Nashville Sailing Foundation

Youth sailing in nashville for more than 30 years., sail camp history.

In 1988, Mandy and William Hofmeister led a group of parents and juniors from the Harbor Island and Percy Priest Yacht Clubs in forming “Miss Mandy’s Sailing Camp”.  Initially, the parents taught the kids and camper fees were used to pay for meals prepared by the volunteers. As the earliest campers became teenagers, the proximity of moms, dads and 14 year olds was “too close for comfort”. So, the volunteer leaders secured US Sailing Association Small Boat Instructor Certification for these teens and they were advanced into counselor roles. These teenagers got the opportunity to “boss the younger campers around” by providing on the water training for the campers. The young campers loved being around the cool teenagers and the parents were able to be on the sidelines, offering safety and curriculum guidance. A win-win-win.

From this small beginning, largely supported financially by HIYC, has come Harbor Island’s Junior Program – comprised of a Sail Camp which now runs four weeks in June, several regattas aimed specifically at junior sailors and an ongoing contingent of juniors participating as crew and skipper in the many Club regattas.

Many of the campers have graduated into the counselor roles and the program has become as much a leadership development program for the counselors as a learning experience  for the campers. And, through the program a number of the counselors have college level competitors as well as coaches in other sailing Programs.

In 2003, Marc Fortune led an initiative to form the Nashville Sailing Foundation, a 501(c) 3 non profit to support Sail Camp with  tax deductible donations of boats and charitable contributions. The NSF ensured proper supervision, insurance and financial oversight of the assets of the camp.

In 2012, NSF became a formal affiliate of HIYC and is the day to day operator of the Camp. The Club continues its commitment to youth sailing by providing NSF with financial, facility and volunteer support.

WILLIAM PRYOR, Chief Judge: * Honorable Emily Coody Marks, Chief United States District Judge for the Middle District of Alabama, sitting by designation. USCA11 Case: 20-11571 Date Filed: 07/12/2021 Page: 2 of 32 This appeal involves the private-club exception to the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. A member of a yacht club asked to bring her service dog into the clubhouse and argued that she was entitled to do so under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The club responded that it was covered by an exception for “private clubs or establishments exempted from coverage under title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” 42 U.S.C. § 12187, and it refused the member’s request for an exception to its pet policy. The relationship between the member and the club deteriorated from there. The member filed an administrative complaint with a local civil rights authority, and the club suspended her and then expelled her from its membership. The member sued for discrimination and retaliation under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Florida Civil Rights Act. [Show full text]

  • Press Release Bayerischer Yacht-Club Wins St. Petersburg Press Release Bayerischer Yacht-Club wins St. Petersburg Qualifier in SAILING Champions League St. Petersburg, 7 July 2019 – Bayerischer Yacht-Club from Germany has won the third and final Qualifier of the SAILING Champions League 2019. They won by 4 points from the also German runner-up, Wassersport-Verein Hemelingen. Union Yacht Club Wolfgangsee from Austria became third. Of the 20 teams competing, the top six have qualified for a place at the Final in St. Moritz next month. They are: 1. Bayerischer Yacht-Club (Germany) 2. Wassersport-Verein Hemelingen (Germany) 3. Union Yacht Club Wolfgangsee (Austria) 4. PIRogovo (Russia) 5. Regattaclub Oberhofen (Switzerland) 6. St. Petersburg Yacht Club (Russia) The event was frustrated by no racing on day one, due to excessively strong winds. This was followed by two days of very light airs, which meant only five flights of racing could be completed before the final day. The wind for the last day was also light but consistent and enough for another three flights, making every result count more than usual. Skipper Julian Autenrieth of the winning team from Bayerischer Yacht-Club commented: “The location in St. Petersburg is great here in the middle of the city. But the conditions were really tricky, with the low winds and the current. You always had to be able to stay calm. What we did well throughout were the starts with the current. This meant that we were often starting off among the top three, which made the races easier for us.” On Friday there was a Gala Dinner under the theme of ‘Connecting through sport’, which took place alongside five international teams from the Nord Stream Race who had just completed the 1,000 mile offshore race along the length of the Baltic Sea. • 20150907 Press Release Clubs Porto Cervo En YACHT CLUB COSTA SMERALDA Press Release Preparations Underway for Second SAILING Champions League Hamburg/Porto Cervo, 7th September 2015 – For the second time in sailing history, the SAILING Champions League is taking place, with this year's event being hosted at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Porto Cervo in Sardinia from 18th to 20th September 2015. The organisers are expecting 32 clubs from over 12 nations to participate in the prestigious, transnational club competition, ready to challenge the defending champion, the Royal Danish Yacht Club from Copenhagen, and claim the trophy. Only one year after the inaugural event of the SAILING Champions League, this year’s event in Porto Cervo at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda brings a showdown of the best sailing clubs of the national sailing leagues. The club competition with a standard format featuring short races lasting not more than 15 minutes on one-design boats very close to the shoreline was an important development for the sport of sailing. The 2014 event was so successful that 13 European countries and the USA were so excited about the format that they created their own sailing leagues in 2015. Clubs from more than twelve nations will be flying to Italy in mid-September to challenge the defending champion from Copenhagen, the Royal Danish Yacht Club, in the fight for the sought-after trophy from Robbe & Berking. Technology partner SAP will be providing the live broadcasting from Friday to and Sunday. YCCS partners Audi and Rolex will be supporting the event while Quantum Sails is technical partner of the event. [Show full text]
