Test / Corneel 26 : two hulls for more pleasure!

The Corneel 26 is one of the fastest small cruising catamarans on the market

How to choose your used sailboat? This week on Corneel 26. Reconciling coastal camping and spikes at over 20 knots: this is the cocktail offered by this pocket catamaran.

Emmanuel Van Deth

  • Price: from 11,000 euros
  • Built from 1985 to 1990 in 60 copies

The very thin hulls set the tone: priority to speed! For comfort, we'll see after... This is in a few words the summary of this model with a strong character.

The story of the Corneel 26 is firstly that of two men, Gildas Cornic and Eric Bruneel (who later launched the Neel trimarans ). Corneel is the contraction of their names... After a first 18-foot catamaran , of which about a hundred were distributed, the two friends developed a lively and fun day boat catamaran in 1985, the Corneel 26, with Jean-François Fountaine and Michel Joubert. The following year he is awarded the title of Boat of the Year.

This catamaran , which can be dismantled, seduces by its simplicity: fittings at the foot of the mast, no boom or daggerboards. With its fixed wings that limit the draft to 70 cm, the Corneel 26 can come to beauty and even run aground during a tide .

catamaran corneel 18

Exceptional performance

Tuck in and go! The Corneel 26 glides along without restraint and does not take long, as long as the breeze exceeds 15 knots, to relieve her hull to windward, or even to take her off completely! The sandwich construction glued under vacuum and with biased fabrics, which offers rigidity and light weight - less than a ton on the scale - is of course not foreign to this spirited behaviour

All the regulars of the machine are unanimous: the 26 sails relatively safely on one leg. But be careful not to get overwhelmed by the machine: a few Corneels have capsized... Listening, we keep it in hand!

An even more justified advice for the Sport version. With its wing mast and 8 m2 more sail area, the 26 becomes downright sporty. The S (Sport) version offers one to two extra knots at all paces.

Suitable for summer weather

Ultra simple, the deck plan offers an efficient deck fitting with just two blockers fixed on the aluminium beams at the foot of the mast. The solid cockpit, despite the relative protection of the two hulls, is copiously rinsed by the sea spray in a good breeze. It's worth pointing out that sailing aboard the Corneel 26 is certainly always exhilarating, but it's more suited to summer weather.

The very low inertia of the boat forces the crew to keep a lot of canvas to be able to turn and pass easily through the chop. The outboard motor and its tilting chair suspended under the gondola - it is equipped with an anti-brown deflector - will take over the sails in calm conditions.

catamaran corneel 18

Rustic interior comfort

The accommodation is extremely simple: two single berths in each hull with a mini sailing area on the port side and a kitchenette on the starboard side. A few trunks and that's it.

We're still surprised by the height of the barrots. 5'10" isn't ridiculous. Enough to consider cruising in coastal raid mode. The large cockpit and the trampoline, at anchor , prove to be perfect areas for lazing around. You can put up a Queschua-type tent. The yard even had its own canvas shelter originally.

In 1988, aware that its model was missing a square and a double berth, Fountaine-Pajot launched the Love version with a central nacelle. Either a 1.90 by 1.35 m tatami convertible into a square, sheltered in a funny bubble, rather disappointing from an aesthetic point of view. These models, given their greater habitability and the intimacy offered by the three distinct living spaces, have nevertheless enjoyed some success and remain popular today.

catamaran corneel 18

The diagnosis of Bateaux.com

Thanks to a very simple construction and the absence of daggerboards, the hulls will cause you no worries. The same applies to aluminium beams, mast profiles that do not seem to be subject to electrolysis. On the other hand, some details need to be reviewed:

  • the sloping candlesticks of the first versions were certainly comfortable when rappelling, but they were hung up and then bent
  • the original bar linkage and the quality of finish are more than summary

A repair job within the reach of an amateur, which can be completed by replacing the fittings - and of course the sails.

catamaran corneel 18

The advantages

  • Robust structure
  • Drawing always pleasant
  • Excellent performance

Disadvantages

  • Candlesticks, rudder linkage and finishes to be reviewed
  • Can capsize in good breeze
  • Aesthetically failed Love version

But what is he missing?

Slightly wider berths and real back skirts.

The equivalent today?

Not much... manufacturers are now interested in much larger units. Even Aventura, a specialist in small catamarans, no longer produces its Aventura 20, 23.5 and 28. On the other hand, on the small trimarans' side, Astus, Tricat , Corsair and Quorning ( Dragonfly ) are very present!

Corneel. The name has a nice ring to it, but where does it come from? It’s a combination of Bruneel - yes, Eric Bruneel of Neel trimarans fame - and Cornic. In the early 1980s, the two men launched a sports cat, the Corneel 18. This first boat went well. They approached Fountaine Pajot to build the boat. They would finance the tooling themselves. Back then, the yard was building dinghies, racing monohulls and was just starting out in multihulls, with the Louisiane. It was an immediate success: a hundred 18s were sold. It came at a particularly good time for Eric, who had had the idea in the back of his mind for a long time: “I wanted to build a day-boat catamaran which was lively and fun. With Jean-François Fountaine and Michel Joubert, we had focused on a very rounded look with rocket-shaped coachroofs, and mast sections for the beams holding the hulls together”. Launched at the La Rochelle Boat Show in 1985, at a price of 160,000 French Francs, including tax (around €42,000 in today’s money), the Corneel 26 was rewarded the following year with the title “Boat of the Year”. “We were building one a week!” laughs Eric. This was a catamaran which charmed its crew right from the wo...

Corneel 26 is a 25 ′ 7 ″ / 7.8 m catamaran sailboat designed by Eric Bruneel/Gildas Cornic and built by Fountaine Pajot starting in 1985.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The CORNEEL 26 ‘LOVE’, features a centrally located cuddy (not connected to interior of hulls. The CORNEEL 26S version does without the cuddy? and has more sail area. (CORNEEL 26S shown here.)

EDITO-~1

Fountaine Pajot, half a century of history, expertise and ambition

Inspired by a passion for sailing and a love of the oceans, Fountaine Pajot has been combining vision, know-how and mutual support for half a century to design the very best luxury catamarans .

Fountaine Pajot history

Lean-françois-Fountaine-La-Rochelle-histoire-Fountaine-Pajot

The Fountaine Pajot Group emerged from the shared love of three men who loved the sea, Jean François Fountaine, Yves Pajot, Daniel Givon and Rémi Tristan, and set out to conquer the cruising industry in 1976.

Inspired by a passion for sailing…

A human saga

Starting with a passion for regattas and the desire to invent innovative lightweight sailing boats (505, 470 and 420 dinghies), the company from La Rochelle quickly made a name for itself in ocean racing through designing IOR prototypes, then the first cruising catamarans , which demonstrated their excellence and reliability by winning some of the best races of the day. The arrival of the first range of catamaran cruisers in 1983 heralded the development of new construction techniques and the ambition to transform the yachting industry for the better. After taking over the legendary Dufour shipyard in 2018, the group is now one of the world leaders in the yachting sector. Committed to taking part in the ecological transition in the yachting world , Fountaine Pajot Group is continuing to write cruising history, with the same passionate sailing team at the helm: Claire Fountaine, Chair, Nicolas Gardies, Managing Director, Romain Motteau and Mathieu Fountaine, Deputy Managing Directors.

Passion for excellence

« Little by little, our boats have combined performance with more space, more comfort and more innovation. We’ve become cruising boat specialists, always bearing in mind that you shouldn’t expect anything from the sea, but you should expect everything from the boat »

Claire Fountaine, President

Our know-how

Unique and historic expertise.

With almost half a century of know-how backed up by a capacity for forward thinking, Fountaine Pajot’s two design offices are constantly working to improve on performance and innovation. This insatiable desire to preserve the best of the present by combining it with cutting-edge research is helping to further optimise life on board Fountaine Pajot sailing catamarans and motor catamarans as well as their carbon footprint.

métier-nautisme-constructeur-de-bateaux-Fountaine-Pajot-La-Rochelle

The human side

The love of sailing is shared by all 800 employees. Nearly 40 different professions all work together to build exceptional yachts . Joiners, electricians, and architects, to name just some of the vocations, have been working together since 1976 to build our luxury boats using a judicious balance of industrial processes and artisanal excellence.

Our teams are spread across our four production centres in: Aigrefeuille, the historic headquarters and factory responsible for Fountaine Pajot’s core range of boats; La Rochelle, specialising in the “flagship” models; Gujan Maeestra for motor yachts; and Perigny, Dufour’s historic headquarters and factory. Thanks to this expertise, the Fountaine Pajot crew has launched more than 4,000 boats on every ocean in the world .

métier-nautisme-constructeur-de-bateaux-Fountaine-Pajot-La-Rochelle

The Fountaine Pajot group has made its mark on the sailing industry by inventing innovative, high-tech polyester application techniques: injection and infusion . This advanced technology gives our boats their robustness, making catamarans considerably lighter while maintaining consistent quality.

Injection moulding also enables us to meet the most stringent environmental requirements, in line with our corporate philosophy. These innovative, high-tech composite materials make up the bulk of the structure of our sailing catamarans and motor yachts , and is used for the hulls, flybridge, decks, bulkheads and more. The Fountaine Pajot teams also employ the best joiners to design and assemble the wooden parts that make their boats so unique.

voiliers-de-luxe-et-catamarans-Fountaine-pajot

Eco-friendly

Fountaine Pajot facilitates eco-friendly and autonomous sailing through an on-board renewable energy production and management system . The introduction of the Odyssea 24 plan in 2022 means the group will be able to realise its vision of zero-emission catamaran yachts by 2030.

The launch of the Smart Electric system in 2022 is the culmination of many years of research and commitment. Following on from this, the launch of the Samana 59 Smart Electric REXH2 in 2023 heralds a new era in the yachting industry, proving once again that the Group is still one step ahead …

Visio-constructeur-de-bateaux-Fountaine-Pajot-

An ambitious vision

From the benches of the 1976 Olympics to the half tonner world championships, the Fountaine Pajot team has always looked to the future with the ambition of becoming a pioneer in its field. Among the first to produce production catamaran sailboats in the world, inventor of a revolutionary injection process , and precursor of eco-cruising, the Fountaine Pajot Group has stopped at nothing to offer the very best in cruising.

Operating across 80 countries, its Fountaine Pajot Sailing Catamarans, Fountaine Pajot motor yachts and Dufour brands offer a wide choice of models as luxurious as they are seaworthy. Its ambition is to become the leading manufacturer of green energy cruise ships , for comfortable cruising that is respectful towards the world’s oceans.

Dinghies and prototypes and the emergence of the Shipyard

Creation of FOUNTAINE PAJOT by Jean-François Fountaine, Yves Pajot, Daniel Givon and Rémi Tristan. Pierre Fountaine joined the team and in 1978 the new site in Aigrefeuille was set up to respond to the company’s success and produce the 505, 420 and 470 dinghies.

The success continues with Fontaine Pajot’s IOR prototypes, “Half Tonners” which were set to become World Champions and win the Solitaire du Figaro solo multi-stage sailing race. In 1981, the Royale trimaran (18m) and the Charente Maritime catamaran (21m), designed for open racing, were released by the Fountaine Pajot shipyards. Jean-François Fountaine and his friends had many wins on board.

luxury-catamarans-Fountaine-Pajot-french-Shipyard

New range released and new collaborations

Fountaine Pajot launched the concept of cruising catamarans with the Lousiane 37. Eric Bruneel then designed the Corneel 18, and after the launch of the Maldive 32 and Figji 39, Jean Berret Racoupeau worked with the Shipyard to design the Marquise 53.

Joubert Nivelt designed the Venezia 32 and O.Flahault designed the roof cap, the Fountaine Pajot range’s signature feature. Fountaine Pajot is stepping up its international expansion with 4 new models, from 35 to 46 feet. The Taïti 75 was launched in 1996 and revolutionised the Day Charter market.

luxury-catamarans-Fountaine-Pajot-french-Shipyard

New manufacturing processes, infusion and injection moulding

A technological revolution, Fountaine Pajot adopts infusion moulding for the hull and nacelle construction on the new Lavezzi 40. Undeniable environmental progress.

The Highland 35 sets a new standard in the powerboat market. The Mahé 36 is the first boat to be entirely vacuum moulded: infusion for the hulls and RTM eco for the deck, the largest part produced this way to date.

luxury-catamarans-Fountaine-Pajot-french-Shipyard

Initial public offering

Recognition of the shipyard’s financial solidarity and growth potential. The company is floated on Alternext, enabling it to finance the industrialisation and updating of its product ranges.

luxury-catamarans-Fountaine-Pajot-french-Shipyard

Innovations and Eco-Cruising Concept

Creation of the “FLAGSHIP” class, with the GALATHÉA 65, designed by Berret Racoupeau, and the QUEENSLAND 55, designed by Daniel Andrieu.

The Eco Cruising Concept is born, with the aim of sailing responsibly, using as many renewable energy sources as possible, right from the design stage.

luxury-catamarans-Fountaine-Pajot-french-Shipyard

New management and an ambitious business plan

Fountaine Pajot Trawlers stand out from the rest of the power catamaran market with a new brand and the beginning of a new chapter.

Jean-François Fountaine hands over management of the shipyard to Nicolas Gardies, who is appointed Managing Director, and Romain Motteau, Deputy Managing Director. The next generation is assured. Jean-François Fountaine is elected Mayor of La Rochelle.

For its 40th anniversary, Fountaine Pajot was to celebrate significant growth with lots of new models and recent successes such as the Saba 50, the new MY37, the Lucia 40 and the Ipanema 59.

To support its growth, Fountaine Pajot embarks on rebranding, looking to create a strong identity for each of its brands from the end of 2026. New catamaran boats and new motor yachts then joined the range with great success such as the Saoana 47, MY 40, Alegria 67…

luxury-catamarans-Fountaine-Pajot-french-Shipyard

Consolidation of the Group and new horizons for motor yachts

The Fountaine Pajot group became a major player in the yachting industry, if it wasn’t already, by finalising its merger with the Dufour Yachts shipyard. The Fountaine Pajot Group is now a big name in yacht building, with a total of 4 production units in the La Rochelle basin, offering a complete range of sailing yachts, sailing catamarans and motor yachts.

A new dimension for the Fountaine Pajot motor yachts brand, which has taken on board the superior space of its motor yachts compared to monohulls of the same size, making it easier to read its range. And a new model: the MY4.S. In order to continue its growth, Fountaine Pajot moved its production unit near Gujan Maestra, aiming to increase its production capacity.

luxury-catamarans-Fountaine-Pajot-french-Shipyard

The course is set towards carbon neutrality with Odysséa 24 and the ODSeaLab platform

Fountaine Pajot moved ahead with its business plan to decarbonise cruising through a host of innovations. A new lease of life that has been taking employees, owners, dealers and suppliers with it. The Group launched ODSeaLab, a collaborative platform, and developed its own electric motors. Launch of the Aura 51 Smart Electric.

Fountaine Pajot unveiled the world’s first hydrogen-powered catamaran. The Aura 51 Smart Electric is joined by the Astréa 42 and the Elba 45 Smart Electric. In September 2023, Fountaine Pajot will unveil the largest luxury sailing catamaran ever built by the shipyard: an 80-foot catamaran.

About Formula 18 (F18)

The F18 class aims to provide fair boat for boat racing without handicaps on catamarans from various manufacturers and different designs within a “box” formula rule and for crews of various weights. Competition between boat manufacturers and sail makers keep costs very competitive and the competition is very close. Racing with upwind speeds of 11-13 knots and downwind speeds of 18-20 kts makes the racing very exciting. Allowing mixed and all female teams to compete on an equal basis fleets makes entering the class more accessible for every sailor. The Formula 18 class keeps offering popular, exciting, safe and fair racing, and also keeps on growing and evolving. The boat was designed for both distance “raid” racing and standard around the buoy multiple race events. There are major continental and world championships annually often with 100 to 160 catamarans entered.

  2. Corneel 26 : two hulls for more pleasure!

Corneel is the contraction of their names... After a first 18-foot catamaran, of which about a hundred were distributed, the two friends developed a lively and fun day boat catamaran in 1985, the Corneel 26, with Jean-François Fountaine and Michel Joubert. The following year he is awarded the title of Boat of the Year.

  3. Boat Review by Multihulls World of: Catamaran Corneel 26

Corneel. The name has a nice ring to it, but where does it come from? It's a combination of Bruneel - yes, Eric Bruneel of Neel trimarans fame - and Cornic. In the early 1980s, the two men launched a sports cat, the Corneel 18. This first boat went well. They approached Fountaine Pajot to build the boat. They would finance the tooling themselves.
