Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the Swan 48

eBook: How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 15.2 suggests that the Swan 48 will need a stiff breeze to get her going. In light conditions, unless you've got plenty of time on your hands, motor-sailing may be the way to go.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 39.2 means that the Swan 48 will have a tendency to heel excessively in a gust, and she'll need to be reefed early to keep her sailing upright in a moderate breeze.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 310, tells us the Swan 48 is clearly a heavy displacement cruising boat. You can load her down with all your cruising gear and equipment and it will hardly affect her waterline. Not an ideal choice for coastal sailing, but she'll come into her own on an offshore passage in testing conditions.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 42.5 suggests that crew comfort of a Swan 48 in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of a heavy bluewater cruising boat. Pitching and rolling will be well damped - your cup of coffee on the salon table stands a reasonable chance of staying there in most conditions.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 1.7 tells us that a Swan 48 would be a safer choice of sailboat for an ocean passage than one with a CSF of more than 2.0.

Any Questions?

What is the history of S&S Swan 48?

The history of the S&S Swan 48 is quite fascinating. Here are some highlights:

  • The S&S Swan 48 was designed by Sparkman & Stephens, one of the most renowned naval architecture firms in the world, founded in 1929 by Olin Stephens and Drake Sparkman;
  • The S&S Swan 48 was built by Nautor Oy, a Finnish company that specializes in high-quality sailing yachts under the Swan brand. The company was founded in 1966 by Pekka Koskenkylä;
  • The S&S Swan 48 was in production between 1971 and 1975, with 46 hulls built in total. It is not to be confused with a later German Frers designed Swan 48 model that was in production between 1995 and 2003;
  • The S&S Swan 48 was designed to rate under the I.O.R. (International Offshore Rule) and at the same time to offer the comforts of a great cruising boat. Because of this design criteria and its extremely strong structure, the S&S Swan 48 suits very well for transocean racing as well as comfortable cruising and even circumnavigating the world;
  • The S&S Swan 48 is famous for its two wins in the Newport-Bermuda Race, a prestigious offshore sailing event that covers about 635 nautical miles (1,176 kilometers) from Newport, Rhode Island to Bermuda. The first win was by 'Noryema VIII' in 1972, skippered by Ted Turner, and the second win was by 'Constellation' in 1992, skippered by John Winder;
  • The S&S Swan 48 has also participated in other notable races and events, such as the Fastnet Race, the Sydney-Hobart Race, the Transatlantic Race, the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers), and the World ARC;
  • The S&S Swan 48 has been praised for its elegant lines, its reputation, and its resale value. It is widely considered to be one of the most iconic bluewater sailing designs of all time;
  • The S&S Swan 48 has also been subject to some radical refits and modifications by some owners, who have updated its interior, rigging, keel, or hull to suit their preferences or needs. One example is 'Lucky Bird' , a 1972 Swan 48 that has been given a spectacular new look by Younique Yachts in the Netherlands.

What other versions of the S&S Swan 48 were built?

There were two versions of the S&S Swan 48: the original version with a skeg-hung rudder and a yawl option, and a later version with a spade rudder and a sloop rig.

What is the accommodation like in the S&S Swan 48?

The S&S Swan 48 has a traditional layout with a V-berth cabin forward, followed by a head and a hanging locker to port and another head to starboard. The main saloon has two settees that can be used as berths, a drop-leaf table, and a pilot berth to starboard. The galley is aft to port, opposite a forward-facing navigation station. The aft cabin has two single berths and a small sink.

What, if any, alternative accommodation layout versions are available for the S&S Swan 48?

Some S&S Swan 48s were built with a different aft cabin layout, featuring a double berth to port and a single berth to starboard.

What is the S&S Swan 48 like to sail?

The S&S Swan 48 is widely considered to be one of the most iconic bluewater sailing designs of all time. It is well-balanced, stable, and seaworthy, capable of handling various weather conditions and long passages. It is also fast and responsive, with good upwind performance and reaching speed.

What is the average cost of a secondhand S&S Swan 48?

The price of a secondhand S&S Swan 48 depends on many factors, such as the year of construction, the condition of the boat, the equipment installed, and the location of the boat. Based on some online listings, the average cost of a secondhand S&S Swan 48 ranges from $150,000 to $300,000 USD.

Is this boatbuilder still in business?

Yes, Nautor (Swan Sailboats) is still in business and continues to produce high-quality sailing yachts in Finland. The company was founded in 1966 by Pekka Koskenkylä and has since built over 2,000 boats under the Swan brand. The current models range from 36 to 115 feet (11 to 35 meters) in length

What other sailboats have been created by this designer?

Sparkman & Stephens is one of the most renowned naval architecture firms in the world, founded in 1929 by Olin Stephens and Drake Sparkman. The firm has designed over 2,700 boats for racing, cruising, military, and commercial purposes. Some of their most famous sailboats include Dorade, Stormy Weather, 'Finisterre', 'Bolero', 'Columbia', 'Intrepid', 'Courageous', 'Freedom', 'Nyala' and many more.

The above answers were drafted by sailboat-cruising.com using GPT-4 (OpenAI’s large-scale language-generation model) as a research assistant to develop source material; to the best of our knowledge,  we believe them to be accurate.

Nautor Swan 48, MIDNIGHT SWAN

Nautor Swan, Nautor Swan 48 Built 2021 / £1,200,000, UK VAT paid

Nautor Swan 48, MIDNIGHT SWAN 1 Main

Broker’s Comments

The Nautor Swan 48 is an iconic class that embodies all the qualities for which Nautor is renowned: intelligent design, superb build quality, exhilarating and rewarding sailing performance, comfortable fast cruising, and the potential to participate in regattas. This class has proven to be immensely popular, with over 60 hulls currently navigating the waters. MIDNIGHT SWAN, designated 48/227, was delivered to its current owner in 2021. It boasts a comprehensive specification for cruising and an impressive sail wardrobe featuring 3Di Ocean sails from North. Its owners are experienced sailors who prioritize performance and have previously owned several race boats. It was imperative for them that MIDNIGHT SWAN be fully equipped for two-handed sailing while also being suitable for regattas, a requirement it has met admirably. The yacht is in virtually new condition, with some mattresses and bedding still in protective coverings. And, of course, a Swan is a Swan.

Builder’s/Manufacturer’s Comments

For Nautor’s Swan, 48 is a magic number. One of the most iconic Swans ever was born in 1971 under this number: the mythical Swan 48. Designed by the best yacht designer of that time, indeed one of the best of all times, Sparkman & Stephens of New York, this iconic yacht won some of the most prestigious offshore races, like the Bermuda Race and Transatlantic Race and achieving selection for the Admiral’s Cup – the “Formula One” race series of that time.

However, racing was not the main purpose of the boat: like any Swan, she was born to be a perfect family cruiser, capable of sailing around the world in total safety and comfort. Quoting from the original brochure: “With many international races behind her – the Swan 48 is keeping up an irresistible challenge as top-class ocean racer. With the speed of a bird of prey, she combines the luxury and grace which make her the swift, smooth-going Swan of tomorrow. The Swan 48 is equipped to the highest professional standards and the woodwork has the class given it by the Nautor specialists, men who have learnt their crafts around the Gulf of Bothnia, where woodwork and shipbuilding skills are traditional. The unique design and professional skills behind the Swan 48 make her the complete ocean cruising racer.” To prove this, 46 units were sold during five years of production.

Following the same principles, in 1995 German Frers designed a new Swan 48 with the same level of grace and performance as the original one: another shining success, with 57 yachts built, now becoming beloved and highly regarded yachts on the brokerage market.

Today, almost forty years after the original one, it is time for another mythical Swan 48.

Designer’s Comments

German Frers, Architect: Like every design coming off our drawing board, the new Swan 48 has been designed with heart and passion, but rather than acting only on the flash of a moment of inspiration, this new Nautor model is the result of a rational brief, based on a market analysis and the experience of the builder, agents and designers, coordinated by the Nautor Project Line Leader. One can safely say the Swan 48 is a new model created by the work of a team of experts, and she offers the best equipment and material specifications and solutions available in the market. The equipment and tanks are low in the bottom of the hull and close to the longitudinal centre of buoyancy. The angle of positive stability is in the order of 120 degrees.

The displacement reflects the quality of the construction and the equipment dedicated to providing best comfort on-board. A yacht that will be safe, a pleasure to sail, will have an easy motion at sea due to the form stability and moderate ballast of the three keel options available, standard, shallow and racing. Following the latest larger models, the new design shows no distortion in the stern sections, the deck beam has been carried all the way back to the transom in combination with a twin rudder arrangement. Positive control shallow rudder draft and extra sailing length are some of the advantages of this design. A well-illuminated, massive interior volume where every one of the three cabins and two toilets that include separate showers has been carefully developed in detail by the interior designer.

On deck, there are separate areas for relaxing and sail handling. All halyards and sails are controlled from the cockpit and the tails stowed in dedicated bins. Protection from the elements is given by the spray hood mounted in combination with the bimini. The lazarette is large enough to accommodate and stow a fully inflated 2.80-metre tender. For sailors interested in racing at the Corinthian level there is a performance package offer available from Nautor, including a racing keel, a square top mainsail, carbon fibre mast and rigging, long bowsprit, upgraded deck gear together with recommendations to remove some of the cruising-oriented equipment like the gen set.

Misa Poggi, Interior Designer: Working on the interior of a Swan yacht means creating a special atmosphere for on-board comfort and contentment and a reciprocal enrichment beyond the practicalities of place, function and space, always involving Finnish passion for excellence.

The process for producing a sense of intimacy combined with the necessary seamanlike features is a multi-faceted one that enriches itself thanks to the collaboration of the great expertise of the Nautor’s Swan team, our technicians and, of course, evaluating the dreams of Swan enthusiasts.

The atmosphere on-board and its energy are determined by the relationship between spacial elements and materials.

Nautor’s Swan materials are chosen carefully and tested by the whole team to guarantee their best performance in all the challenging areas of the sailing context.

Owner’s Comments

Although we have owned many yachts in the past, MIDNIGHT SWAN was our first Nautor Swan. We purchased her while she was in build, and we were able to upgrade the specification significantly, including the sail wardrobe, a folding saloon table, central heating (we wanted to use her in the UK, after all!), additional refrigeration, and many more detailed updates.

MIDNIGHT SWAN is UK VAT paid as we purchased her for UK two-handed sailing, and she has performed extremely well. Her modest size makes her welcome in UK ports, and she sails quickly and is very well balanced. She is a very stable platform, and we have never found the need to bring additional crew on-board. Her twin rudders have proved to be a very big plus.

The build quality of the Swan 48 is everything that you would imagine; MIDNIGHT SWAN looks good behind the scenes as well. Her lightwood interior makes her light, bright, and airy below.

We have much enjoyed our ownership of MIDNIGHT SWAN, and we are only putting her on the market as we have decided to do more sailing in the Mediterranean, and we already have a yacht there. This means that MIDNIGHT SWAN will not have the use that she deserves in our hands, so we have reluctantly decided to put her on the market. She is a fantastic yacht, and we are sure that her next owners will have as much good sailing and fun aboard her as we have.

Swan 48 – Beautiful, Brilliant and Born in Finland: Yacht Style Review

The new Swan 48 by renowned designer Germán Frers is brilliant, as Yacht Style contributor Guy Nowell discovered after flying to Finland to see for himself.

“Today is looking good,” says Vanni Galgani, Product Line Leader at Nautor’s Swan. “This could be the Finnish summer. I’ll tell you if it is, then you can take your jacket off. It’ll last about half an hour.”

Product Line Leader Vanni Galgani with the legendary designer German Frers at the helm of the Swan 48

Product Line Leader Vanni Galgani with the legendary designer German Frers at the helm of the Swan 48

There’s a sort of wry truth behind the flippant comments. We
are just about to step aboard the oh-so-new Swan 48 – hull number one, splashed just the day before I tested it – and the weather is just perfect for sailing, with blue skies, sunshine and 14 knots of breeze. But it’s not always like this.

The Nautor’s Swan Boat Technology Centre is in Jakobstad (Pietarsaari in Finnish) on the Gulf of Bothnia, just 330km south of the Arctic Circle.

In winter, the temperature drops below -10 ̊C, the sea freezes over and the countryside turns into a very chilly wonderland. Like Swiss watchmakers holed up in the mountains, the Swan craftsmen are indoors, building some of the very best production sailing yachts in the world.

The Swan 48 had already sold at least 25 units during its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival

The Swan 48 had already sold at least 25 units during its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival

When the spring comes, it’s the birthing season. When the sea ice melts, the boats are launched. The sailing season here is brutally short – just six weeks or so – and all the boats that have been built over the winter have to be launched, commissioned and handed over to their new owners.

“It’s always a bit mad,” Galgani says. “Every year we plan for it, but still it’s a bit mad.”

SWAN 48, ROUND THREE

The Swan 48 is the newest addition to the Nautor’s Swan family. Except for the ClubSwan 36, which is a flat-out racing boat, the 48 is the smallest Swan to go into production for some time.

Giovanni Pomati, a recent addition to the Nautor’s Swan family himself, having been appointed CEO in September 2018, was delighted to report that 16 boats were sold before the first one was launched – and that one more was signed while we were out on the water! That’s cheerful news for Nautor’s Swan, which is reporting a full order book all the way through the size range.

Light on her feet, easy to manage, and with all the feature comforts you’d expect from the Frers drawing board, the Swan 48 is a compilation of good design

Light on her feet, easy to manage, and with all the feature comforts you’d expect from the Frers drawing board, the Swan 48 is a compilation of good design

The new Swan is a Mk III version, the original 48 having been designed by Sparkman & Stephens in 1971 and the next one in 1995 by Germán Frers, who has also designed the 2019 version.

“You design to a brief,” says Frers, now 78. “Yes, it would be nice to start with just a line and a handful of imagination, but it is necessary to be more rational than that.”

He acknowledges that today’s materials allow a designer ever-greater freedom. “We can now build a great deal lighter for the same strength than ever before. Partly it is materials, partly it is engineering know-how. There is as much interior volume in this new 48 as there would have been in a 65-footer from 25 years ago.”

He looks rather pleased with himself, as if he had turned the Tardis into reality. So, what is it that gives this new Swan its appeal, even sight unseen? Pomati believes that it’s simply a matter of hitting a ‘sweet spot’ in the market.

With a place for everything, and everything in its place, the saloon works equally well when cruising or racing

With a place for everything, and everything in its place, the saloon works equally well when cruising or racing

“A 48-footer is a boat that can be easily handled by two people when cruising. It offers three seriously roomy cabins and two heads. It is designed as a quick boat to appeal to the ‘racer’ component of the racer/cruiser market,” says Pomati, who had previously worked in the automotive sector, spending 29 years with Pirelli Group.

“It speaks immediately to existing Swan owners looking for a replacement for an older Swan 44, 46, 461 or 48. It is attractive
to younger customers wanting to move up the size and the quality spectrum, and is ‘right there’ for older Swan customers looking to downsize to a boat with less canvas, less load in the lines, and less hard work.”

COMPETITIVE RACER/CRUISER

At the time of testing, the boat was too new to have an IRC certificate, but Frers promises that it will be “very competitive”. Twin wheels and twin rudders means that optimum performance comes at 22-24 degrees of heel, when the ‘active’ rudder is vertical.

The Argentina-born designer also points out that “CFD analysis indicates that a smaller rudder, near vertical, and with the windward (trailing) rudder touching the water, produces significantly less drag than a single, bigger rudder at an angle. It’s just more efficient.”

The chart table disappears under the starboard sofa for extra seating room

The mast is positioned well aft on the deck, right over the keel, allowing for a big ‘J’ and an expansive foredeck. Forward of the mast, you can fly an a-sail off the end of the fixed bowsprit, or a Code 0, a jib or a staysail. The bowsprit neatly conceals a structural bracket that supports the anchor and retrieval system.

From the foot of the mast, all lines disappear into conduits leading aft to the winches, all immediately accessible from the helm. Rope tails vanish into immensely deep and capacious lockers – you’ll never have a line rolling underfoot on this boat.

All the line conduits, as well as the trench for the foldaway
 bimini, have lifting covers – no inaccessible tangles here. There’s
 no mainsheet traveller, defining this boat perhaps as a cruiser/racer rather than a racer/cruiser, but the sheeting point is lifted up on a pedestal that doubles as a leg of the cockpit table (when in use), which makes sheeting close to the centre line a good deal easier.

FINISH SUPREME

Drop down the elegant white-oak companionway into the saloon, and everything is in its proper place. There’s light – lots of light – coming in at three levels: hull windows, coachroof windows and deck hatches. There are no special surprises in the layout, no revolutionary rearrangements, but the boat looks just and absolutely right. And refreshingly, the showers are a proper size for burly sailors, too.

The beautiful forward cabin has an en-suite

The beautiful forward cabin has an en-suite

There’s no sense in questioning the finish on a Swan interior, so we won’t. We have been in the factory and seen the layup of myriad interior components, and fully appreciate that these boats are constructed with an almost obsessive attention to detail and quality.

Furthermore, the Swan 48 hull is built as a one piece from glass, vinyl ester, Corecell foam core and a gelcoat finish, and then the bottom frame structure is installed in one piece. This is not only the strength and stiffening component of the boat but also the conduit for all the ‘services’ in the boat – principally water and electrical.

And then the interior is built in. Open any locker and you will find that the back panel is fabric, attached with Velcro, and all those wires hidden behind elegant joinery are in fact very easily accessible. Good design exemplified.

FRESH ON THE WATER

Out on the water, it’s a crisp summer’s day in Finland (keep your jacket on) and the boat heels to the breeze, leaning comfortably on her elbow – I could swear that it was between 22 and 24 degrees. Frers himself is on board and after a couple of tacks he pronounces himself satisfied.

Yacht Style contributor Guy Nowell takes the helm

Yacht Style contributor Guy Nowell takes the helm

“Of course, we are not trying to plane with a boat like this, so it’s important that both ends stay in the water, to maximise the waterline length. The fore-and-aft balance feels right, so I am happy there.”

For sure, there was some fine-tuning to be done, but sailing on flat water in nine knots of breeze and with sheets just eased, we were making 8.6 knots of boat speed.

The boat moves easily – there is no sensation of ‘loading up’, and the twin rudder set-up means that
the steering was light and responsive. In short, this boat is gentle on the helm, and any lucky owner is going to be able to eat up the cruising miles without any stress on the driver or the crew. A well-mannered boat, beautifully turned out, ready to please, and ready for adventures!

It’s €730,000 (US$820,000) for the basic model and no Swan is ever going to be described as cheap, but there are plenty of other boats out there that fit that category. For a few extra Euros, you can have a carbon mast and a 70cm crane at the top, and a v-boom that magically swallows up the main as it comes down. Owner of hull one ticked those boxes and won’t be disappointed.

The new Swan 48 is more than fit to assume the mantle of her famous predecessors, and is destined to be a boat that punches well above her weight in the competitive stakes. I’m putting my name down for hull 18. Now, where did I put my cheque book?

Have you ever been on a Swan 48, this new edition from Nautor?  She is quite without equal in the market.  A large volume performance oriented cruiser, easily handled by two (or one for that matter), and exquisitely crafted as only Nautor can do.

This Swan 48 is an exceptional example - perfected in every way, and in superb condition.  She has had relatively light use and has been maintained to perfection.   This 48 was delivered to the USA in the fall of 2019 for the Annapolis Sailboat Show.  She was sold during the show, but her new owner took delivery after the season was over, so her first sailing season was 2020. Her suite of North sails were built and delivered in 2020.  In the four seasons since, she has been used for approximately 4 months and then stored inside a heated building.  She has had a charmed life - and it shows!

She is completely dialed in - the new boat "punch list" has been completed and there is nothing outstanding.

This is the first Swan 48 to hit the market in the USA - with interest level in this model high, KISMET is that rare opportunity for someone who wants a boat in superb condition (she does show like new) which can be delivered almost immediately and with the added benefit of skipping the typical new boat issues. What's more, with a significant discount over purchasing a new 48, KISMET's becomes even more attractive.

This fine Swan 48 is available now - and can give her new owners a wonderful late summer and fall sailing season, or if their sights are a little longer, she can depart for the Caribbean for a winter in the tropics with little fuss. Highly recommended, and ready for your inspection in Stonington, CT.

See further detail below.

Swan 48-S&S

Swan 48-S&S is a 47 ′ 10 ″ / 14.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Nautor (Swan sailboats) between 1971 and 1975.

Drawing of Swan 48-S&S

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
