Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

I don't know much about Masons, but I agree that Nordhavn (the manufacturer's powerboat line) are outstanding in quality, reputation and seaworthiness. They're built like tanks to the highest standard.

Mason's are well built, well designed, high quality boats. Hold their value as well. Kinda pricey tho, but you get what you pay for I guess.

mason 44 yacht review

Mason's are excellent boats but are all a bit older now and as with all such boats, teak decks, tanks, engine, systems etc. need to have been well maintained or replaced by now so you will see quite a bit of variation in pricing and value depending on the boat. The well kept ones are beautiful examples of classic lines and good sailing performance.

mason 44 yacht review

Beautiful boats, I was looking at the 43/44. The 43 all had teak decks whereas the 44 has either teak or fiberglass plus a nicer cockpit coaming (ergonomics). The 44 will be about 50k higher than the 43

I have often admired the Mason 53. The "little" Nordhavn 40 that completed the much touted zero-fault circumnavigation was actually built in the United States by Pacific Seacraft.

mason 44 yacht review

I am a huge fan of their boats... huge fan. My favorite is the 54, of course. The 44 aft berth would not work for me because of the kids, but might be great for others. Nothing negative to say about them. THere are newer models too too, but I have only been on the late 80's vintage. - CD

Yes, I saw that one on Yachtworld. I liked it a lot. Not sure how you can go wrong with one. Go around the world boat.and will easily island hop. They are a little tight around the belt for a liveaboard. If you are just in the islands, you do not need a Mason. You will get a lot more room on a Catalina or other production cruiser. However, the quality of those boats is hard to beat. We have one in our marina right now and she actually performs pretty well too. I am a fan of their boats, both sail and power. - CD

mason 44 yacht review

Masons were built by Ta Shing in Taiwan. The yard also made other contact boats such as the Taba and Tashiba in the past. There in yard line is the Taswells. They have currently sold the soul to PAE and are making the entire Nordhavn line. They will, however, still produce a 50 or 58 Taswell if you are not in a hurry to get it as their production line is at least one year behind orders. By the way, the Norhavn 40, built by Pacific Sea Craft, went out of production. This company has been in business since the 1940's. The Masons were well built, hold their price, but are not particularly fast. I currently own my second Taswell and have not seen its equal at twice its price.

mason 44 yacht review

This summer I got the chance to step on board a 96' Mason 44. The owner kept it in perfect shape and the boat looked like a 2006 and not a 1996. Anyway, I loved the lines of the boat and overall quality of everything on board. Its not the biggest 44 foot sailboat down below but I think its one of the nicest that I have ever been on. It just felt like a solid, well built boat that could take you anywhere.

I never realized that is was a bit narrow down below, thanks for the heads up.

The lines of a Mason 44 are “classic and timeless” – her well documented sea kindly motion offers effortless blue water cruising. 180 Mason 43 and 44 were built – long keel with solid GRP hull construction makes a ‘bullet proof’ go anywhere sailing vessel. This example was imported into the UK in 2013 by the current owner with full UK VAT paid and CE certification in place. A  MAJOR  rebuild and refit included, new engine, generator, new electrical wiring, heating, hull paint, teak rub rails, refrigeration.  More recent upgrades include a bow thruster, Raymarine, Force 10 cooker, gas pipes.  In 2019 she had new standing rigging, new boom to suit a conventional slab reef main, new sails (main, yankee & staysail in Hydranet).  Also new batteries in 2023. ‘Lyra May’ has never had teak decks!  So…………she is quite special. Review of Mason 44

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

Unknown keel type

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.95 - 2.05 meter (6.40 - 6.70 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.5 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Mason 44 is about 240 kg/cm, alternatively 1348 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 240 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1348 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 41m 2 (441 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

A number of owners (some with kids/some without) have sailed the coast to , then jumped off to the , others have crossed to the or to the . George Day (Blue Sailing mag editor) circumnavigated with his wife and 2 . I have not heard of any horror stories involving the offset companionway. The only time its really ever come up is when Joe Minick's M43 Southern Cross got knocked down by a meltemi while at in the eastern . Think his companionway was open (no drop boards in place) and that allowed water into the . He had an article about this event in Practical Sailor.

I think that if you are sailing on any sailboat and conditions are challenging with waves that could break into the , you should have the drop boards securely in place. And you should have a spot to clip in your tether/harness for transitioning from down below to on .

Have sailed our M44 for the past 26 years, I've never had any issues with the offset companionway.

By the way, a Mason 43 won the Cruisers division in the 2016 Newport-Bermuda .
