unique for people with disabilities; we can go out and race against able bodied people and be treated the same.”

Does French have aspirations for the 2016 Paralympic Games? “I am taking a break right now. The SKUD was a reminder of how important open sailing was to me, so that’s what I have been doing lately. I have been doing some beach cat sailing, and I have been checking out the J/70. What I need to do is take a look at the available options for me.”

This is a "skiff" targeting ablebodied and disabled sailors designed by Julian Bethwaite. Since I am working on a similar project for me personally I'm curious if anyone has seen or sailed this boat . I'm interested in comments regarding the design concept as well. Doug, I have seen one down at WSC in Sydney. I have seen it on the shore and out sailing but have not sailed it. My general comments are: 1) Very interesting boat and well set up. The seats/steering and sail control systems all show a well thought through design to make it easier to handle and borrows a lot of setup from the other skiffs. 2) The boat heals a fair bit. Because the crew is on the centre line it has no righting moment until healed. This means that the dynamics downwind are quite different to other "skiffs". It dosent carry the apparent wind far enough forward to really "hook in" like a 49er or 29er. It would be interesting to comapre the boat to other small keel boats..... Nobody

Crew member on watch duty on Mike Lynch's yacht says he was 'walking on the walls' of the boat as he tried to save passengers

  • A crew member who was on board the "Bayesian" when it sank off Sicily has spoken about what happened.
  • British sailor Matthew Griffiths said he alerted the yacht's captain as strong winds hit.
  • Griffiths and two others are under investigation following the yacht's sinking.

Insider Today

A crew member who was on board British tech tycoon Mike Lynch's "Bayesian" yacht when it sank off the coast of Porticello, Sicily , this month has opened up about the incident.

Matthew Griffiths, a British sailor who was on watch duty on the vessel when it sank, told prosecutors that he had awoken the yacht's captain as "the wind was blowing at 20 knots," Italian news agency ANSA reported .

He said the captain then "ordered to wake everyone else up" before Griffiths "stored away the pillows and plants, closed the windows of the sitting room on the bow and some hatches."

After being thrown from the tilting ship into the water once, Griffiths said he climbed back on board and was "walking on the walls" as he and other crew members attempted to save those they could.

Griffiths, the boat's captain James Cutfield, and the yacht's engineer Tim Parker Eaton are under investigation following the sinking.

Ansa reported that the attorneys of Griffiths and Parker Eaton may request "technical consultancies to clarify the causes of the shipwreck."

Related stories

The head of the public prosecutor's office of Termini Imerese, Ambrogio Cartosio, previously said he was investigating a "crime hypothesis" of culpable shipwreck and manslaughter .

Experts have said the state-of-the-art yacht should not have sunk so easily .

Seven people died after the Bayesian went down.

Among the victims were Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah.

Speaking of the survivors, Griffiths said that "Cutfield rescued the little girl and her mother," referring to Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter.

Mike Lynch, the founder of Autonomy, was on the yacht with friends and family celebrating his recent acquittal in a fraud trial.

Stephen Chamberlain, a former vice president of finance at Autonomy who was also a defendant in the fraud trial, died in a separate incident days before the Bayesian sank.
